USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service ranked just 28% of winter wheat planted in recent weeks for 2023 harvest as good to excellent as of Oct. 31. That's the lowest, first rating of a wheat crop for a season on record, according to Rich Nelson, chief strategist for Allendale Inc. The previous low mark for good to excellent wheat ratings to start a season was 40% in the fall of 2012 for the 2013 crop, Nelson noted. While 87% of the crop was planted nationwide (2 points ahead of the average pace), just 62% emerged as of Halloween (4 points behind the average pace) due in part to widespread dryness and drought issues. But recent rains of 1.2 inches and .6 inches, as of Nov. 1, provided a big lift to wheat fields on his farm and others around the state. More rain was in the forecast in Illinois to close the first week of the month. Overall, the condition of the winter wheat crop in Illinois (35% good to excellent, 46% fair and 19% poor to very poor) is off to a better start than national averages. But, it's a far cry from a year ago when 86% of the state's wheat crop was rated good to excellent as of Oct 30. That crop went on to a record yield. The winter outlook currently calls for an elevated chance of above-normal precipitation in the state due in large part to an expected continuation of La Nina. ### River Stages River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 6.02 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage.
