A nurse who allegedly cut off a patient's medication without authorization, resulting in a mental health crisis, has won a reprieve after the Iowa Supreme Court overturned his conviction based on how the prosecution presented its case.
Writing for the court, Justice Brent Appel said that "there is substantial evidence" that could support the conviction of Michael Buman, 63, who was found guilty by a Plymouth County jury in 2019 of wanton neglect of a resident of a heath care facility. But the high court followed an earlier appellate ruling to overturn his conviction over concerns about some of the evidence introduced by prosecutors during his trial.
