This is gb news across the uk on tv , in your car, on digital on tv, in your car, on Digital Radio and on your Smart Speaker by saying play gb news now its over to. Neil over to. Neil weve all been watching the longest running show of modern times. Its been running so long now. In fact, no one remembers a time before the show the actors change. No one stays youthful and younger ones replaced those grown too old to carry off their parts. At least some of them. But the script and the big song and dance numbers, those stay the same. Give them the old Razzle Dazzle , Razzle Dazzle Razzle Dazzle, Razzle Dazzle them. I said Razzle Dazzle them. Midazolam no one jokes about midazolam. Careful staging meant midazolam. Careful staging meant the whole effect was spectacular. For ages, audiences went home convinced that seen real people telling a true story, the stars were luminous, the atmosphere enveloping. They could remember enveloping. They could remember the songs , teach them to their the songs, teach them to their kids during some or other performance. A few years back, however, the house lights started to come up one by one and then a few at a time. Theatres with the lights on are tired, old places without the illusion, the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd. Theyre just empty rooms crowd. Theyre just empty rooms. More and more of the audience can see how its done. The shape of the stage, the trap doors and the clapboard scenery, the pan stick makeup on the faces of the cast, the tops of the heads of the musicians and the orchestra pit, how they were supposed to be fooled by a world of make believe, make believe is a fragile bubble. Once its pncked fragile bubble. Once its pricked , its gone. The make pricked, its gone. The make believe im referring to is the story our politicians and other performers other actors have been telling us about the ways of the world and in this scenario, the house lights the revealing illumination has been provided by the internet. The provided by the internet. The internet was the idea of the us military. A lot of the best tncks military. A lot of the best tricks are to keep their boffins computers working. No matter what happened in a world made unpredictable by nuclear weapons. But its unintended consequence was to connect billiard of people who would never otherwise have known of each others existence and let them talk. The internets been them talk. The internets been growing around us since the 1960s, but in recent years it reached Critical Mass and now it has unexpectedly turned a bright and revealing light onto what was supposed to remain as shadows. Thats why it suits them to blame the internet for so called conspiracy theories and misinformation and to seek to censor it back on that stage where the latest cast of actors are still hamming it up as hard as it can go, the show might soon be over. More and more of the audience, especially in the cheap seats, are restless, aware of how uncomfortable their seats are. Now the illusion is are. Now the illusion is shattered. Its not fun anymore. Shattered. Its not fun anymore. Not in the way the creators intended. Worse more of the audience are whispering among themselves , laughing at instead themselves, laughing at instead of with whats happening on stage. Who knows . Audiences stage. Who knows . Audiences being fickle. It may only be being fickle. It may only be a little while before the bags of rotten fruit come out for the first time in the shows long run. A lot lines sound old run. A lot of lines sound old and tired, and yet the hammy actors are still trotting them out. Because, after all, thats out. Because, after all, thats showbiz and the show must go on. Safe and effective, used to get a round of applause, much like were all in it together and its an emergency and were doing our best now. Those tried and trusted staples just get a groan , build back better. Do us groan, build back better. Do us a favour. Surely no one buys that one anymore. Saving democracy that used to have them on their feet and cheering. No, it sounds hollow. Like the sets and the backdrop. Climate crisis. A world at boiling point. The clock is ticking. Pull the other one. Mutter the hecklers. Its one. Mutter the hecklers. Its got bells on. Give the showrunners their due. They try and keep the show fresh with the addition of special guests. Since war in ukraine is running out of steam, big guns are now pointed at nigeria of all places. No one in the audience saw that one coming. Niger, wearing even as niger, they call the chorus. Niger has apparently forgotten its rule and has been ad libbing , telling the french ad libbing, telling the french to leave them under uranium used by france for vital and valuable electricity alone. Unlike the army of russia, the previous body , which has the fifth most body, which has the fifth most powerful fighting force in the world, a real contender for nigers army, ranks. World, a real contender for nigers army, ranks. Just 119 nigers army, ranks. Just 119 out of a world total of 145. Surely theyve just been wheeled on stage as a fall guy. The ageing hero can knock out with a single punch , all joking aside, single punch, all joking aside, and it really , really isnt and it really, really isnt funny. Why does the west keep barging on stage in africa . One african country after another down the decades made to take the fall, though none of those african lives matter , apart from african lives matter, apart from the gross asymmetry in any fight involving the us and an impoverished