The College of the Holy Cross opened its nearly $33-million recreation and wellness center Monday, though the facility won't just be hosting intramural games — it's being used this spring as a coronavirus testing site.
The Worcester school named the Joanne Chouinard-Luth Recreation and Wellness Center after a major donor who, with her husband, John Luth, a 1974 graduate, gave $40 million to Holy Cross. The donation, the school's largest ever, included $15 million for the facility the school has nicknamed The Jo. Another $25 million went toward the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex, whose expansion opened in 2018.
The Jo includes 52,000 square feet, with fitness and wellness spaces, including sports courts, weight rooms, a golf simulator, rooms for yoga, cycling and fitness, and a one-tenth-mile raised jogging track that features views for miles from its hilltop location.
