PUC Distribution announced earlier this month its plans to build a first-in-Canada smart grid in Sault Ste. Marie would go forward, after close to three years of planning and amending applications to the Ontario Energy Board.
The smart grid project is expected to have multiple benefits for PUC customers.
Rob Brewer, PUC president and CEO, told Sault This Week customers would see their reliability go up somewhere between 25 and 30 per cent, at minimum.
Many people are working and completing school from home and relying on virtual communications because of the pandemic; reliability of their power supply is critical, he pointed out.
