A young Bobby Charlton was one of the busby babes involved in the 1958 munich air crash. He survived, although 23 lives were lost , although 23 lives were lost, including those of eight united team members. As up until his team members. Our wont it . Beautiful game. Our wont it . And you only have to look at the newspapers this morning to see the impact. This is the sunday express farewell bobby football mourns the loss of a world cup legend, but its all over the front pages today in lots of different ways. Lots of different ways. There he is, pictured on the front page of the mail on sunday. This is the sunday mirror. What a great shot. What a great shot. Brilliant front page if youre listening on the radio, its just one of Bobby Charlton when he was a bit younger, you know, he looks as though hes dancing, but, you know, hes just kicking a ball in a way that must be when that honestly, that must be when hes his early 20s. Hes in his early 20s. We will never forget him, nor will football and the observer there , hes pictured on the front. And i think what what you see now is that you dont just have to be into football or even into sport to understand there on the front page of the people forever, a hero. He was he was he was a great brit, wasnt he . Yeah, a hero to the whole world says the sun on sunday. And thats actually a quote from David Beckham of all people. Of course. Of course. Yeah. And there inside the sun, see National Icon and sun, you see National Icon and even on the front page of the times, i see one of the writers says with his passing a little piece of england has died. Yeah. Fair point. And thats sometimes our hero, says the daily star sunday. And theres only one of them left now. Our 1966 world cup heroes. Theres the sunday heroes. Theres the sunday telegraph. Telegraph. He was the sunday telegraph. He was the sunday telegraph. Its only in the top, the very top in black. So its not that obvious if you just sort of glancing at the screen. But again, they say, you know, special tributes inside to englands greatest player. And thats i mean, thats the thing. Thats the moniker he will forever have. Thats why hes such a loss. Thats why hes such a loss. Thats why hes such a loss. I think he was a hero, but he was also a gentleman. He was he was also a gentleman. He was he was of that era of footballers. And there are still thankfully some around who always behaved himself, always seemed to say the right thing. He could be a the right thing. He could be a bit dour. He the right thing. He could be a bit dour. He came from a but he did come from a footballing family. His uncle was the great Jackie Milburn. And four of his Jackie Milburn. And four of his other uncles and thats his mothers brothers were all professional footballers and of course, his brother jack played with him in the 1960s world cup team. Indeed. Indeed. Its interesting mail on sunday on their picture of him at it says the hero of 1966 that every englishman wished was his son. Oh which is quite an which is quite an interesting sort of take on it all, isnt it . But you know, i think probably at the time. Thats right. The time. Thats right. If you pass me the sun on sunday there because theres a lovely picture in it somewhere here and there where he he was because as we know, he was he was in that terrible munich air crash that killed eight of his team mates. He was team mates. He was only 18 then. But if you see there, hes pictured in hospital just shortly after that crash. He was one of the crash. He was one of the survivors and obviously but he he lived with survivor guilt it is said he never never got over it. And they say he never smiled it. And they say he never smiled again after that because he had this sort of sense of survivor guilt. But this sort of sense of survivor guilt. But incredibly went on to become a complete football legend. And. And where is it . Theres and. And where is it . Theres one of the papers is which i cant see it now. Where it describes him as you know, the nicest man in football , which nicest man in football, which again, i think is nice because a lot of these big celebs now, they do have a reputation for being. Being. Thats another another one. Oh thats the miners son who became englands greatest. But a lot of people have a reputation, dont they, of just, you know, they get a bit up themselves. Yeah. And he always , themselves. Yeah. And he always, always had that reputation of just being a nice man. Its, i mean , ive been its, i mean, ive been reading quite a bit about him and apparently not in the final, the World Cup Final, but in the semi final where apparently england beat portugal 2 0. I think he scored those two goals. But his dad , who was a miner, but his dad, who was a miner, was 800 foot down the pits at the time at the time, because hed tried to get days off to go and see his son do so well. Both his sons do so well, but he thought hed better not push that particular semi final one. So he he went he went into work and he was down the pit when his son scored those two winning goals and got england through to the a lovely story. The final. A lovely story. Amazing, isnt it . Amazing, isnt it . Just different time, actually. Anyway, if youve got any particular memories all of particular memories at all of him if he inspired you into him or if he inspired you into football, maybe let us know what your are. Your stories are. Vaiews gbnews. Uk com. Now to the world of politics. The Prime Minister is set to mark his first year in number 10 this coming wednesday. But of course, there are problems at home and abroad. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. According to reports, up to 25 mp5 according to reports, up to 25 mps could be set to hand in letters of no confidence to the 1922 committee after, of course , 1922 committee after, of course, the loss of those two by elections on thursday. Elections on thursday. On the other hand, the channel migrant crisis and the war in ukraine and the middle east have also added to the prime headaches. Prime ministers headaches. Isnt it incredible to but isnt it incredible to think that tory mps think think that some tory mps think now is the right time to call for yet another leader . Joining us now is political commentator peter spencer. Good morning, peter spencer. Good morning, peter. Surely now is i mean, i cant even think of who they are proposing whats going on when 25 apparently mps are set to put in letters of no confidence. In letters of no confidence. I mean, youre absolutely right. And if they were to choose yet another leader at this stage of the game, they wouldnt so much be voted out of office as laughed out of office because they would look so utterly, grotesquely shambolic that they just would reveal themselves as unfit for office. Thats said, even the most sanguine of pollsters are suggesting that the possibility of a 1997 style landslide, the one that swept tony blair into office, is or could be a runner. Now, the conservative party has had a collective collywobbles for some time now. The story is that that these so called 25 mps thinking about putting in letters of no confidence were actually this idea was around before even these by elections took place. Now that they have andits took place. Now that they have and its worth remembering also there could be another one because peter bone, the veteran tory mp, could well be on the way up, triggering yet another in yet another tory safe seat. In yet another tory safe seat. The possibility arises of yet more problems within the party and i was in conservative Central Office in 1997 on that seismic night. And believe you me, i witnessed them going through the nine circles of hell. Not a pretty sight, not a happy bunny, not a happy ship. Happy bunny, not a happy ship. No, no , its not at all. Mind no, no, its not at all. Mind you, this figure of 25, i mean, it doesnt actually mean anything, does it . Because what would they need . 15 of 352, whatever that is. 50 odd. Whatever that is. 50 odd. Absolutely. Yeah, sure, sure. Absolutely. Yeah, sure, sure. I mean, to some extent this is a bit of a flyer, but it is indicative of the state of the appalling state of morale within the conservative party and the two factions that were talking about here are those who say bofis about here are those who say Boris Johnson should never have gonein Boris Johnson should never have gone in the first place. And those who fear the party is drifting or being dragged to the right and fear that that this actually is bad for the country as well as their own electoral prospects. Aukus and indeed, there are masses of other fact patterns within the conservative party bubbling away. I mean, it does not come across as a cohesive force at all. In stark contrast, i have to say to Keir Starmers labour party now in his boringly efficient way, he has clearly out the audience stables on his side. Clearly out the audience stables on his side. So the clearly out the audience stables on his side. So the contrast on his side. So the contrast between his party conference, which was was neat and tight and tidy and disciplined ed and the conservative party conference, which was all over the place , which was all over the place, could hardly be more vivid. Could hardly be more vivid. Okay , peter, good to talk to okay, peter, good to talk to you this morning. Thank you very much indeed. It it does make you much indeed. It it does make you wonder what some of these tories are thinking. Mind you, if they just think maybe they think know someone at the top who is, in their view, more conservative, it would make them more electable. Well thats what we must hearing and again, must be hearing again and again, dont that the rishi sunak dont we, that the rishi sunak isnt conservative enough. Isnt conservative enough. But who are they trying to put fonnard in that case . I mean, there are no names. There are no more unless liz mean, there are no names. There are ntbacke unless liz mean, there are no names. There are n back again unless liz mean, there are no names. There are n back again. Unless liz truss back again. Um, Penny Mordaunt, i think quite fancy. Penny mordaunt is an interesting one, but, but to change leader now, i suppose they could calculate. All right, weve got a year, but i dont see that it would be a good look for them to be in any further chaos. Wouldnt, you wouldnt you wouldnt, you wouldnt have so. But let us know have thought so. But let us know what think. What you think. Vaiews gbnews. Com it 615. If vaiews gbnews. Com it is 615. If youve us, these are youve just joined us, these are our top stories morning. Our top stories this morning. Well, are pouring in well, tributes are pouring in as englands greatest footballer , sir Bobby Charlton, dies at the age of 86. Footballing the age of 86. The footballing community expressed their sadness at losing one of the most beloved players of all time is rishi sunak in crisis. According to some reports this morning, up to 25 mps are set to hand in letters of no confidence against the Prime Minister. Following that double by election defeat on thursday. By election defeat on thursday. And the United Nations say more aid is needed after 20 trucks containing medical suppues trucks containing medical supplies entered gaza through the rafah crossing from egypt. This comes after an israeli airstrike hits a refugee camp in gaza. And storm babet has left devastation in its wake, claiming at least four lives with travel disruption continuing and workers having to be lifted from rigs as. Well. Be lifted from rigs as. Well. 28 trucks have finally been able to cross the rafah border into gaza. But the United Nations says at least 100 are needed every day. Yeah, though its an operation fraught with danger and israeli airstrike targeting and israeli airstrike targeting a refugee camp market in central gaza has resulted in fatalities and injuries. Thats according to the interior ministry. Well israel has said it will intensify attacks on the north of the gaza strip. Now that most civilians, they say, have left. And thats according to the military. And israel has vowed to punish iran for its involvement in hamas kibbutz massacre and promised that if the iranian backed hezbollah joined in, bombs would fly. Well, the american president has called on the Prime Minister to legislate. Our Prime Minister that is, to legislate irans Islamic Revolutionary guard as terrorists in the wake of tehrans complicity in the hamas massacre in israel. Meanwhile , back home, 100,000 meanwhile, back home, 100,000 people took part in a pro palestine protest in london yesterday , with many more yesterday, with many more thousands attending marches in other cities across the uk. Other cities across the uk. Yeah, they were calling for an end to the conflict in the middle east and demanding the government stop supporting israels actions. Free palestine israels actions. Free palestine , free palestine. , free palestine. Free palestine and transport for london have launched an investigation in after a tube driver appeared to lead a pro palestinian chant. Yeah, its a bit complicated, a bit of common sense. There excuse me. Lets talk to israeli journalist amir oren, who joins us now. Good to see you. This morning, amir. How much pressure is israel now under and what are they doing . Because weve heard of this almost shock and awe tactics that they said they were going to deploy. And it hasnt happened yet, not in the way we were expecting. Were expecting. Uh, good morning. Let me just add to your report that israelis are also mourning Bobby Charlton , 2 or 3 generations of football fans have become fans of Manchester United and england since that fateful day at munich and have followed the career of sir bobby and are sure to miss him and already are mourning him now regarding the gaza question in israel has delayed for two weeks now. The ground incursion without which it will not be able to reach the strongholds , able to reach the strongholds, probably underground of hamas leaders. It has been softening from the air as it calls it, the corridors from the Israeli Border towards central gaza. That means that the northern part of the gaza strip has to be evacuated from civilians so that they will not be hurt by the bombings and by the armoured columns. Of course, they will be asked to go back to their homes or whatever is left of them once the campaign is over. But but the campaign is over. But but the families of the hostages in israel are putting enormous pressure on the government to go up pressure on the government to go up to now at least to suspend its ground plans and work first for the release of the hostages in some grand deal. So in that regard, the pressure both by the Biden Administration and by the families is working. And there families is working. And there are divisions within the netanyahu war cabinet. How worried are you that this conflict could trigger now wider instability in the whole region. Instability in the whole region. So there are people in important positions in israel, including in the military and the government, who are saying that the lesson of october, the seventh is that israel cannot just brace itself for an attack by whomever , and whenever they by whomever, and whenever they decide to do it, be it hezbollah in lebanon or the iranian government and that israel should therefore pre empt , of should therefore pre empt, of course, it will bring upon it counter blows the israeli rear will be hit by thousands of missiles. But according to their school of thought, it is better to strike first. They are not in the majority right now. And the the majority right now. And the Biden Administration, through the president , secretary blinken the president , secretary blinken and the special in the pentagon, secretary austin is having near daily conversations with his counterpart , the Israeli Defence counterpart, the Israeli Defence minister, in order to restrain israel and to find out exactly what are the battle plans and approve or disapprove of them. Israel has lost a lot of its sovereignty in the independence in this crisis because it is now subordinate to american decisions. This is unprecedented in israeli history. Okay, amir, or good to see you this morning. Thanks very much indeed. Well, were joined in the studio by Foreign Affairs analyst and the former ceo of the National Jewish assembly , the National Jewish assembly, james marlowe. And its very good to see you this morning. I mean, i ask you the same question because the rhetoric is becoming very fierce, isnt it . Talking about cutting off the head of the snake of terrorism by maybe attacking iran or at least hezbollah. How dangerous is this now to the whole region . Is this now to the whole region . You mean from israels point of view . Yeah so i would refer you back to october, the seventh. And it was a devastating attack. The massacres in fact, zarqa, which is the israeli organisation that looks after the burial and is responsible for picking up pieces of body. And the reason pieces of body. And the reason why the numbers have fluctuated even over the weekend as to exactly how many were killed is because it was still looking for the remains of those who were burnt. But they gave a press conference at the end of last week. Another one just to remind people exactly what took place. And thats theres so much and thats why theres so much shock and horror in the country. In israel, of course, children , in israel, of course, children, they hands tied behind they had their hands tied behind their they had their hands tied behind thei some of i know the i mean, some of i know the descriptions i heard took out their eyes. Their two eyes. The eyes of them in front of their parents. They chopped off fingers and the reports of babies being beheaded be beheaded. I understand that President Joe Biden and the American Administration have seen video and these seen the video and these pictures and have confirmed this as well. It was just something which you cannot even believe. Which you cannot even believe. So there is a huge amount of angen so there is a huge amount of anger. Those communities in the Southern Region along gaza were mostly from left wing people. They dont wanna get into politics so much in the israeli politics so much in the israeli politics because ive been covering it for 30 years and this the time for this is not the time for politics. But nevertheless they were peacenik. So a lot of them one of them was the board of one of them was on the board of an organisation called btselem, which anti israel in which is very anti israel in terms of its rhetoric, always has, always takes the side of those people from hamas in terms of the reason why theyre firing. Not now, she was also another person who was killed and i heard some reports over the weekend because i spent a lot of time monitoring the israeli news, and that is that those who live in the communities we welcomed in these people because they have this tens thousands cross tens of thousands that cross over gaza. We give over from gaza. We give them work. Try work with them. Work. We try and work with them. We cant do that anymore. We cant more in now to cant allow any more in now to widen this out to to the the wider scope. Of course, youve got now yemen, who is involved in this because the houthis who are backed by iran were firing missiles, were its believed to be into israel , but the american be into israel, but the American Warships picked them up and shot them down. That was last thursday. And this morning its really flaring up on the northern border. So for the last week and a half, hezbollah has been firing missiles into israel. The israel against their anti anti tank missiles against the defence system in the northern israel. There is now so northern israel. There is now so far three dozen communities in the north of israel that have been evacuated, including kiryat shmona, which has a population of 23,000. But israel cant fight on so many fronts. Well, thats what hezbollah say. Hezbollah said exactly those words on friday that israel cannot take on two fronts, and israel replied back to say, yes, it can. It did. It in 48. It did it can. It did. It in 48. It did it in 67. It did it in 73. And it in 67. It did it in 73. And it will do it again in 2023 because it has no choice but the problem with all of this and it comes down, it comes back to the argument, the reason there is so much anger about what is going on is not that people dont have huge sympathy with israel in terms what she faced , but the terms of what she faced, but the fact that it is seen as collective punishment in how the people gaza strip are now people on the gaza strip are now suffering. Controlled suffering. The hamas controlled Health Ministry say its around 4500 people who are dead inside of gaza. Correct i think its around those figures and theyre obviously going to rise. What obviously going to rise. What people dont take into account and of course, there are innocent civilians inside of gaza. Of course there are. And thats the reason why israel said make your way to the south. And, of course, hamas were blocking those roads for people to get down to the south. There is video which is picked up from children in asking their parents why arent we leaving now . And theyre being told, well, because hamas has blocked the roads, but not theyre telling the children. But it was just the children. But it was just the audio of some microphones were picking this up. But of course, cannot come out. So, course, it cannot come out. So, of course, there innocent of course, there are innocent civilians the time. Civilians at the same time. But i the reason i have to tell you the reason why 20 trucks finally went why the 20 trucks finally went into gaza yesterday was not just because israel was adamant because israel was so adamant that they would not cross over. It was also from the americans point of view, because the americans brought out when they came with biden and the came out with biden at and the secretary state blinken, secretary of state blinken, Anthony Blinken , they also Anthony Blinken, they also brought out their top hostages as excuse me, top hostage negotiation, negotiate items. And just like you would take over a bank in new york city, for example, and it went wrong. So theyre holding hostages, right . You want some food . You want some water, give us Something Back in return. We want, say, 20 hostages. Well give you two. And they negotiate. Thats exactly what took place on the rafah border. Now, there could some more going could be some more trucks going in today with negotiators. In today with more negotiators. