Can seem far away , and its can seem far away, and its natural to ask why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. And thats as National Security. And thats as Prime Minister rishi sunak continues his whistlestop tour of the middle east in a bid to attempt to prevent the israel hamas war sparring spiralling into a wider conflict. As we speak. Rishi sunak is meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince in riyadh. Storm babet prince in riyadh. Storm babet batters scotland as a woman is swept to her death and hundreds are told to evacuate their homes as a red weather warning remains in place for parts of britain. In place for parts of britain. And so heres alex burkill with more on that. Hello we have some further exceptionally wet and windy weather to come through today due to storm babet. Ill have more shortly and paul coyte is here with your latest sport. I am. We have a springbok off weekend tomorrow. So the cricket weekend tomorrow. So the cricket world cup. Its england versus south africa. But more importantly , the semi final of importantly, the semi final of the Rugby World Cup , which is in the Rugby World Cup, which is in paris, england. Well try and paris, england. Well try and beat the champion south africa. Well, its lovely to be with you this friday morning. Well, its lovely to be with you this friday morning. Im anne diamond and this is breakfast on. Gb news breakfast on. Gb news and throughout the morning, obviously, were going to be learning more about the weather and how it may be affecting you. In fact, do get in touch and let us know whats happening in your area. Really dismal area. I had a really dismal drive in to the studios this morning. And though morning. And even though its nowhere near as in the south nowhere near as bad in the south at the moment as it is in the north, the rain was coming down in bucket loads and it makes it very, dodgy very, very difficult. And dodgy to do get in touch. To drive. So do get in touch. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Let us know what its like where you are. But first, politics is our top story and labour has dealt a double by election blow to rishi sunak by overturning huge conservative majorities in tamworth and mid bedfordshire. Sir keir starmer claimed labour was redrawing the political map by taking seats which had been comfortably conservative ahead of the general election, expected , of course, next year. Expected, of course, next year. In mid bedfordshire, alastair strathearn took the seat with a majority of 1192 over his tory rival. And following his win, he rival. And following his win, he told reporters he was ready to get to work. Just so humbled and grateful because this has been such a big campaign for me. I grew up around here. This area means so much to me and to see people across these towns and placing their faith and villages placing their faith in me today has just been so exhilarating. Im going to in me today has just been so exiworking|. Im going to in me today has just been so exiworking incredibly going to in me today has just been so exiworking incredibly hard] to in me today has just been so exiworking incredibly hard from be working incredibly hard from tomorrow they made tomorrow to show them they made the right choice. Meanwhile, in tamworth, labours defeated labours Sarah Edwards defeated tory Andrew Cooper by a majority of 1316. Speaking after the declaration, edwards said the pubuc declaration, edwards said the public has had enough of cuts to pubuc public has had enough of cuts to Public Services. Public services. Tonight the people of tamworth have voted for labours positive vision and a fresh start. Theyve sent a clear message to rishi sunak and the conservatives that they have had enough of this failed government which has crashed the economy and destroyed our Public Services. Services. Well, what do we all make of whats happened overnight . Gb news political reporter olivia utley is in westminster morning , utley is in westminster morning, olivia. Its interesting , isnt olivia. Its interesting, isnt it . On by election victories and various different sorts of results. Obviously the winners always say its because theyve won resoundingly and its time for change. And no doubt the tories will just sort of say, oh well, this is a by election and things happen in byelections. How do you read it . Well, i think normally you can take by elections results with a bit of a pinch of salt. Normally the turnout is pretty low. Normally its an low. Normally its an opportunity for concerts to rage against the government without their rage, meaning very much they know that the government isnt actually going to change hands so they can choose to vote for the Opposition Party as a sign they are discontent sign that they are discontent with going right now. With whats going on right now. But i think it is too but this time i think it is too much of a massive swing away from the conservatives to just try and explain it away to lose tamworth would have been very, very bad for the conservatives. They had a 19,000 majority there. But to lose mid bedfordshire as well, where they had a 24,000 majority is really pretty shocking. Yes turnout was low. Yes, therell be therell be sort of anger votes against the conservatives, but swings of this size are pretty much unprecedented. The swing in mid beds ayrshire away from the conservatives was the second biggest by election win for labour since the second world war. Now the first biggest was in 1996, just before labour swept to that enormous tony blair victory. I think what were hearing in westminster this morning is that until now the idea of labour just sweeping across the map in a huge general election win of the kind that we saw in 1997 with tony blair was thought to be pretty unlikely given that the conservatives at the moment have an 80 seat majority. Now the prospect of a labour win on that scale is looking increasingly likely. Looking increasingly likely. Things are looking very, very good for keir starmer. And now good for keir starmer. And now to me its just a question of how long rishi sunak will be able to hold off calling a general election. We were all expecting a general election either in the spring or the autumn of next year. Now its looking quite likely that he could hold off until december 2024, just in the hope that things can get better for the conservatives at the moment, things are very, very bad indeed. We are looking at the sort of redrawing of the electoral map that we saw when Margaret Thatcher swept to victory and when tony blair swept to victory. Swept to victory. Yes, as keir starmer have been saying anything yet, because obviously were going to because obviously were going to be hearing calls for an early general election. But that thats just what they say, isnt it . The day after the it is always what we hear the day after. And im sure well hear hear the same from the lib dems as well. Were expecting to hear from keir starmer, i think in about an hour, maybe a little bit more. And im sure we will hear call for a general hear a call for a general election. Expect rishi sunak election. I expect rishi sunak will want to that call will not want to heed that call what he believes at the moment. So is that if he what he believes at the moment. So hold is that if he what he believes at the moment. So hold off is that if he what he believes at the moment. So hold off untils that if he what he believes at the moment. So hold off until the at if he what he believes at the moment. So hold off until the very he what he believes at the moment. So hold off until the very end can hold off until the very end of next year, then hes hoping that some of the chaos thats ensued from Rising Interest Rates will have calmed down. So hes hoping that inflation will have fallen, Interest Rates will have fallen, Interest Rates will have fallen, Interest Rates will have fallen, and people on mortgage will be in a better position. And perhaps more willing to vote conservative. Its a pretty big gamble because, of course , were going because, of course, were going to have more by elections just like this one. And the expectation is that labour will just keep on winning. Were also then expecting local elections next may, and if the conservatives are trounced in those local elections as they have been in these two by elections, then rishi sunak will be in an even worse position going into a general election next december. Other than he next december. Other than he would be if he chose to have it earlier. So itll be really interesting to see how rishi sunak responds the, as you sunak responds to the, as you say, inevitable calls for a general election over the next few hours and days. Few hours and days. What would you put your money on early or late . I would put my money on a late general election. I think rishi sunak would like to hold out. Hes a very cautious man and he knows that if he can extend the pain, push the pain down the road a little bit, then thatll probably be easier for his mps. His mps. Okay, well join you a bit later on then. Olivia, thanks very much indeed for that. There you are. Thats the news overnight. Those two by Election Results coming in just in the last couple of hours. Its 6 09 last couple of hours. Its 6 09 now. The us president , joe biden, addressed Americans Last night where he tried to convince them to fund 100 billion in new spending to buy weapons and send humanitarian aid to israel. And ukraine. Lets have a look and a listen. I know these conflicts can seem far away and its natural to ask, why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. We American National security. We American Values are what make us a partner that other nations want to work to with put all that at risk. If we walk away from ukraine, if we turn our backs on israel, its just not worth it. Israel, its just not worth it. Thats why tomorrow im going to send to congress an urgent budget request to fund Americas National security needs to support our critical partners, including israel and ukraine. Is a smart investment thats going to pay dividends for American Security for generations as well. Gaza continues to suffer more destruction as now a Greek Orthodox church is hit in a strike, killing more civilians. The Greek Orthodox patriarchate of jerusalem said targeting the church constitutes a war crime. Church constitutes a war crime. Israel continues to heavily bomb gaza and hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes. These are the latest pictures from gaza that show the devastation and misery for many thousands of people. The enclave thousands of people. The enclave also remains under siege , with also remains under siege, with israel blocking supplies of water, electricity and fuel across its border. But a deal reached with israel this week means there is hope that aid waiting in egypt can cross the border into gaza in the coming hours , as israel insists its hours, as israel insists its only striking hundreds of hamas targets in gaza, which continues to hold more than 200 hostages. Among those held captive are two britons today. The diplomatic britons today. The Diplomatic Mission to stop the conflict spilling over between israel and other arab countries continues as the Prime Minister tours the middle east, meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince in riyadh as we speak right now. Yesterday mr sunak told israels Prime Minister netanyahu that the uk was proud to support israel. Was proud to support israel. Well, in a moment well have the latest live from our reporter in israel. But first, anne warren israel. But first, anne warren reports on rishi sunak war zone mission. Mission. Very good to see you. Im sorry about the circumstances in a succession of western leaders and senior politicians being hosted in the middle east. The Prime Minister has picked up where President Biden left off israels allies are on a United Mission to show solidarity with the war on hamas terrorism while trying to keep the wider region stable. The wider region stable. Welcome, Prime Minister rishi sunak was playing his part in sending a message to iran, which supports hamas and hezbollah in neighbouring lebanon. Neighbouring lebanon. On that, a wider regional conflict would have consequences. Israels allies want to contain the conflict by minimising the human suffering. Minimising the human suffering. We also recognise that the Palestinian People are victims of hamas to and that is why i welcome your decision. Yesterday that you took to ensure that routes into gaza will be opened for humanitarian aid to enter. But i also want to thank you for the support that your government has given to the families of british nationals caught up in this horror, including your efforts to release the hostages to release. But to secure their release. But with support coming with military support coming from its allies , israel is from its allies, israel is likely to ramp up its war on hamas with a major land, sea and air invasion of gaza in september, israel was on the cusp of negotiating peace with saudi arabia, with a visit to the region by the saudi ambassador, including a tour of the occupied west bank. Like so in saudi arabia, a critical meeting with the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman , who Prince Mohammed bin salman, who has made it clear that the war on hamas has derailed its new closer ties with israel. Not so, closer ties with israel. Not so, perhaps, according to downing street, which says the Prime Minister encouraged the crown prince to use saudis leadership in the region to support stability. Both now and in the long term. Some experts believe long term. Some experts believe that the aim of the hamas attack on october is to end closer ties between saudi arabia and israel. If hamas succeeds, the west will have lost a crucial player in bringing about peace in increasingly dangerous times. Increasingly dangerous times. Well, our reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv for us. And we can cross live to him now. Good morning , charlie. Now. Good morning, charlie. Youve been there nearly two weeks now and every day is this constant threat of invasion by land, sea and air and yet it still hasnt quite happened. So what is actually happening . What is actually happening . Well, that convoy still remains on the south on the border with the gaza strip. And last night we heard, i think the statement that will not be walked back from the defence minister, yoav galant , saying to minister, yoav galant, saying to troops on that border that you can see gaza from afar, but soon you will see it from the inside. Those kind of statements are a direct call that this invasion will happen. Its now a matter of when, not if. We also heard from a general speaking to troops down in the south, discussing the upcoming manoeuvres was and that the order will come. The question now is what will happen when that invasion takes place and what is the end state . We know what is the end state . We know what the primary objective is. The primary objective is to secure the north of the gaza strip to and remove the hamas terrorist capabilities in that area. But there is a concern in area. But there is a concern in israel that the war cabinet here and the unity government has not decided what they are intending to once they complete that to do once they complete that mission. A rushed mission. This is a rushed strategic objective. Thats the concerns here and indeed across the particularly in the the world, particularly in the us. Its understood that President Joe Biden pressed for more information on the Long Term Strategy in the gaza strip. But while joe biden is concerned about strategy and indeed funnelling aid into both ukraine and israel, his troops are coming under attack in the region. Last night, a Us Navy Destroyer off the coast of yemen in the red sea intercepted three missiles and some eight drones heading north, fired likely by the houthi terrorist militia. Thatis the houthi terrorist militia. That is an iran backed proxy Group Operating in yemen, which has been battling with saudi arabia for many years. Those missiles almost certainly going north towards israel. And at the north towards israel. And at the same time, over the last 48 hours, american troops and contractors deployed in iraq and syria have been targeted by missile strikes and suicide drone attacks. This represents drone attacks. This represents the clearest sign of escalation by the iranians since this conflict started and in the north this morning, the north of israel on that border with southern lebanon. Weve also heard information about another town in the north being evacuated as israel extends its compulsory Evacuation Order for civilians there. As that conflict heats up, some 30 missiles were fired from southern lebanon into the north yesterday. So escalation by the iranian proxies in the east, across the arab region and also in yemen more recently. And this upcoming order for that likely Ground Invasion. Okay , charlie, well leave it okay, charlie, well leave it there for the moment. Well be joining you, of course, later on in the program. Thanks very much indeed. Thank in the program. Thanks very much indeed. Thank you. Thats Charlie Peters there, our reporter tel but right reporter in tel aviv. But right now, bring in american now, lets bring in american political analyst ham for political analyst eric ham for more this. A very good more on this. A very good morning to you, eric. Yes, President Biden made that very interesting speech to the nation. Its quite rare that we hear directly from the office, directly from the oval office, isnt it , directly from the oval office, isnt it, pledging 100 billion for both ukraine and israel. How is that going to go down with the ordinary people of america and indeed, the houses . And indeed, the houses . Well, clearly , when he was well, clearly, when he was giving his address tonight, he was speaking to both of those audiences directly. The American People , and making clear why people, and making clear why this is important for the overall National Security interest , but more importantly, interest, but more importantly, recognising the chaos that is right now overtaking the house of representat gives. The president was also placing enormous pressure on house leadership to actually find someone to become the speaker, because thats the only way he can get this 100 billion aid package through congress and get those much needed resources both to ukraine and israel. To ukraine and israel. Yeah, i mean, what does have to happen next . Does there have to happen next . Does there have to be a vote . Could it. Could this big pledge, which sounds so resolute , could that actually be resolute, could that actually be a problem . Um, well, resolute, could that actually be a problem . Um, well , theres a problem . Um, well, theres there are two things that need to happen. First, the house of representatives needs to actually vote on a speaker. And actually vote on a speaker. And what we have seen is in the history of the united states, there has this is the longest there has this is the longest the house of reps resentatives, the house of reps resentatives, the Lower Chamber of the congress has gone without a speaken congress has gone without a speaker. And so as long as there is no speaker, there can be no appropriations packages. In appropriations packages. In fact, nothing can get through the entirety of the Congress Without a speaker. Remember, the speaker of the house of representatives is the third in line of succession to the presidency. So its a very important role. And while the president tonight was making the clarion call to the american to american citizens about what is at stake , he was also speaking at stake, he was also speaking directly to the house of representatives, saying get your house in order. Get your house in order fast , because we need in order fast, because we need this package, this aid package. This package, this aid package. And we also and also israel and ukraine need these resources because it is democracy that is under threat right now. Under threat right now. Well, how long could it take to get a speaker . That is the 64,000 question. We have no idea. In fact, we know that there is going to be a vote at 10 am. Eastern standard time here in washington, dc today on the next speaker. But right now, jim jordan, who is in line for that speakership , it is line for that speakership, it is not clear that he actually has the votes. Now, already we know there was a whole scale rejection by his supporters to empower the current speaker pro tem who is who is in that position. But until there is position. But until there is a speaker right now, much of that that aid that israel needs, that ukraine needs to continue to try to ward off russia. None of that can actually go to those key those key areas that need that funding. Yeah, ultimately , it makes it yeah, ultimately, it makes it an empty promise until he can actually deliver on a speaker and then on the 100 billion, 100 billion pledge. But eric, thanks very much indeed for joining us. Thats political analyst eric ham. Okay. Now analyst eric ham. Okay. Now closer to home, i was asking you and do get in touch, by the way, if the weather is being problematic for you. I had a problematic for you. I had a terrible drive in this morning andits terrible drive in this morning and its nothing like in the south. Its nothing like it is in other parts of britain where a red weather warning remains in certain parts of england and scotland. And residents of hundreds of homes have been urged to evacuate as storm babet batters the country , thousands batters the country, thousands of families have lost power for and are facing flooding from what they are calling unprecedented amounts of rain. Unprecedented amounts of rain. And of course, sadly, a 57 year old woman. Weve learned has died after being swept into a river in angus in scotland. And river in angus in scotland. And in fact, Angus Council responsible for a large area in the east of scotland, north of dundee, has called an evacuation of nearly 400 homes. Well, with with me in the studio right now, weather journalist nathan rao. A very good morning to you. Very good morning. Yeah, i mean, like i saying, it sort of seemed i was saying, it sort of seemed bad in the south where bad down here in the south where ive in certain ive been. But in in certain parts of scotland, it is just unprecedented. Unprecedented. Yeah. I mean, this is storm for bet that everyones been talking about over the last couple this is the couple of days. This is the second official storm of the season. This one, though, has got the the met got a sting in the tail. The met office as you mentioned, has issued red warning. Issued a red weather warning. Now, things incredibly now, these things are incredibly rare. Red weather rare. The last red weather warning for rain, to put it into context, was in 2020. And they dont issue them lightly. So this storm is going to cause some problems , has already some problems, has already caused some problems. Now the red warning is in place red weather warning is in place across the eastern of across the eastern side of scotland until midday today. But there a whole raft of weather there is a whole raft of weather warnings out throughout today and up until 6 am. On saturday, not only for rain, but for wind , not only for rain, but for wind, but it is going to be rain, particularly in scotland. That is going be the issue during is going to be the issue during this storm. Yes. I mean, heard yes. I mean, i heard Something Like its something strange like its going be a months worth of going to be a months worth of rain in 24 hours. Yes. And those numbers, those predictions actually going predictions are actually going up it going predictions are actually going upbe it going predictions are actually going upbe ten it going predictions are actually going upbe ten inches it going predictions are actually going upbe ten inches it the1g to be ten inches of rain. The met office increased that slightly. So i would i would hazard that you probably knocking on two worth knocking on two months worth of rain a that rain in a period of a day. That is a lot of rain. And it does come with hazards. