Low incomes if he becomes Prime Minister id like the overall board burden, particularly on working people, to come down, but obviously we will operate of course, and always within our fiscal rules. Fiscal rules. And later on breakfast, residents of picturesque seaside villages want wealthy londoners to be banned from buying holiday lets. Well debate whether its time to put an end to second Home Ownership to try to bring pnces Home Ownership to try to bring prices down. And alex burkill has your weather. Good morning. Whilst its going to turn mostly dry for many of us today, we do have some heavy rain arriving overnight. Ill have more later i good morning to you. Im good morning to you. Im stephen dixon. And im Ellie Costello. And and im Ellie Costello. And this is breakfast on gb news as well. Our main news this morning and the humanitarian crisis is escalating in gaza as israels large scale Bombing Campaign continues to flatten entire areas. Their mission is to wipe out hamas , which continues to out hamas, which continues to fire rockets into israel. Diesel generators are all that stand between the Palestinian People and a total blackout. As a blockade of the gaza strip prevents any aid getting in. Well, the un secretary general has said essential supplies of food, fuel and water must be allowed to reach civilians in gaza. Palestinian Health Officials say 1200 people have now died in israeli airstrikes in gaza. The israeli airstrikes in gaza. The toll from the hamas attack on israeli communities at the weekend is also 1200. Thats according to government officials there. Well, the United Nations says the number of people displaced in gaza has risen to 383,000. But gaza isnt the only front in this conflict. Another militant group , another militant group, hezbollah, lie across the northern border in neighbouring lebanon. Well, this lebanon. Well, this air raid siren sounded off in metula in northern israel, as reports of projectile fire came in. Well, 17 British Nationals, including children , are dead or including children, are dead or missing after the hamas attack on israel. A 26 year old british man who was also at the festival working as a Security Guard has been confirmed as dead. Jack marlow has been missing since the raid on the supernova festival and he died trying to save others. His mother , lisa, save others. His mother, lisa, wrote on facebook that she and her family were heartbroken after hearing the crushing. News after hearing the crushing. News well, the foreign secretary has been has been to israel to show the uks support, but there is pressure from World Leaders to find a peaceful way fonnard. The search for victims is and those missing in israel is now a huge operation. Huge operation. It is a country that is mourning its dead and reeling with anger thats led to the largest sign of its Israeli Military it has ever seen. Gb News Reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv for us now. Good morning to you , charlie. And morning to you, charlie. And weve seen that first meeting now of the emergency war cabinet in israel. Benjamin netanyahu says every hamas member is a dead man. Dead man. Yes. And 4 am. This morning, local time, the idf continued their strikes into the gaza strip. On hamas came abilities and assets. In the last ten and assets. In the last ten minutes or so, we heard from the idf that they struck and killed a senior hamas naval leader, while also continuing to take out bunkers, tunnelling routes andindeed out bunkers, tunnelling routes and indeed air defence assets that hamas contains within the gaza strip. But with all of gaza strip. But with all of these bombardments on one of the most densely populated parts of the world, there is, of course , the world, there is, of course, that horrible phrase Collateral Damage , civilian deaths in the damage, civilian deaths in the area. And also these strikes come in the context of a grave hostage situation well over 100 people taken from southern israel and into the gaza strip by Hamas Terrorists after their invasion on on saturday morning. Many International People included. Theyre not just israelis , but any normal israelis, but any normal situation. A governments first situation. A governments First Priority would to be recover their hostage is to do whatever they can to secure them. But thatis they can to secure them. But that is not the number one priority from israel. There have priority from israel. There have been very clear in the last 72 hours that what they want to do above all else is destroy the hamas military capability to wipe them out. As theyve said in the most recent briefings, well hear further updates in the next half hour. But in the last 12 hours, it seems as though many of the moments of air raid siren excitement and concern that there was last night have now simmered and the barrage of rocket attacks that we saw in the afternoon and early evening yesterday were not repeated overnight. So this repeated overnight. So this appears to be the pattern in israel. The morning after hamas come out of their shelters , they come out of their shelters, they will fire rockets from the south into those cities like ashkelon and ashdod. And then into stay wrote to the east while now also in the northern regions from southern lebanon. We are hearing and seeing the Lebanese Hezbollah fire, their rockets and mortars into northern israel. Weve also seen shelling from syria in the last 24 hours as well. And the Israeli Forces responding on all fronts last night in tel aviv , when we night in tel aviv, when we returned from our reporting, we also saw soldiers returning to rest, one injured 19 year old, a sling on his right arm and another sling on his left arm, one sling carried an injury , the one sling carried an injury, the other carried a machine gun. He other carried a machine gun. He looked rather shell shocked and i think well see many more scenes like that over the coming days as people are recovered from the frontlines during this intense fighting. But to sustain those efforts and the civilians, indeedin those efforts and the civilians, indeed in the north and the south still in place, unable to move people are relying on volunteer support that the army is doing all it to can support the logistical chain that it has here. But civilians have stepped up. And yesterday i went to see up. And yesterday i went to see a volunteer effort where people were doing all they could to send out supplies to civilians and soldiers alike. Send out supplies to civilians and soldiers alike. At and soldiers alike. At a Convention Centre in tel aviv , Convention Centre in tel aviv, volunteers are rushing to supply an army in need. Last week, many an army in need. Last week, many of the people here were protesting the government. Now they have come together to face an existential threat to israel. This room is the control centre where incoming information is gathered. People here say they gathered. People here say they are desperate to support. However they can just volunteer to do whatever. I can just want not to be in all the pressure and all the things and do things that i can to help anyone. We are packaging food suppues we are packaging Food Supplies for soldiers , for supplies for soldiers, for people from next to gaza that they need. They need supplies they need. They need supplies just left the Operations Centre here at the tel aviv Convention Centre. Centre. Were now moving into the Distribution Centre. All sorts of packing is going on. You can see empty cardboard boxes here to my right. This is where people are gathering supplies needed for the soldiers and the civilians coming up from the south of israel and also those still fighting hamas on the front lines. This is essentially a drive through Distribution Centre where the cars come in with goods , they get dropped off with goods, they get dropped off and then everybody organise here. All the packers will then collect them, put them into cardboard boxes and then they go back on different trucks and get sent to wherever theyre needed. Civilians these goods and civilians need these goods and so do soldiers. Theyre being so do soldiers. Theyre being sent down into southern israel on the front lines around the gaza envelope where the idf is now gathering hundreds of thousands of troops for a likely Ground Invasion into gaza. But Ground Invasion into gaza. But this Convention Hall isnt just for supplies in this area. Volunteers are helping inform families about dead loved ones. Families about dead loved ones. This here is the Operations Room for missing persons. It is significantly larger than the room for those confirmed dead. Everybody here is working day and night to search for people missing since the war started on saturday morning. Hundreds if not thousands of missing persons have been reported since then, and people are calling in constantly to search for them. Everyone here is working to help achieve that. After the army was achieve that. After the army was caught by surprise on saturday, these volunteers hoped that their support can make a difference in the fight against hamas. Charlie peters gb news hamas. Charlie peters gb news israel. Israel. Well, lets talk to human rights lawyer david. Hey who joins us now. Its good to see you this morning. This is an incredibly difficult situation, isnt it . Because obviously civilians , as in gaza, are being civilians, as in gaza, are being very badly affected by the israeli retaliation. But what is israeli retaliation. But what is israel meant to do when hamas is so embedded , mixed in with the so embedded, mixed in with the population . Its a strategy which which they using to try and make themselves unattackable . Well, absolutely. . Well, absolutely. Its a situation thats very , very complex and as you know, has been going on for a very, very long time in one way or another. Now, what weve seen with the un secretary general is that and other organisations are demanding humanitarian corridors be set up to allow people out of gaza and also to allow aid in. At the moment what you have, you have a strip of land effectively cut off from the outside world in terms of power, in terms of water, in terms of food, in terms of supplies. And yes, terms of supplies. And yes, there are terrorists in gaza, there are terrorists in in gaza, but every Single Person there is not a terrorist. And there needs to be safe humanitarian corridors to people out and corridors to get people out and to get supplies in fee of this makes things even more complicated, doesnt it, david . Because the borders of gaza are israel and egypt. So, i mean , the question is, where do they go . Egypt have been discussing this, havent they . Theyre this, havent they . Theyre talking about providing humanitarian aid, but rejected the move for safe corridors for refugees to leave. Well refugees to leave. Well absolutely, elly. I mean, thats the problem. Youve got israel obviously to one side and people from from from gaza will will most likely not to go into israel. And not want to go into israel. And then youve got egypt. Now the president egypt not president of egypt is not someone known someone thats very well known for protecting human rights. And he still said that he has currently still said that the borders are closed. And then, youve the then, of course, youve got the mediterranean. Youve mediterranean. So youve effectively got million effectively got 2 Million People, the majority of them young their late teens, young men in their late teens, early locked in a cage, and early 20s locked in a cage, and that that cant continue. That that that cant continue. That that that cant continue. That thatis that that cant continue. That that is a global catastrophe because something will will have to be done there. And where do these people go . These people go . Yeah, its back to that. I mean, this is a problem which has existed for a very long time now. And we still are no closer really to any answers. But the problem with these humanitarian corridors and we can understand the israeli position to an extent, cant we, in that its got the potential for allowing terrorists out , out . Terrorists out, out . Well, absolutely. And theres an awful lot of corruption involved in such situations as well in terms of it wont be just medical aid going in and out either. It will be other things weapons arms. Things like weapons and arms. So its a real problem. And like you said, its not a new one, but something something does need to be done because you cant continue bombard cant continue to bombard an enclave with 2 Million People in and continue to do that, that that will become a global catastrophe something catastrophe because something will need to be done. The question is what . And as you said, this is a very, very difficult situation. Thats not new. David, where do you predict we go from here . We know that there are now Israeli Soldiers on the border with gaza, 360,000 of them. It looks as though there could be a ground offensive starting at any time, which will make things very, very difficult for people inside gaza, even more difficult than it is now. Now. Meanwhile, it is now. Now. But meanwhile, the secretary general is the un secretary general is saying that food, fuel and water must reach civilians in gaza. Must reach civilians in gaza. I think that thats thats the thing. I think humanitarian corridors of people coming out, i think thats going to be an unlikely thing at this present time because the only way that they is to they could go really is to egypt. And that seems egypt. And that that seems unlikely moment. Its unlikely at the moment. So its getting urgent supplies but getting urgent supplies in. But as then, that is getting urgent supplies in. But as fraught then, that is getting urgent supplies in. But as fraught with hen, that is getting urgent supplies in. But as fraught with difficulties. Also fraught with difficulties. But i think is the first but that i think is the first step that we need to see. And i dont want to say a resolution of this because i dont think were going to one for were going to see one for a very, very long time. But thats thats something that needs to happen civilians are getting happen if civilians are getting injured in that injured and killed in that country. That country. Sorry, in that in that area, there needs to be area, then there needs to be supplies. The most basic suppues supplies. The most basic supplies gone in supplies need to be gone in to maintain life and to protect them. Civilians are not terrorists. Are terrorists terrorists. There are terrorists there. Civilians are not. Is there an argument there to say david . Well its all say then, david . Well its all well and good. The un calling for this to happen, but actually if the un, you know, theyre reluctant to put boots on the ground or even more boots on the ground, we should say, and but if the un actually provided that aid going through , well, perhaps aid going through, well, perhaps it gets rid of some of that corruption. It could stop the flow of arms going through. It could actually be a small step in the right direction in yeah, i think thats thats a start. I mean, the problem with theres many problems with the un, but theyre effectively toothless in many things that they do. And already seen they do. And youve already seen a of un, some un aid workers a lot of un, some un aid workers there sadly killed. So i think there sadly killed. So i think the un as opposed to any other body or any other country, is best placed to help on the ground. Were also seeing obviously a political manoeuvres. Seeing other manoeuvres. Were seeing other arab with the arab leaders speaking with the likes of biden and others to try and see if theres some way fonnard aid. And even thats going to a very interesting going to be a very interesting situation because what weve seen over the last years is seen over the last few years is a of relations a normalisation of relations between likes of the uae, between the likes of the uae, bahrain, potentially soon saudi with israel. Thats something thats new in this long running situation. So it will be very situation. So it will be very interesting to see if thats a positive or a negative thing going fonnard. Okay. David haye, human okay. David haye, human rights lawyer, very good to have you on the program this morning. Thank you very much. Well, it is 615. Lets just remind you going on this remind you whats going on this morning. Cut off morning. And israel has cut off water, and power to the water, food and power to the gaza and is continuing its gaza strip and is continuing its bombard on positions. Bombard on hamas positions. Hospitals there say theyre crumbling and ovennhelmed. The United Nations secretary general has warned of a humanitarian crisis , an appeal to israel to crisis, an appeal to israel to allow aid into gaza. Allow aid into gaza. The israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu , has promised Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to wipe hamas off the face of the earth as he joins forces with his political opponent to create an emergency. Wartime cabinet. Coming up for you on breakfast, residents of picturesque seaside villages want wealthy londoners to be banned from buying holiday homes. So should they be banned . So should they be banned . Well discuss it in the next hour. Well discuss it in the next hour. Now the well discuss it in the next hour. Now the labour well discuss it in the next hour. Now the labour conference hour. Now the labour conference is over in liverpool and labour have made some pledges on housing tax bills and the nhs. Housing tax bills and the nhs. But our Political Editor Christopher Hope went back for more. And heres what they discussed. Sir keir starmer, your wife and children are jewish. How concerned are you by the protests youve seen . Weve all seen in london and across the uk in the week. Im very in the past week. Im very concerned and so are the family members and friends that ive spoken to. Spoken to. Weve seen this in london. We see it not infrequently. And see it not infrequently. And theres a real sense of deep anxiety. Obviously in relation to the events in israel , the to the events in israel, the appalling, shocking events this, you know, cold blooded murder of men, women and children in and its terrorism. And hamas bears its terrorism. And hamas bears the responsibility. But huge the responsibility. But huge amount of anxiety. Amount of anxiety. Since your speech here in liverpool, you mentioned brexit in your speech just once, but you said here in 2018 at the Party Conference that you werent a second werent ruling out a second referendum. Your prime referendum. If your Prime Minister , if your elected Prime Minister, if your elected Prime Minister, if your elected Prime Minister, youll be renegotiating trade and renegotiating the trade and Cooperation Agreement in 2026. What will you do with that . Will you try and get the uk more closely aligned to the eu . Would you even try and reverse the result in 2016 and go back into the eu . We will not try to reverse the result. We do not intend to go the eu and for that go back into the eu and for that matter, that matter, into matter, or for that matter, into the m arket matter, or for that matter, into the market or customs the Single Market or the customs union. That doesnt mean dont union. That doesnt mean i dont think improve the deal think we can improve on the deal that weve got. And i think whether look security whether you look at security dodi, look at arts dodi, whether you look at arts and innovation or trade, almost everybody thinks theres room for improvement. We saw that to for improvement. We saw that to an extent in the protocol that the Prime Minister renegotiated and earlier this and renegotiated earlier this year but not arguing. Year. But were not arguing. Were not making the case. There is no intention to return to the eu. D0 is no intention to return to the eu. Do you get brexit . Do you understand why the vote happened . Do you understand the for brexit in the the reason for brexit in the first behind the first place . I think behind the vote a sense the vote was a deep sense across the country of an inability to influence once things in their own lives, their own communities. And thats why yesterday was so important for me to set out a case which said, look, weve had 13 years of decline and now im putting on the table ten years of national renewal. Its also why you may have noticed i reached outside of the Conference Hall into the country and invited conservative voters, people who voted for other parties to join us to make this clear that this is a national project. Everybody who cares project. Everybody who cares about their country cares about the future of their community. Is welcome to join us in what will be a national project. You said your speech you said in your speech youre working class, youre proudly working class, but dont like being called but you dont like being called sir keir in parliament. Whats the well there is the problem now . Well there is no problem. Very proud of my im very proud of my upbringing the story i was upbringing and the story i was telling yesterday about working class aspirations is really the story of my life, which is starting, you know, from modest beginnings. We had trouble making ends meet as a family , making ends meet as a family, but i had opportunity to go on a journey that took me to standing here with you as leader of the opposition. I want every young person to have that opportunity i but youre now called sir keir starmer. That makes you keir starmer. That makes you look quite out of touch to the average is that average person. Well, is that a problem . That why you worry problem . Is that why you worry about it . Was knighted for my i was knighted for my services Justice Services to criminal justice because director of because i was the director of pubuc because i was the director of public for five Public Prosecutions for five years the staff who work for years and the staff who work for me had 7000 staff, were very proud see that through that proud to see that through that their was recognised. So their work was recognised. So im very proud for them of what we achieved. The small boats crisis on the south coast of england, immigration regularly tops the polls. Issue for gb polls. A big issue for gb news viewers. Yeah, barely mentioned in speech though. Is that in your speech though. Is that why . Because youre not concerned not concerned about it . Not a problem you become prime problem if you become Prime Minister course were concerned no, of course were concerned about anybody about it. I think anybody would be government be concerned by a government thats lost control of the borders. Has to be borders. That has to be addressed thats we set addressed. And thats why we set out terms that we have to out in terms that we have to smash the criminal gangs that are running this vile trade, go back to my as director of back to my days as director of pubuc back to my days as director of Public Prosecutions. Did joint Public Prosecutions. I did joint operations smash terrorist operations to smash terrorist gangs. Convinced rinsed we gangs. I am convinced rinsed we can smash the gangs that are running this vile trade. Running this vile trade. Immigration. What level are you happy with . Of net you happy with . Of the net number, 600,000 arrived in the 12 months to june last year. Im not going to pluck number out not going to pluck a number out of sky. Of the sky. The tories do every well. They and then miss it they do, and then they miss it over over again. And weve over and over again. And weve ended with situation where ended up with a situation where the is higher than its the number is higher than its ever been. But this is symptomatic, i think, of the last years. One of the last 13 years. One of the challenges that we laid down for the yesterday tell us the tories yesterday is tell us what is, because if what your record is, because if youve a record after 13 youve got a record after 13 years, you should be telling the country so thats country what it is. So thats why them with our why i contrasted them with our project, which is actually thats not just fix the country. Lets go on this journey of national renewal. And i cant stress it enough. Its a national journey. It is cross party. You know, those that have lost faith in the party they are voting for are welcome to join us in this national project. In your speech, you talked about a competitive tax regime. Does that mean a Labour Government could cut taxes . I said competitive tax well, i said competitive tax regime. Well look, weve got the highest tax that weve highest rates of tax that weve had since the Second World War under. So all under this government. So all weve got from this government is low growth and is high tax and low growth and that the wrong recipe for the that is the wrong recipe for the country. Competitive, course. Country. Competitive, of course. But is on growth and but my focus is on growth and growing the economy. And that was the tax cut. My speech will a tax burden come down under labour . Id like the overall burden, particularly on working people, to obviously we to come down, but obviously we will of course , and will operate, of course, and always within our fiscal rules. Always within our fiscal rules. Yeah, just on the on the glitter bomb, i know its a serious issue, but call it a glitter bomb. Have you have the security apologise to you for letting you down . Frankly i my focus was on delivering that speech and many people have said to me what was going through your head . And ill tell you what was going through head. It was i going through my head. It was i have worked for four years to get labour party to a get this labour party to a position where can face the position where we can face the country address country. Position where we can face the couriry address country. Position where we can face the couri wasntaddress country. Position where we can face the couri wasnt goings country. Position where we can face the couri wasnt going to country. Position where we can face the couri wasnt going to be country. Position where we can face the couri wasnt going to be put|try. Position where we can face the couri wasnt going to be put off and i wasnt going to be put off by some idiot who on the by some idiot who came on the stage. So i took my jacket off, rolled up my sleeves and got on with the speech that with delivering the speech that id a long time to id been waiting a long time to give id been waiting a long time to givnsome were getting wet in the some were getting wet in the rain here. Thank you forjoining rain here. Thank you for joining us. Thank rain here. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Thanks for your time. Well, lets get some reaction now from our political correspondent, catherine forster. Was a wide ranging forster. That was a wide ranging interviewglitter and covering glitter bombs and brexit. Hope and sir brexit. Christopher hope and sir keir starmer, were in keir starmer, you were in liverpool whole time liverpool the whole time throughout the labour conference. It a success, conference. Was it a success, would say . Would you say . Absolutely. I would say it was a success. Labour are absolutely delighted with how it went. Now, of course it hasnt been all over the front pages because quite understand the horrific situation in the middle eastis horrific situation in the middle east is taking most of the news. But they do feel it went extremely well and they believe that they are on course for government. Now of course , the government. Now of course, the general election likely to be a year away. A lot can change. But Keir Starmers speech in particular, and indeed Rachel Reeves and Angela Rayners and they were all given to absolutely packed halls, hundreds of people standing, a rapturous response. And in terms of the glitter now, of course , i of the glitter now, of course, i was talking to sir keirs team shortly after that. They were really quite shaken by it because it could have been so much worse. And i think theres real issues around secure city that need to be looked at. But he dealt with it extremely well, didnt he . He took off his jacket. He rolled up his sleeves. He got on with it. That picture, that image will if people didnt pick up anything else from the speech, will have gone around the country and i think people will him think people will give him credit response. And credit for his response. And also, of course, he showed just how far the labour party has come since he took it over after Jeremy Corbyns disastrous loss. And they are united on their support of israel all and theyve got i have to say, a rather punchier slogan. Lets get britains future back. Then the conservatives natives, which i think was Something Like long term decisions for a brighter future, they seemed united. They seem to have the energy theyre talking about building, getting britain and building both in terms of green energy. They see net zero as an opportunity rather than a threat. I think thats a big dividing line with the conservatives. But building houses and of course theres a massive housing shortage in this country. So i suspect that will go down well with a lot of people. Of course, much easier people. Of course, much easier said than done. Lets just very briefly , lets just very briefly, catherine, have a look at the situation in israel and gaza and now lebanon, as well as it all seems to be kicking off. The foreign secretary has been in israel , hasnt he . Foreign secretary has been in israel, hasnt he . Coming under coming under fire, it has to be said. But what actually can the said. But what actually can the uk do . Uk do . Well, at the moment its making very public messages of support as indeed throughout the west. Were hearing these messages of solidarity with israel, displaying the flag on number 10, on parliament. Now James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, made this surprise visit to israel yesterday as you say, he had to run for cover unexpectedly. He said that was the first time in his career hes ever been in a situation like that. Thankfully, hes fine, but he was meeting with senior israeli leaders talking about the support that the United Kingdom can give to israel. Now, i think its worth saying that the labour and the conservatives are both on the same page on this complete. Same page on this complete. Theyre both saying absolutely , theyre both saying absolutely, israel has the right to defend itself, also saying, of course , itself, also saying, of course, that they need to act within international law. Now at the moment, all the voices are fully foursquare behind israel. But of foursquare behind israel. But of course, the United Nations is very concerned about the blockade of electricity, power for water, food to gaza. And this is going to be an unfolding humanitarian crisis. Humanitarian crisis. Okay, catherine, for now , okay, catherine, for now, thank you. Thank you. Still to come, paul coyte will have all of the latest sports thats. N ext next good morning to you. This is breakfast with stephen and ellie. Now lets take a look at some of the top stories today. A reminder of our top story that israel has cut off water, food and power to the gaza strip and continues its bombardment. And power to the gaza strip and continues its bombardment. The continues its bombardment. The hospitals there say they are crumbling and ovennhelmed. The United Nations secretary general warns of a humanity in crisis and has appealed to israel to allow aid into gaza. Well, the israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to wipe hamas off the face of the earth as he joins forces with his political opponents to create an emergency. Wartime cabinet. But in other news, labour leader sir keir starmer tells gb news he will cut taxes for people on low incomes if he becomes Prime Minister. And still to come for you, residents of picturesque seaside villages want the wealthy elite to be banned from buying holiday. Lets will debate whether its time to put an end to second Home Ownership to try to bring pnces Home Ownership to try to bring prices down. In prices down. In well, its time to go through all the latest sports news now on broadcaster paul coyte is here with us. And im very excited to talk to you about its very formal. Its extremely formal. Its extremely formal. Good morning to you. Yes. Wayne. Hes going wayne rooney. Hes going to brum. Wayne rooney. Hes going to bru he he is. Its probably he is. He is. Its probably the worst kept secret in football because he left dc united over in the states after hed to derby and then hed hed gone to derby and then hed gone america and was there gone to america and was there for a year and, you know, it wasnt a great record the year no, really wasnt. And it no, there really wasnt. And it wasnt either. But wasnt a derby either. But anyway, american owners at Birmingham City , you know, they Birmingham City, you know, they want to try and improve the club and turning it into a well, its just turning into a very successful football club. And anyway , theyve gone with wayne anyway, theyve gone with wayne because , you know, hes a big because, you know, hes a big name, isnt he . Gary eustis, who was the manager , was actually was the manager, was actually doing very well. Hed been through a lot of trouble at birmingham. The fact that they had no money and then they ended up getting bought out and then they with they had to face problems with relegation we did really relegation and we did really well. Theyve decided its well. But theyve decided its got a big name. Tom got to be a big name. So tom wagner, whos the owner, said wayne is a born winner. Hes playing philosophy. He will help playing philosophy. He will help realise the ambitions of Birmingham City. I realise the ambitions of Birmingham City. I dont know Birmingham City. I dont know whether he calls them birmingham. He probably does. He probably does. He probably does. But anyway, it will probably all fit. Big name, so fit. Its a big name, so hopefully will work for wayne hopefully it will work for wayne because to work. Because he needs this to work. Because this doesnt work, because if this doesnt work, then nowhere he can then theres nowhere else he can go after that. It really has the whole so it really has the whole managerial side just hasnt worked out for him, has it . But he has had exactly. But he has had things contend with, things to contend with, especially well especially with derby. But well see with birmingham. See how it goes with birmingham. Should to spend. Should have the money to spend. Can talk scotland . Yes. Can we talk scotland . Yes. And espana . Yes game for scotland huge game for scotland tonight because scotland and although were beaten by england in couple of in that friendly a couple of weeks when it comes to the weeks ago when it comes to the euro qualifying theyre just been unbelievable. Theyve played won five, played five, theyve won five, theyve beaten spain, theyve already beaten spain, 2 0 in scotland , but theyre 2 0 in scotland, but theyre going over to seville and they will play them tonight. If they win, they qualify by, you know, its another great quote. This is john mcginn, plays is from john mcginn, who plays for aston villa, scottish midfield. He said, only now midfield. He said, only now shall i do the accent. I dont think i will only, only now, only our week. Oh, this complaints coming in already. And even started it. And i havent even started it. Only wee country could mess only our wee country could mess it here. So we have to it up from here. So we have to stay calm because they dont have good record when it comes have a good record when it comes down wire. But anyway, down to the wire. But anyway, they be okay. Its going they should be okay. Its going to against spain two to be tough against spain two games that. So they should games after that. So they should be right to qualify. But as be all right to qualify. But as john it aint over john mcginn says, it aint over yet, so they cant throw it away , which weve got. One minute with you. Can you tell about var one minute . Its almost impossible basically to cut an extra and the rest will go on for three hours after the spurs, liverpool game and var problems, its game and the var problems, its now said that it will be a good idea that we could all see whats going on on the screens , whats going on on the screens, in the stadiums. Whats going on on the screens, in the stadiums. Referees are in the stadiums. Referees are pretty much against it because you can understand if theyre looking, theyre the whole of the crowd going, oh, its offside , its not offside. So offside, its not offside. So theyve got to deal with that. But it needs to be so everybody can see whats going on because when go to a game, you just when you go to a game, you just sit and wait. You wait for sit there and wait. You wait for the and then the the referee and then the decision made. So basically decision is made. So basically thats the next step is to let everybody see whats going on. Im for it. Transparency. Im all for it. Transparency. Im all for it. Absolutely brief but delightful. Delightful. Well you in the next houn as always. As always. Still come for you this still to come for you this morning, condemned morning, king charles condemned hamas as terrorists. That and hamas as terrorists. That and more to come in headline makers in just a moment. Well joining us now to go through some of the days headunesis through some of the days headlines is a former liberal democrat minister, norman baker, and columnist at conservative home, emily carver. Very good to see you both this morning. Oh, good morning. And emily, lets start with you, shall we . And the daily mail. And this is a message from the king, his support for israel. Tell us a bit more about this. Yes, this very yes, this is very interesting. This last interesting. So this was last night. King charles put out a statement he condemning the acts of terrorism hamas and of terrorism by hamas and william and kate went even further , as the daily mail further, as the daily mail writes here. And they said the country has a right to defend itself if they use the words right of self defence. Hence, right of self defence. Hence, with regards to israel. Now, with regards to israel. Now, this is very interesting coming from the royal family. Usually they dont get involved in political matters, but on this, they felt the need to come out and say so. And the mail also and say so. And the mail also talks about how the bbc have failed to call Hamas Terrorists, choosing instead to call them militants. Now, interesting. Militants. Now, interesting. Interestingly late last night i saw that a selection of barristers and lords have written a letter to ofcom asking why the bbc isnt using or isnt using the term terrorist and saying that is not the same as impartiality and that its not reporting as they are. It is a prescribed organisation, isnt it . So it is classed by the uk government as a terrorist organisation. Have to say i havent watched any bbc coverage so i wouldnt know what theyve been calling them. Well, good. Steve but you do wonder on that norman, is it . I mean, look , the bbc perhaps has a very fine line, but, but this is a clear cut issue. The bbc can cannot win in these situations. And im old these situations. And im old enough to remember the falklands war when the bbc was accused of being unpatriotic reporting being unpatriotic for reporting the news as accurately and dispassionately. And i think dispassionately. And i think here the bbc, i heard , i heard a here the bbc, i heard, i heard a defence from bbc on the defence from the bbc on the radio, think on World Service radio, i think on World Service and whoever it was was saying that this a normal that this is a normal International Standard when youre reporting incidents like this to use kind of neutral terms and allow the audience to make up their own mind as to the motivation and the correctness or othennise of the action taken. And some sympathy taken. And i got some sympathy with where i think with that view where i think ive got considerable concerns is actually the first point emily was referring to, which is about king charles getting involved. I dont its at involved. I dont think its at all appropriate the royal all appropriate for the royal family involved these family to be involved in these matters, these are highly political highly political matters, highly sensitive matters, quite controversial , and not just the controversial, and not just the use of the word terrorist, but also the very fact that theyre speaking war matters. I speaking on on war matters. I dont i dont recall the dont regard i dont recall the royal family regularly speaking on International Matters such as this. And id be interested to know, did they speak, though, when when have when previously when there have been . Been terror attacks . Yes. Yes. Recall doing i dont recall them doing 911. I dont recall them doing so. They may have done i dont know. Emily i dont recall. But i think the interesting question to we if we get an to be asked, if we if we get an answer is whether or not the king and william were acting in a government a sense on government instructions, which what the instructions, which is what the royal family should do when theyre publicly theyre speaking publicly about matters or whether they behaved in a freelance because in a freelance manner . Because charles, well, charles, of course, said, well, he took the throne. He would no longer be freelancing as he was he took the throne. He would no l0|prince, freelancing as he was he took the throne. He would no l0|prince, butelancing as he was he took the throne. He would no l0|prince, but itincing as he was he took the throne. He would no l0|prince, but it would as he was he took the throne. He would no l0|prince, but it would bele was at prince, but it would be extraordinary, wouldnt it, if on of this scale , all on something of this scale, all they didnt comment. I think if this not go beyond politics, i think, you know, the mass murder of. Yes. Yes. I think if the if the. Well, first of all, clearly, thats a disgraceful and horrible act thats taking place. I put myself in a position to think of what the queen would have done. And i think the queen would have said this is its terrible, the loss of i sympathise with loss of life. I sympathise with all families taken that all the families and taken that sort without getting the sort of line without getting the political to it. Political aspect to it. But thats political. Im just i dont know to just saying that i dont know to isnt it . Lose life, its if you lose life, its whoever, wherever you lose life, its tragedy. Its yeah, its a tragedy. Difficult one. Difficult one. Difficult one. What . Norman what have you found . Guardian online on found . The Guardian Online on looking early looking at potentially early warning. So i mean, what were you effect call intelligence you in effect call intelligence failures . Yes. Well , theres obviously some well, theres obviously some criticism of israeli criticism of the Israeli Government for not being up to speed whats happened and speed with whats happened and not this. And theres not anticipate this. And theres an interesting the an interesting story in the Guardian Online says egypt Guardian Online which says egypt warned israel of hamas attacks days earlier, and that comes from the chairman of the Us House Foreign Affairs committee that says israel was warned by egypt three days beforehand and the americans repeated of something well. If thats the something as well. If thats the case, you know , not now, case, then you know, not now, presumably, there presumably, but there are questions for the Israeli Government about how their intelligence didnt intelligence worked or didnt work. Yeah, and there are questions about because questions about that because its some of its considered to be some of the intelligence indeed in the best intelligence indeed in the best intelligence indeed in the world in israel and the geopolitics really geopolitics of this is really interesting. Interesting. Lots of people are i mean, lots of people are saying in of hamas saying in terms of hamas attacking on saturday was in part with that saudi part to do with that saudi israel deal, which now set israel deal, which now looks set to in tatters. To be in tatters. Well, theres a whole backstory which which let backstory here, which which let me first all, for the me say, first of all, for the avoidance doubt, that nothing avoidance of doubt, that nothing can was can justify the action that was taken hamas to kill innocent taken by hamas to kill innocent civilians. I mean, was civilians. I mean, that was appalling and completely unjustified. Nothing can unjustified. And nothing can justify that. However, if you go back and look at this story over 20, 30, 40 years, even longer, perhaps, then youve got the palestinians who have wanted their own state, the International Community through the un has said there should be a palestinian state. The israelis have refused to give that. On the other hand, the palestinians have refused in some cases to recognise the right to exist a right of israel to exist as a state. Theres been that state. So theres been that that dichotomy youve also had, for example, 800 settlers who stormed mosque on stormed the al aqsa mosque on 5th of october. You have a 248 palestinians killed by Israeli Forces this year. How israel is supposed to negotiate date with hamas , an organisation that hamas, an organisation that wants them dead and annihilated from. Yes, emily, youre right. From. Yes, emily, youre right. They cant negotiate with hamas, but weve got the situation where the extreme ists on both sides are taking control. Lets sides are taking control. Lets remember, this is the most right wing. Theres no equivale. Come on. Theres no equivale. Come on. There is no equivalence between hamas and the right wing government israel. Government in israel. Know. There is not. Thats crazy. The israeli the Israeli Government would never butcher people in their beds and children and rape. I mean, that is just there is no equivalent. As i say, im not defending any of that by any side. But what i would say is this. The israelis Israeli Defence minister week said that minister has this week said that hes to cut off all food, hes going to cut off all food, all fuel, all water for all atrocity from the gaza strip. 2 atrocity from the gaza strip. 2 Million People there who are going to be starved to death there. Not 2 million terrorists. Not 2 million terrorists. No. I mean, this is the hideous, the hideousness of war, isnt it . And hideous, the hideousness of war, isnt it . And i dont know if this is this is the right response from the Israeli Government at all. I know is that israel is facing they have. Well, its existential in their case in terms of their very existence and their right to their nation, in terms of the us. Then they are surrounded by countries who would quite like to see them. Well, they would say seretary of state Antony Blinken is meeting Benjamin Netanyahu today. Hes also we think, going to meet the Palestinian Authority leader, Mahmoud Abbas. Now, of course, he isnt hamas. Hes fatah. Yes, but and a man who is supporter by the west, but doesnt seem to actually have any control, any power at all. Hes totally irrelevant, im afraid. I mean, hes got no power. He doesnt control the palestinians. He ought to have been subject to a re election. And he hasnt put himself up for re election. The west bank, re election. And the west bank, of course, an entirely of course, is an entirely different the different situation. The israelis, from this israelis, i understand from this report guardian were report in the guardian were expecting on the west report in the guardian were expec around on the west report in the guardian were expec around the on the west report in the guardian were expec around the gaza 1e west report in the guardian were expec around the gaza strip,st bank around the gaza strip, which why were which is why they were blindside, aided perhaps by what hamas. Hamas did. As we look at this, emily, and can i ask you about the words of Binyamin Netanyahu , who words of Binyamin Netanyahu, who says he wants to wipe hamas off the face of the earth, which which as a reaction, you can understand. The reality is, of course, thats an impossibility i yeah, i think its incredibly difficult. And when you look at difficult. And when you look at the loss of life in palestine, in in gaza, it is well, its shocking. And horrifying. Youve seen children dying. Youve seen pictures of children being taken with their parents in their arms, dead. I mean, its arms, dead. I mean, its hideous, hideous to look at. What i would say is that unfortunately , we and its unfortunately, we and its spoken about a lot. Hamas does place military and its sites in and amongst civilians using hospitals , using their own hospitals, using their own people as human shields. Hamas are not, you know , dont theyre are not, you know, dont theyre not people people are using the hideous term Freedom Fighters. These people arent fighting for freedom. These people want it, you know, want the jews not to have not to be there, you know, so its just someones say, well, no, its totally horrific. The loss of life is just hideous i okay. Well, look, it is very nearly 645. Lets just remind you of what is the top story this morning. And israel has cut off water, food and power to the gaza strip. Its continuing its bombard and hospitals there say there crumbling and ovennhelmed. The un secretary general has warned of a humanitarian crisis and is appealing to israel to allow aid into gaza. Allow aid into gaza. The israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to wipe hamas off the face of the earth as he joins forces with his political opponent to create an emergency. Wartime cabinet and the labour leader, sir keir starmer, has told gb news he will cut taxes for people on low incomes if he becomes Prime Minister. People on low incomes if he becomes Prime Minister. Well, becomes Prime Minister. Well, were still here with norman baker , the former liberal baker, the former liberal democrat minister, and emily carver, columnist at conservative home. And norman, i just wanted to have a look at the front page of the times, and were just touching there in the headunes were just touching there in the headlines about this emergency war government. Netanyahu forming with the head of the opposition in to form this emergency cabinet. Well, i think thats a positive move in a sense. Youll be aware that the Israeli Government has been behaving domestically and quite controversial. And theres controversial way. And theres been all these demonstrations about proposals to take away power the judiciary in power from the judiciary in israel, which i think many of us have unhappy so the have been unhappy about. So the fact reaching out fact that there is reaching out to the opposition is, in fact, maybe a cloud a silver maybe a cloud with a Silver Lining in a sense in this particular situation. Particular situation. Yeah, its but its interesting, isnt it, that now , of course, theyre facing a battle on two fronts. Yes. Theyve got hezbollah now starting from the north of israel to take advantage or to show solidarity, as they would put it , in show solidarity, as they would put it, in terms of the action theyre taking. And emilys theyre taking. And emilys right. I mean, israel has been surrounded which surrounded by countries which are hostile you know , are hostile to them. You know, ever since theyve been in existence. Theyve reached existence. Theyve reached deals, of course, with egypt and so on over the in the past with the camp david agreement. But but there are but nevertheless, there are still which are opposed still forces which are opposed to the deal to be the to them. The deal has to be the ultimate deal which the west saysis ultimate deal which the west says is the palestinians need a state and people need to recognise has recognise that israel has a right to and thats the right to exist and thats the ultimate we have to to. Ultimate goal we have to get to. Get to that point can we get to that point without . Not that we can solve it there. Its really a realistic but it does it is going to involve the community isnt the wider Arab Community isnt it, to make this work. This is one of the things thats so sad about this is that israel was moving towards rapprochement with many countries, as ali mentioned, saudi arabia, for one. And it looks like that was certainly one of the motives , certainly one of the motives, opfions certainly one of the motives, options for this for this terrorist attack from hamas and also now from from hezbollah to put that well to smash that to pieces as well. The normalisation of relations. Normalisation of relations. Okay, emily, were going to break in because the Health Secretary, Steve Barclay is standing by and is raring to go. Good, good to see you this morning. And look, i know theres lots of things you want to talk about, but weve got to kick off with a situation in in israel and gaza, havent. We israel and gaza, havent. We its partly what can the uk government do to help and where does the uk government stand on guard . The and the blockade and guard . The and the blockade and whether there needs to be humanitarian, humanitarian aid allowed in . Well well, firstly, we can be very clear that we stand with israel. Thats why the foreign secretary was in israel yesterday. Being clear in our yesterday. Being clear in our unequivocal support of israels right to defend themselves from these most appalling terrorist atrocities that they faced. Of atrocities that they faced. Of course, civilian casualties need to be minimised, and thats what the foreign secretary was clear about yesterday. Okay. But it is about yesterday. Okay. But it is the case that israel needs to be able to defend itself from these attacks to rescue the hostages that are being taken and to deter future attacks of the sort that weve seen the current state of affairs is that there are 2 Million People living in gaza. As you know. Theres no food, no fuel, no medicines allowed in. There could be 2 Million People. Well, not all of them terrorists who are going to starve to death unless aid is allowed in. Should there be humanitarian corridors and should aid be sent to gaza . Should aid be sent to gaza . Well, the uk is one of the biggest aid donors, of course, in terms of gaza. We channel that aid through the united nafions. That aid through the United Nations. We give about 10 of nations. We give about 10 of the aid, our aid budget last year was £13 billion. So the uk has a proud record in terms of aid, but israel has to be able to defend itself from these terrorist atrocities. And we also need to recognise that there are hostages currently in gaza, that have been taken from israel and israel needs to be able to respond to that. But the i mean, the problem is, as as you will be well aware and i know youre sort of toeing the line, if you like, and not wanting to say anything, which is sort of going against what Benjamin Netanyahu is saying. But the problem is, the more you allow civilians in gaza to suffer as civilians in israel have suffered in a different way, the more we perpetuate the problem with terrorist organisations , dont we . Organisations, dont we . Well, its hamas that is putting the civilian population in at risk. Its hamas that is co locating its military operations in civilian areas. Its hamas that has launched the terrorist attacks on israel and its hamas that has taken hostages back into gaza. So responsibility sits with the terrorist organisation hamas, for what is happening. And its right that israel is able to defend itself from the most appalling attacks that it is faced. But alongside that, the uk has a proud record in terms of its overseas aid. We are of its overseas aid. We are major donors. 