As of this morning, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting a total of 3,318,982 cases of the coronavirus in the state along with 33,853 total deaths. Reports from the area indicated Wayne County had one new case in the past few days, while Clay County had five new cases and Richland County reported three new cases. As of this past Wednesday, just over 22 million vaccines had been administered in Illinois, with just over 4.5 million of those booster doses. The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 12,781 doses. The Wayne County Retired Teachers' Association will award one $500 scholarship for the 2022-2023 school year. The award is available to a Wayne County high school graduate who has declared a major in education and has accumulated at least 80 semester hours towards a degree at an accredited college or university. Applicants must also have at least a 2.8 college GPA on a 4.0 scale and have full intentions to teach upon graduation. Applications are due June 15th and can be sent to Michael Simpson at 304 Whiteside Lane in Fairfield. The Fairfield Retail Merchants will be hosting their first shopping tournament later this month. For every dollar spent at a Chamber Member on June 18th, teams will earn a point. Teams of four will cost $45, and teams who pre-register will receive a packet with t-shirts, coupons, and score sheets. Prizes will be given to the individual and team who spends the most. The Edwards County School District has announced registration times for Albion and West Salem grade schools and Edwards County High School. K-12 and West Salem online registration begins July 15th and in-person registration will take place August 1st from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 7 p.m. in the school office. Kindergarten students, or new students, will need to provide a copy of their official birth certificate if the school doesn't already have one. Proof of residency will also be required, as are names of telephone numbers of emergency contacts if parents can't be reached. Area river stages as of this morning: Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 7.1 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet. At Clay City the stage is 5.98 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. At Carmi the stage is 5.98 feet. Flood stage is 27 feet. The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 5.17 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel stands at 11.13 feet. Flood stage is 19 feet. Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 1.99 feet.