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency are warning people take are warning people not to take risks rain. Sounds risks in this rain. It sounds obvious, people do it when obvious, but people do it when theres weather warning. Theres a red weather warning. It means danger. It means dangen and to put it into context, 30 of rain water can 30 centimetre of rain water can move a car. So you out move a car. So if you go out driving of red driving in this sort of red warning, not in control warning, youre not in control of the car. Dont walk in the rain. Stay away from coastal areas. The rnli dont go areas. Thats the rnli dont go sightseeing at the rain. Sightseeing looking at the rain. No, this is going no, i mean, this storm is going to probably until about to last probably until about saturday worst of saturday morning. The worst of it. Its a very slow moving storm. Not you storm. And this is not what you want we talk about want to hear when we talk about storms in autumn. Usually they come in quite quickly and its after hours, theyre gone. After 24 hours, theyre gone. This very, very this is moving very, very slowly. What causes slowly. And thats what causes the the rain the problem with the rain because stalls over the because it stalls over the country. Wait this country. So wait until this storm and its storm has passed and its looking better through the looking better going through the latter the weekend. Latter part of the weekend. Wheres the actually wheres the storm . Actually come from . Because obviously its lot of water. It is. Its coming in off the atlantic. A typical autumn atlantic. Its a typical autumn storm. Its coming in off the atlantic. Things up atlantic. These things pick up water, the water, moisture from the atlantic, mentioned. What atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usually what storms atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usutoy what storms atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usuto see what storms atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usuto see at what storms atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usuto see at thishat storms atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usuto see at this time orms atlantic, as i mentioned. What they usuto see at this time ofns we tend to see at this time of the year is they move through in about 24 hours. Thats what the last two have done. But there is a area of High Pressure a big area of High Pressure across across across the north, across scandinavia, called scandinavia, and thats called a blocking that is sort scandinavia, and thats called a blnbumping that is sort scandinavia, and thats called a blnbumping against hat is sort scandinavia, and thats called a blnbumping against it. T is sort scandinavia, and thats called a blnbumping against it. Andort of bumping against it. And keeping it stuck over the uk. Is like a washing machine and you just so its not just wont clear. So its not that carrying an extra that its carrying an extra amount of moisture, its just that its not moving through quickly slow quickly enough and those slow moving storms are always problematic, when problematic, particularly when it comes to rain. Really looks awful at yes, it really looks awful at the moment. As we were the moment. And as we were saying, just say again, red weather, morning warning means dangen weather, morning warning means danger. If danger. Dont go out if you if you dont dont you absolutely dont they dont issue red warnings good reason. Take care of it. Take care of it. Okay, nathan, thanks very much indeed. Lets catch much indeed. Right. Lets catch up very latest weather up with your very latest Weather Forecast wherever at forecast for wherever you are at the moment. Alex burkill. The moment. Heres alex burkill. Good to hello. Very good morning to you. And heres you. Im alex burkill and heres your latest gb news weather update. Storm babet already update. Storm babet has already brought of brought a significant amount of rain, parts of rain, particularly to parts of scotland have further scotland and we have further very windy to very wet and windy weather to come go through today. Come as we go through today. Heavy rainfall totals continuing to build across eastern parts to build up across eastern parts of particular, some of scotland, in particular, some severe but severe disruption here, but also heavy parts heavy rain across parts of northern ireland. Northern england parts wales and england into parts of wales and other areas of scotland. Too strong, gusty winds coming in from the east with gusts of 60, 70mph around eastern coastal parts adding to the disruption. But temperatures in the south a little bit above average for the time of year with highs of around 16 or 17 celsius. The wet and windy weather continues as we go through this evening and overnight with the weather system continuing to push its way from east as way in from the east as a result, always eastern result, its always eastern areas which are to see the areas which are going to see the heaviest rain and thats where were most see the were most likely to see the greatest disruption. Again, temperatures arent going to drop overnight because of drop much overnight because of the the rain, the strong the cloud, the rain, the strong winds. It going to be a mild winds. It is going to be a mild night some night for many, though. Some clear towards the south as night for many, though. Some cle look towards the south as night for many, though. Some cle look towardsds the south as night for many, though. Some cle look towards saturday. Jth as night for many, though. Some cle look towards saturday. And s night for many, though. Some cle look towards saturday. And we we look towards saturday. And we continue to see some further wet weather pushing its way from weather pushing its way in from the east, affecting parts of scotland north east england. Scotland and north east england. Not heavy expecting not as heavy as im expecting through its through today, but because its coming so close to the heavy rain seen recently, it rain weve seen recently, it could cause some further issues elsewhere wales elsewhere across england, wales and northern ireland, a drier picture, but a scattering of showers temperatures is a showers and temperatures is a little bit above average for the time thanks very much indeed. Thats just reminded me actually mean when its this wet at the moment it shows up small problems and ive got a leaky kitchen window that im probably going to have to home and going to have to go home and take care of. Do let us take some care of. Do let us know how coping with the know how youre coping with the weather what its weather and what its like wherever you are. Actually, id love from you. Gb views love to hear from you. Gb views at gbnews. Com. Now england are preparing on preparing to take on south africa semi final africa in tomorrows semi final of the Rugby World Cup. Paul of the Rugby World Cup. Paul coyte will be here with the latest on that. Youre watching breakfast news. Well come back. Youre watching and listening to breakfast with me, anne diamond. This morning. Its 628, right . Lets get on with a few of the top stories that are coming into our newsroom right now. A double by election defeat now. A double by election defeat for the tory party as labour secures a seismic victory in tamworth and mid bedfordshire for with the Prime Minister facing calls for an early general election , we cannot let general election, we cannot let the terrorists win. Us President Joe Biden pledges an unimpressive 100 billion in aid to help with the war effort in both israel and ukraine. I know these conflicts can seem far away and its natural to ask why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. And that as National Security. And that as Prime Minister, rishi sunak continues his whistle stop tour of the middle east in a bid to attempt to prevent the israel hamas war spiralling into a wider conflict. A wider conflict. As we speak, rishi sunak is in meeting right now with the Saudi Crown Prince in riyadh and storm babet batus, scotland. And storm babet batus, scotland. And we heard, sadly, that a woman was swept to her death and hundreds told to evacuate their homes as a red weather warning remains in place for parts of britain. Well, lets go through britain. Well, lets go through the sport now. Heres paul coyte. Whats up . Coyte. Whats up . Quite a lot going on, especially this weekend. And i did mention its a springbok off. I dont know whether thats a phrase thats being used, but i like it. Yes. England versus south africa. Its going to happen twice. Didnt i tell you england was going to win . You did. You did. But what . Yeah, you but what . What . Yeah, you did. I did. But it was fiji. I was just trying sort of. I was going on the side of caution. To be nice to you were trying to be nice to people. I was. Well, well see how things go at the weekend. So. So the first one well i should mention one is. Well i should mention the its the game tonight. Its two semi finals the world cup semi finals now in the world cup so its new zealand are going to be china. Now be playing argentina china. Now you would imagine new zealand be playing argentina china. Now you w win. Imagine new zealand be playing argentina china. Now you w win. Youjine new zealand be playing argentina china. Now you w win. You would ew zealand be playing argentina china. Now you w win. You would imagineld would win. You would imagine its be a walkover. But its going to be a walkover. But last year they had a really bad run and were actually last year they had a really bad run an by were actually last year they had a really bad run an by argentina, tually but beaten by argentina, china. But then things turned and then things turned around and new more like the new zealand are more like the all that we to know. All blacks that we used to know. So dont think theyre going so i dont think theyre going to problem, although to have a problem, although a lot names in rugby are saying lot of names in rugby are saying that theres more chance that argentina going new argentina are going to beat new zealand going zealand than england are going to beat south africa because its going be a very hard game. Its going to be very tough its going to be a very tough one, it, for england one, isnt it, for england now it really is. But if they won, yeah. And argentina yeah. And if argentina won, youve got an england argentina final thats when final and thats the time when you rugby that the hand of you play rugby that the hand of god actually allowed. God is actually allowed. So but it could you imagine such in think such a thing . In a way, i think its extremely unlikely, but you never with sport, anything never know. With sport, anything could happen, you know, without using any cliches at all. Theres also to about cliches and a lot of commentators and a lot of people around sport are using and they love to do this. And thats saying, oh , its and thats saying, oh, its revenge. Going to be that revenge. Its going to be that extra thing. Because in sport , extra thing. Because in sport, people bit of revenge people love a bit of revenge because africa because south africa beat england final of the england in the final of the world cup in 2019. Right for me, revenge, its not essence. I dont know. I dont know. You need something to up the spirit, dont you . Youre playing in a world cup semi final so youd think, surely thats enough that the fact your whole country is to going watching the fact that. Going be watching the fact that. Yeah, world cup yeah, yeah two world cup semi final get to semi final we could get to the final semi final we could get to the final, could world final, we could be world champions. But its that revenge is really want. Dont is what we really want. I dont believe that for a second. Theres things at play theres bigger things at play here its going be a huge here and its going to be a huge game. Its going to tough, game. Its going to be tough, but a chance and but there is always a chance and its like dont think its sounding like i dont think there chance. There is a chance. No, it doesnt. I know. No, it doesnt. I know. But whats the timetable for all then . All this then . They being played . When are they being played . When are they being played . Weve got the weve got so weve got the weve got the zealand game, new the new zealand game, new zealand, is zealand, argentina, which is tonight. Then england versus tonight. And then england versus south africa going be south africa is going to be tomorrow. Tomorrow tomorrow. So thats tomorrow weekend tomorrow. So thats tomorrow we well, is because then well, it is because then weve the cricket at the weve got the cricket at the same the cricket world cup. Now this is probably the longest and with respect to everybody the most everybody involved, the most bonng everybody involved, the most boring until you get boring world cup until you get to the it runs for two months. I know its been going on and oh, its crazy. Oh, its just crazy. I mean, got some i mean, youve got some players start in, you know, sometimes theyll make their debut too, theyll by debut too, and theyll retire by the same world cup. The end of the same world cup. This long this world cup this is how long this world cup is. Goes on a long time. Is. It goes on for a long time. So its two months long because they have ten different teams. Everybodys play each everybodys going to play each other. Have a other. So then they have a league and it only works league and then it only works out at end the top four out at the end who the top four are, and thats when it gets to knockout. Its always knockout. And its always knockout. Interesting. Oh, well, youre if youre oh, well, if youre if youre a sport lover, youre absolutely just arent you . Just bathing in it, arent you . Kind of. I mean, i am, well, kind of. I mean, i am, of course, but its knockout competition is where its at. Thats exciting thats where the most exciting part is. So thats going to be but most important thing at but the most important thing at the moment is that england and south have done south africa neither have done that will need that great. And both will need to if can have a to win this. So if we can have a double goal against the springboks, this weekend, it would amazing. Okay. But would be amazing. Okay. But whether its actually going to happen, whether its actually going to ha| makes whether its actually going to hapmakes it exciting. Okay is makes it exciting. Okay is that it . For the moment, ive got more. Got plenty more. Got plenty. Ive got plenty. Ive got plenty. No, no, no. Honestly, i could go on forever. Ive got another an ive got another half an hours ive got another half an hours worth enough hours worth an enough excitement moment. Excitement for the moment. Thanks very much okay. Right. Thanks very much indeed. We move its indeed. Right we move on. Its been that top been revealed that top government actually government scientists actually called death called rishi sunak doctor death in Covid Whatsapp in the secret Covid Whatsapp messages discussing messages well be discussing that headline makers that and more in headline makers coming hi there. Yes its 635. Youre watching breakfast here on gb news with me, anne diamond. But im joined now by the Deputy Editor of spiked, fraser myers, and of course, our Showbiz Reporter, stephanie takyi, who are going look through the are going to look through the papers. Good morning to papers. Very good morning to you. Good morning. Morning. You. Good morning. Good morning. Nice right this nice to see you. Right this is extraordinary. Fraser, these extraordinary. Fraser, these whatsapp messages , things that extraordinary. Fraser, these wh. Coming nessages , things that extraordinary. Fraser, these wh. Coming outsages , things that extraordinary. Fraser, these wh. Coming out now , things that extraordinary. Fraser, these wh. Coming out now to hings that extraordinary. Fraser, these wh. Coming out now to thejs that extraordinary. Fraser, these wh. Coming out now to the covid are coming out now to the covid inquiry and the way that these people spoke to each other. Yeah. And the way that they speak about about each other and about politicians. So the headune about politicians. So the headline here in the mirror is rishi sunak was branded doctor death by one of the scientists behind the scene, behind the scenes. Scenes. Thats, of course, when he was chancellor, when he was chancellor, dame angela mcqueen. Essentially, after essentially, this is after the to help out scheme. The eat out to help out scheme. People might remember that when you get 50 off your food , you could get 50 off your food, that was at the time. I mean, its so long ago now to remember rishi sunak was the most popular politician in the country. We all thought it was a great idea. I thought by that time we had all been bored of being locked up. We needed something to make us be social again. So i think its quite cruel that theyve labelled doctor death. Its quite cruel that theyve lab andi doctor death. Its quite cruel that theyve lab and i doctor death. Its quite cruel that theyve lab and i agree ctor death. Its quite cruel that theyve lab and i agree it. Or death. Its quite cruel that theyve lab and i agree it was eath. Its quite cruel that theyve lab and i agree it was in. H. Its quite cruel that theyve lab and i agree it was in a bid and i agree it was in a bid to try and revive the hospitality. Exactly. The Hospitality Industry been shut for industry had been shut down for several know, there several months. You know, there were were on the were many businesses were on the bnnk were many businesses were on the brink and this was a way of boosting that. Also, boosting that. But also, you know, people bit of know, giving people a bit of a relief after after months of lockdown. And i think think lockdown. And i think i think the accusation is really unfair because its reading because actually its reading history a little bit. Because actually its reading hi people a little bit. Because actually its reading hi people really a little bit. Because actually its reading hi people really a |back bit. Because actually its reading hi people really a |back at. If people really look back at it, covid cases actually it, cases covid cases actually exploded in the autumn exploded later on in the autumn and then the winter when we had and then the winter when we had a new variant that was when things got out control things really got out of control and started to die in and people started to die in large wasnt in the large numbers. It wasnt in the summer when this summer in august when this eat out help scheme. So why out to help out scheme. So why did they call him doctor death . I i think there was i think. I think there was a sort general mood. I think sort of general mood. I think i think it might have led to some increase in but not not increase in cases but not not a big explosion. I think at the time there was general time there was a general mood that people enjoying that if people are enjoying themselves, shouldnt be. Themselves, they shouldnt be. Yeah, there was this yeah, you know, there was this phrase bandied around covidiots yeah, you know, there was this phrayoud1died around covidiots yeah, you know, there was this phrayoud1dieneverynd covidiots yeah, you know, there was this phrayoud 1die|every time vidiots yeah, you know, there was this phrayoud 1die|every time theres and youd see every time there were people gathering a were some people gathering in a park, you having a drink, park, you know, having a drink, something is actually something which is actually perfectly safe behaviour outdoors, know, just with outdoors, you know, just with a few friends. They were branded covid. Yes. They were accused of spreading was spreading the virus. There was just you are just a sense that if you are there was a puritan atmosphere. I think if youre having fun, then killing people. Then youre killing people. Yes. Whereas if youre doing something , you know, like, something noble, you know, like, i cant make up my mind is these were whatsapp messages and all of us are on various whatsapp groups where you believe that it is encrypted from end to end. Is encrypted from end to end. So its totally private. Is it fair then . I mean, well , it fair then . I mean, well, there are two questions. One, is it the right thing for people like that within a group to be talking about others in those sort of derogatory is to be expected, i think. And think it was quite and i think it was quite a heightened like period of time. So i think different people were quick label their opinions quick to label their opinions towards people of how they handled the situation. But i do think that a lot of the politicians should be given a lot of slack because we hadnt been through a pandemic before and our economy was on the floor. We needed much floor. So we needed as much support possible at that time. So is it fair that these whatsapp now whatsapp messages are now being made public . Made so public . Its a difficult yes, its a difficult question, it . Because on question, isnt it . Because on the hand, government the one hand, government officials actually not officials are actually not supposed to talk to each other like they should be using like that. They should be using official channels that official channels so that everything on everything is recorded. But on the i just dont the other hand, i just dont believe that total transparency actually makes good actually makes for good government. Know, you do government. You know, you do have to have private conversations. You need to be conversations. You do need to be able test out ideas, able to test out ideas, sometimes vent your fury at your colleagues with other people. And youre working as a team. And youre working as a team. Exactly. Exactly. And, you know , there can be it should be know, there can be it should be possible people have possible for people to have arguments private and then arguments in private and then come an agreement about what come to an agreement about what theyre to the theyre going to present to the public. Think thats public. I dont think thats sinister dont thats, sinister. I dont think thats, you know, cover up. You know, a cover up. This is all getting a bit prurient, isnt it . Yeah, it is. I think comfortable. Think now comfortable. I think now probably are going comfortable. I think now pr be bly are going comfortable. I think now pr be quite are going comfortable. I think now pr be quite weary are going comfortable. I think now pr be quite weary nowz going comfortable. I think now pr be quite weary now ofoing comfortable. I think now pr be quite weary now of what to be quite weary now of what they do say and whatsapp, because whats because who knows whats going to out in the next few years. And if you have politicians speaking in private, you know, in guarded way, then were not in a guarded way, then were not going good decisions. Going to get to good decisions. If people constantly having going to get to good decisions. If think, constantly having going to get to good decisions. If think, what onstantly having going to get to good decisions. If think, what onstthisr having going to get to good decisions. If think, what onstthis looking to think, what will this look like at the next inquiry into blah, blah, blah, is not blah, blah, blah, that is not going to a good outcome. Going to lead to a good outcome. I dont know. You wonder whats coming next. Steph though, been looking at though, youve been looking at the about the safety of the sun and about the safety of our Maternity Services and this is utterly shocking. Is utterly shocking. Its horrible. And because you do hear some Horror Stories with women when theyre giving birth, i think people always underestimate how much pain a woman can go through and the potential, the high potential there is for a woman to lose her life. So a watchdog has come out and said that two thirds of clinics are now below standards , clinics are now below standards, and that is two thirds, too much when it comes to womens health. And we already know that the nhs is already on its knees. But the is already on its knees. But the fact that its been managed to grow to this point where the service is for maternity have supped service is for maternity have slipped under the radar like this, its just appalling. This, its just appalling. And it seems to be that all the big nhs scandals , so many of the big nhs scandals, so many of them happen in maternity wards. Yes, they do. I mean weve you know, theres been rightly a lot of focus on lucy letby and the sort of 300 or so babies that she murdered, but there are , you she murdered, but there are, you know, there have been hospital trusts where similar numbers of people have died from people of babies have died from negligence, things like that. Its really there was one mp who made a speech in the commons yesterday. Im just trying to find her name. She shes had a particularly terrible um, particularly terrible time, um, giving her daughter. Giving birth to her daughter. Um, and she, she stood up in the house yesterday and house of commons yesterday and she how frightened she spoke about how frightened shed and how really shed been and how she really did her life. And did nearly lose her life. And she said, never, ever she said, ive never, ever spoken in such a public place about such a private thing. And at point, started to at one point, she started to break down and one of the other mps stood up and spoke for a while while she while she got her her sort of composure back. But she was just trying to say how appalling. Yeah, in one case how appalling. Yeah, in one case she was she was haemorrhaging terribly after having her daughter and she was lying next to her daughter who was screaming her little baby was screaming her little baby was screaming and she couldnt hold her. She couldnt. She couldnt move. She called for the move. So she called for the nurse the nurse came in and nurse and the nurse came in and she said, can you can you hold my and nurse said, not my baby . And the nurse said, not my baby . And the nurse said, not my baby, not my problem. And walked wow. Wow. That i mean, you can and if that i mean, you can barely believe that can happen. Barely believe that can happen. But clearly there are examples of terrible things happening. And think we are going to and i think we are going to be more these horror be hearing more of these Horror Stories, you know, of doctors stories, as you know, of doctors who are turning a blind who are just turning a blind eye. Think theres been eye. I think theres been this kind environment moment and kind of environment moment and this nature there where its been okay for so long and no ones held accountable. You ones held them accountable. You know, are we just going to wait for more . Lucy letby cases until we wake and realise we actually wake up and realise actually theres big problem actually theres a big problem here. Also attitude here. And its also the attitude of are working in of the people who are working in the. I know theyre the nhs. I know theyre ovennorked, they do need to ovennorked, but they do need to realise theyve got peoples lives here. Mean well obviously yeah, i mean well obviously underline the point that some are absolutely brilliant , but are absolutely brilliant, but clearly there are a number who are not. Is it misogyny or is it because somewhere along the line hospitals and staff, maybe even female staff are thinking childbirth . Its a natural thing i well, i dont know whether its misogynistic, but the word natural is pertinent here because there was i think it was the ockenden report a couple of years ago into maternity wards. They said there was a kind of culture where a lot of maternity staff believe in this idea of natural birth, that its better to for women to have less pain relief or all. And that relief or none at all. And that obviously conflicts with the needs of patients quite severely. So you know, and thats been one of the recurring problems where women are saying theyre in pain and nurses are saying not taking you saying theyre not taking you know, true. Its know, its not true. Its natural. Its natural. Well, its not natural. Well, is its not natural. Well, it is natural, but, you know, were beyond we modern medicine. It natural for women to it is natural for women to die childbirth. I dont want die in childbirth. I dont want to scare but it is to scare anybody, but it is a scary thing. And thats what modern medicine to correct. Medicine is there to correct. Yes, exactly. Gosh. Okay. Lets gosh. Okay. Well, lets move on. What, fraser, on. Ill tell you what, fraser, tell about the ulez dinosaur. Tell us about the ulez dinosaur. I seen this ulez i think weve seen this ulez dinosaur havent we . Dinosaur before, havent we . So this is the latest stunt from the so called blade runners that think we could see that that i think we could see that on screen. There you see that . You can see the man dressed as a dinosaur blocking one of the mobile ulez cameras. Many of the static cameras so many of the static cameras have been vandalised. People have now been vandalised. People have now been vandalised. People have been cutting cables , have been cutting the cables, spraying them with foam, covering them up in some kind of way. And now people are way. And now people are targeting these anti ulez protesters are targeting the mobile cameras standing in front of them in these dinosaur costumes. I think, you know , costumes. I think, you know, obviously we shouldnt condone lawlessness or anything like that, but it does show that there is still a real anger against the ulez scheme, which i think is fundamentally unjust. Think is fundamentally unjust. So its obviously targets people who can do these stunts, though, also show that instead of violating, you know, the camera or Something Like that, theyre just trying to keep it in the news that theyre against. So, yes. So, of course, a stunt like this isnt lawless. But, you know, i mean, its funny. Its funny and it gets people talking about this because i think, you know, with these kind of initiatives, they get of initiatives, they just get brought were supposed to brought in and were supposed to just with just deal with it. I with these and i think with these protests is doing that actually. It brings it back into the pubuc it brings it back into the public periphery and theyre not just let this go. But just going to let this go. But the stunts, you the thing with these stunts, you think what it what avail . Think what is it to what avail . What do actually achieve what do they actually achieve here . A bit of a humour, here . We get a bit of a humour, but not actually going to but its not actually going to change any policy as well. I dont know. It gets us talking about it, i suppose it keeps us talking it. Keeps us talking about it. Meanwhile tell about netflix meanwhile tell us about netflix because the meanwhile tell us about netflix becalwhere the meanwhile tell us about netflix becalwhere i the meanwhile tell us about netflix becalwhere i dont the meanwhile tell us about netflix becalwhere i dont think|e point where i dont think anyones going be able to anyones going to be able to afford how binge watch things afford to how binge watch things on netflix. Well, you know, netflix so well, you know, netflix is so a our life now. A part of our life now. Know, i dont know you know, i dont know anybody who does not watch netflix, but been big netflix, but theres been a big thing to crack thing of them trying to crack down on password sharing. And they thought that they were going to lose subscribers. But actually up. Actually theyve gone up. Theyve about nine theyve increased by about nine tens of customers tens of millions of customers have actually subscribed to the onune have actually subscribed to the online but online streaming site, but now theyre to hike prices theyre set to hike up prices andits theyre set to hike up prices and its to go up to 8. 