A judge in Sussex County on Monday found a Hopatcong mother not guilty by reason of insanity in an attack on her children last summer that left one of the boys
seriously injured.
Rather than serve prison time for attempted murder, Karina Cedeno-Flores, 33, will be under the care of the state's Department of Health, which will determine if she requires inpatient hospitalization for mental health treatment, according to a written decision by state Superior Court Judge Louis Sceusi.
She'll also be required to return for periodic hearings before a judge to assess her condition. The state's child-welfare division will determine what level of contact she'll have going forward with the children, who have been staying with their grandfather since the July 28 incident.
