NEW MILFORD — Joao Lucas, 39, of Danbury, died Sunday from an accidental drowning in Lake Lillinonah after falling due to uncertain circumstances at Lover’s Leap State Park, state officials said Wednesday.
The body was taken to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner, where an autopsy determined he died as a result of drowning, not traumatic injuries, and the manner of death was accidental.
State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Will Healey said Lucas is presumed to have fallen during a hike at about 3:45 p.m. DEEP was notified at 6:15 p.m., after the body was found. He was last seen hiking down from an overlook area within the park.