10 of the aid major donors. 10 of the aid through the United Nations and the foreign secretary is in israel discussing these issues as we stand with them in the face of the catastrophic events that theyve faced, we just touched there on James Cleverly who is in israel at the moment. We actually saw him running from an air raid siren last night. What is being done to protect british people on the ground in israel and those as well who hold dual citizenship . Well who hold dual citizenship . Well, there are a large number of people that do hold dual citizenship, and that is why the foreign secretary was in israel discussing these issues. Of course, it is a fast moving situation and thats why i urge anyone concerned about these issues to follow the advice on the Foreign Office website that is updated regularly because obviously events are moving at pace. There are still commercial flights in terms of from israel , but these are issues that the foreign secretary was there discussing with our counterparts in the Israeli Government. In the Israeli Government. What what do we do . What are we doing about the situation here in the uk where, of course , as weve seen a number of incidents , these tensions are incidents, these tensions are very high amongst both the israeli and the palestinian communities. Here communities. Here well, the foreign the home secretary is being very clear in terms of her contact both with the Jewish Community of our absolute commitment to defend them and to stand with them. But also very clear with chief constables in terms of ensuring that the law is enforced. We have a proud tradition in terms of peoples right to protest within the United Kingdom, but that does not mean putting other communities in fear or does not mean some of the vandalism or other crimes that weve seen. So patrols have been increased by the home secretary has been in very close contact with jewish groups, with chief constables to ensure that everything is done to protect those communities, because we recognise that theres huge concern, just huge fear, theres huge alarm within our jewish fear, theres huge alarm within ourJewish Community fear, theres huge alarm within our Jewish Community and fear, theres huge alarm within ourJewish Community and thats our Jewish Community and thats why the home secretary has been in close contact with the police to ensure everything is done to additional protection in place. Additional protection in place. Many the papers this many of the papers this morning are reporting that there are 360,000 israeli troops on the border with gaza ready to cross into gaza early next week if there is a ground offensive, will we be supporting israel with weaponry. With weaponry. Well, we stand with israel and were fully supportive of them. And the foreign secretary is in israel discussing that support. So were very clear in our stance, our full unequivocal support for israel and its right to defend itself. Okay look, were going to leave it there. Steve barclay, to good see you this morning. Thanks very much indeed. Want to get very much indeed. Want to get some from baker some reaction from norman baker and carver. Norman if and emily carver. Norman if i may say so, thought you had may say so, i thought you had some good questions and some very good questions and didnt get very good answers. I mean, skated the i mean, you skated around the questions about questions that you asked about humanitarian aid corridor. Its absolutely a key question. And israel a israel really is, as a democratic country with a with a proud record of elections ought to be prepared to allow humanitarian aid into gaza to make sure the citizens there dont suffer. And indeed, i have to say that its in israels interest to make sure that that happens. Othennise becomes a happens. Othennise it becomes a target criticism elsewhere target for criticism elsewhere from the way behaves, you from the way he behaves, you know, got a very different know, hes got a very different situation. Its been treated appallingly these appallingly by these by these mass this mass murders across in this country. Needs to respond country. But it needs to respond in way is above that not in a way that is above that not coming down to level. Coming down to that level. Obe do you make of that obe what do you make of that interview with Steve Barclay yeah, i think what yeah, i think that i think what norman is right. Norman says is, is right. It doesnt seem right that it it doesnt seem right that if theres no aid being able to get through to the people, get through to the gazan people, that its just horrifying, really. I dont really know what the i dont know the answers are. I dont know what the government in israel should do. Dont know what our should do. I dont know what our government from government can do apart from show support. I certainly show our support. I certainly dont theyre going get dont think theyre going to get involved dont involved militarily. I dont think government think the Israeli Government needs barclay very needs that. Steve barclay very much the line there, much toeing the line there, which fair enough because which is fair enough because this recent event. This is a very recent event. I doubt steve, a doubt he wants to get into the nitty gritty of the politics here, which to some extent is fair enough. I mean thats partly the problem with this, isnt it . That i mean, if youve been around long enough , i mean, it around long enough, i mean, it used to be that the situation was these sort of attacks were bread and butter us. It was bread and butter for us. It was what i used to write scripts on in my early career. Every single day was something going on day there was something going on and now were back it. And and now were back to it. And you from from from back you know, from from from back then that it is so then, even i know that it is so incredibly complex and so incredibly complex and so incredibly nuanced that you do have to be very careful with what you say. Its be very careful what you say. And very careful with what you do. And unfortunately , we you do. And unfortunately, we need to wind the clock back 30 years to and sort this out. Years to try and sort this out. And people have got fixed and people have now got fixed positions are unhelpful positions which are unhelpful and the way this has developed has been cancerous, has been has been cancerous, frankly, over the over the last 30 i dont what the 30 years. I dont know what the answer not sure there is answer is. Im not sure there is answer is. Im not sure there is an answer. But ultimately, were going to end up with either a either state solution, either the two state solution, which doesnt want, and which israel doesnt want, and the palestinians cant deliver, not because of hamas. Not least because of hamas. Do they want it either . Well. Do they want it either . Well. Well , some of them do do they want it either . Well. Well, some of them do and some of them dont. Hamas doesnt. Yeah, but the ones in control of this operation with abbas does. But, i mean, hes hes powerless. But we have to get to that situation. But i dont see how were to get there, how were going to get there, im whats going im afraid. Whats going to happen, to going get happen, this is to going get a lot worse before it gets better. Yeah, mean, thats the yeah, i mean, thats the concern, isnt it . Mean, concern, isnt it . I mean, if were talking about a ground offensive next week offensive starting next week 360,000 on the 360,000 israeli troops on the border, mean, if they border, i mean, if they enter gaza, a very built up, gaza, that is a very built up, dense urban area. Theres going to bloodshed on both sides. Thats one soldier for every six gazans. Thats thats the scale of it. Worry also about, you and i worry also about, you know, this plays out in know, how this plays out in britain across the west. Britain and across the west. As weve with of the weve seen with all of the protests, celebrations, whatever you call them, theres you want to call them, theres huge in this country. Huge division in this country. And do about jewish and i do worry about jewish communities them feeling communities and them feeling fear, fearful. Fear, fearful. I mean, thats the thing which is huge, distasteful. The people, as you say , who have people, as you say, who have been there have been celebrate versions of this. Now theyre is whatever your view , whatever whatever your view, whatever your background, theres nothing to celebrate. To celebrate. Theres nothing to celebrate about nothing about death, nothing to celebrate, about children being killed. I think about about pensioners taken hostage. Pensioners being taken hostage. None that be none of that should be celebrated any celebrated by anybody in any shape and yes, it will shape or form. And yes, it will be in effect in the Jewish Community in this country. When i was a home minister, i was a home office minister, i met the jewish met some of the Jewish Community. Do find community. They do find themselves to appalling themselves subject to appalling acts vandalism threats acts of vandalism and threats that a normal day. That happen on a normal day. Then this happens. And then this happens. And then this happens. To leave it yeah. Weve got to leave it there. Good to see both. There. Good to see you both. Well with you a little well catch up with you a little bit later on. Much more on well. Good morning. Its just well. Good morning. Im Ellie Costello and this is breakfast on. Is breakfast on. Gb news. Well our main news today in the humanitarian crisis is escalating in gaza as israels large scale Bombing Campaign continues to flatten entire areas there stated mission now is to wipe out hamas, which is continuing to fire rockets into israel as well. Diesel generators are all that stand between the Palestinian People and a total blackout as a blockade on the gaza strip prevents any aid getting in. Well, the United Nations says secretary general has said essential supplies of food, fuel and water must be allowed to reach sevilla tions in gaza. Palestinian Health Officials say 1200 people have died in israeli airstrikes in gaza. The israeli airstrikes in gaza. The toll from the hamas attack on israeli communities at the weekend is also 1200. Thats according to government officials. Well , the United Nations says well, the United Nations says the number of people displaced in gaza has now risen to 383,000. But gaza isnt the only front in this conflict. Another front in this conflict. Another militant group, hezbollah , lie militant group, hezbollah, lie across the northern border in neighbouring lebanon. Neighbouring lebanon. Well, this air raid sirens sounded off in metula in northern israel as reports of projectile fire came in. Well , king charles, we can well, king charles, we can show you some pictures of him on a recent visit to israel has released a statement saying he is appalled by and condemns the barbaric acts of terrorism in israel. Israel. He goes on to say that his thoughts and prayers are with all of those suffering, particularly those who have lost loved ones , but also those loved ones, but also those actively involved as we speak. Well, the foreign secretary, James Cleverly, has held talks in israel to show the uks support on the war on hamas. But not long after hed arrived, he had to flee to a bomb shelter as air raid sirens warned of incoming rockets in southern israel. Southern israel. Well, the us secretary of state, Antony Blinken, has also arrived in israel very recently in a show of support for the country. Hes also going to meet the palestinian president , Mahmoud Abbas. Hes not connected to hamas. He leads the Fatah Movement. Thats, of course, the one that Yasser Arafat used to lead , which is arafat used to lead, which is based in the palestinian territory in the west bank. Im going with a very simple and clear message on behalf of the president of the United States and on behalf of the american people, and that is that the United States has israels back. We have the back of the israeli people. We have their back today. Well have it tomorrow. Will have it every tomorrow. We will have it every day the last few well, in the last few minutes, spoken the minutes, weve spoken to the health Steve Barclay Health Secretary, Steve Barclay , and asked him if the uk , and we asked him if the uk government agreed with the appeal the un to allow aid appeal from the un to allow aid into gaza. Into gaza. Well, the uk is one of the biggest aid donors , of course, biggest aid donors, of course, in terms of gaza. We channel in terms of gaza. We channel that aid through the United Nations. We give about 10 of the aid. Our aid budget last year was £13 billion. So the uk has a proud record in terms of aid , but israel has to be able aid, but israel has to be able to defend itself from these terrorist atrocities. And we also need to recognise that there are hostages currently in gaza, that have been taken from israel and israel needs to be able to respond to that. Able to respond to that. Well, 17 British Nationals, including children , are dead or including children, are dead or missing after the hamas attack on israel. A 26 year old british man who was working as a Security Guard at a Music Festival in israel when it was attacked by hamas on saturday, has been confirmed as dead by his family. Jack marlow has been missing since the raid on the supernova festival. His mother, lisa, wrote on facebook that she and her family were heartbroken after hearing the crushing news. Also amongst those known to have died is 20 year old nathaniel young, who was serving in the israeli army when he was killed during the hamas raids. Killed during the hamas raids. He attended the same school as mr marlow bernard cowan, who grew up around glasgow, has also died. Well, 1200 people have died. Well, 1200 people have lost their lives since hamas attacked israel. Many remain missing, feared dead or kidnapped. It is a country that is understandably angry beyond comprehension, and that has to led the largest signup of reservists the Israeli Military has seen for years. Well, gb News Reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv for us now. Good morning to you, charlie. And weve seen this first meeting of the emergency war cabinet in israel , havent we, this this israel, havent we, this this coalition. Benjamin netanyahu and the leader of the opposition and the leader of the opposition and their rhetoric is strong. Every hamas member is a dead man. They say. Man. They say. Yes. And it marks a very sudden shift away from the political disunity that was rife in israel just a week ago. So in israel just a week ago. So many of the people that ive met here in tel aviv were actually campaigning or protesting against the government here. But now there is a sense of unity not only among the government, but among the people , too. There but among the people, too. There are questions for the government , of course, after the significant intelligence failure on saturday that led to that invasion. But i think the priority for all people here is to resist what they describe as brutal. And isis like terrorist attacks that have occurred on their territory since saturday morning. Well, in the last hour here, we have heard two large explosions over central tel aviv as a suburb near us was targeted by rocket attacks. Were not certain on the point of origin now, but its highly likely that it came from the gaza strip, where many of the rockets fired in this direction have come from. I iron dome. It seems the air defence system that israel has protect its territory did work , did come into effect and work, did come into effect and destroy those rockets above this location on saturday, they managed to intercept 90 of the rockets as hamas fired over 4500 missiles into israel. Its missiles into israel. Its thought that the terrorists in the gaza strip have tens of thousands of munitions. Were not sure how many theyve used since saturday, but rocket barrages have been common during the day in the last 72 hours as theyre restarting again. Now, weve also seen reports in the last half hour of more rocket attacks to the north and in the south, in the north, of course, there comes with an additional pressure for the israeli side as they deal with the likely start of a new front as the Lebanese Hezbollah become more bold in their attacks from southern lebanon, there has also been shelling from syria that the Israeli Defence forces have responded to with helicopter gunships and tank artilley three hundreds of thousands of reserves have been activated here and people have flown in from all over the world. Israelis coming back to support their country during its time of need. A british israeli soldier, ispoke need. A british israeli soldier, i spoke to last night who had flown back in the last few days said that they had done so due to the existential threat to the country that she loves. Now, israel , of course, with all the israel, of course, with all the reservists that activated , many reservists that activated, many are being sent to the north to reinforce the heightened threats report that is occurring up there. Last night there were there. Last night there were there was a sense of panic really in tel aviv as reports of drones swarming over the border and terrorists incursions were sent to us. But it appears that that was a false report , really, that was a false report, really, i think, affirming the sense of panic and terror and the extreme sense of sensitivity that people in israel are feeling and its understandable. This is the worst violence that they have seen here for 50 years. And as they react to that violence, more Bombing Campaigns and more targeted strikes on the gaza strip, on the hamas capabilities , assets and people are going to continue over the next few days. Okay. Charlie peters in tel aviv, thank you very much for that update. Update. And as charlie was saying, are we going to have a look at that, that report he did . I that, that report he did . I think i think we should , because think i think we should, because its interesting looking at how volunteers are getting involved in all of this. Volunteers are getting involved in all of this. And as charlie in all of this. And as charlie was saying, so many people are flying in from around the world, actually, people with jewish heritage to volunteer for the Israeli Defence force. But Israeli Defence force. But actually, its what ordinary people are doing as well in their volunteer cheering to support the effort at a Convention Centre in tel aviv, volunteers are rushing to supply an army in need. An army in need. Last week, many of the people here were protesting the government, but now they have come together to face an existential threat to israel. This room is the control centre where incoming information is gathered. People here say they gathered. People here say they are desperate to support. However they can just volunteer i do whatever i can. I just want not to be in all the pressure and all the things and do things that i can to help anyone. We are Packaging Supplies for soldiers , for people from next soldiers, for people from next to gaza that they need. They to gaza that they need. They need supplies. Weve just left the Operations Centre here at the tel aviv Convention Centre. Were now moving into the Distribution Centre. All sorts of packing is going on. You can see empty cardboard boxes here to my right. This is where people are gathering supplies needed for the soldiers and the civilians coming up from the south of israel and also those still fighting hamas on the front lines. This is essentially front lines. This is essentially a drive through Distribution Centre. The cars come in with centre. The cars come in with goods , they get dropped off and goods, they get dropped off and then everybody organising here, all the packers will then collect them, put them into cardboard boxes and then they go back on different trucks and get sent to wherever theyre needed. Civilians need these goods and so do soldiers. Everybody here is working day and night to for search people missing since the war started on saturday morning. Hundreds if not thousands of missing persons have been reported since then and people are calling in constantly to search for them. Everyone here is working to help achieve that. After the army was caught by surprise on saturday, these volunteer is hoped that their support can make a difference in the fight against hamas. Charlie peters, gb news, hamas. Charlie peters, gb news, israel. Israel. Well, the United Nations and the eu have appealed to israel to end its blockade of gaza, which they say is illegal. Lets talk to the defence editor of the evening standard, robert fox. Hi, robert. I mean, its nuanced , isnt it . And when we nuanced, isnt it . And when we were talking to the Health Secretary earlier on, i mean, he was not wanting essentially not wanting to go against the israeli line on this, that they feel the blockade is necessary. Feel the blockade is necessary. Well, yes, its a wicked problem, isnt it, because gaza has been in a dreadful condition ever since almost israel became israel. Its a very degraded environment, as we know, very , environment, as we know, very, very overcrowded. 2. 