Q: My son has license plates for which he no longer has a car. He wants to give the plates to me. I want to turn in my plates. How do we make this transaction? Does he need to write a letter for the transfer? Are there forms we need to fill out? Can this transaction be handled at a AAA office?

A: This is a quick and easy transaction to do. Your son would need to write you a plate gift letter: “I, XXX, gift to my mother, XXX, the following plate, XXX.” The letter should be signed and dated by your son. To complete this transaction, completely fill out a TR-1 form (Title & Registration Application, Transaction Type: Plate Change), along with his plate gift letter, your old plates, and a form of payment.
