Tens of thousands of flexible white poles that dot and divide the pavement on Interstate 95 are making the slow march north into Palm Beach County, signaling the long-awaited arrival of express lanes.
Drivers headed north on I-95 from Broward County can now take a streamlined, nearly nine-mile path from Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach to Glades Road in Boca Raton, which is particularly useful for long-distance drivers or those who want to avoid traffic jams.
And in the coming days, weather permitting, crews will begin to carve out the express lanes on the southbound side at Glades Road. Officials with the Florida Department of Transportation say this work, which is six months ahead of schedule, should be completed by the summer.
