Today. Therell be some rain in some areas. Sunshine elsewhere, but all the details but ill have all the details later on. And aidens got the sport us this morning. Sport for us this morning. Good morning. Edging good morning. Europe edging closer in the ryder closer to victory in the ryder cup despite a late us rally yesterday in the premier league. Defeats both manchester defeats for both manchester clubs var controversy. He clubs and a var controversy. He denies a point at denies liverpool a point at tottenham. Good morning to you. Tottenham. Good morning to you. Im stephen dixon. Im stephen dixon. And im anne diamond and youre watching breakfast on gb news. News. I have to say, just before we came on air, i did say to you its not actually october, is it . It is. It . It is. I cant believe it already. The first day of october, nothing to look fonnard to now except christmas. No. And when did you get your Christmas Tree . I was last weekend. In november. Was going to say, its oh, i was going to say, its a bit early. Yeah, its a bit early yet. Yeah, its a bit early yet. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Last weekend in november. So its month and its like another month and were buying Christmas Trees now. I mean, i cant believe yes. I mean, i cant believe the pace of time at the moment. It didnt really it seems like we didnt really have proper summer. No, but have a proper summer. No, but already obviously were kissing that goodbye and yeah, christmas to fonnard now. Scary, to look fonnard to now. Scary, isnt i dont like it. Isnt it . I dont like it. You always know its autumn when its Party Conference season. Course , and its season. Of course, and its going to be an interesting one for the tories. Oh, i think so, yeah. Day one of Party Conference and the Prime Minister, rishi sunak, has already vowed to set out his vision for the country without taking the easy choices as he arrived for the four day event in manchester. Hell hes announced that he will invest more than £1 billion of cash into towns, into high streets the government say have been overlooked act but the conference isnt going to be plain sailing. Of course theres going to be pressure over issues like High Speed Two hs2 and of course tax cuts or at least because maybe not tax cuts because theyve just its so unlikely. But at least the idea of no tax rises. Least the idea of no tax rises. And i think there are going to be fireworks as well in all sorts of ways. But its interesting, the front page lead of todays sunday times badenoch knock pressure on sunak to knock piles pressure on sunak to quit the echr. The european quit the echr. The European Court of human rights. Quit the echr. The European Court of human rights. Its very court of human rights. Its very interesting that came badenoch has decided to be so outspoken. First day of the conference, if you like. A lot of people are saying, is she positioning herself for some sort of leadership bid . Leadership bid . Okay, lets get the lowdown then from our Political Correspondent, Catherine Forster , whos in manchester. Morning, catherine. Good morning. Pretty dreadful weather here in manchester and rishi sunak is not going to have an easy time at this conference. They came up by train, by sorry, by car yesterday. There were no trains. And this huge ongoing row about hs2 that its widely expected, not ultimately be to run to manchester. Now, the Prime Minister very keen to shift the dial there, still nearly 20 points behind in the polls. And the last couple of weeks hes been a bit bolder, hasnt he, coming out with policies that he thinks will play well with many , such as rolling back some of the softening on some of these green targets and potential scrapping of a levels, etcetera. And we will wait to see what rabbits come out of the hat at conference today. We hear about the money, the levelling up fund for towns we dont hear as much about levelling up as we do did under Boris Johnson or do did we . But very difficult for rishi sunak because all of the rivals are circling. Theres plenty of people within the conservative party that assume that the next general election is already lost and plenty of people who would really rather like to lead the conservative party. So weve heard a lot from home secretary Suella Braverman. Weve heard from Kemi Badenoch this morning, has given an interview and liz truss is going to be making a big speech tomorrow and its rumoured that she also has leadership ambitions is so difficult to manage his own party. Let let alone the wider political picture. Political picture. Okay, catherine, thanks very much indeed. Should we talk now to Scarlett Mccgwire, a former labour adviser, been on the program quite a lot as well. But i think were joining you. I i think were joining you. I dont know where are you in sunny spain or something at the moment at least youre not in manchester where pouring. Manchester where its pouring. In athens. Im manchester where its pouring. In athens. Im in no, im in athens. Im in athens. On the last day of a holiday. Not where i live. No wonder if youll even bother then watching whats going on in manchester. I find it. Dont you find it incredibly surprising that various people seem to be circling and possibly making leadership bids . Well, in. Its because theyve given up, isnt it . Thats the problem. Thats why theyre doing it. So you have people like Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch. Um braverman and Kemi Badenoch. Um within the cabinet and then you have priti patel who thinks that by staying out of the cabinet, shes proved herself. Now, i was going to say as the first thing is that the good news for the tories is it cant be as bad as last year when you had liz truss and everything going down. But now that liz is thinking now that liz truss is thinking that could be the next that she could be the next leader as well , i mean this is leader as well, i mean this is a complete disaster. Complete disaster. Esther its going to be interesting , isnt it, when we interesting, isnt it, when we i know its looking fonnard another week, but comparing and contrasting to labour, obviously theyre a lot. Theyre going to be a lot. Labouris theyre going to be a lot. Labour is going to be a lot more buoyant than the tories in many respects understand. But respects understand. So but theyre not putting lot theyre still not putting a lot on the theyre still not on the table. Theyre still not giving a for voters to say, giving a lot for voters to say, oh yeah, thats a good idea. Well , the what the labour well, the what the labour party are doing is theyre waiting because if you, if you put something good on the table as they found out in the past, the tories steal it. Its just, its just that easy. So. So theyre waiting. And the other theyre waiting. And the other reason theyre waiting is to find out just, just what the economy is going to be like. And so what labour can offer. But so what labour can offer. But the difference between the two conferences, apart from the buoyancy is theres going to be no circling around. Theres no circling around. Theres going to be incredible discipline as we saw in liverpool last year, because what labour are showing is we were fit to govern, we can govern the country and in a way the mood music is much , much the mood music is much, much more important than the individual policies. I mean, you know , we in our bubble think know, we in our bubble think policies are incredibly important. I mean, if you go on the doorstep, most people are not aware about policies. Theyre very aware about mood music is are these people ready to govern . I suppose one of the other most interesting things actually, that will of interest, the labour party is the mood music towards when the next election will be called. Jeremy election will be called. Jeremy hunt has been sort of hinting that it wont be until they get inflation down below 3 or something. And a lot of pundits are saying, well, that makes it probably later next year. What probably later next year. What do you think . Yeah i would assume it would be later. I mean, they unless theres an incredible blip in the polls and they think, lets go now. Lets lets go now when we stand a chance. I mean , what what the a chance. I mean, what what the conservatives are want to do is they want to win the next election, even though probably half the people, if not three quarters of the people in manchester think its already lost. So theyll be waiting for things to get better and its always its always that is you keep hoping that next week will be good news. The problem for rishi sunak is, i mean, hes got the reverse midas touch. You know, everything he does goes wrong. I mean, you had immigration week and the barge, the bibby stockholm had to be emptied of people. You had Education Week and we found rat crumbling concrete in the schools. 140. He had to be had to be closed. So actually, one does wonder for thinking back to theresa may and the speech going wrong with all the letters falling off, whats going to go wrong for rishi this week . Wrong for rishi this week . Yeah, weve got to look on the positive, though. He says hes determined to make , well, hes determined to make, well, hard choices. He says in some respects he is creating some clear water, isnt he, on clear blue water, isnt he, on green issues, there seems to be a bit of a dividing line now, which is proving to be popular. You know, you have to say when you look at the polls, these ideas about , you look at the polls, these ideas about, you know, alter ing the timeline of net zero are the ideas about low traffic neighbourhoods and all these sort of things. Theyre popular with voters. You can tell what with voters. You can tell what people want. People want. Well , lets remember that low well, lets remember that low traffic neighbourhoods is a conservative idea, right . It came in with Boris Johnson. The government encouraged encouraged councils to do it. As far as the green stuff goes, i mean, i think its completely shocking and actually that the climate disaster is not going to wait, you know, while while while we get our while we get our ducks in a row and actually had in 2010, david cameron, instead of saying lets get rid of the green crap done something we would have insulated houses so that people are people would would have much lower heating bills and we would be less reliant on outside stuff. I mean actually the rishis green thing has completely divided the conservative party and the lib dems who are due to take a lot of seats in the south if it goes wrong for the conservatives are are feeling very buoyant about it. So he might say hes brave but im not quite sure who hes always playing to that its and you know electric cars the quicker we get them in the quicker we get them in the quicker that we can have a second hand car market in electric cars so that most people who buy their cars second hand can actually get electric cbis. Cars. Okay. Scarlett were going to love you and leave you to your last day. Enjoy your last day of your holiday there in athens. Thank you for actually staying on green issues as from today , on green issues as from today, businesses in england are banned from selling single use plastic cutlery, polystyrene cups and food containers. Its all part of government efforts to reduce litter and protect the environment. But litter and protect the environment. But for many struggling Business Owners, its coming at quite a price. Yeah, ray addison went to woodstock in oxfordshire to find out how two very different outlets are dealing with the change. Dirty streets and polluted watennays. Thats the legacy of Single Use Plastics. However, Single Use Plastics. However, from today, the government is forcing most Business Owners to go green or face tough fines at the more than 300 year old Blenheim Palace in woodstock , Blenheim Palace in woodstock, theyre replacing half a million single use coffee cups with 17,000. That can be washed and returned, saving 35 tonnes of co2. David green is head of co2. David green is head of innovation. Innovation. When we serve over 400,000 hot drinks at blenheim and many of those cups, even though theyre compostable, can only be composted up to about 5. With food waste. So actually food waste. So actually eradicating single use cups really does fit into our overall strategy of becoming Carbon Neutral by 2027. The Company Behind blenheims high tech coffee cup revolution is re universe, which offers a range of reusable food and drink containers for under tony mcguirk explains how it works. This cup has some really neat technology in it, so it has a qr code on the side to give it an identity to you as a consumer, and it has underneath an rfid chip enabled in the cup itself. So that we know where the cup is and what its doing when it gets returned , youll go into returned, youll go into a coffee shop, youll buy your coffee, as you normally would do, and youll pay a deposit on that cup. Rather than heres that cup. So rather than heres a paper cup, throw it away, you now have cup that is reusable now have a cup that is reusable and re washable and youve invested £2 in it. For instance. So if you want your £2 back, youll make sure it comes back and gets washed and reused. Then the receipt. Then the receipt. Then the receipt. But revolutions are expensive. Of just a few minutes walk away from Blenheim Palace is smart fish and chip shop owner Richard Kamara says meeting the new regulations is costing him hundreds plastic bags. Hundreds plastic bags. Cups , lids, boxes , bin liners cups, lids, boxes, bin liners , other bits and bobs. Im going to lose easily £600 worth of items. This is just the latest challenge ricardo has faced to his livelihood during covid, he was forced to close down his restaurant. Now, after a brief time of being back on his feet once again, hes worried for the future. I lost a big, big time money around the covid. Then at the start to take this one over, i take another risk. Now this thing comes along again. So whats happening on the chips . Yes, please. Ricardo believes he has around six months to see if he can stay profitable. And in the meantime, his increased overheads will have to be passed on to his customers. Be passed on to his customers. As i kind of take from my own pocket, you know . So whatever i bnng pocket, you know . So whatever i bring it in, i have to increase in the price. The government says 95 of the public support the single use plastic ban. But at a time use plastic ban. But at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living , its impact the cost of living, its impact could help the environment but damage the high street. Ray addison gb news woodstock. Addison gb news woodstock. Its 615. If youve just joined us, lets remind you of the top stories this morning and the top stories this morning and the conservative Party Conference starts in manchester today. Its the first gathering today. Its the first gathering since rishi sunak took over as Prime Minister gb news is going to be there throughout it, bringing you every twist and turn a ban on Single Use Plastics comes into force in england today. Plastic plates , trays, plastic plates, trays, cutlery, bowls and certain cups and containers will be banned , and containers will be banned, but disposable vapes and supermarket ready meals are not included. Coming up for you, british troops will be deployed in ukraine for the first time, according to the defence secretary, grant shapps. Secretary, grant shapps. While our navy may be moved into the black sea , will that into the black sea, will that serve or harm our national interest. With the chip shop interest. With the chip shop thing . Yeah why dont we go back to newspaper . Oh, all those. Oh, all those. All those polystyrene boxes. They never used to exist. No. They never used to exist. No. Everything in newspapers. I mean, i know everybody would say that would be a very backward step. Its not so hygienic , but it never killed hygienic, but it never killed any of us, did it . In the days when it was in newspapers. No. You could read while you ate. Its recycling. Yeah. And anyway, theres always a liner, you a of a paper you know, a sort of a paper liner, isnt there . Even if there isnt, it wouldnt do you any didnt do a of any arm didnt do a bit of newsprint. Its going to get the its going to get to the point where almost you point where almost if you want to anything like that, to buy anything like that, youre going have to take youre going to have to take along own tuppennare or along your own tuppennare or bowl something, you . Bowl or something, arent you . Maybe and chips maybe well get a fish and chips in there. See, 3mm in there. See, i dont like yeah. You see, i dont like the idea of that. However, i didnt like the idea of taking my the supermarket my own bags to the supermarket and ive got used to that. I think we will. We have to get used to it is immoral. Get used to it. It is immoral. Single plastic business. Single use plastic business. Its bad for everybody, really, isnt used it. Isnt it . Well get used to it. Now, new Windsor Framework now, the new Windsor Framework border regime across the irish now, the new Windsor Framework bord comes ne across the irish now, the new Windsor Framework bordcomes into cross the irish now, the new Windsor Framework bordcomes into cross today. Ih sea comes into force today. The post Brexit Agreement post brexit legal agreement is intended continue trade intended to continue open trade between Northern Ireland and the repubuc between Northern Ireland and the republic whilst also reducing friction trade between friction on trade between northern and Great Britain. So it puts in new arrangements including red and green lanes, with the aim of reducing the number of checks on goods , food in particular goods, food in particular heading into Northern Ireland ports from Great Britain or the mainland. Well, lets see if our Northern Ireland reporter Dougie Beattie can explain it for us, dougie, because i think the rest of us find its very, very complicated as ever. Go ahead, give it a go. You give it a go. You well, and youre not the only one that finds it complicated in fact, the only reason that i actually understand it is because of reporting on agriculture for so many years. When you take any trade deal down to the bare bones , it down to the bare bones, it starts with food and energy , and starts with food and energy, and then you take it back further than that. The food you look at food four on hooves and two wings. I suppose, and you go from there. And really what youre looking a border in youre looking at is a border in the irish sea. What who the irish sea. What that who owns the border and controls owns the border and who controls the if look at that the border . If you look at that like neighbours between the border . If you look at that like houses, bours between the border . If you look at that like houses, both; between the border . If you look at that like houses, both of between the border . If you look at that like houses, both of you etween the border . If you look at that like houses, both of you haveen two houses, both of you have access to the wall. But only one of us that owns the foundation can actually say what happens. The wall. And thats exactly what has happened with the windsor document at Windsor Framework document at the eu now has control of the legislation on the irish sea border. This big border that runs down the irish sea is now controlled legislatively by the eu. So the sps, the steroid protection checks that are in that are controlled by brussels and not by Great Britain. So they have said the Great Britain, look, whatever comes across this, we want to see whats coming across the wall and going in to an area where theres a land border with the uk and the eu. And of course thats ireland is the only place of the uk that that happens and that has caused quite a few problems with supply routes in Northern Ireland over the past few years. And today we have to be careful on this because rishi sunak sold this deal as the best deal ever and of course what happened was businesses and all said, well, we have access to both sides and we dont need to do that much. And then the regulation for it didnt appear to the end of july. So now businesses are are having to cope with all these pits at once. So what theyve decided to do is phase in the framework document and this is the best fears that people will see the easiest first, because this is to do with supermarkets and the goods coming in and red and green lanes. So anything that green lanes. So anything that comes in here, there will be a manifest of it. Europe will have had sight of it. It will go into the green lane and come straight into the supermarket kits, other stuff that are maybe even going to retailers may to independent retailers may have a harder job, but theyve also this because also did this because politically in Northern Ireland, the document, it means the framework document, it means that unionists have came out that the unionists have came out of government here and will not go back in because they say they have no say, no democratic say over the laws are made over the laws that are made here. Would almost you here. And you would almost you would almost think that this was brought in. Now so as people would say, well, what was all the fuss about . But the real stuff will come in in january and october when customs regulations come into place and they will be much tighter. They will be much tighter. Well explained. Thank you very dougie. Thank you. So very much, dougie. Thank you. So the Windsor Framework comes into force today. The ban on Single Use Plastics comes into force today. It is the 1st of october. Today. It is the 1st of october. Wonder what the weather has in store for us. Lets go to. Hello, im marco petagna. Heres your latest weather update from the met office well see a mixed bag of weather across uk over the few across the uk over the next few days. Us seeing some days. Most of us seeing some rain at times. But when the sun pps rain at times. But when the sun pops through, it should feel fairly for time of fairly warm for the time of yean fairly warm for the time of year. Weve a bit a three year. Weve got a bit of a three way split weathennise the way split weathennise across the uk the day a slow uk through the day today. A slow moving of rain affecting moving band of rain affecting wales, northern wales, parts of Northern England, the north midlands, even working into the even at times working into the far england there. Far southwest of england there. Some rain heavy some of that rain heavy for a while, but tending to ease as we go the afternoon. Go into the afternoon. Whereas towards the south east its a brighter picture, mostly fine here with 1 or 2 here and brighter with 1 or 2 showers the and showers towards the north and northwest. But the sunshine northwest. But in the sunshine towards south east becoming towards the south east becoming quite warm. Temperatures here peaking or celsius amid peaking at 23 or 24 celsius amid 70 even 70 in fahrenheit and even towards 17 18 towards the north at 17 or 18 degrees. Its pretty warm for the of year as head the time of year as we head through and through the evening and overnight, that band of rain continues to affect some central and southern parts the uk and southern parts of the uk fairly patchy rain here and i think southeast should think the far southeast should against with clear against a fine with some clear spells, with clearer spells towards the north and northwest and showers again and a few showers once again toward northwest of the toward the far northwest of the uk. A warm night in the south at 15 or degrees, little bit 15 or 16 degrees, a little bit fresher the north at fresher towards the north at near a 10 11 celsius as as near a 10 to 11 celsius as as for monday, well, once again, outbreaks rain affect some outbreaks of rain affect some central southern parts of central and southern parts of the anything, to the uk. If anything, tending to pp the uk. If anything, tending to p0p day the uk. If anything, tending to pop day in some pop up through the day in some parts. Heavy bursts parts. So some heavy bursts developing across parts of wales, the midlands and locally down the Far Southwest down towards the Far Southwest of england as we go through monday towards the southeast, a brighter picture a few brighter picture with a few showers and brighter with showers and brighter with showers towards the far too. North in north but again fairly warm in the towards the the sunshine towards the southeast. Marco, thank you very much indeed. Marco, thank you very much indeed. Still to come, aidan indeed. Still to come, aidan magee going be magee is going to be here talking all drama in talking about all the drama in the because its the last the gulf because its the last day ryder cup. This is day of the ryder cup. This is breakfast on gb news. 625. This is are you playing the piano . Piano this is breakfast with steven and an right. Should we have a look at some of the stories coming into the newsroom right now . And its been reported that british troops could be sent to ukraine for First Time Since the for the First Time Since the full scale invasion began. According to the sunday telegraph, the defence secretary, grant shapps, has plans to move a British Training program, not a fighting one, a training one into ukraine. And that news comes following his visit to the country last week. A fallen ofgems Energy Price Cap is now in effect amid concerns that we could still end up paying about 13 more than last winter. The regulator announced in august that the cap on a unit of gas, electricity would reduce the average bill to under £2,000 for the next three months. Some analysts predict the cap will rise again in january because of increases in wholesale Energy Prices. Wholesale Energy Prices. The Us Government has avoided a federal shutdown after both of the house of representatives and the house of representatives and the Senate Approved a temporary funding bill to keep agencies open for another 45 days. That new package drops aid to ukraine, but increases federal Disaster Assistance by 16 billion. And the bill funds the government until november the 17th. Funny, isnt it . The us 17th. Funny, isnt it . The Us Government always seems to be on the brink of total shutdown. Yeah, it happens a lot. Very odd. Aidens got the sport for us this morning. Good morning. Good morning to you. Yeah. So the last day of the ryder cup then . It is indeed. Then . Itisindeed. So then . It is indeed. So theres nothing quite like a row to ignite proceedings, is there . I mean, clear. Europe are mean, lets be clear. Europe are right out in front. Yesterday, theyve stellar theyve had a really stellar couple of days. They lead by ten and points to five and a and a half points to five and a half points. But it there was a late rally by the us yesterday. There were stories coming out of the Patrick Cantlay the us camp that Patrick Cantlay refused cap. The refused to wear a cap. The official team usa cap protest official team usa cap in protest at that the players at the fact that the players arent getting paid. Now you dont paid to compete in the dont get paid to compete in the ryder invitational ryder cup as an invitational event. You do event. Its something you do because your because youre representing your continent country. In because youre representing your concaset country. In because youre representing your concase of country. In because youre representing your concase of the country. In because youre representing your concase of the us,iuntry. In because youre representing your concase of the us, usa]. In the case of the us, usa specifically. Now, what happened was that got Patrick Cantlay, was that he got Patrick Cantlay, one the players, got some one of the players, got some stick of crowd stick from some of the crowd because because because and because he because of protest and some of the of this protest and some of the a bit of an odd protest. Well it was so the fans the fans started doffing their cap to him saying and saying to him and saying and saying they singing songs about to him and saying and saying the bank singing songs about to him and saying and saying the bank balance| songs about to him and saying and saying the bank balance and gs about to him and saying and saying the bank balance and that out to him and saying and saying the bank balance and that kind his bank balance and that kind of thing. His bank balance and that kind of iso g. His bank balance and that kind of iso he responded. He responded so he responded. He responded by by knocking this 43 foot putt on the 16th green in response to that to that abuse as a riposte, if you like, and his caddie walked across the line of rory mcilroy, who was up against this in the foursome of rory mcilroy, was not happy with this at all. He said its against golf etiquette. This carried over into the car park where for there was a slanging match between. So it was deliberate. So it was deliberate. Oh, well, i think it was it was deliberate attempt to was a deliberate attempt to distract mcilroy to put him distract rory mcilroy to put him off hes been in off his game. Hes been in imperious over the previous imperious form over the previous 36 hours or whatever. And as i say, big turn say, sometimes big events turn on and went into the car on this and it went into the car park. He had to be restrained by one of his team mates, rory mcilroy, shane lowry, and bundled to a bmw 4x4 to bundled into a to a bmw 4x4 to get from course. Now get away from the course. Now dont me wrong, europe is dont get me wrong, europe is still very, very, very still in a very, very, very strong but sometimes strong position. But sometimes tempers getting frayed. Yeah tempers are getting frayed. Yeah sometimes sometimes sometimes you just sometimes theres just flashpoint can theres just a flashpoint can turn the course of events. Do you think to miracle you think back to the miracle of medinah 2020 . When , medinah in 2020 . In 2012, when, you know, were looking you know, usa were looking unassailable and europe turned it on the day with it around on the final day with some brilliant putting and brilliant by ian brilliant long range play by ian poulter. Youd need a turnaround of of proportion for of that kind of proportion for aid to retain the ryder cup. I still think europe will be quite comfortable, but and i dont think maybe well get the climax that get on a sunday that we usually get on a sunday night. I just wonder whether night. But i just wonder whether the has possibly ignited the hat row has possibly ignited something in the usa and might just tip things and make things a little bit more interesting. We dont want a we dont want it to be a complete read through today. Im just a bit surprised because the americans because its the americans are very patriotic. It seems sort of unpatriotic. Im not going to wear not wear the cap because im not getting the dosh. Thats but then no, thats true. But then sometimes in golf, sometimes team sports in golf, its individual thing. Its a very individual thing. Its like tennis, isnt its a bit like tennis, isnt it . You know, its individual stuff. Then suddenly stuff. And then suddenly the davis around and davis cup comes around and youre representing your country. Been country. But there has been a precedent the past of players precedent in the past of players not really warming the ryder not really warming to the ryder cup. Woods famously, and cup. Tiger woods famously, and he deal of it. He didnt make a big deal of it. It of, well known in it was kind of, well known in the that wasnt the circuit that he wasnt really ryder player. He really a ryder cup player. He used to argue a little bit with phil mickelson, whos another big locker room. But big ego in the locker room. But he did go through motions. He did go through the motions. He did the ryder cup with he did win the ryder cup with the us. And does very the us. And he does have a very good there. Theres no good record there. So theres no issues when we look back issues there when we look back on his career. As i say, on his career. But as i say, team sports in a sport which othennise is a solitary othennise is quite a solitary existence s isnt isnt for everybody. