The Grand Avenue reconstruction project in Galesburg is scheduled tentatively for 2024. Wayne Carl, the city's Director of Public Works says that an environmental study has to be conducted first and some right-of-way land has to be purchased first. Carl told WGIL on Friday that this year, the Illinois Department of Transportation will be doing some patching work on Grand Avenue, to hopefully make the wait for reconstruction easier on drivers. "We have an agreement where we will fill the potholes, strip it, plow it, and salt it for the state. But if it's more major than that, it is their responsibility. So, this year the state will be coming in and doing a patching project on that same section of Main Street and also Grand Avenue. So, hopefully, it'll get a little bit better to get us to that 2024 date." Carl says that the Grand Avenue reconstruction project was originally intended to widen the highway but due to some changes at the state level regarding design policies as well as federal policies. Monmouth Boulevard will also see some major construction work this year. Carl says that curbing will be replaced on a portion of the road before it is resurfaced. "But it's going to be from Academy Street to Henderson. That's going to be the curbing and sidewalks have pretty much disappeared over the years on that section so it's going to be all new curbing and sidewalks. And then, a major resurfacing of that section of that section of roadway. That'll be this summer." Additionally, Carl says that West Street near where the new library is being built will be replaced this year, while the new building is being constructed. He says that there are two blocks adjacent to the library is brick and they will be replaced by concrete.
