The Jackson Police Department is bringing back its Blue Impact program — a community-oriented training and policing strategy that will focus on gun, gang and violent crimes.
Implemented several years ago, the program will span 60 days. As gang violence dipped over the past seven years, the need for the program waned.
However, gang violence has slowly started trending upwards in the past few months, said Police Chief Julian Wiser, leading to the program's resurgence.
“We’re essentially taking resources that normally have other jobs within the police department to focus primarily on the gang units and narcotics units,” Wiser said.