3 million in palestine , indians in an area palestine, indians in an area about a third. The size of greater london, very poor resources anyway. They things resources anyway. They things like sewage in the street , like sewage in the street, water, electricity at the best of times only 12, 13 hours a day at actually what Stephen Barclay by not answering the question was indicating how very very difficult its all going to be. Now, what is the Israeli Ground operation going to be . We know what the objective is that theyre going to try to root out hamas , get into the bunkers , get hamas, get into the bunkers, get into their deep underground systems where theyre not only preparing these rockets, but where they they can fire them from. Its almost the wicked problem is the terrible plight of the civilian ones there. Not all of whom and far from all of whom are in complete support of hamas that have been running a dictatorship there since. Since dictatorship there since. Since two thousand and seven. And i think at the moment, the problem for israel is that they need to go in. The implication is that they will have to occupy for quite a time. Thats very, very quite a time. Thats very, very difficult in all kinds of urban warfare of this kind. Warfare of this kind. And robert , this is whats and robert, this is whats going to be discussed. We know theres been this first meeting of the emergency war cabinet in israel, this new coalition then of netanyahu and the of Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of the opposition there. But as you say, very difficult for them because youve got this rhetoric them that theyre rhetoric from them that theyre going to wipe hamas the face going to wipe hamas off the face of earth, that hamas of the earth, that every hamas member man. Of the earth, that every hamas member man. But hamas member is a dead man. But hamas doesnt uniform , does it . Doesnt wear a uniform, does it . Its there. Its infiltrated its there. Its infiltrated with the community in gaza, with civilians in gaza. So how will they be able to distinguish between terrorists and civilians asindeed between terrorists and civilians as indeed , ali, the problem is as indeed, ali, the problem is how it is impacted. How it is impacted. Indeed, as you have said, in the population there, which makes things very difficult. And hamas, of course, as we have just discovered subsequently only in the past few days since these awful atrocities and attacks, its got a very powerful infrastructure outside inside gaza, outside the region, bitcoin raising probably over a billion dollars just to prepare for this very one offensive, a very powerful leadership in doha. Its extremely difficult to track. And of course, it has to track. And of course, it has the broad and often very ill informed sympathy, quite across large amounts of the arab world. It experience. Ive had personal experience of that being on the tallies in the gulf. In fact dont get in the way of raw emotion there that is a huge problem. But lets go back to this. This new coalition, which is fascinating because you have benny gantz , the leader of the benny gantz, the leader of the opposition, now there, and you have people like general eisenkot advising. They have had direct experience of the terrible defeat , direct experience of the terrible defeat, royalties of the war against hamas, which has been there since it virtually it beganin been there since it virtually it began in 1987, a very powerful organisation committed to a totally unrealistic aim of wiping out israel. Well, this is wiping out israel. Well, this is the problem is that you know, that its a dialogue of the deaf anditsl that its a dialogue of the deaf and its i know we shouldnt. Its so far down the line. But within the area of greater israel now, i was calculating within a couple of hundred thousand, the people of arab origin and the people of jewish origin and the people of jewish origin are completely equally balanced. Now, how are we going to manage that . That is what were going to need to hear from people like joe biden and Antonio Gutierrez and the eu leadership quite soon down the line because so far its just a last kind of band aid to say , last kind of band aid to say, oh, we can get a few hundred thousand out getting people out of civilians that are in the way out of the gaza strip is near impossible. Okay , robert, we shall speak okay, robert, we shall speak to you again on this. No doubt, very soon. Thank you very much indeed. Now, the labour conference is overin now, the labour conference is over in liverpool and labour have made some pledges on housing, taxes and the nhs. Yeah , but is it enough to yeah, but is it enough to give sir keir starmer the two terms in power that he says hes going to have . Hes been talking to our Political Editor , to our Political Editor, Christopher Hope. Christopher hope. Sir keir starmer, your wife and children are jewish. How concerned are you by the protests youve seen . Weve all seen london and across uk seen in london and across the uk in the past week. Very in the past week. Im very concerned are the family concerned and so are the family members and friends that ive spoken to. Prime referendum. If your Prime Minister , if your elected Prime Minister, if your elected Prime Minister, if your elected Prime Minister, youll be renegotiating trade and renegotiating the trade and Cooperation Agreement in 2026. What will you do with that . Will you try and get the uk more closely aligned to the would closely aligned to the eu . Would you try and reverse the you even try and reverse the result in 2016 and go back into the we will not try to the eu . We will not try to reverse the result. Do intend to go back we do not intend to go back into the eu and for that matter, or that matter, into the or for that matter, into the Single Market or the customs union. Doesnt mean dont union. That doesnt mean i dont think we improve on the deal think we can improve on the deal that got. And i think that weve got. And i think whether you at security that weve got. And i think whethhether at security that weve got. And i think whethhether look curity that weve got. And i think whethhether look atity that weve got. And i think whethhether look at arts obe, whether you look at arts and innovation or trade, almost everybody thinks theres room for improvement. We saw that to for improvement. We saw that to an extent in the protocol that the Prime Minister renegotiated and renegotiated earlier this year. And renegotiated earlier this year. Were not arguing. Year. But were not arguing. Were not making the case. There is no intention to return to the eu. And do you get brexit . Do you understand why the vote happened . Understand happened . Do you understand the reason the first reason for brexit in the first place . Think behind the vote place . I think behind the vote was a deep sense across the country of an inability to influence once things in their own lives, their own communities. And thats why yesterday was so important for me to set out a case which said, look , weve had case which said, look, weve had 13 years of decline and now im putting on the table ten years of national renewal. You said in your speech youre proudly working class, but you dont like called but you dont like being called sir parliament. Whats sir keir in parliament. Whats the well theres no problem. Im very proud of my upbringing and the story i was telling yesterday about working class aspirations is really the story of my life, which is starting, you know, from modest beginnings. We had trouble making ends meet as a family , making ends meet as a family, but i had opportunity to go on a journey that took me to standing here with you as leader of the opposition. I want every young person to have that opportunity i but youre now called sir keir starmer. That makes you keir starmer. That makes you look quite out of touch to the average person. Well, is that the is that why you the problem . Is that why you worry about it . Was knighted for my i was knighted for my services to criminal justice because was the director of because i was the director of pubuc because i was the director of Public Prosecutions for five years the staff worked years and the staff who worked for staff, were very for me had 7000 staff, were very proud to see that through, that their work was recognised. So proud to see that through, that theiveryk was recognised. So proud to see that through, that theivery proud recognised. So proud to see that through, that theivery proud forognised. So proud to see that through, that theivery proud for them id. So proud to see that through, that theivery proud for them of so proud to see that through, that theivery proud for them of what im very proud for them of what we achieved at the small boats crisis on the south coast of england. Immigration regularly tops the polls. The issue for gb the polls. The big issue for gb news. Yeah, barely news viewers. Yeah, barely mentioned in your speech though. Is because youre not is that why . Because youre not concerned not concerned about it . Not a problem you become prime problem if you become Prime Minister course were concerned minister it. Course were concerned minister it. Icourse were concerned minister it. I think were concerned minister it. I think anybody ncerned minister it. I think anybody would ed about it. I think anybody would be a government be concerned by a government thats control the thats lost control of the border that has to be border is that has to be addressed. And thats why we set out in terms that we have to smash the criminal that smash the criminal gangs that are trade. Go are running this vile trade. Go back days as director of back to my days as director of pubuc back to my days as director of public prosecution. Did joint public prosecution. I did joint operations is to terrorist operations is to smash terrorist gangs. I am convinced we can smash the gangs that are running this file. Illegal immigration. What level are you happy with of the net number 600,000 arrived in the 12 months to june last year. Well im not going to pluck a number out of the sky. The tories do every well. They do, and then they miss it over and over again. Weve over and over again. And weve ended a situation where ended up with a situation where the is higher its the number is higher than its ever this is ever been. But this is symptomatic, think, of the symptomatic, i think, of the last 13 years. One of the challenges that we laid down for the yesterday us the tories yesterday is tell us what your record is, because if youve record 13 youve got a record after 13 years, you should be telling the country so thats country what it is. So thats why contrasted them with our why i contrasted them with our project, which is actually thats not just fix the country, lets go on this journey of national renewal. And i cant national renewal. And i cant stress it enough. Its a national journey. It is cross party. We, you know, those cross party. We, you know, those that have lost faith in the party, they are voting for are welcome to join us in this national project. In your speech, talked in your speech, you talked about tax regime. About a competitive tax regime. Does that mean a Labour Government taxes . Government could cut taxes . Competitive tax well, i said competitive tax regime. Well, look, weve got the highest rates of tax that weve had since the Second World War under this government. So all from this all weve got from this government tax and government is high tax and low growth that is the wrong growth and that is the wrong recipe for the country. Competitive of course. But my focus is on growth and growing the economy and that will the tax rate come down . My speech, will the tax burden come down on labour . Like the overall burden, id like the overall burden, particularly people, particularly on working people, to but obviously we to come down, but obviously we will course , and will operate, of course, and always within our fiscal rules. Always within our fiscal rules. Yeah, just on the on the, the glitter bomb, i know its a serious issue, but call it a glitter bomb. Have you have the security apologise to you for letting you down . Frankly i my focus was on delivering that speech and many people have said to me what was going through your head . Ill tell you what was and ill tell you what was going through my head. It was i have worked for years to have worked for four years to get this labour party to a position where we can face the country address the country. Country and address the country. And wasnt to be put off and i wasnt going to be put off by idiot who on the by some idiot who came on the stage. I took jacket off, stage. So i took my jacket off, rolled sleeves and got on rolled up my sleeves and got on with delivering that with delivering the speech that ive a long time to give. Well take your time. Were getting wet in the rain here. Thank for joining getting wet in the rain here. Thank forjoining us. Thank thank you for joining us. Thank you. You your time. You. Thank you for your time. Well, lets get some reaction to from our political to that from our political correspondent, catherine foster. Good catherine. Good morning to you, catherine. So ranging there, so wide ranging interview there, sir keir starmer to Christopher Hope, bombing brexit hope, glitter bombing, brexit and the labour and of course, the labour conference. There conference. You were there in liverpool for the whole conference for us on gb news. Would you say it was a success . Yes , very much a success. Yes, very much a success. I was there at labour conference in liverpool and at concerts of conference in manchester the week before. There was a very different feel at those two conferences. Conservatives and a lot of the speeches, the much smaller hall was half empty, except for rishi sunak. Obviously there was a lot of positioning for rishi sunaks job. Lots of mps think that hes already lost the next election, but at labour there was a real sense of energy and momentum and optimism , belief that they are optimism, belief that they are are on course to form the next government in a roundabout, a years government in a roundabout, a years time. So sir Keir Starmers speech, obviously the highlight, the glitter his team were quite shaken. It could have been a lot worse and real worries about what went wrong and questions about security. I think. But i and questions about security. I think. But i think it and questions about security. I think. But i think it reflected think. But i think it reflected very well on him the way that he dealt with it. And he didnt seem fazed. He took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and said, we are interested in power, not protest. If he thinks that bothers me, he doesnt know me. And then gave what i think me. And then gave what i think is widely recognised as the best speech. Hes ever given. Talking about getting britains future back, about building for green jobs, green energy, and about building houses. Obviously we need a lot of houses and a huge numbers of young people worried. Theyre never going to get on the property ladder. So lots to appeal to voters across the political spectrum and appealing directly to disaffected conservative voters, saying come over to labour. Of course, one thing we do know, catherine, is this is going to be a fiscal election. Its all to going be based on money. Weve just had the latest gdp figures out, havent we . What are they telling us . Yes. So the economy grew. By yes. So the economy grew. By 0. 2 in august. Thats according to the office for national statistics. It fell by 0. 6 in statistics. It fell by 0. 6 in july. But over the last three months its grown modest, oddly, now. Okay. I dont think thats going to have a massive knock on effect. Were not really going to feel that. But basically its only a few months ago since there were all these predictions that we would be in a two year long recession. So its certainly good news. I think the government will be taking credit for it. They will be hoping that the economy continues to improve , that inflation continues to come down, and that we all start to feel better off soon. But of course, war in the middle east, theres no way of knowing inflation might be rising shortly again , mightnt it . Shortly again, mightnt it . Okay , catherine, thanks very okay, catherine, thanks very much indeed. Much indeed. Still to come, well be debating whether we should ban buying second homes as the number of wealthy elite purchasing holiday lets on the coast increases. Thats n ext next its 731 morning to you. This is breakfast with stephen and ellie. Now, residents of picturesque seaside villages are up in arms over the wealthy elite buying second houses in their home towns where they dont intend to live permanently. Yet property prices in places like salcombe in devon have dramatically increased over recent times, where houses can now go for well over £1 million. While some local authorities are now imposing kerbs to limit the amount of outsiders that can buy in the area. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So should we ban second homes . What do you think . Lets get the views of property expert russell quirk actor model russell quirk and actor model sarah wingrove. Good to see you both this morning. Sarah do they need to go or are they just, you know, a good investment, a nice houday know, a good investment, a nice holiday for home people. Yes holiday for home people. Yes i do think they should be banned. Do think they should be banned. Its lovely that you might be in a position where you can afford to buy a second home. But if , say, 80, 90 of the time if, say, 80, 90 of the time its going to be sat empty, then thats not fair. On those of us who are trying to get onto the property ladder and are just trying to afford to actually have their own home, have one home, let alone two, three. So i think its about being fair to russell. What do you make of that . What do you make of that . What do you make of that . I just think as a country, we need to stop banning things. You need to stop banning things. You know, when we hear politicians in the run up to elections, all we seem to hear is , you know, we seem to hear is, you know, were going to ban this. Were going to ban that, stop this, stop it smacks to me of stop that. It smacks to me of kind a rather china type kind of a rather china type mentality. And reality is mentality. And the reality is that it comes second that when it comes to second homes, less than 5 of homes, something less than 5 of homes, something less than 5 of homes in those coastal areas are actually sold to second home buyers. And actually, despite the fact that , stephen, youre the fact that, stephen, youre right, there are certain parts of the country that are benefiting from big property pnces benefiting from big property prices because theyre desirable areas. Theres no evidence whatsoever ever that the demand for second homes specifically has in itself increased property prices. I just think that this is this is a lovely headline for in particular the labour party to be able to grab. But it does smack to me, frankly, of the politics of envy. And really, i politics of envy. And really, i mean, i thought we were a free market country , which means you market country, which means you let markets resolve themselves because pause in history, particularly with the Property Market when we intervene in it, when we manipulate it like we did with, for instance, the stamp duty holiday during the pandemic. And like we have with help buy that intervention help to buy that intervention then generally doesnt end very well. I just think weve got to leave these things alone. Okay. So sarah, politics. Politics of envy. You know, politics of envy. You know, five, 5 of these areas, its not its not creating. Russell would say these these ghost towns that perhaps youd get from the suggestion is from the headunes. Headlines. I personally think that that is not someone that has actually experienced what it is like. I experienced what it is like. I think we can rely on statistics, call it a political issue, but when youre actually physically in these sorts of scenarios, then you see it from a completely different perspective. I myself, im still living at home with my parents because there is a lack of housing in there is a lack of housing in the town that i grew up in where my family and friends are, where i work , because there is i work, because there is a distinct lack of housing and ive met people who have got second homes here where i live , second homes here where i live, and they only use the property maybe once a month to bring the grandchildren to come and visit. And thats lovely. Good for them. But for someone like them. But for someone like myself , that means them. But for someone like myself, that means its making it impossible to move out to start my life and i think there does need to be some sort of monitoring of this. I understand Like Properties being used for business purposes like airbnb, as long as they are, you know , as long as they are, you know, monitored correctly. But just to monitored correctly. But just to literally sit empty is just completely pointless. Basically okay, well, look, you both make valid points. Russell. Sarah, were going to leave it there. Thank you very much indeed. So we throw it over to you now. What do you think . Let us know. Gb views us gbnews. Com. Wed love to hear from you. Its time to through well, its time to go through all latest sports news next. All the latest sports news next. And paul coyte is here with us. Morning to you. Ive got few morning to you. Ive got a few bits and pieces for you. Morning to you. Ive got a few bitswalesiieces for you. Morning to you. Ive got a few bitswales beat for you. Morning to you. Ive got a few bitswales beat gibraltar 4 0. It wales beat gibraltar 4 0. It was but i mean if was a friendly but i mean if youre going to play against gibraltar offence to gibraltar with no offence to gibraltar, was going to gibraltar, but i was going to say i could offence. Say i could take offence. Im very fond of gibraltar. Know. I mean five of the players are monkeys anyway and youre having to play a rock. Its having to play on a rock. Its not easy, anyway, they not very easy, but anyway, they managed 4 0 over. No they give over portland, though over scores. Portland, though have tonight. Have a very tricky game tonight. Theyre spain. Theyre playing in spain. Theyve so far. Theyve been brilliant. So far. Scotland, theyve played 515 in the qualifiers for the Europa League and basically where they are now is theyve got to beat. If they just get a point against spain. Spain are obviously unbelievable Football Team and you know the theyve you know the fact theyve already beaten 2 0 already. Already beaten them 2 0 already. But thats going to be but anyway thats going to be very tricky. Thats for them in seville. With seville. Are you familiar with Rassie Erasmus . No, no, not familiar with razs work. Rassie erasmus is the head of rugby for south africa. He was the coach there and hes got a hes got a mouth on him and he always seems to cause a fair bit of problem. Um, hes had bands as the director of rugby for criticising referees. This has criticising referees. This has happened a few times and hes also started this light situation, whereas hes actually had traffic lights where all the coaches sit to try and alert players in what they should be doing. Latest thing that he said he started because south africa are playing france in the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup at the weekend. Hes now said that the french simulate injuries and basically what hes doing is that the referees have got to be stronger with them all hes doing is just trying to wind it up get the referees, wind it up and get the referees, you know, uncomfortable all about hes doing, about what hes doing, start waving baguette waving a baguette about. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Hes rassie. Hes just razs trouble, you know, so razs just causing a little bit of trouble. Good night, though. It is a great name. Raymond i hate to leave it there, paul i hate to leave it there, paul, but well see a bit more in the next hour. Ill tell you what, just very briefly, ill tell you why i like gibraltar so much, why you shouldnt be rude about gibraltar. I know it wasnt rude. Is i know it wasnt rude. It is gibraltar. The most british place it is the most british place you its more you can ever go. Its more british britain. British than britain. True. Thats true. Thats true. And its fabulous. And its fabulous. And its got a cute little monkeys as hasnt it . Monkeys as well, hasnt it . Well, theyre bit vicious. Well, theyre a bit vicious. Oh are they . You just keep your distance. Oh, im not. Oh, im not. Maybe then still to maybe not. Then still to come, with us. The uk and come, stay with us. The uk and the eu has told social media sites deal with the 7. 42. Good morning. This is good morning. This is breakfast with stephen and ellie and were going to go through the papers in more detail this morning. Were joined by norman baker, former liberal democrat minister and carver, columnist at and emily carver, columnist at conservative home and one of our own one of our own. Its very gb news presenter. Harper, good news presenter. Harper, good morning to you both. Very good morning to you both. Very good to see you. Many hats indeed. Emily. Lets have a look at the guardian, shall we . And well continue, shall we, on the israel gaza coverage. This is uk and the eu telling social media that they need to do more to deal with misinformation. Yes, this is very interesting because last night as well, when i was scrolling through twitter, now x , i saw that there had been now x, i saw that there had been a bit of a to and fro in public between elon musk and the tech representative of the eu, of the Eu Commission, basically talking about this issue of misinformation and violent content around the israel Hamas Conflict , content around the israel Hamas Conflict, which is playing out on our screens. And there are on our screens. And there are the most well, there are pictures of barbarity , violent pictures of barbarity, violent videos, of course , theres so videos, of course, theres so much misinformation going around. Everyone can have an opinion and it slapped there. And you dont know how to differentiate from the truth and whats not the truth. Videos that are on verified, its very, very difficult indeed. So the uk government Michelle Donelan and the Eu Commission are trying to do something about this. Theyre meeting with x and meta, which of course owns facebook and instagram. How they can deal with this. I its a difficult one, isnt it . Because you dont want to censor the real content and you dont know what is misinformation today may prove to be true tomorrow. So its to be true tomorrow. So its very difficult indeed. And i very difficult indeed. And i dont know where you draw the line and how they can deal with this. Well, i mean, its not its difficult. Its not impossible. And the difference is that elon musk, of course, has sacked a whole lot of are doing checks of people who are doing checks on was actually accurate, on what was actually accurate, not you know, some not accurate. So you know, some of some of of these some of these companies, social Media Companies, social Media Companies irresponsible, in companies, social media conview,es irresponsible, in companies, social media conview, in irresponsible, in companies, social media conview, in the rresponsible, in companies, social media conview, in the wayyonsible, in companies, social media conview, in the way they le, in companies, social media conview, in the way they behave. My view, in the way they behave. And its very different to how television this television behaves in this country. With the gb country. You know, with the gb news bbc anyone else, news or the bbc or anyone else, you subject to proper you know, are subject to proper standards regulated by ofcom. And an obligation to and theres an obligation to present things accurately and fairly. But how do you regulate something which is across all territories . Territories . You mean in terms of whats happening overseas . You mean in terms of whats hapwell,g overseas . You mean in terms of whats hapwell, you erseas . You mean in terms of whats hapwell, you know, . You mean in terms of whats hapwell, you know, we cant well, you know, we cant regulate it in this country because its what happens because its then what happens to posting in a to someone whos posting in a different country . You can actually well, well, you can actually introduce legislation which has been about level or been talked about at eu level or uk to require to require uk level to require to require these companies to behave in a responsible manner to and fine them if they dont behave. The only problem, the one not the only problem, the one not the only problem, the one not the only problem, but one of the problems is that, of course the media different that media is so different now that people reporting the news people are reporting the news with mobile phones and with their mobile phones and that has democratised our media landscape in many good ways because anyone can be a reporter now. But also it challenges the broadcast ecology and what we know about misinformation , know about misinformation, action. And this is quite interesting because musk, elon musk did challenge the woman from the European Commission who put out this this statement saying we list the violations, you allude to on x so that the pubuc you allude to on x so that the public can see them. So is he public can see them. So is he doubting that they exist east or does he want what exactly is he saying there . Because hes definitely challenging. Yeah, he definitely challenging. Yeah, he wants it to be a free speech space. The greatest extent. And thats thats the thing. You dont want to you dont want to cap free speech. But this free speech is not the same as misinformation. No, no, its not. No. No. Well, is it . Well, is it . It is. I think it is. But but its a fine line, isnt it . This is this is the trouble. Is the this is the trouble. Yeah. Mean, just as how yeah. I mean, just as how some see hamas , god some people see hamas, god forbid, Freedom Fighters , forbid, as Freedom Fighters, some people see one piece of information and think its the truth. You find out later that maybe it was and it has already been removed. You dont its very difficult for these Tech Companies be the arbiters of companies