Highway lane reopens at site of I-295 retaining wall collapse
Updated Apr 21, 2021;
The right lane that has been closed since the partial collapse of a retaining wall on I-295 last month reopened Wednesday morning as the excavation work and investigation into why it failed continues in Bellmawr, New Jersey transportation officials said.
As promised by Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, the DOT also hired a forensic engineer to investigate the cause of the retaining wall collapse. She made the commitment during a public meeting arranged by District 5 legislators on April 7.
The right lane was closed on March 25 as a safety precaution after the collapse and to allow construction vehicles to access the retaining wall. It was being constructed as part of the Direct Connection project that was under construction and not open to traffic.
