The cities of Jackson and Hattiesburg are open for business Monday, despite all state offices being closed for Confederate Memorial Day.
Even though Monday is a state holiday, according to Gov. Tate Reeves, it is up to cities and counties to decide whether they wish to commemorate the day.
Cities such as Jackson and Hattiesburg refuse to recognize the day, and have for years despite the closure of all state offices Monday.
"We'd work more if we could," Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said Monday afternoon.
The decision to ignore the holiday comes after Reeves' signing of a proclamation declaring April as Confederate Heritage Month and the fourth Monday in April as Confederate Memorial Day.
