One of the most unusual characters to come out of the State of Alabama would be William Ralph “Shorty” Price from Louisville, Barbour County, better known as “Fightin Shorty Price.” Price had been a roommate of George Corley Wallace for one semester at the University of Alabama before World War II and initially would help Wallace in campus and Barbour County politics but they had a falling out in George’s first campaign for governor in 1958 when Wallace ran against Phenix City Attorney John Patterson as the “fighting little judge”.