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, no. Somebody said something that offended didnt they . Undennay from 11 offended didnt they . 11 10 undennay from 11 offended didnt they . 11 10 morning. Ay from 11 offended didnt they . 11 10 morning. Rickym 11 at 11 10 this morning. Ricky Rickie Fowler is up against tommy fleetwood. Go tommy fleetwood. So we should go into today and see into the afternoon today and see some good golf. Brilliant stuff, aiden, thank you. See later on. It you. Well see you later on. It is 630. If youve just joined us, lets you of the us, lets remind you of the top stories morning. The independent has the tories heading for a wipe out at the election, according to a new poll, and the sunday telegraph leading with the defence secretarys comments that british troops will be sent to ukraine not to fight though, but to help train their troops. To help train their troops. But its the first time well actually be sending people into ukraine, isnt it . Yes. Yes. Yes. I dont know why wed need to go. Weve already got people on the borders going in. Just seems to be asking for trouble anyway, well try and get detail on well try and get more detail on that. Go through some of that. Lets go through some of those then with editor of those then with the editor of spike, slater, and the spike, tom slater, and the broadcaster ramdani. Good broadcaster Nabila Ramdani. Good to see this morning. To see you both this morning. Tom, look the tom, lets have a look at the sunday times, because as as conference kicks off today in manchester for the tories, it seems like Kemi Badenoch is really piling the pressure on her boss. She is. And no doubt also flying her own kind of flag for the future leadership contest to come. But shes given an interview here to the sunday times where she, as you say, kind of puts pressure on rishi sunak on a number of fronts, one of which being the European Court of human rights, making very that its not racist. Very clear that its not racist. She would say, discuss she would say, to discuss leaving to with she would say, to discuss leaymigration to with she would say, to discuss leaymigration crisis. With she would say, to discuss leaymigration crisis. She with she would say, to discuss leaymigration crisis. She als0| the migration crisis. She also says she would be pretty says that she would be pretty relaxed further relaxation relaxed about further relaxation of net zero, saying were only 1 of emissions. Theres no point bankrupting ourselves in order of these order to meet this. All of these issues on which rishi sunak has moved somewhat, shall say. Moved somewhat, shall we say. But there is certainly pressure from not just benches, but from not just the benches, but even his own cabinet to go even with his own cabinet to go a bit further or a little bit further or be prepared go a bit further if prepared to go a bit further if the if the case calls for it. But of this is also but so much of this is also swirling around the fact that most people to assume that most people seem to assume that rishi to going lose the rishi sunak is to going lose the next therefore next election and therefore theyre jockeying next election and therefore the position jockeying next election and therefore theposition with jockeying next election and therefore the position with that keying next election and therefore the position with that inying next election and therefore the position with that in mind, for position with that in mind, it seems yeah, you dont it seems like, yeah, you dont think jockeying for think theyre jockeying for position for before an election, do you . Think thats what well, i think thats what will make the conference fascinating because fascinating sting because they all with radical all coming up with radical propositions, if you like i think badenochs proposal to leave the European Court of human rights sounds easy enough, but i think it will come with multiple associated problems, not least of all because the court underpins the good friday agreement for example. So pulling britain out would cause a lot of problem in Northern Ireland. But would it would it though, would it would it immediately negate any agreements done through the echr historic . Through the echr historic . Probably not immediately, but it would certainly undermine it authority. And i think more generally, the court would remove a Good Opportunity for people to challenge the state. But having said that, theres also a lot of grievance at the way the court can scupper policies of democratically elected politicians. So all elected politicians. So all these arguments have to be considered. Its not as simple considered. Its not as simple as badenoch makes out, but i think tom is absolutely right. I mean, it all ties in with a leadership contest for the tory leadership contest for the tory leadership and this echoes in a way , bravermans multiculturalism way, bravermans multiculturalism speech in washington, dc. And i think its no coincidence that she made that speech in in america uk politicians who show off in america tend to get a lot more coverage at home. If she had made that same speech in her own constituency in hampshire, i think you would have had less impact. And interestingly, there seems to be about as many people in the audience at that speech as there would have been at a constituency meeting. As you constituency meeting. And as you say, made to be filmed, say, it was made to be filmed, really. But interesting on really. But it is interesting on the question, which is to the echr question, which is to see opinion is kind see how opinion is kind of turning, all, because turning, first of all, because youve prominent tories youve got many prominent tories talking quite openly. Talking about it quite openly. Its something tory leaders have flirted but flirted with in the past but has often never really been a as much of a viable proposition. Weve sumption, much of a viable proposition. Weve supreme sumption, much of a viable proposition. Weve supreme sjustice,1, former Supreme Court justice, come out recently to say that he would support the echr would support leaving the echr that to that we dont need the echr to protect human rights. And i think that argument is to going become much. Do we do we do we need the echr to protect our im echr to protect our human . Im just of we have a just thinking of when we have a problem. Just us never mind migrants, us already have migrants, us already we have a problem something in the problem with something in the state. We always state. We at least we always feel youve got european feel youve got the European Court rights to appeal court of human rights to appeal to. We lost that, would that to. If we lost that, would that be problem . Be a real problem . I dont think it would be. I mean, not least because if you think about some most think about some of the most core human rights things like freedom instance, freedom of speech, for instance, that something thats been that is something thats been encroached in encroached upon notjust in britain, but in france, in other countries, successively. And thats something has thats been something which has happened umbrella thats been something which has ha european umbrella thats been something which has ha european human umbrella of european wide human rights legislation. Also legislation. And its also i think its a problem when youve got court got essentially a Foreign Court making which impinge making rulings which impinge upon making. And upon democratic law, making. And because just its because its not just about its how but how you how you but thats how you perceive it . Perceive it, isnt it . It it a Foreign Court . I it is it a Foreign Court . I mean, we set it up. Set it up, didnt we . And i can see how its a vote winner to say get rid of it if people are being very anti eu but its not actually part of its nothing to do with it is it. Thats true but it is separate but its still perceived as a foreign entity interfering with domestic politics, where democratically elected politics, as you know, are are making legislation. Its are are making legislation. Its perceived as interference , as perceived as interference, as some would argue its necessary to have checks and balances to override, you know , perceived override, you know, perceived problems at home. But it i dont think that i think the point about having democratically elected politicians be in charge of their own policies is a very valid one and a very strong argument. Argument. But it was but but it was i mean, its all off the backdrop of the second world war, isnt it . Essentially, i think essentially, which is where you say democratically elected governments are not necessarily doing the thing. Doing the right thing. Yes, it was setting yes, i think it was setting a context of obviously of intense fighting amongst neighbours and it was all aimed at pacifying everyone. And, you know , everyone. And, you know, bringing about some checks and balances so as to avoid extremism. But, you know , at extremism. But, you know, at times things need to be reviewed as we live in a different era , as we live in a different era, one might argue, yeah , its interesting. Is it . Its one of those things i think a lot of us say, oh, no, we need to keep it or we need to get rid of it wherever you sit on it without actually quite understanding, understanding the depth of it. I think thing that would i think one thing that would be regardless that i think one thing that would be very regardless that i think one thing that would be very easy gardless that i think one thing that would be very easy fordless that i think one thing that would be very easy for politiciansit its very easy for politicians to hide behind these external organisations. Certainly happened organisations. Certainly happ wrong. Cant do anything goes wrong. We cant do anything because of the eu. Similarly with the echr, all sorts with the echr, theres all sorts of could be quite of things which could be quite convenient domestic convenient for domestic governments. Convenient for domestic gov reasons s. Convenient for domestic gov reasons why i think leaving the reasons why i think leaving it positive for it would be positive for democracy. Far as it peels democracy. As far as it peels away another excuse when it comes to what politicians have to no matter what any politician no matter what any politician says, intrigued by says, im more intrigued by what that former Supreme Court justice because hes justice has to say because hes someone who really understands what it does in the spectator last week, i think hes if hes saying in it, saying we shouldnt be in it, then actually does then that actually does make me think little bit. Have think a little bit. Lets have a look the situation in look at the situation in ukraine. Should we in the bill this is a sunday telegraph this morning, shapps, whos morning, grant shapps, whos now defence saying defence secretary, saying we could boots on the ground could have boots on the ground in Training Programmes. I mean , on the face of yes. I mean, on the face of it, the headline sounds very dramatic. It does , yeah. It does, yeah. It does, yeah. Because that would be some kind of escalation. But but as the article makes out, it makes clear, as you read on, it will be a an army leaders. I mean, be a an army leaders. I mean, grant shapps has been talking with army leaders about shifting an official british Led Training Programme into the ukraine rather than relying on uk and other nato members basis. So we would be the first to send people physically into ukraine . Yes, precisely. Yes, precisely. And you just wonder how that will then be perceived in moscow . Well, im assuming its not going to go down well, but i would also say that sending a british combat troops into the ukraine would certainly not be widely accepted in the uk. I widely accepted in the uk. I think that would be seen as a step too far, bearing in mind that escalation in any war is always very frightening, especially when you already have a devastating war threatening to expand to the rest. Expand to the rest. Yeah, i mean, even if you go into the shroud of saying its not nato interfere, its merely a Training Programme which then is questionable in and of itself. Those boys and girls will be a target precisely. They will have target precisely. They will have an absolute target on their back. But why send them into ukraine when theyre already training them over here . Yeah, over here. And on the border . Yes and on the border . Yes yes. One wonders why. Why go yes. One wonders why. Why go into ukraine . Certainly russia. And its certainly russia. And its very powerful allies such as china and iran would see that as an escalation. Yes. And as it is an escalation. Yes. And as it is an escalation. Yes. And as it is an escalation , frankly, it is. An escalation, frankly, it is. Its another step fonnard, isnt it . Fonnard . I have to say, im not i dont feel very comfortable with it. And especially because, as you say, you know, theres so much which is going on just across the in poland, in across the border in poland, in these the interview these comments in the interview even know, well even says, you know, well move into west ukraine. Into the west of ukraine. I mean, what really is the you know, im not an expert on these matters, but being in lviv rather than, you know, the edge of poland doesnt make loads of sense. And moscow, they will say and in moscow, they will say its are combat its a lie. They are combat troops wouldnt they . Thats what theyll say. You say, even mishaps but as you say, even mishaps could be potentially catastrophic here. Be a situation in it could be a situation in which moscow saying which its not moscow saying lets this base because lets target this base because we are british troops we know there are british troops there. It could just things there. It could just be things happen the context happen in the context of war, which easily spin out of which could easily spin out of control into world war. Control and turn into world war. Russia is a nuclear power. Russia is a nuclear power. Know exactly who is iran. Know exactly who is iran. Is always and of course, it is always worth remembering that the first foreign power put its foreign power to put its boots on russian on the ground were russian invading still, you invading troops. But still, you do think that surely we have to box things box clever where these things are make sure it are concerned to make sure it doesnt spread beyond borders . Id to know your yeah, id love to know your thoughts. Youre in the armed thoughts. If youre in the armed forces morning and forces this morning and watching, wed keep it confidential. Know, confidential. But you know, would you that as a good would you see that as a good idea if youve been out there training . I know some people whove been out training there in you welcome in in poland would you welcome the go in . The opportunity to go in . Actually into ukraine and do the training . Would training . I mean, what would happen under attack . Happen if you came under attack . Youve just got to literally stand exactly. Not stand there and. Exactly. Not not arms. Its just very odd. I grant shapps get a bit carried away with himself when he went to zelenskyy. He went over to zelenskyy. Hes zelenskyy is very maybe hes zelenskyy is very persuasive, isnt he . Yeah. Hes new into the job and probably wants to make and he probably wants to make a statement, right . Yeah. Yeah. Well, hopefully hell be cross examined in the cross examined about it in the tory conference over the tory Party Conference over the next few days. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sticking with armed forces and tom, the and things though, tom, in the sunday telegraph, the navy says use pronouns. Yes so this is a guidance document which was recovered by the by the sunday telegraph by stephen edgington. The report in there on the internal kind of Navy Intranet , which it was Navy Intranet, which it was Inclusion Week last week if anyone missed it which Inclusion Week national Inclusion Week excuse me and there was this particular document encouraging staff to use pronouns to avoid microaggressions , to even microaggressions, to even suggest that this is the micromanaging and this is fascinating. Dont give people unwelcome compliments. All this kind of stuff that you see floating around just get too much and it isnt part of an interesting trend, which is to say often talk about these say we often talk about these ridiculous woke sorry, excuse me guidelines going around corporations going around universities going around different kind institutions. Different kind of institutions. But happened within the but its happened within the armed forces as well. Theres been a sort of string of scandals even scandals like this, even more serious a case serious things like a case recently of the raf being found to have discriminated against whites recruits because of the need meet diversity targets. Need to meet diversity targets. So just interesting that so its just interesting that even talking even when were talking about the forces, armed wing the armed forces, the armed wing of the states, places that you would think would naturally would think would be naturally a bit or at least bit more sceptical or at least naturally things to naturally have other things to focus on rather than what was. But they say use but when they say not use pronouns, what they mean . So pronouns, what do they mean . So for say for instance, it suggests to say you were she her at you were, you were she her at the beginning of meetings . Apparently it should be good practise say hello. My name apparently it should be good pranne say hello. My name apparently it should be good pranne and ay hello. My name apparently it should be good pranne and she ello. My name apparently it should be good pranne and she her. My name apparently it should be good pranne and she her etcetera, e is anne and she her etcetera, which is kind of interesting. Military you a in the military you had a sort anyway, you just sort of rank anyway, you just know sort of rank anyway, you just knosurely, colonel, lieutenant surely, colonel, lieutenant or captain would make or captain or captain would make a lot more sense. The one thing id never understand about the pronouns is no one ever pronouns thing is no one ever uses your such as is uses your pronouns such as it is when not. When youre when youre not. When youre there of their. So its there in front of their. So its something which is almost pompous yourself pompous to talk about yourself in third person. Pompous to talk about yourself in justhird person. Pompous to talk about yourself in just callperson. Pompous to talk about yourself in just call meson. Pompous to talk about yourself in just call me captain. Just call me captain. Just call me captain. Well, yeah, yeah. I mean, look , it doesnt make a hell of look, it doesnt make a hell of a lot if you want to. If you want to explain your pronouns, then ive ive no beef with then ive no, ive no beef with it, i dont think it should it, but i dont think it should be obligatory. No, exactly. It, but i dont think it should be thatsory. No, exactly. It, but i dont think it should be thats always, exactly. It, but i dont think it should be thats always aexactly. It, but i dont think it should be thats always a difference. Thats always a difference. Thats always a difference. Look, youve just anyway, look, if youve just joined us, it is 646. Lets just remind of main news this remind you of the main news this morning the conservative morning and the conservative party today Party Conference kicks off today in manchester as the first gathering rishi sunak took gathering since rishi sunak took over liz truss. Would disagree on that, though. My experience of youth from my experience of youth with my niece and nephew, i dont know about nephew. I dont know. Do they have posters on their bedroom walls . Isabel always did. Yeah. It was always the vamps. You know was always the vamps. You know the vamps . And are there still posters on bedroom walls . See, athena, do remember athena. Oh, yes. And it was always that. It was it was the man or the hunky fella holding the baby. Yeah, there was the the baby. Yeah, there was the thing in the papers the other day. That baby, shes now about 30 or. Oh, of course, there was the very famous athena poster of the tennis girl walking away. Oh with hanging out with a bottom hanging out or something. Something. Think it was one of yeah, i think it was one of the most posters ever. The most famous posters ever. No, it wasnt disgusting. It was a bit saucy, but thats all disgusting. Anyway, thats. Anyway, thats. Have a look at this . Can we have a look at this . This instagram this this is from instagram this morning. Dogs and costume morning. Nabila dogs and costume parties. Have morning. Well, five kids. Well, my mum had five kids. No post, no saucy posters , no pets. Well, ill tell you the posters. My parents were more concerned about damaging the wallpaper. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. As far as pets were and as far as pets were concerned, my mum had five children, so she thought she had five pets at home. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. And any extra pets . I that is a handful. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What yeah. What about yeah. What about you . Yeah. What about you . Some. Yeah. What about you . Some. I dont get the whole dressing up dogs. I dont know. I feel bad for them. Its like you turn them into a little joke because they dont know the amusement, do they . Theyre just aside youve got aside from, you know, youve got like, whippet or something. Aside from, you know, youve got like, hes1ippet or something. Aside from, you know, youve got like, hes putet or something. Aside from, you know, youve got like, hes putetjacketnething. Aside from, you know, youve got like, hes putetjacket on 1ing. Aside from, you know, youve got like, hes putetjacket on because and hes put a jacket on because its thats fine. Yeah its cold. Thats fine. Yeah yeah. Anything more whimsical than that . Start to, you know i yeah, im afraid im not that they look nicer left alone people with fluffy dogs. People with white fluffy dogs. What mine is. Some like what mine is. Some people their and make people dye their hair and make them look all. Yeah, they abuse them look all. Yeah, they abuse the well , i dont know. Well, i dont know. Well, i dont know. I dont think it is abuse. It just shows they know theyre being loved, dont they, if theyre being pampered, i suppose theyre being pampered, i supposlong as doesnt do him as long as it doesnt do him any harm. And when you said some people do that, what you mean yourself . No, i wouldnt no, i wouldnt do that. Although at her although ive looked at her several thought, well, several times and thought, well, that quite but no. That would be quite fun. But no. She back at me a she then looks back at me with a wilting look. Yes, yes, she would. Yes, yes, she would. Shall we have a look at this instant . Graham, of a wilko shall we have a look at this instarbecauselm, of a wilko shall we have a look at this instarbecause you of a wilko shall we have a look at this instarbecause you know a wilko shall we have a look at this instarbecause you know thatilko store because you know that wilko stores are closing down all the well, the all over the place. Well, the one in worksop held a closing ceremony that apparently was very emotional. For its been very emotional. For its been a pleasure. Pleasure. Batus aukus. That is down. Were a great team , all of you. Were a great team, all of you. Ive been a great team. Its not ive been a great team. Its not our doing. Its failed. Its down to one particular person. Down to one particular person. Shes a. Part of some point, but shes a. Part of some point, but 26 years weve had the and weve enjoyed every minute. So thank enjoyed every minute. So thank you very much for keeping us. Well i think its right that they get a send off like that. I rather than just being sent home saying right thats the last day tomorrow. I think its nice because as that lady was saying, 26 years with some people, its a long time. Its a lifetime. Its a lifetime. And i have to say, i mean, you build friendships. I used to live in wilkos, so. I used to live in wilkos, so. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Youre always in wilkos just to get bits and pieces , gadget to get bits and pieces, gadget pieces, you know, cheap stuff and whatever. Always in wilkos. And whatever. Always in wilkos. Its a real shame when these things shut down. It is. Think they face yes it is. I think they face so much competition from online retailers. Yeah. That its a trend thats becoming inevitable and people buy everything because that seems to be the new shift in the last few years is that whilst people would buy bigger things online or, you know, buy things where need know, buy things where you need to catalogue of to kind of big catalogue of things, you want to be able to get any dvd you want, you want to get any album you want or whatever. People increasingly, especially pandemic, people increasingly, esp buying pandemic, people increasingly, esp buying everything, andemic, people increasingly, esp buying everything, even mic, people increasingly, esp buying everything, even the are buying everything, even the kind that you kind of odds and sods that you would go to a shop like would normally go to a shop like wilko to you get wilko to get. You can just get a big you could buy online. Its interesting because, john, one of our viewers has beenin john, one of our viewers has been in touch saying once again, hes about rishi hes talking about rishi sunak plans billion plans for sinking £1 billion into streets or into the high streets or something. Once something. He says once again, another wasted scheme of taxpayers billion taxpayers money, £1 billion to regenerate the high street. So petrol prices are going through the again. And then the roof once again. And then local councils through local councils charging through the charges. The roof for car park charges. Thatis the roof for car park charges. That is why people stay at home and one click and and order online. One click and you it in. But if you want you get it in. But if you want to to your local high street, to go to your local high street, youre going to pay for petrol and charges. Ulez and car park charges. Ulez Everything Else. No wonder people online. People are buying online. Yeah, think thats a really yeah, i think thats a really important it does important point. I mean, it does feel like things were shifting in anyway, it in that direction anyway, but it certainly by the certainly wasnt helped by the fact making fact that its making it increasingly for increasingly difficult for people to go to those high streets, which ask streets, which when you ask people, want to support people, they do want to support them. Just fact that them. Its just the fact that sometimes that convenience sometimes that extra convenience gets but yeah, gets in the way. But yeah, youve got to change the high street. Thats why ive said for a long time its no good throwing money at it, saying, well, lets keep street on keep the high street alive on life youve got to life support. Youve got to change high street is change what the high street is because its changing. I mean, changing scenario, the of the british high the end of the of british high streets end of so many streets mean the end of so many communities and thats so communities and thats whats so sad its also the end of a and its also the end of a wonderful aspect british wonderful aspect of british life. But as you said, pouring money it. Im not sure if money into it. Im not sure if thats the youre got to spend the the way. The money in the right way. Yeah, look, weve to yeah, look, weve got to leave there, nabila, tom, leave it there, nabila, tom, thank you. Well catch you a little later on. Little bit later on. Right now, well find out what the weathers going to be like us. Like for us. Hello, marco petagna. Hello, im marco petagna. Heres weather heres your latest weather update from the met office. Well weather well see a mixed bag of weather across next few across the uk over the next few days. Of seeing some days. Most of us seeing some rain times. When the sun rain at times. Today and the conservative Party Conference kicks off in manchester and well be there bringing you every little detail i yes, rishi sunaks first conservative conference as Prime Minister. But could it be his last . Theyre way behind in the last . Theyre way behind in the polls. Lots of unhappiness polls. Lots of unhappiness within the party about the level of tax and plenty of rivals who want his job. A ban on Single Use Plastics comes into force in england today, but businesses say theyre not prepared. And with ready meals and vapes to be exempt it. Many are asking if the bill goes far enough and users of some social media apps will soon be able to chat to famous people like snoop dogg and tennis star naomi osaka. All thanks to artificial intelligence. Our favourite futurist will tell us more. Oh, futurist will tell us more. Oh, ive never heard of either of those people. Those people. Oh, no, i like to. I wouldnt want to chat to her on al or anything else. What would you say anyway . I what would you say anyway . I just dont get that. No and why would you want to do it if you know, actually youre not talking to the real person. You know, youre fan know, youre a big fan of somebody john or somebody like elton john or tom hanks. Were about if hanks. You were talking about if youre a huge fan, you might want talk to them. Really in want to talk to them. Really in real, in real life. But why real, in real life. But why would you want to talk to them via ai when you know its not them . Yeah, its just something them . Yeah, its just something that sounds them. That sounds like them. Sounds looks like yeah, sounds and looks like them, know, not them, but you know, its not actually them. Weird. Its weird. Its weird. Shes odd. Anyway. Shes very odd. Anyway. Andrew will explain all andrew eborn will explain all a little bit later on, and were also asking if the era of the heartthrob over who was your heartthrob over who was your heartthrob that maybe you had a picture of them poster up on your bedroom wall or something when you were younger. Because one of the columnists is we dont they dont is saying we dont they dont make heartthrobs. Like what they used to. P no, i suppose its just because buy posters because people dont buy posters in the same way and all that sort thing sort of thing. Maybe they do. Mind you, maybe they do. Maybe they do. Maybe they do. Pop stars, its always pop stars, though, it . Stars and though, isnt it . Pop stars and movie though, isnt it . Pop stars and moyeah. Mean , im sure yeah. I mean, im sure i would have had a poster of the beatles, particularly paul. Beatles, particularly paul. Had it, but i would have had it, but i know i did have a picture of David Mccallum, Illya Kuryakin from the man from uncle, who sadly died last week, aged 90. I mean, my goodness , that puts it mean, my goodness, that puts it in perspective. But he wasnt just kids. He wasnt just man just a kids. He wasnt just man from uncle. And what did you say you see . You used to see . Ncis. He was you used to see . Ncis. He was that for oh, ncis. He was in that for a long time. A long, long time. Brilliant. I mean, he was in those old post war type movies. Those old post war type movies. In a lot of them. In he was in a lot of them. In fact, right in saying fact, what am i right in saying that the greatest that he was in the greatest shape . Certainly was in a lot shape . He certainly was in a lot of those wartime movies i so was david niven. Did you know . Not david niven. He was wonderful, though. David niven, wasnt he . Oh, dont make wasnt he . Oh, they dont make heartthrobs like that anymore, do . Do they . No, probably not. No, probably not. Touch anyway. Get in touch anyway. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Who was your heartthrob . Heartthrob . Now it is the first day of conservative Party Conference and the Prime Minister has already vowed to set out his vision for the country without, he taking the easy he says, taking the easy choices. Thats a bit ominous. Choices. Thats a bit ominous. Well, as he arrived for the four day event in manchester, he announced that is going to announced that he is going to invest than £1 billion invest more than £1 billion worth of cash into towns , worth of cash into towns, literally into the high streets is what hes saying, because he says the high street has been overlooked. Overlooked. But the conference isnt going plain sailing, of going to be plain sailing, of course, to course, because theres going to be from his party be pressure from his own party over things hs2, over things like hs2, immigration, of course, and net zero, of course, there could be some fireworks this week to tell us more, our Political Correspondent Catherine Forster is there in manchester. Morning, catherine. Still raining , i see. So morning, catherine. Still raining, i see. So a morning, catherine. Still raining , i see. So a bleak raining, i see. So a Bleak Outlook for rishi sunak or will he have an easy ride . He have an easy ride . Oh, i certainly dont think he will have an easy ride. Welcome to a very rainy manchester, a city thats not too keen on the conservatives at the best of times and of course, given all the speculation on that, it looks almost certain the government is going to scrap the government is going to scrap the planned leg of hs2 finishing in manchester. This is a really difficult time to be in this city. Now. Rishi sunak is desperate to shift those poles there about 20 points behind in there about 20 points behind in the last couple of weeks, hes been a lot bolder. One poll been a lot bolder. One poll suggests the gap might be beginning to close. So hes beginning to close. So hes announced policies like softening some of these green targets. Then yesterday , we targets. Then yesterday, we heard that hes going out to bat on the side of the motorist. On the side of the motorist. Given that the conservatives managed to hold on to uxbridge, largely because of opposition to the ultra low emission zone. And today we hear money for more high streets badly needed. Of high streets badly needed. Of course, we dont hear that much about levelling up from this current iteration of the conservative government. But conservative government. But even aside from his problems in the polls and the message to the country, hes got a battle to sort of keep a lid on the various factions within his own party because theres plenty of conservatives who pretty much think that the next election is already lost. So their focus is positioning themselves to give themselves the best possible chance when there is a leadership contest. So weve seen the home secretary Suella Braverman , very prominent in the braverman, very prominent in the last week, making her views about the echr known. Today weve got an interview with Kemi Badenoch the same saying we should be pulling out of the echr another 30 tories signing a letter to the Prime Minister saying they wont vote for any tax rises. And last year we had the liz truss government at conference in birmingham in imploding because of her unfunded tax cuts. This year we unfunded tax cuts. This year we have a battle going on within the conservative party asking for tax cuts. So theres nothing easy about the time rishi sunak is going to have here and we can expect all these leadership contenders to be very prominent. Liz truss is giving a big speech tomorrow , so plenty of rivals tomorrow, so plenty of rivals circling and yeah , its going to circling and yeah, its going to be an interesting few days. Be an interesting few days. It certainly will be. Catherine, thanks very much indeed. Lets talk to former labour and associate labour adviser and associate editor of labour uncut, kevin maher, who joins us now. Hes in sheffield. Hi kevin. Good to see you. I mean, look, presumably the key strategy at conference is going to be to actually create some clear blue water between the tories and the labour party. Labour party. Absolutely. I mean, this is the purpose really of the big Party Conference speech, especially when youre the party of government and Prime Minister. , its quite minister. I mean, its quite a thought that rishi thought really that rishi sunaks not even in office sunaks not even been in office for months. Its been a real for 12 months. Its been a real long, hard grinding rollercoaster year and its been a very, very tough parliament as well. Of course, with covid and Everything Else thats gone on the end of and have the end of brexit and what have you. So, you know, it you. So, so, so, you know, it feels like a very weve been going for a very time, going for a very long time, but this this is sunaks this is, this is this is sunaks last best chance to speak directly to the country to set out his stall, directly to the country to set out his stall , to update the out his stall, to update the pubuc out his stall, to update the public on his priorities that he enunciated earlier in the year, which is to improve growth, cut inflation, cut debt, sort out the small boats issue and the nhs as well. And i think if you were trying to be generous, youd say its a mixed scorecard on all five of those areas. The priority areas. So he comes into this week, i think, slightly vulnerable. Got a lot of vulnerable. Hes got a lot of people circling, obviously for his job. Welcome to being Prime Minister. That happens to everybody. But hes hes hes everybody. But hes hes hes got to try and hes got to try and spell he gets the and spell out how he gets the conservatives hole conservatives out of the hole that in. Freshens them that theyre in. Freshens them up and is able in the next 12 months to go back to the country in a general election and say give me five more years because im most things right im getting most things right and that at the moment is and thats that at the moment is a i think, tall order. Yeah. And even even today, first day of the conference, theyre announcing things that obviously are designed to make positive headlines. But are they going to convince anyone things like this billion pounds to be flushed into the heis the nations high streets. Its it feels a bit desperate doesnt it. Its a drop in the ocean. I mean you know thats the kind of i think what you tend to find often for the start of any any governing partys Conference Week is that tried to week is that youve tried to cobble together some, as you say , eye catching announcements, whether theres a lot of substance to them is a moot point. You know, £1 billion is obviously of money spread obviously a lot of money spread across the country trying to revive every dilapidated city and town, high street is going to go nowhere, frankly. So again, you know, the devil is often in the detail. You know, rishi sunaks big problem this week is that hes not made enough progress against his priority areas. Weve still got an economy and a cost of living crisis. A lot of people crisis. A lot of people struggling and a lot of the legacy, of course, from his predecessor, truss , whos predecessor, liz truss, whos doing the rounds , as your doing the rounds, as your correspondent was saying a few minutes ago, doing the rounds this week. Now now, the big problem think with problem hes got, i think with liz as she seeks liz truss is that as she seeks to rehabilitate her reputation , to rehabilitate her reputation, which was obviously pretty trashed after her 44 days in charge last year, she does so at the cost of rishi sunaks reputation. So everything she reputation. So everything she says appears to be a coded criticism of sunak. And the more criticism of sunak. And the more she shes kind of draws attention, the more effectively she campaigns against her own party in government. Now, i think there will be a lot of conservative activists and a lot of conservative mps will of conservative mps that will be quite it quite annoyed about that. And it might rishi might be that actually, if rishi sunak something sunak wanted to do something really big and really bold, this week to get the headlines week to really get the headlines , but why remove the whip , but why not remove the whip from truss . Would from liz truss . That would that would get the that would really i think , pull attention him. I think, pull attention to him. He position himself he wants to position himself this week no more mr nice guy this week as no more mr nice guy hes down to business. Hes getting down to business. Hes getting down to business. Hes getting down to business. Hes get very, hes going to get very, very tough weve reshuffle tough and weve got to reshuffle , coming well , were told coming up well assert authority you assert your authority you know you look look in a sense you know, look look in a sense of what keir starmer done of what keir starmer has done with jeremy corbyn, you know, when you when you when you when you bold you do Something Big and bold like the whip from like that, remove the whip from a regarded a predecessor who is regarded added as an electoral liability. It really does get noticed. And people perhaps give you a second hearing and this is what this about for rishi this week is all about for rishi sunak. Second hearing. Yeah. What about the labour yeah. What about the labour party of this . So because party in all of this . So because whilst know that a whilst you know, we know that a lot of the delegates a significant number of delegates at Party Conference are at tory Party Conference are thinking whatever happens , were thinking whatever happens, were not going win the next not going to win the next election. 100 of delegates at election. 100 of delegates at the labour Party Conference are going to be thinking , well, going to be thinking, well, going to be thinking, well, going to be thinking, well, going to win this, weve got it in we havent got any in the bag. We havent got any policies weve announced policies that weve announced anywhere one really anywhere yet. No one really knows what for , stand but knows what we for, stand but were to win. Were still going to win. Theres a danger complaint theres a danger of complaint agency there, isnt there . Agency there, isnt there . There is always a danger of complacency. And i think i think what you tend to find with a lot of labour certainly of labour people, certainly anybody that remembers anybody of my age that remembers the 1992 general election is that if you start to think its in the bag , fate has a as a in the bag, fate has a as a habit of creeping up on you and changing your plans. Habit of creeping up on you and changing your plans. So i think changing your plans. So i think i think the very top of the labour party, the people around keir be very keir starmer, they will be very cautious actually, cautious that actually, you know, government , it does know, this government, it does appear be running out road appear to be running out of road , does to running out , does appear to be running out of force does appear to be of life force does appear to be running ideas and a lot running out of ideas and a lot of its bad luck is catching up on but that doesnt on it. But that doesnt mean necessarily that theyre absolutely in. I mean, some absolutely done in. I mean, some of the polls even in the last week, showing narrowing , week, are showing a narrowing, you know, and that that at this period, 12 months out, possibly from an election , you know, is from an election, you know, is not, you know, unrecoverable for rishi sunak if he plays the game really, really well over the year and hes lucky that if inflation starts to drop back and the cost of living crisis starts to abate a little bit, and if the winter pressures on the nhs are manageable, that actually into next actually getting into next spring, not be too in spring, he might not be too in bad shape. But but you know, bad a shape. But but you know, hes to try and hes got hes got to try and deal hes got hes got to try and deal. To be master of hes got hes got to try and deaown to be master of hes got hes got to try and deaown party. To be master of hes got hes got to try and deaown party. Ande master of hes got hes got to try and deaown party. And i master of hes got hes got to try and deaown party. And i thinkzr of hes got hes got to try and deaown party. And i think i of his own party. And i think i think at the moment hes struggling to that struggling to assert that authority. Struggling to assert that auth0|to . Struggling to assert that auth0|to be a big cabinet going to be a big Cabinet Reshuffle ahead kings reshuffle ahead of the kings speech couple of by speech. Weve got a couple of by elections a few time, elections in a few weeks time, which difficult which may be very difficult for him. But if he holds them again, you moment you know, the moment and the mood quickly mood changes often very quickly in got in politics. Weve got the autumn as well. If autumn statement as well. If the economy be slightly economy looks to be in slightly better People Better health than some people think, if there is a prospect of tax cuts, perhaps in the budget next march, then all of a sudden the game can change very, very quickly. Just it just quickly. But it just it just strikes me the obvious thing that to assert that sunak can do to assert his authority Fractious Party authority over a Fractious Party with his colleagues with with some of his colleagues openly sort of sort of showcasing their wares is like is to take on liz truss shes absolutely toxic for the conservatives for everybody thats now paying higher Mortgage Rates due to her incompetence last year. Sunak incompetence last year. Sunak sunak should hold her to account. Withdraw the whip. It would be a thing do. A really strong thing to do. Mhm. Mhm. Wow. I mean mhm. Wow. I mean that mhm. Wow. I mean that would be wow. I mean that would be pretty brutal , wouldnt it . But pretty brutal, wouldnt it . But exciting things probably are going to happen in the next few days. You cant help but feeling though that its going to be the labour conference thats labour Party Conference thats going the one watch going to be the one to watch to see they really see whether or not they really can their wares can lay out their wares impressively enough. But kevin, thanks very much indeed. Great to you this morning. To see you this morning. Yes. The idea taking the yes. The idea of taking the has she done anything that would warrant. Warrant. Thats why i think its it would she would be brutal. Only if she says something thats, you know, amazing, outrageous. Amazing, outrageous. Yeah. Yeah. But i just i just dont know if that would cause more problems. Just make the tories look so badly divided. I mean, there are still a lot of people who like what and actually what she said and actually admire and tried to admire what she did and tried to do. So no, i dont think i dont know. But kevins a who knows but kevins a man who knows his mind you, might his business mind you, he might be swing things in the be able to swing things in the other day. But i the think but like i say, the i think its going be fascinating its going to be fascinating watching the labour Party Conference because keir conference because because keir starmer to come out as starmer has got to come out as potential Prime Minister material. It going to be able to make speech and quite make a great speech and quite a few others have got to come over. Impressive or theyll lose it. Tell us they need to tell us something, dont they . Yes , they need to tell well, yes, they need to tell us theyre do us what theyre going to do rather than just criticise the government anyway. Mccgwi re government anyway. Mccgwire was but Scarlett Mccgwire was saying hour ago, wasnt saying just an hour ago, wasnt she , that you the trouble she, that you know, the trouble with saying what they want with them saying what they want to do that then the tories to do is that then the tories pinch their ideas. Well, im not sure awfully true, but sure thats awfully true, but you theyre wary. You can see why theyre wary. Yeah, you know, look, yeah, well, you know, look, it happens, it happens. But you know , if they want vote , know, if they want our vote, theyve got to tell us what theyre going to do. And at the minute, getting minute, were not getting that. Were are we . Were not getting a lot, are we . Anyway one thing that is we do know is happening is that from today, in england are today, businesses in england are being banned from selling single use , polystyrene use plastic cutlery, polystyrene cups, food containers. Its all cups, food containers. Its all part of the governments plans to reduce litter and more importantly, really protect the environment, importantly, really protect the environment , protect the seas. Environment, protect the seas. But for many struggling Business Owners, of course, it does come at a price. Our reporter ray addison went to woodstock in oxfordshire to find out how two very different outlets are dealing with this change. Dirty streets and polluted watennay days. Thats the legacy of Single Use Plastics. However, of Single Use Plastics. However, from today, the government is forcing most Business Owners to go green or face tough fines at the more than 300 year old Blenheim Palace in woodstock. Theyre replacing half a million single use coffee cups with 17,000 that can be washed and returned, saving 35 tonnes of co2. David green is head of co2. David green is head of innovation. Innovation. We serve over 400,000 hot dnnks we serve over 400,000 hot drinks at blenheim and many of those cups, even though theyre compostable, can only be composted up to about 5. With food waste. So actually food waste. So actually eradicating single use cups really does fit into our overall strategy of becoming Carbon Neutral by 2027. The Company Behind blenheims high tech coffee cup revolution is running vers, which offers a range of reusable food and drink containers. Containers. Founder tony mcguirk explains how it works. This cup has some really neat technology in it, so it has a qr code on the side to give it an identity to you as a consumer, and it has underneath an rfid chip enabled in the cup itself so that we know where the cup is and what its doing when it gets returned and youll go into a coffee shop, youll buy your coffee, you normally would do coffee, as you normally would do , youll deposit on , and youll pay a deposit on that so rather than heres that cup. So rather than heres a paper cup, throw it away. You a paper cup, throw it away. You now have a cup that is reusable and re washable and youve invested £2 in it, for instance. So if you want your £2 back, youll make sure it comes back and gets washed and reused. And gets washed and reused. Then the receipt. Then the receipt. Then the receipt. But revolutions are expensive. Of just a few minutes walk away from Blenheim Palace is smart fish and chip shop owner ricardo kumara says meeting the new regulator , ltns, is costing new regulator, ltns, is costing him hundreds plastic bags. Cups , lids, boxes , bin liners cups, lids, boxes, bin liners , other bits and bobs. Cups, lids, boxes, bin liners , other bits and bobs. Im going to lose easily £600 worth of items. This is just the latest challenge ricardo has faced to his livelihood during covid, he was forced to close down his restaurant. Now after a brief time of being back on his feet once again, hes worried for the future. I lost a big, big time money around the covid. Then i decided to take this one over. I take another risk. Now this thing comes along again. So im going. Chips . Yes, please. Ricardo believes he has around six months to see if he can stay profitable. And in the meantime, his increased overheads will have to be passed on to his customers. Be passed on to his customers. As i kind of take from my own pocket , you know . So whatever pocket, you know . So whatever i bnng pocket, you know . So whatever i bring it in, i have to increase in the price. The government says 95 of the public supports the single use plastic ban. But at a time use plastic ban. But at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living , its impact the cost of living, its impact could help the environment but damage the high street. Ray addison gb news woodstock. Addison gb news woodstock. Its making us feel very hungry. But from now on, you hungry. But from now on, you maybe even going to have to take your own little tuppennare pot with you for your mushy peas and things that. Things like that. , maybe. Lets out yeah, maybe. Lets find out anyway, we . Andrew crook anyway, shall we . Andrew crook is the national is the president of the National Federation friers. Fish federation of fish friers. Fish friers. Fish fryers. Oh, easy for me to say. Joins us from leeds. Good to see you once again, andrew. What sort of impact this have . Impact will this have . I think many takeaways have already moved on to compostable packaging. I took the step in my packaging. I took the step in my own takeaway about three years ago. Has the other effect ago. It has the other