99 and its set to go up to 8. 99 a month, which is a pound extra. And i do think people will actually pay that money for netflix because theres so much content available on netflix and almost people are addicted. Theyve got that kind of Binge Watching mentality theyre watching mentality when theyre watching mentality when theyre watching netflix i think watching netflix now. So i think for people to cough up an extra pound, think thats not a pound, i think thats not a problem. Pound, i think thats not a pro iszm. Pound, i think thats not a pro is that is that for the but is that is that for the but thats with adverts as well isnt thats with adverts. So you want the premium so if you want the premium its 17. 99. So that starts to get expensive, it becomes steep but isuppose expensive, it becomes steep but i suppose still cheaper i suppose its still cheaper than of whole sky than a sort of whole sky subscription. Subscription. Mean obviously yeah. I mean obviously netflix has completely transformed the television landscape. I barely know anyone who, other than things who, you know, other than things news and things like this. News and things like this. People dont watch. Sit down and watch a drama anymore or watch a late night film anymore. That much. I mean, they obviously do. Much. I mean, they obviously do. But changed the way we watch. Its changed the way we watch television. But i mean, that was particularly during lockdown. Thats their subscriptions thats when their subscriptions went didnt they . People are just addicted to netflix of understand netflix and i kind of understand why have up their why they have put up their prices. At the were prices. At the moment. Were seeing strikes and seeing the hollywood strikes and its these streaming its because these streaming services are not paying their talent money deserve. Talent, the money they deserve. So money has to come from so the money has to come from somewhere. Somewhere. Yeah. Yeah. Tell us more about free laser about this. Um, about this. This man in poland who posed as a mannequin in in the shop so that he could then stay till after closing time and raid the shop. Yeah he managed to stay. Absolutely still for hours so that he went completely undetected by any of the shops. Undetected by any of the shops. Thats him on the right. Thats him. Thats him on the right. Thats the. For those of you listening on the radio, im ever so sorry. But there is hes standing hes standing dead shop window and he looks mannequin. And he looks like a mannequin. And hes standing dead still. He hes you know, got the right on as well. He right outfit on as well. He completely blends into the other. So how long he stand like so how long did he stand like that for . Im not sure. Im not sure. But he managed to essentially wait out till closing time. By the time theyd put the shutters down. And then he was to down. And then he was able to essentially lot of the essentially steal a lot of the goods store. Also went goods in the store. He also went and had a dinner aftennards and has been caught. You know, has been caught. So, you know, on hand, a for on the one hand, a for originality. Yeah. See for execution. Yes. Fortunately yes. Fortunately and he has got a ten year and now he has got a ten year sentence in prison. Apparently done apparently hes done something before, Something Like it before, but he certainly the news. Isnt certainly made the news. Isnt it . And interestingly , steph, it . And interestingly, steph, youve looking at the rate youve been looking at the rate of shoplifting. Which is through the roof as well. That has rose by 25. That has rose by 25. We know that the police are also up to their neck with solving crimes, but it seems that shoplifting is going under the radar. Theres been like 1. 7 million offences in a year. The radar. Theres been like 1. 7 million offences in a year. And i think now criminals know while shoplifters, they kind of know that theyll just get a slap in the wrist if they do get caught. I dont think we have been cracking down on it to make it actually not look appealing to people to shoplift it anymore. The trouble is, it involves confronting, it . I confronting, isnt it . And i think were all worried about that now. Yeah. That now. And |. That now. And you know, especially if youre, you know, a member of staff a shop , it does feel as staff in a shop, it does feel as if your pay grade to if its above your pay grade to suddenly someone who suddenly confront someone who might things might turn violent or things like interestingly, i like that. Interestingly, i think i cant remember which minister but there was minister it was, but there was a minister it was, but there was a minister recently who said members public should members of the public should make citizens arrests. And you think, try it. If you think, okay, you try it. If you if you like it, you know, ive seen somebody try to make a citizens arrest years ago. Actually, it was in birmingham and it became very frightening because it eventually tussle eventually became a tussle between everybody between two guys and everybody else standing back watching. Else was standing back watching. And was it was very it could and it was it was very it could have very dangerous. Have got very dangerous. Yeah. I mean, i applaud people with the bravery and the strength do that. But, you strength to do that. But, you know, dont thats know, i dont think thats a substitute for adequate policing and adequately prosecuting people who commit crimes because, yeah, at the moment, as youre saying, stephanie, i think you think its pretty much if you steal less than £200 in a go, you just get a fine. Yeah, fine. The know that the courts the police know that the courts arent interested in dealing with theyre not with this, so theyre not interested dealing with this. Interested in dealing with this. A of goes back to i think a lot of it goes back to i think there changes i think it there were changes to i think it was the crime and justice act in around goes right back to around 2014. Goes right back to that. So we need to look that. So maybe we need to look at changes to the law to deal with this, to know that, you know, people know know, so that people know that there a punishment at there will be a punishment at there will be a punishment at the end of it. But i think as well, shoplifting can be an addiction. Im quite interested in the psychology behind people who shoplift because we all shoplift because because we all know there have been cases of people can it and people who can afford it and they just still go and steal things like they get a little bit a fix from it. As bit of a fix from it. But as well, like theyre stealing well, like what theyre stealing is not transforming their life greatly. You greatly. And its like, you still youre to still today, youre going to have back tomorrow to have to go back tomorrow to steal its like it steal more. Its almost like it becomes a job for them. Who is the celebrity chef that cheese . That used to steal cheese . I cant remember from tesco or something. No, but thats extra ordinary thing. Came out like 5 or 10 years ago. And he was a celebrity celebrity chef, so he could well have afforded easily could have afforded it. And the other element of this is you know, theres is also, you know, theres a criminal involvement criminal gang involvement as well. The well. You can see that in the items that are being stolen, people are stealing with people are stealing things with longer theyre longer shelf life. Theyre not stealing, the of stealing, you know, the sort of bread for their or whatever bread for their baby or whatever it people are stealing baby it is. People are stealing baby formula because that lasts long. Condoms talking condoms we were talking about the other week. Right. Yes, thats right. Yes, thats right. You know, various yeah. You know, various toiletries , stuff that, toiletries, stuff like that, because have resale because they have a resale value. Yes, thats right. Yes, thats right. An organised crime. Thats an organised crime. Yeah. Seen as yeah. And ive seen that as well. Have you ever witnessed shoplifting . Yes, i have. And its quite scary. And well, ive scary. And as well, ive actually and actually been in a store and someone has stolen my phone as well. And that quite a swift well. And that was quite a swift thing. Like this woman was holding clothes and she holding lots of clothes and she just me by. Within a just passed me by. Within a minute my phone had gone and i was the shock, you feel, was just the shock, you feel, but you realise it was it was so well organised. Within a minute iphoned well organised. Within a minute i phoned phone and it was i phoned my phone and it was off. Good lord. So its quite a scary feeling. Witnessed shoplifting . No but witnessed shoplifting . No i havent. I havent. Ive seen people have stolen. Have stuff stolen. Yeah, ive seen, but yeah, ive seen, ive seen it twice. But yeah, ive seen, ive seei it twice. But yeah, ive seen, ive seei was ice. But yeah, ive seen, ive seei was once at the big marks i was once at the big marks and spencers street and spencers in Oxford Street in london where apparently it used to a big problem. I used to be a big problem. I dont know whether still is, dont know whether it still is, but remember walking past the but i remember walking past the doonl but i remember walking past the door. I was i was going in and a woman was coming out and she had armloads , armloads of clothes armloads, armloads of clothes over her arms, still with the price tags on and the hangers and everything like that. She very clearly had not paid for them at all. And out came a Security Guard running after her down the road , didnt get down the road, didnt get anything, her all anything, didnt get her at all because she was in a car swept away, just like that. Yeah. Yeah. The youngsters yeah. Its the youngsters i worry about because a lot worry about because i see a lot of people stealing. Like worry about because i see a lot of other people stealing. Like worry about because i see a lot of other day le stealing. Like worry about because i see a lot of other day ie stealing. Like worry about because i see a lot of other day i saw aling. Like worry about because i see a lot of other day i saw two g. Like worry about because i see a lot of other day i saw two girlse the other day i saw two girls and one of them got caught and the other one just left was running for her and i just running for her life. And i just thought that really worth running for her life. And i just thoand. That really worth running for her life. And i just thoand it that really worth running for her life. And i just thoand it just1at really worth running for her life. And i just thoand it just seems ly worth running for her life. And i just thoand itjust seems like orth running for her life. And i just thoand it just seems like they it . And it just seems like they egg other on to just take egg each other on to just take Little Things like sandwiches. Little things like sandwiches. And youve people and youve seen people may have summer there have seen over the summer there were organised were sort of organised shoplifting sprees organised on tiktok with large numbers of young people , you know, raiding young people, you know, raiding the streets in Oxford Street, jd sports and things like that. And yeah, you think, god, what happens when they get caught in there . Well, feroza stephanie, weve got to leave it there right now because were having another look. Quickly at what happened overnight two by elections overnight with two by elections and defeat in and a rather nasty defeat in both them for the both of them for the conservatives. Now cross conservatives. Lets now cross to speak to the chairman of the conservative party. Greg hands a very good morning to you, although not a particularly good news morning you. Greg news morning for you. Greg well, obviously , theres a well, obviously, theres a very disappointing result for us, but by elections are by elections. Governments are rarely win by elections. Were rarely win by elections. Were obviously disappointed a large number of conservative voters , i number of conservative voters, i think, stayed at home. The labour won the by elections, but their vote did not increase. In fact, it went down slightly in mid bedfordshire. So i dont think was a resounding think there was a resounding level of support for labour. But clearly we have a lot of work to do. Rishi sunak, myself, do. Rishi sunak, myself, everybody making sure the conservatives get our message out better. Why do you think tory voters stayed at home when they must have known as you do, that these were very important, these by elections as yeah, but i think they knew that it wasnt going to determine who was going to be the and i think also the government and i think also there are significant legacy issues, if you like, in both constituencies. Constituencies. You know, the reason why the by election was called the by election was called in the first place, but what we need to do get on with deliver ing do is to get on with deliver ing on rishi sunak five priorities as weve got some really exciting new approaches on net zero hs2 for the smoking changes , the reforms to a levels, a lot of key government reforms and changes is coming through and those are the sort of exciting policies that will be presenting more of to the electorate as we move fonnard to next years general election. Very clearly , after a very clearly, after a by election defeat , such very clearly, after a by election defeat, such as very clearly, after a by election defeat , such as the by election defeat, such as the one youve just suffered , the one youve just suffered, the opposition who did very well last night, are going to call for an earlier general election, bnng for an earlier general election, bring on the fight now. We all last nights results make any difference to the Prime Minister as to when he calls a general election in. Well, look, i think, first of all, i dont think the opposition parties did do particularly well. Actually, the liberal democrats, for example, did put up a good showing, did not put up a good showing, lost their deposit in tamworth. A hardly improved their a labour hardly improved their vote at all and in fact went down in mid bedfordshire slightly, but i dont think that will have an impact on the general election. Clearly we need to recognise that a large number of our conservative voters did not come out yesterday in mid bedfordshire and tamworth despite having excellent candidates in Festus Akinbusoye and in andy cooper. So we need to work harder. We need to make sure that people get the government message that we are delivering against the five priorities, making progress and moving fonnard with exciting new policies as well. New policies as well. Well, you say you must work harder, but what else can you do now . I mean, you say your policies are exciting , but policies are exciting, but theyre clearly not exciting enough to give you those two seats. Last night. Well clearly, we are making progress. We are reducing inflation. The all of the indicators are that debt will be starting to fall. Were getting to grips fall. Were getting to grips with the hospital waiting lists, the boats. We are, i think the the boats. We are, i think the number of boat arrivals is 20 down on last year. Obviously, its still too high. Thats why i say theres still work to be done. We need to keep delivering against those five. Priority is. Against those five. Priority is. So whats whats next . I mean. So whats whats next . I mean , whats next for you . What what changes may we see now from the tories in order to sort of garner the support that you need over coming months . Over the coming months . Well, i think well continue to deliver against the five priorities and we will continue to put fonnard an Exciting Programme under rishi sunak going fonnard. You know, clearly we need to think about, reflect on the reasons that people didnt come out to vote yesterday. They were both very low turnout by elections. You know, we need to reflect on that, digest that as well. But that, digest that as well. But we ultimately need to be getting on with the important job of governing the country , making governing the country, making sure that we halve inflation and reduce debt, grow the economy, reduce debt, grow the economy, reduce hospital waiting lists and stop the boats. And stop the boats. And very, very briefly, how do you think the Prime Minister is doing in the middle east at the moment . Well, i think hes again, engaging and really important meetings showing our strong support for israel, which has been a victim of these terrible terrorist attacks. So the meetings yesterday with the israeli Prime Minister, with the israeli Prime Minister, with the israeli president , but also engaging more broadly across the regions. Also yesterday in saudi arabia, i think the Prime Minister is currently on his way to egypt, you know, making sure that we engage across the region to make sure that this doesnt spill over into a wider regional conflict. I spill over into a wider regional conflict. I think the Prime Minister is showing showing the leadership that this country needs and engaging on the international stage. Okay , greg hands, thank you okay, greg hands, thank you very much indeed for that. Well be gb news property phrases. Good morning. Its 7 00 on friday, the 20th of october. Today, a double by election defeat for the tory party as labour secures a seismic victory in tamworth and mid bedfordshire with the Prime Minister facing calls for an early general election, well be getting live reaction. Now to top story and labour now to our top story and labour has dealt a double by election blow to rishi sunak by overturning huge conservative majority his in tamworth and mid beds beardshear sukiya starmer claimed labour was riddled swing the political map by taking seats which had been comfortably conservative ahead of the general election, expected sometime next year in mid bedfordshire , alastair mid bedfordshire, alastair strathearn took the seat with a majority of 1192 votes over his tory rival and following his win , he told reporters that he was ready to get to work. Ready to get to work. Just so humbled and grateful because this has been such a big campaign for me. I grew up around here. This area means so much to me and to see people across these towns and villages placing their me today placing their faith in me today has just been so exhilarating. And going to be working and im going to be working incredibly tomorrow to incredibly hard from tomorrow to show right show them they made the right choice. Show them they made the right cho meanwhile, tamworth , meanwhile, in tamworth, labours Sarah Edwards defeated tory Andrew Cooper by a majority of 1316. Speaking after the declaration, she said the public has had enough of cuts to Public Services. Services. Tonight the people of tamworth have voted for labours positive vision and a fresh start. Theyve sent a clear message to rishi sunak and the conservatives is that they have had enough of this failed government which has crashed the economy and destroyed our Public Services. Well earlier on i spoke to conservative Party Chairman greg hands and asked him about this double defeat for his party. Well, obviously , theres a well, obviously, theres a very disappointing result for us, but by elections are by elections. Governments are rarely win by elections. Were rarely win by elections. Were obviously disappointed. A large number of conservative voters , i number of conservative voters, i think, stayed at home. The labour won the by elections, but their vote did not increase. In fact, it went down slightly in mid bedfordshire. So i do not think there was a resounding level of support for labour. But clearly we have a lot of work to do. Rishi myself, do. Rishi sunak, myself, everybody making sure the conservatives get our message out better. Well, joining us now for the latest on these by Election Results. Gb news Political Editor Christopher Hope and gb News Reporter jack carson editor Christopher Hope and gb News Reporterjack carson. Nice News Reporter jack carson. Nice to see you both there. Standing in the dark. Lets go to you, jack. First of all. Yes, its quite a night overnight in tamworth. We heard earlier that tamworth. We heard earlier that greg hands obviously the defeated trying to talk down their actually their defeat, but actually labour see as quite a victory labour see it as quite a victory in tamworth, dont they . Well it certainly is. I mean before this by election of course the conservatives held more than a 19,000 vote majority here. It was almost going to be unheard of for them to be able to overturn and have such a political swing, but thats exactly what labour achieved here overnight and yesterday as voters headed to the polls, labour securing 45 of the vote share here and overturning, of course that majority turnout of course that majority turnout of course does have always have a big part to play in by elections. It was only a 35 turnout here in tamworth, which would have had some impact of course, but labour still increased their vote share and of course before the election took place i was here in tamworth. I was speaking to people, voters people, speaking to voters, asking it really is asking them what it really is thats important and thats important to them and everything. Point that everything. Every point that they up, whether they were bringing up, whether it the redevelopment it was the redevelopment of the high whether high street here and whether this street be this high street could be revived, whether was doctors revived, whether it was doctors appointments, whether it was feeling in the area with feeling safe in the area with anti social behaviour more anti social behaviour and more visible policing. All of those points were points which labours edwards were labours Sarah Edwards were putting of her putting fonnard as part of her local manifesto. So perhaps its local manifesto. So perhaps its no surprise that the issues that voters were the ones voters felt here were the ones that labours Sarah Edwards was promising to promising she was going to tackle. But of course, she said tackle. But of course, she said that after her after her that she, after her after her acceptance speech, that how important this was and how they what she wanted, then a general election thinking, saying that rishi sunak should call a general election now. And of course keir starmer that course keir starmer saying that labour redrawing the labour should redrawing the political map. Tamworth historically very much gone historically has very much gone with how the with the country and how the country it was of course country votes. It was of course was labour blair and was labour under blair and gordon brown and then it switched conservative when David Cameron became of course Prime Minister that initially minister under that initially coalition so it very Coalition Government. So it very much with the country, much goes with the country, tamworth. Bit of tamworth. So it is a bit of maybe a bit of an maybe possibly a bit of an indication to in a years indication as to how in a years time the country may vote. But labour certainly not taking advantage. Not seeing advantage. Certainly not seeing this as a definite of course win and a definite kind of confirmation of government next yean confirmation of government next year. They still admit, of course , they have lot of work course, they have a lot of work to do, but so do the conservatives if they are to win back this seat and possibly a years back this seat and possibly a years time. Yes, we how soon it yes, we wonder how soon it will jack, thanks very much will be. Jack, thanks very much indeed. Lets cross to indeed. Lets cross now to christopher, mid christopher, whos in mid bedfordshire again. Though bedfordshire again. Even though the trying to talk the tories are trying to talk down nature of their defeat, down the nature of their defeat, a swing to labour , there a massive swing to labour, there. A massive swing to labour, there , just huge this this seat in mid bedfordshire has been held by the tories since 1931 and normally the turnout here is 74. Normally thats a true blue vote. It was down to 44 yesterday. And thats why really the partys lost this seat to complete disaster. Nadine dorries of course , accused of dorries of course, accused of being an absentee mp for so many years. The numbers are fascinating. The majority were fascinating. The majority were just 1192 for the labour new labour mp alistair treahearn. Labour mp alistair treahearn. Interestingly for me the reform party, which is of course run by our gb news colleague richard tice this, his party got over nearly 2000 votes. Thats a party which sits to the right of the tory party now, had that party not existed, had done a deal with the tories, this seat would still be a tory seat. And i wonder whether as we go into the election period, the idea of doing a deal with reform because it losing the it is taking away and losing the tories power. Well, whether that kind of chat may may get kind of chat may get may get more as go more may increase as we go fonnard. Also striking that our fonnard. Also striking that our pm, rishi sunak became Prime Minister from monday. Now that means under the tory party rules that letters of no confidence can go into mr sunak about mr sunak to graham brady , the sunak to graham brady, the chairman of the 22 committee from monday. Chairman of the 22 committee from monday. Im not saying its going to happen. Theres no real challenge on the backbenches, but there could be a very difficult period for leadership as the go into the as we go into the go into the Christmas Period for rishi sunak. Yes, its going to be a difficult period anyway. Do you think last nights results think that last nights results will affect decision over will affect his decision over when general election . Yeah , almost certainly. Yeah, almost certainly. Yeah, almost certainly. And the odds have just lengthened to think on the may june election that some of us have been thinking they want to do. The have been thinking they want to do. The tories like to go campaigning like we all do. I suppose even reporting on it in the sunlight in the daylight or not in winter. But problem not in winter. But the problem theyve think the theyve got is they think the numbers are so bad from this election. I think election. The swing. I think labour labours labour winning this means the tories this seat means that the tories might be down to as few as just 60 after the election. 