Unusually warm weather in eastern Hungary has led to a record number of cranes staying in the area this autumn. Over 194,000 cranes have been roosting in the shallow marshes of Hortobagy National Park, with no desire to continue their migration to Africa. The warm temperatures and abundance of food available have caused the cranes to delay their journey. The number of cranes in the park has been increasing since the 1980s, with some flocks using southern Hungary as a wintering ground.
