If you’re tired at work you’ll benefit from taking “microbreaks.” North Carolina State University researchers say microbreaks are short, voluntary, and impromptu respites in the workday, and can include things like having a snack, chatting with a co-worker, stretching, or working on a crossword puzzle for a few minutes. The researchers found that on days that people were already fatigued when they arrived at work, they tended to take microbreaks more frequently. Taking microbreaks helped them maintain their energy levels, and therefore to meet work demands and engage with work better. Study co-author Sophia Cho says, “Our study shows that it is in a company’s best interest to give employees autonomy in terms of taking microbreaks when they are needed—it helps employees effectively manage their energy and engage in their work throughout the day.” (EurekAlert!)
