CAROLINA BEACH –– A 52-year-old man died at Carolina Beach Wednesday following an ocean rescue.
Darren Gentry, of Trenton, Illinois, was found unconscious at the strand of beach along Harper Avenue by first responders. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, according to a Town of Carolina Beach news release.
Lifeguards had just come on duty when beachgoers alerted them of the man and a 9-year-old in distress in the water. The child was safely brought in and required no additional medical attention after being checked on by first responders.
The NC Medical Examiners Office is currently examining the official cause of death and will report back to the town police. Investigators found no suspicious circumstances, according to the town.