west african nation, utterly exhausted by decades of plunder by the west , decades of plunder by the west, another war is a familiar plotline in pantomime villain Victoria Nuland , acting united Victoria Nuland, acting United States deputy secretary of state , has been reprising the role she played in ukraine. Another performance of her big number, which is its my way or the highway , but its anyones guess highway, but its anyones guess if the crowd are ready to join in at the chorus this time. Its an increasingly tough room. The an increasingly tough room. The crowd are supposed to join in with the big numbers for a while now, its been how do you solve a problem like imran khan , a a problem like imran khan, a generation or two of british audiences . Remember imran khan as an iconic cricketing celebrity and international playboy. He wooed and wed playboy. He wooed and wed Society Princess Jemima Goldsmith , and we were told they goldsmith, and we were told they lived a life of enviable glamour and a plot twist of note. Khan put the glitz behind him and embarked on a successful career as a politician emerging in time as a politician emerging in time as a politician emerging in time as a man of his people back in his homeland of pakistan, he reached and held the office of Prime Minister. He paid for the building of cancer hospitals. There out of his own pocket. People love him there. Back in march last year, khan deviated from the script when he refused to condemn russia for her invasion of ukraine. Coming up with lines of his own, he asked of the west, what do you think of the west, what do you think of us . Are we your slaves . Warming to his theme, he said , warming to his theme, he said, we are friends with russia and we are also friends with america. We are friends with china and with europe. We are not in any he said. Not in any camp, he said. Pakistan would remain neutral and would work with those trying to end the war in ukraine. The us accused khans pakistan of what they called aggressive neutrality , which sounds like an neutrality, which sounds like an oxymoron to me, but what do i know by now . Imran khan has been deposed as Prime Minister and is presently in jail. Whether he will emerge from behind bars to perform a third act is anyones guess. But the audience are not holding their breath. If all the holding their breath. If all the worlds are stage , then surely worlds are stage, then surely the us is the west end or the end of the west. Whats end of the west. Whats happening to that country now would be comedy or a downright farce if it wasnt actually a tragedy. Former president donald tragedy. Former President Donald Trump has been being savaged by the so called liberal critics since at least 2016. They never get tired of pointing out all the flaws in his performance, despite the fact he was a real crowd pleaser for millions of his countrymen. The most recent plot has him apparently destined for jail, accused of everything under the sun while present President Joe Biden heads a family whose corruption is exposed for all to see the dodgy deaungs exposed for all to see the dodgy dealings are centre stage brightly spotlit. And yet the brightly spotlit. And yet the audience is not supposed to notice. Who are they kidding . Notice. Who are they kidding . Its not just the big set pieces that are exposed by the unforgiving light of online chatter and information sharing. Even the throwaway gags are failing to land back here in britain, former covid medical officer Jonathan Van Tam , just officer Jonathan Van Tam, just as he was described on the flyer for the show, has exited stage left one of many bad actors pursued not by a bear but by uncounted numbers of those injured or dead on account of the injectables he helped push. The injectables he helped push. While, in my opinion, wearing the costume of a government adviser and is presently demonstrating the breadth of his acting skills by taking on a leading role for big pharma giant moderna, who we laughed all together. Now oh no, we didnt. Much to the annoyance of the scriptwriters. A bunch dismissed at first as mere hecklers named gb news have been stealing some of the limelight. And just the last few weeks weve seen to the humiliating climbdown of high and mighty bankers who entitled themselves to deny Bank Accounts to and so effectively make non people of all manner of law abiding and taxpaying citizens of this country. And this week , gb news country. And this week, gb news handed over a petition signed by a third of a Million Viewers demanding a guaranteed, secure future for cash in this country. No sooner did it land than the treasury, no less issued a statement saying gb news had got the parlous situation of cash spot on and declaring that action would be taken to protect the notes and pounds. Action would be taken to protect the notes and pounds. As our the notes and pounds. As our economist Liam Halligan has been saying all week, 2 Million People in this country have no bank account and 10 of households, no regular access to the internet. So that cash is nothing less than their lifeblood. And youd want to lifeblood. And youd want to hawk. The treasury arent just hawk. The treasury arent just playing to the gallery throwing sweeties into the crowd as a distraction , and only time will distraction, and only time will tell if their pledge is just another act, another line they can score out later on. Ghastly is a 1938 play about a husband who uses lies and cheap tricks to try and persuade his wife. Shes going mad so that it