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. And so its not just israel, but its the its the western world. And a lot of the arab states, as well. The gulf states very much you wont see them say this publicly, of course, saudi and and bahrain. But and the uae and bahrain. But they saying that privately they are saying that privately on telephone their on the telephone to their diplomats this is hamas has diplomats that this is hamas has to go. James weve got to leave it there, but good to talk to you. Thanks very much, indeed. Thanks very much, indeed. Well, the other big story, of course, at the moment is whether well looking storm well be looking at storm barbette in more detail a bit later on. Right now, you want to but right now, you want to know how the weather is going to be wherever are today. Be wherever you are today. Heres snell. Heres craig snell. Welcome your good morning. Welcome to your latest Weather Forecast. Latest gb news Weather Forecast. Im snell. Well, looking im craig snell. Well, looking ahead today, some drier ahead to today, some much drier and brighter right across and brighter day right across the but especially so the country, but especially so for. We do some for scotland. We do have some showers to contend with, especially across more western parts. Times just parts. They may at times just creep a little bit further east. But i think the further east you are greater of staying are greater chance of staying dry the day. Dry right throughout the day. Best sunshine will also best of the sunshine will also be towards eastern parts. Could still be quite blustery at times across the very far north of scotland. And its here were probably the most frequent probably see the most frequent showers for many showers and for many temperatures to temperatures very similar to what seen recent days. What weve seen of recent days. So highs reaching around 10 to 12 across scotland, potentially up degrees across up to about 15 degrees across the coast of england into the south coast of england into the south coast of england into the evening. Any showers across england, wales generally fading away. Could see some showers away. Could see some showers just then moving into parts of Northern Ireland. As we go through the course of the night. But across scotland especially turning quite chilly, could see a frost come down a touch of frost come down further south, actually some higher cloud just keeping temperatures around 8 to 9 temperatures up around 8 to 9 degrees. So we start monday off on a fairly dry note across the board. Still the risk of some showery outbreaks of rain for Northern Ireland and maybe the very far north scotland. But very far north of scotland. But the best of sunshine on monday will across mainland parts of will be across mainland parts of scotland because later on in the day, and some day, some thicker cloud and some outbreaks rain will arrive outbreaks of rain will arrive into the south coast of england. Temperatures for most of us, again, very similar, around average for the time of year. Average for the time of year. And well have much more for you in the next few minutes about storm babet and also sport with aidan magee. Youre watching breakfast on gb news. It is 631. Good morning to you. Lets remind you of the top stories this morning as well. Tributes are pouring in as englands greatest footballer, sir Bobby Charlton, dies at the age of 86. The footballing community expressed their sadness at losing what they say is one of the most beloved players of all time. Players of all time. Its rishi sunak in christ this well, according to reports, up to 25 mps are sort of standing by, ready to go to hand in letters of no confidence against the pm on wednesday because thats when they can legally do it. It follows that double by election defeat last thursday and the United Nations say more aid is needed after 20 trucks containing medical suppues trucks containing medical supplies entered gaza through the rafah crossing. This comes , of course, after this comes, of course, after an israeli airstrike apparently hits a refugee camp in gaza. And storm babet has left devastation in her wake, claiming at least four lives. Travel disruption continuing workers apparently having to be lifted from air rigs. Lifted from air rigs. Well, storm babet is passing , well, storm babet is passing, apparently, but leaving devastation in its wake. Devastation in its wake. Yeah, now we know that there was a second red danger to life. Weather alert in a week that expired aired actually in eastern parts of scotland. Amber eastern parts of scotland. Amber warnings, though, are still in place, but there is travel disruption and thats on disruption and thats going on after kings station was after Kings Cross Station was forced shut yesterday because forced to shut yesterday because of and there are doubts about and there are doubts about many this morning. Many lines this morning. Weather journalist nathan rao is here. Nathan, morning. Its been horrific. Its been horrific. Just sort of in the in the bottom half of england, never mind the rest of the country is the worst of it over the worst of it is over. I mean, this is possibly the worst one of the most significant rainstorm, certainly since 2020. Storm dennis and that was the last time we saw a red rain warning. Now very rare, thankfully, the rain warnings have passed for now and there are still numerous Environment Agency flood warnings , flood agency flood warnings, flood alerts and flood warnings in place from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency all over the country. So while all over the country. So while the worst of the rain has now passed for now, rivers are still very high. There is still going to be an ongoing risk of flooding certainly throughout today and possibly the next flooding certainly throughout today eof possibly the next flooding certainly throughout today eof days. Bly the next flooding certainly throughout today eof days. And. He next flooding certainly throughout today eof days. And then ext flooding certainly throughout today eof days. And then the couple of days. And then the rain is coming back. Unfortunately, there is more rain way this week. Oh, rain on the way this week. Oh, no. Were to get no. When were going to get a bit a respite today for the bit of a respite today for the rest of the day. And thatll be very scotland and in very welcome in scotland and in derby, weve seen derby, where weve seen these horrific but then horrific scenes. But then tomorrow morning, there is another system another low pressure system coming south. This coming in from the south. This is not going to as bad as is not going to be as bad as storm and then all storm babet. And then all through week and possibly through the week and possibly until the end of the month, we are an atlantic regime and are in an atlantic regime and there coming at us from there are lows coming at us from there are lows coming at us from the continuously. The west continuously. Right. Not as bad all right. Look, not as bad as not as bad. But as babette, not as bad. But weve ground saturation. Weve got ground saturation. Absolutely. Exactly. Yes, absolutely. Exactly. Yes, absolutely. Ive explained yeah. And as ive explained the day, the problem the other day, the problem with babette was it wasnt an babette was that it wasnt an unusual in terms of unusual storm in terms of it wasnt especially or wasnt especially deep or especially vicious, was especially vicious, but it was stalled the uk because we stalled over the uk because we had High Pressure to had a High Pressure system to the of the uk its the northeast of the uk and its sort bumps it and sort of bumps against it and that stops it from moving. But yes, it offloaded a lot of rain and were seeing this why and were seeing this is why these flood warnings and flood alerts going remain alerts are to going remain in place. Any rain now coming through or the through the next week or the next going to be next coming days is going to be problematic. Where the problematic. Certainly where the rivers are at breaking point. You this where the you know, this is where the alerts are going to alerts and warnings are going to stay certainly if stay in place. And certainly if youre travelling, the youre travelling, check the authorities are authorities because there are still closures in still some road closures in place. In scotland and place. The a90 in scotland and the are still the a90 to these are still closed. This morning. And where there is flooding across the country, bound to be country, there is bound to be disruption fonnard. Yeah. Disruption going fonnard. Yeah. And an of this, the and you get an idea of this, the ground saturation , the waters ground saturation, the waters got else to go. Got nowhere else to go. So its just sitting there. So its just sitting there. When heard about that when you heard about that aircraft just skidded at aircraft that just skidded at the the runway, it was astonishing. Yes. And this actually shows how dangerous the weather can be. And about warnings a be. And we talk about warnings a lot. I mean, i about lot. I mean, i talk about weather lot, and they weather warnings a lot, and they do met office issue a lot do the met office do issue a lot of warnings usually. No of warnings usually. Yes no warnings. Get a bit warnings. And people get a bit frustrated because theyre saying were always being frustrated because theyre saying vwere lways being frustrated because theyre saying vwere alwayseing warned, were always being warned. Mentioned the warned. But as i mentioned the other day, they dont issue red warnings very, very good warnings without very, very good reason. Was good reason. And there was good reason. And there was good rea and we well, i mean, look, and we well, i mean, look, its dangerous to live and weve seen lives lost. And safety yeah. And the safety authorities people, authorities are warning people, you the rain you know, even though the rain has now passed for the moment, stay away from flooded regions. Dont during, you dont dont drive during, you know, flooding dont dont drive during, you know, because flooding dont dont drive during, you know, because a flooding dont dont drive during, you know, because a smallng dont dont drive during, you know, because a small amount going on because a small amount of flood water can move a car out of control and just out of your control and just just i mean, the just be sensible. I mean, the severe flood warnings in place from the environment and from the Environment Agency and the scottish Environment Protection to protection agency, they are to take these these take action around these these regions. Is regions. And that is particularly the river particularly around the river dennent. But where you dennent in derby. But where you see checking out see its worth checking out their websites and having a look if and aboutjust their websites and having a look if and about just to if you are out and about just to check of this storm check in the wake of this storm that where youre going safe that where youre going is safe and convenient. Okay, thank my okay, nathan, thank you. My goodness, difficult for goodness, its so difficult for anyone clear up after anyone wanting to clear up after thinking gone thinking the storms gone terrible. Maybe no point in terrible. Maybe no point in clearing up quite yet. Clearing up quite yet. No. Look, lets turn our attention to sport. Should we . Aidan here. Weve got aidan magee is here. Weve got to off with thoughts to kick off with your thoughts on Bobby Charlton. On Bobby Charlton. Absolutely. I interviewed him back in 2012 at the Queen Elizabeth centre opposite the houses of parliament. There wasnt much of him. I was quite surprised that he was diminutive. Yeah, he was. Yeah, he was. He was and he was. We didnt really talk much about football. Of course. I lived in manchester at time and just chatted at the time and we just chatted about stuff really, but about local stuff really, but i was at how down to earth was amazed at how down to earth he was. He gave fantastic he was. He gave me a fantastic interview. And have look he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis ew. And have look he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis body nd have look he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis body of have look he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis body of work1ave look he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis body of work me look he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis body of work in termsyok he was. He gave me a fantastic inihis body of work in terms of at his body of work in terms of his life. I mean, he came from a Mining Community in the north east england in north east of england in ashington family ashington famous football family as earlier he as ann mentioned earlier on, he was the great jackie was related to the great Jackie Milburn, was a famous milburn, who was a famous Newcastle United player. His older in older brother jack, who died in july also had a stellar july 2020. He also had a stellar career, but the two of them moved winter leeds moved to off jack winter leeds of course, and achieved magnificent success later magnificent success and later with moved off to with england, bobby moved off to manchester, he manchester, where, of course he was of original was part of the original busby babes 1958. You have babes back in 1958. And you have to think he was 18 years old when eight of his team mates perished runway in perished on the runway in munich. United were munich. Manchester united were kind upon by kind of frowned upon by the engush kind of frowned upon by the english football at english Football Fraternity at the part in the time for taking part in european they werent european football. They werent even be there. They even meant to be there. They were like, what are they doing even meant to be there. They were li partiihat are they doing even meant to be there. They were li part init are they doing even meant to be there. They were li part init are these oing taking part in these these european and so european competitions . And so you have to remember mental you have to remember the mental fortitude have had to fortitude he would have had to endure get within ten years endure to get within ten years to european to win the european cup. Losing eight of his after losing eight of his team mates the age of 18, he team mates at the age of 18, he was injured as well. Was badly injured as well. Was badly injured. He an he was badly injured. He had to recover from that. He always said that duncan edwards, he thought i was he said if you thought i was a good player, wait till you see duncan edwards. Duncan edwards sadly and sadly died at that time and bobby emerged Bobby Charlton emerged from that. The support that. You think of the support he have got today at the he would have got today at the age he was at. He came through that. Think if you look that. And i think if you look back at the time, would have back at the time, he would have grown in an era when in the grown up in an era when in the mining communities and the collieries people actually went to didnt come back. To work and didnt come back. Yeah, to get on yeah, you just had to get on with and stiff upper with it. And show a stiff upper lip. He scored two goals in lip. And he scored two goals in the in the european cup final for united against benfica in 1968, before that, 1968, two years before that, there was world cup. And there was the world cup. And look well. Look at his numbers as well. I mean caps for england, 49 mean 106 caps for england, 49 goals. That record until goals. That record stood until 2016 rooney took it. 2016 when wayne rooney took it. His numbers well, know. His numbers as well, you know. Yeah you manchester yeah excuse me, you Manchester Uniteds appearances, 249 uniteds 758 appearances, 249 goals. Look at numbers, goals. You look at the numbers, you striker. Hes you think hes a striker. Hes not. A midfielder. Not. Hes a midfielder. Hes a midfielder. Hes a midfielder. He hes a midfielder. He wasnt he wasnt just he believed that it wasnt just about morning. He believed that it wasnt just abo hi, morning. He believed that it wasnt just abo hi, gordon. Morning. He believed that it wasnt just abo hi, gordon. He morning. He believed that it wasnt just abo hi, gordon. He says norning. He believed that it wasnt just abo hi, gordon. He says inning. He believed that it wasnt just abo hi, gordon. He says in 1966 i hi, gordon. He says in 1966 i was 13 years old and i was one in the Wembley Stadium watching england in the england beat west germany in the World Cup Final. 57 years later. And there cant many of us and there cant be many of us supporters still supporters left. But im still incredibly been incredibly proud to have been there witnessed the genius there and witnessed the genius of sir Bobby Charlton. Of one sir Bobby Charlton. Great to there for that to have been there for that final stay in your mind forever. That lets look at that and lets look at something live something more positive live just from which is the Rugby World Cup night. More world cup last night. More positive because positive actually, because although england didnt get through, them on a hell through, they put them on a hell of a fight. Oh, they absolutely did. I mean, it went they were leading until three minutes from time. I mean, i was predicting that yesterday theyd probably time. I mean, i was predicting thaieaten rday theyd probably time. I mean, i was predicting thaieaten alive heyd probably time. I mean, i was predicting thaieaten alive by d probably time. I mean, i was predicting thaieaten alive by by probably time. I mean, i was predicting thaieaten alive by by southyly get eaten alive by by south africa. We didnt really know where england were at because theyd had five prior games, two that theyd won them all, but they hadnt really played, played any kind high they hadnt really played, played opposition. kind high they hadnt really played, played opposition. Butd high they hadnt really played, played opposition. But theyhigh calibre opposition. But they really fight to south really took the fight to south africa night. Havent africa last night. I havent seen performance full back seen a performance at full back that saw from freddie steward that we saw from freddie steward in years. Hes in many a long years. Hes somebody age of 22 that somebody at the age of 22 that england could probably build their team in to their team around in years to come. Think borthwick, come. I think Steve Borthwick, the immense the coach, showed immense calibre considering only took calibre considering he only took the december. He a the job in december. He had a wretched many months wretched time for so many months leading to the tournament. Leading up to the tournament. They well france they performed well in france overall owen overall and of course owen farrell his problems leading overall and of course owen fartol his problems leading overall and of course owen farto the his problems leading overall and of course owen farto the tournamentms leading overall and of course owen farto the tournament witheading overall and of course owen farto the tournament with his ng up to the tournament with his tip tackle suspension, but he was excellent last night as well. And south africa well well. And south africa may well go win the tournament go on and win the tournament now. Mean, got theyve now. I mean, theyve got theyve got in the final. Got new zealand in the final. And last night and the performance last night it it was full of it was it was it was full of guts, determination in the kicking was stood them in kicking game was stood them in good i would like see good stead. I would like to see them maybe for a but this them maybe go for a try but this is world class sides at is what world class sides at south africa do. Theyre taking the right end and they the right to the end and they didnt eventually didnt give up. And eventually they line with they got over the line with three minutes to go. But 16, 15, thats an immense, immense performance for england, you have it really is have to say. It really is because everyone was predicting, predicting aidan. Thank lovely stuff, aidan. Thank you. See little bit you. Well see you a little bit later on. Yeah, and do with us yeah, and do stay with us because headline makers are because our headline makers are coming join us after this. At 643. Lets go through some of the headunes lets go through some of the headlines this morning with writer and journalist emma wolf and the editor of spikes, tom slater. Good morning to you. Slater. Good morning to you. Morning tom. Lets start with the sunday people. Should we and forever a hero . Yes. So the sunday people, as with most of the newspapers this morning, going with the celebrations of the life of Bobby Charlton, who, course, Bobby Charlton, who, of course, youve been about all youve been talking about all morning, so much across morning, theres so much across the think partly the inside pages. I think partly making tribute to his tremendous footballing achievements , footballing achievements, talking tragedies in talking about the tragedies in his , as had. But his own life, as you had. But theres also kind of sense theres also a kind of sense throughout being throughout this of in being a kind of representative of a kind of more decent sort of era, you know, many kind of tributes know, so many kind of tributes to as an individual as well to him as an individual as well as a sporting hero and as him as a sporting hero and that that theres kind of that sense that theres kind of something thats been something thats the kind thats been lost with the kind of that generation of passing of that generation and footballer and more than just a footballer to i mean, ive to me, because, i mean, ive never been into football, never been that into football, but my goodness, i know Bobby Charlton he matters. Charlton and he matters. No, completely. No, completely. Interesting as well. No, completely. Know, interesting as well. No, completely. Know, hearingsting as well. No, completely. Know, hearing aidens well. No, completely. Know, hearing aiden talking you know, hearing aiden talking before the break about, you know, being know, his records not being overtaken until wayne rooney comes on. But comes to the fore and so on. But at the same time, just because of that kind of lack of glory and winning at top level at and winning at the top level at the cup and at the the world cup and at the european championships and so on for very european championships and so on for of very european championships and so on for of emblazoned very european championships and so on for of emblazoned in very european championships and so on for of emblazoned in the ry kind of emblazoned in the National Consciousness in a way that even some of the recent players on paper have players who on paper might have overtaken in overtaken him in their respective dont respective positions still dont have status. Have that kind of status. Definitely, yeah. That when you and they say that when you watch old footage his watch some old footage of his goals some of his amazing goals and some of his amazing moves, doesnt and moves, it doesnt look old and antiquated it still stands antiquated and it still stands up todays sort of standards up to todays sort of standards of football. No he was blinking good what did. Good at what he did. Absolutely. And you see that from the kind of praise from all of the kind of praise for all of different kind of for all of the different kind of generations footballers that generations of footballers that you in the newspapers this you read in the newspapers this morning. Everyone recognising you read in the newspapers this mor|asg. Everyone recognising you read in the newspapers this mor|as a everyone recognising you read in the newspapers this mor|as a tremendous ognising you read in the newspapers this mor|as a tremendous talent,|g him as a tremendous talent, first as first and foremost, as a as a legend of the game, but also so many tributes to as an many tributes to him as an individual, seemingly never had a mean no one has a bad a does he mean no one has a bad word to say . Yeah i mean, i should dislike him because im a lifelong Liverpool Fan obviously manchester fan and obviously Manchester United. Mean, at united. But no, i mean, look at the of the star. Our the front page of the star. Our hero, tears for world cup legend sir Bobby Charlton, nicest sir Bobby Charlton, the nicest man football. Its man in football. And its lovely. Its that humane side of the through which we the man coming through which we havent be havent always seen. Lets be honest, professional honest, in professional footballers, they havent always covered themselves in glory. Over few decades. Over the past few decades. And theres something just amazing of amazing about the 66 team. Of course, there is , of course. Course, there is, of course. And weve got left now, so weve only got one left now, so geoff hes the only one geoff hurst, hes the only one left now. Yeah emma in the observer. Yeah this, i mean, we heard it this, this, i mean, we heard it from amir oren who we were talking to in tel aviv earlier on. Theidea talking to in tel aviv earlier on. The idea now that in fact israel has sort of ceded control role to the United States with what its doing in this. Yeah, i mean, israel are coming under increasing pressure to launch a pre emptive strike on hezbollah. The iran backed militia in lebanon. But theyre also coming under pressure from the us not to do so. And you know, from from international allies. And i think what this is allies. And i think what this is allies. And i think what this is all about is a real sense, its sense of contagion , of sense of contagion, of contagion, of conflict. Contagion, of conflict. Obviously, its a terribly complicated situation in with this looming Ground Invasion possibly, you know, unfolding over the next few days, will likely to unfold over the next few days is the sense and i think people are also now becoming aware just how becoming aware of just how febrile and dangerous the situation is on many fronts. You know, circles within circles, who is backing whom and who is striking on whom. And this is really, know , israel for now really, you know, israel for now theyre saying they want to focus on gaza and finish the job there though its going to be there as though its going to be that because, of course, that simple because, of course, finishing job there then finishing the job there then ignites all sorts of other issues a huge amount of issues and a huge amount of civilian life will be lost, whatever the military casualties. Yes, i, i just dont know quite how they even if they could clear every civilian from the north to the south, which they cant and then bomb it and then its a city. No , no. No, no. No, no. But its like, what do those people go back to . What they go back but what do they go back to . But also, this isnt just any city. This the most densely this is the most densely populated city. I think in the world. You cant fight in world. But you cant fight in cities. You cant fight. With hamas in and out of the hamas melting in and out of the civilian population, embedding hamas melting in and out of the civilian popinition, embedding hamas melting in and out of the civilian popin hospitals, edding hamas melting in and out of the civilian popin hospitals, in iing themselves in hospitals, in schools. Simply doesnt schools. It just simply doesnt work, a casualty free way work, not in a casualty free way. You dont just. No, you cant. You dontjust have soldiers. No , no. No, no. No, no. Meanwhile, in the sunday times, emma, the theyre claiming a hamas chief is in a British Council house. This is one of those stories which i it feels big, but also its kind of and you know what and what basically the story in the sunday times is a really interesting investigation. They found that this hamas, a former hes a fugitive who ran the groups terrorist operations in the west bank, Muhammad Qasim salah fled the fled israel and managed to make his way here in the 1990s. And he obtained a british citizenship. He then has got himself embedded quietly, living quietly here and lived in north london in barnet, in the most jewish local authority in the entire country. It has a fifth in barnet. Yeah, it has a fifth in barnet. Yeah, it has a fifth of all the jews, 56,000 jews in this country. Jews in this country. So it could be more jewish should look for him. Hes within a few miles of two synagogues and this is a man who, as late as 2019 was flying out to moscow, meeting with putins henchmen. So he oh, my goodness. I wouldnt i wouldnt. I mean, its clear that he hasnt been active in hamas in any illegal this any illegal sense in this country. It raises a lot of country. But it raises a lot of questions. He bought a very expensive he bought an expensive Council House with a whopping discount. Lives there with his with his four children. I think has no mortgage. And is living quietly in this country. My question would be, its clear from the report that he hasnt done anything wrong specifically, is this the specifically, but is this the kind person be kind of person we should be giving passports to . Is giving british passports to . Is this want when we talk this what we want when we talk about british citizenship, given that okay, hamas as that we know, okay, hamas as an entire organisation wasnt proscribed until 2021 when he came over in the 