60 seats after the election. A complete wipe out were this this swing to be reflected nationally . Of course it wont be. These by elections are very much bespoke to the area. The time of year, etcetera. But it does mean, as you say, anne, that we are now looking more likely to have an election in a year time, october, november. By then, the government be then, the government will be hoping of liz hoping that the memory of liz truss, his time in government, which year ago today, a which ended a year ago today, a year today, truss period year ago today, the truss period ended. Might be ended. Dont forget, might be receding the rear view receding into the rear view mirror the electorate and mirror for the electorate and the could be down. The inflation could be down. People might feel a bit better off after maybe a tax cutting budget in march, but its not easy for the tory party. And again, just gets frankly. My goodness. Reflecting on a year liz truss resigned. Year ago, liz truss resigned. Well, our two gentlemen on the spot, thank you very much indeed. Christopher hope there indeed. Christopher hope there in mid and jack carson in in mid beds and jack carson in tamworth with those overnight by Election Results. Its 7 11 already. The us President Joe Biden addressed Americans Last night where he tried to convince them to fund 100 billion in new spending to buy weapons and send humanitarian aid to israel and ukraine. Lets have a watch and listen to what he said. Listen to what he said. I know these conflicts can seem far away and its natural to ask, why does this matter to america . So let me share with america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. Americas National Security. Dodi American Values are what make us a partner that other nafions make us a partner that other nations want to work with to put all that at risk. If we walk away from ukraine, if we turn our backs on israel, its just not worth it. Thats why tomorrow im going to send to congress an urgent budget request to fund Americas National security needs to support our critical partners , support our critical partners, including israel and ukraine is a smart investment thats going to pay dividends for American Security for generations. Security for generations. Well, gaza continues to suffer more destruction as now a Greek Orthodox church is hit in a strike, killing more civilians. The head of the Greek Orthodox church of jerusalem said targeting the church constitutes a war crime. Israel constitutes a war crime. Israel continues to heavily bomb gaza and hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes. These are the latest pictures were bringing you now from gaza that show devastation and that show the devastation and the misery , of course, for many the misery, of course, for many thousands of people in the enclave. Also remains under siege with israel blocking suppues siege with israel blocking supplies of water, Electric City and fuel across its border. But and fuel across its border. But and fuel across its border. But a deal reached with israel this week means that there is hope that aid thats waiting now in egypt could cross the border into gaza in the coming hours. Israel insists its only striking hundreds of hamas targets in gaza, which continues to hold more than 200 hostages. Of course , among those held now of course, among those held now we know two britons well today, the Diplomatic Mission to stop the Diplomatic Mission to stop the conflict spilling over between israel and other arab countries continues as the Prime Minister tours the middle east. And yesterday , mr sunak told and yesterday, mr sunak told israels Prime Minister netanyahu that the uk was proud to support israel. Well, in to support israel. Well, in a moment well have the latest live from our reporter in israel. But first, anne warren reports on rishi sunak war zone mission. On rishi sunak war zone mission. Very good to see you. Im sorry about the circumstances in a succession of western leaders and senior politicians being hosted in the middle east, the Prime Minister has picked up where President Biden left off. Israels allies are on a United Mission to show solidarity with the war on hamas terrorism while trying to keep the wider region stable. Welcome Prime Minister rishi sunak was playing his part in sending a message to iran, which supports hamas and hezbollah in neighbouring lebanon that a wider regional conflict would have consequences. Have consequences. But i also want to thank you for the support that your government has given to the families of british nationals caught up in this horror, including your efforts to release the hostages, secure release with secure their release with military support coming from its allies , israel is likely to ramp allies, israel is likely to ramp up its war on hamas with a major land, sea and air invasion of gaza in september, israel was on the cusp of negotiating peace with saudi arabia, with a visit to the region by the saudi ambassador, including a tour of the occupied west bank. So in saudi arabia, a critical meeting with the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who has made it clear that the war on hamas has derailed its new closer ties with israel. Not so. Perhaps according to downing street, which says that the Prime Minister encouraged the crown prince to use saudis leadership in the region to support stability both now and in the long term. Some experts in the long term. Some experts believe that the aim of the hamas attack on october is to end closer ties between saudi arabia and israel. While if arabia and israel. While if hamas succeeds , the west will hamas succeeds, the west will have lost a crucial player in bringing about peace in increasingly dangerous times. As increasingly dangerous times. As dan well. Dan well. Our reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv for us. And i think we can cross live to him right now for the very latest. Good morning, charlie. As i was saying to you earlier, youve been there nearly two weeks now. Whats happened in the last 24 hours or so, have things started to progress quickly. To progress quickly. Yes, indeed. Starting in the north on that border region with southern lebanon , in the last 24 southern lebanon, in the last 24 hours, we have seen a heightened exchange of missile fire between hamas, lebanese, hezbollah and the idf with helicopter gunships from this side being deployed to strike hezbollah targets on the ground. This morning, the idf has announced that a town of some 20,000 people in the north is being evacuated, which is an ominous sign of what they expect to come from that region. Weve also seen further unrest in iraq and syria. Us forces based in syrian and iraqi bases. Theyre being targeted by missile and suicide drone attacks. Ive suicide drone attacks. Ive counted some seven attacks on us forces in that region in the last 24 to 48 hours. And last night we had news of the houthis , a iran backed militia terrorist group in yemen, firing missiles. They have long range missiles. They have long range missiles. They have long range missiles in yemen from there towards northern israel that were intercepted by a Us Navy Destroyer. At the same time in the south of israel on that border with the gaza strip, the defence minister told troops last night that they can see gaza from afar, but soon they will be in there on the inside. And he said that the order for that Ground Invasion will come. Theres no walking back from that kind of rhetoric, i believe. And at the same time also in gaza, that humanitarian situation is declining and news of when those aid trucks will be allowed to enter is still waiting to be confirmed. We do know the minister, know that the Prime Minister, rishi will be in egypt rishi sunak, will be in egypt later today meeting with his correspondent, his counterpart, to discuss how they can get that aid the gaza strip. Aid into the gaza strip. Yes, i mean, a lot of headunes yes, i mean, a lot of headlines this morning in the british newspapers are saying that is that even if there is humanitarian humanitarian humanitarian, humanitarian aid allowed in, its almost too little , too late, though little, too late, though i imagine president Prime Minister netanyahu will be very enthused when he hears of the speech that President Biden gave to the americans. Has there been any reaction on politically. Reaction on politically. Yes, positive reaction. It is welcome , but the american welcome, but the american support is sort of expected in this situation. But 100 billion this situation. But 100 billion of support for both the ukraine and israel war is a significant step. What was most interesting , step. What was most interesting, i think, about that speech last night is what was missing. Those reported seven attacks on us forces in iraq and syria and us forces in iraq and syria and us forces intercepting missiles from yemen. American troops have been injured in these attacks. The pentagon have said. And there are also reports that of a us military contractor dying after a heart attack while taking shelter. Still nothing from biden on that incident. Okay. Well leave it there for the moment, charlie. Well be joining you a bit later on in the you very the program. Thank you very much. Lets now bring in the former Israeli Government spokesperson, for former Israeli Government spoke on arson, for former Israeli Government spokeon this , for former Israeli Government spokeon this. For former Israeli Government spokeon this. And for former Israeli Government spokeon this. And a for former Israeli Government spokeon this. And a veryor former Israeli Government spokeon this. And a very good more on this. And a very good morning to you. I think we can morning to you. I think we can see you there. Yes. Thank you very much. What first of all, your reaction to the sort of diplomatic moves that have been made minister rishi made by Prime Minister rishi sunak and, of course, President Biden in the last couple of days i what were seeing right now is enormous and very open backing to israel, to the idf, to the people of israel in what is a fight against hamas. And i want to be very clear to both Prime Minister sunak and President Biden are doing that distinction, which is very clear , and id love you to do it as well. Were not attacking the gazan people. Were not attacking that in any way. What we are doing is attacking hamas. And they have given very clear words. Ins and words and actions. Ins and diplomacy is always going to be about at this stage , it looks about at this stage, it looks like everybody is worried that this will spill over to them. And i hate to be the prophetess of doom. It already has gone further. We see the houthis in yemen joining in. We hear these voices. These are horrible things for all of us. But we need to because of that, try to go against the hamas terrorists. How how do we you particularly stop it, stop this sort of spiralling out of control and involving many more other countries and the terrorist forces in those countries . How do you stop it now . How do you stop it now . How do you stop it now . Isnt that one of the questions that i want to ask all of you and all of the viewers right now, how do we were looking at it in systematic looking at it in a systematic way. This is not a short term something. This is something that affects every single of that affects every single one of us. As im talking to us. And to me, as im talking to you, its as if, oh, this is israels problem and israel is responding. Hamas, in their responding. Hamas, in their terror act are trying right now. And today , friday as well, to and today, friday as well, to make sure that all of those who support palestinians and this is not about palestinians go out and attack, be it in the uk or anywhere around the world. So right now, im already saying this is not contained here. There already calling for voices around the world. And we all need to stand strong. We cannot allow these terrorists, these horrific terrorists, to define the day and to make us think that this is against palestinians or the poor people of the gaza strip. This is against hamas and terrorism , um, against hamas and terrorism, um, as it is right now , if you were as it is right now, if you were advising Prime Minister netanyahu then from what youre saying, would you advise him to go in now with that ground force that he has been threatening for nearly two weeks . Its interesting how everybody is like waiting. It has to be now. Like waiting. It has to be now. Why havent we started hamas preplanned for years. The most horrific terror assault thats ever been happening in the world. Were still burying our dead. We dont know where everybody is at. We are fighting and mourning. And if we dont do it today and if we do it tomorrow, its the only way to really get to the hostages, including british hostages. Its the only way to get to in those terror people, to those terror operatives. Thats where they are. We need to destroy this. And so thats what you would say to Prime Minister netanyahu. Say to Prime Minister netanyahu. You go in now, dont delay. You go in now, dont delay. So as i said, this isnt about youre asking about the timing. I dont care if its today or tomorrow. To me , its today or tomorrow. To me, its clear that the ground operation is not easy and there will be casualties on both sides. This isnt israel going in and mowing down. If we were going to mow down. If we were going to mow down the gaza strip, we do it from the air already. My heart can go out right now to the millions. And yes, its millions of gazans that hamas have not protected. They did a pre planned two year attack. They never built anything to protect their own people, to get water to their own people. No theyre using them as human shields. We will go in and i dont know if it will be today or tomorrow, but thats the only way to get to that depth of evil i mary eisen, thank you very much indeed forjoining us mary eisen, thank you very much indeed for joining us today. She is, of course, a retired idf colonel and former Israeli Government spokesman. So thank government spokesman. So thank you. Okay. At 722, where are we you. Okay. At 722, where are we going now . Well, back home and things are looking pretty dodgy for all of us, actually, when it comes to the weather, because a red weather warning remains in place for parts of england and scotland and residents of hundreds of homes have been urged to evacuate as storm babet batters the country. Thousands of families have lost power and are facing flooding from unprecedented amounts of rain. And we heard that a 57 year old woman has sadly died after being swept into a river in angus in scotland. Well, im joined now by weather journalist nathan rao, whos going to try and make some sense of it for us, because this is as we keep using that word, unpressed invented. But you were telling me earlier Something Like too, months worth of falling in 24 hours. Of rain falling in 24 hours. I would suspect thats what theyre at up there. Theyre looking at up there. Now, the met office, as you mentioned, issued a red mentioned, has issued a red warning rain. Now, talk warning for rain. Now, we talk about met office issuing about the met office issuing warnings when warnings quite a lot when theres they theres weather going on. They do red warnings like do not issue red warnings like so. Is for Severe Weather so. This is for Severe Weather and this is across the east of scotland for today until midday where they could see up to possibly more than ten inches of rain in parts. Thats more than a months worth a very short a months worth in a very short amount time. This the amount of time. And this is the problem with this storm because its slow moving. Its its very slow moving. Its dumping a of in a short dumping a lot of rain in a short penod dumping a lot of rain in a short period of time because its stalled country. Stalled over the country. And telling me and you were telling me earlier is just ten earlier how powerful is just ten centimetres of water . Yeah, 30cm water can yeah, well, 30cm of water can actually so this is actually move a car. So this is why scottish, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency is warning you are in warning people, if you are in the areas, dont drive the warning areas, dont drive in walk in it, stay in it, dont walk in it, stay away from coastal areas because you can that sort of floodwater fast floodwater, the fast moving floodwater, the warning danger to life warning is a danger to life warning is a danger to life warning and thats not said lightly. This sort of fast lightly. This sort of fast flowing floodwater can knock you off your feet and can move cars. It can cause landslips. We saw that in scotland about ten days ago. It was other side of ago. It was the other side of scotland. But this intense rainfall lot of rainfall can cause a lot of hazards. If youre in that hazards. So if youre in that area, wait for to pass. Area, wait for it to pass. So wheres it come from and where going and when . Right so the storm is quite a usual low pressure cyclonic weather system that from the system that comes in from the west at this time year. Its west at this time of year. Its moving the west and its moving in from the west and its going out to the northeast. Now, the bad weather last the bad weather is going to last through until 6 am. Saturday morning and it will remain unsettled until sunday. Morning and it will remain unseased until sunday. Morning and it will remain unse as etmentioned,1til sunday. Morning and it will remain unse as etmentioned,1til fproblem and as i mentioned, the problem with this storm is that its very, slow moving its very, very slow moving and its bumping an area of bumping up against an area of High Pressure to the north east of rather than High Pressure to the north east of coming rather than High Pressure to the north east of coming in rather than High Pressure to the north east of coming in from|ther than High Pressure to the north east of coming in from the than High Pressure to the north east of coming in from the west| High Pressure to the north east of coming in from the west and just coming in from the west and sweeping out quickly over 24 hours, its stalled over the country. Until country. So sit tight until sunday should be sunday day. And it should be clear then. Okay clear by then. Okay and as you said, red weather warning means danger. So dont and as you said, red weather warnthatneans danger. So dont and as you said, red weather warn that lightly. Anger. So dont and as you said, red weather warnthat lightly. Thanksio dont take that lightly. Thanks very much. You very much. Thank much. Thank you very much. Thank you. Okay. At 7 25, were going to asking , should celebrities to be asking, should celebrities stay out of politics . Were going to be debating just that after this. Right. Its just coming up very, very shortly. Itll be coming up to 730. Now, heres a really interesting one. You might like to get involved with yourself. Gb views a gbnews. Com because a letter signed by well known actors is condemning Israeli Military actions has been criticised for failing to actually mention the terror attacks that started it all off by hamas. More than 2000 actors and artists and musicians in the uk. Thats including people like Tilda Swinton , steve coogan, Tilda Swinton, steve coogan, Charles Dance and maxine peake. They signed the letter. So today were asking should celebrities stay out of politics or not . Joining me to debate this very deep question is political commentator Alex Armstrong and broadcaster and social commentator narinder kaur. Broadcaster and social commentator narinder kaur. And commentator narinder kaur. And its lovely to see both of you. Okay now, who am i going to start with . How shall i get going on this . Lets ask you, going on this . Lets ask you, alex, should they or should they not stay out of something that theyre not meant to be involved in in any way . Look, i think, you well, look, i think, you know, everyones entitled to their first their freedom of speech. First of all, ill say that first up. But celebrities get but should celebrities get involved a involved in politics is a different question. And you know, people are building know, these people are building a big influence base online and what they say carries weight and i think thats really important when were talking about political discourse, because they dont always present the facts, stated facts, as youve just stated quite that , facts, as youve just stated quite that, you quite clearly on tv, that, you know, they sometimes come out with little bit of with with a little bit of nonsense thats, you know, opinions by other elite opinions shared by other elite celebrities around its celebrities around them. Its like club and theyre like a little club and theyre not very representative of the people. Tend to find as well. People. I tend to find as well. So, know, its quite so, you know, its quite a difficult one. But you know what really grinds my gears is publicly funded celebrities, i. E. The who tend to i. E. Ones on the bbc who tend to have quite strong opinions on things for by the things but are paid for by the taxpayer. Of taxpayer. Yes, yeah, a few of them quite lately. But them quite quiet lately. But yeah, my view. Whos yeah, thats my view. And whos been yeah, thats my view. And whos beeactually, were thinking of actually, were thinking of one one. Youre one particular one. Youre probably alluding to whos been told for you to go told its okay for you to go ahead say those private ahead and say those private things to. Well things as you want to. Well i think thats quite shocking, isnt taxpayer think thats quite shocking, isnt goes taxpayer think thats quite shocking, isnt goes towardsaxpayer think thats quite shocking, isnt goes towards theirver salaries . Quite, quite good salaries, might add. And to think that might i add. And to think that tweets independ, tweets are independ, though, its got nothing do with bbc. Tweets are independ, though, its ijot nothing do with bbc. Tweets are independ, though, its i mean,|ing do with bbc. Tweets are independ, though, itsi mean, 11g do with bbc. Tweets are independ, though, its i mean, i thinkdo with bbc. Tweets are independ, though, itsi mean, i think an with bbc. Tweets are independ, though, itsi mean, i think an alex3bc. Tweets are independ, though, its i mean, i think an alex look, i mean, i think an alex look, as Charles De Gaulle famously once said, politics is far too serious a topic to for politics to be left to the politicians. And i think celebrities actually, they lend a voice. Theyve got a platform. Im joe bloggs. Whatever i write on bloggs. Whatever i write on twitter or on social media is not going to have sway. But not going to have much sway. But if a if youre if youre a if youre a celebrity and youve got a big following, you can get people to participate. Democratic participate. And the democratic process is meant for participation in. And i think its so important. Participation in. And i think its so important. Taylor swift its so important. Taylor swift famously got involved in politics in 2018. She she you know, she let off a long time. People said, dont get involved, dont get involved. Leave, leave yourself a singing, which is, yourself a singing, which is, you know, quite patronising. But i think that actually got i think that actually she got involved and a voice involved and she put a voice behind the democrats. They behind the democrats. They didnt guess what didnt win. But guess what happened . Lot youngsters happened . A lot of youngsters went there and voted and but went out there and voted and but theyre voting. We need celebrity is to actually influence participation and if they do that and may i just add, when we went to when uk got involved , involved behind involved, involved behind ukraine, suddenly was okay for celebrities to lend their voice. Celebrities to lend their voice. Its okay because were supporting ukraine. Yes, youve just a minute. This is a very, very sensitive issue. Well you know what . The ukraine one was also was also sensitive and celebrities allowed to get celebrities were allowed to get involved. But suddenly with palestine , theyre not allowed palestine, theyre not allowed to get involved. Okay the charles de well, thats the Charles De Gaulle is a great quote, but if its too serious for just left the politicians, its way too serious for celebrities to be getting involved, frankly. And, you taylor great you know, taylor swifts a great example. About example. She was tweeting about black matter, which, you black lives matter, which, you know, the charity now, which she got of got thousands and millions of donations from her tweets as a result obviously result of. Its been obviously shown to be what it is, you know, for fraudulent for a lot of but i it of fraudulent. But i think it just to show i think it just goes to show i think it actually goes to show that these celebrities are pumping virtue signalling towards charities and big. They dont big organisations. They dont know theyre talking know what theyre talking about. Theyre being told this is theyre just being told this is a you cant a great thing