“Fifty eight steps.” That was the distance between United States senators and a vicious mob that invaded the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Dublin, one of the House managers in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. Swalwell and his fellow managers made a compelling case Wednesday that Trump incited the deadly riot and thus should be convicted and permanently barred from ever holding office again. They brought it home to the senators, serving as jurors after being witnesses and potential victims of the crowd whipped up by the 45th president.