effect its better for quality so you dont get condensation. This dont get condensation. And this is called bagasse, is a product called bagasse, which a compostable. Its which is a compostable. Its made sugarcane cane. So it made from sugarcane cane. So it does have a Carbon Footprint because china. The because it comes from china. The problem is they very problem is they look very similar to whats banned, which is polystyrene. So is the expanded polystyrene. So i think theres still an educational piece from the government for consumers about how to dispose them correctly i i i mean i mean , a lot of i mean i mean, a lot of people are getting in touch saying, you what about people are getting in touch sayingback what about people are getting in touch sayingback to what about people are getting in touch sayingback to the what about people are getting in touch sayingback to the days about people are getting in touch sayingback to the days whent people are getting in touch sayingback to the days when we going back to the days when we used wrap our fish and chips used to wrap our fish and chips in newspaper paper . Dont in newspaper paper . You dont have go right as far as have to go right as far as newspaper. I mean , whats wrong newspaper. I mean, whats wrong with wrapping up with just wrapping it up in paper . Paper . Yeah, we have news in shops. Yeah, we have news in shops. The problem is you dont get any portion control. So you can get consumers getting large consumers getting a large portion time small portion of one time and a small one next, you get one the next, and you get complaints. And also doesnt complaints. And it also doesnt protect it protect the products and it doesnt travel as well. And this day deliveries click and day of deliveries and click and collect something day of deliveries and click and collec robust something day of deliveries and click and collec robust. Something thats robust. Yeah. I mean , im intrigued yeah. I mean, im intrigued because theyve been the one guy we talked to in our report , you we talked to in our report, you know, like hes being done know, feels like hes being done out little bit. Youve been out a little bit. Youve been putting things in place for three years or so. Has there been enough warning about this . Been enough warning about this . I think there are. If youre a member of our association, obviously we update members and theyve been aware, but im still seeing people social still seeing people on social media i havent been still seeing people on social media of i havent been still seeing people on social mediaof it. I havent been still seeing people on social media of it. Weve i havent been still seeing people on social media of it. Weve just vent been still seeing people on social media of it. Weve just sett been still seeing people on social media of it. Weve just set up een aware of it. Weve just set up the independent Hospitality Alliance the Alliance Working with all the different weve different cuisines so that weve got government to got a conduit for government to send out to send information out to takeaways its easy takeaways out there. Its easy for them to update one of the big because just big chains because they just meet operations meet with the head of operations and things sorted. But and they get things sorted. But for independents , i for all the independents, i think a need for a way think theres a need for a way to get information out to operators. Operators. Will get used to i mean, we will get used to this, wont we . Yeah, definitely. I mean, as i said, weve adapted to it. They are a bit more difficult to get of for the girls get out of a stack for the girls serving the counter, but they serving on the counter, but they do they find do work. But if they dont find their into bin and theyre their way into a bin and theyre just discarded, theyll just act the plastic. And the same as plastic. And a lot of it even if it ends up in general waste, will be general waste, will either be incinerated to produce electricity in electricity or end up in landfill. So theres still a little work do. And little bit more work to do. And if leeds at the moment, i if im in leeds at the moment, i live at the other side of the pennines. Different pennines. Theres different coloured recycle bins from council its council to council. So its very confusing. At confusing. If im at my girlfriends over in i girlfriends over in leeds, i dont which bin to put dont know which bin to put waste things will settle waste in, but things will settle down and hopefully government will have some joined up thinking and you know, well adapt i mean, this is i mean, yeah, i mean, this is i mean, thats the issue everyone has with killing, isnt it, with recycled killing, isnt it, that we dont know quite that we just dont know quite where put all necessarily where to put it all necessarily or it, but its or what happens to it, but its different in different places. It is. Weve taken a step in the right direction. You right direction. I tell you what, send us a bag of what, andrew, send us a bag of chips, would you . Fired up yet, but its not fired up yet, but next time youre passing my shop, you can pop in. Oh thats a promise. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you very much indeed. Just fancy bag of chips. Me too. Lots of salt and vinegar. Yep. Tartar sauce. I like tartar sauce. Yeah. Yeah. You see, those are the things that used to take come in the little polystyrene cups. Yeah but i thats a bit but i think thats a bit unnecessary, actually. Splodge it probably is just splodge it on you. Probably is just splodge it on mushy you. Probably is just splodge it on mushy peas. You. Probably is just splodge it on mushy peas. Splodge it on mushy peas. Splodge it on a bit more of an issue with your curry sauce. Mind. Mind. But im. I i think weve got to do what we can to protect our fish and chips as well. More than the scene individually protect. I mean ijust individually protect. I mean i just protect fish and chippies. And chippies. Oh yeah. You know the one in my village is now closed since covid. Its completely closed down. Yeah. And it was famous as people used to come from miles around to chippy. Yeah. If youre a regular chippy user, let us know. I havent been. I havent had a bag chips for years years bag of chips for years and years and and years. Why . Well, and years and years. Why . Well, because me. No. Because the chippy near me. No. Well, i too posh . Gift over . Well, am i too posh . Gift over . No, the chippy near me, which i was always going to go to , which was always going to go to, which looked really nice. And then it changed its name to the fish and chicken. Oh, and its and i just chicken. Oh, and its and i just thatjust chicken. Oh, and its and i just that just really doesnt appeal to for you. Yeah. No. Chippies. Chippies should be a chippy. Just be a chippy. I dont just be a chippy. I dont want fish or chicken. I mean, they spell right . They cant even spell it right . No. So just put me off, you know. But anyway, maybe thats just me. I should maybe pop my head around. Still good head around. Still smells good when you walk past. Does. Have a bag ill bet it does. Have a bag of chips. Loyalty. My grandma and granddad ran a chippy. Queen street chippy. Really . Queen street chippy. Really . Queen street chippy in dalton. If youre if youre old enough to remember that still there that its still there at all. No, its no, its just a no, its not. No, its just a house. But yeah. So house. No. Oh, but yeah. So they, they ran the chippy. Oh gosh. So ive got hard running a chippy its work chippy because its hot work and youve got to stay at those youve got to stay open at those sort of all through the night almost. Dont you, to make it work because people come out of the pub and want a bag of chips. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Youve got to, youve so youve got to, youve really got to keep going quite so youve got to, youve reallintot to keep going quite so youve got to, youve reallintot to nightgoing quite so youve got to, youve reallintot to nightgoingitsiite late into the night and its very, sweaty work. Very, very hot and sweaty work. Lot of potatoes peel i well you get, you get a machine to do that now dont you. Well thats what she can do it any those peelers , it are any good those peelers, those scraping in chippies. Now you see the great big huge tubs of already chipped potatoes arrive and then hoicking them around. They get through so many. Hoicking them around. They get through so many. Yeah. Yeah. Through so many. Yeah. Yeah. Its. It is fascinating watching how a chippy works. That might be tea tonight. Maybe ill suggest that when i get home. Fish and chips. Fish and chips for tea that might go down quite actually. Down quite well, actually. Anyway thought. Anyway thats another thought. Of course, they have had some terrible disasters of their own, havent they . They . In the United States recently . A lot of it due to the weather. Should we find out what the weathers going for us . Hello, im marco petagna. Hello, im marco petagna. Heres your latest weather update from the met office. Update from the met office. Well a bag of weather well see a mixed bag of weather across few across the uk over the next few days. Seeing some days. Most of us seeing some rain at times, but when the sun pps rain at times, but when the sun pops it should pops through it should feel fairly the year fairly warm for the time of year. Got of a three way. Weve got a bit of a three way split the split weathennise across the uk through day. A slow through the day to day. A slow moving affecting moving band of rain affecting wales of Northern England, wales parts of Northern England, the even at the north midlands. Even at times into the far times working into the far South West England there. South west of england there. Some heavy for some of that rain heavy for a while, ease we while, but tending to ease as we go afternoon with go into the afternoon with towards its towards the south east. Its a brighter mostly fine brighter picture, mostly fine here brighter with 1 here and brighter with 1 or 2 showers towards north and showers towards the north and northwest sunshine northwest in the sunshine towards the south east, becoming quite. Temperatures here quite warm. Temperatures here peaking at 23 or 24 celsius amid 70 in fahrenheit and even towards north at 17 18 towards the north at 17 or 18 degrees. Its pretty for towards the north at 17 or 18 degtime its pretty for towards the north at 17 or 18 degtime of; pretty for towards the north at 17 or 18 deg time of year ty for towards the north at 17 or 18 degtime of year as for towards the north at 17 or 18 degtime of year as we for towards the north at 17 or 18 degtime of year as we head the time of year as we head through the evening and overnight, that band of rain continues some central continues to affect some central and of the uk and southern parts of the uk fairly patchy here i fairly patchy rain here and i think far southeast should think the far southeast should against with some clear against a fine with some clear spells , clearer spells spells, with clearer spells towards northwest towards the north and northwest and once again and a few showers once again toward far northwest the toward the far northwest of the uk. A warm night in the south at uk. A warm night in the south at 15 or 16 degrees, a little bit fresher the north fresher towards the north at near a 10 to celsius. As for near a 10 to 11 celsius. As for monday, well, once again, outbreaks of rain affect some central and southern parts of the tending to the uk. If anything, tending to pp the uk. If anything, tending to pop the in pop up through the day in some parts. Heavy bursts parts. So some heavy bursts developing parts of developing across parts of wales, midlands and locally wales, the midlands and locally down southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england. Southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england. As southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england. As through st of england. As we go through monday towards the southeast, a brighter few brighter picture with a few showers and brighter with showers and brighter with showers towards the far north too. Fairly warm in too. But again, fairly warm in the towards the sunshine towards the southeast. Ive had a the sunshine towards the southeast. Ive had a thumbs up for a chippy tea. For a chippy tea. Oh good. He he home he who must be obeyed said yes. Okay whos frying it or do you go to your go well go well go to well go to fish and chicken and chicken and well try it. Maybe ive been too unfair, but thats place to go. Its but thats the place to go. Its the only one near us. So there you go. Chippy tea. Oh , well done, you. Youve oh, well done, you. Youve got look fonnard to. Actually really excited. Im actually really excited. Im actually really excited. Silly. Silly. Its not silly, actually. Its not silly, actually. Its not silly, actually. I mean, its great tea is anyway time. Will you have that . Anyway time. Will you have that . If its tea. What time will you eat . About 6 00. Eat . Okay. 6 00. Eat . Okay. Thatl. Eat . Okay. That is then , isnt okay. That is tea then, isnt it. Now do you want to chat to now do you want to chat to your favourite stars as well. You be able to do so. Sort you might be able to do so. Sort of weirdly. Of weirdly. See by i. See by i. Yes , its all very odd, but yes, its all very odd, but our favourite odd ball futurist andrew paul, will tell you called it an odd ball. I know. Its 732. This is breakfast with stephen allen. Yes, good morning. Yes, good morning. It is now. Weve been talking about it though we dont quite understand what its about. In fact, been talking it down fact, weve been talking it down without totally understanding fact, weve been talking it down without t about understanding fact, weve been talking it down without tabout. Nderstanding fact, weve been talking it down without tabout. Yes, standing fact, weve been talking it down without tabout. Yes, its ding fact, weve been talking it down without tabout. Yes, its about what its about. Yes, its about i. Have you ever wanted to chat, for instance, to your favourite celebrity who would that be . Celebrity and who would that be . You be able to do that you might be able to do that now, sort of thanks to meta chief executive mark zuckerberg. Hes enlisted big names in sport and music and fashion to front a new range of ai chat bots on his companys social media apps. Yeah, so hes getting on board with with al by revealing 28 specialist chat bots based on famous stars. And uh, yeah , famous stars. And uh, yeah, lets talk to andrew eborn. Who knows all about these things. Andrew what is this . Oh, isnt it glorious . Well, um, its lovely to see you again. And was , as you again. And it was, as i predicted this very. Thanks predicted on this very. Thanks for having us. Table. Its good. Its very good. Its always a thrill. So, mark zuckerberg, what it its the first what it is, its the first in person hes had in person conference hes had since pandemic. And he since the pandemic. And he announced, as you say, it is. Announced, as you say, it is. And he says, though hes always around, he is always around because in because hes always there in your literally 28 your face. Literally 28 specialists, people , celebrities specialists, people, celebrities will become the voice of these different chat bots. So rather than this Automated Robotic sounding voice, you can have stars as Kendall Jenner and stars such as Kendall Jenner and snoop and naomi as well, snoop dogg and naomi as well, which is fantastic because she doesnt normally like getting out there in the public. And what we love about this , its what we love about this, its not just asking them not just about asking them questions , but also about questions, but its also about entertainment. So if you can entertainment. So if you can have your celebrity, have your favourite celebrity, youre david youre talking about David Mccallum David Mccallum earlier. Yeah David Mccallum earlier. Yeah David Mccallum actually married to mccallum was actually married to my ireland, which is, my aunt jill ireland, which is, oh yes, you see. Wow so, oh yes, yes. You see. Wow so, and she then married with jill ireland. Yes. And she then married bronson aftennards. How oh, sorry right. How amazing. Oh, sorry. That was. Thats all right. Going on a total tangent,. That was. Thats all right. Youre on a total tangent,. That was. Thats all right. Youre talking total tangent,. That was. Thats all right. Youre talking abouttangent,. That was. Thats all right. Youre talking about stars nt, but youre talking about stars and so and so forth. And so on and so forth. This is what at the and this is what at the moment in hollywood, theyve still strike still got the actors strike going. Sorted out the going. Theyve sorted out the writers strike. Part of that was to do and how thats to do with al and how thats going so jobs. Going to replace so many jobs. The reality is if you come the reality is this if you come to licencing arrangement, to a licencing arrangement, which happened with which is whats happened with zuckerberg wonderful zuckerberg and these wonderful celebrities about using your voice, then you can do that and solve. Can have can offer solve. You can have i can offer you immortality is what theyre sort of not terribly sure whether thats nice. Whether thats very nice. Mean, mentioned david i mean, you mentioned David Mccallum he mccallum there. Obviously, he wasnt record his voice wasnt able to record his voice in way that theyre going in the way that theyre going to use would still find use it, but i would still find it being able to it very spooky being able to talk to now. Talk to him now. Well, its interesting because you because it depends on what you want because looked want to do because weve looked at korea, at this previously in korea, for example, resurrected the example, theyve resurrected the dead, they . So dead, havent they . Yeah. So you can along your relatives dead, havent they . Yeah. So you can they. Ong your relatives dead, havent they . Yeah. So you can they. Ong record our relatives dead, havent they . Yeah. So you can they. Ong record memories. S dead, havent they . Yeah. So you can they. Ong record memories. So and they can record memories. So its not just about that, but you questions is what you can answer questions is what i announced this i like. Theyve announced this week might remember week as well. You might remember james gordon who week as well. You might remember jamnthe gordon who week as well. You might remember jamnthe voice gordon who week as well. You might remember jamnthe voice of gordon who week as well. You might remember jamnthe voice of bbcsn who was the voice of bbcs classified football results for 40 years. Thats right. Thats right. James alexander thats right. And it was the way Eric Morecambe east fife for four for five. And you may remember that sort well now five. And you may remember that sort resurrectiell now five. And you may remember that sort resurrect sorted. Now five. And you may remember that sort resurrect sorted. S010w been resurrect sorted. So theyve his voice. Its theyve used his voice. Its a chap, ive been in touch with him tim huckle whos done this and you can go website and you can go on the website and you can go on the website and can results read and you can get the results read in James Alexander yes, and in in James Alexander yes, and its been all his family , his its been all his family, his julia, his widow has approved it all to make that make sense. Wow so its glorious. Also, i talked about bruce willis. So people who can no longer act has who can no longer act and he has aphasia and so on and so forth, he licenced his face and his voice to a Russian Telecom company for which he was paid millions. You do anything for money . Well, obviously. Well, obviously. Well, someday. There you go. But. But thats the interesting thing. Look at that, thing. So if you look at that, it people longevity , it can give people longevity, money and a different way of making money. That that makes sense. Isnt a bit weird, well, isnt it a bit weird, the that its like its the idea that its like the its like movie stars of today like the movie stars of today could be the movie stars of all time. Absolutely. What time. Yes, absolutely. What happens anybody else . Time. Yes, absolutely. What ha| well, anybody else . Time. Yes, absolutely. What ha| well, thats body else . Time. Yes, absolutely. What ha| well, thats they else . Time. Yes, absolutely. What ha| well, thats the difficult well, thats the difficult new and yes, you dont new talent. And yes, you dont need it. Thats the reality need it. And thats the reality. If you can turn around and this is what arguing this is what theyre arguing about, fight at the about, the big fight at the moment actors around moment with actors all around the if you can record the world. If you can record somebody for just and somebody for just one day and then youve got their and then youve got their name and image and possible image and every possible scenario, them scenario, youll never need them again. Theres no no again. No. Right theres no no problems in the dressing room. No. Well, no. People not turning up well, but only talking about but youre only talking about their arent their voice, arent you . At all. No, not at all. No, not at all. Its absolutely. You can take their replicate their image. You can replicate it. Bruce does exactly it. So bruce willis does exactly that. Basically took his that. He basically took his whole work the whole face. We work in the world of holograms well. You of holograms as well. And if you havent yet, go down and havent seen it yet, go down and see the avatar. The abas fantastic where you look fantastic show where you look and feel as though youre really with the artists and thats what we love about this is the future. The future of entertainment every entertainment is that every possible thing can be replicated. A if a movie maker at so if a if a movie maker at the moment a director said, i want willis to appear want bruce willis to appear in my movie , you can actually my next movie, you can actually do that. Do that. Hes licenced his image , his hes licenced his image, his voice and everything they could actually create. Would it be convincing . Oh, no. Its a totally convincing. So also this happened at the moment. So Harrison Ford was to say Harrison Ford was going to say the new the new Indiana Jones movie got Harrison Ford a movie has got Harrison Ford as a younger yes so hes his younger man. Yes so hes in his 70s. Hes in his late 70s. They de aged him to 35 for the first half. The first half hour of the movie. And they can do all of that. Now, the great thing is, if i to wake up to an if i want to wake up to an diamond which diamond every morning, which of course with course we do together with steven, that. We can steven, i can do that. We can all footage. It means could. I could be at home in bed, asleep. Yes. But still also presenting this program and earning presenting this program and ear now, appetising that . Now, how appetising is that . Theres alarm call we theres no 330 alarm call we were the morning theres no 330 alarm call we were wouldnt the morning theres no 330 alarm call we were wouldnt the glorious . Show. Wouldnt that be glorious . And you can and you can do that. You can replicate with existing footage. Begin to see the i can begin to see the dangen danger, though, as well. Well, from saying , see, i can from others saying, see, i can see the appeal. Youre person if youre the person involved. The danger for involved. But the danger for anybody, anybody else. Involved. But the danger for anywell, anybody else. Involved. But the danger for anywell, andmybody else. Involved. But the danger for anywell, and thatsy else. Involved. But the danger for anywell, and thatsy el worrying well, and thats the worrying thing. Identity theft we talk about Identity Theft at moment. And people you at the moment. And people you think now you think you get an email now you can get somebodys voice phoning. Child or phoning. So if your child or friend or your parents or whatever phone you up and say, im in trouble, im on a different Different Things and they can even do an image. So you videos. You can have these fake videos. So how do we protect ourselves against well us is against it . Well consult us is the reality because so often this is why were talking about the threats of ai and were going to have an ai summit at Bletchley Park at the beginning of has of november. Rishi sunak has invited all the world leaders, some of them are coming. The some of them are coming. But the reality is that we need to look at how we can identify this sort of we living of stuff. We are living in a diseased Information Age at the moment and its going to get worse. Its fact deep fake , as its in fact deep fake, as its known, will become almost a normality. Normality. Oh, absolutely. And you remember a puffer. Remember the pope in a puffer. Yeah. Of stuff. Remember the pope in a puffer. Yeaiyou of stuff. Remember the pope in a puffer. Yeaiyou also of stuff. Remember the pope in a puffer. Yeaiyou also have of stuff. Remember the pope in a puffer. Yeaiyou also have zelenskyy who but you also have zelenskyy who was to putin and was surrendering to putin and a video all this sort of you have trump saying all sorts of extraordinary things. That was true but but could have true. But but but you could have this. So the question you this. And so the question you have to question in everything. Weve got clip i think weve got a clip actually , havent we . Actually, havent we . Its just the football. Its just scores. Oh, its just the football. Its just rather scores. Oh, its just the football. Its just rather fun. Scores. Oh, its just the football. Its jusiwonderful. Scores. Oh, its just the football. Its jusiwonderful. James es. Oh, its just the football. Its jusiwonderful. James alexander wonderful. James Alexander Gordon, listen to this voice. Gordon, listen to this voice. Premier league, aston villa , premier league, aston villa, six, brighton and hove albion one bow bournemouth nil, arsenal four, everton one luton town, two Manchester United. No Crystal Palace, one Newcastle United two. I mean , thats quite an easy i mean, thats quite an easy thing to that ones a bit easy. But what, what its still i mean its a voice from the past and thats what happens and nostalgia aint what it to be. Tim huckle what he did, he went ive been in touch went to and ive been in touch with very recently. With him very recently. He emailed because emailed me because i was checking what rights and checking him out what rights and licencing, because obviously he needs in needs to make sure thats in place the bbc the place because the bbc have the original to original footage you used to go out every time, out for 40 years every time, 5 00 on saturday, and it was Eric Morecambe as i say, it was every time he used to meet they were chums about 20 years were chums for about 20 years and never greet him and he would never greet him by name. Always hes name. He would always say hes five for four for five because he was the famous five for four for five because he twister was the famous five for four for five because he twister ever; the famous five for four for five because he twister ever. The famous five for four for five because he twister ever. And amous five for four for five because he twister ever. And youre tongue twister ever. And youre talking about your wonderful federation friers and federation of fish friers and your back to the future your fabulous back to the future is all this of alliteration. Its got to be there was always famous story wasnt always the famous story wasnt there, the you to there, of the when you have to read the football results, there, of the when you have to read you1e football results, there, of the when you have to read you1e footoall results, there, of the when you have to read you1e footo havesults, there, of the when you have to read you1e footo have tots, there, of the when you have to read you1e footo have to do which you used to have to do every afternoon. Somebody which you used to have to do every a off noon. Somebody which you used to have to do every aoff saying somebody which you used to have to do every aoff saying league ebody started off saying League Division arsenal three, you division one, arsenal three, you