to do. You cant go wrong it looks like go wrong because it looks like youre trying to do good. If theyre ill informed, then its a disaster, do it its a disaster, but they do it at their career. At the peril of their career. But they can get cancelled. Responsibility. Just if youre a singer, you could responsibility. Just if youre absolutely|ger, you could responsibility. Just if youre absolutely great ou could responsibility. Just if youre absolutely great singer. D be an absolutely great singer. Doesnt mean you understand political it . Political issues, does it . But you know, correct. But you know, theyre putting career theyre putting their career on theyre putting their career on the because they believe in the line because they believe in it. Think its so it. And i think its so important to use this huge platform million platform 6 million to 10 million followers. Kardashian has followers. Kim kardashian has got involved followers. Kim kardashian has gotinvolved miscarriages followers. Kim kardashian has got involved miscarriages of got involved in miscarriages of justice shes justice in america. And shes had released from crimes had so many released from crimes they didnt and i think they didnt commit. And i think thats and people are thats fantastic. And people are learning about miscarriages of justice because Kim Kardashian lent her voice to that. So because of their standing, because they have thousands, maybe of followers , at maybe millions of followers, at least that gets them the debate in the open. But is it getting the right debate in the open . And this is the question. Kardashian the question. And Kim Kardashian is example, is another great example, someone wouldnt take someone who i wouldnt take anyones shes not anyones word for. Shes not someone whos extremely well educated, in my opinion. Educated, in my opinion. My opinion. You cant address. Is it not simply a symptom, but its symptomatic of our society. Were looking to celebrities for leadership now. And i think this is you know, politicians arent leading the way anymore. Arent leading the way anymore. I think this is symptomatic of what weve become. Instance, the lumley, for instance, at the moment about moment is campaigning about trying get elephants out of trying to get elephants out of britain. Belong in britain. They dont belong in zoos britain. Thats a zoos in britain. Thats a political issue to a certain extent, i think it is extent, isnt it . I think it is the right to have her say absolutely. As i said, complete freedom of speech. I think theres a sort of a line drawn and the royal families are quite a good job this. Saying that job of this. Im not saying that celebrities, are the head celebrities, they are the head of state after all. But but theres line where it gets theres a line where it gets very and quite very political and quite dangerous. I mean, you know, i wont mention many stars on wont mention too many stars on live tv, but some of the opinions they put out there are literally vote specific literally to vote for specific parties. Influencing parties. They are influencing the democratic process. But think letter, but i think this letter, these were pro for these celebrities were pro for pro palestine. Think its pro palestine. I think its amazing that because amazing they did that because actually correct. Actually theyre correct. And this didnt this whole line that they didnt condemn was two this whole line that they didnt conderago. Was two this whole line that they didnt conderago. It was two this whole line that they didnt conderago. It was was two this whole line that they didnt conderago. It was two was two this whole line that they didnt conderago. It was two weekso this whole line that they didnt conderago. It was two weeks ago. Weeks ago. It was two weeks ago. News is fast. News is fast. Its two weeks ago. But thats why maybe theyre war, thats why maybe theyre at war, but maybe they condemn them but maybe they did condemn them two weeks ago. But now theyre saying, hang on minute, israel is taking on a minute, israel is taking this too far now. And actually western leaders blood western leaders have blood on their i think its their hands. I think its amazing they this. Amazing they wrote this. Have striven shouldnt they have striven to that letter by to have balanced that letter by saying, understand that saying, we understand that atrocities been committed atrocities have been committed by i think did. I think i think they did. I think they in this letter, they they did in this letter, they didnt mention hamas once. No, not hamas. They did say they not hamas. But they did say they condemn of acts of condemn any kinds of acts of violence. Condemn that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i nce. Condemn that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i think condemn that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i think i condemn that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i think i think condemn that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i think i think when zmn that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i think i think when it|n that. Condemn any kinds of acts of vio|i think i think when it comes i think i think when it comes to celebrities and calling for peace, weve seen that for peace, weve weve seen that for over many generations. You know, weve festivals where they weve got festivals where they go in, they sing making go in, they sing about making world a better place. And i think okay. They are think thats okay. They are entitled sign petitions entitled to sign petitions like we think when you lend we are. I think when you lend your voice to something, they must remember how important their influence is. Okay, well, ive got to go ding time off. Thank you very much indeed for very spirited debate. Please join in on it. Gb views at gbnews. Com in a couple of moments, well talk about something almost as important as that. Do you sleep with your makeup on . No. Never know what famous pop star does. Ill tell who in headline ill tell you who in headline makers. N ext next hello again. Right. Its 20 hello again. Right. Its 20 minutes to eight already. Should we go through some of the days headunesin we go through some of the days headlines in the newspaper . With headlines in the newspaper . With me this morning, Deputy Editor of spiked fraser myers and Showbiz Reporter stephanie takyi. And its lovely to see you both again. Thank you so much. Are going quite much. But we are going quite serious. I think, to serious. I think, fraser, to start with talking about this viral video. And to do with the viral video. And to do with the campaign against anti semitism. Yes. So the campaign against anti semitism were driving around this electronic billboard through london and the billboard shows some of the some of the children whove been kidnapped, the kidnapped children by by hamas and have been taken hostage in gaza. And now whats hostage in gaza. And now whats extraordinary is that they were stopped by the police. The stopped by the police. The Police Ordered the people driving the van to turn off the billboards. They were told that billboards. They were told that they could be charged for breaching the peace, for driving around these billboards. And they were told to leave central london. Now, this is the state this is the state weve got into with speech in this country with free speech in this country where, know, talking about where, you know, talking about the a brutal , vile, the victims of a brutal, vile, anti semitic attack can land you in trouble with the police, can be seen as sort of stirring up potential violence, i mean, looking as ive just been looking as ive just been looking there, there doesnt looking there, there doesnt look as though theres anything appallingly offensive or misrepresentative about it. Absolutely not. But think in absolutely not. But i think in this of heighten ed climate this sort of heighten ed climate of tensions , i mean, people may of tensions, i mean, people may have seen other viral videos of people these posters of people seeing these posters of kidnapped children and people are tearing them down. I mean, this is the you know, this is the sort of level of hate that were dealing with here. Its just a sad state of affairs. I think, you know, over whats with past whats happened with the past few people been few weeks, people have been touched different touched in so many different ways. Sometimes you feel a ways. And sometimes you feel a bit useless because you dont know how you can help. And i feel these people feel like that these people being just wanting to being police just wanting to express and to express their solidarity and to raise , why should they raise awareness, why should they be policed for it . They havent done anything illegal. If anything, were going to see if anything, were going to see if anything, were going to see if anything, were going to be seeing more of this over the next few weeks, whether its pro palestine protests or pro israeli protests as well. I mean, if there had been anything on those posters that had been offensive or even slogans or something that was was wrong , then i can understand it. You might you might at least understand the rationality of the police, even if you. Even if you. Yeah, even if you the police, even if you. Even if you. Well,. Even if you the police, even if you. Even if you. Well, actually even if you the police, even if you. Even if you. Well, actually people you say, well, actually people should have a right to say offensive things in as offensive things in public as well. But would at least well. But you would at least understand rationality, understand the rationality, the police have tried to retrospectively was about retrospectively say it was about protecting the people, driving retrospectively say it was about proivans,| the people, driving retrospectively say it was about proivans,| thethat ple, driving retrospectively say it was about proivans,| thethat clearlyving retrospectively say it was about proivans,| thethat clearly isnt the vans, but that clearly isnt the vans, but that clearly isnt the if watch the the case. If you watch the video. Accusing the, you video. Theyre accusing the, you know, the billboards , the people know, the billboards, the people with the billboards of potentially stirring trouble. Potentially stirring up trouble. So yeah, were in a deep problem with our with our police. This this debate spiralling out of this debate is spiralling out of control in the way that its spilled out into into the uk and i think know, on the other i think you know, on the other side well, absolutely side as well, its absolutely wrong on wrong to crack down on pro palestine protests pro palestine protests pro palestine palestine pro palestine protests pro palestine palestine flags and things that. People and things like that. People have be free express have to be free to express themselves. Im im desperately upset at the way there is clearly been such hatred just waiting to be stirred up. Definitely. And it feels such a sensitive time. Ive had to actually switch off from social media because its like people want you to make a stand. And if youre opting for the other team, then youre going to be me. And you know, because its been a lot, its been a tense because i dont think as well people talk about the psychology , warfare that , the psychological warfare that goes when theres such a war. There its too much to consume for your brain when you feel like, i cant help, but i have to kind of put access. All this stuff which is going on, seasoned journalists seeing and reporters who are used to news, news, news. And theyre saying to me theyre having to switch off the radio and the television sometimes because they cannot take it all in. Its just too much. Actually too much. Its actually too upsetting. That is upsetting. And that is staggering. Yeah. Staggering. Yeah. And because it has , you know, and because it has, you know, it is much more politicised , i it is much more politicised, i suppose, in the way that say, you know, russia or ukraine is , you know, russia or ukraine is, its easier for people to pick a side, whereas here people feel that if they speak out in one way or the other, they could lose friends lose you know, upset people. And thats yeah. Upset people. And thats yeah. So it impacts us at home in a way that perhaps past or more recent wars havent. Well, ill tell you what, were just going to move very quickly on to daisy cooper, whos deputy leader of the lib dems at the moment, because , of dems at the moment, because, of course, talking about the results from those two by elections overnight might be interesting to get her perspective. So, daisy cooper, i perspective. So, daisy cooper, i think youre there. Very good think youre there. Very good morning to you. Good morning. But maybe you guys in the lib dems didnt do as well as you often do. You managed to achieve often do. You managed to achieve by elections what happened . By elections what happened . Well, clearly , we are well, clearly, we are disappointed that we didnt win the mid bedfordshire by election as you know, wed had four stunning by election wins in other parts of the country. But what i can say is that we did almost double our share of the vote in mid bedfordshire. We won the support of thousands and thousands of former lifelong conservative voters. And i think conservative voters. And i think we played an instrumental part in both defeating the conservatives in mid bedfordshire. But i also hope that well be instrumental in defeating conservatives at defeating the conservatives at the general election. The next general election. , thats the point, isnt it . I suppose. What does it tell you the greater picture of you about the greater picture of the our politics is now the way our politics is now moving on . Well, in bedfordshire , of well, in bedfordshire, of course, it was an unusual seat in that it ended up being contested by all three major parties. But contested by all three major parties. But in terms of contested by all three major parties. But in terms of when we parties. But in terms of when we look ahead to the general election, the liberal democrats will be focusing our resources on those seats where we in on those seats where we are in second to second place to the conservatives in blue wall conservatives in those blue wall seats where are the key seats where we are the key challengers and we hope very much that again win the much that we can again win the support lifelong conservative support of lifelong conservative voters to dozens those seats. The keir starmer has said. The keir starmer has said. I think overnight and various other politicians saying other labour politicians saying these two results have changed these two results have changed the scene completely. Do you think it really was that dramatic. I think whats really dramatic is the scale of the anti conservative vote. So when i was knocking on doors and this has been backed up by polls by survation, for example, we saw that there wasnt really a huge love or huge enthusiasm for love or a huge enthusiasm for the labour party, but there is huge amounts of anger the huge amounts of anger with the conservatives thats conservatives and thats why many people voted for labour, but also thousands and thousands of voters. Of lifelong conservative voters. Also decided to vote for the liberal democrats. And that liberal democrats. And that was particularly case in rural particularly the case in rural villages. And if that rural vote does switch from conservative to the liberal democrats across the country, we can see that country, then we can see that liberal democrats will make a number the next number of gains at the next general election. What i was going to say. Next is how will that change the way you fight maybe any more . By elections, but certainly general election. Certainly a general election. And you think it will and when do you think it will be . You think that these be . Do you think that these results change the prime results will change the Prime Ministers mind about he ministers mind about when he might election. In well, i cant read the Prime Ministers mind and it is obviously just in his gift to decide when the general election will be. Some people are saying it could be in may next year. Some it could some people are saying it could be october, the latest it be in october, the latest it could be would be january 25th. So knows . But i think from so who knows . But i think from the point of view of the british public, general public, i think a general election cant come soon enough. So does come, the so whenever it does come, the liberal will ready liberal democrats will be ready and ready to win many and will be ready to win as many seats the conservatives as possible. Have you spoken your have you spoken to your leader overnight . Leader overnight . No. Theres been a lot of Whatsapp Chat between liberal democrat i havent had democrat mps, but i havent had a chance to speak to ed directly. But i know that like me, be unbelievable me, he will be unbelievable proud of our candidates. Hell be the be unbelievably proud of the campaigns we campaigns that we run, that we ran positive single issue ran on positive single issue campaigns based on the nhs and our plans to tackle the cost of living crisis. But of course, like me, hell be disappointed. But proud that we doubled our share share of the vote. And looking to the general looking fonnard to the general election as possible. Okay, leave there. Okay, well leave it there. Okay, well leave it there. Thank you so much forjoining thank you so much for joining us. You. Thats daisy us. Thank you. Thats daisy cooper there. Lib dem deputy leader. But weve still got our headune leader. But weve still got our headline makers with us, frazer myers, Deputy Editor of spiked and stephanie takyi, whos our showbiz expert. What did you i always think its funny. The day after an election because everybody is trying to paint it in a completely different way. Yeah, i mean, you had greg hands on earlier on a very brave face. I have to say. He had the short stick. I think i agree with daisy coopers assessment. Actually this is not that people are suddenly flocking to labour , are suddenly flocking to labour, its that they have just had enough. Yeah. Tory government and you can see that in over the past couple of by elections where basically whichever party was in second place or whichever party was best to beat party was best placed to beat the conservatives, thats where people flocked to. People have really flocked to. So, know , in some cases so, you know, in some cases thats the lib dems in these two by elections last night, that was that was labour at and yeah, so rishi sunak has a really serious problem, especially since labour won in scotland a few weeks ago because that makes Keir Starmers job a few successes. So that makes keir successes. So that makes Keir Starmers job of winning a majority a lot easier than it might have been. I do feel sorry for rishi. I do feel like he inherited a poisoned chalice and its almost a year ago today. Yes. And i feel like its been a little too late for him because i feel like he actually has been a conservative leader who has put plans i just plans into action. But i just think the public clearly have just enough. Now and we want just had enough. Now and we want a different government. They a different government. They have, . Have, havent they . Tell us more, steph, about the 2023 mtv europe music awards. Well, theyve been cancelled , well, theyve been cancelled, child, which im quite surprised about because usually when it comes to big award shows, they like to have a Solidarity Movement with any war thats going on, but usually gives them their chance to shine. And all their chance to shine. And all the artists making all their big speeches and performances. But the organisers of this award have actually done the opposite. Theyre saying they actually want to respect whats going on. And they said actually theyve decided to cancel the event, which going to be paris which was going to be in paris next month. Which was going to be in paris next morhave had problems in paris. They have. And theyve also said thinking about said theyre also thinking about the artists, the production people be coming from people who will be coming from all the world. They all over the world. And they just its not the right just said its not the right time. Theyve been big problems in havent. In france, havent. There was a terror yeah, there was a terror attack on friday. A teacher, a School Teacher was killed horrifically. Only around three years to the week. Another School Teacher was stabbed and there was the terror attack in belgium. Now, we dont know if this is related to the fact that the leader of hamas had called for a day of jihad and for people to take up arms against against the west. Who knows . Against the west. Who knows . That will still come out. But there is obviously a very heightened tension, tense atmosphere. Various airports had atmosphere. Various airports had to be shut down in france recently. Recently. So you can see why they would be sensitive about anything. And i think if there were you know, perhaps if there were, say, a specific threats against the award ceremony, that would make i this make sense. But i find this a very worrying response. You very worrying response. You know, have to refuse to be know, we have to refuse to be terrorised because this is what they they always attack they want. They always attack you know, always attack you know, they always attack concerts , things like things concerts, things like things that give joy and life. You that give us joy and life. You know, think of the bataclan attacks, the grand concert in manchester. We cant give up our way of life or we cant stop enjoying the things that we enjoying the things that we enjoy just to were not. And these are usually very big awards. This is these this is like the staple of the awards all year round. So for me, i feel year round. So for me, i feel like the organisers hours must have been tipped off and something that we dont know about or theyre just reading the room and just realise that its not the right time for it. I think paris has always been a bit of a playground for terrorist attacks and when youre these high youre bringing all these high profile as profile people, all but as fraser says, giving in to them and we have olympics will be and we have the olympics will be in paris next year. So you know is that under threat potentially . And i think as well, terrorism is not going to go away its almost away overnight. And its almost like lived it for so like weve lived with it for so many years and are going to many years and we are going to continue it. Maybe continue to live with it. Maybe weve find better, more weve got to find better, more sophisticated ways combating sophisticated ways of combating it. It. Meanwhile, lets move on, fraser, the Health Secretary fraser, to the Health Secretary has slammed nhs bosses for wasting our money on diversity. So there its incredible actually, if youre a diversity manager in the nhs, you can often earn a lot more than Junior Doctors , sometimes even Junior Doctors, sometimes even more than consultants. So steve more than consultants. So Steve Barclay talked about an advert he saw for someone earning 90 grand a year for being a diversity, being a diversity officer. And i think , you know, officer. And i think, you know, so actually the sort of head of diversity earns more. So i think diversity earns more. So i think shes called like the head of people. Ive got some silly title. She earns more than the actual head of nhs england. Stephen swinford. So this is a huge problem in the nhs. I dont think its not just a waste of money, its actively bad. Some of things that they teach in of the things that they teach in to these diversity to staff in these diversity sessions, talking about diverse and pregnant people, not pregnant women pregnant. Yeah, yeah. The pregnant women pregnant. Yeah, yeah. The sort of gender neutral language think is very language i think is very dangerous. Dangerous not for just women, also actually, just women, but also actually, ironically , for transgender ironically, for transgender people often are sent to the people who often are sent to the wrong screenings because they, you know, theyre put on a nobody the nobody can understand the language of men or women, language list of men or women, you that doesnt align you know, that doesnt align with their biological sex. Some of things they say about of the things they say about race, think very damaging. Race, i think are very damaging. You have made you know, people have been made people nhs been made people in the nhs have been made to seminars on the evils to attend seminars on the evils of whiteness. Someone attended a seminar was told that seminar that was told that christianity racist because christianity is racist because its european. And you think , go its european. And you think, go to any church in london. Im not sure thats right. To any church in london. Im not surnlthats right. To any church in london. Im not surn it just; right. To any church in london. Im not surn it just moves away it just moves further away from dealing with from actually dealing with peoples and that is peoples health. And that is what the nhs is for and thats why we one best why we had one of the best Health Care Systems in the world. But that is dwindling. World. But that is dwindling. You a person of you know, being a person of colour, ive never been about diversity , tick boxing schemes. Diversity, tick boxing schemes. I its all about people i think its all about people being there for merit. And i just think with these kind of situations , why dont you when situations, why dont you when Junior Doctors are studying, let them study more about diversity, but actually spending the publics money to fund these courses. Im not a fan and the nhs is a diverse institute in its, you know, around i think 20 of people who work there. Bame compared with 14 of the rest of the country. Its not like there is a clear problem that they have to solve and it doesnt appear so. It doesnt doesnt appear so. It doesnt appean doesnt appear so. It doesnt appear. It doesnt appear to be that way. And yet this seems to be i think this is just the sort of default for our Public Institutions because its not just the this is an expensive sport, isnt it . Its a very expensive default. But yeah, sport, isnt it . Its a very exp not ve default. But yeah, sport, isnt it . Its a very exp not just efault. But yeah, sport, isnt it . Its a very exp not just the lt. But yeah, sport, isnt it . Its a very exp not just the nhs,t yeah, sport, isnt it . Its a very exp not just the nhs, its ah, its not just the nhs, its teaching. Its, you know, the bank england has all these bank of england has all these wacky policies. Its wacky diversity policies. Its just the just everywhere in the bureaucracy. Bureaucracy. Now we run out of now before we run out of time, because we will any time, because we do will any minute now. Yeah in 50s. Stephanie, about dolly stephanie, tell us about dolly parton. Dolly parton has come out and said she sleeps with her said that she sleeps with her makeup says shes scared makeup on. She says shes scared to in the all natural by to be seen in the all natural by her husband photographers and shes scared there could be an earthquake. And can come out looking. So she had to run for it. Yeah, middle of the night. She wants to. Glamorous. I interviewed dolly long and she dolly not too long ago, and she does look fabulous at 77. But wipe that make off dolly. Its not sleep with makeup not good to sleep with makeup on. Really. Shes done on. It isnt really. Shes done very looks amazing, very well. She looks amazing, but i think thats a more complex more complex thing thats more insecure feel you to insecure if you feel you need to keep your makeup and not be keep your makeup on and not be okay yourself. Okay with yourself. Naturally, if there were an earthquake near earthquake anywhere near where i was, want to see was, you wouldnt want to see what i look like. At three in the certainly stephanie the morning. Certainly stephanie fraser, much. Weve fraser, thank you so much. Its natural to ask why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why im making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. Americas National Security. Well, that comes as the Prime Minister continues his whistle stop tour of the middle east in a bid to attempt to prevent the israel hamas war spiralling into a wider conflict. Overnight rishi sunak met with the Saudi Crown Prince in riyadh and Charlie Peters has the latest. Charlie peters has the latest. A town in northern israel is being evacuated as this conflict escalates across the region with the us forces in iraq and syria also facing missile and drone strike. