Education Minister Chris Hipkins has defended the ministry's handling of serious problems that forced Hutt Valley High School (HVHS) to close an entire block of classrooms.

The school said officials knew about defects in the 50-year-old building for several years and it should be knocked down and rebuilt anew.

HVHS board of trustees former chair Peter Stevens told RNZ the school had long wanted to replace the building and the ministry knew about problems with mould and leaks.
