City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo says the heavy rain has resulted in high turbidity in raw water.
Turbidity is the reduction of clarity in water due to the presence of suspended or colloidal particles.
"Since the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant is unable to treat water with extremely high turbidity, the city has been compelled to temporarily shut-down the plant in order to avoid distributing water that is not of acceptable standards for drinking water.