1990s, early 2000, was only military 2000, it was only the military wing that was proscribed. So so you could i think its very clear that the home office has dropped the ball here that they hadnt looked into his background because when you have innocent people , people who want innocent people, people who want to give to this country who cant british passports, who cant get british passports, who cant get british passports, who cant citizenship, cant get british citizenship, is the of man that we is this the kind of man that we want here . Mean, the worry if yeah. I mean, the worry is if we have missed this and the front, the front page lead front, its the front page lead of sunday times says hamas of the sunday times says hamas chief lives in british. And how do you are a jew do you feel if you are a jew living in barnet right now that is arresting that headline. Is so arresting that headline. And there have other and there have been other examples as of there being examples as well of there being this slackness. This tremendous slackness. I always salman always remember salman abedi, the Manchester Arena bomber, was allowed to essentially travel back libya back and forth from libya fighting in the libyan civil war with libyan islamists, where its very much understood thats where learned to make where he learned to make explosives. Thats where he learned his plied his trade in jihad and so on to then come back make this attack and back and make this attack and this kind this this this kind of cluelessness that to cluelessness that its hard to get a grip on. Why were these things not kind of picked up on how people allowed move how are people allowed to move back even represent back and forth, even represent the of hamas . And the interests of hamas . And so on, well into the 20s or late 90 . Worry about that being a thing in a way we just thing in a way that we just missed these things. Missed these things. Okay. Tom the sunday okay. Tom in the sunday telegraph , whats the us telling telegraph, whats the us telling us here in number 10 . Yes. So this us here in number 10 . Yes. So this is a us here in number 10 . Yes. So this is a discussion yes. So this is a discussion thats been rumbling on for some time, to put it lightly, between the us and the uk, putting a lot of pressure on the uk to formally proscribe the irgc, the Iranian Revolutionary guard corps , which very much seems corps, which very much seems kind founded as the sort of kind of founded as the sort of protectors of the iranian revolution , if you like, but revolution, if you like, but also seem to be involved in all kinds of things beyond its own borders. This is something which borders. This is something which has been pretty torturous has been a pretty torturous point the British Foreign point for the British Foreign office in particular, which seemingly out of a desire to not inflame diplomatic tensions with iran , therefore has held back iran, therefore has held back from prescribing this particular group as terrorists. Exactly. And with all the sanctions that come with that. But obviously , come with that. But obviously, given what has happened in israel, given the pogrom in israel, given the pogrom in israel, given the fact that we know that iran is has funded hamas and armed hamas for a very long time, although how much they knew about this specific atrocity is something which is constantly and constantly being debated and reported new pressure coming reported on new pressure coming from washington to for to James Cleverly for the Foreign Office to do something about this. Yeah, i dont i dont know what i think about that in the sense that wonder what sense that you do wonder what its secondary its about. Secondary implications what implications isnt it. What what actually would it would stir things even more. Things up even more. It would escalate the. It would escalate the. Yeah. I think the word is inflame. I theres this inflame. I mean theres this whole is tinderbox whole region is a tinderbox isnt and matters. Isnt it . And language matters. And im so frustrated all week. I feel that were getting caught up in whether the bbc used the term terrorist or not. Again, here. Matter . Does here. Does it matter . Does anyone they are anyone care whether they are proscribed not . Of course it proscribed or not . Of course it matters. Also what is matters. But also what is actually is there actually happening. Is there anything . Dont know. Theres anything . I dont know. Theres just rhetoric just so much rhetoric around this. That much positive this. And not that much positive action and i yeah, i sort of despair. Weve all got to be careful, havent we . I suppose. And thats what the sensitivities that were looking at everybody diplomatically, politically. Looking at everybody diplon okay. Ly, politically. Looking at everybody diplon okay. Ly, pthat ally. Looking at everybody diplonokay. Ly, pthat comes down mhm. Okay. And that comes down to yes. Protests, which of course are going to go on arent they. Were going to see them every weekend if not during the week and emma in the week as well. And emma in the telegraph, found report telegraph, you found the report that police are being criticised for allowing a jihad chant at the protest yesterday. Yeah. So this is the police. Theyve been also like israel coming under increasing pressure from many, many critics saying, hang on a minute, these huge protests which are happening now in london regularly at weekends and as say , and probably and as you say, and probably only to increase are going only going to increase are going to regular feature for to become a regular feature for not cracking down. I think the latest is that out of around an estimated 100,000 protesters yesterday , they seem to have yesterday, they seem to have made ten arrests. Right i think it comes down as well to how you its the interpretation of the word jihad. The met police have made the point there were people chanting jihad, jihad, jihad. The met police are making the point as if were meant to trust them when they cant even arrest shoplifters. Theyre making the point specialist point that they have specialist terrorist know, experts in terrorist, you know, experts in this area , that understand this area, that they understand the word jihad, the meaning of the word jihad, that it wasnt meant as we interpret in holy war, in interpret it in a holy war, in a terrorist sense, that they are they are assessing the video very carefully. This was a you very carefully. This was a you know, this was a huge protest yesterday organised by hizb ut tahrir, which is an Extremist Islamic Group thats who organised it. Yes. And you know, many people in Central London yesterday caught up in it felt that it was, you know, pretty, pretty hot, pretty febrile situation. Is this the kind of situation. Is this the kind of thing we want to have on our streets and. Well no. But again, it boils down to that same argument, though, as much as you may not like it, if you in heavy handed and you then go in heavy handed and arresting everyone who shouts jihad, its just interesting what police and dont what the police do and dont crack on. Well, yeah, crack down on. Well, yeah, but. But it cause would it but would it not cause would it just not inflame more protests more . No, youre right. Youre right. I dont come down either and down on either side. And i think, of course, the think, again, of course, the majority probably majority were probably protesting majority were probably pro drawg majority were probably prodrawg line because draw the line because palestinians somewhere, dont you . You . Do. You do. I mean, you do. You do. I mean, i always understood jihad was a the worst sort of holy war. And to have it chanted in an organised fashion on the streets of london, i mean, they didnt crack they didnt. Of london, i mean, they didnt cratstephen, they didnt. Of london, i mean, they didnt cratstephen, they y didnt. Of london, i mean, they didnt cratstephen, they didntit. Of london, i mean, they didnt cratstephen, they didnt crack stephen, they didnt crack down the who had down on the women who had paragliders pictures of paragliders pictures of paragliders of their paragliders on the back of their hoodies. They choosing hoodies. No so they are choosing to be to take a light touch on this and that may be the right strategy. It may, but its a choice i can understand people at home or listening or watching thinking, no, you need to tackle that. No, you need to tackle that. Its never that. Just never, its never that. Just never, never that you cause an incident that you may have been able to avoid. It how . Yeah, i think but it how . Yeah, i think many, many jewish people and many, many jewish people and many others are feeling extremely hurt shocked and extremely hurt and shocked and frightened now and seeing frightened right now and seeing these protests. And im not anti these protests. And im not anti the protesters at seeing the protesters at all, seeing these protesters weekend after weekend living this city. Weekend and living in this city. You know, we have to think of them. But its also you have to you have remember october the you have to remember october the 7th, i with these 7th, i think, with these protests , oysters, need to work. And i and ijust work. And i and i just i work. And i and ijust i dont know. But how many are know. But how many of them are just theres some of just saying theres some of these celebs seem to be saying all were concerned about is palestinian and, palestinian civilians. And, in fact, them and some of fact, a lot of them and some of the that used are the chants that are used are actually, in effect, calling for the destruction of israel. Oh, no. Exactly. Is the no. Exactly. And this is the problem. I think people problem. I dont think people understand nuances it. Understand the nuances of it. And there is no, not at all. And there is so many different to so many different elements to it. Some people who it. Therell be some people who might not who might just see the images on television and to might not who might just see the imageout, television and to might not who might just see the imageout, but, ision and to might not who might just see the imageout, but, youn and to might not who might just see the imageout, but, you know, to might not who might just see the imageout, but, you know, this to come out, but, you know, this has been feature of supposedly has been a feature of supposedly pro palestine demonstrations for many which and many years now, which is in and amongst people just trying to express their solidarity in whatever strong whatever is an incredibly strong anti semitic whatever is an incredibly strong anti semistrong theyre incredibly strong and theyre part element exactly. It part of it. Element exactly. It often involved actually often involved in actually organising youre organising these things. Youre heanng organising these things. Youre hearing anti semitic hearing explicitly anti semitic chants, arabic war cries chants, kind of arabic war cries which date back to points in which date back to points in which armies had kind of razed whole villages. Theres whole jewish villages. Theres all these kind of references which palestine, a concentration camp, know, thats a very, camp, you know, thats a very, very loaded term. Comparisons of very loaded term. Comparisons of israel to the. There was a lot of that yesterday. There was some really sickening placards that you saw pictures doing the rounds. I think if nothing else, its were up its shown us what were up against terms of we have against in terms of we have a very significant domestic problem with anti semitism, with a extreme obsession with israel, which something which is morphed into something deeply racist. Deeply ugly and indeed racist. And shown you know, and its shown that, you know, this thats not this is something thats not going be solved by police. Going to be solved by police. Making arrests is a deeper making a few arrests is a deeper kind social issue that we kind of social issue that we have to confront and take very seriously. Ill you seriously. Well, ill tell you what. Only got one look, weve only got one minute we on minute left. Can we end on something . I think its lighter about extremely rare about these extremely rare fossils into fossils being flown into space by galactic. By Virgin Galactic. Yes. Yes. So its a bit of a scandalin yes. Yes. It just came out from somewhere inside me. Historically it was part of my life. I knew of him as a player before 1966, but the munich air disaster brought some names to the fore like never before. In the fore like never before. In those times. They those monochrome times. They were monochrome times, really, werent they . They were black werent they . They were black and white shots sir bobby and white shots of sir Bobby Charlton thing. Charlton doing his thing. Its it is just a loss for the country and as many people are saying, a loss for the world. Actually, just a remarkable figure whos sort of embedded in all of our memories, no matter what your age. Really one of the greats. Yeah great yeah absolutely. Great well, Ellie Costello looks back now at his life and his career. Ca reer. Career. You know. You know, you speak to people like pele, you know, and beckenbauer and the highlight of their careers was when they played at wembley for the first time, born the son of a coal miner in northumberland in 1937, bobby said the only choices open to him were the mines. The navy or football. Thankfully for the world, he pursued the latter charlesons death leaves sir geoff hurst as the only surviving member of the team that won the world cup. At team that won the world cup. At just 20 years old. A young Bobby Charlton was one of the busby babes involved in the 1958 munich air crash. He survived, munich air crash. He survived, although 23 lives were lost, including those of eight united team members. As up until his team members. As up until his own death , he remained the last own death, he remained the last surviving member of that crash. Surviving member of that crash. Aligncenter and Bobby Charlton slams the ball home. Bobby charlton was named in the england squad for four world cups at the time of his retirement from the england team in 1970. Im a footballer and didnt just tried my best and hoped that that my ability was was good enough to get me some success, which ive been lucky enough to have done. He helped to promote londons successful bid for the 2012 olympics. This is such a fun place and people love london. People love london and we get them here and well give them such a fantastic time. In his personal life, Bobby Charlton married his wife, norma ball, in 1961. They had two daughters, suzanne and andrea in november 2020, it was revealed that sir Bobby Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia, as did several of his 1966 team mates. He stepped back from public life and has rarely been seen in recent years. As sir bobby recent years. As sir Bobby Charlton will remain a name synonymous with the beautiful game. Game. And as the front page of the sunday times says, one of their writers says with his passing being a little bit of england has just died. I think hes a its a valid point, isnt it . Lets talk to former england manager Sam Allardyce, who joins us now. Its really good to see you this morning, sam. I mean, this is remarkable in the sense that whether youre a football fan or not, he still had a role to play in sort of all of our lives somehow. Yes absolutely. I think that particularly as a as a person , not i mean, a as a person, not i mean, everybody knew him as a footballer, a greater footballer. He was just what he contributed to Manchester United and england. But i think when you got to know him , i didnt you got to know him, i didnt i didnt get to know him, know him as it were. But every time i went to old trafford, sir Alex Ferguson in the boardroom, you would bump into sir bobby and have a chat away him and so have a chat away with him and so on and so forth. So it was a great ambassador for Manchester United and a great ambassador for football and england and such and such a kind person. I think what everybody as think thats what everybody as tribute is explaining to what a great, great guy he was. What a contribution he made to football for england and for Manchester United. And of course, as united. And of course, as a youngster, i watched him in the World Cup Final on my black and white tv at the time. All those years ago. But it was a pleasure to know him every time i went to old trafford, hed stop and have a chat with you. Hed come over and see and say, how you doing, sam . Happening your sam . Whats happening in your career . Uh, yeah, a career . So uh, yeah, just a great guy. Yeah. I mean, he was a midfielder, wasnt he . And thats why he was so particularly chosen for the team. But my goodness , he could team. But my goodness, he could score some incredible goals. Score some incredible goals. Goals . Yeah absolutely. I think that he was. He was unique in the fact that he could score from, well, what seemed to be almost most of his goals from outside the box. And he used to go on these long runs beating 1 or 2 people and then he fire it in with the left or right foot. Of course. And, you know, obviously famously scoring in the world cup and then for Manchester United scoring in the in Champions League final. In the Champions League final. But said, his but like i said, his contribution for Manchester United, england and for football, of course, was was outstanding. And then of course, as an ambassador for Manchester United and a director, he could travel across the world because everybody knew sir Bobby Charlton yeah, i wonder if he had a bigger impact in that role on the board than perhaps we realise, because you look back at people like sir alex and the start of his managerial career, which was not, you know, covered in glory. In glory. If it wasnt for bobby on the board, could there have been a different future for man united . Different future for man united . Its hard to say, but i mean, sir alex and sir bobby got on famously like i mean, as he did with with sir matt busby. And i think that in those difficult times for sir alex, perhaps the backing of sir bobby in the boardroom was needed and perhaps he gave that. But obviously i dont know. But he was certainly a man that he who saw the quality of sir Alex Ferguson , quality of sir Alex Ferguson, thats for sure. And they had a great friendship as well. So yeah, i mean, and you can also say and a lot of the writers about him are today are saying he had true northern grit. He came from a footballing family. Yes. But were also family. Yes. But there were also a family. And hed also a mining family. And hed also seen , sadly, his share of seen, sadly, his share of tragedy because he was part of the terrible air crash at munich i yes, its sort of, you know, what you what you think of that team might have done and it survived. I mean, that was one of the things that you think about. I mean, the quality of player who to mind , player who comes to mind, particularly for me, would be duncan edwards, who came from the same area as me in dudley, you but i mean the same area as me in dudley, you buti mean mean the same area as me in dudley, you but i mean mean to you mean. But i mean i mean to actually survive that tragedy and then sir matt busby rebuilding the busbys the busby babes yet again to be as good as they were was, was quite outstanding. I mean , but yes, outstanding. I mean, but yes, a tragic loss. Um, obviously at tragic loss. Um, obviously at that particular time when youve seen the documentaries they were telling or saying that the plane shouldnt have really tried to take off, but they needed to get back. But you know, luckily for football and for his family and for Manchester United, sir bobby survived. And for england , of survived. And for england, of course, are we really coming to the end of an era . I mean , obviously sir geoff, i mean, obviously sir geoff, sir geoff hurst is still with us and hopefully will be for a good long while yet. But i mean, what they went through, what they achieved in 66 and at a time when we only had, you know, 2 or 3 channels on the telly and all the rest of it united the country in a way that we sort of dont get now. Dont get now. Well, certainly the millions of millions of people that would would be watching and following that particular game, you know, would be would be unbelievable to think about how many millions not just in this country, but across the world like you mean. And of course , having so few and of course, having so few channels at the time, everybody would be ready and waiting hours and hours before the kick off to watch what you watch was a fabulous game. And of course, youd see a lot of people that would tell you that they didnt like football. But in this particular case, would particular case, they would actually to watch it. Actually get ready to watch it. It an occasion for everybody it was an occasion for everybody in sit around there, in england to sit around there, sit around their settee , sit sit around their settee, sit around their television and watch this great event. And what a great event it was, how it unfolded. You know, the last minute goal by germany, then the extra time and then we think its all over and it is now. Sir geoff hursts hat so geoff hursts hat trick. So unfortunately we havent been able to win it again since, which makes it even more important. Important. Yeah, absolutely incredible times. Its lovely to talk to you. Thanks very much indeed. Its a perfect way of talking to you to pay perfect way of talking to you to pay tribute to a great gentleman , an only sir bobby would have got me up at this time on a sunday. By the way. Yeah. By the way. Yeah. There you go. Thank you. There you go. Thank you. Thanks, sir. Thanks, sir. Thanks, sir. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, i do just think its fascinating because people like i mean, i think Sam Allardyce is legendary in his own in his own way. One of those people that way. One of those people that ive you know, the name that ive you know, the name that ive always known in my early years then and all these years and then and all these people sort bow down to people who sort of bow down to people who sort of bow down to people like Bobby Charlton and rightly so, rightly so. Johns been in touch, he says. He was my older brothers generation and my parents. He is everything british everything about British Values and respect that i respect and i think people like that. Yeah, you see, thats thats interesting, isnt it . Because i think he was quite i think he was respectful. Yes, he was. And that and were losing that in society now, which is a real shame. And i would agree with you on that. Darrel says the death sir bobby a huge death of sir bobby is a huge loss football and the sports loss to football and the sports world. Well thats a very world. Well yeah, thats a very true point. More on that coming up throughout the course of the morning of course. Lets just turn our attention now to the middle east, where as we reported yesterday, 28 trucks were able finally to cross the rafah border , thats the rafah border, thats the egyptian border into gaza. But egyptian border into gaza. But the United Nations says that at least 100 are needed every day , least 100 are needed every day, though its an operation. Of course , thats fraught of course, thats fraught with danger. An israeli airstrike has exploded in a refugee camp market in central gaza and that now we know has resulted in fatal bodies and injuries. Thats according to the interior ministry. The interior ministry. Israel said its going to intensify attacks on the north of the gaza strip now that most civilians are out. Thats according to the idf. According to the idf. And meanwhile, israel has vowed to punish iran for its involvement in hamass kibbutz massacre. And promised that if the iranian backed hezbollah joined in, then the bombs would fly. Well, President Biden has called on rishi sunak to legislate irans Islamic Revolutionary guard as terrorists in the wake of tehrans complicity in the hamas massacre of 1400 people in israel. Israel. And meanwhile, back home, 100,000 people took part in a pro palestinian protest in london yesterday with many more thousands attending marches in other cities throughout the uk. Yeah, theyre calling for an end to the conflict in the middle east. Demand that the government stop supporting israels actions. Israels actions. And were taken to understand that israeli officials have ordered the evacuation of a further 14 communities along israels northern border with lebanon. Lebanon. Well, lets talk to our Homeland Security editor, mark white, whos live in tel aviv for us this morning. Whats the latest update, mark . Well, as we speak , there is well, as we speak, there is another alert to the south of tel aviv in the southern outskirts of the city. Rishon lezion, which is a city just a few miles to the south of tel aviv. The sirens sounded about five minutes or so ago. We heard the telltale thud of the explosive charges of the iron dome system as it fired into the action there to intercept what were told was a barrage of rockets heading towards the tel aviv area. So that is still ongoing at the moment in addition to that, as you said in your introduction there, the news that just broke within the last hour that another 14 communities in northern israel on the border with southern lebanon have been ordered to evacuate. And that is because of evacuate. And that is because of the increased activity from the hezb ebola group up there who have been firing rockets just over night. Were trying, were told, to fire anti tank missiles across the border as well. But the Israeli Defence forces have said that they intercepted those hezbollah fighters who were in the process of doing that and have neutralised that particular threat. But there are increasing actions that are now being undertaken by hezbollah senior idf commanders are saying that hezbollah is playing a very dangerous game in