These tests require a physician's order. The 39th annual Wayne County Corn/Soybean Yield Tour will be held today. Corn and soybean yields are expected to be good, with above average rainfall during the growing season. In the history of the local tour, the lowest yields were in 1983 with 17.4 bushel soybeans and 34 bushel corn. The highest yield in corn was in 2014 with 184.8 bushel and 2018 in soybeans with 54.1. Last year was near record yields, but not enough National Ag Static Surveys were returned to get a county average. Eight teams will travel different routes, each checking at least 10 soybean and 10 corn fields for yield. These teams will leave from JT's in Wayne City at 7 AM and meet back at the Wayne City Community Building at noon. After lunch, a marketing representative has been invited to give a market update. The Fran Carter Memorial Scholarship was established with the Jerry Carter Family and the Frontier Community College Foundation in November of 2020. Since that time with the help of the Fairfield community, Carnaby Square and the Illinois Eastern Community College District, the first recipients of the scholarship have been awarded. Each recipient is a returning Frontier Community College student currently playing on one of the three athletic teams on campus. Each recipient will receive a one-time annual scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Fran was a beloved member of the Frontier Community College Foundation and the Fairfield community. Her creative personality and eye for design can be seen in the many community projects and organizations she was part of. She had a passion for her family, the college and helping people. The Fairfield Public School District 112 along with Jasper, New Hope, and Geff School Districts are conducting Child Find/Preschool Screenings for 3 to 5-year-old children not yet enrolled in public schools and who will not be kindergarten eligible for the 2022-2023 school year. These screenings check each child's progress in hearing, vision, speech, language, and coordination skills. This will give parents a better idea of how their child is progressing at this very young age before school begins. Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza has tested positive for COVID-19. Mendoza's office says she tested positive Sunday morning. It says she's vaccinated and boosted and thankful to be experiencing just mild symptoms. Mendoza has canceled a full schedule of events, including an important address about Illinois' finances she was scheduled to deliver to the City Club of Chicago on Tuesday. That event is being rescheduled for Sept. 14 in downtown Chicago. Mendoza encourages everyone to stay up to date on their COVID vaccinations and boosters to be best protected against developing serious or life-threatening symptoms. A recent study of two-million people in 38 countries shows there are certain leisure activities that lower the risk of dementia. The meta-analysis published in the medical journal Neurology looked at mental, physical and social activities. The study found that mental activities such as reading, writing, doing crafts, using a computer, playing games or musical instruments and listening to radio or watching TV were associated with a 23-percent lower incidence of dementia. Physical activities such as dancing, yoga, swimming, biking or playing sports reduced the risk by 17-percent. Social activities including visiting friends or family, attending religious services or volunteering helped reduce dementia risk by seven-percent. Neurology researchers say it's clear that staying
