Hail was the most damaging weather phenomenon for Spain's countryside in 2020
Hailstorms were the weather phenomenon that caused the most damages to Spanish agriculture in 2020. The damages it caused forced Agroseguro to pay producers compensation amounting to 227.4 million euro.
Last year's hailstorms started earlier than in other years. The insurance company received the first claims during the month of January. There were hailstorms throughout the whole year. According to data from the insurance company, the hailstorms in June and July caused the worst damage and resulted in almost 100 million in compensation. In June, the intense storms registered in the Ebro valley and Levante left serious losses in stone fruit, cereal, citrus, and table grape productions, and in July, the strong hailstorms in Valencia, Ciudad Real, and Cuenca caused heavy damage to the wine grape.