upping the ante in carrying out these strikes. And of course, it all strikes. And of course, it all plays into this wider concern about the potential for the conflict right. Between israel and the Hamas Terror Group to widen into a regional war. And do we know anything more of the aid thats been going in from yesterday through the rafah border . Are we likely to see any border . Are we likely to see any more of that at. Well, thats certainly the hope, and i think that will be what plays out in the hours and days ahead. Fewer than 30 trucks managed to make it across the border with vital aid supplies as, of course, they are welcome home. But if you take into consideration that on an average day before this conflict, there was about 500 trucks that would cross that border from egypt. It cross that border from egypt. It gives an indication of just how things have dried up or been prevented really from reaching gaza. Prevented really from reaching gaza. And those people who are gaza. And those people who are now massing in Southern Gaza and who desperately need, of course , who desperately need, of course, these supplies. Now, what these so far anyway, these trucks that have come over from from egypt do not contain a fuel supplies because there are real concerns is that israel has that the second these fuel supplies come over as vital as of course they are are for the likes of the hospitals and other daily sort of tasks that need to be carried out, just like bakeries , for out, just like bakeries, for instance, who need to bake the bread to keep people sustain gained. They need fuel supplies desperately. Theyre running out. But as vital as those fuel suppues out. But as vital as those fuel supplies are, israel really believes that there is no doubt at all that at the moment any fuel supplies is crossing that border from egypt would be then intercepted by Hamas Terrorists and used by them. Okay , mark, back to you later okay, mark, back to you later on. For now , thanks very much indeed. Right. Right. Time is just coming up to 7 20 now. Now, rishi sunak is set to mark his first year in number 10. That will be on wednesday. But hes got problems at home and abroad. At home and abroad. Yeah, the mail this morning is reporting that up to 25 mps could be set to hand in letters of no confidence to the 22 1922 committee after the loss of two by elections on thursday. Theyve not been able to hand any in up until hes been in office for a year. And of course, on top of that, hes got the channel migrant crisis and the war in ukraine and the middle east. Theyre just adding to his woes. Lets talk to political commentator piers pottinger. Commentator piers pottinger. Good morning to you, piers. Good morning. Look, i dont know if this is true or not, but these 25 mps, its not enough to spark a vote of no confidence. But are they just desperately trying press the trying to press the Self Destruct button . Think youre both well, i think youre both too young remember an old game young to remember an old game there used to be called instant insanity. And thats what insanity. And thats what i think these 25 mps, if they exist, are playing now. This is sheer madness because the 1 1 factor about election campaigns is that nobody ever votes in a divided party. There isnt time for a new leader. In fact, what for a new leader. In fact, what rishi really needs to do is start delivering now. He doesnt need to reshuffle all the rumours about a reshuffle next week. I dont believe thatll happen. I hope not, because again, i think thats another example of instant insanity. Example of instant insanity. Its hes facing all kinds of problems and also were in world terms at a very dangerous time. And the last thing we need to do is remove a Prime Minister who may not be the most exciting, may not be the most exciting, may not be good at communicating with the ordinary person in the street, but hes steady. Hes street, but hes steady. Hes a man of integrity and hes proved by his diplomatic tour that he has had some effect. And to replace him now, i dont know who with. Well, thats the exactly. I mean, its crazy. And i do hope these so called tory rebels have a good look in the mirror and think to themselves, what on earth are you doing . Theyre not helping the party. Theyre not helping the party. Theyre not helping the party. Theyre not helping the country. Theyre not helping the country. And the last thing we need is in stability in this country at the moment. But could it be a way of putting pressure on him to, as some tories say, to become more conservative . Yes, well, of course. I mean, there are lots of people whod like to see tax cuts and theres an awful lot of talk about inherited tax, which i personally think is a rather a sideline. I personally think is a rather a sideline. I dont think personally think is a rather a sideline. I dont think thats sideline. I dont think thats going to win an election. But proper cuts , there are signs proper tax cuts, there are signs that the economy is growing is beginning to grow. And so jeremy hunts Austerity Campaign is beginning to pay off. And tragically, i fear that what will happen has happened so often in the past. The labour party will capture an economy thats just on the up and then destroy it. But i mean, the interesting thing about the by elections was something that very few people are really talking about was the success of the reform party because in both cases, if the people whod voted for reform had voted conservative, which would have been the most likely they would have won. So the reform party , have won. So the reform party, not the lib dems, not the labour party, are the biggest danger to the conservatives because many people will vote reform whove said theyre going to stand in every constituency. Nc and its every constituency. Nc and its about 5, isnt it . Yeah and i mean that that is a very significant number. And so yes, hes got to get more conservative. Hes got to deliver some Old Fashioned conservative stuff and hes got to hes got to put in a bit more passion. His speech at the conference was was worthy but had no passion and the business about vaping and smoking and stuff really and people are not that interested. Theyre not going to win you a general election. No, not at all. Not at all. But i mean, starmer has played it very safe at the moment he has no policies. Hes not saying one thing nor the other. Hes had 13 years in opposition to come up with Something Big and theyve come up with nothing themselves. Up with nothing themselves. Elves. Is playing a very elves. But he is playing a very dangerous game because one trip up could lose him. The election , up could lose him. The election, rather like when neil kinnock became too, i was going to think he literally tripped up on the beach. He tripped up on the beach, but he was so smart about winning. Everyone turned against him and of course starmer is very conscious of that and playing it very carefully. But i would say to these 25, if youre thinking of putting a letter in on wednesday, dont do that. Rip it up and put it in the wastepaper basket where those letters belong. Okay , piers, good to see you. Okay, piers, good to see you. Thanks very much indeed. Yeah, interesting indeed. Do let us know your views. Weve already had tony in suffolk. Morning, saying penny morning, tony, saying Penny Mordaunt way as prime mordaunt all the way as Prime Minister here. Keith says david davis, and keith says david davis, the tories need a leader who could damage they could limit the damage they could limit the damage they could at the next could suffer at the next election. And sharp intake election. And his sharp intake of from piers sat next to me. Yes, indeed. Yes, indeed. Anyway, look, lets have a look at the weather. Should we cause storm babet may have passed, left passed, but shes left devastation wake. Killing passed, but shes left deleast ion wake. Killing passed, but shes left deleast four wake. Killing passed, but shes left deleast four people. Ike. Killing passed, but shes left deleast four people. Yes killing passed, but shes left deleast four people. Yes north] at least four people. Yes north sea had to be airlifted sea workers had to be airlifted off an oil rig after the anchors came loose. Crumbs and flooding across the vast area of the uk will take weeks to clean up. Now, not only that, but theres been travel disruption. Kings cross station forced to shut yesterday because of all the delays. Everything else, it was overcrowding a result. Was overcrowding as a result. And doubts many and there are doubts about many of operating this morning. Well, lets cross live now to derby, were joined by gb derby, where were joined by gb news West Midlands reporter jack carson. Hi there, jack. Whats the and particularly the latest . And particularly there where you are . There where you are . Well, if i just step out of the way a second, you can see that this section of the a52 just outside the city centre is completely flooded and some cars have ignored, obviously the road closed signs and tried to come down here thinking the flooding isnt that bad, but it is here in derby yesterday, three severe flood warnings were issued , a flood warnings were issued, a major declared by the Major Incident declared by the city council because the river dennent , which probably about dennent, which is probably about 100m in front of me , did reach 100m in front of me, did reach its highest ever levels, 3. 5m high. Now the good news for people of this city is that there hasnt been any rainfall here overnight. That means that the river dennent is starting to steady as what the official kind of flood warnings in terms of the trend and are now saying. But they still are expecting serious disruption because of the river dennent, because of course the rainfall that its still coming down the river from upper dennent as well. Thats also meant the nottinghamshire have also issued a Major Incident and theyve had some flooding overnight as well. The flooding overnight as well. The nottinghamshire fire service, particularly in retford , are particularly in retford, are urging people at 3 00 this morning to evacuate because of flooding there. So the river trent is now a worry that is expected. The levels there to still continue rising, possibly a further 18in. So there are some worries, particularly around this part of the midlands of course, of this flooding. Now derby derbyshire, Derbyshire Fire Service said on friday they had evacuated 100 people. That increased by a few more hundred yesterday day as other villages around. And the city also had to around. And the city also had to be also had to be evacuated as part of the river dennent also broke its banks as well, including 20 people as part of a care home. Many people taking shelter in in leisure centres and other places where they feel and other places where they feel a lot safer and more on Higher Ground as well. In chesterfield, the mp there saying 400 people had had to leave their homes, many of them worried about what where exactly theyre going to go because many of them, of course, are private tenants dont that dont necessarily have that Flood Insurance as well. But its also caused disruption for other things. The illuminati at matlock bath here in in derby , matlock bath here in in derby, which huge event at this which are a huge event at this time every year, had to be cancelled as well. But for people of course, here in particularly in derby , those particularly in derby, those severe flood warnings still do continue. They still stay in continue. They still stay in place and travel urged, particularly around these areas here where i am on the a52 to know only travel if necessary. And of course, dont attempt to drive into flood water. It seems stupid say, but of course stupid to say, but of course when you when you come up to the water, it doesnt maybe seem a little bit youre not sure how deepit little bit youre not sure how deep it is. And so you take the plunge and drive of course, plunge and drive and of course, and then can get stuck and stranded. Now, West Midlands stranded. Now, the West Midlands fire travel from fire service did travel from birmingham as well birmingham yesterday as well to derbyshire to help out some areas , particularly around the areas, particularly around the villages. I was mentioning where there was some serious flooding and people having to be evacuated. A Specialist Team evacuated. A Specialist Team with of course those those boats to evacuate people were also there as well. But of course the flooding does continue while there is light rainfall expected today because of the of the water still coming up from still coming down the river from quite high on flooding. Is still expected until until tomorrow at least. And of course, much of this disruption because, of course, all the Fire Services having to run work overtime to try and clear the debris , clear, try and clear the debris, clear, of course, the water disruption an could be expected into next week. Okay. Okay. Okay. Thank you very much, indeed. Thank you very much, indeed. Thank you very much, indeed. Thank you, jack. I thought that was a river behind you. I really did when i first went. If youre listening on radio, youre listening on the radio, just standing front of just standing there in front of what looks like a river with a bndge what looks like a river with a bridge going it. But its bridge going over it. But its not. Its a road with a bridge going over. And this is where the and i see this is where the problems come in. Its the a52 that the main link between that is the main link between nottingham and derby. Its a very theres no way very busy road. Theres no way youre going to go on it. Look, dont go anywhere. Weve got the its 733. Good morning. Are you having a good read . Im trying to find something that i know is particularly interesting. Its about diabetes type one, and its little girl type one, and its a little girl of three. And they say theyve made scientific made incredible scientific strides now, which is strides fonnard now, which is completely going to revolutionise everybody. Ill find it later. Dont worry. Itll it. Itll about it. Be what they call close loop. So it was Something Like that. Yeah. So where the sensor that monitors your your interstitial glucose talks directly to the pump and it does it all so its like an artificial pancreas to find out more about a bit later on. More about that a bit later on. Very, very clever. Yeah, man. Its very of you to talk its very good of you to talk about that because obviously a type one diabetic. Is aidan magee. Yes, indeed. Yes, indeed. A little club. Arent like a little club. Arent we, agent . We are indeed. Remember you we are indeed. I remember you did interview, i think did did an interview, i think with couple of with a magazine a couple of years and said it was it was years ago and said it was it was feeling exhausting managing it. Yeah im feeling like that now. Yeah. Not this yeah. Yeah not just this morning, well, thats morning, but just. Well, thats what about this. Morning, but just. Well, thats whithere about this. Its all day every day anymore. Its all day every day anymore. Its a pressure off. A lot of pressure off. Pressure off. Take the pressure off. Take the pressure off. Is it is coming to the nhs it is it is coming to the nhs andits it is it is coming to the nhs and its being pushed by the nhs england leaders. A guy england diabetes leaders. A guy called professor partha carr, who well, who is the who i know very well, who is the biggest advocate for likes biggest advocate for the likes of you that there will of me and you that there will ever country is an ever be in this country is an incredible. And pushing incredible man. And hes pushing and pushing and pushing for all this technology. Isnt it . Good to hear, isnt it . Good to hear, isnt it . Yeah. Good to hear, isnt it . Well, anyway, we should talk about it a bit later on in the program. We get partha on at some point. Hes fantastic, man. Anyway, that. Anyway, enough of that. Yeah. Its not here. Its not. Its not the health segment. Yeah. No. Although it could be at times, you know. Go on, adam. What have we got then . Mean, because it was. It then . I mean, because it was. It was sort heartbreak, but with was sort of heartbreak, but with a pride. Pride for a lot of pride. Pride for england did england last night. They did incredibly well. It was incredibly well. Well, it was i mean, time yesterday, i was mean, this time yesterday, i was saying we didnt really know where england were because theyd row. Theyd won five games in a row. But havent played but they havent played anyone notes. And anyone of any notes. And look, you only whats in you can only beat whats in front of you, but given where england prior prior to england were prior to prior to the the baptism of the tournament, the baptism of baptism fire, as might baptism of fire, as you might call Steve Borthwick, first 810 months but know months in charge. But you know what . They can walk away what . I think they can walk away from world their from this world cup with their heads held yeah, south heads held high. Yeah, south africa. Yes. Theyd lost to ireland earlier in the tournament, the tournament, but ireland were the best world. They best team in the world. They overcame last week. Overcame france last week. Theyre in the world theyre now in the world cup final theyre now in the World Cup Final, england final, of course, but england led three minutes from led until three minutes from time. Um, and they got their tactics absolutely they tactics absolutely spot on. They forced into various forced south africa into various changes matches changes throughout the matches which but which eventually paid off. But it relatively, know, it was a relatively, you know, there areas of inexperience there was areas of inexperience around the england england squad there was areas of inexperience arouthe he england england squad there was areas of inexperience arouthe englandind england squad there was areas of inexperience arouthe england side,|gland squad there was areas of inexperience arouthe england side, but1d squad there was areas of inexperience arouthe england side, but they uad and the england side, but they acquitted extremely acquitted themselves extremely well. Better well. I havent seen a better full performance full back performance than id seen 22 old freddie seen from 22 year old freddie steward in many a long year. Owen farrell had been criticising to the criticising the lead up to the tournament. Was suspended at tournament. He was suspended at the he came the very beginning. He came of age last night. And you know what nearly did and what they so nearly did it. And i that england could i always felt that england could come party some point. Come to the party at some point. Yes. They hadnt faced yes. Okay. They hadnt faced some really tough opposition. But to give an of but to give an account of themselves last night, themselves like that last night, i they can walk away with i think they can walk away with with pride and steve Steve Borthwick much in borthwick said as much in his press got press conference and hes got some players well, steven, some players as well, steven, that build a team that they can build a team around for four time. And around for four years time. And for six nations before that. For the six nations before that. Yeah thinking bobby yeah im thinking of Bobby Charlton, last night charlton, manu one last night didnt they did 2 1. Yeah didnt they . They did 2 1. Yeah they didnt, they did. Well actually mean they, actually united, i mean they, they, they actually responded quite they have quite well. They would have known was known before 4 00 of what was going when youre going on. But when youre playing an away ground, even playing at an away ground, even as local like as one relatively local like sheffield respond like that sheffield to respond like that was they was very, very good. They managed sheffield managed to. Sheffield united managed to. Sheffield united managed up on managed to get pictures up on the big screen. They wore the black armbands. Bruno fernandez had had wreath as well. Had the had the wreath as well. And its important to and i think its important to assess terms assess Bobby Charlton in terms of he meant to the modern of what he meant to the modern Manchester United, influence Manchester United, the influence he beckhams he had over David Beckhams career. A journalist from career. I know a journalist from east wrote book east london who wrote a book called englands east enders back about years ago, and he back about 15 years ago, and he covered beckhams career covered David Beckhams career at of and he went at the age of nine. And he went to he was invited up to old trafford by ted beckhams father, saying, saying, look, hes bobby hes got hes in the Bobby Charlton soccer skills thing this went up there, this weekend. He went up there, of and it. And of course, and he won it. And that was his introduction to manchester and Manchester United. And of course, Alex Ferguson. Course, sir Alex Ferguson. The first years at old first 3 or 4 years at old trafford, where things were not going well. He always going very well. And he always spoke the loyalty he spoke about the loyalty he experienced Bobby Charlton, experienced from Bobby Charlton, bobby school then . Yes. Did that sort of start the whole Football Academy move . Say that no, i wouldnt say that because well , yes no. Because well, yes, yes and no. I mean, we hadnt it didnt really exist before that terms of exist before that in terms of getting under one roof. Yeah. And when were very young and when we were very young and there, we spoke and nurturing, there, we spoke about documentary about the Netflix Documentary with beckham, didnt we . A couple of weeks ago, his father, ted, was a huge, huge Bobby Charlton took his son Bobby Charlton fan, took his son david and david into the back garden and taught kick the ball like taught him to kick the ball like Bobby Charlton and i find Bobby Charlton and i. I find that extraordinary legacy isnt Bobby Charlton and i. I find that is, aordinary legacy isnt Bobby Charlton and i. I find that is, yeah. Ary legacy isnt Bobby Charlton and i. I find that is, yeah. And egacy isnt Bobby Charlton and i. I find that is, yeah. And thats isnt Bobby Charlton and i. I find that is, yeah. And thats why it . It is, yeah. And thats why david has said this David Beckham has said this morning was absolute morning that he was an absolute hero to everybody. And i think, you know, and just getting back to things to Alex Ferguson, there, things were for him. He was were going badly for him. He was the football voice in the boardroom with boardroom saying, stick with this know a good football this guy. I know a good football man. One, just give man. When i see one, just give him little bit time. Him a little bit more time. Dont forget, ferguson dont forget, Alex Ferguson arrived outsider at old arrived as an outsider at old trafford. Made his at trafford. Hed made his name at aberdeen in scotland. Hed never set england in a set foot inside england in a football in of football sense in terms of management, and he needed a sympathetic the sympathetic voice in the boardroom, exactly boardroom, and thats exactly what in. What he got in. Bobby charlton had sir Bobby Charlton weve had a message tony in a nice message from tony in hayling island. Says, i was sorry, he just says, i was working in saudi for a pharmaceutical company. We heard Bobby Charlton his academy Bobby Charlton and his academy were town teaching were in a local town teaching football wandered football skills. So i wandered over to see if i over during a break to see if i could have chat, and he signed could have a chat, and he signed a football for me. Yes. I wonder if youve still got it. Yeah, that quite something. You hope you have. Something. Adrian, e you have. Something. Adrian, were have. Something. Adrian, were going to catch up with you a little bit later on. Absolutely. Very much indeed. And new survey has indeed. And a new survey has suggested from home has suggested working from home has put midweek dinner parties back on well, how very on the menu. Gosh well, how very middle class. Well bring you more in headline makers n ext next this is breakfast with stephen and anne. Yes, good morning. 