to be the arbiters of what is true what is not. What is true and what is not. Yeah. Yeah. And think there should and do you think there should be warnings about this graphic content were on content that were seeing on social media . Well, that runs the whole way that internet is or isnt that the internet is or isnt policed, to be honest with you. And whole issue about, for and the whole issue about, for instance, which crosses instance, child, which crosses boundanes instance, child, which crosses boundaries as anything boundaries as much as anything else. Is there is else. So there is there is a need. And i think the Tech Companies themselves have said this theres a need for regulation. I think mark zuckerberg, for example, for example, please give example, has said, please give us regulation so we where us a regulation so we know where were going. So theres were going. And so theres a duty. Think, governments duty. I think, on governments across to world come across the to world come together to regulate more accurately. Mean, facebook accurately. I mean, facebook posts that you can see in this country, see in country, you cant see in canada, example, that right . Yeah. So theyre about controversial issues. Canada has quite a censorious environment. So are different you so there are different you countries that are doing this differently. Differently. Right . Right . Well, perhaps well come to a conclusion on that. But thats sort of doubt it, norman. Lets look at the ai. Should we and Keir Starmers promises . Keir starmers promises . Well, this kind of feeds into the debate you were having a moment ago about second homes and the Arlene Foster way, because do we have enough homes for people in this country . No, we dont. Are a whole lot occupied second homes are not. Occupied a second homes are not. Not for local people. Yes, they are. But i mean, whats worrying about me about keir about for me about Keir Starmers policy is twofold. First of all, hes saying he wants take away power from wants to take away power from local people to decide what goes in their own area and to move it up the chain, either to some sort of regional thing or to a Central Government to decide where should well where housing should go. Well thats very dangerous thats a very dangerous thing when you start imposing developments people without developments on people without their so i think its their say so. So i think its not more dangerous. Norman, we have norman, that we have a housing well, thats my housing crisis. Well, thats my second point. Let come to second let me come to the second point. The second point is this what kind of housing are we getting . Because i go down on the lewes victoria the train to lewes from victoria and whole lot of new and theres a whole lot of new housing built there. Its housing being built there. Its 3 exclusive 3 or 4 bedroom exclusive buildings. These for buildings. These arent for local dont know who local people. I dont know who they are for, theyre not they are for, but theyre not meeting Housing Needs. So meeting local Housing Needs. So theres need to make theres a desperate need to make sure needs are sure local Housing Needs are built, and the fact built, are met. And the fact is that weve already planning that weve got already planning permission extant in the pipeline huge numbers of pipeline for huge numbers of houses being built by houses arent being built by developers. We need to developers. So we need to actually make sure the right kind housing is built and kind of housing is built and theres the labour theres no nothing in the labour speech that. Speech about that. But there were promises made on on taxes, on nhs on housing, on taxes, on the nhs that labour conference in that the labour conference in liverpool. Make liverpool. What did you make of emily. Think one of the yeah, i think one of the glaring omissions from rishi sunak speech at conservative Party Conference was the issue of and i think it was of housing and i think it was very smart move for keir starmer to highlight that, particularly as at the moment i saw a recent poll showing 1 of 18 to 24 year olds would vote conservative live. And i do think housing is one of the key reasons, particularly for millennials. So particularly for millennials. So older, older groups who are still in shared accommodation in their 30s, pretty miserable for a lot of young people when it comes to housing. Has been in touch, christine has been in touch, though. Hi, christine. It says if past if keir starmer strolled past the m25 five, hed see theres been so much building up and down the country. We are full. Yeah, there a of yeah, there is a lot of building, but our population has grown by 10 million. In how many years . 20 years. So you need to years . 20 years. So you need to have the housing and you need to have the housing and you need to have the housing and you need to have the infrastructure. You have the infrastructure. You know, people arent happy about it, but these are the facts of, of, of the country cannot be old fashioned. So what we need is council housing. We need local authorities efficiently funded to build housing for local needs. Have actually one needs. But we have actually one of of council housing. The issue is across the board. We need more of every housing. And this is why the idea of ripping up and watering down regulations is a down planning regulations is a good know how far good one. I dont know how far hes going to go reality hes going to go in reality because have a shortage because we have a shortage across of types of across the board of all types of housing. Not just housing. Its about not just wanting build isnt wanting to build up, isnt it . Have particular shortage we have a particular shortage of which is low cost , of housing, which is low cost, either rent or rent or for purchase for young people in their own areas. And thats the main concern. Thats your 1, emily, of who arent main concern. Thats your 1, emily,to who arent main concern. Thats your 1, emily,to vote. Who arent going to vote. But if you make more across the board, the price comes down. Well, thats what we need. We have of private have a shortage of private rental. Have a shortage rental. We have a shortage of starter have a starter homes. We have a shortage of for older shortage of homes for older people move into. We dont people to move into. We dont have of we just have have a shortage of we just have a shortage. Have a shortage of we dont have a shortage of for four and five bedroom exclusive thats exclusive houses. And thats whats being built. Okay. Well me ask you, okay. Well let me ask you, have any in your have you got any money in your purse, this morning . Purse, emily, this morning . Shaming me. No youre shaming me. No youre shaming me. No norman, have you got any money in your wallet . Ive got a wallet, but ive got some money in my pocket. Have you . You . Have you . Have you . Have you . Have you . You clearly have been well, you clearly have been able cashpoint at some able to use a cashpoint at some point, which, to according able to use a cashpoint at some poirmirror which, to according able to use a cashpoint at some poirmirror loads h, to according able to use a cashpoint at some poirmirror loads h, his, ccording able to use a cashpoint at some poirmirror loads h, his, wevelg the mirror loads of his, weve lost free cash points in 18 lost 3000 free cash points in 18 months. Yeah, this is quite serious because people still want cash a lot people want to use cash a lot of people want to use cash a lot of people want cash, particularly want to use cash, particularly perhaps, dare i say, elderly people want to use cash. Weve already banks weve already seen banks shutting for and shutting everywhere for and a whole of towns now have no whole lot of towns now have no banks. You have 15 banks. And if you have to go 15 or 20 to get to a bank, or 20 miles to get to a bank, thats not acceptable. So you desperately a cash point thats not acceptable. So you des;theyly a cash point thats not acceptable. So you des;they are a cash point thats not acceptable. So you des;they are being cash point thats not acceptable. So you des;they are being removed it thats not acceptable. So you des;they are being removed as and they are being removed as a mirror says 2900 have been have vanished in the last year. And what we still have, of course, are cash points where you pay to get money out, which find get your money out, which i find actually offensive pay money actually offensive to pay money to front charge get to get front 199 charge to get your out. Your money out. I presume there is an argument because they can monitor exactly what happens at these cash points. Presumably they take them out because they say theyre not being used. Well, they may that or or well, they may do that or or they may just decide actually. Well miles to well someone can go 15 miles to the one. Well make them go the next one. Well make them go further the money out and further to get the money out and well save money on this particular cash point. You know, the banks not the banks, the banks are not utilitarian organisations that look after public. Theyre utilitarian organisations that look. Toer public. Theyre utilitarian organisations that look. Toer aiblic. Theyre utilitarian organisations that look. Toer a lot . Theyre utilitarian organisations that look. Toer a lot ofheyre utilitarian organisations that look. Toer a lot of money for themselves. Maybe we need to have more of a situation. So its not a hybrid situation. So its not like dont like you dont need a traditional cash point, but you should able to get in your should be able to get it in your supermarket you do cash back. Supermarket or you do cash back. Can cash back, but not you can do cash back, but not everywhere. Yeah, i need to get cash the other day to get my nails done and yeah, thats of the only and yeah, thats one of the only places and couldnt. The places that and i couldnt. The cash was out of order cash point was out of order because other thing. Because thats the other thing. If down, if theyre not closed down, theyre out of order. And i said, where was the i was said, where was the next . I was walking i said, wheres the walking and i said, wheres the next one . A 20 minute next one . It was a 20 minute walk. And i said, i have walk. And i said, can i have cash back then, please . And they dont and then i dont do cash back. And then i was walking round the was just walking round all the shops get cash back. Shops trying to get cash back. It impossible just to get it was impossible just to get your nails get cash out. Your nails done, get cash out. Yeah. It is. Your nails done, get cash out. Yeaweve it is. Your nails done, get cash out. Yeaweve now got a situation weve now got a situation where some places will only take cards, including cup of cards, including for a cup of coffee and other places like my barber will only take yeah barber will only take cash. Yeah yeah, barber will only take cash. Yeah yeai, barber will only take cash. Yeah yeai mean, it drives you mad, actually. You dont use cash, do you . You dont use cash, do you . I dont really use cash. I dont really use cash. No, hes very techie. No, hes very techie. Is this one . Well because im too lazy to go and get it out, but really go anywhere but i dont really go anywhere that you. That needs you. Cant get it out. Cant get it out. Im all for these things, you know, the winter cleaning, know, when the winter cleaning, when winter cleaner when the winter cleaner comes, i just do make just transfer it. Do you make money on. Money on. Hes very modern. Hes very modern. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which quite handy but. Which is quite handy but. Which is quite handy but. People like a bit of cash but people like a bit of cash in wink, in hand. Wink, wink. Well, they do. Yeah, well. Well, they do. Yeah, they but you know, i know it drives. I know loads of people who get really frustrated. My window cleaner i just get my window cleaner to very keen. If i offered to be very keen. If i offered him a card. No i like to have cash with for homeless people. Yeah. I feel really bad if people come and theyre people come along and theyre say, and say, have you got any cash and you dont like to have you actually dont like to have a well, theres a few pounds, well, theres a debate youve got buskers now in the stations who who want the tube stations who who want the tube stations who who want the be the card machine that must be impacting the homeless community. Surely it must be people yeah. People carrying cash. Yeah. I mean, dont have a mean, they dont have a contactless machine. No, thats right. Noticed right. So i mean, ive noticed it. A lot less it. I certainly give a lot less than i used because dont than i used to because i dont carry the cash anymore. Yes thats true. And to money and i used to drop money in the boxes well. The charitable boxes as well. Yeah. Something the charitable boxes as well. Yeah. Getting, something the charitable boxes as well. Yeah. Getting, i something the charitable boxes as well. Yeah. Getting, i dontiething the charitable boxes as well. Yeah. Getting, i dont know, about getting, i dont know, using one of those machines. Using one of those tap machines. Know. I dont know. I dont know. Quite the same, is it . You worry about . You worry about . I know. We need to worry. I know. We need to worry. Yeah. What if they put in £100 or add zero on the end . £100 or add a zero on the end . Yeah. What do you at yeah. What do you do at church the church when you do the collection . You do a transfer collection . Do you do a transfer to priest . Collection . Do you do a transfer to do priest . Collection . Do you do a transfer to do you;t . Collection . Do you do a transfer to do you have to give. No, you collection . Do you do a transfer to haveou have to give. No, you collection . Do you do a transfer to have to have to give. No, you collection . Do you do a transfer to have to get, to give. No, you collection . Do you do a transfer to have to get, youjive. No, you collection . Do you do a transfer to have to get, youjive have you collection . Do you do a transfer to have to get, you jive have to u do have to get, you do have to get out for that. Get cash out for that. You. If you remember they do you. If you remember they do have card collections in some churches now. Yeah do. Do have card collections in some churciies now. Yeah do. Do have card collections in some churcii haventeah do. Do have card collections in some churcii havent seen do. Do have card collections in some churcii havent seen one do. Do have card collections in some churcii havent seen one in. Yeah. I havent seen one in mine, i yeah. Mine, so i just. Yeah. So you dont thats just so you just dont thats just shame in public. Shame to me now in public. Going to have to thats going to have to change. Well catch with you change. Well catch up with you to later on. Thank to a little bit later on. Thank you much indeed. Very good morning to you. Welcome gb news welcome to your latest gb news weather you by weather update brought to you by the im alex burkill the met office. Im alex burkill and today looking and whilst today is looking largely of the largely dry with the best of the sunshine in the north, we do have some wet weather arriving later on. More in later on. More on that in a second. Moment weve got second. At the moment weve got a cloudy picture across many southern rain, most of outbreaks of rain, but most of that away further north outbreaks of rain, but most of that a away further north outbreaks of rain, but most of that a of ay further north outbreaks of rain, but most of that a of frost. Ther north outbreaks of rain, but most of that a of frost. First1orth after a touch of frost. First thing, is going to be largely thing, it is going to be largely bright. Plenty of sunshine across ireland and across Northern Ireland and Northern England in particular, and across and some sunny spells across scotland the risk scotland too. But also the risk of showers, particularly of a few showers, particularly towards the far north and towards the far north orkney and shetland will be down a temperatures will be down a little bit compared to yesterday, especially in the south, bit cloud south, with quite a bit of cloud around getting the high around getting into the high teens. Then as we go teens celsius. Then as we go through this evening and overnight, be overnight, we are going to be attacked sides. Attacked from two sides. We have attacked from two sides. We have a pressure system towards a low pressure system towards the bring the north and that will bring a spell showery rain across spell of showery rain across parts scotland. But in parts of scotland. But its in the a swathe of the south. We have a swathe of very weather that will very wet weather that will spread much england spread across much of england and heavy and wales, bringing some heavy rain through the rain as we head through the early hours of friday morning because the because of the cloud and the rain, temperatures going rain, temperatures arent going to drop as much as they did last night. The night. So especially in the north, to be as north, its not going to be as chilly we go friday chilly as we go through friday itself. Then a very wet picture across much england across much of england and wales. There could be some flooding disruption to flooding and some disruption to travel. Watch out for some travel. So do watch out for some heavy rain and even some intense downpours southern downpours across most southern counties further north, counties to further north, across scotland and Northern Ireland. Showery picture, ireland. Its a showery picture, blustery and thats blustery at times and thats going to take the edge off those temperatures likely temperatures and theyre likely to normal for the time to be near normal for the time of year. But turning colder into this weekend. This weekend. Well, do you stay with us. Well have more on the humanitarian crisis engulfing the strip. Well have the gaza strip. Well have Charlie Peters the ground in Charlie Peters on the ground in tel aviv for us after this. Water, food and power to the gaza strip and continue its bombardment. Hospitals there say they are crumbling and ovennhelmed. The United Nations secretary general warns of a humanitarian crisis and has appealed to israel to allow aid into gaza. Well, the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to wipe hamas off the face of the earth as he joins forces with his political opponents to create an emergency. Wartime cabinet. Our reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv. Tel aviv. Israeli forces are gathering on the south of the country as a likely Ground Invasion into the gaza strip grows. Gaza strip grows. Meanwhile, king charles says he is appalled by and condemns the barbaric acts of terrorism in israel. Well have more details and analysis on Buckingham Palace response. In other news, the labour leader, sir keir starmer, tells gb news hes going to cut taxes for people on low incomes if he becomes Prime Minister id like the overall burden, particularly on working people, to come down, but obviously we will operate , of course, and will operate, of course, and always within our fiscal rules. And alex, has your weather. And alex, has your weather. Good morning. Whilst its going to turn mostly dry for many of us today, we do have some heavy rain arriving overnight. Ill have more later. And hes always here. Paul has got your sport. Well, he said so nicely as well. International break time. Wales won yesterday. Huge game for scotland this evening, playing in spain. England play playing in spain. England play australia tomorrow and its all about the Rugby World Cup at the weekend. Thank you. Im stephen dixon. Thank you. Im stephen dixon. Im Ellie Costello. And this is on. Is breakfast on. Gb news. Well, our main news this morning and the humanitarian crisis is escalating in gaza as israeli large scale Bombing Campaign continues to flatten entire areas. Their stated mission now is to wipe out hamas , which continues to fire rockets into israel. Diesel generators are now all that stand between the Palestinian People and a total blackout as israels blockade of the gaza strip prevents any aid getting in. Well, the un secretary general has said essential supplies of food, fuel and water must be allowed to reach civilians in gaza. Reach civilians in gaza. Palestinian Health Officials say 1200 people have died in israeli airstrikes in gaza. The toll from the hamas attack on israeli communities at the weekend is also 1200. Thats according to government officials. Well the united nafions officials. Well the United Nations says that the number of people displaced in gaza is now reaching 400,000. But gaza isnt the only front in this conflict. Another militant group , another militant group, hezbollah, lies just across israels northern border in neighbouring lebanon. Neighbouring lebanon. Well, this air raid siren sounded off in metula in northern israel, as reports of projectile fire came. In now , projectile fire came. In now, lord dannatt. Meanwhile, gazans are searching for bodies in khan younis in gaza. And see this younis in gaza. And see this woman here collapsing in grief. Its just i mean, this is the reality of the situation. An it doesnt matter what side of the conflict you stand on in a sense when it comes to civilians and see that woman at the top of that footage just collapsing in the street. It in collapsing in the street. It in absolute grief. Heres a young absolute grief. Heres a young child killed , badly injured and child killed, badly injured and clearly distraught over what has happened. Clearly distraught over what has happened. And this is where some happened. And this is where some of the issues are coming into play of the issues are coming into play now. And of course, there is a very clear argument for israel to be able to defend itself. Thats absolutely understandable. There are understandable. There are questions now, though, as to whether those aid corridors should be restored to gaza. Should be restored to gaza. Food, fuel supplies are all cut off at the moment. Food, fuel supplies are all cut off at the moment. And that is a real concern. Now, israel doesnt seem to be wanting to move on, that the United Nations is calling for those aid corridors to be restored. And as corridors to be restored. And as you look at the scale of the damage edge in these parts of gaza, civilian buildings, it would seem, being hit the argument is, of course, that hamas embeds itself within civilian structures. They use people as a human shield. And so people as a human shield. And so you can see both sides of the argument there, cant you, that suffering of civilians , but then suffering of civilians, but then israel needing to defend itself. Its heartbreak aching. And as for decades, of course, has been an impossible situation to resolve. And it only sets to get worse as that blockade continues. No food , fuel or water getting into food, fuel or water getting into those residents. There is in gaza. Well, earlier we spoke to the Health Secretary, Steve Barclay. We asked him if the uk barclay. We asked him if the uk government agrees with that appeal from the un to allow aid into gaza and to stop israels blockade. Blockade. Well, the uk is one of the biggest aid donors , of course, biggest aid donors, of course, in terms of gaza. We channel in terms of gaza. We channel that aid through the United Nations. We give about 10 of the aid. Our aid budget last year was £13 billion. So the uk has a proud record in terms of aid, but israel has to be able to defend itself from these terrorist atrocities. And we terrorist atrocities. And we also need to recognise that there are hostages currently in gaza that have been taken from israel and israel needs to be able to respond to that. Able to respond to that. Well, the foreign secretary is in israel and has been holding talks to show the uks support on the countrys war on hamas. But not long afterjames but not long after James Cleverly arrived, he was forced to flee to safety in a bomb shelter there, as air raid sirens warned of incoming rockets in southern israel. Rockets in southern israel. Well, the us secretary of state is also in israel to demonstrate americas support for the country. For the country. Anthony blinken is also due to meet the palestinian president , who we should clarify president , who we should clarify is not connected to hamas. Is not connected to hamas. Mahmoud abbas leads the Fatah Movement, but the party that controls the west bank. Whereas hamas controls gaza. Im going with a very simple and clear message on behalf of the president of the United States and on behalf of the american people, and that is that the United States has israels back. We have the back of the israeli people. We have their today. Well have it their back today. Well have it tomorrow. It every tomorrow. We will have it every day. Day. Well, 17 British National jews, including children, are dead or missing after the hamas attack on israel , while a 26 attack on israel, while a 26 year old british man who was working as a Security Guard at a Music Festival in israel when it was attacked by hamas on saturday, it has been confirmed as dead by his family. Jake marlow has been missing since the raid on the supernova festival. His mother, lisa, wrote on facebook that she and her family were heartbroken after hearing the crushing news. Also among those known to have died is 20 year old nathaniel young, who was serving in the israeli army when he was killed during hamas raid. He attended the same school as mr marlow. Marlow. And this picture you can see now is bernard cowan, who grew up around glasgow. And were told that he also died. Told that he also died. Well, in total, 1200 israelis have lost their lives since hamas launched its attacks on the country, with many remaining missing, feared kidnapped or dead. Well, israel is understandably angry beyond comprehension and is now seeing the largest signup of reservists to its military in years. Our to its military in years. Our reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv for us this morning. Tel aviv for us this morning. And whats happening on the border , because were hearing border, because were hearing about this absolute massing of troops along the border. Now, troops along the border. Now, charlie. Yeah thats right. Charlie. Yeah thats right. And its all the indicator is. And warnings of a likely Ground Invasion into the gaza strip. Are there hundreds of thousands of troops and large armoured convoys heading down into southern israel in recent days, gathering on that border just a few kilometres away from the fence where Hamas Terrorists broke through on saturday morning for those appalling attacks in an unprotected civilian areas that we saw throughout saturday. Whats interesting about the amassing of troops there is that while they gather that invading force, theyre also still trying to secure the area. In the last two days, hamas militants and terrorists have been killed in southern israel as they have gone to ground since arriving on saturday. And theyre still trying to secure places that they might use to launch attacks into the gaza strip with all the indicators of the invasion, are there , its not sure and its there, its not sure and its not clear that all the shaping and all the necessary preparation is there to launch that Ground Invasion. Idf commanders i spoke to yesterday said that you you cant just invade the most densely populated part of the world on a whim. In reaction in just a few days. It requires a huge logistical effort, an effort thatis logistical effort, an effort that is undennay now. But still requires a lot more work. Half a million troops will need to be kitted out. Hundreds of thousands of reservist have been activated. Many of them are flying in from the rest of the world. Israelis who Work Overseas now coming home to dwell , armed themselves and to dwell, armed themselves and to stand up to defend an existential threat, to israel. But the logistical train, the logistical strain sorry , that is logistical strain sorry, that is leading to those troops amassing on the south is being supported by those strikes in gaza. Hamas is capabilities, assets and people all being hit by the Israeli Air Forces over night at 4 am, we had reports of some strikes going down on naval forces that hamas has on the gaza strip. And that is really gaza strip. And that is really crucial, shaping for that likely Ground Invasion, which idf commanders tell me isnt going to happen in the next 24 hours based on the amount of preparation they still need to do. But as those forces gather , do. But as those forces gather, rockets still firing overhead, the idf home command said in the last few hours that they reckon the number of rockets being fired will now dip to around 200 to 400 a day. They just dont have the number of rockets that they had at the start where they they had at the start where they they let off 4500 rockets on saturday. So as rockets come in and forces prepare to go out, a unity government has been formed. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had this to say yesterday at that formation. Yesterday at that formation. Israel citizens of israel this evening, we israel citizens of israel this evening , we have this evening, we have established a National Emergency government. The people of israel are united. And today its government is. United government is. United and im saying here to everyone , one, we will wipe this everyone, one, we will wipe this thing called hamas, isis, gaza off the face of the earth. Off the face of the earth. It will cease to exist. It will cease to exist. It will cease to exist. This unity government comes at a time when israelis are defending their country on all fronts. Regular soldiers gathering in the south. And in the last hour, more reservists sent to secure the north as attacks come in from southern lebanon. Okay, charlie , for now, lebanon. Okay, charlie, for now, thanks very much indeed. Thanks very much indeed. Now, the United Nations and the eu have appealed to israel to end its blockade of gaza, which they say is illegal. Lets speak now to freelance journalist yotam confino. Very good to see you this morning. Yotam so this is what the united nafions yotam so this is what the United Nations and the eu are appealing. Theyre saying that cutting off food, fuel and water in gaza is illegal, but israel is continuing to hold firm , isnt continuing to hold firm, isnt it . It . It is. Israel is relentless when it comes to hitting hamas. It says it will hunt every hamas commander down when and if civilians are going to be killed in that hunt, then so be it. Thatis in that hunt, then so be it. That is israels position. Israel argues that, first of all, its not only israel that blocks the gaza strip. Egypt is also refusing to open their a corridor on their side of the border into gaza , something they border into gaza, something they have been criticised harshly for by the United States has put pressure on egypt to open the corridor for civilians, but they have refused to do so. But yes, israel insists that they now have scores to settle with hamas and especially in the light of the atrocities that weve seen now confirmed. We spoke about now confirmed. We spoke about this yesterday on this show , but this yesterday on this show, but that weve seen confirmed now from several sources official and eyewitnesses that hamas had. And im warning about Strong Language here. So for anyone whos sensitive should listen, the beheading of babies chopping off hands of women executing elderly , burning families inside elderly, burning families inside their homes, raping women and killing them, so , of course, killing them, so, of course, israel feels like they have no sympathy right now for gaza or or for hamas. Definitely not for hamas. Hamas. But its interesting, isnt it, that its easy to criticise israel for saying , you know, israel for saying, you know, that blocking this humanity , that blocking this humanity, korean aid and yet this is this is of hamas is making thing, isnt it . Because these threats the action has been so vile. The continuing threats are so vile. What sort of response can you expect. Expect. Thats the point that israel is trying to argue. Israel is is trying to argue. Israel is trying to tell the world that this is not a political organisation, its a death code. It is on par with Islamic State , probably even worse with what weve seen in the past couple of days , in the past couple of days, in the past couple of days. So when you have a terrorist organisation basically holding 2 Million People hostage and they commit atrocities on your side of the border, what are you to do . It is absolutely perfectly fine to argue that collective punishment it is illegal and that its not all right. Im not this is not my opinion. Im not getting involved in whats right or wrong. Im trying to explain each side and how they see it. Of civilians in gaza of course, civilians in gaza will be horrified. Theyve had nothing to do with these atrocities. They dont of atrocities. They dont many of them dont support hamas. Them dont even support hamas. Many didnt even live many of them didnt even live when hamas was elected in 2006. So its just an unbearable situation for both civilians in gaza and for civilians in israel. But obviously the civilians in gaza are now the ones under pressure because israel has finally secured the border. Its hunting down the last terrorists inside israel. And the bombing inside israel. And the Bombing Campaign will now be in gaza. So this is where the focus is shifting. The media is shifting its focus on gaza because this is where the humanitarian crisis is where the humanitarian crisis is unfolding. And lets touch upon yotam, the grave hostage situation in gaza as well over 100 people, israeli is still being held hostage. Ridge there. How do you hostage. Ridge there. How do you think Benjamin Netanyahu and this new israeli coalition, we know that they held that emergency war Cabinet Meeting this morning. How will they be this morning. How will they be focusing on getting those hostages out of gaza to its an impossible situation because if you say we are going to eradicate hamas, where does that leave the hostages . Leave the hostages . If you eradicate hamas and they are keeping your hostages in side gaza, then they will be killed. Its unless you can killed. Its unless you can somehow now go into gaza with soldiers and free them , of soldiers and free them, of course theres an option, but it is extremely unlikely that all of those civilians will and all these hostages will be saved in such a rescue operation. Its such a rescue operation. Its simply not realistic. Maybe some of them will be rescued. So they have two options now. Israel either negotiate with hamas to release thousands of palestinian prisoners from israeli jails and get the hostages back from gaza or continue this campaign against gaza and likely end up having most of the hostages killed somehow. So its an impossible situation, really. Impossible situation, really. Yes. Good to see you. Thank you very much indeed. I mean, its what strikes me from what youre saying was saying someone on the ground constantly was its an impossible situation which which it is. And you can understand absolute lutely the cause of the un to say youve got to allow aid into gaza and then you can absolutely understand the argument to say, well , these people are being well, these people are being held hostage by hamas. In held hostage by hamas. In effect, the vast majority of palestine liens are not hamas , palestine liens are not hamas, but. But what palestine liens are not hamas, but. But what do you do . I mean, i wouldnt even like to begin to answer that. And its you know, answer that. And its you know, a conflict and a problem which has had no solution over decades. And as people have said ,. And as people have said, including the government here, israel has a right to defend itself. If how far that right itself. If how far that right can go is a matter for international deliberation, isnt it . But at the moment, israel are determined to stand their ground. And as the government has said, theyre wipe hamas off the face of the earth. Earth. Now, the labour conference is overin now, the labour conference is over in liverpool and the opposition have made some pledges on housing taxes and the nhs. Yeah, but is that enough to give sir keir starmer two terms in power . Because thats what he said he wants. Hes been talking to our Political Editor, Christopher Hope, sir keir starmer, your wife and children are jewish. How concerned are you by the protests youve seen . Weve all seen and the uk seen in london and across the uk in the past week. Im very concerned and so are the family members friends the family members and friends that spoken to. Weve seen that ive spoken to. Weve seen this in london. We see it not infrequently. And theres a real infrequently. And theres a real sense of deep anxiety. Obviously in relation to the events in israel , the appalling, shocking israel, the appalling, shocking events this, you know, cold blooded murder of men, women and children in and its terrorism. Children in and its terrorism. And hamas bears the responsibility. But huge amount responsibility. But huge amount of anxiety. George, your speech here in liverpool, you mentioned brexit in your speech just once, but you said here in 2018 at the Party Conference that you werent ruling a second werent ruling out a second referendum. Prime referendum. If your Prime Minister, if your elected Prime Minister, if your elected Prime Minister be minister and youll be renegotiating trade and renegotiating the trade and Cooperation Agreement in 2026, what will you do with that . Will you try and get the uk more closely to the would closely aligned to the eu . Would you reverse the you even try and reverse the result in 2016 and go back into the eu . We will try to reverse we will not try to reverse the result, but not intend the result, but we do not intend to back into the eu and for to go back into the eu and for that matter, for that matter that matter, or for that matter , the Single Market the , into the Single Market or the customs union. Doesnt mean customs union. That doesnt mean i think we improve on i dont think we can improve on the weve got. And the deal that weve got. And i think whether you at think whether you look at security, whether look at security, whether you look at arts and innovation or trade, almost everybody thinks theres room for improvement. We saw that to an extent in the protocol that the Prime Minister renegotiated and renegotiated earlier this year. But were renegotiated and renegotiated earlier this year. But were not earlier this year. But were not arguing. Were not making the case. There is no intention to return to the eu. Do you get brexit . Do you understand the vote happened understand why the vote happened . Understand the reason . Do you understand the reason for in first place . For brexit in the first place . Think behind vote was i think behind the vote was a deep sense across the country of an inability to influence things in their own lives, their own communities. And thats why yesterday was so important for me to set out a case which said , look, weve had 13 years of decline. Now , look, weve had 13 years of decline. Now im putting on the table ten years of national renewal. Its also why you may renewal. Its also why you may have noticed i reached outside of the Conference Hall into the country and invited conservative voters and people who voted for other parties to join us to make this clear that this is a national project. Everybody who cares about their country cares about the future of their community is welcome to join us in what will be a national project. You said in your speech youre proudly working class, but you dont like being called sir parliament. Whats sir keir in parliament. Whats the problem now . Theres problem. Well, theres no problem. Im very of my upbringing and very proud of my upbringing and the story i was telling yesterday about working class aspiration is really the story of my life, which is starting, you know, from modest beginnings. We had trouble making ends meet as a family , making ends meet as a family, but i had opportunity to go on a journey that took me to standing here with you as leader of the opposition. I want every young person to have that opportunity i but youre now called sir keir starmer. That makes you look quite out of touch to the average person. Well, the problem is that why you worry about it. I was knighted for my services to criminal justice because i the director of because i was the director of pubuc because i was the director of Public Prosecutions for five years and staff work for years and the staff who work for me staff, were very me had 7000 staff, were very proud through that proud to see that through that their work was recognised. So im very proud for them of what we achieved. The small boats crisis on the south coast of england, immigration tops the immigration regularly tops the polls. Big for gb news polls. The big issue for gb news viewers. Barely mentioned viewers. Yeah, barely mentioned in though. That in your speech though. Is that why . Not why . Because youre not concerned about it . Not a problem become prime problem if you become Prime Minister no, of course were concerned about think anybody would about it. I think anybody would be by a government be concerned by a government thats of thats lost control of the border that be border is that has to be addressed and why we set addressed. And thats why we set out terms that we have to out in terms that we have to smash the criminal gangs that are this vile trade. Go are running this vile trade. Go back to my days director back to my days as director of pubuc back to my days as director of public did join public prosecution. I did join operation oceans to smash terrorist gangs. I convinced terrorist gangs. I am convinced we can smash the gangs that are running this file illegal immigration. What level are you happy with . Of the net number, 600,000 arrived in the 12 months to june last year. Im not going to pluck a number out of the sky. The tories do every well they do. And then they miss it over and over again. And weve ended up a situation where the up with a situation where the number than its ever number is higher than its ever been. This is symptomatic, i been. But this is symptomatic, i think, of the last 13 one think, of the last 13 years. One of challenges we laid of the challenges that we laid down for the tories yesterday is tell record is, tell us what your record is, because youve got record because if youve got a record after years, you should be after 13 years, you should be telling country what is. Telling the country what it is. So thats why i contrasted them with our project, which is actually thats not just fix the country. Lets go on this country. Lets go on this journey of national renewal. And i cant stress it enough. Its a national journey. It is cross party. You know, those cross party. You know, those that have lost faith in the party, they are voting for a welcome to join us in this national project. In your speech, you talked about a competitor live tax regime. That a labour regime. Does that mean a Labour Government could cut taxes . I competitive tax well, i said competitive tax regime weve got regime. Well, look, weve got the of tax that regime. Well, look, weve got the had of tax that regime. Well, look, weve got the had since of tax that regime. Well, look, weve got the had since the tax that regime. Well, look, weve got the had since the second world weve had since the Second World War under this government. So all weve got from this government is high tax and low growth and that is the wrong recipe country. Recipe for the country. Competitive of course. My competitive of course. But my focus is on growth and growing the economy and that will the tax burden come down . My speech, will a tax burden come down on labour . The overall burden, id like the overall burden, particularly people, particularly on working people, to down, obviously we to come down, but obviously we will of course , and will operate, of course, and always within our fiscal rules. Always within our fiscal rules. Yeah, just on the on the, the glitter bomb, i know its a serious issue, but call it a glitter bomb. Have you have the security apologise to you for letting you down . Frankly i, i my focus was on delivering that speech. And many people have said to me what was going through your head. And you was head. And ill tell you what was going head. It was i going through my head. It was i have worked for four years to get party to get this labour party to a position where face the position where we can face the country and address the country and wasnt to be put off and i wasnt going to be put off by some idiot who came on the stage. I took my jacket off, stage. So i took my jacket off, rolled sleeves and on rolled up my sleeves and got on with delivering the speech that ive been waiting a long time to give. Ive been waiting a long time to givnbethany keir starmer. Bethany elsey keir starmer. Were in rain were getting wet in the rain here. Thanks for joining were getting wet in the rain here. Thanks forjoining us. Thank you for time. Thats sir keir starmer talking to our Political Editor christopher of Christopher Hope. And lots of you to that on emails. You reacting to that on emails. Thank you so much for getting in touch us. In leeds, touch with us. Peter in leeds, good morning to you. Says, good morning to you. He says, tell that we havent tell sir keir that we havent had years decline. Had 13 years of decline. The economy until economy was very healthy until covid. Government made the covid. The government made the mistake locking down. Mistake of locking down. Interesting. Well keep your thoughts coming through on that. On israel situation. Eddies on the israel situation. Eddies beenin on the israel situation. Eddies been in touch and said israel is because weve talked about the humanitarian corridors and civilian casualties in the gaza strip. Its hugely problematic. Strip. Its hugely problematic. Eddie says israel is at war in world war ii. When hitler was trying to wipe the uk off the face of the earth, we bombed dresden and the like with inaccurate bombs, killing hundreds of thousands of civilian ones. It is inevitable andits civilian ones. It is inevitable and its harsh but true. And its harsh but true. Absolute desperate situation, isnt it . Really, really difficult. All right. All your thoughts. Very welcome this morning. Gb views gbnews. Com. Do stay with us. Were going to more on king charles and to have more on king charles and his Public Statement condemning hamas thats hamas as terrorists. Thats after this is it is 829. Good morning to you. This is breakfast with stephen and ellie. Now king charles seen here on a recent visit to israel , has released a statement saying he is appalled by and condemns the barbaric acts of terrorism in israel. Well, the palace said King Charless thoughts and prayers are with all of those suffering, particularly those whove lost loved ones. But also those actively involved. Actively involved. And lets get some reaction to this from vanity fair royal editor and author of the new royals. Katie nicholl. Always very good to see you , katie. Very good to see you, katie. Good morning. And what did you make of this statement . Because make of this statement . Because it was rare, if not the first of its kind in the sense that it was so strongly worded. Was so strongly worded. I think it had to be strongly worded. We were at the palace yesterday for a separate briefing about kenya because the king going to king and queen are going to kenya month. Kenya later on this month. And of you cannot be there of course, you cannot be there at a meeting like that and not raise israel and i think there was a sense that we hadnt heard anything from the monarch. I think suffering. Think people are suffering. People feeling this this people are feeling this this there very, dark mood there is a very, very dark mood in country is a sense in our country is a great sense of sadness. I think at of sadness. And i think at moments this, we do look to moments like this, we do look to our to sort of pull us our monarch to sort of pull us together as a nation to try and find some sense of hope in all of this. And it makes me think back to the coronation and having all those faith leaders there at the coronation in the kings absolute emphasis, not just as king, since the accession, but as prince of wales, to have that importance on interfaith dialogues. Mean, on interfaith dialogues. I mean, these pictures him these are the pictures of him back in israel in 2020 when he visited just israel, but the visited not just israel, but the palestinian well. Palestinian territories as well. Hes passionate about this hes hes passionate about this area. Hes passionate about trying to bring peace to this area. Yesterday, we know he spent time on the on the telephone speaking to the president israel and king telephone speaking to the pr jordan. Israel and king telephone speaking to the pr jordan. Butirael and king telephone speaking to the pr jordan. But iael and king telephone speaking to the pr jordan. But i thinkd king telephone speaking to the pr jordan. But i think his king of jordan. But i think his statement was strong to speak about barbaric acts of terrorism, a word that the bbc hasnt used. And yet we are heanng hasnt used. And yet we are hearing it from our sovereign is incredibly hard hitting. And of course, we also had a statement from the prince and princess of wales as well. Yeah, on on the yeah, just just on on the king, though, before we talk about william and catherine, because their comments are important he he important as well. Well, he he has in his statement the has said in his statement the thoughts and prayers with all of those suffering. So in one sense, hes hes hes singled hamas out as a terrorist organisation, which it is. But he that also reflects those civilian suffering in gaza as well. So, of course, the innocent palestinians whose lives are being turned upside down. And i think that that is very important to charles. Hes not seen to be taking sides. He doesnt want to be accused of being political. But this is a humanitarian crisis that is affecting hundreds of thousands of people on both sides i and what about william and catherine . Well, i think youre right, stephen. I mean, it was a pretty powerful statement. I almost think that william and catherines statement went further than kings because catherines statement went furthntheym kings because catherines statement went furthnthey talked ings because catherines statement went furthnthey talked aboutbecause catherines statement went furthnthey talked about was use what they talked about was israels right of self defence, something i think people something i think most people wouldnt quite wouldnt argue with, but quite unusual to hear the generals venturing into that slightly politic territory. But again, you know, the prince of wales has visited israel and the palestinian territories. That was back in, i think, 2018. And that was a historic visit. I went to jerusalem, to bethlehem , you know, and into the palestinian territories as well. So these are two of the most senior royals with an innate understanding of the complexity edges of this region. Edges of this region. Is this is this a sign . Sorry is this a sign of the modernising of the British Royal family with this reaction . Because you look back to the late queen elizabeth, she a Statement Like this would never. It wouldnt. It wouldnt. No, i think youre right. Of those affected and it probably it would have ended there. Yeah, i completely agree with you. And we are seeing you. And i think we are seeing a more modern monarchy and monarchy to monarchy that is prepared to speak i think thats speak out and i think thats what seeing the what youre seeing both with the king and with the future king. But why is it seen as and it is seen as controversial by some that, say william would say israel to israel has a right to self defence, hence that shouldnt in reality be controversial, should it should apply every sovereign state . Apply to every sovereign state . Yes, i think so. Apply to every sovereign state . Yes, i think so. But i think at this time when tensions are running so high and you see this on social media with many of the celebrities that are that are posting support it posting their their support it and are getting attacked by and then are getting attacked by the palestinian side. So the by the palestinian side. So i think its very delicate territory to navigate. But i actually think those statements were well worded. I think they were well worded. I think they hit the right and i do hit the right note. And i do think that people wanted to hear from their monarch. Nicholl , always really katie nicholl, always really good thank you so good to see you. Thank you so much. Coming in. Good to see you. Thank you so mu okay coming in. Good to see you. Thank you so mu okay , coming in. Good to see you. Thank you so mu okay , lets coming in. Good to see you. Thank you so mu okay , lets have ming in. Good to see you. Thank you so mu okay , lets have m bit in. Good to see you. Thank you so mu okay , lets have m bit of a okay, lets have a bit of a gear change. Should we have a look sport with breakfast look at the sport with breakfast ferry coyte. Good ferry owned paul coyte. Good morning you. Morning to you. Good morning. Morning. Today are in the middle of are you . Im in the middle of the couch to five k. Have you done the couch to k thing . Done the couch to five k thing . Done couch side. Ive done the couch side. Ive done the couch side. Have you