MADISON, Wis. – The City of Madison is celebrating Historic Preservation Month and focusing on a major restoration project on the Gates of Heaven.
Built in 1863, Gates of Heaven is the fourth oldest surviving synagogue building in the nation. The building was moved to James Madison Park in 1971.
The city imported mortar from France to do the work, which is super delicate from a preservation perspective.
Hannah Mohelnitzky, with the City of Madison Engineering Division, says they often get the comment that only build new, but they also do work in preservation, and projects like this are so important.
