NEW YORK (Reuters) â Some 332 local governments worldwide have backed a New York City-led campaign to address global goals tackling poverty, inequality, injustice and climate change and pledged to report their progress to the United Nations.
The governments signed on to a voluntary declaration drafted by New York City, up from some 22 cities when the movement launched in September 2019, the cityâs International Affairs Commissioner Penny Abeywardena told Reuters.
âItâs an exercise in transparency,â Abeywardena said. âHow do we accelerate impact by replicating ideas has always been the purpose of this.â
She said some had been driven to step up because their national governments had not, but also because they saw the global goals as a way to frame their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
