Jane Mastroeni said she used to tell her son's best friend, Matthew Pulis, to drive responsibly while her son was in the car.
But in the early morning hours of April 25 last year, those warnings came to naught. Pulis was behind the wheel in a violent crash that ended the life of Mastroeni's 21-year-old son.
"I trusted you, and you betrayed that trust," the Jefferson Township woman told Pulis on Thursday, in a statement during his virtual sentencing in state Superior Court.
Pulis, 21, who lives in the Oak Ridge section of the township, pleaded guilty in January to charges of vehicular homicide and driving while under the influence after he smashed his car into a tree, killing Frank Mastroeni. On Thursday, a Morris County judge sentenced him to three years in state prison.