done the couch side . Its one its done the its one side. Its done the five k but, but i was looking the middle of about the im in the middle of about five in now which is you five weeks in now which is you know its getting, its getting tough and i was looking the tough and i was looking at the world was world record for the five k was broken for theres different age groups so for group i groups so for my age group i think about three hours for think was about three hours for it. Young nine it. But the young guy, nine years louis robinette , his years old, louis robinette, his name is 17 minutes. And 40s for five, k for five k. And theres also a seven year old record as well, and which was broken 21 minutes for five k. Its unbelievable. What do you do in unbelievable. What do you do in a lot longer . Actually, i say a lot longer . Actually, i say that. I say i havent actually reached that distance yet. Yeah. I mean i did the London Marathon when i was 17, lied about my age and the oldest woman in the race beat me by 45 minutes. Oh well, there you shes probably there you go. Shes probably died long time ago. Died a long, long time ago. Think so. Yeah, i should think so. Yeah, i should think so. Scotland, tonight. Very scotland, spain tonight. Very big will run more than five big game will run more than five k during match arent they. Big game will run more than five k doh|g match arent they. Big game will run more than five k doh i match arent they. Big game will run more than five k doh i should atch arent they. Big game will run more than five k doh i should say. Arent they. Oh i should say. Oh i should say. Yeah. I mean scotland have been brilliant. Theres no answer to that. They played been brilliant. Theres no answer tlostit. They played been brilliant. Theres no answer tlost to they played been brilliant. Theres no answer tlost to england. Red been brilliant. Theres no answer tlost to england. But england lost to england. But apart that one played 515. Apart from that one played 515. And qualify for the european and to qualify for the european championships if they i think really just get a point against spain seville theyll spain in seville tonight theyll be. So its been very be through. So its been very good for scotland. John good for scotland. Although john mcginn, plays for scotland, mcginn, who plays for scotland, said only our wee country could mess it up from here. And so we have to stay calm because they dont have good history in the past. But hopefully things will be them tonight. Be fine for them tonight. We rudy yeah, can we talk, rudy yeah, because you know, because the, you know, footballer, manager , footballer, legendary manager, not so much. Doesnt really mean when youre a great footballer, as we know from history, that youre going to a great manager. Going to be a great manager. Often the greatest managers were not extremely successful footballers. Obviously footballers. Theres obviously some Pep Guardiola that some like Pep Guardiola that were though this is a were with wayne though this is a really, really important job for him because he started off with derby county, had trouble with derby county, had trouble with derby because of the way that the club was being run. Money situations. And it was very situations. And it was very difficult because he had to go against points deductions. So it was a very difficult job for him. Went to america and he was there washing dc, dc there for a washing in dc, dc united that was a tricky job as well. But i think its almost like hes trying to learn his trade a little more. But now hes come back birmingham and hes come back to birmingham and american of money american owners plenty of money around and this a huge job around and this is a huge job for him. So really he has to get them offs, at least them to the play offs, at least you think, in the championship. So id like to it on id so id like to it is on id like to learn my trade whilst getting paid several Million Pounds a year. Not bad is i thought its not bad is it. I thought its a bad apprenticeship its not a bad apprenticeship is it. Thats what you were thats exactly what you were doing. Yeah. Doing. Oh yeah. Fair point. Yeah. Yeah. Fair point. Yeah. Yeah. More thing. The one more thing. The australian. Tied australian. Have we got tied with Australian Open very with the Australian Open very quickly. That in golf quickly. I love that in golf they have holes. Its they have party holes. Its where get to enjoy the where people get to enjoy the golf have fun the same golf and have fun at the same time. Drink, dance, be merry. Theyre the theyre doing it at the australian first Australian Open for the first time in january by the sixth by court sixth six is going court number, sixth six is going to be like, its going to be like would call a like they would call a discotheque back your day. Yeah. Djs in a bar, isnt it . Djs in a bar, isnt it . Theyre going to be. Yes. Bars pumping music like rowdy people, a bit like the newsroom out very, out here. Its very, very similar that gets similar to that. But that gets undennay. Think its going undennay. And i think its going to tennis. To revolutionise tennis. It could. I think it could. I think it could. Its not going to be any quiet. Please. Please. The days are very, very interested in that. I think. I think itll be the party court days of the disco tech. Its been while since ive its been a while since ive done that. Done any of that. Not as long as it has for you to fair. Very much, yeah. To be fair. Very much, yeah. Still to come, will this make motorists even more angry . Report that report suggests that ulez cameras fining cameras could wrongly be fining millions tell you millions of us. Well tell you more a minute. It is 841. Good morning to you. This is breakfast with stephen and ellie. And joining us now to go through some of the days headlines, a former liberal democrat minister, norman baker, and columnist at conservative home, emily carver. Good morning to you both. Good morning. Were looking at some different stuff this morning, arent we . A little bit lighter, a bit lighter, which i think we all need, to be perfectly honest, lighter, which i think we all need, to thiserfectly honest, lighter, which i think we all need, to this isiectly honest, lighter, which i think we all need, to this is they honest, lighter, which i think we all need, to this is the timesst, norman. This is the times online. A university is planning to ban dogs. Yeah this is my, my home town of aberdeen, as a matter of fact. And this is a draft policy published by the university which says that dogs were said to have, quote, impeded escape dunng to have, quote, impeded escape during fire drills and caused trips and falls , unquote. And it trips and falls, unquote. And it claimed that pets had the potential. In other words, they havent done so, had the potential to cause bite injuries and caused distress to those with phobias. Contaminate food and spread animal based diseases. And its one of the lecturers there, dr. Nathaniel green, who bnngs there, dr. Nathaniel green, who brings golden retriever, brings his golden retriever, odin, in and is subject to some controversy. And someone else is controversy. And someone else is saying that they feel that the Workplace Environment is not appropriate for a dog. They appropriate for a dog. They wouldnt bring a dog in if they worked at asda or in a school. So why are they allowed in the university . What do you think . What do you think . I think living let live, to be honest with you and we just creating this very safe bubble for students, which isnt actually anything like the real world out there. In the real world, you might come across a dog in the street. Well, you might do. I mean, amazingly, dogs do exist street, dont they . Exist in the street, dont they . I i have to say, you i mean, i have to say, you cannot eliminate risk and hazard from life. No, you cant. You know, is one of know, outside on this is one of my im on rant now outside on paddington around the paddington station, around the corner, set stairs corner, theres a set of stairs up from station and its got corner, theres a set of stairs up then station and its got corner, theres a set of stairs up the stairs. Tation and its got corner, theres a set of stairs up the stairs. Younn and its got corner, theres a set of stairs up the stairs. You please ts got corner, theres a set of stairs up the stairs. You please usejot on the stairs. You please use lifts. No mobiles. One step at a time. Do we need to be controlled in that way . No, its ridiculous, isnt it . Mind you, i have to say, whereas im all for this. If you want to a dog in, id say want to bring a dog in, id say yes. Yes. I have to say, though, ive never seen a dog in a workplace. A matter course workplace. As a matter of course here. But theres been a here. Yeah, but theres been a pug a here. Yeah, but theres been a pug a few times. Pug here a few times. Ive had loads of dogs here. Yes. My dogs been tv, has it . Yeah. Yeah. Its a disgrace. Its a disgrace. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, see, it would be very popular news. This was, what, a year and a half ago . Dogs are very popular in but dogs are very popular in this workplace. Very this in this workplace. Very popular in the newsroom. Think this miserable. I think this is miserable. I think this is miserable. Well. All well. All well. And one student said the and one student has said the dog pets make the campus a happier place. Well they yes, it well, they do, but, yes, it does very much the does very much tie into the students are all snowflakes. Yeah, well , the professors yeah, well, the professors clearly are, too. But, yeah, its the professors complaining. Professors complaining. Emily, whats this in the telegraph about ulez . I hardly telegraph about ulez . I hardly dare say it. Well, i thought id bring this up because we have been following ulez story for following the ulez story for months on channel. And months now on this channel. And yes, the camera commissioner Fraser Sampson has said that the cameras essentially misidentify because theyre not very good in terms of so they have a 3 error rate for reading car number plates, meaning there was significant risks of penalty notices being wrongly issued to innocent motorist. Lets see. Innocent motorist. Lets see. This is so therefore they must scrap the policy. Others escaping, others escaping. Pardon . Others escaping . Pardon . Others escaping . Well, yes, because we misidentify. That means its getting the wrong person. Its not tit for tat, is it . If someone gets gets wrongly fined , you know, it doesnt make fined, you know, it doesnt make up for it that someone else got away with it. No. No. So, yes, but this is one more reason why ulez should not have been expanded, because they cant even get cameras if theyre doing with this, theyre doing that with this, does happen with congestion does that happen with congestion charging as well . Do. It must do. It must do. Possibly. Quite possibly. Quite possibly. Possibly. But these are quite possibly. But these are i also issue i mean, theres also the issue of of these cameras are of how many of these cameras are actually functioning well, because you know, with speed cameras, they often if youre if youre lucky, theyre not working. Yeah. So i guess this working. Yeah. So i guess this Monitoring System isnt as efficient. This is a new job ive never heard might think a camera commissioner job ive never heard of. Honestly, im not sure about that. I mean, its crackers, actually. Were being watched. Yeah. Should we go back to the animal theme animals, shall we . Because take a look this. We . Because take a look at this. The korean zoo has the south korean zoo has unveiled names of baby giant unveiled the names of baby giant panda ahead of panda twins today. Ahead of their 100th day birthday this saturday. Look at them. They are so cute. Oh i love pandas. Yeah. They havent been given career names, though, but chinese ones. The first one is rainbow , which means wise rainbow, which means wise treasure. The second one is hui treasure. The second one is hui bao, meaning shining treasure from which we can conclude that bao is chinese for treasure. Youve got fantastic chinese, stephen. Very good, stephen. Very good, stephen. I was thinking that. I was thinking that. Very good. Nihal very good. Nihal they are chinese, which is why theyve been given chinese names. Chinas been sending its black and white ambassadors abroad in a sign of goodwill since the 19 its called since the 19 1950s. Its called panda diplomacy. And youve got to say , norman, it works. To say, norman, it works. It does work. It does work. It does work. It does work. I mean, i remember pandas being in there in in edinburgh zoo, being in there in in edinburgh 200, being quite famous up there, id say pandas look lovely, dont they . But they are not bright animals these into. But thats okay, norman. But thats okay, norman. Okay. Thats okay. Thats okay. All but its probably all right. But i mean, live bamboo. Theyve i mean, live on bamboo. Theyve only. Only eat bamboo, i mean, live on bamboo. Theyve only. They. Only eat bamboo, i mean, live on bamboo. Theyve only. They. Theyzat bamboo, i mean, live on bamboo. Theyve only. They. They need mboo, i mean, live on bamboo. Theyve only. They. They need mbo of dont they. They need lots of help diet. Help to diet. Well, they need help with the mating dont they. And thats very be more very good that id be more worried about that than i dont think theyre very bright. Know what to do though. Theyre very. Yes they yes. Theyre very. Yes they yes. So they have to be sort of to encourage. Yeah. Theyre not very good. Theyre not very keen. Me. Yes. Look. Goodness me. Yes. Look. So theyd extinct if it were up theyd be extinct if it were up to them. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Theyd struggle. Theyd struggle. Theyd struggle. They do need of human they do need a lot of human help, theyre very, very help, but theyre very, very maybe reason they maybe theres a reason they dont want to procreate. Tell you what. Ill tell you what. Ill tell you what. Interesting. We need to its interesting. We need to speak to robin, our producer, whos chinese, because normally they they would they have to. They would be called bao re re or called bao bao or re re or whatever have to repeat the whatever they have to repeat the names. Treasure. Treasure because of because thats what they sort of do children, isnt it . Do with children, isnt it . Wangwang in iceland, wangwang well, also in iceland, of course , Magnus Magnusson of course, Magnus Magnusson is the same thing. The icelandic names. And the icelandic names. And the icelandic names. Oh, i shouldnt laugh. Oh no, no, no. I was just thinking , when i was just thinking, when i was at the at the olympics in 2008, the mascots were called baby jingjing, wang wang , mimi baby jingjing, wang wang, mimi and. And because if you split it up, its beijing wang ying ni, which means beijing welcomes you. Oh, so they do use pandas for diplomacy. Dont they . Boring. You know , they just boring. You know, they just know it works. Know it works. Very cute. Very cute. So you can see through this use of little cute creatures for diplomatic reasons. Thats enough. Thats enough. Thats enough. Surely not. Were not that easily manipulated , are we . Easily manipulated, are we . All right, well, ill tell you what. They can send some our way. They can send some our way. Ill tell you what. Ill tell you what. Id manipulate you, emily carver. What would my money. What would my money. Money. Money. You saying . What are you saying . What are you saying . Stephen well look at stephen cash. Well look at this one. A lottery player in california won. Wait for it california has won. Wait for it. 1. 7 billion in the Powerball Jackpot ,. 1. 7 billion in the Powerball Jackpot, winning number of the second largest Powerball Jackpot in the us was announced late last night. And yeah, 1. 7, 6 billion went to one Ticket Holder , one person getting what holder, one person getting what would you do with 1. 76 . I know what id do. Oh, i wouldnt. I wouldnt. Been here this morning. I doubt you probably not bought a superyacht. Superyacht. Emily would have bought a superyacht id buy houses for all my for all my friends and family. Family. Angie , would you be very. Angie, would you be very. Yeah philanthropic. Philanthropic. Norman, i think i would. I would know what to do with it, to be honest with you, its a huge amount of money. Once you get past a certain amount, you dont need anything else, do you . Really . Yeah. Really . Yeah. I think they pay. You know, someone never been rich someone whos never been rich would say, buy steam train would say, buy a steam train once youve got the one point. Oh, well, there you go. Train, run on the buy a steam train, run on the main line. Yeah, thats what i do. I think youve to pay tax i think youve got to pay tax on in america your on it in america on your winnings. Oh, really . Think so . Oh, so half of that will go so. So. So a lot of it would go in tax, but it would be i mean, its about 1. 3, £1. 4 million. That brilliant billion. That brilliant billion. Billion. Billion. Lot. Its a lot. I mean, a lot. Its a lot. I mean, dont to put a damper on dont want to put a damper on it, but actually you find that people in not very much people who are in not very much now suddenly now and then suddenly have a huge amount they dont huge amount of money, they dont know to handle it and not know how to handle it and not getting proper advice on what to do with it. Having friends do with it. Having said friends and apparently youre and family, apparently youre not tell anyone. Not supposed to tell anyone. People want no, because people only want you money and you end you for your money and you end up apparently crazy up apparently theres some crazy statistic. Know what it statistic. I dont know what it is, high proportion of is, but a high proportion of lottery winners losing lottery winners end up losing all their money. Yeah, because they dont know how manage they dont know how to manage it. Right. I think it thats right. I think it would quite challenging. Would be quite challenging. And they think more than and they think its more than it is. Em it is. Was called it . What was she called it . What was she called it . Pools back in the won the pools back in the day. I dont know. They made a musical about and all the rest of it. It was just very famous. And thing that and the pools were a thing that must 40 ago must be 30, 40 years ago now. She about grand, which she won about 30 grand, which was of money back then, was a lot of money back then, and she, she and she lost it all that stall, that worked on a market stall, is that yeah. Yeah. Is that right . Yeah. Yeah. Same thing with pop well, same thing with pop stars. You go back to 1960s, you had like adam in had pop stars like adam faith in people lot of money people who earned a lot of money to with, and then they to start with, and then they blew then they wonder blew it all and then they wonder why back they why they were back where they started market stall started from on the market stall or yeah, yeah, yeah. Its yeah, yeah, yeah. No, its youve got to get out this. I wouldnt tell anybody. Perhaps it perhaps youve won it already, perhaps youve won it alre itiy, perhaps youve won it alre it could be it could be me. It could be me. It could be me. I dont think keep it i dont think i could keep it to myself. Wouldnt it be obvious, though, if you had 1. 76 billion . Thats. Youd know. Well, thats. Youd know. Well, thats. Youd know. It you id know about it if you started a billionaire. Started being a billionaire. Put under bed. More diamonds and have a lot more diamonds and a diamonds. A lot more diamonds. Id very decked out. Id be very decked out. Id be very decked out. Well, cant yeah . Yeah, well, cant be. Cant maybe this is cant be knocked. Maybe this is all though, norman. Yeah, i want to. Yeah, i want to. I want look at this story yeah, i want to. The ant look at this story yeah, i want to. The daily look at this story yeah, i want to. The daily star, at this story yeah, i want to. The daily star, whichs story yeah, i want to. The daily star, which is. Tory yeah, i want to. The daily star, which is a ry in the daily star, which is a front page page which says a totally physicist would front page page which says a totalthe physicist would front page page which says a totalthe phwordt would front page page which says a totalthe phwordt wthat. Take the stars word for that. Figures be all characters figures we may be all characters in Virtual World created by an in a Virtual World created by an advanced computer. Thats his theory. And he says, my studies theory. And he says, my studies point to an interesting possibility that we dont live in objective reality and that in an objective reality and that the entire universe might just be a super advanced Virtual Reality simulation such behaviour is fully consistent with the rules of deployed and programming languages and computer coding is a professor, so vopson. So vopson. So vopson. So its basically the matrix . So its basically the matrix . Yes, the question would be though, if this is all if none of this is real, then this would all be from my perspective, im inventing all of you lot or living none of you lot could exist. Or are we all benching each other . Yeah yeah. Are we actually here . Oh, well, its all just a simulation. Yeah so what were saying. Well, the professor is saying i dont know, but i used to like playing the sims. Oh. And that was a good game. Did you not play it . I used to love the sims. The sims. Love the sims. The sims. Create your own universe. Create your own universe. That was an Expansion Pack called the sims hot date. Oh, yes. And what would you do on yes. And what would you do on other ones . Thats just the one other ones . Thats just the one i remember. Thats the one you remember . Thats the one you remember . Yeah. On the sims. Yeah. On the sims. What that says about me. No, i dont know. Think we should was i think we should find it was all friendly. Think all children friendly. I think i should. Professor should find out. Professor Melvin Vopson exists. All these imagination by the daily star. Yeah, well, you do. You do wonder. Wonder. I think hes a nutty professor myself. I dont know whether the labour defending its election plan on the front of the i emilys is that reality or virtual . What do we think. What do we think. Well it is Jonathan Ashworth who is the shadow paymaster general. Hes is leading labours attack operation and its all about drilling into the detail, making sure their policies are bomb proof, sharpening up their messaging and policy offering, essentially making sure that they dont put a foot wrong before the general election so that they can sweep into power. We were talking in into power. We were talking in the in the break, norman and i and who knows, we may see a Hung Parliament. It may not. They have a lot of seats to win. They have a lot of seats to win. They have a lot of seats to win. They have a lot of seats to win. But at the moment it theyre looking like they probably , you know, like they probably, you know, will take. What you think, norman . What do you think, norman . What do you think, norman . Government in terms take the government in terms of the fact all does need of the fact this all does need to be pretty watertight if anyones going to take him seriously, be seriously, its got to be watertight. Watertight. Be fiscally its got to be fiscally solid. Do think theyre in a solid. Do you think theyre in a position do that . Solid. Do you think theyre in a poswell, do that . Solid. Do you think theyre in a poswell, do tto . Solid. Do you think theyre in a poswell, do tto be fiscally well, it has to be fiscally solid. And look, the conservatives who are on the back at moment are be back foot at the moment are be looking mistake that looking for any mistake that starmer makes. And makes starmer makes. And if he makes a mistake , then theyll exploit starmer makes. And if he makes a misttoz , then theyll exploit starmer makes. And if he makes a mistto the 1en theyll exploit starmer makes. And if he makes a mistto the nth theyll exploit starmer makes. And if he makes a mistto the nth degreeexploit starmer makes. And if he makes a mistto the nth degree. ploit starmer makes. And if he makes a mistto the nth degree. Soyit starmer makes. And if he makes a mistto the nth degree. So hes that to the nth degree. So hes got to be very careful about that. Right. Theres a that. Emilys right. Theres a huge mountain to climb. 123 seats, i think it is to get a majority. And if you look at the by Election Results across last 12 months, 24 months, the lib. 12 months, 24 months, the lib. Lib dem gains actually have been much bigger swings than the labour gains. So i think a Hung Parliament is actually very likely. And interestingly, the likely. And interestingly, the lib dem conference i was at both labour lib dem conferences, labour and lib dem conferences, lib dem conferences, lot of lib dem conferences, a lot of people there who people turning up there who hadnt up before hadnt been turning up before the rutherglen by election. Emily rutherglen by sorry, emily rutherglen by election swing. Election last week, huge swing. Absolutely. And think in absolutely. And i think in scotland, yes, significant. Its significant. I its very significant. And i think scotland will see big think scotland will see a big swing i think swing to labour and i think actually around the edges, around celtic fringes, around the celtic fringes, therell be some dem gains therell be some lib dem gains might tory gains. Might be 1 or 2 tory gains. I think the skids. Think the snp are on the skids. Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Well shadow cabinet well one shadow cabinet minister has know minister here has said we know how good the tory attack machine is. We just need to make sure is. We just need to make sure were ready for them and that our proof. Our policies are bomb proof. Well there you go. We shall watch and well, we shall watch and wait. Emily, its been wait. Norman. Emily, its been good you both this good to see you both this morning. Thank you very much indeed. Check on indeed. Lets get the check on your alex. Your weather with alex. Good morning hello. Very good morning to you. To your latest gb you. Welcome to your latest gb news weather update to you. Welcome to your latest gb nevi by veather update to you. Welcome to your latest gb nevi by the her update to you. Welcome to your latest gb nevi by the met|pdate to you. Welcome to your latest gb nevi by the met office. To you. Welcome to your latest gb nevi by the met office. Im to you. Welcome to your latest gb nevi by the met office. Im alexy you by the met office. Im alex burkill is burkill and whilst today is looking dry with the looking largely dry with the best sunshine in best of the sunshine in the north, do have some wet north, we do have some wet weather arriving later more weather arriving later on. More on second. At the on that in a second. At the moment got a cloudy moment weve got a cloudy picture across many southern areas of areas with some outbreaks of rain most clearing rain, but most of that clearing away further north after a touch of frost. First thing, it is going largely bright. Going to be largely bright. Plenty across plenty of sunshine across Northern Ireland northern Northern Ireland and Northern England some england in particular, and some sunny spells across scotland too, also the risk of a few too, but also the risk of a few showers, particularly towards the and the far north orkney and shetland. Shetland especially. Temperatures will down temperatures will be down a little compared to little bit compared to yesterday, the yesterday, especially in the south, quite a bit of cloud south, with quite a bit of cloud around getting high around getting into the high teens we go teens celsius. Then as we go through this evening and overnight, going overnight, we are going to be attacked two sides. We have attacked from two sides. We have attacked from two sides. We have a low pressure towards attacked from two sides. We have a lo north ssure towards attacked from two sides. We have a lo north ssurethat towards attacked from two sides. We have a lo north ssurethat willtowards attacked from two sides. We have a lo north ssurethat will bringis attacked from two sides. We have a lo north ssurethat will bring a the north and that will bring a spell of showery rain across parts but in parts of scotland. But its in the we a swathe of the south. We have a swathe of very wet weather will very wet weather that will spread of england spread across much of england and bringing heavy and wales, bringing some heavy rain the rain as we head through the early friday morning rain as we head through the early thezriday morning rain as we head through the early the cloud morning rain as we head through the early the cloud andling rain as we head through the early the cloud and the because of the cloud and the rain, temperatures arent going to much as they did last to drop as much as they did last night. So especially the night. So especially in the north, not to be as north, its not going to be as chilly we go friday chilly as we go through friday itself. Picture itself. Then a very wet picture across of and wales across much of england and wales. Be flooding. There could be some flooding and disruption to travel. And some disruption to travel. So watch out for heavy so do watch out for some heavy rain and some intense rain and even some intense downpours across most southern counties, north counties, too. Further north across scotland and Northern Ireland, its a showery picture, blustery at times. And thats going take edge off those going to take the edge off those temperatures. And theyre likely to for time to be near normal for the time of turning colder into of year. But turning colder into this weekend. This weekend. Well, do you stay with us. Well have more on the israel Hamas Conflict and well have our reporter, Charlie Peters. Hes on the ground in tel aviv for us. So well have that for you after this. In gaza, its coming up to 11 00 and in the last few minutes, the International Committee of the red cross has said hospitals in gaza risk turning into morgues as they lose power. Lose power. Israel continues with its Bombing Campaign and blockade on gaza, vowing to wipe out the hamas terror group. Well , it is hamas terror group. Well, it is 9 00 hamas terror group. Well , it is 9 00 here hamas terror group. Well, it is 9 00 here in the uk. Its thursday , the 12th of uk. Its thursday, the 12th of october. And these are the developments weve been covering so far this morning. So far this morning. Israel has cut off water, food and power to the gaza strip and continues its bombardment. The United Nations secretary general warns of a humanitarian crisis. This and humanitarian crisis. This and has appealed to israel to allow aid into gaza. Aid into gaza. Well, the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu , minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has formed a war cabinet as senior us and uk officials , senior us and uk officials, eagles fly into israel to offer support. Our reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv as the humanitarian situation in gaza declines, israeli troops gather on the border for a potential Ground Invasion. Ground invasion. In other news, labour leader sir keir starmer tells gb news he will cut taxes for people on low incomes if he becomes Prime Minister. Id like the overall board burden, particularly on working people, to come down, but obviously we will operate of course, and always within our fiscal rules and alex will have you weather. Good morning. Whilst its good morning. Whilst its going to turn mostly dry for many of us today, we do have some heavy rain arriving overnight. Ill have more later i morning to you. Im stephen dixon. Dixon. And im Ellie Costello. And this is breakfast on gb news. So as you will understand , so as you will understand, our main news today is the humanitarian crisis escalating in gaza as israels large scale Bombing Campaign continues to flatten entire areas. Their stated mission is to wipe out hamas, which is continue aiming to fire rockets into israel. To fire rockets into israel. All diesel generators are now all that stand between the palestine people and a total blackout out as israels blockade of the gaza strip prevents any aid getting in. Well the un secretary general has said essential supplies of food, fuel and water must be allowed to reach civilians. Allowed to reach civilians. In gaza palace opinion Health Officials say 1200 people have died in israeli airstrikes in gaza. The toll from the hamas attack on israeli communities at the weekend is also over 1200. Thats according to government officials. Well , the un says the number well, the un says the number of people displaced based in gaza now stands at around 400,000. But gaza isnt the only front in this conflict. Another in this conflict. Another militant group, hezbollah , lies militant group, hezbollah, lies just across israels northern border in neighbouring lebanon. Border in neighbouring lebanon. Well, this air raid siren sounded off in metulla in northern israel as reports of projectile fire came in. But look at the reality of the situation. No if any, if situation. No if any, if anything , epitomises the anything, epitomises the situation in gaza at the moment, it is that woman, a woman collapsing in grief as those israeli strikes continue to pound the gaza strip. And here pound the gaza strip. And here we see people searching for bodies. So were told in gaza. Bodies. So were told in gaza. This is in khan younis and just showing the amount of destruction, of course , as this destruction, of course, as this is one side of the situation isnt it, because its a case of, as israel would say, their right to defend themselves after those precedented attacks at the weekend, which has which have killed 1200 israelis and has led to kidnapping rings, people being held hostage in gaza. But this drone footage is just showing some of the destruction wrought on gaza by the israelis in response to that dreadful attack on their country. And we can see here that buildings have been flattened, people working there to try and work their way through the rubble to see if there are any survivors underneath. But there survivors underneath. But there are questions, of course, in gaza for People Living there. 2 million of them where do we go for safety . And quite frankly, for safety . And quite frankly, there is nowhere safe at the moment if they are living in gaza, 2 Million People living there. Half of those people are children in. And of course, the question is hamas around all of this . Because they are a terrorist organisation , they have organisation, they have committed absolute atrocity days in israel , but they are committed absolute atrocity days in israel, but they are in committed absolute atrocity days in israel , but they are in gaza. In israel, but they are in gaza. Thats where theyre in hiding and often using civilians as a shield. So where does that leave shield. So where does that leave the fact that civilians are suffering in gaza and should aid food and fuel and water be allowed through to them , which allowed through to them, which israel is not allowing at the moment . Well , earlier we spoke to the well, earlier we spoke to the Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, and we asked him if the uk government agreed with the appeal from the un allow aid appeal from the un to allow aid into gaza and stop israels blockade. Well, the us secretary of state is now in israel to demonstrate americas support for the country. Anthony blinken is also going to meet the palestinian president , Mahmoud Abbas, who is not connected to hamas. Hes abbas, who is not connected to hamas. Hes from the Palestinian Authority , and he leads the authority, and he leads the Fatah Movement, the party that controls the west bank, whereas it is hamas controlling gaza. It is hamas controlling gaza. Im going with a very simple and clear message on behalf of the president of the United States and on behalf of the american people, and that is that states has that the United States has israels back. Have the back israels back. We have the back of people. Have of the israeli people. We have their today. Well have it their back today. Well have it tomorrow. We will have it every day. Day. Well, in total, 1200 israelis have lost their lives since hamas launched its attacks on the country, with many remaining missing, feared kidnapped or dead. Well, israel is understandably angry , beyond understandably angry, beyond comprehension and is now seeing the largest sign up of reservists to its military in years. Our reporter Charlie Peters is in tel aviv for us. And look , Prime Minister and look, Prime Minister netanyahu is clearly not going to hold the punches here. Hes determined to really push hard against this, isnt he . Thats right. And israelis both civilian and soldiers that ive been speaking to since arriving here, say that israel doesnt just have a right to defend itself. It has to defend itself. Its endunng it has to defend itself. Its enduring the worst violence that the country has seen in the last 50 years. And as you say, the death toll well over 1000 now, the majority of those are civilians. The idf say that 220 of its soldiers have been killed since saturday morning when Hamas Terrorists launched that invasion into the country. And of those 220, they are actually including people who self mobilised reservists who were not on active duty, but who picked up a rifle when they saw terrorists streaming over the border into their villages. Now, border into their villages. Now, as it moves to defend itself , as it moves to defend itself, this is a very complex battle space. There are threats from the north, from the Lebanese Hezbollah. Theres also been shelling from syria. And of shelling from syria. And of course, the barrage of rockets coming in from the gaza strip on saturday, hamas fired some 4500 rockets into the territories around gaza , but also further around gaza, but also further north to ashkelon and here in tel aviv, where rockets hit the airport to the east of the city. Now now the rocket fire has reduced its rate. The home command here say that hamas is now firing up to 400 rockets a day as it prepares for a long term war. As they see it, hamas is going to ground , of course, is going to ground, of course, when they work in gaza. They when they work in gaza. They have those underground tunnels. Theyre bunkers and deep fortifications within the most densely populated part of the to world keep them safe. Now the us secretary of state is in israel to meet with various political leaders and that diplomatic effort is about extending americas humanitarian hand to the gazans and try and open up a relief passage into egypt. But also it is about sharpening israels spear, bringing new munitions to prepare for that likely Ground Invasion into the gaza strip as israel prepares for that invasion , the country for that invasion, the country is becoming more united, and a unity government, in fact, is now in place. Heres what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had to say last night. To say last night. The citizens of israel. All the citizens of israel. All this evening, we have established a National Emergency government. The people of israel government. The people of israel are united. And today its government is united. And im government is united. And im saying here to everyone, we will wipe this thing called hamas, isis , gaza, off the face of the isis, gaza, off the face of the earth. Earth. It will cease to exist. It will cease to exist. It will cease to exist. Its clear that the israelis are shaping an invasion of the gaza strip. But the question now gaza strip. But the question now is, can they sustain it . Fighting on several fronts. Fighting on several fronts. Okay. Charlie peters there for us in tel aviv. Thank you so much for bringing us up to date on the situation on the ground there. Lets have a look there. But lets have a look back to where it all started now with of israel with hamass invasion of israel on saturday. We can speak to one of the survivors of the massacre. Of the survivors of the massacre , eden bart, whos jerusalem , eden bart, whos in jerusalem this morning. Very to good see you this morning, eden, and very pleased to see that you are safe. Tell us about the situation on saturday morning because you started to hear bombs going off very, very early in the morning, didnt you . In the morning, didnt you . Yeah, around 630, we started heanng yeah, around 630, we started hearing the barrage within seconds. The whole family was downstairs in the basement. Unfortunately, we know the drill because hamas bombs us every now and then. And they especially like doing it on holidays. So we werent surprised. And when we werent surprised. And when we had to be there for a while and then a little while aftennards, we started hearing the reports that made us understand that this is not the usual drill because we understood that there are terrorists in the streets , are terrorists in the streets, that some of the villages have been infiltrated, infiltrated. Been infiltrated, infiltrated. And you know , we were all we and you know, we were all we were in the basement because its supposed to be rocket proof, but it doesnt have a doon proof, but it doesnt have a door. So if there are terrorists on my street, then theres Nothing Holding them back. They you know, they break a window and theyre basically in my basement. Within seconds. So we basement. Within seconds. So we grabbed some kitchen knives and my mom had this little gardening hatchet. And that was our last hatchet. And that was our last line of protection against fanatic gunmen. And the reports fanatic gunmen. And the reports kept on pouring in that a few to hundreds of metres from us, there are fierce battles being fought out that include beheadings of people, including babies , rape, burning down babies, rape, burning down entire families in their homes. Entire families in their homes. And we could hear the gunshots and lots of them. We could hear them for hours and hours. And we them for hours and hours. And we were there really without any protection, knowing that these crazy, crazy zealots are very , crazy, crazy zealots are very, very close to our door. Very close to our door. Lets be frank. Eden. For lets be frank. Eden. For most of us, its utterly beyond comprehension what went on. And indeed why it went. On what do indeed why it went. On what do you want to see as an israeli . What do you want to see happen next in all of this . Do you think netanyahu is right with his stance that he wants wipe his stance that he wants to wipe hamas the face of the planet hamas off the face of the planet i hamas should have been wiped off the face of the planet a long time ago. They are a terrorist organisation who do not represent the palestine people. They are much closer to the taliban or isis than any, you know, Freedom Fighters. And i feel for the people of gaza who are innocent civilians and have nothing and are oppressed by hamas themselves. So i feel by hamas themselves. So i feel very badly for them. But unfortunately , i think the only unfortunately, i think the only way this oppression stops is if hamas is wiped off the face of the earth. This will be hard because they have a lot of funding their leaders are obviously not in the gaza strip. They are living in Luxury Hotels around the world. So just you know, just a war on the strip is not going to be the end of it, unfortunately. But i think that the world can work to stop the funding , to sanction the people funding, to sanction the people who are in charge of the atrocities going on. Since saturday. And to this moment. I dont know. Im no military expert. I dont know how how to fix this. But i know that we will have to root this out at from the core and its going to be harsh and its going to be long. Aiden this must have been so shocking for you, the events of saturday and you have a lot of family that live in kibbutz. You are now safely in jerusalem. How are now safely in jerusalem. How are your family . I understand that you still have a close relative who is still missing. Relative who is still missing. Yeah. Um i have one relative who died in battle and another relative who is missing. We relative who is missing. We dont know where he is. He was in one of the kibbutzim who were infiltrated , and we kind of infiltrated, and we kind of dread finding out. Unfortunately, right now , israel unfortunately, right now, israel has a lot of dead bodies that it cant even recognise because of what hamas did to them. Im not what hamas did to them. Im not even im not even going to specify because i think those things are so awful. And i cant even say those words. So we even say those words. So we dont even know what to hope for. We dont know what the best Case Scenario is because theyre all dreadful. All dreadful. Yeah. Which is the harsh reality of it all. And just a final thought , eden. You you final thought, eden. You you said you have sympathy for the for ordinary palestinians in the gaza strip, in effect being held hostage by hamas. What should hostage by hamas. What should happenin hostage by hamas. What should happen in terms of the blockade is that the right thing to do or. Not i dont know. I i, i honestly dont know. I do want to remind that the gaza strip has a border with egypt as well. So blocked doesnt depend only on israel. If egypt decides that they want to allow humanitarian aid to flow through their border , they flow through their border, they can do that. Um i hope that can do that. Um i hope that humanitarian aid, which means only water, food and medicine , only water, food and medicine, does reach the people there. But does reach the people there. But unfortunately, weve seen a lot of humanitarian aid in the form of humanitarian aid in the form of money flowing into gaza and being used to fund these activities because most of the money that goes into gaza is funnelled into building more for, um, you know, attack tunnels or buying more weapons and into educating kids in gaza that their mission in life is to kill jews. Kill jews. Eden whats your hopes for israel now. Israel now. Well, weve been divided nafion well, weve been divided nation for a while now , and i nation for a while now, and i really hope that this will unite us. Were already seeing that it has united us in ways that we havent seen in a long time. Um countless families have opened their homes to the refugees from my area, and that includes a lot of arab families as well. Ah, also a part of this new unity that were seeing. Everyone is that were seeing. Everyone is volunteering , everyone is volunteering, everyone is packing food, buying supplies , packing food, buying supplies, offering free aid. You know, offering free aid. You know, musicians are performing for free and people are giving lectures and screening films and everything so that people are able to take their minds off of whats going on for a little while now. Um, restaurants are just cooking tonnes of food and sending it over here and, and weve really been seeing an amazing , weve really been seeing an amazing, amazing weve really been seeing an amazing , amazing surge of unity amazing, amazing surge of unity and love inside our communities. And i hope that were going to see that for a long time. Yeah eden, really good to see you this morning. We really appreciate it, actually, because its you provide a balance that i think some people perhaps wouldnt have expected from someone whos been through what youve been through so really through. And so we really appreciate that. Thanks very much indeed. Much indeed. We do. We do. And were very glad that youre safe as well. And how incredible been incredible that eden has been through. And she can still through that. And she can still say she she thinks about say that she she thinks about the people gaza and worries the people in gaza and worries for thank you for that, for them. Thank you for that, eden. Look, news from just news justin look, news from just news just in just reaching us. And its schultz, whos its from olaf schultz, whos the chancellor telling the german chancellor telling the german chancellor telling the that that the parliament there that that the parliament there that that the president abbas now, thats Mahmoud Abbas , who is the head Mahmoud Abbas, who is the head of the Fatah Movement , which of the Fatah Movement, which used to control gaza strip and the west bank, now just runs the west bank. And hes said that president abbas is silence. This president abbas is silence. This after the hamas attacks on israel is shameful. Hes also israel is shameful. Hes also said that aid to palestinians is going to be halted pending a review. Now, that is interesting. Mahmoud abbas is going to be meeting Anthony Blinken, the us secretary of state, later on today. Some of our experts this morning saying hes a man without power. Now and because he has no control over the gaza strip, can can affect no control over hamas. Affect no control over hamas. But he is the leader of fatah, which was the once powerful movement that controlled israel. Anneliese but his silence over the hamas attacks on israel is shameful , according to olaf shameful, according to olaf schultz. And well see if we get any any comment from Mahmoud Abbas as he meets Anthony Blinken today. But thats thats justin blinken today. But thats thats just in so theyre stopping aid to palestinians as a result. Well, do you stay with us. Still to come, that famous sycamore gap tree that was chopped down two weeks ago will be moved to a secret location. Well have more on that after now at 923, lets have a look at the sycamore gap. Tree, its gone. The sycamore gap. Tree, its gone. But what happens next . Gone. But what happens next . Well, our reporter tony mcguire is there for us this morning. Good morning to you, tony. This is a tree that united the country, didnt it . There was collective outcry after it was collective outcry after it was felled and now its set to be moved. Tell us more. You be moved. Tell us more. You yes, thats correct. Certainly this was is arguably the most photographed tree in the most photographed tree in the whole of britain. And with the whole of britain. And with thousands of people walking up the hills here to go and take pictures of it year in and year out. And certainly even it went so far as to win tree of the year back in the last decade. Year back in the last decade. But indeed last month in a horrific act of vandalism , it horrific act of vandalism, it was felled and since then, the north of england has been kind of asking the question of what to do with it. Well, that conversation really finishes up today where i dont know if you can see behind me in the distance, a little blue dot. Well, thats the crane. Thats just about to make it up the military road beside me and where its going to remove the bulk of the felled tree and it will be safely stored in a National Trust property until till they can work out what to do with it. Now, theres still its not all bad news. Theres still some hope in the air. The stump will be left in situ and certainly hoping that it will spnng certainly hoping that it will spring some new shoots. Sycamore is quite a hardy breed and this particular tree stood in this landscape up in a quite a dramatic dip in the hillside here for more than 150 years. So the locals here who have come to recognise the sycamore gap tree will be quite sad to see this part of the landscape changed, most certainly for the rest of their lifetimes. Now part of the rush to get the bulk of the felled tree removed away is because its resting somewhat precariously on Hadrians Wall just at the top of the hill in front of me. And certainly the crane there, along with the crew. Thats been around it has been doing preparation for quite some time. But when its ready, well see the work begin later in the morning. Yeah, tony mcguire there for us in northumberland. It will be a very sad sight to see it go. Thank you so much for being there for us this morning. Its what they do with it, though. Quite interesting. Look, its quite interesting. Look, breakfast is back tomorrow morning , 6 00. Thanks for your morning, 6 00. Thanks for your company today , bev. See you next away. Very good morning. Away. Very good morning. Its 9 30 am. This is britains newsroom on gb news with me bev turner. And im going to be joined in the studio today by the leader of reform uk richard tice throughout the show now leading the news this morning, of course , crushing the morning, of course, crushing the enemy. The israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to wipe hamas off the face of the earth as he puts gaza under total siege, stopping food and fuel reaching the enclave of 2. 3 Million People. Health secretary Steve Barclay refused to commit aid or a civilian corridor to gaza. Civilian corridor to gaza. That israel is able to defend itself from the most appalling attacks that it is faced. But alongside that, the uk has a proud record in terms of its overseas aid. We are major overseas aid. We are major donors. 10 of the aid through the United Nations and the foreign secretary is in israel discussing these issues as we stand with them in the face of the catastrophic events that theyve faced. Theyve faced. Home labour tax cuts, sir keir starmer told gb news that he wants to cut taxes for working people if the party wins the next general election. Id like the overall board burden, particularly on working people, to come down, but obviously we will operate it of course, and always within our fiscal rules and farage main to continues and
