You’ll need to be a well-rounded and experienced mountaineer to bag Mount Powell in the Gore Range. (Provided by Ben Conners)
The Gore Range has been called the “Alaska of Colorado”: rugged, steep and with painfully few trails getting deep into the mountains. That means aside from a few popular spots right around the edges, these mountains are wonderfully overlooked — a rarity so close to the populous Front Range.
Winter’s snowstorms and cold temperatures make the area even more desolate. So for hikers, skiers and backpackers looking for a little winter isolation, adventure or secret powder stashes, the Gores might be just the right place to look.