742 shall we have a look through the headunes shall we have a look through the headlines this morning with the writer emma woolf the editor writer emma woolf and the editor of tom slater. Writer emma woolf and the editor of tom slater. Good of spiked, tom slater. Good morning both. Good morning to you both. Good morning to you both. Good morning the mail. On sunday, morning to the mail. On sunday, emma shoplifters the problem which seems to be getting worse. Which seems to be getting worse. Yeah, weve talked a lot on this programme about the surge in in retail crime and about the polices seeming inability , polices seeming inability, ineptitude to do anything about it. Now the governments latest plan, we know theres been a huge cost to businesses over the past few years. Billions cost to businesses, big businesses like tesco and all the big supermarkets, but also smaller, smaller outlets that smaller retail outlets that are just, know, really seeing just, you know, really seeing their rise. Their profits rise. Idea being that the the idea being that the Police Wont Investigate shoplifting wont shoplifting really, they wont investigate shoplifting because its dont have enough they dont have enough resources. They often wont follow cctv images or follow up cctv, cctv images or its grainy or they even when in areas where, you know, local people are known to be literally walking in with impunity or filling their rucksacks with almost , you know, nick to order almost, you know, nick to order kind of things, you know, beer, expensive , expensive items that expensive, expensive items that they can just up and then they can just load up and then walking off. Retail staff are getting attacked and abused and threatened if they try and challenge people. And obviously, its a very frightening situation anyway. The situation to be in anyway. The governments is governments latest idea is theyre put ankle tags, theyre going to put ankle tags, gps , tracking devices on gps tagging, tracking devices on shoplifters , on persistent shoplifters, on persistent shoplifters, on persistent shoplifters. Given that the shoplifters. Given that the police cant follow up even more serious crimes, one wonders how on earth theyre going to track. How are they going to help track them at all times. But thats not movement. They could still track but they could still track them tesco and them going into tesco and filling then they should filling and then they should follow then follow them up and then they should up, investigate should follow up, investigate them. Will provide with if but it will provide with if they anything it would they did anything else, it would provide wouldnt provide evidence, wouldnt it . You in that store at that you were in that store at that time, but we know that already. Have these of we have cctv of these of these people. We dont have we have cctv of these of these p space we dont have we have cctv of these of these p space in dont have we have cctv of these of these p space in prisons. Ave we have cctv of these of these p space in prisons. So enough space in prisons. So around 5000 going to not of around 5000 are going to not of persistent offenders are going to be in prison unless to not be put in prison unless unless given a like a unless theyre given a like a boundanes unless theyre given a like a boundaries that they cant go to , in which in which case somebody would cross, but it would ping the system. Well, but with gps quite labour with gps its quite labour intensive. Needs intensive. Somebody needs to be intensive. Somebody needs to be in of gps and tracking in charge of gps and tracking people. Also. Theres a lot of people. Also. Theres a lot of questions around you cantjust people. Also. Theres a lot of que ankle around you cant just people. Also. Theres a lot of que ankle tags1d you cant just people. Also. Theres a lot of que ankle tags on ou cant just people. Also. Theres a lot of que ankle tags on people. T just people. Also. Theres a lot of que ankle tags on people. What put ankle tags on people. What if theyre young people . You cant just put them on. They need maintained. They need to be maintained. They need to and all to be fitted and removed and all of that. Youve something against somebody order to be able to somebody in order to be able to put tag put an ankle tag on. Presumably youve to presumably youve got to catch first. Presumably youve got to catnand first. Presumably youve got to catnand theyre . Presumably youve got to catnand theyre not even trying and theyre not even trying to catch them. And if you caught them, caught charge caught them, then charge them rather think rather than, you know, i think this raises lot of questions this raises a lot of questions to me. This smacks of the kind of bibby stockholm rwanda idea, this have this big this kind of we have this big problem. Not sure what to problem. Were not sure what to do. Lets come up with a really ludicrous solution like the wave machine. Remember but in its remember that . But in its that thing. That kind of thing. The water cannon. Or the water cannon. Or the water cannon. Exactly. Flashy. It gets exactly. Its flashy. It gets some but at the same some headlines. But at the same time, the fundamental is time, the fundamental problem is that been kind that shoplifting has been kind of quasi of almost like quasi decriminalised. This is a decriminalised. And this is a big you see it in big problem. You see it in america. Theyve had tremendous troubles had actually in because youve had actually in some then some cases, actually then passing saying were passing laws saying were not really to prosecute really going to prosecute or changing regulations, so we wont you steal wont prosecute unless you steal above amount. You go above a certain amount. You go to york city. At the moment, to new york city. At the moment, if to buy toothpaste, if you want to buy toothpaste, they it out from they have to get it out from behind kind locker. So this behind a kind of locker. So this is happens when allow is what happens when you allow this to rampant. Its not this to run rampant. Its not that loads of people are suddenly turning to life of suddenly turning to a life of crime. Small crime. Its that the very small proportion of people who do do the theyve the shoplifting. No that theyve got they got a green light now so they can and do it. Can run around and do it. And our stores are not staffed by people anymore. You and our stores are not staffnhave people anymore. You and our stores are not staffnhave psecurity ymore. You and our stores are not staffnhave pSecurity Guard. You and our stores are not staffnhave pSecurity Guard onnu and our stores are not staffnhave pSecurity Guard on the may have a Security Guard on the doon may have a Security Guard on the door, you often have one door, but you often have one shop assistant behind the tills door, but you often have one sho;the;istant behind the tills door, but you often have one sho;the;ista|ofbehind the tills door, but you often have one sho;the;ista|of ithind the tills door, but you often have one sho;the;ista|of ithirgoing tills door, but you often have one sho;the;ista|of ithirgoing to ls and the rest of it is going to be automatic people can be automatic tills so people can just at quiet times of just wander in at quiet times of the day, fill up their rucksack just wander in at quiet times of the takefill up their rucksack just wander in at quiet times of the take 0ff. Jp their rucksack just wander in at quiet times of the take off. Wellzir rucksack just wander in at quiet times of the take off. Wellzir ruck see and take off. Well i cant see how gps is going to how wearing gps tags is going to make any difference. Whats the alternative ball and chain . Well, might i mean, well, now that might i mean, it it would work. It would work. It would work. To monitor if you dont have to monitor that, just up. That, you just tie them up. That would it. Well, that would be it. I dont know. Bring back stocks. Bring back the stocks. I dont stocks. Youve got to dont know stocks. Youve got to catch and thats the catch them first. And thats the point. Nobodys catching them. And retail and you cant rely on retail staff them because staff to confront them because thats a dangerous thing do. Thats a dangerous thing to do. Its dangerous. Yeah. Yeah yeah. Yeah tom, lets have at tom, lets have a look at this we this tube situation. Should we was this chanting this tube situation. Should we wa a this chanting this tube situation. Should we wa a tube. This chanting on a tube. Yeah. So it was a free palestine chant which video palestine chant which a video which doing the rounds which has been doing the rounds on seems suggest on social media seems to suggest that its being over the that its being started over the tannoy from the tannoy wherever thats from the driver on the driver or someone else on the train people joining train and then people joining in. It in. Theres some images of it now screen. And this is now on screen. And this is something sparked something which has sparked a police probe. So the British Transport Police working with transport police is working with tfl work out has tfl to try and work out what has gone on here. Is it alleged the tube is it alleged that the tube driver was starting the chant seemingly and or whoevers in control of the tannoy, as it were . Either that or just as someone whos kind of elsewhere, probably i think someone whos kind of elsewhere, prob. Only i think someone whos kind of elsewhere, prob. Only have i think someone whos kind of elsewhere, prob. Only have drivers hink someone whos kind of elsewhere, prob. Only have drivers on k someone whos kind of elsewhere, prob. Only have drivers on them. They only have drivers on them. Exactly. Its not guards on tube trains. Thats thats trains. No, no, thats thats the question. Im not the question. And im not suggesting that this person should be, you know , arrested or should be, you know, arrested or anything like that. There can be anything like that. There can be a overreaction. A sort of overreaction. Obviously, nothing obviously, its not if nothing else, inappropriate for else, its inappropriate for a tube be engaging in tube driver to be engaging in political chants. But obviously, the is very the broader context is very important because we are only just, just a couple of important because we are only just, past just a couple of important because we are only just, past the just a couple of important because we are only just, past the most] couple of important because we are only just, past the most horrendous weeks past the most horrendous act anti semitic slaughter. Act of anti semitic slaughter. And kind of jubilant and youve got kind of jubilant pro palestine which pro palestine chants, which obviously in and themselves obviously in and of themselves might innocuous , but in might sound innocuous, but in certain going certain contexts are going to sound and sound quite menacing. And whilst, i dont people whilst, as i say, i dont people will you you wouldnt want to be a jew on that tube train. I think this is how intimidating it is. And also, were not talking here about one the chants here about one of the chants which explicitly of which has explicitly kind of anti semitic in a anti semitic content, but in a certain quite certain context, it can be quite menacing. Golders menacing. You think in Golders Green the day after the green and the day after the massacres, someone scrawling free palestine over the railway bridge, thats obviously a kind of racist taunt masquerading as Something Else. Yeah. So in this instance, saying heads instance, im not saying heads should not saying should roll. Im not saying at the least, individual the very least, this individual should talking this is the very least, this individual sho case talking this is the very least, this individual sho case becauseing this is the very least, this individual sho case because you this is the very least, this individual sho case because you cant; is the case because you cant have two engaging and two drivers engaging in call and response political chant. Cant control. You dont you cant control. You dont come into your workplace, whatever workplace and whatever your workplace is. And start beliefs. You start chanting your beliefs. You know, there is a there is a time and a place for going on a march if to or for, you know, if you want to or for, you know, having slogan or having your slogan or your banner whatever it but banner or whatever it is. But theres absolutely highly inappropriate that a tube driver should the tannoy to should be using the tannoy to express their on on express their views on on anything , really. Anything, really. Completely. No, completely. No, completely. And this is just yet another sign how things gradually sign of how things gradually escalate if you allow them to. And also bit of an and its also a bit of an indication. Do find it indication. I just do find it strange given the scale of strange that given the scale of what in southern israel strange that given the scale of wha obviously in southern israel strange that given the scale of wha obviously the southern israel strange that given the scale of wha obviously the suffering israel and obviously the suffering amongst in is amongst civilians in gaza is horrendous well. Those horrendous as well. And those people you know, people are always, you know, should be considered should should also be considered here. But the fact that we had that happen and people were concerned for about concerned about it for about 24 hours, upset hours, it was a story upset people. Came and went. And people. It came and went. And then suddenly whole response then suddenly the whole response was of these street was this kind of these street demonstrations, which as weve been talking about, have lapsed in into some pro in many cases into some pro hamas pogrom sort of hamas pro pogrom sort of messaging that should really concern us. I think the fact that the solidarity for the israeli jews who were slaughtered so brief and slaughtered was so brief and then of often times in then the kind of often times in terms of this video, almost quite sort of jubilant, it it does seem it seem very odd does seem it does seem very odd that that our attention an that our that our attention an im not saying its wrong that you look at whats happening in gaza, the fact that its gaza, but the fact that its switched so very quickly to this being and thats why when we found when we interview israeli or jewish commentators , they or jewish commentators, they come back. In fact, almost instantly their first answer to whatever you ask them is to remind you of what happened two weeks ago. And when you are reminded and of course the evidence now thats coming out of their investigations into that just of how barbaric it was , horrendous how barbaric it was, horrendous and. And so we do need and barbaric. And so we do need to remember what started it all. Yeah , look, lets change tax significantly. Should we . We need to lighten things up a little bit for you this morning. Mail sunday. This morning. Mail on sunday. Emma midweek dinner emma says midweek dinner parties. It just reminds me this is a good life and were they stephen youve taken the words right out of my mouth. Right out of my mouth. And it was margot and jerry. And jerry. And jerry. And jerry. And jerry. Barbara. Barbara midweek dinner parties. They had their heyday in the 1970s, but apparently, just to get back to the story , apparently now, to the story, apparently now, because of lots of people working from home, hybrid working from home, hybrid working where youre sort of half office, half at half in the office, half at home, a real home, theyre having a real comeback people starting to comeback. People are starting to order. You know, the survey says people are starting to order lots and lots and lots of food to be delivered. Wednesdays, thursdays ordering, thursdays and their ordering, more wine and dessert. Theyre ordering cakes and cheese. Yeah , all the kind of nice dinner. All the kind of gatto. All the kind of gatto. I think maybe theyre i think theyre maybe theyre extrapolating wildly from the fact that are ordering fact that people are ordering lots dessert. Lots of wine and dessert. Maybe they just feel depressed the state of the depressed at the state of the country of the country and the state of the world. Anyway. Chocolate eclairs peak the orders peak on a wednesday. The orders for a wednesday. So conclusion to all this so the conclusion to all this is apparently midweek is that apparently midweek dinner parties back right . Dinner parties are back right . So where are all my invitations . So where are all my invitations . I havent been invited out tuesday , wednesday or thursday, i havent been invited out tuermaybe iiednesday or thursday, i havent been invited out tuermaybe itdnesday or thursday, i havent been invited out tuermaybe it doesiay or thursday, i havent been invited out tuermaybe it does to or thursday, i havent been invited out tuermaybe it does to throw1rsday, i havent been invited out tuermaybe it does to throw a;day, but maybe it does to throw a dinner party or at least to be invited to a dinner party does cheer up your midweek. They have more prepare food more time to prepare food so they can be chopping veg they can be chopping their veg while call or whatever. I dont know that ive ever been to a dinner party. Certainly never hosted been to a dinner party. But certainly never hosted been to a dinner party. But maybe nly never hosted been to a dinner party. But maybe we never hosted been to a dinner party. But maybe we shouldiosted been to a dinner party. But maybe we should bring one. But maybe we should bring them know, as a nation. You know, as a nation. You know, as a nation. I see. I see. I see. I dont like it. Thats when i get netflix and binge watch i get netflix on and binge watch something chill out. Something and chill out. There you go. Not there you go. Well, not alone. Pets, you alone. Ive got pets, but, you know. Its better than just know. Welcome to your latecraig snell. Well, recast. Good morning. Welcome to your latecraig snell. Well, looking im craig snell. Well, looking ahead much drier ahead to todays a much drier and right across and brighter day right across the especially so the country, but especially so for scotland. We do have some showers to contend with, especially across more western parts. They may at times just creep a little bit further east. But i think the further east you are greater chance of staying dry throughout the day. Dry right throughout the day. Best of sunshine will also best of the sunshine will also be eastern could be towards eastern parts. Could still be quite blustery at times across very far north of across the very far north of scotland. And its here were probably the most frequent probably see the most frequent showers many showers and for many temperatures similar to temperatures very similar to what weve seen of recent days. So reaching to so highs reaching around 10 to 12 across scotland , potentially 12 across scotland, potentially up about degrees up to about 15 degrees across the south of england into the south coast of england into the south coast of england into the evening. Any showers across england, wales generally fade in away. Could see some showers just then moving into parts of Northern Ireland. As we go through the course of the night. But across scotland especially turning quite chilly, could see a of frost come dawn a touch of frost come dawn further south, actually some higher cloud just keeping temperatures up around 8 to 9 degrees. We start monday off degrees. So we start monday off on a fairly dry note across the board. Still the risk of some showery outbreaks of rain for Northern Ireland and maybe the very far north of scotland. But the best sunshine monday the best of sunshine on monday will be across mainland of will be across mainland parts of scotland because later on in the day, some thicker cloud and some outbreaks of rain will arrive into coast of england. Into the south coast of england. Temperatures for most of us, again, very similar, around average for the time of year. Average for the time of year. Well do stick with us because obviously were going to because obviously were going to be paying more tributes and your tributes well to the sir tributes as well to the sir Bobby Charlton, who sadly died yesterday. But my goodness, what a legacy he has left in all our memories. Yeah, were going to be talking to harry the footballing community expressing their sadness at losing one of the most beloved players of all time. Were going to be talking to former manager Harry Redknapp in just a moment. In the middle east, there are reports of missiles heading towards russian from the gaza strip. Our Homeland Security strip. And this breakfast on news. We this is breakfast on gb news. We well, the tributes are flooding in to sir Bobby Charlton , who in to sir Bobby Charlton, who died yesterday at the age of 86. And from the great and the good, if you like, the beckhams of this world and others. But its your tributes, i think, which which mean the most because everyone is reflecting on how bobby was was part of our history. Our heritage knit it into British Society and even though he was an enormous star, he was very, very well known for having the common touch. And if he saw somebody who wanted an autograph, who just wanted an autograph, who just wanted to say hello, hed come over talk to weve had over and talk to you. Weve had a from bob in norfolk. A message from bob in norfolk. Hi, says, im 63 years hi, bob. He says, im 63 years old now and ive loved sir bobby all my life. He boyhood all my life. He was my boyhood hero about 15 years ago. I was waiting outside old trafford with my mum when he just came walking by me and my mum shouted mr charlton , and to our mr charlton, and to our surprise, he came over to say hello. It was one of the best moments of my life. A true gentleman and an absolutely fantastic footballer. Fantastic footballer. Yeah, you see. And thats what you dont get with a lot of things. Oh, it makes one of the moments of your life when your hero bothers to come over and say hi and hes just nice and normal. Alan says no ones mentioned that a majority of his goals were scored with a heavy leather ball, even heavier when it was wet. It it was wet. Yes, it was. It was a different game, actually, werent he . And werent they . Wasnt he . And helena in essex says sir bobby was at the last game at upton park and west ham beat Manchester United in the lift going he said was going down. He said that was a good game and west ham played well. Was lovely man. Well, well. He was a lovely man. Well, thats the message coming through , isnt it . And through, isnt it . Loud and clear. Lets talk to former football manager Harry Redknapp, who now. Harry, really who joins us now. Harry, really good see you this morning. Good to see you this morning. Isnt that isnt it quite something that this remarkable man, this legendary footballer , that a lot legendary footballer, that a lot of the message is coming through from the great and good and our good viewers listeners as good viewers and listeners as well . He just a nice well . Is wasnt he just a nice man . Man . Absolutely. He was a class act on the pitch. Off the pitch. You know, as a footballer, he came out and just played with skill. He never you never saw him get involved in in doing anything nasty on the pitch. He anything nasty on the pitch. He was just an absolute graceful soul was just an absolute graceful soul, incredible footballer. Soul, incredible footballer. And, you know , if you look back and, you know, if you look back what an achievement you know two brothers, him and jackie playing in a World Cup Winning Team in 66 and came through the youth team at man united and eventually obviously the munich air crash, you know, survived that, thankfully. And but what went on you know his life from then on was was incredible. He just set such a great example. Just set such a great example. He was a great role model to any any sportsman , any person. Any sportsman, any person. I mean, just looking at his football, ive spoken to a great many people just recently who said you can look at some of that old footage and some amazing goals, even though he was primarily a midfielder, that any of that footage would stand up against the standards we expect of our footballers now. Oh, listen , he could have oh, listen, he could have been. Hed have been if he was playing today, hed be the best player in this country. You know, he was that good. Theres no doubt about that. He he transcended know, the transcended the, you know, the eras football. And hed have eras of football. And hed have still been an incredible player no matter what area he played in. He he was great for. He would pick the ball up 30 yards out and he could rifle it into the top corner. He did that quite regularly. So for that team he played in there, man united, the original busby babes, you know , pre before the babes, you know, pre before the munich crash and then to play in a team that went to on win the european cup with a great some buzz for the great sir matt busby it was incredible um and law best and charlton was probably the greatest fonnard line well ever see in football. So yeah, he was, he was an amazing footballer and an amazing footballer and an amazing person. Amazing person. We often talk about peoples legacies. I we often talk about peoples legacies. I mean, we often talk about peoples legacies. I mean, its quite legacies. I mean, its quite nice in a way. He must hes been able to his legacy, hasnt able to see his legacy, hasnt he . Because you look at some of the that weve now , i the greats that weve got now, i mean, obviously, you mean, beckham, obviously, you know inspired by by know, hugely inspired by by Bobby Charlton. But what about Bobby Charlton. But what about you . And what about jamie . I you . And what about jamie . I mean, he sort of influenced your lives in that way. Lives in that way. Well, ive still got a scrapbook of the munich, you know , during i remember being at know, during i remember being at school when munich, the munich air crashed at munich disaster when bobby was on that plane and lost half of his team. Great team mates and lots of other great people too. Um, and you know, we collected a scrapbook at that time and i kept that scrapbook where we were following what was happening to all them players in the hospital in munich because there was very Little Information in them days on tv anywhere else, you on tv or anywhere else, you know. Um , and then obviously know. So, um, and then obviously he inspired everybody, i think, with the way he played and i played against him many times. Played against him many times. And he was, he was a gentleman on the pitch and off the pitch. He got on and played with he just got on and played with pure grace and skill. There was nothing. Nasty nothing. Never anything nasty about Bobby Charlton. And of course, he was no. And of course, he was part of that magnificent 1966 World Cup Winning Team , which World Cup Winning Team, which almost, you know, gives gives all of that team the status of hero. And weve only got one left now, havent we . Yeah. Jeff, jeffs the only one. Yeah. It seems incredible , one. Yeah. It seems incredible, you know that that was the greatest team and you know, 1966 will always be special to everybody in this country. It was an amazing time when we won the world cup. And so to have two brothers playing in the same team in a Cup Winning Team is uncle was a great Jackie Milburn , who was a new castle, absolute legend of Newcastle United. So a real footballing family. Um, but real footballing family. Um, but yeah , its so sad to hear the yeah, its so sad to hear the news now, but whenever you went to