Whatcom County officials were trying to determine what caused a northbound BNSF Railway train carrying crude oil to derail Tuesday morning in the Custer area, sparking a huge fire that prompted an evacuation for nearby residents in the vicinity, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. in the Custer area near the 7500 block of Portal Way, and officials closed Grandview Road at Portal Way and Main Street. Motorists were urged to avoid the area as crews worked to clean up the site and upright the train cars. The town of Custer is located just north of Bellingham near the Washington state and Canada border.