might steal from her, among other things , he tampers with the things, he tampers with the gaslighting in their home, turning it steadily down when she says its growing dimmer and dimmer, he tells us she must be insane. As is often said now, we, the audience, are presently being gaslighted by a whole cast of bad actors posing as our leaders. I see it so they can leaders. I see it so they can see its us going mad while they dismantle the world around us and line their pockets along the way. But the more we see of their deceit, the more the shadows are illuminated instead by the conversations we can have with each other, by the truth to be found the online world and be found in the online world and elsewhere the they elsewhere. The more they overreact and desperately until the no more convincing than the cardboard sets of surrounded themselves with, heres the thing. Despite their wish , we thing. Despite their wish, we were still in the dark. The lights are on the auditorium lights are on in the auditorium. I say the shows over. Whether those bad actors accept it or not. The band stopped playing. Not. The band stopped playing. The lights are well and truly on, and we are tired of the fiction. Theres nothing else for it but to leave them to it, to walk out into the light of day and get about the business of real life. Thats all folks. Of real life. Thats all folks. Thats my opinion. And youre free to disagree if you like. Keep your tweets and emails coming through the show. You can email gb views at gb news. And you can tweet me as well to gb news and ill try to get to your comments later in the show. Comments later in the show. Laura, what do you make of what i had to say . Laura dodsworth of course you need no introduction to this show. I always need the introduction. Introduction. Well, i mean you are, you are the monologue man. If all the worlds a stage, you do a jolly good soliloquy. I think. I think the reason that monologues are popular is because there are these very poetic elegies, but with a an artery of anger, you know , i hear that and it know, i hear that and it resonates as it does for many thousands of people. Do you think do you think weve been subjected . I think its a fiction. I think weve been lied to. And theres been been lied to. And theres been a pretence around reality thats now being exploits. Yes. Now dont worry. I wasnt going to compliment you for too much longer. I was just going to say i feel myself having having been sliding off the fence a little on this issue myself, you know , i recently myself, you know, i recently just changed the introduction on my and i said, live my substack and i said, we live in extraordinary they are in extraordinary times. They are nothing of apocalyptic. No nothing short of apocalyptic. No i dont mean the worlds boiling. Not that i mean, you know, in the original greek meaning of the word, we live in a time of an unveiling and a revealing and a laying bare of truth. And more and more people see things to be artificially constructed and what it is, is its a grand deception. Its a macabre play on our innocence, our trust and our human biases. And our fallibility. Its why i just wrote my last book, free your mind the new world of manipulation. How to resist it. Because i dont think weve ever lived in a time like this. I tell you what, though, you do say that were all working it out because of the internet. But i actually think its more than that. I dont think its just that. I dont think its just that were were seeing in the dark were kept dark dark corners that were kept dark and think they and secret, i think that they are also drawing back the curtain. Theres one chapter in curtain. Theres one chapter in my book called bicep2 the big brother. And i open with we open patrick fagan, my co author. And patrick fagan, my co author. And |, patrick fagan, my co author. And i, we open with a Us Army Recruitment video, and its called ghosts in the machine. And it says all the worlds a stage and youve never seen anything like it. You would think this Us Army Recruitment video is actually a trailer for the latest horror film, maybe a part of the batman franchise or a video game , but its not as a video game, but its not as a recruitment video to the us fourth army psyop division. More fourth army psyop division. More and more were being told about psyops, about propaganda. You know, the nudge unit publishes its reports. We live in this time, which is so post factual that theyre even talking about what they do while they do it work in their in their favour. I mean, why would you why would you why would a magician reveal how his tricks work . Whats the gain . Well, only some of it, i tell you if were being told you what, if were being told how things do how some things work, i do wonder how. Much else is wonder how. How much else is left in the shadows. I mean, its just like a little small detail. But another thing i noficed detail. But another thing i noticed was the noticed last year was the National Intelligence for military unit. Might military aviation unit. I might have that a bit but have got that a bit wrong, but essentially one of the Us Army Aviation its logo aviation units changed its logo for one day last autumn. It for one day last autumn. It changed from aircraft to a changed it from aircraft to a collection of aircraft and a flying saucer. Collection of aircraft and a flying saucer. And i collection of aircraft and a flying saucer. And i contacted flying saucer. And i contacted their press division at the time and said, oh, whats you