The Detail learns that if enacted a post-Smokefree 2025 plan would essentially bar anyone born after 2004 from ever buying tobacco. Ever.
There were two key moments that pushed Lloyd and Hinga Whiu into a relentless commitment to a smoke-free Aotearoa.
The first occurred at a hui over two decades ago. An argument broke out between the Whiu’s and other whanau who wanted to smoke inside the building - even though the Whiu’s two eldest children suffered from asthma.
The second was a realisation that premature, smoking-related deaths were not only stealing the lives of close whanau, but dying along with them was priceless knowledge of whakapapa, or family history.
