COLUMBUS, Ohio — The typical career arc for an Ohio State quarterback begins years in advance, anticipation building with each high school touchdown they throw as a future Buckeye.
Justin Fields was more of an overnight delivery. Fans did not dwell inside his pending arrival as they had with Troy Smith or Terrelle Pryor or even one-time Maryland commit Dwayne Haskins. This was a modern college football marriage. A potential championship team needed a quarterback, a potentially special quarterback needed a team, and a process that usually builds over years came together in less than a bowl season.