know, blah, blah. No, they know, blah, blah, blah. No, they got to of the whole got to the end of the whole thing they had one left over i oh, no. Oh, no. What . What . I also like the Scottish League cup if youve got time. There was a tie in july 2018 when that magical score it was 1 1, but it went to penalties and they managed to get that glorious score of east fife 4 4, 4 or 5 did. They did. And that happened on july 2018. Aiden will tell you all about it. Aiden will know all about it. Aiden will know all about it. Hes here as well. Hes here as well. Yeah, its one of those facts. You always had in yeah, its one of those factback you always had in yeah, its one of those factback ofyou always had in yeah, its one of those factback of your|lways had in yeah, its one of those factback of your head. Had in the back of your head. Yeah, thats the famous scoreline that james scoreline that is James Alexander gordon was a true legend, Alexander Gordon was a true leg one the radio stations he one of the radio stations he was doing the was working at stopped doing the classified altogether. Classified check altogether. And then another, rival station then another, a rival station seized opportunity then another, a rival station se start opportunity then another, a rival station se start doing opportunity then another, a rival station se start doing themselvesmity to start doing it themselves because people to look because people used to look fonnard voice. Yeah, you fonnard to his voice. Yeah, you could a as could tell if it was a draw as well, because it was. Yes. Arsenal one, tottenham one. Yes. Oh yeah, absolutely. Arsenal one, tottenham one. Yes. Oh heih, absolutely. Arsenal one, tottenham one. Yes. Oh he always lutely. Arsenal one, tottenham one. Yes. Oh he always had. Y. Arsenal one, tottenham one. Yes. Oh he always had that wave. He he always had that wave. He did, didnt he . Well it tottenham well it was tottenham to liverpool one it was but not without controversy though. I mean liverpool could have gone top with a victory. But this was a fiasco like , like this was a var fiasco like, like none that weve seen before. I mean, weve had our fifth season now of having var now liverpool took lead on well they took the lead on well they thought they the lead on thought they took the lead on in the minute. The lions on the 34th minute. The lions on the 34th minute. The lions on the pitch showed that the liverpool clearly liverpool player was clearly onside yard. Stephen clear onside by a yard. Stephen clear a. Now if the on a clear yard. Now if the on field officials dont see that the point of var is that you iron out that problem. If youre transferring human error into the box where human the Technology Box where human error meant to be eliminated error is meant to be eliminated and still they cant get the right result or the right decision, got decision, then youve got serious here and youre Serious Problems here and youre going to have to look at it again the who the again. The pgmol, who are the company appoint company who appoint the officials, had issue another officials, had to issue another apology yesterday to the liverpool saying this liverpool manager saying this was a clear loss of was a this was a clear loss of concentration. This was a acknowledgement of significant human error. Now thats a fiasco to me. Some some decisions are marginal. This one wasnt even close. Lo and behold , tottenham, close. Lo and behold, tottenham, two minutes later, go and score a goal. Liverpool two a goal. Liverpool have two men sent they equalise then sent off. They equalise then tottenham in the sixth tottenham score in the sixth minute of added time with an own goal minute of added time with an own goal. Jurgen klopp goal. Amazingly, jurgen klopp was quite conciliatory and quite diplomatic after the game, despite every right to be despite having every right to be in incandescent with rage and he said, look, i feel sorry for the guys who made the mistake, which was nice thing to say was quite a nice thing to say considering that lots of managers would have would have hit the roof. Talking about making mistakes , its to typos , but , its easy to make typos, but its confuses us. We dont about sport because it says in my notes here, luton town claimed a first league first Historic Premier League victory. And it also says luton one, everton two. So whats the. Yeah, we didnt get both that work. Well, we didnt get to two matches on the same day, i can assure you of that. But luton town first win in the town did get a first win in the premier in their premier premier in in their premier league they havent league history. They havent won this match. This the first top flight match. They because they they won since 1992 because they had absence. Of had an absolute absence. Of course, but they course, of 31 years. But they went , 2 1. So went to everton, 1 1, 2 1. So brilliant for them. Manchester united and Manchester City lost on the same day at 3 00 simultaneously for the first time in ten years. So that man city lost at wolves the second time theyve lost since since january. Man united Crystal Palace was it. They lost at home to Crystal Palace. Crystal to Crystal Palace. Crystal palace lost on wednesday palace lost there on wednesday in they went in the carabao cup. They went back roy back there and won 1 0. Roy hodgson, his fifth consecutive back there and won 1 0. Roy hodto Manchester United, where trip to Manchester United, where he and he has avoided defeat and turmoil for Manchester United. This worst start to a this is their worst start to a season since 1989, 34 years ago, when cumbrian businessman man Michael Knighton, nearly bought the club for £5 million. Thats as far thats as far back as were going here. Wish you had. Oh, yeah. Hes been on record many times. Bought carlisle many times. He bought Carlisle United in the end. Quite the same, is united in the end. Not quite the same, is united in the end. Not quite quite the same, is united in the end. Not quite fair,5 the same, is united in the end. Right now, up, new right now, coming up, a new poll of tory poll shows a third of tory voters plan to switch parties. Now, would be a nightmare now, that would be a nightmare for Prime Minister, wont now, that would be a nightmare for at Prime Minister, wont now, that would be a nightmare for at theime minister, wont now, that would be a nightmare for at the startiiinister, wont now, that would be a nightmare for at the startiiin conference . This is breakfast with stephen and ann on your tv, on your radio, of course, dab as well online. So you can watch us wherever you are. Kimberley has beenin wherever you are. Kimberley has been in touch. Shes watching us been in touch. Shes watching us in this morning. Good in riyadh this morning. Good morning. Morning to you. And gillian says, my heart throb was Steve Mcqueen. How could we forget Steve Mcqueen . He gorgeous. Were talking he was gorgeous. Were talking about heartthrobs. Lots of about heartthrobs. Got lots of ideas bit later on, ideas for you. Bit later on, lets bring you up to date with some of the newspapers this morning. Mail sunday suella mail on sunday has Suella Braverman at sir braverman hitting back at sir elton because criticised elton john because he criticised the handling of migration. The observer leading with a story that the education secretary has kept secret files on people who are critical of their policies. Their policies. The independent has tories heading for a wipe out at the next election, according to a new poll. New poll. Theyll love reading that this morning. The sunday telegraph leads with the defence secretarys that secretarys comments that british are going to be british troops are going to be sent to ukraine to help train their troops. Their troops. And daily star sunday. Oh dear me is talking. Oh, dont go there. Oh, dont go there. An england star who got a bit romantic with someone, but left his socks on as if we care why, thatis his socks on as if we care why, that is a real front page lead, isnt it . Ive had cold feet , isnt it . Ive had cold feet, but lets charm because weve got Nabila Ramdani and tom slater with us this morning. Good to see you both. Tom, lets have a look at the vaping industry. Should we . Yes. So this is their message to the government on the verge of this policy coming in to ban single use vapes. Just making the point that whilst there is obviously a distinction between the single use ones which is what is going to be banned here, theres often brightly coloured elf as theyre often elf bars as theyre often called, concern is called, which the concern is that young people are buying them and obviously you can get ones you feel and ones which you really feel and so making the so on. But theyre making the point use and point that single use vapes and vaping general has been so vaping in general has been so useful for people quitting smoking. Nhs, which smoking. I mean, the nhs, which is quite conservative these is quite conservative on these matters, has suggested matters, but still has suggested that is like north of 95 that vaping is like north of 95 safer and im sure most people have this experience. Anyone they know whos quit smoking is more often than not its because theyve switched to vaping or used as of bridge to used that as a kind of bridge to stop. So its just the unintended these unintended consequences of these things. Theres things. And i get that theres concerns but concerns around littering, but you could all sorts of you know, you could all sorts of things. Against things. You know, im against littering, things. You know, im against litterincould be dropped on things could be dropped on the ground. And its just again, ground. And its just again, there move in there has been this move in various countries to clamp down on i just find such on vaping. I just find it such a strain obsession, given the strain age obsession, given the fact Smoking Cessation fact that as Smoking Cessation tools go, its the best weve ever come up with , and yet the ever come up with, and yet the tendency is always towards clamping things. Tendency is always towards cla|yeah, things. Tendency is always towards cla|yeah, but things. Tendency is always towards cla|yeah, but i things. Tendency is always towards cla|yeah, but i think, things. Tendency is always towards cla|yeah, but i think, youthings. Tendency is always towards cla|yeah, but i think, you know, yeah, but i think, you know, trying to deter children from smoking is always a good idea , smoking is always a good idea, especially since these vaping devices come in different flavouring. Flavouring. The apple flavoured strawberry flavoured adults enjoy a different flavour because like tobacco flavoured vapeif because like tobacco flavoured vape if anyones ever have, its horrible. Horrible. So i think thats one of the things where thats interesting because no one, when people actually switch to they actually switch to vaping, they dont necessarily dont really necessarily because you just doesnt you cant just doesnt necessarily business, but you cant just doesnt nagreerrily business, but you cant just doesnt nagree this business, but you cant just doesnt nagree this is business, but you cant just doesnt nagree this is an business, but you cant just doesnt nagree this is an issueness, but i agree this is an issue primarily concerned primarily people are concerned about thing about teenagers. One thing i would theyre moving would say is theyre not moving on you know, you on to smoking. So, you know, you can your can kind of count your lucky blessings, same time blessings, but at the same time , of course, know, you dont , of course, you know, you dont want nicotine. , of course, you know, you dont wan i nicotine. , of course, you know, you dont wani think nicotine. , of course, you know, you dont wani think thats nicotine. , of course, you know, you dont wan i think thats justlicotine. , of course, you know, you dont wani think thats just a otine. , of course, you know, you dont wani think thats just a case. But i think thats just a case for making sure that you clamp down on shots when they sell it to than, you know, to kids rather than, you know, making board making it across the board thing because flavours because even with the flavours and that is and colours and so on, that is as appeal to adults as much to appeal to adults as it out, it is. It turns out, as it is. Whats the official age limit on now . On a vape now . Its 18. On a vape now . Its18. Is on a vape now . Its 18. Is 18, yeah. On a vape now . Its18. Is 18, yeah. Same its18. It is 18, yeah. Same as smoke. Arent more as smoke. But arent they more loaded actual cigarettes . No, not necessarily. No, not necessarily. No, not necessarily. But its a way to get you hooked anyway. But youre saying hooked anyway. But youre saying studies they do not studies show that they do not necessarily to. Necessarily transition to. Yeah, theres no gateway effect. Like for kids effect. It looks like for kids because kids has because smoking amongst kids has fallen it looks fallen off a cliff. It looks like just not doing like theres just not doing it. That be good. And that has to be good. And that has to be good. It used to be yeah, well, it used to be glamorous hold a cigarette glamorous to hold a cigarette and yes, i dont know whether the glamour isnt there with it. I dont it all. Yeah i dont see it at all. Yeah it you could have got i dont see it at all. Yeah it toy you could have got i dont see it at all. Yeah ittoy hangingju could have got i dont see it at all. Yeah ittoy hanging out. Wuld have got a toy hanging out. Yeah. Weird. Yeah. Weird. Nabila, we have a at nabila, can we have a look at the express this the sunday express and this lifeline being told for lifeline were being told for some high streets coming from the Prime Minister yeah. Oh, yes. So let me get the sunday express. Sunday express. Its £1 billion. Hes going to pour into our high streets. Yes indeed. I think i mean, this is a classic , in my view, classic, in my view, pre conference headliner line in traditional conservative supporting newspapers hours. I mean, this is very interesting because, you know, high streets are in a terrible state across the country. And effectively the the country. And effectively the Prime Minister is pledging to pour £1 billion to revitalise those high street shops, not least of all, because they face a massive threat from online retailers such as amazon, for example, and its also also aimed at, you know, revitalise communities, not just the shops, but the communities revolving around those shops. Is there any suggestion as to what theyre actually going to spend the money on . No. No. But how will you revitalise high streets just with money . Its than that, precisely. Its more than that, precisely. But i think this headline makes it clear that sunaks focus for the conference is going to be firmly on economics and, you know, his party is clearly in a bad way at the moment. You know, on on average of 18 points behind labour in the polls. But i think sunak Still Believes that theres Still Believes that theres still a mistress. List around still a mistress. List around labour economics and he still has a chance to win the next general election because of that mistrust that , you know, labour mistrust that, you know, labour are incompetent with numbers and incompetent with budget and thats what hes going for. It as well. Well, i mean hes got to be worth a shot from a political perspective, tom. Its a narrow path to victory, but its definitely there. If he to it, there. If he wants to take it, not least things are so not least because things are so volatile moment that you volatile at the moment that you can peoples in volatile at the moment that you can pollsyeoples in volatile at the moment that you can polls rise. Es in volatile at the moment that you can polls rise and in volatile at the moment that you can polls rise and fall in volatile at the moment that you can polls rise and fall quite n the polls rise and fall quite quickly. But hes a strange quickly. But hes in a strange position at the moment where his whole pitch, whether its on some the motorist stuff, some of the motorist stuff, whether net zero, is whether its on net zero, is essentially opposing policies that previous conservative governments have brought in. And thats thats a hard argument to land with the public sometimes. Yeah, but theyre clear crowd pleasers. Pleasers. Thats very true. And theres also hes making distinction also hes making a distinction between and labour, who between himself and labour, who very naturally to stand by very naturally want to stand by these kinds of policies, even if they of stare at their they kind of stare at their shoelaces people would shoelaces when people say, would you became you keep it if you became especially general especially so since general elections tend to be general rejection. So hes got to come up with a firm economic plan to, know firm economic plan to, you know. Firm economic plan to, you know , well to counter some of the cheeky oh well , were out of cheeky oh well, were out of time. I hate to say it, but we shall catch up with you both a little bit later on. Thanks very much indeed. Lets get a quick check on the weather. Much indeed. Lets get a quick che hello, the weather. So well, they have to be good then, so we cant go wrong tonight, can we . How will you conference kicks off in manchester and where there throughout the next four days bringing you every little detail i yes, its rishi sunaks first conference as Prime Minister, but could it be his last . Meals and vapes are exempt. Meals and vapes are exempt. Also coming into force today, the Windsor Framework replacing the Windsor Framework replacing the Northern Ireland protocol. Unionists say its just a border in the irish sea. In the irish sea. Day one of rishis deal. Is it business superhighways or green and red lanes with political potholes in it . Is the era of the heartthrob over . And who was your poster on your bedroom . Maybe. Maybe at the start of tory Party Conference. Maybe rishi sunak is somebody heartthrob. Okay okay. Possibly. Possibly okay. Possibly. Possibly stephen says mine was alexander bastedo. Do you remember her . No. She was from the champions. Dumas. Da da da the champions. Dumas. Da da da da da. And i interviewed Helen Shapiro as well, and she was wonderful. Was wonderful. All the big wall walking back to happiness bupa oh yeah. Oh, to happiness bupa oh yeah. Oh, youve got the voice of an angel youve got the voice of an angel. Ive heard this a lot, terry says. I was so in love with john taylor of duran duran. I with the hair i never was into duran duran at all. So i cant really picture john taylor, but ive heard loads of people say, oh no, he had yeah, he had the lovely mind. Everybody in the 70s had that sort didnt they . Sort of hair, didnt they . Anyway, was really every anyway, she was really every time was paper getting time he was in the paper getting papped time he was in the paper getting papped with a new girlfriend, id be so jealous. Yeah. Gillian says, my heartthrob mcqueen, heartthrob was Steve Mcqueen, the had and still have the poster i had and still have was of him in the film. Lemon the 24 hour road race where i believe he did most of his own stunts. Yeah. And im still in the bad books, he was beautiful. 50, 55 years later, john. But you see, most of those are old. I mean, thats what ive been asking you, who you had on your bedroom wall. Most of those are old stars. And you just do wonder one of the columnists in the sunday papers today says is the the today says is the age of the heartthrob over . Do we not have heartthrob over . Do we not have anyone like that anymore . Jill says, my dad heard me talk about abba, i was joking. But he abba, but i was joking. But he sent off a poster for me and sent off for a poster for me and i didnt have the heart to say i had been joking when i said how much i admired them. They are great though. I know. Any posters, send us pictures. Youre with your youre a youngster with your bedroom in them and bedroom covered in them and lets say you probably havent got picture of rishi sunak on got a picture of rishi sunak on your you never know. Your wall, but you never know. It first day of tory it is the first day of tory Party Conference and mr sunak already vowing set out his already vowing to set out his vision for the country without taking choices he taking easy choices as he arrived for the four day event in manchester, he announced that hes going to invest more than £1 billion worth of cash into the high streets in towns because, he says, theyve been overlooked fact. But the conference is not going to be plain sailing. Lets be honest. The pm expected to face pressure from within his own party over things like net zero immigration and hs2. So there could be some fireworks this week. Lets find out what our Political Correspondent Catherine Forster is in manchester. Morning catherine. Glad to see you been able to take the umbrella down. Yeah. How how good a Weather Forecast is it really politically for rishi sunak . Politically for rishi sunak . Not great. I have to say. Talking about heartthrob abs a couple of years ago, some people dubbed him dishy rishi. That is when he was chancellor, when he was keeping millions of people afloat with the furlough scheme, doung afloat with the furlough scheme, doling out the cash. But of course hes not so popular now that he is Prime Minister and particularly not here in manchester, a city never particularly keen on the conservatives at the best of times. Theres going to be protests later as a very heavy Police Presence here and armed Police Presence here and armed police , too. And of course , the police, too. And of course, the rumour that it seems extremely likely that the government are going to axe the hs2 part of the line from birmingham through to manchester. So not much love for rishi sunak outside the walls of conference, but he has over the last couple of weeks been much bolder. Weve heard so much about the five pledges. Theyre not going terribly well, but over the last week or two, hes rowed back on some green targets. Hes come out yesterday and say that conservatives are on the side of the motorists. Thats of course, influenced by the fact that they unexpectedly held onto uxbridge largely because of opposition to the ultra low emission zone. Today we hear that theyre announcing more money for towns to help level up our high streets. Levelling up is something that we dont hear as much about as we dont hear as much about as we did under Boris Johnson, but certainly i think he will take some comfort from the fact that a poll out today puts the lead of labours lead at just ten points. Now, i say just eight, andits points. Now, i say just eight, and its only one poll, but for about a year the polls have had labour 20 points ahead. So rishi labour 20 points ahead. So rishi sunaki labour 20 points ahead. So rishi sunak i think will take some some comfort from that. But meanwhile hes trying to keep a lid on all the factions in his own party and theres plenty of conservatives who frankly think that the next election is already lost and they are jostling to put themselves in the best possible position for a leadership election. So weve heard a lot from the home secretary in the last week talking about the echr today. Theres an interview with Kemi Badenoch, who we know would also rather like to lead the conservative party at and liz truss. Yes remember her this time last year, the government was imploding because of her unfunded tax cuts. This year , 30 unfunded tax cuts. This year, 30 conservatives are writing to rishi sunak, saying that there must be no tax rises. But liz must be no tax rises. But liz truss is giving a big speech tomorrow on growth. So lots of rivals is circling and a tricky few days ahead for the Prime Minister. Okay, catherine, thank you. Lets have a view from the labour side then. A former political secretary to tony blair, John Mcternan , good to blair, John Mcternan, good to see you. John as always. I mean, how tricky do you think this is going to be so the Conference Week is always a great week for a party because their stories and whats going on at conference dominates the news. And when youre on the up, youre united, youre confident , youre brimming with energy and ideas. And when youre on and ideas. And when youre on the way down, you have stories about infighting. You have commentators chuckling slightly when they report. As we just got on that in that recent piece , on that in that recent piece, people going, you know, reality. You see the reality of briefing in the sunday papers by a bunch of people positioning themselves not to support the Prime Minister, to but to be the next leader of the conservative party. And the infighting which is coming out in lots of the lots of the reports this morning on tv, radio, in the papers , on tv, radio, in the papers, thats going to be coming out more and more during the week. Because what happens when you bnng because what happens when you bring a Political Party together is get all the politicians is you get all the politicians in one place, all the journalists and journalists in one place, and you people gossiping and you get people gossiping and drinking gossiping. And so drinking and gossiping. And so i think if youre in disciplined conference magnifies it. If youre disciplined, conference magnifies it. So i think this is going to be a rocky week for rishi. And he has a long way. Absolutely. From being the rishi dishy of your hes hes a relaunch rishi and you should always fear being a politician if someone says to you, boss, we want to do a relaunch because ive never come across a political relaunch thats ever worked. It actually shows that youre weak and youre and youre weak and youre and youre falling and the question is, whats whats the message of this week . And we know hanging over the week is the cancellation of hs2. So going to manchester to threaten the cancellation of a major rail project. It seems to be not project. It seems to be not really great messaging. And thats what youve got to look for. Whats the big themes and whats little themes . What whats the little themes . What are behaviours . Whats the little themes . What are yeah, ehaviours . Whats the little themes . What are yeah, isntours . Whats the little themes . What are yeah, isnt it rs . Whats the little themes . What are yeah, isnt it fascinating as yeah, isnt it fascinating as well though . Because i mean, this is one election they really, really want to win and yet they are looking so divided. Its the one time they need to look really, really united. And i doubt he can do that in the next four days. No, i think thats right. I think the and i think the we all know from our own lives the best discipline is self discipline. Its impossible to make a party be disciplined. The partys got be disciplined. The partys got to want to be disciplined. And to want to be disciplined. And youll see when labour come next week the sense of what happens when you feel on the up, when youre optimistic. This is what youre optimistic. This is what youre seeing in this week. I think in manchester is going to be a party that is impossible to discipline cats are to herd. Discipline as cats are to herd. Yeah, well , fair point. Yeah, well, fair point. Yeah, well, fair point. I tell you what though. Which which which may well work in their favour is theres not a theres not a lot of love for theres not a lot of love for the labour party is there. I mean there are clear dividing lines emerging and the governments pushing that, but theres no real love for keir starmer armour and he keeps making these blunders doesnt he . Was, it was he . I mean it was, it was all this about we dont this business about we dont want to deviate from , from the want to deviate from, from the eu that he said a couple of weeks ago was in response to a question you asked him. Exactly. And what he actually said i think is utterly unconscious. Herschel labour unconscious. Herschel labour will not weaken labour standards. Labour will not weaken food standards , labour weaken food standards, labour will not weaken any environmental standards. Now the tory party made an incredible fuss about that. The Tory Central Office operation. I Central Office operation. I dont think there is a group of voters out there who go shouting, what do we want . We want lower standards at work , want lower standards at work, lower standards of our food and lower standards of our food and lower environmental standards. I think in