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Off then with and lets kick off then with politics. Should has politics. Should we labour has dealt a double by election blow to overturning huge to rishi sunak, overturning huge conservative to rishi sunak, overturning huge conservati and mid bedfordshire tamworth and mid bedfordshire and of course sir keir starmer has claimed that labour now has claimed that labour is now redrawing the political map by taking seats which been taking seats which had been comfortably conservative ahead of the general election. Sometime next year. Sometime next year. , in mid bedfordshire, well, in mid bedfordshire, alastair strathearn took the seat with a majority of 1192 over his tory rival, Festus Akinbusoye soy. Following his win, he told gb news he was ready to get to work just so humbled and grateful because this has been such a big campaign for me. I grew up around here. This area means so much to me and to see people across these towns and villages placing their faith in just been so in me today has just been so exhilarating. Im going to exhilarating. And im going to be working incredibly hard from tomorrow them made be working incredibly hard from tomright them made be working incredibly hard from tom right choice. Them made the right choice. Meanwhile, in tamworth, labours Sarah Edwards defeated tory Andrew Cooper by a majority of 1316. Speaking after the declaration, she said the public has had enough of cuts to Public Services tonight. The people of tamworth have voted for labours positive vision and a fresh start. Theyve sent a clear message to rishi sunak and the conservatives lives that they have had enough of this failed government which has crashed the economy and destroyed our Public Services. Earlier we spoke to conservative Party Chairman greg hands and asked him about this double defeat for the conservatives as well. Obviously, this is a very disappointing result for us, but by elections are by elections. Governments are rarely win by elections. Were obviously disappointed. A large number of conservative voters. I think , conservative voters. I think, stayed at home. The labour won the by elections, but their vote did not increase. In fact, it went down slightly in mid bedfordshire. So i do not think there was a resounding level of support for labour. But clearly we have a lot of work to do. Rishi sunak, myself, everybody making sure the conservatives get our message out better. Get our message out better. Well, joining us now for the latest on these by Election Results. Gb news is Political Editor Christopher Hope and gb News Reporter jack carson editor Christopher Hope and gb News Reporterjack carson. Editor Christopher Hope and gb News Reporter jack carson. Jack, News Reporter jack carson. Jack, i think were going to you first. Whats it been like overnight for you and what has the reaction been like up there . The reaction been like up there . Well i think for many people it would be no surprise that labour took this seat because, of course, ive been here over the past couple of weeks finding out with voters what the issues that they were voting on was, what with voters what the issues that they really voting on was, what with voters what the issues that they really importantwas, what with voters what the issues that they really important to ;, what with voters what the issues that they really important to them. was really important to them. And it seemed to match up with really the manifesto that labours edwards was labours Sarah Edwards here was putting fonnard. Lots of people concerned, probably putting fonnard. Lots of people conctheed, probably putting fonnard. Lots of people concthe construction probably putting fonnard. Lots of people concthe construction boardsbly see, the construction boards around street around me is this high street goes through £40 million goes through a £40 million redevelopment lots of redevelopment project. Lots of local here were local people here were were of course concerned as how this high street was going be high street was going to be revived. Lots of people concerned way that they concerned with the way that they had doctors. One lady told had for doctors. One lady told me had to go to burton me that she had to go to burton for the nearest best hospital. So those kind of concerns, particular resonated particular i think, resonated with with labours sarah with voters with labours Sarah Edwards. Shes got family that with voters with labours sarah edwarlin shes got family that with voters with labours sarah edwarnin thees got family that with voters with labours sarah edwarlin the nhs. Family that with voters with labours sarah edwarlin the nhs. Sheiily that with voters with labours sarah edwarlin the nhs. She worked in works in the nhs. She worked in the well. She knows what the nhs as well. She knows what its give public its like to give public service. Was key service. That was her key message. Of course message. And of course voters have come out and particularly labour voters have turned out and hen labour voters have turned out and her. She this and voted for her. She won this seat a 45 vote share. The seat with a 45 vote share. The conservatives losing losing 25 of the vote. They lost more than a 19,000 vote majority because many of their supporters stayed at home yesterday , it was a low at home yesterday, it was a low turnout, 35. So not, of course, typical to the kind of turnout you might get in a general election, but maybe indicative of how unemployed some conservative voters with the conservative voters are with the current state the government current state of the government and the conservative that and the conservative party, that they motivated they didnt feel motivated enough how enough to come out knowing how important, course, this important, of course, this by election would be for rishi sunak for the government. Sunak and for the government. But of course, speaking after she labour, was she won in labour, sarah was said that the voters here had backed her positive vision and said that this is a clear message to rishi sunak and the conservatives that theyve had enough failed government enough of this failed government , she says has failed and , which she says has failed and destroyed the services. Destroyed the Public Services. But course the impact of but of course the impact of reform uk here and voters possibly voting conservative, but going to reform is also clear as well because the votes for reform outweigh the majority that labour achieved here. So thats certainly going to be an issue for the conservatives going fonnard over the next year as we into a general as we head into a general election. And of course, keir starmer saying that wins like this in tamworth redrawing starmer saying that wins like this political orth redrawing starmer saying that wins like thispolitical map redrawing starmer saying that wins like thispolitical map. Redrawing the political map. Yeah, jack, thank you. Christopher look, huge swing to labourin christopher look, huge swing to labour in mid beds, but the turnout for, for the labour party hasnt been particularly any better and the general turnout is low and the majority is low. So will the tories be is low. So will the tories be reading anything into that . Well, thats right, steve. And as greg hands was saying there, that labours vote hasnt really moved much. Whats happened here is the tories have simply sat their hands, maybe simply sat on their hands, maybe no year ago liz no surprise. A year ago liz truss office. Of course, truss left office. Of course, rishi was appointed by mps rishi sunak was appointed by mps appointed mps, voted by appointed by mps, not voted by members a year ago. On monday , members a year ago. On monday, turnout was down by by 30, down to 35. Thats why youll be very careful reading. Big, big story into these by Election Results. But this one is certainly seismic here in mid bedfordshire to see this majority held by Nadine Dorries of 24,000 down to a labour majority of 1192 is extraordinary. We two things to say if the reform party hadnt stood a candidate there to the right of a of the tory party, if the reform party hadnt stood, the reform party hadnt stood, the tories would have won. And the tories would have won. And thats been picked up by lots of tory the right who will tory mps on the right who will think tory now must think the tory party now must must more right wing, do more must go more right wing, do more tax ideas, try and get tax cutting ideas, try and get the tory vote out. But the tory party is in a mess this morning. Ive had a text here from a tory mp i know well hes saying mp i know very well hes saying that are in shock. That colleagues are in shock. Theres ominous silence in theres an ominous silence in whatsapp groups this weekend. I should from monday should say that from monday rishi sunak will be in Prime Minister for one year. And that means after that date, letters of no confidence can go in into the minister. Lets see the Prime Minister. Lets see what happens. Okay, christopher, jack, thanks indeed. Thanks very much indeed. An interesting point, thats an interesting point, isnt letters no isnt it, that letters of no confidence juncture that confidence at this juncture that would be self destruct. It would, wouldnt it, though, ron . Ron godfrey has been in touch. Ron says last touch. Morning. Ron says last nights Election Results show that hunt are killing that sunak and hunt are killing the must the conservative party and must go. Go. Are they killing it or are they just keeping it on . Its last legs anyway, though. Adam turner says. Want to point out that although labour have won both by elections, actually 156 votes in mid actually lost 156 votes in mid beds compared to 2019 and only gained 811 in tamworth, the reality is conservative voters didnt come out to vote. Thats right, yes. And if they had, greg had said earlier himself, he admitted, and you have to say massive swing , unprecedented massive swing, unprecedented swings. Swings. And yet, if it would be, there is still a very real possibility they could be overturned again at the next general election. Do you think those two by Election Results have by Election Results really have redrawn map . Redrawn the political map . Probably a bit. Probably a bit far. But its nevertheless clearly very worrying. Clearly very worrying for the conservative party. For the conservative party. Great news for keir starmer. Well see what he has to say. I think christopher is going to talk to him a little bit later on, right . Yeah, on right yeah, well move on right now, though, as nearly 8 12 now, the us President Joe Biden addressed last night addressed Americans Last night where he tried to convince them to fund 100 billion in new spending to buy weapons and send humanity korean aid to israel and ukraine. Lets have a watch and ukraine. Lets have a watch and listen. I know these conflicts can seem far away and its natural to ask, why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. Americas National Security. American values are what make us a partner that other nations want to work with to put all that at risk. If we walk away from ukraine, if we turn our backs on israel , its just not backs on israel, its just not worth it. Thats why tomorrow worth it. Thats why tomorrow im going to send to congress an urgent budget request to fund Americas National security needs to support our critical partners, including israel and ukraine. Its a smart investment thats going to pay dividends for American Security for generations as well. Generations as well. Gaza continues to suffer more destruction. Theres now a greek destruction. Theres now a Greek Orthodox church has been hit in a strike, killing more civilians and the Greek Orthodox patriarch patriarchate patriarchate. I think thats the way you say it. Okay. If jerusalem said targeting the church constitutes a war crime and israel continues to heavily bomb gaza and hundreds of thousands of people have now fled their homes. These are the latest pictures were bringing you now from gaza that show the devastation and misery for many thousands of people. People. Well, the enclave also remains under siege with israel blocking supplies of water, electricity and fuel across the border. Border. But a deal reached with israel this week means that there is hope now that aid thats waiting in egypt can now cross the border into gaza in the coming hours. Now, israel is insisting that its only striking hamas targets in gaza, which continues to hold, we think, around 200 hostages. And amongst those are two britons today, the diplomat mission to stop the conflict spilling over between israel and other arab countries continues as the Prime Minister tours the middle east. Yesterday, mr sunak told israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the uk was proud to support israel. Proud to support israel. Well , in a proud to support israel. Well, in a moment, were going to have the latest live from our reporter in israel. But first, anne warren reports on rishi sunak mission in a war zone. Its very good to see you. Im sorry about the circumstances in a succession of western leaders and senior politicians being hosted in the middle east. The Prime Minister has picked up where President Biden left off israel allies are on a United Mission to show solidarity with the war on hamas terrorism while trying to keep the wider region stable. The wider region stable. Welcome, Prime Minister rishi sunak was playing his part in sending a message to iran, which supports hamas and hezbollah in neighbouring lebanon that a wider regional conflict would have consequences as. Israels have consequences as. Israels allies want to contain the conflict by minimising the human suffering. Suffering. We also recognise that the Palestinian People are victims of hamas to and that is why i welcome your decision. Yesterday that you took to ensure that routes into gaza will be opened for humanitarian aid to enter. But i also want to thank you for the support that your government has given to the families of british nationals caught in british nationals caught up in this including your this horror, including your efforts release the hostages, efforts to release the hostages, secure release with secure their release with military support coming from its allies , israel is likely to ramp allies, israel is likely to ramp up its war on hamas with a major land , sea and air invasion of land, sea and air invasion of gaza in september , israel was on gaza in september, israel was on the cusp of negotiating peace with saudi arabia, with a visit to the region by the saudi ambassador there, including a tour of the occupied west bank. So in saudi arabia , a so in saudi arabia, a critical meeting with the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who has made it clear that the war on hamas has derailed its new closer ties with israel. Not so , closer ties with israel. Not so, perhaps, according to downing street , which says the prime street, which says the Prime Minister encouraged the crown prince to use saudis leadership in the region to support stability both now and in the long term. Some experts believe long term. Some experts believe that the aim of the hamas attack on october is to end closer ties between saudi arabia and israel. If hamas succeeds , the west will if hamas succeeds, the west will have lost a crucial player in bringing about peace in increasingly dangerous times. As increasingly dangerous times. As dan warren gb news well, lets head to tel aviv and our reporter Charlie Peters. Morning to you, charlie. Whats happening at the moment . Well, this morning there has been an evacuate an order in northern israel from the idf for some 20,000 people in the town of kiryat shmona. This comes as northern israels Evacuation Order extended beyond the two kilometre line. And people were forced to flee there. A very ominous sign as the fighting ramps up between the idf in the north and Lebanese Hezbollah and hamas in southern lebanon. Its a sure sign, i think, an indicator and a warning of what the idf believe is likely to occurin the idf believe is likely to occur in southern lebanon in the coming days. And it comes at coming days. And it comes at a time of increased activity by Iranian Proxy Forces throughout the region. In the last 48 the region. In the last 48 hours, weve had some seven attacks on us bases in iraq and syria by almost certainly iranian aligned groups. We know that the Islamic Revolutionary guard corps, iranians, irans sorry, asymmetric special forces unit that operates throughout the world, but in particular in iraq and syria and lebanon has been supporting groups there almost certainly supporting those attacks on america forces. There have been reports of american casualties in those bases. American casualties in those bases. One last night in al tanf bases. One last night in al tanf , which is in Eastern Syria , which is in Eastern Syria, striking that location there, and also further strikes on american powers in iraq. And also last night, late last night, we had reports from the pentagon that a us naval destroyer in the red sea had intercepted missiles fired by the houthi militia in yemen. Thatis the houthi militia in yemen. That is also a significant escalation on october the 10th, the leader of the houthis said that they were to prepared join in with what they described as the Islamic Resistance towards israels war on gaza. And we are now starting to a heightened now starting to see a heightened level activity by those level of activity by those groups by iran groups supported by iran throughout the region. And that very precarious situation where americans are being targeted. Americans are being targeted. And us president joe and last night, us President Joe Biden gave his speech towards Congress Asking for some 100 billion of aid to go towards ukraine and israel. But what is ukraine and israel. But what is also particularly interesting is what he didnt talk about. He did not discuss those attacks on us forces and the activity by naval destroyer in the red sea. So a very precarious and escalating situation beyond just israel here. Its interesting as well. We were hearing earlier, charlie, that i mean, they havent even got a speaker in the house in america and until they get a speaken america and until they get a speaker, they cant even do anything about the pledge that President Biden has already made about the 100 billion. So at the moment, you could say its a bit of an empty promise. But whats been the political reaction where you are. Reaction where you are. Well, obviously , all comments well, obviously, all comments from washington are welcome at the moment, but they are kind of baked in. They anticipate support from the Biden Administration and more broadly , administration and more broadly, the American People at the moment , though, sunak moment, though, rishi sunak heading egypt to meet with heading to egypt to meet with Abdel Fattah El sisi, the president of egypt, and hes probably drawn the short straw here. Rishi sunak in terms of when to visit cairo because last night we heard from el sisi calling for mass protests against the situation in gaza. Against the situation in gaza. For the last ten years, el sisi has been doing all he can to brutally crack down on protests in egypt. There have been in egypt. There have been extrajudicial attacks on people, arbitrary detentions. But now he wants his people to flood to the streets, reflecting the level of angerin streets, reflecting the level of anger in the arab world, particularly after that explosion on tuesday night in gaza city. Rishi sunak has to go there, quell that anger , try and there, quell that anger, try and put fonnard the perspective , i put fonnard the perspective, i imagine, raised by the israelis in their version of events on tuesday night and also to tuesday night and also trying to secure access of humanitarian aid into the gaza strip. Its an incredibly difficult task for the Prime Minister, and it comes as there is more wider tension in more protests in in the region, more protests in beirut, more in the region, more protests in beirut , more protests in the region, more protests in beirut, more protests in baghdad. Last night in the baghdad. And last night in the west bank, hamas claimed that 13 People Killed and an people were killed and an israeli in clashes israeli officer in clashes between the idf and protesters there. As anger continues to bubble throughout the region, its left arab leaders very its left arab leaders with very little manoeuvre for little room to manoeuvre for because of the level of rage and violence expressed by their people. Since incident, as people. Since that incident, as we anticipate that likely Ground Invasion onto the gaza strip. Invasion onto the gaza strip. Okay, charlie, thanks very much indeed. Okay, charlie, thanks very much indeed. Ill okay, charlie, thanks very much indeed. Ill tell you what much indeed. Ill tell you what really worries me about all well, the spread of it and the factif well, the spread of it and the fact if youve got hezbollah fighting on one, youve got hamas, hezbollah , and youve got hamas, hezbollah, and youve got the houthi lot from from yemen, a lot of that all backed by iran. Youve got syria backing, a lot of which is itself backed by russia. They all just want the destruction of israel , which the destruction of israel, which obviously america predominantly wouldnt let happen in. And we were talking about the possibility of world war iii with russia and ukraine. And now you look at this where you think it could certainly escalate into a much, much, much bigger conflict. Conflict. And thats why i thought it was interesting and important that President Biden made that point to his people , because we point to his people, because we know theres always been criticism from the American People we get people saying why do we get involved other wars that are involved in other wars that are so far from us . But he so far away from us . But he said, these seem far said, i know these wars seem far away, they very away, but they are very important. Away, but they are very important. And thus you can see how a how a war becomes a world war if youre not careful. I justitis war if youre not careful. I just it is very frightening at the moment. I wonder where we go. I was sent a picture. In fact, im to going hold it up for you this was actually my mother sent me this. Oh and its there you go. This. Oh and its there you go. And if youre listening on the radio, let me describe it. And its a jew. Its camera three, which runs camera three. There you go. There you go. And it is an israeli and an arab. Thats an israeli and an arab. Thats a sort of as close as we can put it, very obvious. So actually, from their headdresses. Yeah, too old. Too old fellas sat down in the street on little plastic chairs , just having a plastic chairs, just having a conversation and the sort of caption was, why isnt the world like this . Yeah and it should. And its a genuine its not a posed picture, its just a genuine could be genuine picture. It could be from years ago. Why genuine picture. It could be fr the years ago. Why genuine picture. It could be fr the world years ago. Why genuine picture. It could be fr the world not ars ago. Why genuine picture. It could be fr the world not likergo. Why genuine picture. It could be fr the world not like that . Why is the world not like that . I dont know. Well, i was saying earlier that i just dont understand why there seems to be such bitterness and hatred around thats just waiting to be stoked and stirred up occasionally and out it comes in our cities, in our towns. And i dont understand it. People really want to respond and to hate. People want to get angry and its crazy. We should you know, you might not like President Biden. You might not like what he does and he like what he does and what he says, but actually what he said about revenge anger and about rich revenge and anger and fury and he was aiming that at the israeli is saying, dont let that overtake everything was actually quite powerful. I thought he made a very good speech actually. There was an earlier clip of him on the press on on presumably air force one coming home and they were filming him and he was saying something. And again, he looked like a very old man who didnt really understand what he was saying. There in the oval saying. But there in the oval office, giving a powerful office, giving a very powerful speech, think, and pledging speech, i think, and pledging 100 | if hell 100 billion, i wonder if hell get through. But its a lot get it through. But its a lot of money. Theres a lot i dont know why they get it from. No but anyway, look, any thoughts on that . Wed to love see what you have to say about all of that. Lets have a look at some of the other stories heading into our newsroom this morning at 824. Not as im expecting not as heavy as im expecting through but because its through today, but because its coming the heavy coming so close to the heavy rain weve seen recently, it could some further issues could cause some further issues elsewhere across england, wales and northern a