Visitors flock to Venice seven days a week, but locals are very particular about their time off. On Sunday, ordinary shops – the ones not aimed at tourists – tend to close and the city winds down as Venetians take a breather. In summer, they’ll roll up a beach towel and head across the lagoon to a beach on the Lido – Alberone is a favourite – or they’ll opt for a breath of country air on the vegetable-growing island of Sant’Erasmo, which also has a couple of sandy stretches.
