CANTON – Long-awaited work is underway at the former Lehman school.
The one-time junior high and high school at 1120 15th St. NW is expected to become senior housing by spring of 2022.
Lehman alumni sang the high school's alma mater before Tuesday's ceremonial groundbreaking, hosted by development partners of the future Oxford Place.
"The alumni association is 100% behind it," Milt Hondrakis, president of the association, said before wielding a shovel.
The former school building, which has been vacant since 2006, will be repurposed into 62 senior apartments. They will consist of efficiency, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.
The city of Canton, a.m. Rodriguez Associates Inc., and East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation are leading the project. It's bordered on the east by Oxford Avenue NW.