contrast, you see the controversy around pumping sewage into the sea, pumping sewage into the sea, pumping sewage into the sea, pumping sewage into our rivers. Thats sewage into our rivers. Thats been really bad for the for the government image and kind of at the moment theres a huge contest about what you contest about whats what do you choose, whats best image of choose, whats the best image of a thats run into the a government thats run into the run buffers . Is it hs2 run into the buffers . Is it hs2 being cancelled . It sewage in being cancelled . Is it sewage in the sea, in the rivers, or is it, you know, the concrete, the crumbling concrete thats making schools be in . Theres schools unsafe to be in . Theres so images of decay and so many images of decay and neglect of our country that are the responsibility of rishi sunak and the conservative party and is keir popular or unpopular or is he doing his job . Well, hes on his third Prime Minister. Theres no theres never been a labour leader in opposition who has seen off two Prime Ministers and is in a substantial poll lead over the third Prime Minister facing him. So i think hes doing something right id say having had the right and id say having had the turmoil of truss having had partygate and all the breaking of the rules by Boris Johnson johnson, the joker, now with , johnson, the joker, now with, with, with rishi and keir, youve got a choice between two men who are offering plans for the future. But rishi cant fix the future. But rishi cant fix the current day problems he cant fix. He cant deliver his five pledges. So hes trying to change the conversation. Whereas i think at conference next week youll see keir unveil the 4 or 5 pledges he wants to campaign on in a very voter friendly way. Theres lots of policy theyve now got to sell it er really. Keir starmers pledges next. I would advise against anyone making pledges at the moment. John, its great to talk to you. Thanks very much indeed. Yes all eyes may be on the tory Party Conference at the moment, but i think really interesting one think the really interesting one is the labour party is going to be the labour Party Conference because are going conference because we are going to hear what those to want to hear what those pledges may be. Yeah, it seems crazy pledges. I mean, ill tell you what i found interesting with john. Theyre know, theyre saying, you know, theres, you know, rishi sunak maybe trying to get on with it, but he cant solve these problems you and thats a problems, you know, and thats a fair but can keir fair assessment. But can keir starmer, because hes not said how hes going to solve any of these problems and he wont want to say it and he wont want to say it . No. Will it be a limp no. So will it be a limp conference from their point of view . I dont know. Ill tell you what worries me about this whole election is theres of dissatisfied theres a lot of dissatisfied tories of tories and there are a lot of people arent inspired by people who arent inspired by labour and a lot of people, voters , potential voters anyway, voters, potential voters anyway, who are just fed up with the whole mess. So does that mean were going to have a really low turnout, which which i think is terrible for democracy if theres a turnout because theres a low turnout because you want the majority of people all saying who should run the country , not a minority , i country, notjust a minority, i dont know. A lot can change. Maybe well feel differently in six months time. We need to get more excited about politics. Its easier said than done. Theyre not a lot for theyre not giving a lot for us be very excited about, though. No, theyre not. I know. I know. Were going to be talking to youth panels in the to some youth panels in the coming weeks and the run up to all this, which i think might all of this, which i think might be interesting to get that be quite interesting to get that youth. Sometimes it can youth. I know sometimes it can be bit irritating if youre of be a bit irritating if youre of the what do the older generation, what do they actually theyre they know . But actually theyre they know . But actually theyre the generation. Oh gosh, the next generation. Oh gosh, arent so got to arent they . So youve got to have injection of youth have that injection of youth and see they as well as see what they want as well as what everybody else. Do care. They really and they do care. They really do. Be interesting to see whether they are disillusioned with politicians whether they are disillusioned wiwhether politicians whether they are disillusioned wiwhether they politicians whether they are disillusioned wiwhether they actuallyiticians whether they are disillusioned wiwhether they actually do ans whether they are disillusioned wiwhether they actually do see or whether they actually do see some fonnard. Some way fonnard. That the well, one thing that the government is from government is doing is from today, in england are today, businesses in england are being from single being banned from selling single use plastic cutlery, polystyrene , food containers. Its all part of plans to reduce litter , but of plans to reduce litter, but actually protect the environment because its a huge problem for the oceans. Actually, all. But of course, it comes at a price and that price is Business Owners who are struggling already. Well , our reporter ray well, our reporter ray addison went to woodstock in oxfordshire to find out how two very different businesses are deaung very different businesses are dealing with the change. Dirty streets and polluted watennays. Thats the legacy of Single Use Plastics. Single use plastics. However, from today , the however, from today, the government is forcing most Business Owners to go green or face tough fines at the more than 300 year old Blenheim Palace in woodstock, theyre replacing half a million single use coffee cups with 17,000 that can be washed and returned, saving 35 tonnes of co2. David saving 35 tonnes of co2. David green is head of innovation. Green is head of innovation. The Company Behind blenheims high tech coffee cup revolution is re universe, which offers a range of reusable food and drink containers. Founder tony mcguirk explains how it works. This cup has some really neat technology in it, so it has a qr code on the side to give it an identity to you as a consumer, and it has underneath an rfid chip enabled in the cup itself so that we know where the cup is and what its doing when it gets returned , youll go into returned, youll go into a coffee shop, youll buy your coffee, as you normally would do, and youll pay a deposit on that cup. So rather than heres that cup. So rather than heres a paper throw it away. You a paper cup, throw it away. You now have a cup that is reusable and re washable and youve invested £2 in it. For instance. So if you want your £2 back, youll make sure it comes back and gets washed and reused. Then the receipt. Then the receipt. But revolutions are expensive. With just a few minutes walk away from Blenheim Palace is smarts. Fish and chip shop owner smarts. Fish and chip shop owner Ricardo Camara says meeting the new regulations is costing him hundreds of plastic bags , cups, hundreds of plastic bags, cups, leads and boxes. Bin liners , other bits and bin liners, other bits and bobs. Im going to lose easily £600 worth of items. This is just the latest challenge. Ricardo has faced to his livelihood. During covid, he his livelihood. During covid, he was forced to close down his restaurant. Now, after a brief restaurant. Now, after a brief time of being back on his feet, once again, hes worried for the future. Future. I lost a big, big time money around the covid. Then i decided to take this one over. I take another risk. Now this thing another risk. Now this thing comes along again. Salts of comes along again. Salts of vinegar on the chips. Comes along again. Salts of vinegar on the chips. Yes, please. Ricardo believes he has around six months to see if he can stay profitable all. And in the meantime, his increased overheads will have to be passed on to his customers. On to his customers. I kind of take from my own pocket, you know. So whatever i bnng pocket, you know. So whatever i bring it in, i have to increase in the price. The government says 95 of the public supports the single use plastic ban. But at a time use plastic ban. But at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living, its impact could help the environment but damage the high street. Ray addison gb news woodstock. Addison gb news woodstock. Well, earlier we spoke to the president of the National Federation of fish friers andrew cook. I federation of fish friers andrew cook. I think federation of fish friers andrew cook. I think Many Federation of fish friers andrew cook. I think many takeaways cook. I think many takeaways have already moved on to compostable packaging , and i compostable packaging, and i took the step in my own takeaway about three years ago. It has the other effect its better for quality so you dont get condensation. And this is a product called bagasse, which is a compostable. Its made from sugarcane. Does have a sugarcane. So it does have a carbon because it Carbon Footprint because it comes china. The problem is comes from china. The problem is they similar to whats they look very similar to whats banned, is the expanded banned, which is the expanded polystyrene. So i think theres polystyrene. So i think theres still an educational from still an educational piece from the government for consumers about how dispose of them correctly. You dont have to go right as far as newspaper. Mean , whats far as newspaper. I mean, whats wrong with just wrapping it up in paper . In paper . Yeah, we have y news in shops. Problem you dont get. The problem is you dont get any control. So you can any portion control. So you can get getting a large get consumers getting a large portion one and small portion of one time and a small one next. And you get one the next. And you get complaints and also doesnt complaints and it also doesnt protect it protect the products and it doesnt well. And this doesnt travel as well. And this day of deliveries and click and collect, you something collect, you need something thats robust. See, thats problem. Fish see, thats the problem. Fish and isnt the yeah, but isnt that the problem . Its about problem . Its all about deliveroo just eat and all deliveroo and just eat and all these sort of things. Uber do it now, dont they . When you pick up your food and they do in certain parts the not certain parts of the world, not anywhere near i live, no, anywhere near where i live, no, you do. You get things delivered by little robots on wheels. You get things delivered by litt|oh bots on wheels. You get things delivered by littioh yeah, n wheels. You get things delivered by littioh yeah, butiheels. You get things delivered by littioh yeah, but thats just from oh yeah, but thats just from the co op. Oh, its not the co op. Oh, i see. Its not quite exciting is. So youll quite as exciting is. So youll have to drive out and get your fish and chips supper tonight. I may on. I may take me on. I may take me on. I may take me on. I might take a newspaper with me can wrap it up me so we can wrap it up in newspaper and like the good newspaper and feel like the good old days. It probably wouldnt let you do no, probably im not no, probably not. Im not having in a box, though. Tell having it in a box, though. Tell you that for nothing thatd be wrapped in paper might not be. Be one of those it might be one of those fancy boxes of bamboo or whatever. No, its not same. No, its not the same. No, its not the same. No, its not the same. No, wont. You want little no, it wont. You want little wooden fork . See, thats the other thing. Yeah. A wooden fork. A little wooden fork. Completely impractical. A little wooden fork. Contotallyr impractical. A little wooden fork. Con totally useless. Ical. A little wooden fork. Contotally useless. Ical. And a little wooden fork. Contwere useless. Ical. And a little wooden fork. Contwereuseiyeah. al. And they were fun. Yeah. We didnt have any plastic back then, did we . But i was on a plane just last week, and of the last week, and all of the cutlery is bamboo now. Is it . Cutlery is bamboo now. Oh is it . Oh. Oh. Well, theyre their oh, well, theyre doing their bit. Go. If we all do bit. There you go. If we all do our bit. Thats the point. All of these industries do their bit. At least it will reduce the plastic, particularly in the sea. Yeah, because you yeah, because whether you microplastics, i mean, were microplastics and its. And there places. There are there are places. There are places in is it the middle of places in is it in the middle of the atlantic and its actually a massive island islands made of plastic. It all just plastic. It all is just congregated together, stuck together. It is awful. It is awful. We have got to sort it out. Its crackers. Crackers. Crackers. Crackers. So to sort out. So much to sort out. So much to sort out. And talking of seas , the new and talking of seas, the new Windsor Framework yes, that comes into force today and effectively it means this is the problem , that there is a border problem, that there is a border down the middle of the irish sea in effect, cant really get your head around, can you . No, its the post brexit legal agreement the Windsor Framework intended to continue open trade between Northern Ireland and the republic whilst reducing friction on trade between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. So it puts in new arrangements including red and green , with the aim of green lanes, with the aim of reducing checks on goods, food in particular heading into Northern Ireland from Great Britain. Lets go to our Northern Ireland reporter Dougie Beattie, who will be able to explain it for all us. Good morning, dougie. Good morning. And if only i could explain it all in my dining room table is absolutely covered in so, so much legislate in and documents concerning this. And the only reason that ive actually got to get my head around it was that i spent so much time with agriculture and all trade deals start right there. They start with the movement of food and the movement of energy. And if you take it to its basic level, food is either on four hooves or on two wings. And that moves in and out of different countries. And out of different countries. And there has now been a border put down the irish sea because the only part of the uk that has a border with the eu, a land border, of course, is Northern Ireland, and thats with the repubuc ireland, and thats with the republic of ireland. So what theyve tried to do is to protect the eu Single Market at the same time as leaving Northern Ireland to be able to trade with its biggest trading partner. The other part of the uk. Now that has been quite a tricky thing to do. Weve had the backstop , weve had the the backstop, weve had the protocol and now we have the framework document which are all basically the same deal with tinkering around the edges, even the sea border isnt really a sea border. The port of belfast, raymond now is actually the border itself because goods are checked coming in and out of here. And today those green and red lanes will come into operation. But we have to be very careful around how we word this. This is a very careful around how we word this. This is a phasing very careful around how we word this. This is a phasing in of this. This is a phasing in of the framework document. Its not the framework document. Its not the full framework document. Its not full fat framework. So its not full fat framework. So this is the retail side. Its not full fat framework. So this is the retail side. This is this is the retail side. This is the side where goods coming across from Great Britain, europe will already have a manifest of what was on those lorries coming in and it will allow supermarkets in Northern Ireland to get most of the goods that are already had. In other words, bring it back to where it was before brexit. And that will start to ease things here in Northern Ireland for the next few weeks. But where we have to few weeks. But where we have to be careful here, of course, is that people will say, well, thats okay, the framework it wasnt as as all that. What wasnt as bad as all that. What wasnt as bad as all that. What was all problems about in was all the problems about in the place . Because of the first place . Because of course the unionists have collapsed. Government here collapsed. The government here and refusing to go back in and are refusing to go back in because they say they have no control over those legisla relative laws that are being made in europe. And of course theres meps here. So what theres no meps here. So what will the real battleground on this will come basically in the new year in january and next october because customs legislation has to be to be fought over and looked at to find out exactly whos going to win and whos to going lose. When goods from ireland are travelling back to the uk because that enforcement hasnt come into place yet and that may cause real problems for the Irish Economy and northern Irish Economy in the next year. Economy in the next year. Thanks very much indeed. Thanks very much indeed. Thanks very much indeed. Yeah, well send exam questions on that later on. Very complicated. Theyre very complicated. Theyre going to get worse with the new yean going to get worse with the new year, but do keep us across all of that. In the meantime, lets see whats happening. We havent got the weather. So instead, well whats coming up well tell you whats coming up in moment, which is all in just a moment, which is all the with aidan magee. Well, you poised with some views i and i am 5mm and i am i havent had time to read them. Oh, okay. Okay. I just thought you want to throw some in. But anyway, in the meantime, lets start with the meantime, lets start with the creme de la creme of sports broadcasters. Aidan magee whos here talk rugby here because lets talk Rugby World Cup, is meant be world cup, which is meant to be the of best right . The best of the best right . Creme la creme. Well, the creme de la creme. Well, the creme creme. And yet no creme de la creme. And yet no offence to scotland, but beating romania 84 nil either. Scotlands unbelievably fans tastic or romania just isnt that good. I think its a bit of both. I mean, scotland are not a bad side. I mean, theyll fancy their chances of beating ireland next. Well, i dont know. Theyll fancy their chances, but beating ireland next week would take them into the knockout phase. 84 nil against phase. But 84 nil against romania. Now, the world cup is meant elite of meant to represent the elite of any sport. Thats just what its there yeah, thats what you there for. Yeah, thats what you have qualifying yet have qualifying for. And yet youve got countries like namibia, tonga, namibia, romania, chile, tonga, samoa just kind of rolling over in of their matches. So 84 in some of their matches. So 84 nil. Yesterday, chile lost 71 nil. Yesterday, chile lost 71 nil england. Last week the nil to england. Last week the way its set up now, stephen dilutes the competition. The other problem is that it started on september the 8th. It finishes on october the 28th. Its almost like its almost like the Rugby World Cup season. Never Rugby World Cup never mind the Rugby World Cup tournament. When play tournament. When england play next it will have been two next week, it will have been two weeks since they last played. Now look at the football now if you look at the football world for example, you get world cup, for example, you get momentum a momentum when england play on a wednesday you wednesday win lose or draw, you know, theyre probably going to be 3 3, three years. Be in action 3 3, three years. You may have been talking about the cup three, 3 or the Rugby World Cup three, 3 or 4 yeah. And so i 4 days later. Yeah. And so i look at itvs peak audience last night, showed this game, night, they showed this game, scotland it scotland against romania. It wasnt contest. What wasnt much of a contest. What the getting out of this the viewers getting out of this its its peak time its a its a peak time scheduling seeing scheduling and theyre seeing these its these squash matches. Its almost to watch the almost like going to watch the wrestling in blackpool in the 80s and seeing set match 80s and seeing a set up match where, someones where, you know, someones paid paid almost. But, you paid to lose almost. But, you know, got to be done know, somethings got to be done about it because i mean, theres 20 frankly, two 20 teams i quite frankly, two thirds of them are there to make up numbers. Half a dozen or up the numbers. Half a dozen or so, england, ireland, so, including england, ireland, france, south france, new zealand, south africa, business win africa, there on business to win the when you have the world cup. And when you have a australia who a weak australia as well, who are normally very strong, very powerful well, makes a powerful as well, it makes for a poor tournament. Its too long, theres many gaps between it theres too many gaps between it and up prime and its taking up Prime Television time as well when it should should be used, should be, it should be used, used better. Used for something better. If its not if its if its not interesting, itll lose fans and itll lose television money. Will. But also look well, it will. But also look in the papers this morning and this is the rugby cup. This is the Rugby World Cup. England thing. England have won this thing. Ireland good chance ireland have got a good chance of winning time. The of winning it this time. The home are quite home nations are all quite strong, not much mention of it outside the broadsheets where youd normally rugby youd normally expect the rugby union covered. Theres not union to be covered. Theres not much elsewhere and much mention of it elsewhere and i is just playing i think this is just playing out, a limping week to week out, just a limping week to week to ones really talking to week. No ones really talking about it. Were not want about it. Were not gonna want it. Pubs around it. In 2003, the pubs around south london were absolutely, yeah. And everywhere. And everywhere. It needs so i just think it needs a bit of oomph from somewhere. And england are playing i think its samoa i mean samoa next next week i mean thats already thats england are already through kind of a dead through so thats kind of a dead rubber as well. Scotland ireland would the big game. But look, would be the big game. But look, lets, scotland did do lets, lets say scotland did do their they ran in the theirjob. They ran in the tries. Got bonus points tries. They got the bonus points and graham scored four and darcy graham scored four tries. But thats about as interesting gets right now. It almost sounds like a like a sort of manchester a its a sort of Manchester United derby. Manchester derby. A its a sort of manchester ushouldierby. Manchester derby. A its a sort of manchester ushould say,. Manchester derby. A its a sort of manchester ushould say, yesterday,er derby. A its a sort of manchester ushould say, yesterday, which jy. I should say, yesterday, which oddly united and man oddly in that man united and man city both played separately. Oddly in that man united and man citythey played separately. Oddly in that man united and man citythey both ed separately. Oddly in that man united and man citythey both losteparately. Oddly in that man united and man city they both lost on rately. Oddly in that man united and man citythey both lost on thely. Oddly in that man united and man citythey both lost on the at the they both lost on the at the same time the first in ten same time the first time in ten years both kicked off years they both kicked off simultaneously at 3 00 on a saturday and lost. The standards that thats the standards that those two clubs, particularly man the last man city obviously in the last ten have that time. Ten years have set in that time. But yes, i see it was more troubling. I mean, fourth defeat out of seven matches, thats their season their worst start to a season since 1989, very year since 1989, since the very year that cumbrian businessman, that the cumbrian businessman, michael tried to Michael Knighton tried to buy them. Almost got them. He was them. He almost got them. He was that close to getting them for £5 million. On the pitch £5 million. He came on the pitch on opening day of the season on the opening day of the season against and doing keepy against arsenal and doing keepy uppies alex uppies and i remember Alex Ferguson book. He ferguson writing this book. He obviously graham, obviously with george graham, the in the the arsenal manager in the office, had little tv office, and he had a little tv up corner of his room up in the corner of his room thinking, who the hell is this bloke . I quite like his skills. He enough to play he wasnt good enough to play football. Quite enough he wasnt good enough to play f0 getll. Quite enough he wasnt good enough to play f0 get the quite enough he wasnt good enough to play f0 get the deal quite enough he wasnt good enough to play f0 get the deal overjuite enough he wasnt good enough to play f0 get the deal over thee enough he wasnt good enough to play f0 get the deal over the line, jgh to get the deal over the line, but he wanted to buy it. Were talking know how long talking and you know how long before pressure builds around a manager fans . Because they manager their fans . Because they see 30 odd years see Alex Ferguson 30 odd years ago, coming into ago, 36 years ago, coming into the job, having a miserable first years. They think that first few years. They think that probably maybe first few years. They think that prob happens maybe first few years. They think that prob happens i maybe first few years. They think that prob happens i think aybe that happens again. I think weve the era where any weve entered the era where any manager only six games manager is only about six games away from the sack and you away from the sack and if you look opposite roy look at his opposite number, roy hodgson, example, is 76, hodgson, for example, who is 76, recover from illness two weeks ago, to trafford and ago, goes to old trafford and records victory records another victory there. Thats and thats outstanding from him and Manchester City. There Manchester City. Big story there as well, losing only their second january. Second game since january. The treble going second game since january. The trewolves going second game since january. The trewolves were going second game since january. The trewolves were struggling; second game since january. The trewlosing were struggling; second game since january. The trewlosing by were struggling; second game since january. The trewlosing by two e struggling; second game since january. The trewlosing by two goalsggling; second game since january. The trewlosing by two goals to ing; and losing by two goals to one. So entertaining day of so an entertaining day of football yesterday it gives so an entertaining day of footb. As yesterday it gives so an entertaining day of footb. As wellerday it gives so an entertaining day of footb. As well that it gives so an entertaining day of footb. As well that not it gives hope as well that not everythings through. Everythings a read through. Not everything goes as expected. Well, not quite. Its not quite as Rugby World Cup as diluted as Rugby World Cup have to say. No, no. Well, thats thats good. Premier league shorter. Premier league shorter. Premier league shorter. Got know whats youve got to know whats going little bit going on. Meanwhile a little bit of for luton yesterday. Of history for luton yesterday. Absolutely first top flight win i mean first top flight win since never since 1992. Theyd never competed premier league since 1992. Theyd never com theyi premier league since 1992. Theyd never comthey fell premier league since 1992. Theyd never comthey fell outpremier league since 1992. Theyd never comthey fell out of mier league since 1992. Theyd never comthey fell out of ther league and they fell out of the premier. They fell out of the top division at just the wrong time. The money time. In 1993 when the money came they went to came into it. But they went to everton yesterday, tuning up in came into it. But they went to eve firstyesterday, tuning up in came into it. But they went to eve first half. Rday, tuning up in came into it. But they went to eve first half. Fair tuning up in came into it. But