Hays native Mayo Schmidt was recently named president and CEO of Nutrien — but he hasn't forgotten his Kansas roots

Mayo Schmidt, a Hays native and Washburn University graduate, was recently named president and CEO of international agriculture company Nutrien, which employs some 22,000 people worldwide.
Hays native Mayo Schmidt had his first brush with agriculture as a young boy, working on his family's fourth-generation wheat and dairy farm just outside of town, in Catharine.
"It was everything from hauling hay to cultivating the fields in between the rows of corn, any kind of rebuilding equipment, just anything farm kids can do," Schmidt said. "We grew up outside of town and spent all of our summers, when we weren't in school, working on the farm."
