SEMPRONIUS, NY. – Bear Swamp State Forest doesn’t have any resident black bears, but occasionally one does pass through, according to a state Department of Environmental Conservation forester.
Today, the state forest, located in southeast Cayuga County near Skaneateles Lake, is a year-round draw for those who hike, cross country ski, snowshoe, bike (mountain and fat tire bikes), hunt, trap, and horseback ride.
Accessible off Route 41A, which goes along the western side of Skaneateles Lake, the state forest features the highest point, elevation-wise in the county. A state reforestation area, the area is thick with tall conifers and hardwoods, and has a large wetland and creek that bisect the forest.