they went to eve first half. Fair propsg up in the first half. Fair props to them. Theyve this them. Theyve played well this season the season so far, havent got the points, but luckily they got a win so theyll be win yesterday so theyll be thrilled lift to thrilled about that lift off to the of their season. The rest of their season. Be brilliant yeah, thatd be brilliant for them. To see the its nice to see the underdogs well. Absolutely underdogs do well. Absolutely aiden very much aiden thank you very much indeed. You talking about the ban of single use. Plastics comes into force today. Pauls raised a very valid point, actually. He says whilst i applaud the idea, the nhs has probably the largest use of single use plastic. I work for the nhs. The amount of plastic used is unbelievable. Even on one ward. Very true. So that must there must be exempt from that for medical. I mean i get through quite a lot of plastic with my medical device. Plastic with my medical device. I mean, when i was recently in hospital, every thing they everything is packaged little everything is packaged in little plastic away and plastic bags and throw away and but its huge sterile. But its huge sterile. Yes. Youve got to be sterile and presumably these other products that they use, corn starch is one or sugars and things which wouldnt be be the same they wouldnt be to be same they wouldnt be able to be sterilised in the same way , sterilised in the same way, would they . Sterilised in the same way, wotprobably not though have probably not though i have got doggy poo bags that are made of cornstarch. Really they look like plastic, but theyre cornstarch. Cornstarch. Theyre biodegradable then, arent they . Hopefully there is a and hopefully there is a horrible thought. Hopefully there you know what . There as as you know what . Well, resilient as plastic. Well, resilient as plastic. Well, resilient as plastic. Well, resilient as plastic. Well yeah, but they would be made to biodegrade after a while wouldnt they. Which probably quite quickly. Youve used it. Once youve used it. Once youve used it. Lets go there. Brian lets not go there. Brian says. Are coffee and tea says. What are coffee and tea shops going to do with the plastic stock that they already have . Bearing they cant have . Bearing in mind they cant dispose of them refuse . Dispose of them in the refuse . Thats true. A lot of businesses will have an awful lot of plastic stuff. I suppose the argument is should have argument is there should have been for it. Been planning for it. Its like our fella from the from the federation of fish friers , whos transitioned friers, whos been transitioned three years ago. Theyve known it was coming, so they should have phased it out by now. Yes. Should have done , i suppose. Well, hopefully they will have been advised anyway. Right. Lets get on. Shall we bring you up to date with todays front pages . Lets look at the mail on sunday leading suella sunday leading with Suella Braverman hitting back at elton john, who has criticised her. How could he . From his home in san tropez. San tropez. The observer has the story that the education secretary has kept secret files on people critical of schools policy. The independent theyre going to get a detention. Yes, exactly i come and see me. The independent leads with the tories who are heading for a wipe out. Thats according to their new poll and the sunday telegraph has the defence secretarys comments. British troops could be sent to to ukraine train troops and the daily star has a report on a footballer who got up to no good but kept his socks on. Great story. Great story. Great story. Lets go through some of those with editor of spiked, tom slater and broadcaster Nabila Ramdani. Ramdani. Oh, morning again. Thank you. Oh, morning again. Thank you. Oh, morning again. Thank you. Oh, yes. Good to see you. Lets have a look at the observer. Nabila a third of tory voters will switch at the next election. It says, yes, indeed , thats it says, yes, indeed, thats a according to an exclusive poll conducted for the observer. It conducted for the observer. It suggests that 34 of conservative voters are current intending to vote for other parties. So intending to vote for other parties. So labour and lib dems, in other words. And the context in other words. And the context is the competition and indeed the contradictory demands from warring tory factions ahead of the tory Party Conference in manchester. So you know, this of course reflects what a lot of people are already saying, but it makes for a very dramatic headlines, not least because general elections are often the expression of general rejections. And theres plenty of evidence that people are sick of evidence that people are sick of the conservatives. But the big question is, are they so sick that they are prepared to vote Labour Government in effectively . And thats the real effectively . And thats the real challenge for keir starmer and i think thats whats going to make the whether they all the third of them switch to one way of voting labour for instance, or whether they just fragment utterly , which again might not utterly, which again might not give anyone a proper decisive lead. Yes, i think thats why its going to make the conservative conference more exciting than ever , because, exciting than ever, because, i mean, ive heard some cheeky people calling the Prime Minister rishi soon out because so many of his loyal lieutenants are positioning themselves to take over effectively this is what weve got real competition from within his own camp. I dont understand. I dont understand. I dont i mean , i know its i dont i mean, i know its a competitive business, but if its true that Suella Braverman is sort of chasing the top job, you know, with her, with her sort of challenges, that shes there in the papers this morning. And theres lots of talk about penny mordaunt. Shes running westminster running around westminster trying garner support and all trying to garner support and all the rest of it. Its like one of those images of a snake eating itself, isnt it . Theyre just itself, isnt it . Theyre just going theyre just forcing going to theyre just forcing themselves out power. Going to theyre just forcing the well, es out power. Going to theyre just forcing the well, i; out power. Going to theyre just forcing the well, i think power. Going to theyre just forcing the well, i think especially with well, i think especially with rishi, he rishi, sunak is concerned he never won a leadership election rishi, sunak is concerned he never vas a leadership election rishi, sunak is concerned he never vas heleadership election rishi, sunak is concerned he never vas he nevership election rishi, sunak is concerned he never vas he never wentelection rishi, sunak is concerned he never vas he never went to tion rishi, sunak is concerned he never vas he never went to thei insofar as he never went to the voters. They never went to the tory members. Hes always had a lot difficulty stamping his tory members. Hes always had a lot authorityy stamping his tory members. Hes always had a lot authority ontamping his tory members. Hes always had a lot authority on thejing his tory members. Hes always had a lot authority on the party, s own authority on the party, which the reasons why own authority on the party, whic had the reasons why own authority on the party, whic had to the reasons why own authority on the party, whic had to be the reasons why own authority on the party, whic had to be quite easons why own authority on the party, whic had to be quite cautioushy own authority on the party, whic had to be quite cautious on hes had to be quite cautious on various other things. And i think fascinating as think its so fascinating as well. Terms where think its so fascinating as well. Going terms where think its so fascinating as well. Going to rms where think its so fascinating as well. Going to be; where think its so fascinating as well. Going to be at where think its so fascinating as well. Going to be at wterms of were going to be at in terms of the the next election, the voters at the next election, because so clear is that because whats so clear is that whilst lot people whilst a lot of people are running tory running away from the tory party, like they party, they feel like they havent through on that havent followed through on that mandate you mandate they got in 2019. You know, theyve had one scandal after another theyre fed up after another and theyre fed up with at the time with them. But at the same time its people are its not obvious that people are rushing keir starmer. Rushing towards keir starmer. I think to watch at think the big group to watch at the be people the next election will be people who to not voting who go back to not voting because that has the group because that has been the group thats decisive in thats been so decisive in recent hadnt recent years. People who hadnt voted time or voted for a very long time or never many cases they never voted in many cases they voted, began voting for ukip voted, began voting for ukip voted for brexit at the eu referendum, voted for the brexit party. And then that kind of became a gateway to voting tory for many people who historically have given their from working class in the class communities, often in the north and the midlands wouldnt have that way. I think have voted that way. I think a lot are to lot of those people are going to go voting, frankly. Lot of those people are going to go well, voting, frankly. Lot of those people are going to go well, ill voting, frankly. Lot of those people are going to go well, ill tellyting, frankly. Lot of those people are going to go well, ill tell you , frankly. Lot of those people are going to go well, ill tell you what, ly. Lot of those people are going to go well, ill tell you what, it. Well, ill tell you what, it could for the could be a bumpy year for the lib lot of lib dems because a lot of people, if they if they if they dont want to vote, mean , i dont want to vote, i mean, i know theyre not theyre not that. That well aligned. But, know, if they but but, you know, if they dont cant dont want if they cant bring themselves theyre themselves to vote, if theyre tories bring themselves tories cant bring themselves to vote labour or maybe they vote for labour or maybe they vote for labour or maybe they vote for labour or maybe they vote for lib dem, i mean its all socialist party, its all so volatile at the moment. I thats one thing that i think thats one thing that makes hard. Makes it very hard. Yes, i think theres the old bases this suggests that bases of this poll suggests that the voters in the tories have lost voters in crucial areas. Southern heartlands and crucial areas. Red southern heartlands and crucial areas. Red wall1ern heartlands and crucial areas. Red wall seats eartlands and crucial areas. Red wall seats eaithelds and the red wall seats in the midlands. Would contend midlands. But i would contend that its all up for grabs still because the key issue will remain economics. And theres a remain economics. And theres a lot of sceptical voters who still dont labour with still dont trust labour with budget, with figures. And so budget, with figures. And so its going to be incredibly tough. But i would say that tough. But i would say that a tory government, however divided it looks at the moment, still has a chance to get jeremy hunt, hasnt he has hinted that they wont call an election until he hes confident or he feels he has already got inflation down to 3 or below. To 3 or below. And if he does manage that, thats quite an achievement, isnt it . And it would be something which people would presumably begin to feel of the pinch. Begin to feel less of the pinch. And on. Maybe that will make and so on. Maybe that will make people look again the people look again at the conservatives. A conservatives. But it is such a narrow path to victory at this point. Would be stunning point. Just it would be stunning if to pull it if they managed to even pull it off. At the same you off. But at the same time, you are situation where this is are in a situation where this is not like 1997. This is not the labour party riding high. No no, its not clear sense of , well, its not clear sense of, well, enthusiasm. It just isnt there enthusiasm. It just isnt there in relation. Ill tell you who may have a narrow path to victory. Narrow path to victory. According to the mail on sunday, Meghan Markle or meghan wales or whatever i meant to call her now could be the next senator for california for yes. So the headline has veteran us politicians death open door to senator meghan. The answer is almost certainly no. But her pr almost certainly no. But her pr team have been getting to work trying to suggest that after the death of dianne feinstein, who was 90, she was the longest serving. Legendary, serving. She was a legendary, wasnt a real wasnt she . Indeed, like a real sort of trailblazer as people would know, longest would say, you know, longest serving senator, long serving female senator, long time politician. And theres time politician. And theres obviously this question because now the governor of california essentially has to select someone the role until someone to fill the role until the next election. And meghans pr people seemingly have been quite busy suggesting that maybe she be in the frame. Its she would be in the frame. Its no secret that she has political ambitions. This is something thats a lot. Thats been talked about a lot. People even talk about potentially a president ial bid. Potentially a president ial bid. Now, people will, course, now, people will, of course, say, know celebrity say, you know, a celebrity suddenly launching themselves into political when into political stage. When does that ever happened . But well, in california. In but well, in california. In california, yeah, a lot doesnt it . Well, thats the other thing. The kind of celebrity ification of been on of politics has been going on for not just for quite a long time, not just in it doesnt mean theyre it doesnt mean theyre bad politicians mean, politicians, as i mean, schwarzenegger a very schwarzenegger was a very reliable and well thought of governor as , of governor for a long time as, of course, reagan. Course, was ronald reagan. And respects, i feel and in some respects, i feel like so many politicians are so vapid anyway. Does it make that much difference days . Vapid anyway. Does it make that mu but ifference days . Vapid anyway. Does it make that mu but whats e days . Vapid anyway. Does it make that mu but whats e dayis, you but whats misleading is, you know , her pr suggesting shes know, her pr suggesting shes bandied in hollywood. Bandied about in hollywood. Shes never been part of that hollywood bubble. Thats the hollywood bubble. Thats the reality. Shes never been anywhere near hollywood. Thats her great you know , a cause for. Her great you know, a cause for. But shes shes a very big name there. Shes a good speaker. She is already, you know, espoused certain causes. Is she, though , i really is she, though, i really cannot take this story seriously at all . I dont know. She has no constituency at all as far as i can see. On the contrary , she can see. On the contrary, she managed to make herself very unpopular , including in america unpopular, including in america , where a lot of Americans Still have an awful lot of respect for the British Royal family. And ill tell you , you know, and ill tell you, you know, even trump has shown even donald trump has shown immense for the late immense respect for the late queen. You know, she clearly made her majestys last few years a misery, not least of all, by coming up with unfounded accusations about racism. And accusations about racism. And im sorry to say, but i get the feeling that meghans only supporter is prince harry, but hes not even allowed a vote. Hes not even allowed a vote. Well, no, thats true. Thats no, i dont know. Well , theres nothing wrong well, theres nothing wrong with having aspirations. Thats with having aspirations. Thats not knock anyone for having aspirations. Ill you i aspirations. Ill tell you who i love. Were big on both of love. Were big on both sides of the have loved them the atlantic and have loved them for that you to do. Yes. They get my vote. Yes. They get my vote. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Absolute brilliant. Absolute brilliant. Anyway, in the states, in las vegas, theres this new incredible venue, 2. 4 billion. Its cost. Anyway. Its opened. Its cost. Anyway. Its opened. And you two were sort of behind it all. Its a huge sphere of which it can project things on the inside and outside, apparently. Wow. Yeah. Incredible wow. Yeah. Incredible mountains. Mountains. This is a shot of the inside of it. Of it. So this is. Yeah. So this is. Yeah. So this is. Yeah. So its like an imax screen almost. Yeah. You see sort of all around deserts and mountain in the background. Its quite dramatic and its a great as a spectacle and good for the cheap seats, i imagine, because you think, well, you cant you . Cant miss it, can you . Two playing so are you two playing a concert there . And it wouldnt. And it wouldnt. Yeah, theyve theyve done it havent played theyve already played a concert i think weve got a shot but i think weve got a shot of edge. I do wonder if it of the edge. I do wonder if it pushes second of the edge. I do wonder if it pushethough second of the edge. I do wonder if it pushethough havingecond of the edge. I do wonder if it pushethough having this d place though by having this visual distraction , if i may put visual distraction, if i may put it that way. My goodness. It that way. Well, odness. It that way. Well, odnesthe band looks well, yeah, the band looks very down there, but ill very small down there, but ill tell you what, if the music and the visuals work hand in hand , the visuals work hand in hand, then its just makes it a different experience, doesnt it . Funnily enough, i bumped into them in a hotel in morocco. Did you . You too. Did you . You too. I saw. Yeah, i saw this character actor at the breakfast table outdoors, wearing a beanie hat under extreme heat. Oh, thatd be the edge, then. Very polite. I was very polite. I was very polite. I was very polite. I called him up and say anything. I did because i was cheeky. I did because i was cheeky. Dont you . Dont you . Dont you . But i was for a moment, dont you . I you . I called him mr edge. I called him mr edge. Yeah. Yeah. Mr edge. Mr edge. Very formal. And bono turned up up talking about up and we ended up talking about northern up and we ended up talking about norohrn up and we ended up talking about noroh ,| up and we ended up talking about noroh , lord. Oh, lord. Oh, lord. Good lord, he said, we got there in the end. Got them all to sit around we got them all to sit around a and talk. A table and talk. But i think thats lovely. But i think thats lovely. If you ever bump into if you ever do bump into quite somebody , a quite by accident, somebody, a celebrity or somebody you know, they know they dont know you, but you whoa. You really know them. I think youve got to grab them. I think youve got to grab the bull by the horns say the bull by the horns and Say Something politely. Some something politely. But some celebrities well to that. Others will. Others dont. Dont. Well, if they dont, then. Theni dont. Well, if they dont, then. Then i never understood that. Then i never understood that. Because whats the point of wanting to famous if you wanting to be famous if you dont want love from your constituency . Yeah yeah. Ill tell you what. Do you remember Cara Lawrence . Who . You remember Cara Lawrence . Who . Shes been on the show a couple of times. She works for my. I know. Is it mind . Oh, she. She know. Is it mind . Oh, she. She has. Shes got down shes got has. Shes got down shes got a mental disability and she works with a chair. Is it mind. Oh my minds gone blank now. But she works for the charity that helps people with learning disabilities and learning difficulty. Rs and she does a difficulty. Rs and she does a podcast called the pink sparkle podcast, which ive been on. Its brilliant, but shes had the edge on that because hes her cousin. Wow. What a weird small world. Yes, it is , isnt it . Yes, it is, isnt it . Yes, it is, isnt it . So she may well be watching this morning. You never know. This morning. You never know. Im winning if you are so there you go. Weird small world. Very importantly to me, tom. Yeah, because i think the whole avocado on toast thing is ridiculous and very posh. Im looking fonnard to mine when i get home. You say . But now, apparently, the observers saying its all being ditched for. For peas. Yeah. The new kind of yeah. This is the new kind of brunch substance on brunch smashed substance on toast of choice. It seems like. I dont know if its because its cheaper or whether or not its cheaper or whether or not its something people are its something which people are just one trends that just bored of. One trends that are the other. But are going with the other. But yes, on toast. Are going with the other. But yes, hashtag on toast. Are going with the other. But yes, hashtag has on toast. Are going with the other. But yes, hashtag has been n toast. Are going with the other. But yes, hashtag has been doing t. Are going with the other. But yes, hashtag has been doing the the hashtag has been doing the rounds on social rounds on tiktok, on social media. Become one the media. Its become one of the kind brunch spots, kind of hip brunch spots, something which is increasingly on. Im not sure how on the menu. Im not sure how i feel about it, but then there wasnt a big fan of the avocado. I love peas, not on toast. Dont know. I dont know. I dont know. Theyre theyre but if theyre if theyre fresh because fresh, raw fresh and raw because fresh, raw peas, you ever you try peas, if you ever you try keeping them on the toast, then if theyre fresh, raw, are you going to keep. You still going to keep. Well, you still have smash them. Have to smash smash them. But but thing is , if you ever but be the thing is, if you ever we to grow own veg and peas. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Straight out the pod. Unbelievable well, im a city girl. Well, im a city girl. Mushy peas on toast. Could be good. Oh, now that id definitely go for with a splash of gravy on. Yeah. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Youve never had mushy peas have you. No, i dont like. I still cant even bring myself to try them. But i love peas. I do love them. But i love peas. I do love garden peas. Smashing peas. Smashing peas. What would you like on black pepper . Uh , i dont know. Uh, i dont know. Uh, i dont know. I like. Im not too fond of bread in general. Oh, give just french. What about are you saying you never. Neven you never get a baguette every morning . No , i think thats an no, i think thats an overrated thing. Uh, its mainly overrated thing. Uh, its mainly white bread. Its though its got zero nutritional value. Yes, but its crispy and gorgeous. If i am to have bread, id rather have something that brings something to the party. Like bleu. Like bleu. Like bleu. Are you saying youve never cracked open that tin of baked beans . Beans . I beans . I have a slice of hovis white. I have a cup of tea , baked i have a cup of tea, baked bread, i think bread is one of the best things in the world and its one of the best things about going to france is having properly baked baguettes properly baked fresh baguettes in. In the morning. Lovely with nice bit of brie. I think it became it was celebrated by unesco as a part of, you know , french heritage. Of, you know, french heritage. Yeah oh yeah. Right oh yeah. Right whats the first thing we learn when school is about boulangerie . Yes, thats most important thing for english people to know. We see tomatoes on toast is a big thing, especially in spain. Big thing, especially in spain. Tostada, condiment and bruschetta. Oh, see, bruschetta. Oh, see, bruschetta. Oh, see, bruschetta. Thats beautiful. See, listen to me. Im im thats beautiful. See, listen to me. Im im almost bilingual. Now. Whenever im in spain, its what i always go. I always have. I always have. I always have. I think it must be something about breakfast as about Breakfast Television as well. When youve air well. When youve been on air for time, from early in for a long time, from early in the think for a long time, from early in the is think for a long time, from early in the is food think for a long time, from early in the is food and think for a long time, from early in the is food and sleep think for a long time, from early in the is food and sleep and1k sleep. Its been very good to see you both. Yeah. After you soon. Well be after you soon. Well be after you soon. Wow. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Lets look at the lets have a look at the weather you. Weather for you. Hello. Im marco petagna. Heres your latest weather update the met office. Update from the met office. Well a mixed of weather well see a mixed bag of weather across the uk over the next few days. Of seeing days. Most of us seeing some rain times. The sun rain at times. But when the sun pps rain at times. But when the sun pops through, should pops through, it should feel fairly time of fairly warm for the time of yean fairly warm for the time of year. Weve got a bit a three year. Weve got a bit of a three way split weather wise across the day today. The uk through the day today. A slow moving band of rain affecting parts of affecting wales, parts of Northern England, the north midlands, working midlands, even at times working into of into the far south west of england of rain england there some of that rain heavy while, tending heavy for a while, but tending to go the to ease as we go into the afternoon. Whereas towards the south east its a brighter picture, fine here and picture, mostly fine here and brighter showers brighter with 1 or 2 showers towards and northwest towards the north and northwest. But in sunshine towards. But in the sunshine towards the south east becoming quite warm. Temperatures here peaking at 23 or celsius amid 70s in at 23 or 24 celsius amid 70s in fahrenheit and even towards the north 18 degrees. Its north at 17 or 18 degrees. Its pretty for the time year pretty warm for the time of year as we head through the evening and overnight, that band of rain continues to affect some central and overnight, that band of rain cont southern affect some central and overnight, that band of rain cont southern parts some central and overnight, that band of rain contsouthern parts ofne central and overnight, that band of rain contsouthern parts ofne ukral and southern parts of the uk fairly i fairly patchy rain here and i think far south east should think the far south east should again stay fine with clear again stay fine with some clear spells, spells spells, with clearer spells towards north and northwest towards the north and northwest and once again and a few showers once again toward the far northwest of the uk warm night in the south at uk. A warm night in the south at 15 or 16 degrees, a little bit fresher towards the north, but near a 11 celsius. As for near a 10 to 11 celsius. As for monday , well, once again, monday, well, once again, outbreaks affect some outbreaks of rain affect some central parts of central and southern parts of the anything, tending the uk. If anything, tending to pp the uk. If anything, tending to p0p dby the uk. If anything, tending to pop day in some pop up through the day in some parts. So some heavy bursts developing across parts of wales, and locally wales, the midlands and locally down southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england as southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england as we southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england as we go southwest wales, the midlands and locally do england as we go throughzst of england as we go through monday towards southeast , a monday towards the southeast, a brighter a few brighter picture with a few showers and brighter with showers and brighter with showers far too. Showers towards the far too. North again fairly warm in north but again fairly warm in the sunshine the the sunshine towards the south east well, do stay with us. Weve got lots coming up from particularly from the conservative Party Conference where well be all day and no doubt for the next four days. Yeah, we will. Yeah, we will. Well, dishy rishi turns into rishi sunak out. Yeah. Apparently thats his yeah. Apparently thats his nickname. Is yeah. Apparently thats his nickname. Is that. I mean, that would be a disaster for the trying to stay in government , trying to stay in government, wouldnt it . But maybe he can calm the its 9 00. Its sunday, the 1st of october. These are the stories weve been covering on breakfast. This morning and the conservative Party Conference is kicking off in manchester today, first gathering since rishi sunak became pm. And of course, were there throughout the next four days. A ban on Single Use Plastics comes into force in england today. Plastic plates, trays, cutlery , bowls and certain cups cutlery, bowls and certain cups and containers will be banned , and containers will be banned, but not disposable vapes or supermarket ready meals. British troops will be deployed in ukraine for the first time, according to the defence secretary. While our defence secretary. While our navy may be moved into the black sea and the winds of framework replacement for the Northern Ireland protocol comes into force today, the deal will reduce ease. It will ease controls on goods entering from the mainland, but many unionists still see it as an irish sea border forecast. Heading your way very shortly with marco. With marco. Hello. Good morning. Weve got a mixed bag of weather in store across the uk through the day today. Therell be some rain in sunshine day today. Therell be some rain in but sunshine day today. Therell be some rain in but ill shine day today. Therell be some rain in but ill have all the elsewhere, but ill have all the details later on. Well, its lovely to be with you. Im anne well, its lovely to be with you. Im anne diamond. Im stephen dixon. This is breakfast on. Breakfast on. Gb news. Just if youre panicking from that headune youre panicking from that headline about ukraine, by the way , which you could easily way, which you could easily panic at, you could. Were not panic at, you could. Were not putting boots on the ground and to fight the suggestion is or the claim is writing in. I think the claim is writing in. I think the telegraph. Its the telegraph that grant shapps, the defence secretary, is going to want to move our troops who are already in the area to train to train ukrainian soldiers in in ukraine, which is which is a move because up until now we have been training ukrainian soldiers, both here in britain and in poland for instance, and elsewhere along the border. But we have made the very moot point of not taking them into ukraine. An and it would appear that after grant shapps went out to ukraine to see president zelenskyy, he is now promised that he will actually move our troops into ukraine to train , which is a move. And its train, which is a move. And its you just wonder why i think its worrying. It. I dont worrying. It. I dont like it. It. I dont like it. No, i dont like it because it will be misinterpreted. Possibly deliberately misinterpreted by moscow. But but it also makes them a target, puts them in the line of fire. So to which fire. Soto which is a fire. So to which is a worry. Soto which is a worry. Soto which is a worry. The last thing we want to do is lose anybody. But anyway, if is lose anybody. But anyway, if youve got a view on that, let us know and well well no doubt get clarification. During get some clarification. During conservative conference, conservative Party Conference, heartthrobs talking heartthrobs have been talking about this morning as well. Did about this morning as well. Did you apparently theyre going out of fashion . Well, thats what some columnists seem to think, that the age of the heartthrob is over. Oven are they columnists who are they old columnists who just their of just have lost their of youngsters still have posters on their bedroom walls with the heartthrob there . Well, they certainly used to, including paul from hartlepool. Morning, paul from hartlepool. Morning, paul, paul from hartlepool. Morning, paul , whos paul from hartlepool. Morning, paul, whos letting us paul from hartlepool. Morning, paul , whos letting us know paul, whos letting us know today that debbie harry blondie was his heartthrob when he was in his mid teens. Was his heartthrob when he was in his mid teens. And he did in his mid teens. And he did a drawing of it in 1980 that he still has on his wall. Oh, thats very good. Oh, thats very good. That is good. Oh, youre a talented artist. You are talented artist. You are talented. Yeah. That was debbie talented. Yeah. That was debbie harry. Yeah very good. It looks like an intimate portrait as well, doesnt it . Its nicer than an ordinary poster. Its very good, isnt it . Yeah, i heard an interview with debbie harry recently, she debbie harry recently, and she said out said when they were starting out and did what she. She did and she did what she. She did one gig and her dress was made entirely of razor blades. Oh, crumbs. Yes. I think i remember that dress. Dress. I mean, can you imagine . I mean, can you imagine . I mean, can you imagine . Crackers . Crackers . Hinckley. Nice nice things you do things you do . Yeah. Dear me. You do things you do . Yeah. Dear me. Anyway, look yeah. Dear me. Anyway, look on to more serious matters for you this morning. Conservative Party Conference kicks off today with rishi sunak at the helm for the first time. And what, a year or under a year . Its been for the Prime Minister from trying to stop the boats delaying net zero. Hes boats to delaying net zero. Hes been busy trying. Been busy trying. Yeah, but still trailing in the polls. So if you read some of them , they are narrowing. Of them, they are narrowing. Nevertheless facing pressure from his party, particularly, of course, this week over issues like hs2 and the ongoing issue of immigration. Interesting. The hs2 thing, given that the conference is going on in manchester at the moment, will he make this conference the opportunity to turn around his premiership and in what direction . Yeah, lets talk to our colleague Camilla Tominey. Is coming at 930. Her show is coming up at 930. Of live from conference of course, live from conference andits of course, live from conference and its going to be a tricky few days, isnt it, for the pm and the cabinet. I think make or break is the phrase steve. I mean, at the end of the day, hes got to deliver a pretty barnstorming speech on wednesday to carry the tories through. I think as youve just referenced they referenced there, they will be emboldened fairly emboldened by some fairly positive polling in places. Positive polling in all places. The observer would you believe so opinion which would usually the observer would you believe so opini0|with ch would usually the observer would you believe so opini0|with perhapsi usually the observer would you believe so opini0|with perhaps aisually the observer would you believe so opini0|with perhaps a bitilly associate with perhaps a bit more left leaning in terms of pollsters, has come out with this poll suggest the this poll to suggest that the gap labour and the gap between labour and the conservatives narrowed to conservatives has narrowed to just points. Now that is just ten points. Now that is significant because over the summer it was more than 20. Why is that . Because the is that . Because of the clampdown we think on net zero and idea that some of those and the idea that some of those tories that felt completely disaffected following the fall, not Boris Johnson but not just of Boris Johnson but also liz truss , they sort of also liz truss, they sort of stayed at home during the locals. Theyre not that keen on rishi they rishi sunak at least they werent. Do they now look werent. But do they now look upon the pm a little bit more favourably now that hes performed climb performed this climate climb down . So well be looking at that. Ive got some great guests on today, ive on the show today, guys. Ive got up now got michael gove coming up now dont forget, he was initially quite a net zero zealot and hes had to climb down himself because he was the one who was only very recently saying, no, were going delay the ban were not going to delay the ban on diesels and petrol. So well be hes the be speaking to him. Hes the levelling he of levelling up secretary he of course, going to have to ask course, im going to have to ask him about hs2. In him about hs2. Were in manchester. And this leg of the rail going come rail project isnt going to come to manchester. Seems , as tax to manchester. It seems, as tax cuts about tax is cuts and talking about tax is also a main focus of attention here. Im going to be speaking to patel, her conservative to priti patel, her conservative Democratic Organisation has been pushing for tax cuts. People like her and liz truss have signed this letter saying we will not support any budget that puts taxes up. So ill be intrigued to ask her a bit more about that and also go to gove and look, is this feasible and say, look, is this feasible because chancellor keeps because the chancellor keeps on saying going cut saying theyre not going to cut taxes sunak wants taxes, but if rishi sunak wants to ever more popular in the to be ever more popular in the polls his own voters, polls with his own voters, he might in that direction. And there are lots of sort of ministers and ex ministers and former ministers having their say about various topics, trying to make headlines , i guess for to make headlines, i guess for the first day. How is rishi sunak going to cope with these various vultures which seem to be circling around his job now . Thats right. And not so much a nest of singing birds as a nest of vipers. The conservative party. Vipers. The conservative party. Weve got a little bit of freelancing going on today. Look, theyve all set up by look, theyve all been set up by number interviews. Number 10. These interviews. Weve Kemi Badenoch talking weve got Kemi Badenoch talking about the fact that we should be leaving interestingly, leaving the echr. Interestingly, michael echoes that michael gove echoes that a little bit in his interview with the sun on sunday. He says, you little bit in his interview with the slleaving nday. He says, you little bit in his interview with the slleaving ndajechrsays, you little bit in his interview with the slleaving ndajechr should u little bit in his interview with the slleaving ndajechr should be know, leaving the echr should be on. Going probe on the table. Im going to probe that and ask that that a bit further and ask that also of priti patel. As a former home id to know home secretary, id like to know what she makes of Suella Bravermans in week bravermans comments in the week bravermans back in the newspapers as well, talking about people opposed about the people who are opposed to policies like to her immigration policies like Sir Elton John being liberal elitists and need to keep their noses out. Weve also from noses out. Weve also heard from grant as you two have grant shapps as you two have just describing , talking just been describing, talking about this idea of about stepping up this idea of british troops being slightly more operational in ukraine. Hes been speaking about that. So, look, theres a lot going on. And i think rishi sunaks main priority will be to try and keep these tories that are going out a limb on tax and have out on a limb on tax and have been quite judgemental on some whatsapp his whatsapp groups about his leadership. Of leadership. One of his colleagues describing him as apparently having the charisma of door according to leaked of a door according to leaked messages. Not the best way to messages. Not the best way to start conference is it . Is it that i mean, no. Why is it that i mean, you get it in all parties, but i mean particularly in the conservatives at the moment that they seem determined to they almost seem determined to eat themselves before the next election. Ive completely lost election. Ive completely lost sound there, steve. And so im afraid i cant hear what youre asking me. But if me to wax lyrical if you want me to wax lyrical further im further about the pm, then im more to. More than happy to. Yes, please please do. Yes, please do. Please do. Yes, please do. Please do. And she probably cant hear me. She cant hear as well. Anyway because it was a very, very fine question. Camilla, if you watch back , fine you watch this back, fine question. Question. Jolly good. Jolly good. But this this is what i dont understand. And actually, i keep saying Jacob Rees Mogg , who is saying Jacob Rees Mogg, who is obviously on this channel, who ive never met in the flesh, id like to sit down with him at some point and say, why . Because hes the one who is very much backing boris after hed gone and this sort thing. And all this sort of thing. It if causes dissent and is if it causes dissent and is likely make the party lose likely to make the party lose the next election, do they the next election, why do they pursue more pursue it . Is that more important to pursue that rather than to try pursue victory . They re victory . Theyre looking at because theyre looking at the . Are the long term . And are they maybe even be maybe they may even be considering going to considering what its going to be like to actually be out of office in the long term. Thats when they carve their new when they can carve their new careers. Looking fonnard to the election after , i suppose. Election after, i suppose. I mean, if youre in politics, you are usually in it for the long game, arent you . I mean, isnt it interesting of all the years, mean, ive of all the years, i mean, ive been talking and youve been talking politics and youve been talking politics and youve been doing longer that you been doing it longer that you you be you wouldnt want to be a politician for all the tea in china. Its a messy game. Yeah, its messy. And also, dont you think . I mean , youre dont you think . I mean, youre even if your heart is totally in it and you completely believe in what every 4 or 5 what youre doing every 4 or 5 years, have to out and years, you have to go out and knock on peoples doors and beg for vote again and again. Knock on peoples doors and beg fo doesnt ote again and again. Knock on peoples doors and beg fo doesnt matterin and again. Knock on peoples doors and beg fo doesnt matter in animportant knock on peoples doors and beg fo d evert matter in animportant knock on peoples doors and beg fo d ever haveter in animportant knock on peoples doors and beg fo d ever have been animportant knock on peoples doors and beg fo d ever have been in important knock on peoples doors and beg fo d ever have been in impwworld you ever have been in the world of politics. I mean, i suppose thats probably a good thing. But after your period in government for a while, then you have to go out and just be an ordinary bloke again, you know, on a top of a soapbox trying to garner support. But in order to keep job, not many of us do keep your job, not many of us do that, i suppose. No, no. No, no. No, no. Certainly not a job for life, is it . I enjoy talking about politics, but wouldnt want to politics, but i wouldnt want to do it. No, i mean, can does it seem a long time to you that seem a long time ago to you that bons seem a long time ago to you that boris Prime Minister . Seems ages ago. Yes, it does. Seems ages ago. Yes, it does. Seems ages ago. It does not that long ago at all. You cant you cant sort of imagine it in a weird way. No and i wonder how he is viewing it as well, whether he is looking upon it as a long term thing. I dont know. I dont know. I dont know. I dont know whether he has actually said no. Thats the end of political. Of my political. Dont know if you i dont know if hes you know, him well know, i, i dont know him well enough whether he would enough to know whether he would be the sort of person whos chomping get back be the sort of person whos ch or ping get back be the sort of person whos ch or whether get back be the sort of person whos ch or whether hes get back be the sort of person whos ch or whether hes sat get back be the sort of person whos ch or whether hes sat backback be the sort of person whos ch or whether hes sat back some in or whether hes sat back some where laughing his socks off because its not him. I dont know. You look at tony blair, he cant give it up, can he cant give it up. Can he . No, he cant give it up. Interesting. Can he . No, he cant give it up. Irsaw sting. Can he . No, he cant give it up. Irsaw theresa may about i saw theresa may about a year when with the hoo year ago when with all the hoo ha kicking off, said, ha was kicking off, and i said, well, theresa. Bet well, oh, hi, theresa. I bet youre in there youre glad youre not in there now. Now. Didnt respond. No way. Didnt respond. No way. Didnt respond. She nodded and smiled at me. But she wouldnt give me an answer. A nswer. Answer. I think shes still playing her long game. Really interesting. You have really interesting. You have to a special breed to be a to be a special breed to be a politician anyway , at 9 11, politician anyway, at 9 11, lets just bring you up to date with what else is happening. And as weve already mentioned, actually its reported that actually its been reported that british troops be sent to british troops could be sent to ukraine for First Ukraine in for the First Time Since invasion began. This since the invasion began. This is the sunday telegraph and is in the sunday telegraph and the defence secretary has said there are plans to move a British Training program into ukraine and it follows grant shapps visit to the country last week. Week. A fall in ofgems Energy Price Cap has come into effect amid concerns that households could still end up paying around 13 more than they did last winter , more than they did last winter, the regulator announced in august that the cap on a unit of gas and electricity would reduce the average bill to just under two grand for the next three months. Some analysts, though, predict the cap will rise again by around 3. 5 in january because of increases in wholesale Energy Prices and over in the states, the government there has avoided federal shutdown after the house of representatives and the Senate Approved a temporary funding bill. It drops aid to ukraine, which is going to be an issue. How that gets resolved, i dont know. A federal Disaster Assistance, though, has been increased by 16 so increased by 16 billion. So whether they just dip out of that fund, i dont know. And this is to going last until november the 17th, from which point they go through all point they go through it all over again. Over again. Sometimes its nice to feel that, although, you know, we think our politics is completely crazy. You only have to look over the pond, dont you . Sometimes you see something crazier going on. Yes. Yes. Never had it so good or weve never had it so good or something that. Something like that. Yeah. Yeah. Now, from today , businesses now, from today, businesses in england banned from selling using single use plastic. So lets cut the polystyrene cups, food containers , all part of the food containers, all part of the governments efforts to protect the environment. But of course, it does pose some problems for Business Owners. Our reporter ray addison went to woodstock in oxfordshire to find out how two very different businesses are dealing with the change. Dirty streets and polluted watennays. Polluted watennays. Thats the legacy of Single Use Plastics. However from today, the government is forcing most Business Owners to go green or face tough fines at the more than 300 year old Blenheim Palace in woodstock. Theyre replacing half a million single use coffee cups with 17,000 that can be washed and returned , can be washed and returned, saving 35 tonnes of co2. David saving 35 tonnes of co2. David green is head of innovation. Green is head of innovation. When we serve over 400,000 hot drinks at blenheim and many of those cups, even though theyre compostable, can only be composted up to about 5. With food waste. So actually food waste. So actually eradicating single use cups really does fit into our overall strategy of becoming Carbon Neutral by 2027. The Company Behind blenheims high tech coffee cup revolution is re universe, which offers a range of reusable food and drink containers. Founder tony mcguirk explains how it works. This cup has some really neat technology in it, so it has a qr code on the side to give it an identity to you as a consumer. And it has underneath an rfid chip enabled in the cup itself so that we know where the cup is and what its doing. When it and what its doing. When it gets returned, youll go into a coffee shop, youll buy your coffee, as you normally would do, a deposit on do, and youll pay a deposit on that cup. So rather than heres a cup , throw it away, you a paper cup, throw it away, you now have a cup that is reused and re washable and youve invested £2 in it. For instance. So if you want your £2 back, youll make sure it comes back and gets washed and reused then the receipt. But revolutions are expensive i just a few minutes walk away from Blenheim Palace is smarts fish and chip shop owner Ricardo Camara says meeting the new regulations is costing him hundreds plastic bags. Hundreds plastic bags. Cups and leeds boxes. Bin cups and leeds boxes. Bin liners , other bits and bobs. Im liners, other bits and bobs. Im going to lose easily. £600 worth going to lose easily. £600 worth of items. Then i decide to take this one over. I take another risk. Now this thing comes along again. So im betting on the chips. Yes, please. Please. Ricardo believes he has around six months to see if he can stay profitable and in the meantime, his increased overheads will have to be passed on to his customers. I kind of take from my own pocket, you know . So whatever i pocket, you know . So whatever i bnng pocket, you know . So whatever i bring it in, i have to increase in the price. The government says 95 of the public support. Its the single use plastic ban. But at single use plastic ban. But at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living, its impact could help the environment. But damage the high street. Ray addison gb news woodstock. Woodstock. Rm elaine says morning, elaine. Why dont you get a £0. 10 back on a plastic bottle when you take it back . Then everyone would go around picking up plastic bottles to get bit of plastic bottles to get a bit of money like what did money back, like what they did with aluminium cans. And the with aluminium cans. And in the old course we took old days, of course we took glass bottles back to the shop for ten. P true. Chris and mark p yeah, true. Chris and mark says use plastic says single use plastic isnt the people disposing the problem. People disposing of cups throwing in a hedge cups by throwing them in a hedge as they do out of cars onto my rural lane. Are the problem. Rural lane. Are the problem. Actually, i dont think youre right because even when you even when you recycle all this stuff, what theyve discovered is the recycle it by shipping it somewhere else, it all just ends and then they dump it at the other end. Yes, they do. Yes, they do. So its actually weve got to weve got to stop it at source. So i would disagree with you on that like that one. But litterers like that one. But litterers like that a disgusting anyway. That one. But litterers like tha yeah,r disgusting anyway. That one. But litterers like tha yeah, absolutely, anyway. That one. But litterers like tha yeah, absolutely, tony ay. That one. But litterers like tha yeah, absolutely, tony says yeah, absolutely, tony says in Mansfield District Council if you put lightweight plastics like carrier bags, for instance in your recycle bin, they refuse to empty your bin. Why . Why . Different in different its different in different places, isnt it . But it is manic that it doesnt seem to be any thinking this. Any joined up thinking on this. Crackers , its absolutely crackers, which i may say a lot over the coming 12 hours or so coming up, a tree surgeon will be in the studio to talk about giving a tree a new life. This is gb news. Yesterday we were talking about bees and you remember ella whelan husband. Yeah well, were going to meet him now because people, visitors and locals have been to told stop visiting, visiting the site of the former sycamore gap tree in northumberland. Of course. You know what we of course. You know what we mean, dont you . That wonderful tree, hadrians wall. Mean, dont you . That wonderful tree, hadrians wall. Somebody tree, hadrians wall. Somebody went along and literally just cut it down in the most awful act of vandalism that has United People all. But we still dont know why and we still dont know who did it. But the big question is , is can that tree ever live is, is can that tree ever live again . And if so, how now . Well, were joined in the studio by tree surgeon in llewellyn beard. Morning , beardy ian. Morning, beardy ian. Morning, beardy ian. Yes, thats right. The beard. Yes, thats right. The beard. I was talking about you, but yeah, so by business you are a tree surgeon. So you know, this sort of stuff. What im amazed at is that somebody took one of these enormous great, what do you call them, circular , you call them, circular, chainsaw, chainsaws. Thats it. To that tree. And cut it. What looks like youll youll be able to give us the verdict. But they seem to cut a really very neat cut. And then the tree came down. So given that what youve got is a stump with a very neat cut along the top and what can then happen to that tree . Well , theres the potential well, theres the potential and some people have already raised this , that the stump raised this, that the stump could regenerate. So although although the upper part of the tree has has been cut down and will now die away , nothing will will now die away, nothing will come up through that stump. But the stump still is. But the stump still is. Its root system is still intact. Its root system is still intact. It will probably still intact. It will probably still have some dormant buds around the base. And theres the the base. And theres the potential that it could resprout and although, you know, the form of the tree, which is part of its beauty and the reason it was so iconic, although that has probably been ruined and the tree could regenerate in some way and its not necessarily dead. Do you have to do anything to it then to help it regenerate . Well, it says they say theyve put up a fence now to stop people , you know, visiting i it seems like because of this outpouring of grief, it seems like because of this outpouring of grief , theres outpouring of grief, theres lots of people have come to take a look. But if it was protect, a look. But if it was protect, did you know the fence kept there to stop. People tramping there to stop. People tramping all over people or animals or people, you know, sometimes someone might want to, you know, like people take home a piece of the berlin wall if theres a fresh would be a lovely fresh that would be a lovely fresh that would be a lovely fresh might fresh sprout. Someone might say, oh, and you know, oh, look at that. And you know, take if like a big dinner take a so if like a big dinner plate. Youve got the big right . Youve got the big stump that starts to rot. Yeah. But youve got other shoots coming up around it. How long would it take before any of them formed into a recognisable tree . Well, its a sycamore , isnt it . Well, its a sycamore, isnt it . It is a sycamore. Yeah. Theyre very hardy. Theyre renowned for being for resprouting once theyve been cut down. So it its certainly not the end. The next year, the incoming, the coming spring will be will tell us. But what youd expect is a number instead of one single stem. You know what one single stem. You know what we call a maiden which is a tree with one single stem. Youll have multiple stems which will all grow very tall and straight, but it wont be that classic tree. Itll never look the same again. But it would be lovely if it lived in some way, you know, in some ways, you know, rome was sacked how many times . Sacked how many times . Its there, you and its still there, you know, its different, but its. Its still rome. Yeah. Perhaps its still rome. Yeah. Perhaps the sycamore gap will still have a sycamore. A sycamore. I was wondering if they could weave together if they had weave it together if they had lots of different stems. You could together could weave it together and create but create something wonderful. But weve there. Weve got to leave it there. Were so much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. You. Thank you. Thank you. Camilla up next Camilla Tominey is up next after. Weather after your.