know, whats this . Whats this new logo about . And eventually my request gets passed around like a hot grenade between sergeant majors of publicity. And they come they say its an come back and they say its an incorrect logo posted erroneously. Well of course its not. Cant me that the not. You cant tell me that the Us Government erroneously posted a logo with a flying saucer on it. So lots of these lots of these Little Things happen. What does mean . Dont know. But does it mean . I dont know. But i what tyranny stops i tell you what tyranny stops when people call out the truth. So, know, the last defence so, you know, the last defence against to witness, against tyranny is to witness, to and to call out the truth. And its easy. And its easy. It is easy. It is easy. It is to remember anything. Up it is to remember anything. Up next, how do you solve a problem like imran khan . The former Prime Minister of pakistan, serving three years pakistan, is serving three years in but ones talking in jail. But no ones talking about why are we joined by about it. Why are we joined by Kwasi Kwarteng the henry Kwasi Kwarteng from the Henry Jackson explain. Jackson society to explain. Radio. Welcome back. Youve already been in touch with some thoughts. Paul in middlesex says , love that all middlesex says, love that all the worlds a stage analogy to describe the current times across the globe. Neil just shows how timeless shakespeare isindeed. I shows how timeless shakespeare is indeed. I who else have we is indeed. I who else have we got here . Mark the blackout curtains are twitching. The lights are coming on. Michael in barnsley says the parallel of imran khan and donald trump is interested , something id not interested, something id not thought of before. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Both celebrities turned, politicians turned into criminals. How bizarre. Here we criminals. How bizarre. Here we are then and first up, what is going on in pakistan . Who are the key players and what are their objectives . Pakistan is their objectives . Pakistan is amongst much else a Nuclear Power and therefore definitely worth paying attention to for people in my generation. Imran khan, former Prime Minister of pakistan, but more recently imprisoned on all manner of charges, was a glamorous celebrity leading what seemed to be a gilded life. What happened and what is happening in his homeland. To help me understand, homeland. To help me understand, as my first guest this evening, Kwasi Kwarteng , a research Kwasi Kwarteng, a Research Fellow Kings College war fellow at Kings College war department. Thanks for coming department. Thanks for coming in. Bring us up to speed. What in. Bring us up to speed. What is happening . What has happened to imran khan . So what seems to have happenedis so what seems to have happened is that imran khan has had some charges being brought against him and hes been found guilty of selling or purchasing state assets and has now been found guilty as a result of that. And what that means is for the next three years, hes going to be imprisoned and for the next five years, he wont be able to stand for parliament through his party, which is the pti. So this seems to have happened over since last year. And hes obviously been silenced actually in pakistan because the media havent been able to report on this issue quite recently because the army have been taking control. How how suspicious ought we to be given that his downfall followed those comments to which i referred , where he wouldnt i referred, where he wouldnt join in the chorus of condemning russia and wanted to maintain a neutral stance, and now hes gone. Neutral stance, and now hes gone. I mean, should we be gone. I mean, should we be should we be a bit sceptical about that trajectory . I think yes, we should be. Of course, its a concoction of things that have taken place as as a result. So yes , that might as a result. So yes, that might have been what had broken the camels back, but he has been himself quite a divisive figure in terms of his relation to the west. So he doesnt like the west. So he doesnt like the west dictating how internal politics in pakistan should be carried out. Of course, its a carried out. Of course, its a sovereign nation. Its a Nuclear Power as well. So there are a number of elements that are taking place and that could have been the reason why , you know, been the reason why, you know, hes been taken that far. You see a divisive figure. See a divisive figure. But ive understood insofar as i can that in pakistan he is as i can that in pakistan he is a man of the people and has and when i when i speak to pakistani people here in britain about him , the overwhelming comment i get about him is that he was loved. He was in fact, he won the popular vote by 16 million. He got shahbaz sharif, whos the Current Interim Prime Minister, had only got 12 million. So hes clearly a popular figure. Hes popular figure with the diaspora here. And you can see it when he was taken to court. You know, the whole country erupted. Hes got the biggest majority in the punjab region. So, you know, he punjab region. So, you know, he is you know, he did win and he won decisively. But in terms of won decisively. But in terms of western relations , he does seem western relations, he does seem to be divisive. To be divisive. A lot of i have alluded to the thought that he was so famous. You know, he was a David Beckham type character , you beckham type character, you know, in the in the 90s, you know, in the in the 90s, you know, a very glamorous, you know, a very glamorous, you know, a very glamorous, you know, a brilliant sportsman and so on. And, you know, we followed his life in the way that we follow these sporting celebrities. And yet, given that hes had this downfall, hes now in doesnt feel like we in jail, doesnt feel like we are, our media is following are, that our media is following that with any kind of that story with any kind of level of interest. Yeah, no, absolutely. Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, when i saw this was a story on your show tonight, i realised i was so behind on the story. And so obviously coming on tv to discuss imran khan, it looked i looked at whats been going on and i think its really had quite scant coverage and in a that is the story now, a sense that is the story now, of course, hes hes very popular in pakistan for multiple reasons. And one is he talks about corruption , corruption in about corruption, corruption in the two major families. He also the two major families. He also cast aspersions, doesnt he, about the so called neutrality of the Pakistani Army and the involvement of the cia. And it just makes you suspicious, actually, when there is very little coverage that theres a bigger story underneath that suppressed it. Why . Why didnt i know more about the imran khan story . Partly, im probably not story . Partly, im probably not reading the International Pages enough, but i dont think it is just that. I mean, this is this is a huge story. You get a sense that the law has been weaponised against him in a similar way to donald also in a donald trump and also in a smaller to boris johnson. Smaller way to boris johnson. And feels a real and it feels like a real flailing of the to state flailing around of the to state prevent the popular candidate from holding power. Well , how do you from holding power. Well, how do you read it . Am i right . Are we right in thinking that this should be a huge story here . Its one of ours or he was one of ours for a long time. Yeah absolutely. It should be a huge story. It doesnt seem to be. And we were talking off air i mentioned talking off air and i mentioned that just seems like its that this just seems like its business usual. The business as usual. And the reason why say this is because reason why i say this is because since inception over since pakistans inception over 75 years ago, weve had 29 Prime Ministers during that period and not one of them has actually carried out that 4 or 5 year term. Yeah so some of them have resigned. Some of them have been jailed. One was assassinated. So there is something in the dna of pakistan that doesnt allow Prime Ministers to actually carry out what they need to do in the best interests of their people and why, as a nation, were not talking about it. Is a really important question. Just to put this into context, when rishi sunak was asked about this at Prime Ministers question , he at Prime Ministers question, he just said, well, this is an internal matter and were monitoring it. And that was about it. About it. What is life like for the people of pakistan . I mean, in people of pakistan . I mean, in terms of rule of law, you know, its a its a its a democracy. You know, how is life playing out for them . Standard of living in the rest. So the standard of living is quite dire. The inflation is at like over 30. People are struggling. Weve had the floods there. Weve had a lot of corruption generally in those areas and people are not, you know, getting the standard of living that they that they need. And pakistan obviously are trying their best to navigate that situation, which is perhaps why theyve taken this so called aggressive neutrality when it came to russia in terms of perhaps oil sales or being able to export or import wheat and things like this. So they do have a really difficult task on their hands. But unfortunately , their hands. But unfortunately, it is the pakistani people who are suffering as a result. How are we to read us secretary of state Anthony Blinken seeing no that we look forward to democratic elections in pakistan. Why wouldnt we in pakistan. Why wouldnt we have been looking forward to democratic elections in pakistan had imran khan continued to be . Yeah, i its really difficult to say. Obviously the optics of it suggest that theres something deeper behind it. Only recently i dont know if youre aware the intercept have actually published a cipher regarding us Foreign Policy in regards to imran khan and what they allegedly have said is that we need to remove him so that we can get pakistan back up to business as usual with in terms of our Foreign Policy relations. So obviously, as as the public see this, they do feel like theres Something Else happening there. Its like its like hes not he didnt stick to the script to continue the analysis i have there been riots or will there be there have been riots. There be there have been riots. But the problem is that the british, the Pakistani Army are suppressing the riots and theyve also suppressed the media from actually reporting on these riots. So we dont actually get to see this internationally. What whats happening . But if you talk to pakistanis on the ground , they pakistanis on the ground, they will tell you that were out rioting. Were out protesting. We were standing up we you know, were standing up for our democratic right to have this person represent us. And thats being suppressed by the Pakistani Army. Also wouldnt the more politically clever thing to do to have been to let them stay in power