drier and northern ireland, a drier picture , scattering of picture, but a scattering of showers temperatures is a showers and temperatures is a little bit above average for the time year. Little bit above average for the time year. Its rough, rough , time of year. Its rough, rough, some of you terrible. I many homes with the evacuating in north london 100 that ladys died hasnt she. Yeah. So please be careful. Red weather warnings mean danger i now were going to have look at the sport for you as england prepare to take on south africa. Prepare to take on south africa. Hows that funny about that . Hows that funny about that . Well, i know i just sort of think i cant hold out a lot of hope, but you never know. So semi final of the Rugby World Cup paul coyte will be bringing his optimism to the studio in just moment. Good morning. Its 831. This is breakfast with stephen and anne. Right time to go through all the latest sports and paul coyte was here just a couple of hours ago bringing me right up to date with everything thats happening in the rugby world. Were all there then . So were all there then . Yeah. Have to fill yeah. Well just have to fill stephen in. Yeah, i was listening on the radio with you and just nod. Yeah, and ill just nod. Yeah, absolutely. Tonight. Well, absolutely. Its tonight. Well, theres two semi finals the theres two semi finals in the rugby is Rugby World Cup. First one is tonight, new zealand Rugby World Cup. First one is tonighiargentina. New zealand versus argentina. Its springbok face bok. Its the springbok face bok. Oh, no, thats the other thing. Oh, no, thats the other thing. Face off the the springbok face off the face the springbok face of the springbok off spnngbok face of the springbok off springbok off the springbok off. Yeah. But tonight, new zealand versus argentina. So argentina, a of surprise surprise a bit of a surprise surprise package. Met england , managed package. We met england, managed to beat argentina in the pool stage and argentina did beat new zealand in christchurch of all places as well just last year because 2022 they didnt have a very good run. And this is the all blacks. Of course, they know its the greatest rugby side of all time. Everybody knows that. Did theres lot of did you know theres a lot of side here with the all blacks shirt. Its treated with such incredible respect because if you disrespect the actual shirt, you disrespect the actual shirt, you disrespecting the all blacks, youre disrespecting the country as well. And it was sean fitzpatrick, i heard say this is that once i think it was in the dressing room, someone put the shirt on the floor and silence in the room. You cannot do. No, in the room. You cannot do. No, this is shirt. Its not a koran. Its not a koran. Its not a koran. I kind of feel the same way. Its the shirt. But no, but thats the way they respect the all blacks. Thats the way, you know, because of course they do the haka beforehand. But if the shirt hits the floor, its like how disrespect shirt disrespect so it should it should be a so but it should it should be a new zealand win tonight. It should be a new zealand win tonight. And it should be a south african win tomorrow. Lets be honest. Lets be honest. Lets be lets be honest about to say it. I heard you saying that im going to come in and be very confident about the whole but, you know, whole situation. But, you know, i before the i always get hyped up before the big especially its big games, especially if its unlikely. Then you think, unlikely. And then you think, you theres a chance. You know what, theres a chance. Course, i love that so of course, i love that when they play the lottery, its exactly you remember. When they play the lottery, its exa the you remember. When they play the lottery, its exa the first you remember. When they play the lottery, its exa the first ever remember. When they play the lottery, its exa the first ever lottery. Yer. When they play the lottery, its exa the first ever lottery. You the first ever lottery. You think its going to be me . No, it wasnt me. But for example, my son won £200 in that first ever lottery. My son won £200 in that first ever lotterythought thats how it and he thought thats how it was be. We all thought, was going to be. We all thought, wow, this is this is good. Again, week, other again, next week, any other wins . Not since 130 years. No, not since 130 years. Nothing since then. Owen farrell, england captain, farrell, the england captain, hes talking about hes been talking about the rivalry. And i mentioned rivalry. And also i mentioned with talking about with you and is talking about not getting their own back on south africa from the final and whether theres going to thats going to give that extra going to give them that extra push. Nonsense. The big push. Its nonsense. The big push. Its nonsense. The big push the youre playing push is the fact youre playing in the world cup semi final. Owen farrell mentioned this. I think can hear the think we can hear from the england captain, farrell england captain, owen farrell this to say, as you this way. Have to say, as you said a lot, a lot said in four years, a lot, a lot a lot happens rugby, a lot a lot happens in rugby, a lot happens a week here. Happens in a week here. So were excited at the opportunity thats in front of us. We feel like weve weve obviously changed as a team. I imagine south africa have feel like theyve changed over over four years as well. So we understand what what task is in front of us. Look, were going to come back to you, paul. Okay. Weve got to cut in because we just want to go to mid bedfordshire because sir keir starmer is reacting labours double reacting to labours double by election. By election victory. I want to hand over to the man whos made it. What a fantastic candidate. What a fantastic. He has not what a fantastic. He has not only won here, hes made history here in the last 24 hours. What an incredible achievement already. And thank you to all of you for doing all that hard work, for being such a brilliant team. This was such a hard fight. It was such a big majority. It was a three way fight every single conversation , fight every single conversation, every vote that you persuade to come across to us was work that youve done on behalf of this constituency for a better future. So thank you to all of you for having that positive case that we took out there. This is an incredible night in politics, an incredible morning , politics, an incredible morning, an incredible result here for so many reasons. It is clear that many reasons. It is clear that that the voters here have turned their back on a failed tory government. Theyve had enough of the decline of the last 13 years and they are crying out for change, positive change that the labour party can bring them positive change that a changed labour party can bring them, build that economy so it raises Living Standards for everywhere across the country, not just rebuilding our nhs, but taking it fonnard so that its fit for the future. The future. Oh well, there you go. Future oh well, there you go. Future i think he was going to say, yeah, yeah, yeah. Theres a missing word. Theres a missing word. Send in your ideas. Gb views at gb views. Com and understandable optimism there from keir starmer. Terrible picture quality. Its all literally just coming. Apologies for that. Well get a cleaned up version for but you know, look for you. But you know, look there, nine, there, theyre on cloud nine, arent not huge swings. Arent they . Not huge swings. The last time they saw a swing like just before the like that was just before the 1997 like that was just before the 199 yeah, like that was just before the 199yeah, and a long time yeah, and thats a long time ago now. And when labour swept and thats when labour swept to power. So i wonder read into that will more that that what you will more on that coming up. Paul, what should we what do we what we round off what do we what do we round off we want to see happiness. What do we what do we round off we we|t to see happiness. What do we what do we round off we we |t to see see piness. What do we what do we round off we we |t to see see a ness. What do we what do we round off we we|t to see see a swing to the we want to see a swing to the england side tomorrow against south the odds are south africa. All the odds are against but there is a against us. But there is a chance. And we do go through chance. And if we do go through to so thats tomorrow to the final so thats tomorrow night. Versus south night. England versus south africa. And its new zealand against tonight. Against argentina tonight. Rugby world. World cup semi finals. Quickly, youve got just very quickly, youve got 30s world cup because 30s cricket world cup because thats versus south thats england versus south africa. Is england versus africa. It is england versus south africa. Have the importance doesnt have the importance yet. Pretty important. But yet. It is pretty important. But they games, it runs they play so many games, it runs for long. Were not for so long. So were not a knockout stage yet, but effectively , you know, if effectively, you know, if england or south africa, whoever loses is to going make it very difficult for themselves to get to the semi finals. So a little earlier on in the competition, as far as theyre concerned, but it is extremely important. But i fancy us more than i do probably in the rugby, but double would be great. Yeah, double double. Yeah, double a double. Yeah, double a double. Ill with the double ill go with the double spnngbok ill go with the double springbok yeah. Yeah springbok double. Yeah. Yeah thank thanks thank you, katie. Thanks very much. Pleasure katie. Yes much. Pleasure sports yes much. Pleasure sports people. Always something. Oh, katie. Something. Oh, or katie. Thats twitter handle , thats his twitter handle, isnt it . Katie . You see. Oh go on. Is it record on. Thats what i am. Yeah. I am. Yeah. His old man. His old man. Okay, time out. Its 838. Coming up. None of us like coming up. None of us like having to pay a bill at the end of a meal in a restaurant. But would you fake a heart attack to get out of it . Well be looking at a story about that and more in headline coming up. N ext next 842 very nearly. This is breakfast with stephen and anne, right. Right. Shall we go through some of the headline makers . Deputy editor of spiked fraser myers joins us. And also, of course, stephanie teti, the one and only. Oh , theres only one, oh, theres only one, stephanie fraser. Shall we look, lets kick off with this viral video. Should we . And its all to do with why Just Stop Oil kicking off about the bibi stockholm. I think that is the great mystery. I mean weve seen Just Stop Oil protests some very random things in recent months. You know, weve seen them disrupt the snooker, seeing them disrupt the snooker, seeing them disrupt the snooker, seeing them disrupt the performance of Les Miserables now theyre miserables and now theyre disrupting the transportation of migrants to the bibby stockholm ship. And interestingly, for this one, they actually their barge references the ship. It says no more, no more prison barges. Now, i mean, i understand why why people would be upset about the condition in which Asylum Seekers are are housed. Thats perfectly, perfectly reasonable. But it perfectly reasonable. But it does seem a bit of an odd campaign for just stop does seem a bit of an odd campaign forJust Stop Oil does seem a bit of an odd campaign for Just Stop Oil to get involved in. And youd think also logically , you know, oil is also logically, you know, oil is pretty necessary Just Stopping Oil is not a good idea. And its very necessary for people who are migrants who are migrating from other parts of the world. You know, if were going to take refugees in from gaza, for instance, which we might do in the in the coming months, theyre not going to travel here by horse. No so i dont understand the confluence of these two. Dinghies they came whatever dinghies they came over channel in whatever over the channel in or whatever would been powered by would have been powered by powered would have been powered by povsoed would have been powered by povso why do they think they are so why do they think they are fighting in for migrants interests . I do not know. That interests . I do not know. That is a mystery that is yet to be resolved. I just want to campaign or just want to disrupt. I think they just keep on making a spectacle of themselves and such as this. I cant and issues such as this. I cant imagine how the migrants that were there felt at seeing that. I dont think they would have felt comfort by that at all and still it hasnt changed their destination. Theyve just been delayed on their trip to the bibby stockholm thats just caused irritation to them and to the driver and to locals. Driver and to the locals. Absolutely up with the absolutely fed up with the whole thing. Yeah so we have a bit of david walliams, controversial of course, because if i had to leave bgt. Leave bgt. Yes. He stepped down in 2020 as a judge. No no, no. He stepped down in 2022. But the guardian ran a piece of recordings that were based of him making derogatory comments about two of the contestants. This sexual comments as well. And hes suing the Production Company fremantle. And now in company fremantle. And now in some of the court papers that have been revealed, it says actually fremantle knew about these recording things and they had actually still offered him £1 million contract. But he suing them for data breach of protection. Hes also saying protection. Hes also saying that, you know , he he was led to that, you know, he he was led to have suicidal thoughts when he lost his job. So its very much turning ugly in this case. It is. Im very surprised. I didnt know he was suing them. Didnt know he was suing them. Yeah, it seems under the circumstances, you think you just let it slide . I was going to say doing something which was unacceptable and meant that they wanted to sack him, him being sacked. And hes now saying that the being sacked caused him such distress that hes had Mental Health problems, but he shouldnt have done what he did in first place. In the first place. Thing is, i think but the thing is, i think there culture at bgt where there was a culture at bgt where they actually all saying they were actually all saying stuff. Fact that hes stuff. So the fact that hes been basically the fall out guy, hes one thats had to step hes the one thats had to step down. They offered him a contract, they were happy to stand by him before it became, you know, Media Attention about this. So to be honest, i think this. Soto be honest, i think hes got a chip on his shoulder and money thing. His his and its a money thing. His his earnings dropped earnings have dropped significantly. And then it also asks us about things about cancel culture once youve been cancelled from one of the biggest entertainment shows on itv. Work do you have itv. What work do you have coming up for you next . I mean, you can see its obviously a money thing. Yes yeah. Yeah. The get rich . Do the lawyers get rich . Do the lawyers get rich . Its a different world, isnt it, the of us, you just it, for the rest of us, you just have to take it on the chin. If it was one of for us asia, you. You dont strike me as a man who would shy from paying the would shy away from paying the bill a restaurant. Bill at a restaurant. Course not. But this of course not. But in this story, this has found an story, this man has found an ingenious to get out of ingenious way to get out of paying ingenious way to get out of paying the bill. Hes a lithuanian living in spain, paying the bill. Hes a lith he|ian living in spain, paying the bill. Hes a lith he goes living in spain, paying the bill. Hes a lith he goes into iving in spain, paying the bill. Hes a lith he goes into restaurants. N, paying the bill. Hes a lith he goes into restaurants. He but he goes into restaurants. He pretends to be a russian tourist so that so that people dont, so that not that he can pretend not to understand people. Then he understand people. And then he racks a big bill. Usually racks up a big bill. Usually ordering he likes his whiskies, for. And then he for instance. And then he pretends a heart attack. Pretends to have a heart attack. And he does this really dramatic thing where you know, thing where he, you know, completely over acts it. But hes got away with it. Well, he hasnt got away with it now. Hes been hes been caught up. Done it many times. Hes done it many times. Hes done it many times. Hes done it many times. Hes done it many, many times where hes basically, you know, pretended ill, even had, pretended to be ill, even had, you medics come take you know, medics come and take him from the scene so that him away from the scene so that he can out of paying the he can get out of paying the paying he can get out of paying the payso he can get out of paying the pay so terrible, he can get out of paying the payso terrible, comes the so terrible, comes to the restaurant, eats an enormous meal, doesnt pay for it, has a heart attack, goes home an ambulance. Yeah, Something Like that. Yeah. Yeah. And it again and again and does it again and again and again. And does it again and again ancand in. And does it again and again ancand hes absolutely fine. And hes absolutely fine. Hes attack. Hes not having a heart attack. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. He reminds me of the little boy who wolf because one boy who cried wolf because one day might actually have day he might actually have a heart attack no one will heart attack and no one will actually seriously. Actually take him seriously. Theyll this theyll be like, is this another joke . Yeah. Theyll be like, is this another jok tellah. Theyll be like, is this another jok tell you what, you cant have tell you what, you cant have a favourite restaurant because you to the same you cant go back to the same place twice. You cant if you forgot. Yeah. Tried it there last week. Oh, well, you know, that makes me angry, actually. Makes me really angry, actually. Its well im glad its just like. Well im glad theyve him. Its crazy. Theyve caught him. Its crazy. Yeah, absolutely crazy. People will and the lengths people will go to scam, you know, just £60 or whatever it there. Extraordinary. Maybe having very well, maybe hes having very expensive whiskies and things and its expensive whiskies and things and its hundreds pounds. Yeah. Think, think yeah. I think, i think theres like 60, £70 was his average so much average bill so its much between £70. The sort of between 60 and £70. The sort of average bill which is not outrageous. You know, thats not that much money. No. That much money. But one person that he just sits his own and tucks sits down on his own and tucks in be a couple of whiskies. Its quite well fed. Its quite well fed. Yes, exactly. Stephanie takyi sorry. Shall we have a look at. Whats this, steph, about homes and businesses is in court . Yeah, theres a lot of videos onune yeah, theres a lot of videos online which have showed that, you know, the storm has taken its toll in cork in ireland where some businesses have been totally flooded and damaged and devastated by the storm. Oh, its i always get scared with what Mother Nature can do. Yes you just think you just dont see these things coming. And then to have to pick your business back up from such a devastation already and already hard times , its quite heartbreaking. Even on the physical side. Ive been around houses that have flooded and talked to owners and things and you go in and you sort of think, i wouldnt know where to begin, you know, on the cleanup. No. And you dont think it will happen you or your will happen to you or your business. I think as well, business. And i think as well, people always underestimate the power of storms, especially when youre in london and when you get flooded. Get flooded. Its not clean water that comes home your comes into your home or your shop whatever. So the clean shop or whatever. So the clean up is huge and its very smelly and difficult. And what can and very difficult. And what can you except chuck you do except just chuck everything that seems everything away . And that seems such a terrible waste. Does. It does. It does. Does. Look, were going to it does. Look, were going to leave there. Dont go leave it there. Dont go anywhere we come to anywhere in case we come back to you, which we might do. But fraser, stephanie, for now, thank indeed. Thank you very much indeed. Lets weather lets stick with our weather theme, we . Because as a theme, should we . Because as a red warning is still in red weather warning is still in place for parts of england and predominantly scotland, and people of have people in hundreds of homes have been evacuate as storm been told to evacuate as storm babet the country. Babet batters the country. Yes. In fact, its thousands of families lost power of families whove lost power and facing flooding from and theyre facing flooding from unprecedented of rain. Unprecedented amounts of rain. And as you will have heard, a 57 year old woman died yesterday after being swept into a river in angus in scotland. Well, lets cross now to our gbs news scotland. Reporter tony maguire, whos actually in the town of brecon, which has been evacuated over flooding. Hello there, flooding fears. Hello there, tony. Tell us more. Tony. Tell us more. Good morning. Certainly, it looked a little bit sketchy of whether wed even be able to get into the town of breaking this morning. But indeed, on our third attempt, we managed to get in and we made our straight in and we made our way straight to which is the community to here, which is the Community Campus at the top of the hill of brecon, past those flooded streets down at the bottom. Now im joined here by the director of infrastructure for brecon , of infrastructure for brecon, graham daly, or sorry for angus, should i say tell me , how is the should i say tell me, how is the situation developed overnight from the pictures that we last saw yesterday as we had the modelling . Well , as the modelling modelling . Well, as the modelling had predicted, it was for the river water level to significantly rise and it did breach our flood defence around about 4 00 this morning. And as a result, those morning. And as a result, those that had not been been evacuated or had chosen not to leave their homes, we were left in a situation where it was a rescue operation. Ian and our multi agency response, working with scottish fire and rescue with scottish fire and rescue with police scotland, with our coast guards, really kicked in to try and prioritise those in greatest need. Weve had a lot of people coming in overnight to arrest centre where were standing here, where were doing our very best, including our volunteers and our staff working here overnight to look after the people who are coming in. So it is unprecedented what we are seeing in terms of the water level. It really is an exceptional, extreme event. The exceptional, extreme event. The flooding that is impacting us here in brecon. And it has here in brecon. And it has unfolded as we thought it would overnight. And we are just overnight. And we are just activating our plans accordingly i now, obviously, those flood defences, i believe, are built for about 3. 8m rise in the river here at the river south esk and modelling from sepa suggested it would be around five metres, which explains the increase scenes down at the river front. Scenes down at the river front. So for those who did make the choice to leave their homes , choice to leave their homes, what is the mood like generally among among those that have come to decided to spend the night at the rest centre and so obviously very challenging. Very challenging. And there are people in distress and saying that i think credit to the staff and the residents who came here who have done their very best, who have really just supported each other at the rest centre. So theres at the rest centre. So theres definitely a feel of a, you know, a very challenged atmosphere, but at the same time people are pulling together and supporting each other and as i said, just a pay credit to people who have came here under very difficult circumstance. And very difficult circumstance. And as i said, the staff, which includes many volunteers who have really worked very long hours overnight to look after the welfare and needs of the people have been arriving. People who have been arriving. And i guess the question on everyones mind is what happens next . Is it too early to say . Next . Is it too early to say . And you know, when storm babett hopefully leaves scotland at some point in the next few hours, we are still around four hours, we are still around four hours from the end of the red weather warning. What is the next stage in the plans for towns like brecon and tannadice that have been struck really hard . Hard . And as you said , the storm, and as you said, the storm, bob, its very much still with us. The bob, its very much still with us. The red weather warning, which is a risk to life , is which is a risk to life, is still live until 12 midday today and then thereafter , theres an and then thereafter, theres an amber weather warning. And so theres a lot more rain and extreme Weather Forecasted for us. So obviously, an immediate priority is, as i said, it is about prioritising risk to life and making sure everyone is okay. The i mentioned there, its really unprecedented what we are seeing there. Obviously will be a significant challenge and major exercise in terms of the clean up and in terms of how we respond if something similar, similar as how weve responded to this emerged. Nc we will do to this emerged. Nc we will do it with our partners , multiple it with our partners, multiple agencies that are involved right now. And all i could say at this now. And all i could say at this stage is we will endeavour our very, very best to respond as quickly and as effectively as we can. And just i guess , finally, and just i guess, finally, you know, the as director of infrastructure, have you any thoughts on kind of the investor in the 3. 