Grimaldi’s, the name on Italian restaurants in central New York starting during World War II and a local presence from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s, is coming to an end.
The last remaining Grimaldi’s Ristorante, in Syracuse, is being sold by the third-generation owners and the name will be changed,
When Grimaldi’s opened at 1553 Central Ave., customer demand was so strong that Colonie police were called in to direct traffic, according to Times Union archives. The restaurant, now a location of the Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse chain, could hold 400 but still regularly turned people away on weekends.
