AMHERST — Natalie Lewis was preparing to accept an offer from one of the graduate music programs she applied to when she received a letter that changed her plans entirely.
“I had applied to five schools including Juilliard and had heard back from everyone except them,” said Lewis, a senior in the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “It was a day until the deadline when they were supposed to send out acceptance letters, so I basically talked myself out of it. I know Juilliard can be very expensive and I figured even if I got in I probably couldn’t afford to go there.”
