TOKYO -- Japan's Mizuho Bank Ltd. announced on March 7 that its ATMs and online banking system temporarily stopped accepting money for fixed-term deposit accounts the same day.
The bank explained that the failure was caused by renewing the program for card loans -- a different cause from the large-scale system failure on Feb. 28.
The bank said an error was detected during renewal of the program before dawn of March 7, causing trouble after around 8 a.m. The system was restored by around 1:30 p.m. Though the bank received six inquiries from customers, there were no cases in which passbooks or cash cards were sucked into ATMs and never returned, according to the bank.