8 . Was that a sensible decision at the time . Have you any thoughts now that perhaps looking ahead into the future , looking ahead into the future, you know, further money needs to be spent on flood Defence Systems . Systems . As yeah. Angus comes to like many other councils, you know , many other councils, you know, we have invested very heavily in our flood defences. What i would say that there has been incidences in recent years where those flood defences have actually prevented a flooding and what weve seen as i said really is unprecedented. And in really is unprecedented. And in terms of what further investment, i think obviously thats a bit early to really comment on that. Well, graeme, thank you so much. Youre really are doing a stand up job and i imagine when the dust has settled from this situation that the residents here in brecon will be really thankful for your presence. Yes. Thankful for your presence. Yes. But back to you in the studio. But back to you in the studio. Lovely. Tony thank you very much indeed. Seeing those pictures makes you just want to go home and hide under the duvet, doesnt it . Yeah, it does. It does. Look, were down to 30s and i just want to touch on this, steph. Its in the sun. Yeah. Paul ogrady. What a way to go. He was a much loved entertainer by the whole nation. And theres been whole nation. And theres been a Memorial Service to remember him. But his husband , andre him. But his husband, andre postero, revealed that he smoked a cannabis joint before he died and then he peacefully passed away. Away. That is absolutely him. That is absolutely him. I think that is such a showbiz way to go. Showbiz way to go. Its lovely. And actually, you know, i hope he did die a little bit high and a little bit sleepy and happy. Yeah, very fitting for paul ogrady. O grady. Absolutely. Ogrady. Absolutely. Its hard to argue against that in your final moments, steph fraser, good to see you this morning. Very much. Very much. Very much indeed. Very much indeed. Weve got more on the politics and labours by election good morning. Nearly 9 00 on friday, the 20th of october. And these are the stories weve been covering on breakfast today. It covering on breakfast today. It is clear that the voters here have turned their back on a failed tory government , have turned their back on a failed tory government, a double by election defeat for the tory party as labour secures a seismic victory in tamworth and mid bedfordshire with the Prime Minister facing calls for an early general election, well be getting live reaction in tamworth. Tamworth. Take a 19,000 conservative majority here to labour as they overturn with a 20 swing. Keir starmer says labour are redrawing the political map. Redrawing the political map. Whichever way you look at it, this has been a catastrophic night for the conservatives. Which ministers are going to have a very difficult time explaining away. Now the big question is whens the next general election . General election . Also this morning, we cant let the terrorists win. President biden pledges an unprecedented 100 billion in aid to help with the war efforts in israel and ukraine. I know these conflicts can seem far away. Its natural to seem far away. Its natural to ask, why does this matter to america . So let me share with you why making sure israel and ukraine succeed is vital for Americas National security. Americas National Security. And thats us Prime Minister rishi sunak continues his whistle stop tour of the middle eastin whistle stop tour of the middle east in an attempt to prevent the israel hamas war spiralling into a wider conflict. Now, after more than 2000 actors and musicians signed a letter condemning what they call israeli war crimes, we debated whether celebrities should stay out of politics. If you miss that Fiery Exchange and watch it on youtube back home, storm babet batus, scotland as a woman is swept to her death and hundreds are told to evacuate their homes. Its a red weather warning now in place for parts of britain and the cost of living crisis is showing no sign of easing. Anytime soon. Research shows that more than half of us have switched from a favourite brand to a more standard brand because of the cost. So can retailers of the cost. So can retailers rely on loyalty . Well, you dont usually buy the same thing again and again, do you . So there is no loyalty with christmas shopping, things like. Like that. Mentioned a brand, you know i mentioned a brand, you know. I mentioned a brand, you know , eights and all that, all , after eights and all that, all that sort of thing. Would you go for those or a different brand of wafer thin mint . I dont know. Thats the trouble well get in. Get away with you cant get away with everything, you . Everything, can you . Oh, dear. Anyway look, our main news this labour main news this morning, labour has double by election has dealt a double by election blow sunak by blow to rishi sunak by overturning huge conservative majorities in tamworth and mid bedfordshire shire six. Starmer claimed labour was redrawing the political map by taking seats which had been comfortably conservative ahead of the general election, expected sometime next year. This is what the labour leader had to say in the last few minutes. Minutes. This is an incredible night in politics. Its an incredible morning , an incredible result morning, an incredible result here for so many reasons. It is here for so many reasons. It is clear that that the voters here have turned their back on a failed tory government. Theyve failed tory government. Theyve had enough of the decline of the last 13 years and they are crying out for change, positive change that the labour party can bnng change that the labour party can bring them positive change that a changed labour party can bring them building that economy so that it raises Living Standards for everywhere across the country as well. In mid bedfordshire, Alistair Strathearn took the seat with a majority of 1192 over his tory rival Festus Akinbusoye, following his win, he told gb news he was ready now to get to work. Work. Im just so humbled and grateful because this has been such a big campaign for me. I grew up around here. This area means so much to me and to see people across these towns and villages their faith in villages placing their faith in me has just been so me today has just been so exhilarating. Im going to exhilarating. And im going to be working incredibly from be working incredibly hard from tomorrow they made tomorrow to show them they made the right choice. Then meanwhile and then meanwhile in tamworth, labours edwards tamworth, labours Sarah Edwards defeated tory Andrew Cooper by a majority of 1316. Speaking after the declaration, she said the pubuc the declaration, she said the public has had enough of cuts to pubuc public has had enough of cuts to Public Services. Tonight the people of tamworth have voted for labours positive vision and a fresh start , but theyve sent a clear start, but theyve sent a clear message to rishi sunak and the conservatives that they have had enough of this failed government which has crashed the economy and destroyed our Public Services. Services. As earlier we spoke to conservative Party Chairman greg hands to ask him about this double defeat for his. Party double defeat for his. Party well, obviously this is a very disappointing result for us, but by elections are by elections as governments rarely win by elections, were obviously disappointed. A large number of conservative voters, i think, stayed at home. The labour won the by elections, but their vote did not increase. In fact , it went down slightly in fact, it went down slightly in mid bedfordshire. So i do not mid bedfordshire. So i do not think there was a resounding level of support for labour. But clearly have a lot of work to clearly we have a lot of work to do. Rishi sunak myself, everybody making sure the conservatives get our message out better. Out better. Well, joining us now for the latest on these by Election Results, our Political Correspondent olivia utley and our reporter jack carson. Jack, shall i come to you first . But whats it been like overnight there . A resounding labour success. Yeah well, it certainly felt like it was possibly in the air, closer and closer to this by election yesterday. It felt like labour were getting more and more confident. Keir starmer visited this constituency last week, perhaps sensing that victory was in sight. And of sensing that victory was in sight. And of course sensing that victory was in sight. And of course last sensing that victory was in sight. And of course last night Sarah Edwards was elected as the mp for this area, 45. 8 vote share here, increasing the laboun share here, increasing the labour, increasing increasing their votes as well. The turnout was of course down from what you typically see in a general election down to 35. But the fact is lots of conservative voters in this constituency simply stayed at home. Its not what the conservatives would be hoping for of course, as they lose this seat because tamworth is very historically gone with the way the country votes. Of the way the country votes. Of course in with blair and brown it was labour and then when cameron formed that Coalition Government in 2010, it went to conservative and has been conservative ever since. So its some people saying this seat is very much a litmus test for how the might be the country might will be voting. Labour certainly not voting. But labour certainly not resting laurels because resting on their laurels because of the new mp here knows of course the new mp here knows that years time she could that in a years time she could be this electorate again be facing this electorate again and to try and retain her and having to try and retain her seat. And having to try and retain her seat. Of course, this was not seat. Of course, this was not one of the seats which labour , one of the seats which labour, as pat mcfadden in the last hour has really on their has said was really on their radar, not not certainly with a majority 19,000, but it is majority of 19,000, but it is the case that theyve won this seat today. Of course, edwards saying in her acceptance speech that the voters had backed labours positive vision for the country and said that this is a clear message to rishi sunak and the conservative says that theyve had enough this, theyve had enough of this, failed government. Keir starmer saying that labour are saying that the that labour are redrawing the political of redrawing the political map. Of course doesnt seem that long course it doesnt seem that long ago back in 2019, boris ago that back in 2019, Boris Johnson all those red johnson winning all those red wall he was redrawing wall seats as he was redrawing the political maybe the political map. So maybe theres redrawing on the political map. So maybe the of; redrawing on the political map. So maybe the of course, redrawing on the political map. So maybe the of course, as rawing on the political map. So maybe the of course, as this1g on the political map. So maybe the of course, as this seat on the political map. So maybe the of course, as this seat , on as, of course, as this seat, amongst of course, is amongst others, of course, is tackled by both parties across the country. The country. Okay, jack, thank you. You mentioned pat mcfadden, labours National Campaign coordinator. He joins us now. And very good morning to you. You must be delighted by what happened , but delighted by what happened, but is it really redrawing the political map. Political map. Well, good morning. And im sorry. Ive got to keep my sorry. Ive got to keep my finger in my ear here. Were having a few tech problems here at near parliament, but well keep going. And were delighted by the results last night. And these were two constituencies which, as your report said, were not really they werent on our target list. Tamworth, for target list. Tamworth, for example, was the 57th safe conservative seat in the country up until the last night. Conservative seat in the country up until the last night. So this up until the last night. So this is a major setback for the government and for their message that somehow the country needs change. And the answer to that change. And the answer to that change is five more years of the conservatives. The country does need change, but it will only get it with the labour party. And thats what the voters of tamworth and mid bedfordshire were saying in the poll yesterday. Today. Yesterday. Today. Are you calling for an early general election. General election. Oh well i mean for me the sooner the better. But thats in the hands of the Prime Minister and i think the conservatives are running out of road and i suspect theyll wait. But its a decision for the Prime Minister. So my job is to make sure that the labour party is ready whenever the general election comes and thats what well do. Comes and thats what well do. You look at mid bedfordshire, the number of votes cast for the labour party actually fell. So is this a sign of people supporting you or just not supporting you or just not supporting the tories . Well the supporting the tories . Well the turnout is often down in a by election. Thats not just true of mid bedfordshire or any particular seat. Its usually the case that you get less people turning out in a by election than you do at a general election. But heres the blunt truth. The elections are decided by the people who turn up to vote and the people who turned up to vote voted in the greatest for number the labour party. And this was in a seat that we were told we had no chance in. We shouldnt even be trying to fight it seriously. We were told. And its a really important lesson that its the voters who are in charge, not anybody who decides whats a likely prospect for one party or another. There are no no go areas for the labour party. Were a changed force from 2019. Keir starmer deserves huge credit for the changes hes made in the labour party in recent years and in mid bedfordshire , years and in mid bedfordshire, you know, there was never really a labour tradition of voting labourin a labour tradition of voting labour in that constituency. Its weve never held it since the 1930, but. Its got a labour the 1930, but. Its got a labour mp this morning after your success in scotland, keir starmer warned the Party Faithful not to become complacent, not to sort of count their chickens. So youre the campaign coordinator. Youve now got to go on with the next few months at least. Will you change your at least. Will you change your tack in any way . No no, i really tack in any way . No no, i really agree with what you just said from keir starmer. There. These were magnificent there. These were magnificent results last night and they show that, you know, a changed labour party is back on the pitch. But were very conscious of the size of the task in front of us, in front of us winning the trust of the public is a really important task and trust is a fragile and precious thing. And we are going to work hard for every vote. We know that the only way to power for the labour party is to speak to people who havent been voting labour in recent election , as many of them will have been voting conservative. They might have been voting for other parties. Maybe they werent voting at all. We know need voting at all. We know we need to new people to our to attract new people to our cause in doing that i think cause and in doing that i think Political Parties have a duty of humility and a duty to understand how how precious that trust is. And that will be the spirit in which i organise. The spirit in which i organise. The labour partys general election campaign. So of course were campaign. So of course were going to celebrate after results like last night, but were going to do that in the knowledge of the size of the task facing us between now and the general election. Election. Okay. Pat mcfadden , really okay. Pat mcfadden, really good to talk to you. Thanks very much, indeed. Lets talk to olivia, to our olivia utley. Olivia, to our olivia utley. Well, its a fair point. Cheers. Our Political Correspondent who joins us from westminster , pat joins us from westminster, pat mcfadden, saying there, olivia , mcfadden, saying there, olivia, you know, this big mission now is to convince people who dont vote labour that they should vote labour that they should vote labour, but the harsh reality is that isnt as what has happened in these two by elections. Well no. Elections. Well no. Whats happened in these two by elections is there has been a huge turn away from the conservative conservatives, conservative conservatives, conservative voters, it seems, were simply staying at home. As you pointed out in that interview with pat mcfadden there. Numbers of labour there. The numbers of labour votes havent actually gone up hugely. Really, as mcfadden hugely. But really, as mcfadden says, that doesnt hugely matter. Elections are decided by who comes out to vote. So weve already heard conservative ministers saying this morning that the problem was that turnout was low, that by elections are always lost by governments. The picture would be very different in a general election. But the truth is that the sheer scale both of these the sheer scale of both of these by election defeats and weve heard lots of stats this morning , tamworth was the 55th safest tory seat. It was the second tory seat. It was the second biggest tory loss of by election since the second world war. All of these stats just show the scale of the problem facing the conservatives. It might be true conservatives. It might be true that there isnt huge enthused chasm for Keir Starmers labour as there was for tony blairs labourin as there was for tony blairs labour in 1997. But with this level of anger at the conservatives lives, that hardly matters. And pat mcfadden there matters. And pat mcfadden there was was striking quite a sort of humble tone. He wasnt bragging. Hes very keen to say that he understands the task ahead. He doesnt want it to look as though labour is resting on its laurels. But the truth is labour is in a better position than its in years and its been in in years and i think now its really a question of whens the general election and when will we have a keir starmer, Prime Minister. Olivia thank you. And okay, olivia thank you. And jack carson still stood out there in the cold. Go and get a cup of tea. Jack, good to see you both. Just what i was thinking, it looks a bit wet and windy up in tamworth at the moment. Yeah, absolutely. But a few moments ago, sir keir starmer spoke to reporters and heres what had to say. What he had to say. Keir starmer after last nights victories are you now nailed on to win the next general election . Well, are well, these are huge victories. Victories. Are either of these these are either of these results would have been extraordinary. Together, extraordinary. Both together, they historic. These are they are historic. These are seats that weve never won before or rarely won before. And weve had swings of over 20. And weve had swings of over 20. And weve now had four by elections with swings of over 20. If you take selby and rutherglen as well. So, you know, that is a well. So, you know, that is a very, very important investing of confidence and trust in a changed labour party. But we accept this victory humbly , accept this victory humbly, knowing that we have to earn the vote of voters across the whole of the country. And we do that by putting our positive case to the country. The country. Turnout is down indeed, in mid for the arade dam by by mid beds for the arade dam by by 30. Why arent more people voting labour . Do you worry about theyre not flocking to yet. Sitting on their yet. Theyre sitting on their hands theyre worried about hands and theyre worried about the party, not backing the tory party, but not backing you entirely. As everybody look, i think as Everybody Knows byelections the turnout knows in byelections the turnout tends lower, but you tends to be lower, but you cant. But see that whether its in selby , in yorkshire, whether in selby, in yorkshire, whether its rutherglen in scotland, mid bedfordshire or tamworth, weve had 20, 30 swings to the labour party, a changed labour party. Now we labour party, a changed labour party. Now we are humble in this. We know that last night not only labour voters voted for us, but former tory voters voted for us because they see that there own party is drifting away , has only delivered decline and they desperately want change. We know that we have to ensure that where people have put their trust and confidence in us, we will repay that. But we go fonnard to earn those votes. We will only do that in the way that weve won these by elections, which is with a very, very positive case about how much better our country can be than the 13 years of failure that weve experienced so far. Starmer, thank you. Keir starmer, thank you. Thank. Thank you. Labour leader keir starmer there. Yeah, hes obviously been there. Yeah, hes obviously been up all night watching those results come in, but a happier man this morning, i think. Yeah. Man this morning, i think. Isiah. Man this morning, i think. Is it, you know, a roller coaster for him is it has his ups and downs. Is he heading now towards next towards victory in the next general election, whenever that may general election, whenever that maj its general election, whenever that maths never take his eye its never take his eye off the ball, though. See it still being you can see it still being close. Should we have a look at the situation in the middle east . President biden has pledged 100 billion both ukraine and billion to help both ukraine and israel. Whether he can get that israel. Whether he can get that money is a different matter. Meanwhile, the regional situation has got worse. Its got to be said. Its got the latest from Charlie Peters, whos in tel aviv for us. Bring us up to date, charlie. Well us up to date, charlie. Well there is real concern in israel this morning after comments from defence minister yoav galant, who said to soldiers gathered on the south on that border with gaza strip, you will see gaza from the inside soon the order will come this is really been a place where the Israeli Defence forces cannot row back from now. Forces cannot row back from now. Theyve made such a clear commitment to that invasion, but at the same time , questions are at the same time, questions are spiralling in israel. What will spiralling in israel. What will happen next . The primary objective is clear. They want to get into north gaza and defeat the hamas military capable cities. But after that . Cities. But what after that . Will contain themselves will they contain themselves within gaza . Will they within north gaza . Will they move try and destroy move south to try and destroy more hamas military capabilities there theyve sent so there where theyve just sent so many flee . Will many civilians to flee . Will that turn Global Opinion against the israelis as aid struggles to get through the rafah crossing . Get through the rafah crossing . And at same time, they also and at the same time, they also have eye on the have to keep an eye on the situation the north. More situation in the north. More missiles fired over from hezbollah yesterday, of hezbollah yesterday, a town of 20,000 morning 20,000 evacuated this morning and attacks on us forces in iraq and attacks on us forces in iraq and syria. And finally, also some missiles intercepted from yemen last night by us naval destroyer in the red sea coast. So an extremely complex, fast moving and escalating environment here for the israelis and the regional partners. Partners. Okay, charlie, thank you. Okay, charlie, thank you. Okay, charlie, thank you. And it really is very fast moving, everything changing. And, you know , looking worse day and, you know, looking worse day by day, isnt it . But well keep you up to date, obviously, with that situation, throughout that situation, ian, throughout the on gb news. The day here on gb news. As the cost of living now, as the cost of living crisis change your spending habits, about habits, were talking about that in moment in just a moment now what a cost of living pressures doing to us as we go to the shops. It is having an to the shops. It is having an impact, apparently. Lets talk to retail expert lucy davis who is here. Good morning. Are we spending differently . Spending differently . We are spending less and less. In fact, the ons stats have come in today and they have dropped by 0. 9 in the uk. So thats thats quite a big drop in september and really has to be expected. So cost of living be expected. So cost of living crisis , the weather as well. It crisis, the weather as well. It was a warm september and the only thing that didnt drop was food. So people were out shopping in the supermarkets, perhaps buying picnics. But we perhaps buying picnics. But we werent buying warm clothes because it was we didnt need to we didnt need to yet. And so its that combination combined with also perhaps we are now being more sensible and waiting for the black friday or not just black friday, but the whole month where are we doing this sort of sensible thing . Suppose. Like if youre if i suppose. Like if youre if youve to buy food, youve still got to buy food, youve still got to buy food, you to supermarket, but you go to the supermarket, but you go to the supermarket, but you perhaps their own brand you perhaps buy their own brand rather the more expensive rather than the more expensive branded rather than the more expensive bra absolutely, ali. In fact, absolutely, ali. In fact, i mean, here is i mean, the reason im here is i work for a Company Called sap emma do a big emma pattison. We do a big customer and customer Customer Index and Customer Loyalty index. So we surveyed 10,000 people around the world and 2000 people in the uk. And one of the things that we found was that people are actually really loyal to food brands and there might be supermarket there might be a big supermarket wars on, but they are very, very loyal to their particular supermarket. So its tough for those supermarket retailers to persuade people to move to another one. And i think some people continue to visit their Favourite Supermarket because they will send that sell that brand that they love, like marmite, for example. Yeah, or rich tea biscuits so yeah, or rich tea biscuits or mcvities crackers or something. Yeah. Yeah. You, if there is mind you, if, if there is a lot of brand loyalty to supermarkets and people and the competition is there , thats competition is there, thats good for us. It means we could get better bargains, doesnt it . Exactly. We can. And theres one thing that retailer us need to be mindful of is one of the things that we found from our research is that we call it incentivise loyalty. So we didnt bucket loyalty as a didnt just bucket loyalty as a whole we divided it whole together. We divided it into types of loyalty into different types of loyalty and the biggest drop this year was incentivised loyalty and thats loyalty for deals and discounts which is puzzling like we think were looking for deals like how is that so price is really important , like how is that so price is really important, but only to a certain some of us cant afford to be loyal anymore. So we get drawn in by a bargain. But then who stays at a store if they dont continue with those cheap prices . So people are just shopping around so much more. And a store has, you know, a shop has to do things like excellent customer service. You know, well have to well have to do more on this tomorrow and ask, what brand would you never give up . Yeah, thats a fair point. Yeah, thats a fair point. Lucy, really good to see you this thank you. Thank this morning. Thank you. Thank you very indeed. Up ellie its 930 on friday, the 20th of october. This is britains newsroom on gb news. With me, tom hannood and Ellie Costello coming up on the show today, double defeat for the tories.
