Import of Washington apples on hold pending genetic modifications-free certification

Synopsis
The new regulation of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (Fssai) requires imported consignments of two dozen major food crops to be accompanied with a "non-GM-cum-GM-free certificate" from March 1. Through this, exporters need to declare that the supplies do not contain genetically modified organisms, are of non-GM origin and are also not genetically modified.

Import of Washington apples has come to a grinding halt from March 1, as the US authorities have yet to put in place a process to certify the shipments to be free of genetic modification to comply with a new rule in India.