old trafford in later years, bobby was always there. He would always pop down the dressing room and it was a great ally to sir Alex Ferguson. I that, sir Alex Ferguson. I think that, uh, think alex would say that uh, i think alex would say that he owed an awful lot to bobby. Bobby was always there, always he owed an awful lot to bobby. Bobby was him. |ys there, always he owed an awful lot to bobby. Bobby was him. Well ere, always he owed an awful lot to bobby. Bobby washim. Well ire, always he owed an awful lot to bobby. Bobby washim. Well i mean, iys supported him. Well i mean, look, from, i mean , youve been look, from, i mean, youve been through a lot of clubs in your managerial career. Managerial career. What difference would it make . I mean, to you . I dont know if its ever happened to you where youve got a former player on the board, someone who really understands what the pressures youre through. Youre going through. I think its i think its very important. I think hes a great buffer between you and the boardroom. Um, you know, no boardroom. Um, you know, no disrespect. Youve youve got disrespect. Youve youve got directors havent got great directors who havent got great knowledge of the game and then youve got a man whos been a legend of the game, whos in amongst them, and i think he can guide and a great guide them and hes a great buffer you and the board buffer between you and the board because youll in because at times youll get in difficult situations and he understands what youre going through. I mean, through. He actually i mean, bobby a manager for bobby became a manager for a short you know, short spell. You know, he managed preston north end. I remember him remember playing against him when was manager of preston. When he was manager of preston. Um, went into um, so he actually went into management well. But yeah, management as well. But yeah, just to have him around the place, he was so iconic that everybody at man united, he was for me as, as, as youre saying, the greatest english footballer him and bobby moore would be the two the two bobbys would be the two the two bobbys would be the two greatest english footballers two the two bobbys would be the two g|time. T english footballers two the two bobbys would be the two g|time. Forglish footballers two the two bobbys would be the two g|time. For me,| footballers two the two bobbys would be the two g|time. For me, thatsallers of all time. For me, thats quite something, isnt it . Harry, its lovely to yeah. Harry, its lovely to see you. Its a sad day, but hes left a great legacy, hasnt he . Thank you much indeed. He . Thank you very much indeed. Thats paying thats Harry Redknapp paying another tribute sir Bobby Charlton. You see, gentlemen , on and you see, gentlemen, on and off the pitch. You see, thats. Off the pitch. You see, thats. Ijust off the pitch. You see, thats. I just think thats really important. I think its a lot of what weve lost in British Society lately , you know, and society lately, you know, and that just that idea of respect and being polite and nice and inspirational hero. Yeah, we could do with more. Yeah, we could do with more. Yeah. The heroes that you can meet. Yes its not too grand to come over and say hello as youre proving youve got some lovely stories. Thank you so much. If youve got any stories about how youve got any stories about how you might have met him or nearly did gb views a gbnews. Com do get in touch. Yeah. Do yeah. Do yeah. Do now to the middle east 28 trucks were finally able to cross the rafah border. Thats the egyptian border into gaza. But United Nations says they but the United Nations says they need at least 100 every day. Need at least 100 every day. And according to the interior minister, an israeli airstrike targeted a refugee camp market in central gaza and that has resulted in fatalities and injuries. Well, thats as the Israeli Military has said, its going to intensify attacks on the north of the gaza strip now that most civilians have left. Meanwhile, the United States has called on rishi sunak to recognise irans Islamic Revolutionary guard corps as terrorists. Meanwhile back here, 100,000 people took part in a pro palestinian protest in london yesterday. Many more thousands attending marches in other cities across the uk. And theyre calling for an end to the conflict in the middle east and demanding the government stops supporting israels actions as well. Lets head to tel aviv. Our lets head to tel aviv. Our Homeland Security editor, mark white is there for us. Whats the latest , mark . The latest, mark . Well, we had sirens going off in southern tel aviv just over an hour ago in the community of richon lezion, which is in the Southern Suburbs of tel aviv. A number of rocket barrages intercepted by israels iron dome defence system and just within the last few minutes, more rocket launches towards communities along the border with gaza. Now this comes against a backdrop of the Israeli Military saying that it will intensify and deepen its airstrikes on gaza in preparation for this ground war which now appears to be imminent. Overnight, dozens of sites were struck within gaza itself. Reuters is reporting that 50 palestine liens in gaza have died as a result of those airstrikes. Now, elsewhere in airstrikes. Now, elsewhere in israel, were hearing that 14 communities on the northern border with lebanon have been told to evacuate on the back of dozens of other communities in that area who were evacuate. And that area who were evacuate. And in recent days , as that is in recent days, as that is because of increased activity from the terror group hezbollah, which has been launching rocket artillery and missiles across the border, as well as small arms fire. There was an incident, according to the idf , incident, according to the idf, overnight, in which Israeli Forces struck hezbollah militants who were planning to set off missiles towards communities tis in northern israel , but they were, according israel, but they were, according to the idf , taken out and what to the idf, taken out and what of the aid convoys that we saw beginning yesterday crossing the rafah border from egypt . Rafah border from egypt . I mean, United Nations is saying, you know, thats just 20 trucks. Its nothing. Its trucks. Its nothing. Its a drop in the ocean. Is there any sign that there may be more today . Today . Well, youre right. It today . Well, youre right. It is a trickle in terms of what we would normally see on any given day when were not in a conflict with about 500 trucks that would normally cross the rafah crossing from egypt into to gaza andits crossing from egypt into to gaza and its hoped, the united nafions and its hoped, the United Nations say , that the number of nations say, that the number of trucks that cross over today can increase on the 20 odd that came yesterday and maybe 30 odd crossing today. But of course it crossing today. But of course it has to get pre approved all from both the egyptians and the israelis. The israelis are very concerned about the potential for some of those supplies falling into the hands of hamas. And thats why even though they are absolutely required in gaza , are absolutely required in gaza, fuel trucks are not yet coming in, because the israelis have not been given any kind of assurance. There are no plans in place to ensure that the fuel trucks are not going to be commandeered by hamas. So it is, commandeered by hamas. So it is, of course , the gaza gaza strip of course, the gaza gaza strip area controlled by hamas. Area controlled by hamas. Anything entering the gaza strip potentially , of course, is at potentially, of course, is at risk of being commandeered by hamas. Okay , mark, for now, thanks okay, mark, for now, thanks very much indeed. Yeah very much indeed. Yeah meanwhile, things are moving on the political front back here because rishi sunak is, of course, going to mark his first yearin course, going to mark his first year in number 10 on wednesday. But hes got lots of problems at home and abroad. Its been reported in the mail on sunday that 25 mps could be set to hand in letters of no confidence after the loss of two by elections on thursday. Theyve not been able to do that. I cant do it yet until that. I cant do it yet until that First Anniversary has been reached out. And then theres the channel migrant crisis and the war in ukraine and the middle east. Theyve actually added to his woes to. Lets talk to head to farnborough, i should say, and talk to our political correspondent, olivia utley. Morning, olivia. I mean , its morning, olivia. I mean, its problematic. Are these just the problematic. Are these just the usual suspects, though . Well usual suspects, though . Well after those two crushing by election losses , i mean by election losses, i mean almost unprecedented by election losses in mid bedfordshire and tamworth in bedfordshire , labour tamworth in bedfordshire, labour turned over the tories biggest ever numerical majority. Ever numerical majority. That was nearly 25,000. And in tamworth it was the tories second biggest by election defeat since the second world war. So its perhaps unsurprising that there are those in the conservative party who are getting itchy feet and think that now is the moment to get rid of the Prime Minister and another roll of the and have another roll of the dice. But as you say, stephen, it does seem to be the usual suspect effects. Theres 20 to 25 mp5 suspect effects. Theres 20 to 25 mps who are thought to be either already sent in letters or on the brink of sending in letters. Theyre mostly from either the very sort of moderate left wing of the party, if you like, or really loyal. Boris johnson ites the numbers arent actually a threat to rishi sunak. 15 of the conservative parliamentary would need to submit a vote of no confidence in rishi sunak for it to even go to a vote and 20 to 25 is more like 5 to 7. So that need the rebels would need to double their numbers if they were actually going to cause sunak any threat. But of course its very uncomfortable for the Prime Minister. As you said in your introduction , there he is introduction, there he is fighting different on fighting different battles on all fronts at the all sorts of fronts at the moment. The last thing he moment. And the last thing he needs for the conservative needs is for the conservative party to agitating get rid party to be agitating to get rid of him. What the Prime Minister of him. What the Prime Minister will clinging on to this will be clinging on to this morning is that although those by election last week by election defeats last week make look as labour is make it look as though labour is now course to win a definite now on course to win a definite outright majority , see the outright majority, see the trends dont suggest that. So the polls at the moment show that keir starmer is sort of 25 points ahead at this point before the 1997 election when blair swept to victory, he was getting sort of 50 Approval Ratings in the polls. And on the ratings in the polls. And on the night he only won by 31 points. So as things stand, it looks like keir starmer , according to like keir starmer, according to the polls, not the by elections. According to the polls, it looks like hes on course to get to a narrow victory. A small narrow victory. A small majority. Now rishi sunak is just desperately hoping that that support for keir starmer is miles wide but inches deep and can be broken down before the next election. Whenever thatll be. But what sort of effect could the reform party have on both parties . Actually, when they are planning to go fonnard to a general election . General election . Yeah, its a really interesting question because the reform party are the sort of right wing challenger to the conservative party, if you like , conservative party, if you like, in both those by elections as it got more votes than the labour majority. So it only got sort of just over a thousand, nearly 2000 votes in tamworth and mid bedfordshire, but those were enough to lose the conservative party, those seats. So of course the worry for rishi sunak is that if that pattern is replicated across the country, the conservatives could end up losing seats to labour because the right wing vote has been split between the conservatives and reform. So that poses a real challenge to rishi sunak. Or challenge to rishi sunak. Or does he try and get the reform minded conservative voters and mps on side by sort of tacking to the right in policy terms . Or does he do what keir starmer is doing and try and nick the Centre Ground . Just a quick word on the home secretary. Shes used some secretary. Shes used some pretty inflammatory language, hasnt she, when it comes to the illegal migrants. But theres a poll out this morning saying a lot of people agree with her. Well, this is the thing. I mean, when we have any policy on illegal migration, Suella Braverman often uses as you say, very inflammatory language on social media. She gets pilliod for that. Time and time for that. But time and time again, we see in the polls that actually the public is behind on stricter rules surrounding ending migration. This is an area where the conservatives really do think that they have the upper ground on labour, whereas labour can win now on the nhs, on the economy, on housing, all of these issues which were which were previously sort of tory strongholds on migration keir starmer are still sounding a little bit wobbly and this is where Suella Braverman and rishi sunak really think they can start to win back some of that lost public appeal. Of that lost public appeal. Okay, olivia, for now , thanks okay, olivia, for now, thanks very much indeed. Oh olivia, get olivia. I forgot to ask what youre doing in farnborough. Youre doing in farnborough. Oh, yeah, i am in farnborough for the Peoples Panel for Camilla Tominey show which will be at 930 today. Ill be to talking farnborough residents about what they think of the issues of the week, the political issues of the week. And ill give them their chance to ask questions to the politicians who camilla will be interviewing. Lovely. Well see you later on then. Very much indeed. Great. From politics great. And from politics onto something seriously Something Else thats seriously affecting peoples lives at the moment. Thats storm babet moment. And thats storm babet it may have passed, but its left devastation in its wake, killing at least four people north sea workers had to be airlifted off an oil rig after some anchors came loose. That must have been terrifying, frankly. And flooding across a vast area of the uk is going to take weeks to sort out. Not only that, but travel disruption will continue. Kings cross station in london was forced to shut yesterday due to overcrowding being caused by other problems, and there are doubts about many lines this morning. In lets lines this morning. In lets head to derby our West Midlands reporter jack carson is there. Even though derby is in the east midlands, we should we should point out, shouldnt we, jack . But what is that . That jack . But what is that . That lovely new river youre standing by . Well yeah. Let me just move out of the way for a second, because i shouldnt really be able to stand here. This is one of the major road arteries in and out of derby. Its the a52 goes all the way to nottingham. And as you can see here, this underpass under bridge is completely under this bridge is completely flooded. River dennent is flooded. The river dennent is about 100m in front of me. That rose to its highest ever level yesterday , say 3. 5m tall and yesterday, say 3. 5m tall and Derby City Council say that this city has never seen water levels in the city that high before. It in the city that high before. It means that theres some serious road disruption here in the city with particularly obviously here on the a52. There have been some on the a52. There have been some cars that have attempted to drive down here but seen the water and very quickly turn around and much of the cleanup is also start begun. Of is also start and also begun. Of course, its not just this area of the city. Theres three severe flood warnings around derby. Council have derby. The city council have evacuated. Some people are starting to clear up, particularly, of course, with debns particularly, of course, with debris around me here where im stood on this section of the a52. Branches, a52. Theres tree branches, theres plastic all over the road. So thats all part of the cleanup operation thats going to have to take over the to have to take place over the next hours to this major next few hours to get this major road clear. But of road network clear. But of course, not just here course, its not just here in derby, elsewhere in the midlands, serious midlands, there is serious disruption in nottinghamshire. Yesterday declared Major Incidents because of flooding. There there are, of course, flood warnings in place for parts of the river trent, as well as levels are expected to rise, possibly a further 18in over the next 24 to 36 hours. The good news for the people here in derby is that there was very little rainfall overnight. And so water levels, particularly on the dennent , particularly on the dennent, have seemed to be settling. But have seemed to be settling. But there is concern that the water coming down from the upper dennent still going to dennent is also still going to cause disruption here. For the following a few days and into next week. Okay jack, thanks next week. Okay jack, thanks very much indeed. Very much indeed. I was wondering, for those of you who are listening on the radio, actually Jack Standing there on what should be a road, i mean, as he said, he shouldnt be there normally be able to stand there normally a carriageway. Yeah, big a dual carriageway. Yeah, big dual carriageway but it looks like the moment and like a river at the moment and obviously been closed at obviously its been closed at the moment because it is undrivable. Does bad undrivable. But it does look bad really anyway , should we really bad anyway, should we find out why and whats happening and when, whether it really is over . Lets talk to weather expert john hammond, who joins now. Good morning, joins us now. Good morning, john. All right. Thats the main question. Is it really over . It is really over. It is really over. It is really over. Yeah, its a good news story, as you saw there with jack, the sun was out. Yeah, the water was very high, but the sun was out and the sun is out across just about the whole of the uk. Theres the odd shower around, but are basically to but we are basically back to normal blown itself out normal by batus blown itself out and normal service resumes, and yes, normal service resumes, at for the time being. So at least for the time being. So today will be a clearing up day for much of the country. Those for much of the country. Those areas flood stricken. But of areas flood stricken. But of course river levels are very high still. As jack said, the dennent is extraordinarily high and that bulge of floodwater has got to work its way down through the trent. So through the trent for example, and other larger catchments across northern and eastern britain, that bulge of floodwater has got to work its way down towards the sea. So Environment Agency , the flood Environment Agency, the flood warnings are still extensive and for some stretches we have a severe flood warning. But in terms of whats coming out of the sky, were in a little window of clearer weather just now. But it is only a little window because the weather charts indicate that through this week , low pressure is going this week, low pressure is going to start to drag in more moisture. And that means more rainfall, not the extreme rainfall, not the extreme rainfall which we saw with babette. But that said , given babette. But that said, given that the ground is so saturated and the rivers are now very high, any extra rainfall will be unwelcome , impossible at this unwelcome, impossible at this stage to nail down exactly where the worst of the wind and the rain will be later on this week. But certainly from midweek onwards, it doesnt look pretty weather wise. And what we really weather wise. And what we really want is a week or two of dry, settled, crisp autumn weather. That not what were going to that is not what were going to get. Were getting a lot more rain now. Some places have already had wettest already had their wettest october record and were only october on record and were only two thirds of the way through the month. So its not looking particularly comfy able for those in the Environment Agency , those in the Environment Agency, those in the Environment Agency, those in the met office who will be monitoring the weather charts very closely over the next few days to see if were going to see another flooding event later on week and into next on this week and into next weekend. To watch, but weekend. Its one to watch, but at stage, and must stress at this stage, and i must stress at this stage, and i must stress at this stage , it doesnt look at this stage, it doesnt look like were going see anything like were going to see anything quite severe as the scenes quite as severe as the scenes were seeing right now on your television screen, both in terms of wind and rainfall. Its of wind and rainfall. All its kind little bit more back kind of a little bit more back to normal standard autumn weather opposed to the weather as opposed to the extreme weather weve seen over the last 48 hours. And were seeing some really dire , aerial pictures dire pictures, aerial pictures of the country looking absolutely sodden and i must say, when weve spoken to you before about the weather, youve been out in the garden with a blue sky behind you. Clearly not on today. Youre indoors. On today. Youre indoors. Well, to be honest, dan, when i first hooked into you , it was i first hooked into you, it was still pretty dark outside. So i thought id better stay inside for just lighting purposes. Its forjust lighting purposes. Its lovely and sunny outside, so maybe really in the garden, actually. Yeah. And actually across most parts of the country, its day to out country, its the day to get out in the and do those in the garden and do those autumn its a lovely day autumn jobs. Its a lovely day out there. Crisp dry. Out there. Crisp but dry. Okay, well, lets make the most it, i think, today. Most of it, i think, today. Got a day to do well, weve got a day to do it. John, good to see you. Thanks very much indeed. I must those aerial i must say, those aerial photographs again, if youre listening you listening on the radio, you wont seen them. Wont have actually seen them. But just its just but you just imagine its just these lovely, know, aerial these lovely, you know, aerial drone i suppose, of our drone footage, i suppose, of our beautiful countryside, but looking brown and looking absolutely brown and completely sodden. Completely sodden. Ill tell you what scares me, although its the rigs , the oil although its the rigs, the oil rigs now theyve got theyve evacuated people. Theyve got evacuated people. Theyve got them off. Its all safe and theyre used to pretty harsh stuff out there. But the anchor coming loose on whichever rig i dont know if its this particular rig but on one rig the anchor came loose. And obviously so the start to obviously so the rigs start to float off. It cant be easy. But it cant be easy. Evacuated in what like evacuated in what looks like quite stormy waters. No, no. To get the no, no, no. To get the choppers down on that. But it must be its i mean, its just its just evacuate by air, dont you . By air . Yeah. Do it by sea. No, no. Do it by sea. No, no. But its the stuff of nightmares. That, to me, means being on an oil rig like that thats lost its anchor. And thats why riggers are paid a fortune. Is that true . I dont know. Thats what they say. You sort of. Say. Is it . You sort of. Is it 2 2 weeks on, two weeks off or Something Like that . Dangerous world, i think. Wouldnt fancy if you are wouldnt fancy it if you are if you might be watching on if you you might be watching on a somewhere. A rig somewhere. What its like. Tell us what its like. Tell us what its like. Snow plumbing gbviews gbnews. Com please. We love up next, its 831. Should we go through all the sports news for you this morning . Theres a lot to crack on with with aidan magee. Good morning. Good morning to you. Well, we start with and i know ive said every hour, ive said this every hour, england versus south africa in the cup. And i sort of the world cup. And i sort of i mean, i just think england did i think its a success even though we didnt win. Yeah. Compared to what we were expecting. It was phenomenal. Without doubt. Look, theres always going to be disappointment you perform disappointment when you perform that well you your game that well and you get your game strategy right and strategy exactly right and you get substitutions right and get your substitutions right and some your key performers some of your key performers really to the party and you really come to the party and you lead until three minutes to go against really calibre against some really high calibre opposition could well win opposition who could well win the fourth time the trophy for a fourth time next so theres always next week. So theres always going be a little bit of going to be a little bit of disappointment there. You disappointment there. But you have at what england have to look at what england accomplished this time yesterday. How yesterday. I was wondering how good were good england actually were because played because they not really played anybody of any note. Yeah, theyve some notable theyve had some notable performances there. But performances here and there. But yesterday a brilliant performance from freddie steward at 22 years old. Hes at full back, 22 years old. Hes somebody the next somebody you can build the next campaign owen farrell campaign around. Owen farrell being because his being criticised because of his suspension the suspension at the start of the tournament. Again, was very, tournament. Again, he was very, very, night. Very, very good last night. So england of turning england have a habit of turning up the big event irrespective up to the big event irrespective of performing. They of how theyre performing. They did two thousand and did this in two thousand and seven and they almost got over the line last night. But once again, as it in two again, just as it was in two thousand and seven, it was south africa for england in africa who did for england in the but as i say, steve the end. But as i say, Steve Borthwick had a torrid time in charge. Over last charge. He took over last december, been in december, not even been in charge for a year. Not the best preparation, beset with problems. Everyone wondering how good actually problems. Everyone wondering how good but actually problems. Everyone wondering how good but know actually problems. Everyone wondering how good but know what . Ually problems. Everyone wondering how good but know what . Inlly problems. Everyone wondering how good but know what . In the were. But you know what . In the tournament only tournament you can only beat whats front you. And they whats in front of you. And they won five in a row and they put up a really good fight last night. You keep saying that. And i dont know you mean by it. You keep saying that. And i don can ow you mean by it. You keep saying that. And i don can only you mean by it. You keep saying that. And i don can only beatou mean by it. You keep saying that. And i don can only beat whats1n by it. You keep saying that. And i don can only beat whats in by it. You can only beat whats in front of you. Well, okay, we can say we can say won five games say theyve won five games and its for sit here in its easy for me to sit here in a warm studio, very warm studio, and say, okay, theyve won five in row against nobody against and say, okay, theyve won five in roofagainst nobody against and say, okay, theyve won five in ro ofagairnote, body against and say, okay, theyve won five in ro ofagair note, bodj its ainst and say, okay, theyve won five in ro ofagairnote, bodjits nott teams of any note, but its not their who drawn their fault who theyre drawn against. Beat against. You can only beat whats of it does whats in front of you. It does not. Therefore they werent drawn i, c or ireland. Yes. But you know, dont ah, yes. But you know, dont you yourself you dont criticise yourself because was because what you did say was youve talked about the momentum all through and youve youve talked about the momentum all right through and youve youve talked about the momentum all right withwugh and youve youve talked about the momentum all right withwugh awell, uve been right with that. Well, i think, you five think, you know, if you win five in anything, youre in a row of anything, youre going a big going to go into a big match with good about yourself. I would have thought. And it did and i thought did feel good. And i thought they i they took an early lead and i thought, wow, could got to thought, wow, they could got to half they could half time. I thought they could do i think do this. But i just think something really something when its a really world opposition, they world class opposition, they find a way and thats world class opposition, they find a what and thats world class opposition, they find a what south and thats world class opposition, they find a what south \nd th. Did exactly what south africa did last exactly what south africa did lasiyeah. Manu, one last yeah. And manu, one last night, nice yeah. And manu, one last nighiyou nice yeah. And manu, one last nighiyou know, nice yeah. And manu, one last nighiyou know, its nice nice yeah. And manu, one last nighiyou know, its nice fore way, you know, its nice for them because obviously Bobby Charlton, they did well. Mean, been around i mean, ive been in around football the premier i mean, ive been in around footballfor the premier i mean, ive been in around footballfor laste premier i mean, ive been in around footballfor laste piyears league for the last 20 years or so. Not just rustle so. Its not easy just to rustle together tributes, together these tributes, especially together these tributes, espec from together these tributes, especfrom home. So. So sheffield away from home. So. So Sheffield United would have had to cooperate with that. They got the they the screens up and running. They got got the got the wreaths, they got the black therell got the wreaths, they got the b|proper therell got the wreaths, they got the b|proper tribute therell got the wreaths, they got the b|proper tribute on therell got the wreaths, they got the b|proper tribute on tuesdayl a proper tribute on tuesday night when united get back to old trafford. But its important to bobby to acknowledge sir Bobby Charltons the charltons contribution to the modern united, influence he modern united, the influence he had on Alex Ferguson when he first he engendered the loyalty he engendered in the boardroom. And he needed a sympathetic boardroom. And he needed a sympatigoing and werent going well. And of course had course the influence he had over David Beckham, who produced a tribute he tribute this morning saying he was and was a hero to everybody and everybodys well. So many stories , so many lovely stories, gillian bobby at a gillian says. I met bobby at a work conference. He was one of the speakers the event. I was the speakers at the event. I was surprised him queuing for surprised to see him queuing for lunch the rest of us. Lunch with the rest of us. Everybody else just acting normally. For a while normally. We chatted for a while and he was very nice, very pleasant ordinary. Pleasant and just ordinary. No airs or graces. Met him in 2012. Yeah, we i met him in 2012. Yeah, we didnt talk much about football outside interview. He we outside of the interview. He we are. We living in are. We were both living in cheshire at time he cheshire at the time because he was the momentum was part of the whole momentum of olympics in 2012. Of getting the olympics in 2012. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And he was talking about extolling the virtues it was virtues of london. It was a fantastic mean, fantastic ambassador. I mean, wed games by, wed already won the games by, by the right them. By then the right to host them. But was about theres but by 2012 it was about theres a negativity those a bit of negativity around those games. There was a bit games. Remember there was a bit of know, time, is it of you know, at the time, is it going going to is going to is it going to pay . Is it going to people are going to turn in turn up. But bringing in somebody like bobby, Bobby Charlton, sorry to guarantees a certain. Very certain. Yeah, he spoke very well he got a support well and he got a lot of support a of support us. A lot of support around us. Pete and Brierley Hill says sir now theres sir Bobby Charlton. Now theres a we will a role model the like we will never have again. And thats interesting because he was, you know, he hugely successful, actually, hugely influential, but not flashy. He not modest, but not flashy. He not modest, you might say. Yeah. If you look at all those years he spent as a director of Manchester United, a journalist like towards sir like me would be led towards sir bobby comment. Come Bobby Charlton for comment. Come on, what think about the on, what do you think about the team . Think about team . What do you think about fergie . What do you about fergie . What do you think about their performance in europe . He never. He never commented publicly. He unless the unless he was supporting the club and was a director in club and he was a director in the in the Old Fashioned sense, seen and not heard. Its not seen and not heard. And its not for easy sir bobby robson, sir bobby robson. Bobby robson. Theyre legends. Lots of theyre both legends. Lots of bobbys about. There indeed. There are. There are indeed. There are. There its easy for there are. But its easy for some. Its not easy for someone like charlton to like sir Bobby Charlton to be seen heard because seen and not heard because hes so look at his so famous. But look at his accomplishments. 1958, he was seriously in that plane seriously injured in that plane crash. Recover ten years crash. And to recover ten years later win the european cup. The only english player, i believe, to the european and the to win the european cup and the world while world cup. And itll be a while before someone gets on that level. If ever is it the end level. Oh if ever is it the end of an era or nearly . Of an era or nearly . Because weve got sir because weve still got sir geoff whos last geoff hurst, whos the last surviving no. 1966 world cup winner, but people are saying its the end of an era and i think, david, there are some really good footballers around who do behave themselves, who are role models, but are they the same . The same . Well, its funny. I remember when back. When sir bobby moore died back. In 1993 and i was only a kid and in 1993 and i was only a kid and i went to millwall, the following day and i spoke the following day and i spoke to the chairman, burr, chairman, a guy called reg burr, not but he was not a famous man, but he was well known in football. And he not a famous man, but he was well he own in football. And he not a famous man, but he was well he own itoootball. And he not a famous man, but he was well he own ito ootb aiden,d he said he said to me, aiden, i feel lost a link to feel like weve lost a link to a better era. I didnt really understand what he at understand what he meant at the time, years i can time, but 30 years on, i can kind it sounds more kind of see it. It sounds more poignant years later. Poignant all these years later. Yeah. You yeah. And bobby, as you say, only one the 66 only one, only one of the 66 squad they should be squad left. And they should be held at the top held it right up at the very top because years because weve seen in the years since hard it is since just how hard it is to produce accomplishment. Produce that accomplishment. Aiden thank you very much indeed. Right weve got the headune indeed. Right weve got the headline makers heading your way in just a moment, so well see you then. 841 morning. Lets have a look at some of the headlines this morning with the writer and columnist emma woolf and the editor of spike, tom slater. Good morning to you both. Good morning. Oh hardly dare look at this, emma, in the sunday times, hs2, more controversy , more controversy. So this is the beleaguered rail kind of mega project, which rishi sunak spectacularly axed a few weeks back. It feels like a lifetime. Yeah. Spectacularly axed in in manchester at his party conference. I think it was a couple of weeks ago. And the sunday times investigation is really interesting. Its all about how hs2 bosses, the company hs2, limited , company hs2, limited, deliberately covered up costs. I deliberately covered up costs. I mean, we know the costs went spiralling. You know, billions and billions. I think it up and billions. I think it was up to nearly billion the end to nearly 90 billion by the end of know , from a from of it. You know, from a from a starting of of 20 starting point of sort of 20 or 30. Just were inflating 30. But they just were inflating and absolutely spiralling out of control. But now whistleblowers have been talking about how they used the classic playbook. They would underestimate costs. They would underestimate costs. They would underestimate costs. They would say they would wait until bits the were bits of the project were approved. Managers. Approved. This is the managers. They would until bits of they would wait until bits of the approved and the project were approved and then im sorry then would say, oh, im so sorry that the cost run you that the cost has run over. You know, cost gone over that the cost has run over. You knc of cost gone over that the cost has run over. You knc of whistleblowers over all of the whistleblowers involved in the investigation were got rid of and is were quickly got rid of and is that not fraud . Well , is it not fraud that not fraud . Well, is it not fraud or is there a loophole . I dont know the legal term. I dont know the legal term. Im sure there are ways that these big, big Infrastructure Projects can claim costs projects can claim that costs have delaying information, delaying information. I mean, the investigation has seized lots of private emails, letters , lots of private emails, letters, correspondence, phone calls. Theyve got a lot of a lot of information theyre going information which theyre going to looking into. But itjust to be looking into. But itjust shows you how these huge projects can go out of control, completely out of control. Completely out of control. It does make you wonder, because every time is because every time there is a big this, you know, big project like this, you know, whatever is they always end whatever it is they always end up running over time and way over budget, way over budget. Should so somebody should be watching had since its but theyve had since its sorry, tom, but theyve had since started theyve since it started, theyve had four chief executives seven four chief executives and seven chairmen in the past. Chairmen in in the past. The last Financial Year , in the last Financial Year, chief paid huge chief executive was paid huge sums money. Theyve had so sums of money. Theyve had so many different charge. Many different people in charge. I was started i mean, this project was started by , the then labour by lord adonis, the then labour transport secretary. So you think how many its gone think how many people its gone through complete. And thats a terrible situation for accountability in that in given the kind of churn that in given the kind of churn that weve been seeing, only that weve been seeing, not only in corporate in terms of the Corporate Structure also structure of it, but also politically, also just the politically, but also just the in the expense of just in terms of the expense of just going through the motions of all of planning of this, the planning procedures, environmental procedures, the Environmental Impact assessments, all these impact assessments, all of these different which is great Different Things which is great for and various people for lawyers and various people involved in different parts of the food chain of this particular project. But it doesnt doesnt to doesnt really doesnt have to be this. Compare it to be like this. You compare it to how managed how rail projects are managed even in places like france or spain whatever. Is spain or whatever. Germany is nowhere near as expensive or timely to run timely or time consuming to run these things. So weve really got address whats gone wrong got to address whats gone wrong here, only terms here, not only in terms of the kind Corporate Structure kind of Corporate Structure and accountability, kind of Corporate Structure and accotittability, kind of Corporate Structure and accot it take ty, kind of Corporate Structure and accotit takety, long costs does it take so long and costs so much money. Its interesting that well, its interesting that the decided to the sunday times have decided to launch an investigation themselves. Is there any sort of themselves. Is there any sort of government investigation going on its so overbudget on as to why its so overbudget and now quietly its over budget to the point that they really sort of almost had to abandon it and are promising that money to go to Northern Rail instead. But stephen, you mentioned was it fraud or not . Well, this one of whistleblower, one of the whistleblower, creswell, whos been launching an dismissal claim , he an unfair dismissal claim, he is saying he says saying hes alleging he says a criminal offence has been committed , namely fraud. So committed, namely fraud. So there claiming that there are people claiming that this is fraud, right . Yeah oh, well, well have to see if gets in. If that gets in. Investigated doesnt investigated further. Doesnt give of give you an awful lot of confidence future schemes confidence in the future schemes , does it . No it doesnt. No. No it doesnt. Interesting the interesting tom, in the observer, picked observer, youve youve picked a story tories despair at story about tories despair at the of their their recent the scale of their their recent defeats. And it struck me as apt defeats. And it struck me as apt because as john has been in touch , who says hi , john. Its touch, who says hi, john. Its amusing to see political commentators and journalists getting all excited by two by election results. Labour by election results. Labour didnt increase their vote very much, simply conservative voters not turning out. But in the current context, that could be enough to do it for them because hes hes exactly right. Insofar as the fascinating about this fascinating thing about this potential landslide that people are talking about in the next election. All, its election. First of all, its easy guess these easy to second guess these things. Things things. This far out things are very volatile. Knows . But if very volatile. Who knows . But if that place, it will be that does take place, it will be a landslide, which is kind of built apathy. If that makes built on apathy. If that makes any sense. Because if you any sense. Yeah, because if you look at polls, no one is look at the polls, no one is particularly enthusiastic for keir starmer. No one really knows stands for. What knows what he stands for. What has decisive is the has been decisive is the collapse in the tory votes and the demoralisation of a lot of people who voted for the tory party, particularly in 2019 party, particularly in the 2019 election. If you think about those kind working class those kind of working class voters who really put the tories over many over the top in so many constituencies around, constituencies last time around, theyre not flooding back to labour slice of labour a very small slice of them are and the rest of them are go split apart to are tending to go split apart to other parties back to not other parties or go back to not voting, really whats voting, which is really whats taking this taking place. So there is this we could a very we could end up in a very fascinating situation where you could you could up could you could easily end up with kind of with a 1997 style kind of landslide , but it would be one landslide, but it would be one that large part on that was built in large part on the of the other side. The apathy of the other side. And the party vote and how much the tory party vote kind collapsed. Kind of collapsed. Its fair to i dont think its fair to call it apathy. So many tory voters dont want to, you know, want to use their vote and dont know where put it. Know where to put it. Will go reform know where to put it. Reclaim will go reform know where to put it. Reclaim whatever. Go reform know where to put it. Reclaim whatever. Yeah, reform know where to put it. Reclaim whatever. Yeah, butm to reclaim whatever. Yeah, but a lot people genuinely cant lot of people genuinely cant bnng lot of people genuinely cant bring themselves to vote. I know so conservative voters so many conservative voters who cant vote cant bring themselves to vote for there for labour, although there isnt that nowadays that much difference nowadays between parties. Or between the two parties. Or there might be. Ultimately , yeah, i i think ultimately, yeah, i suppose lots of economic policies. That just sounds like policies. Thatjust sounds like a lot that just sounds like a lot of the similar things theyre saying. But i of the similar things theyre saying. Buti dont of the similar things theyre saying. But i dont think apathy of the similar things theyre safair|. But i dont think apathy of the similar things theyre safair on ut i dont think apathy of the similar things theyre safair on people|t think apathy of the similar things theyre safair on people|t thigenuinely is fair on people who genuinely dont know where because dont know where to vote because the conservative party want the conservative party they want to longer conservative. Blame them for it whatsoever. I think its true. I think its true. Its an entirely kind of rational to whats rational response to whats taking really taking place. But what really upsets me this is the fact upsets me about this is the fact that the great thing about brexit, aside from the result of it, is there was a whole kind of cohort of people who hadnt voted for very time voted for a very long time or had in some had never voted at all. In some instances who saw within an instances who saw within that an opportunity voices opportunity to have their voices heard. Became catering opportunity to have their voices hethose became catering opportunity to have their voices hethose voters, e catering opportunity to have their voices hethose voters, sort catering opportunity to have their voices hethose voters, sort of catering opportunity to have their voices hethose voters, sort of working; to those voters, sort of working class voters who were just banked labour party and banked by the labour party and therefore ignored, you know, all of the ideas that you could put a on a donkey and theyd a rosette on a donkey and theyd still vote all those still vote for it. All of those kind slurs had kind of smears and slurs had to go voters be go away. These voters had to be taken now a lot of taken seriously. Now a lot of those voters feel like theyve got nowhere to go other than back not and a back to not voting. And thats a very tragic state of affairs, but entirely rational but its an entirely rational response to a tory cause. Theyve been they dont feel theyve been listened squandered they dont feel theyve been lisbecause squandered they dont feel theyve been lisbecause voteindered they dont feel theyve been lisbecause vote lasted it because the tory vote last time , they were very smart it because the tory vote last tinsaying, they were very smart it because the tory vote last tinsaying, youve were very smart it because the tory vote last tinsaying, youve lente very smart it because the tory vote last tinsaying, youve lent us ary smart it because the tory vote last tinsaying, youve lent us yournart in saying, youve lent us your vote now we have to earn it. Vote and now we have to earn it. Earn it . Exactly. And that definitely taken place. Definitely havent taken place. No havent. No they havent. But landscapes everything but landscapes changed so fundamentally since bofis changed so fundamentally since Boris Johnson said lent Boris Johnson said youve lent us thank you very us your vote. Thank you very much. But 18 Prime Ministers ago, it yes, told dont stop it yes, yes. Told dont stop it now, emma. Now, emma. Whats this on the sun on sunday about amazon wrapping up. Yeah , i think its actually yeah, i think its actually quite an important story. Yeah, i think its actually quite an important story. You quite an important story. You know the amount of waste on amazon or deliveries. Amazon or other deliveries. Weve huge surge in the weve had a huge surge in the amount of deliveries. Everybodys got parcels waiting with and that with this neighbour and that neighbour always neighbour and theres always stuff , huge stuff being delivered, huge vans. See vans delivering vans. I see more vans delivering parcels than i do the sort of royal delivering letters. Royal mail delivering letters. Im afraid so. Im afraid so. But amount of waste is but the amount of waste is astonishing. You can order a small toy and youre still unpacking huge great big cardboard just so cardboard boxes and just so much, much packaged waste. Much, so much packaged waste. Now amazon are trying to cut down on this by using a new machine, which wraps up the goods. It sort of scans them and measures them and then it wraps them resistant them up in weather resistant papen them up in weather resistant paper. Just paper and it paper. So its just paper and it goes the round the item goes round the round the item andits goes round the round the item and its sort of sealed up like plastic, without glue. And plastic, but without glue. And then can i hope it can be then it can be i hope it can be cut off by the person at the other because getting into other end because getting into your other. Your packaging is the other. A its quite difficult, a nightmare i have nightmare thing, but i have noficed noticed a difference. I mean, im too im afraid i do far too much shopping by amazon and everything used to in big everything used to be in big cardboard boxes that you had hexen game trying to get rid of. But now ive noticed just recently in last couple of recently in the last couple of weeks, arriving in weeks, everythings arriving in these paper, cardboard, these bags paper, cardboard, envelope, paper bags. Yes. No, no, no, no. The actual bags. A strong paper bags. Like a strong paper bag. Yeah, exactly. And i think thats an improvement. This resistance improvement. And this resistance stuff, is fully recyclable stuff, which is fully recyclable , would be even better because stuff, which is fully recyclable , isoi td be even better because stuff, which is fully recyclable , isoi td i shrinki better because stuff, which is fully recyclable , isoi td i shrink wraps. Because stuff, which is fully recyclable , isoi td i shrink wraps. Yeah,|se it sort of shrink wraps. Yeah, thatd be great. Theres just no need for all of cardboard need for all of the cardboard boxes. Literally empty space. Thats. Yeah , i bought something the yeah, i bought something the other day and it came. It came in a bag. It was it came in a bag. It was cloth, it was microfiber cloth for the dog. Exciting. But it for the dog. Exciting. But it came a dog. But it was wrapped in three layers of plastic. Its in three layers of plastic. Its probably come from china. Inside a lovely cardboard, eco friendly envelope. Envelope. You think, oh, what was the point of that . Point of that . But interesting but its interesting that they yeah yeah. They are trying. Yeah yeah. Good. Well, thats good. Well, thats good. Of course. A good move of course. Of course. Of course. Because cardboard waste because the cardboard waste that house is that just comes from my house is ridiculous. You multiply that by several million and it must be creating a terrible problem somewhere. You can see the cardboard on outside house on google outside your house on google maps. Oh, its woman. Maps. Okay oh, its woman. Its a mountain of it to tom sunday mirror. Are you in . If we drop by . Are you in . If we drop by . Yes, just pick you up on your fondness , stephen, for sort of fondness, stephen, for sort of home surveillance and. Oh and doorbell cameras. Doorbell cameras. So theres a gentleman in leicestershire whos got got the alert on his phone that his doorbell, his ring whatever doorbell, his ring or whatever it gone off. And doorbell, his ring or whatever it looks gone off. And doorbell, his ring or whatever it looks at gone off. And doorbell, his ring or whatever it looks at it gone off. And doorbell, his ring or whatever it looks at it and one off. And doorbell, his ring or whatever it looks at it and theres and he looks at it and theres a flock front flock of sheep in his front garden. He has no idea how they got there. And oh, got there. And then they, oh, did they ring doorbell . Did they ring the doorbell . Well, they well, im not sure if they managed doorbell. Managed to ring the doorbell. They set off some sort of sensor at knows. But at least, but who knows. But yes, do yes, imagine turning on. What do you apparently the you do about it . Apparently the farmers eventually turned up to retrieve yes. Farmers eventually turned up to retroh, yes. Farmers eventually turned up to retroh, isnt yes. Farmers eventually turned up to retroh, isnt fantastic . Oh, isnt that fantastic . Oh, isnt that fantastic . Surprise on your a little surprise on your app. That sounds quite amusing. App. That sounds quite amusing. Oh, thats great. I love that. Id love a load of sheep to turn my front door. Turn up at my front door. I still think its problem i still think its a problem if youre away and youve suddenly. And what suddenly been alerted. And what do you do . What meant to do what are you meant to do about what are you meant to do abowell, its all about well, its all about the whole people whole thing. Very odd if people seeing doorbell seeing whos at their doorbell and whos in there, whos walking i just and whos in there, whos walkithe i just and whos in there, whos walkithe whole i just and whos in there, whos walkithe whole surveillance. Ist hate the whole surveillance. Oh, idea filmed. Is idea of being filmed. Which is weird love doing tv. Weird because i love doing tv. But the idea of the idea of being your own home being filmed in your own home just makes feel creepy. All over. Oven i oven i locked it. I locked myself out of house couple of out of my house a couple of years ago, think and years ago, i think now. And i thought, oh well, at least my next door neighbour will probably be able to let me in because hes got a key. So i went his door and rang went to his front door and rang the doorbell and its one of those and i said, you those and i said, could you possibly let me in . Im so stupid. Ive locked myself out of id of my house. And he said, id love ann, im in love to help ann, but im in spain because you dont know. Spain because you dont know. You dont know where the people are, do you . Because they could you dont know where the people arewatching, because they could you dont know where the people arewatching, becausupstairs uld you dont know where the people arewatching, becaus upstairs in d be watching, hiding upstairs in the. The bedroom. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, thats the trouble. So what did she do by the way . Got another neighbour to i got another neighbour to leap over the fence and. And help find it another way. It was a long, convoluted thing, a very long, convoluted thing, and why is it and it was raining. Why is it always when lock always raining when you lock yourself your house . Yourself out of your house . Its often the worst. Its often the worst. Your car breaks. We or when your car breaks. We live it live in britain. Why is it always raining . Fair, youre more to be fair, youre more balanced. Youre balanced balanced. Youre more balanced than on them. Than i am on them. That theyve its usually that theyve gone Climate Change gone to a Climate Change conference guzzling , gas conference in a guzzling, gas guzzling jet. So they they theyve voila. So they they theyve just flown off on a private jet to their caribbean island last week. One day after attending a big summit in new york. All about Climate Change and how it affects particularly young childrens mental health. La la la la la. So the next day they boarded their private jet. Its called a falcon seven x, which guzzles a lot a lot of gas. But you know, 9. 6 tonnes of co2 emissions. They flew off to emissions. They flew off to their caribbean island. Then flew back and then took the jet on somewhere else. So people are saying, what . How saying, do you know what . How genuine these genuine are these eco credentials really . Because weve seen a lot of this private jet stuff arriving at these conferences. As you say, anne, on you know , on a private jet. You know, people arriving at davos to talk about when i said that, i thought i taking the mickey. Thought i was taking the mickey. And its fine if youre going to going to to do that, if youre going to be billionaire be a celebrity and a billionaire and whatever, and travel that way care about the way and you dont care about the planet, lecture planet, fine. But dont lecture other people about it. Preaching its the preaching of oz saying on your holiday saying dont go on your holiday to yew or holiday to spain. Exactly. You would think they would okay, would even just think, okay, were going to this climate conference. That was that prince that was one that prince harry for. Was harry got caught out for. He was giving of beachside giving some sort of beachside speech he speech in in his bare foot. He got private jet there and got a private jet there and back. And you think to yourself, there a level there would at least be a level of self awareness. This of self awareness. Think this might not look good . Yes. Occur to them. Not at all. Not at all. Surely not. Surely not. Again, its one rule but again, its that one rule for them. Rule everyone for them. One rule for everyone else. About else. But if you think about when were cop26, i forget the statistics, number of statistics, but the number of private jets that Glasgow Airport having to ready airport was having to ready space of thats just space for because of thats just how the kind of global super elite roll even when theyre going to lecture everyone else about Climate Change. Mean about Climate Change. I mean im not not a with other im not on a plane with other people. Would get people. Like, why would you get on regular itd be on a regular plane . Itd be awful. Awful. Yeah, well, exactly , exactly. Yeah, well, exactly, exactly. And im no fan of Greta Thunberg in a way, because again , i just in a way, because again, i just dont like being preached at. But at least when she went to the un, she did actually go there by boat. Yeah she did. It didnt take long. Yeah, she was all around the world. Youve got to give her credit for that. I just wish shed stop yelling at me , you know . Yelling at me, you know . I dont think its personal. I dont think its personal. No, its probably. No, its probably. Child is telling its when a child is telling you youre destroying you that youre destroying the whole planet and you think, okay, lot okay, theres quite a lot of history we just sit history here. Can we just sit down this down and discuss this rationally . Would rationally . Yes that would be nice. Destroying future. w future. Good to see you emma. And so the tributes flooding in frankly for sir Bobby Charlton from the great and the good and from the rest of us as well. And the emphasis, it seems to be not just about what a fantastic player he was and what a great icon for football, but what a nice man he was. What a nice man he was. And if you met him, it absolutely made your day week , absolutely made your day week, month, probably life. I mean, month, probably life. I mean, dave says my father , my son and dave says my father, my son and myself had the honour of meeting Bobby Charlton in the directors box at old trafford in 1997. On the occasion of my fathers 80th birthday. I can only imagine to your whole family what a wonderful day that must have been. Sean says. I remember seeing the holy trinity best law and charlton when i was eight years old and i was just mesmerised. Old and i was just mesmerised. Six years later, i still get tingles down my spine when i think of it. A tingles down my spine when i think of it. A great man. Thanks for the memories. For the memories. I mean, i think whats so wonderful hes hero. Wonderful is hes such a hero. And to live up to that and then to live up to that heroic status , when you meet a heroic status, when you meet a fan , thats what matters. But fan, thats what matters. But just by being nice , actually, just by being nice, actually, rather than , you know, being a rather than, you know, being a lot of people forget very full of themselves and things dont they think theyre amazing. And i think if you hold somebody to that status , you sort of that hero status, you sort of you want to meet them and youre sort worried youll sort of worried that youll be disappointed and sound disappointed. And by the sound of did not disappoint at all. Well, he has been a great man with a great legacy, actually. But Ellie Costello looks back now at his life and his career. Now at his life and his career. The greatest moment in english football. Football. Sir Bobby Charlton following captain bobby moore to collect the 1966 world cup trophy from the 1966 world cup trophy from the queen at wembley. The the queen at wembley. The defining moment in the career of one of englands greatest footballers. Im a football romantic. I love football. And there are love football. And there are there are millions , millions there are millions, millions like me, to which this place is the focal point of the whole world. You know, you know, you speak to people like pele, you know , and beckenbauer and the know, and beckenbauer and the highlight of their careers was when they played at wembley for the born the son of the first time, born the son of a coal miner in northumberland in 1937, bobby said the only choices open to him were the mines. The navy or football. The navy or football. Thankfully for the world, he pursued the latter. Charlesons pursued the latter. Charlesons death leaves, sir geoff hurst as the only surviving member of the team that won the world cup. At team that won the world cup. At just 20 years old. A young Bobby Charlton was one of the busby babes involved in the 1958 munich air crash. He survived, munich air crash. He survived, although 23 lives were lost in including those of eight united team members up until his own death , he remained the last death, he remained the last surviving member of that crash aligncenter and Bobby Charlton slams the ball home. Bobby charlton was named in the england squad for four world cups at the time of his retirement from the england team in 1970. He was the nations most capped player, having turned out 106 times at the highest level with 249 goals. He was Manchester Uniteds highest, all time goal scorer for more than 40 years. He was also england. S highest goal scorer england. S highest goal scorer for 45 years in a glittering career, sir won bobby three League Championships and fa cup and a european cup with Manchester United. He remained a Manchester United. He remained a director at the club for many years. Years. Bobby charlton was the player who gave us that elite, world class quality, which enables you to go and win tournaments. And dont forget the soccer school. David beckham came effectively was brought to the attention often by his participation and involvement in the Bobby Charlton soccer schools. Charlton soccer schools. In 1994, charlton became sir bobby when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, and he continued to act as an ambassador for british sport. Im a footballer and didntjust im a footballer and didnt just tried my best and hoped that maybe ability was was good enough to get me some success, which ive been lucky enough to have done. He helped to promote londons successful bid for the 2012 olympics. This is such a fun place and people love london and people love london and we get them here and well give them such a fantastic time. Such a fantastic time. In his personal life, Bobby Charlton married his wife, norma ball, in 1961. They had two daughters, suzanne and andrea , daughters, suzanne and andrea, in november 2020, it was revealed that sir Bobby Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia as did several of his 1966 team mates. He stepped back from pubuc team mates. He stepped back from public life and has rarely been seen in recent years. Sir bobby seen in recent years. Sir Bobby Charlton will remain a name synonymous with the beautiful game. Game. Beautiful man, too. Were joined by former england goalkeeper now peter shilton, and a very good morning to you, peter. What are your thoughts on sir Bobby Charlton today . A good morning. Um, well , obviously very sad um, well, obviously very sad that bobbys passed away, but he was just a fantastic player. He was just a fantastic player. He was my hero. One of my heroes when i was growing up and i managed to play with him for england in 69. And, and obviously against him when i was 17. And he was such a fantastic player. You know, he he could he could do everything. Um, he could do everything. Um, he wasnt they say he couldnt head the ball and yet he scored a fantastic goal in the european cup final. So as a player, he cup final. So as a player, he was fantastic. And as a person, was fantastic. And as a person, i think Everybody Knows he was so to down earth and had time for anybody. So uh, yeah, its a great loss and i love the fact , great loss and i love the fact, peter, that, you know, he was an inspiration for you and then you played with him because , i mean, played with him because, i mean, it to me hes it would seem to me that hes been inspiration, not just been an inspiration, notjust for, for, for your generation , for, for, for your generation, but every sort of footballing crop after that. Up until now. Up until now. Yeah, well, he came from a different era, didnt he . I mean , they used to play in the streets. And when bobby was young, you know, they get a football and practise the football and practise in the streets. And i used to love streets. And i used to love talking football with bobby and actually as a goalkeeper , i said actually as a goalkeeper, i said to him, how do you manage to keep the ball so low from from distance , you know . And he said, distance, you know . And he said, well, i used to practise putting a line across a wall and i used to get sort of a distance and keep it below that line and then get a bit further back and bit get a bit further back and a bit further back until i managed to keep really low from about 30 keep it really low from about 30 yards. And of course some of the goals he scored were unbelievable. The ball kept low unbelievable. The ball kept low and rose especially. I and then rose especially. I think the memorable one was in the semi final against the world cup semi final against portugal. He was he always portugal. So he was he always wanted to talk football and sometimes i remember when we were in in mexico in 70 and he even wanted to go in goal sometimes , you know, and said, sometimes, you know, and said, come on, a few shots at me. I can play in goal as well, you know. So he was that enthusiastic about it. Yeah. I mean , im not very yeah. I mean, im not very good on my football statistics , good on my football statistics, but when you say, you say, but when you say, as you say, you against him at one you played against him at one point, you goal and were point, were you in goal and were you up against one his you ever up against one of his goals as yeah, i played i was 17 playing for leicester. Playing for leicester. Id just taken over from gordon banks and we played at old trafford and it was unbelievable for me because you had george best, obviously dennis law, you know, nobby stiles and obviously bobby and bobby hit a shot from the edge of the box and it was going across me and i thought, ive got and i just got to get this. And i just managed fingertip around managed to fingertip it around the post. And bobby was running across corner , and across to take the corner, and he me a little wry smile he gave me a little wry smile and saying, youre and a wink, as if saying, youre not do that against. Not allowed to do that against. And he actually he actually sort of remembered that moment when i was speaking to i said, bobby, do you remember that . And he went, i do , actually. Yeah. So went, i do, actually. Yeah. So he just so enthusiastic and, he was just so enthusiastic and, you know, he was he was just so down to earth. And i think not only because of his football achievements , but because of the achievements, but because of the person he was. Thats how people you know, around the around the world respected him. I, i do find it interesting that, you i, i do find it interesting that , you know, i, i do find it interesting that, you know, he and people like you, its a slightly older generation. If you forgive me for saying it. Peter who do seem to have kept their feet on the ground a bit more than perhaps some of the younger generation, which is actually really nice. I which is actually really nice. I mean, thats thats something to be admired. I would mean, thats thats something to be admired. I would i mean, thats thats something to be admired. I would i would be admired. I would i would think yeah. I think like i say, it was a different era. You know. So you different era. You know. So you were taught things there wasnt the money and you know, the, the quite the coverage i mean i think you should have match of the day that was the only program in those areas but program in in those areas but i mean now theyre theyre mean its now theyre theyre theyre superstars around you know well known and loads of money and not everybody i mean theres a lot of players these days who you know are very down to earth. But, you know , there to earth. But, you know, there are obviously 1 or 2 that hit the headlines. And yeah, im not going to knock people because its a different era and a lot more money. But it was certainly, you know, i mean, most of the 66 lads who won that trophy , i mean, they were all trophy, i mean, they were all good characters and had their own character but were down to earth and that says a lot, you know, for the winning winning team. They were. Team. They were. Yeah. Yeah. And were certainly not forgetting only one more forgetting them. Only one more left, but Bobby Charlton left, sadly. But Bobby Charlton certainly leaves a huge legacy, not just in the fact that we can still see him play now in in that footage. But the fact that he seems to have inspired so many other brilliant footballers. Shilton , its footballers. Peter shilton, its a pleasure. Thank you so much for joining us. I forjoining us. I love the all seem whos talked to a fair few legends this morning. Actually in their own right and theyve all been really nice, down to earth solid people and he rattled off some amazing names there. Yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Was holy trinity. Plus it was a holy trinity. Plus nobby stiles. Yeah. Holy trinity nobby stiles. Yeah. Holy trinity plus one. Oh, dear. All right, lets turn our attention to the middle east. Should we . On israels southwestern border, a barrage of rockets has been fired towards richard lezion. Its on the southern outskirts of tel aviv and on the northern border. Israeli officials have ordered the evacuation of a further 14 communities along israels northern border with lebanon. Meanwhile , while 28 trucks meanwhile, while 28 trucks were able to cross into the across the rafah border , thats across the rafah border, thats the egyptian border in the south of gaza yesterday. But the un of gaza yesterday. But the un says they need at least 100 every day now , according to the every day now, according to the interior ministry , an israeli interior ministry, an israeli airstrike targeted a refugee camp market in central gaza and that resulted in fatalities and injuries that that as the Israeli Military , the idf, said, Israeli Military, the idf, said, it will intensify its attacks on the north of the gaza strip. Now that most civilians are out. That most civilians are out. Meanwhile , the us has called meanwhile, the us has called on rishi sunak to recognise irans islamic revolution. Sorry, Islamic Revolutionary guard corps as terrorists. Guard corps as terrorists. Right . So you look at all of that and then back in the mix here in the uk, 100,000 people took part in a pro palestinian protest in london yesterday. Many more thousands actually attending marches in other cities across the uk. Cities across the uk. And theyve been calling for an end to the conflict in the middle east. And demanding the government stops supporting israels actions. Israels actions. Well, theres a lot to get your head around in all of that. Lets break it down. Should we, with our security editor, mark white, whos in tel aviv for us . I mean, say mark, theres a lot of information in there. Of information in there. Yes, there absolutely is. It was just yesterday evening that the Israeli Military announced that they were about to intensify their strikes on northern gaza as a prelude to this ground war that we have been anticipating for many days now. The troops are continuing to amass around the gaza strip, but as yet , they have not pushed but as yet, they have not pushed fonnard and they wont, it seems, until this operation to weaken a lot of the potential traps that might be awaiting the Israeli Military has been carried out. And true to the word the israelis carried out dozens of strikes in northern gaza overnight. There are reports of at least 50 deaths in gaza related to that. Now, the israelis say that they were striking hamas targets related to compounds that they were using to store weapons that they were using as command bunkers and alike. And in response, of and alike. And in response, of course , they were expecting it. Course, they were expecting it. And sure, as night follows day or day follows night, whichever one you want to go with, we had the rockets coming over from gaza and they have been coming over throughout the morning here in israel. Weve had strikes in israel. Weve had strikes just south of tel aviv. The sirens have gone off again, this time in the Southern City of ashkelon. And in areas around the gaza strip in northern israel. You mentioned the situation with hezbollah on the border with lebanon and the continued low level fighting thats taking place there in terms of artillery , air strikes, terms of artillery, air strikes, missiles that anti tank missiles and the like that are being fired over the border by hezbollah. The idf say that they hezbollah. The idf say that they have responded in kind to those attacks on their settlements and on their forces is in that area. On their forces is in that area. And they are warning hezbollah that they are on very dangerous ground if they continue with that escalation. That escalation. Okay, mark, thank you. Okay, mark, thank you. Okay, mark, thank you. Yeah, thanks very much indeed. Theres danger on absolutely every border at the moment. Every border at the moment. Well, marks, theyre keeping an us, course. An eye on it for us, of course. Put it together on a mannequin. They were quite difficult to sew because its quite. Actually it rough stuff. Actually it was rough stuff. Yeah, was actually a lot yeah, it was actually a lot easier was easier than i thought it was going be. Its probably the going to be. But especially scotland but especially so for scotland as we do have some showers to contend with, especially across more western parts. They may at times just creep a little bit further east. But i think the further east. But i think the further you greater further east you are greater chance of staying dry right throughout the day. Best of the sunshine also be towards sunshine will also be towards eastern could still be eastern parts. Could still be quite blustery at times across the very far north of scotland. And here where probably see and its here where probably see the showers and the most frequent showers and for very for many temperatures very similar to what weve seen of recent days. So highs reaching recent days. So highs reaching around scotland, around 10 to 12 across scotland, potentially up to about 15 degrees across the coast degrees across the south coast of england into the evening. Any showers across england . Wales showers across england . Wales generally fade in away. Could generally fade in away. Could see some showers just then moving into parts of Northern Ireland. As we go through the course of the night. Across course of the night. But across scotland, turning scotland, especially turning quite chilly, could see a touch of frost down further of frost come down further south, actually some higher cloud just keeping temperatures up around 8 to 9 degrees. So we start monday off on a fairly dry note across the board. Still the risk of some showery outbreaks of rain for Northern Ireland and maybe the very far north of scotland but best scotland. But the best of sunshine monday will be sunshine on monday will be across parts of across mainland parts of scotland because later on in the day, some thicker cloud some day, some thicker cloud and some outbreaks rain will arrive outbreaks of rain will arrive into coast of england. Into the south coast of england. Temperatures for most of us, again, very similar, around average for the time of year a a very good morning to you. Its 930 on sunday morning.