and take the fall for the inflation . You would think so. Youre going to have to move on. You so much for your on. Thank you so much for your insights. Its a huge story and it is to keep following it as as the as the weeks come on. The weeks. As the weeks come on. Still come, as the former still to come, as the former president donald faces President Donald Trump, faces dozens charges, does dozens of criminal charges, does the have his the president s son have his shady under rug . Shady past swept under the rug . Us politics aficionado eric halm joins us live from washington very shortly. First, though, lets check up on the weather. Lets check up on the weather. The wind starting to up two and starting to pick up two and temperatures in the low 20s, tuesday wednesday, largely tuesday and wednesday, largely dry. Few showers in the dry. Just a few showers in the north temperatures above north and temperatures above average looks like things are heating up. Heating up. Boxed boilers proud sponsors of weather on. Radio. Welcome back to neil oliver live with former us president. And in the running for a second term, donald trump is under sustained attack. Indictment sustained attack. Indictment after indictment is levelled at him so that the prospect of a president ial candidate behind bars seems less and less unlikely. As events unfold. Its unlikely. As events unfold. Its all too fascinating for words. All too fascinating for words. And joining me now from fulton county, georgia, to help me understand the twists and turns is eric ham, congressional staffer and bestselling author. Staffer and bestselling author. Good evening, eric. Good to be here. Thanks for having me. I know a lovely thank you for thank you for being there, eric. First of all, it seems to be non partisan. Its an ignoble time in us politics. No allies back and forth, not a good look for anyone. No, thats absolutely right. In fact, we have seen perhaps over the last two decades, National Politics in washington have become increasingly polarised in fact, many of the issues that have been seen as perhaps the third or the final rail in politics, typically areas where you dont see polarised nation have become such now. And some of those such now. And some of those issues include Foreign Policy, for example , the ongoing war in for example, the ongoing war in ukraine. We have seen democrats and republicans fight over this issue. But its not just democrats and republican. Its democrats and republican. Its republican versus republican. Republican versus republican. Now, the lines are being drawn. Now, the lines are being drawn. Whether or not you support Vladimir Putin or you support of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and so that just gives you an indication of just gives you an indication of just how polarised and how toxic politics in the United States have become. Have become. A lot of people here in the uk talk about the emergence of a uni party, the distinctions the previously understood distinctions between our two principal parties. For example , principal parties. For example, conservative and labour have have blurred to the point where you cant tell one from another. You know, is something similar happening in america where its not about being republican or democrat anymore. The divisions democrat anymore. The divisions are running across different lines. Lines. No, i think theres still very much that demarcate between democrat and republican. But also i think what youre seeing, even within the two parties, for example , in the democratic example, in the democratic party, you have what are known as progressives and you have some progressives who continue to fight tooth and nail again , to fight tooth and nail again, the agenda of the current president , joe biden. But also president , joe biden. But also in that you have some democrats who are seen as centrist or conservative democrats. That would be people like senator joe would be people like Senatorjoe Manchin of west virginia. Now, thats a state where donald trump received the largest percentage of his vote than any other state. And so you have a democrat who is in identifies as that in name, but many of his policies and many of his actions somehow suggest that he is perhaps more sympathetic to that of republican on the republican side. What you have seen is since donald trump has taken control of the party, there have been a number of republicans who have either left the party altogether or have pretty much gonein altogether or have pretty much gone in hiding. Altogether or have pretty much gone in hiding. And so now what gone in hiding. And so now what youre seeing is youre seeing this maga republican that is now pretty much the standard bearer. And its also determination, a determination of who actually gets elected , because oftentimes gets elected, because oftentimes in both respective parties, what youre seeing play out is the primary system. So one of the primary system. So one of the Major Concerns that were seeing is people on either side who do not want to get primary. And so much of that is determined by your leftist or your right politics in terms of how able, if youre able to actually survive. Survive. What about what seems from from this side of the atlantic a tit for tat going on . You every time i saw a piece on fox news, every time there was new about questionable behaviour by hunter biden or the biden family , it biden or the biden family, it was almost immediately followed by an indictment for trump. You know , is it desperate know, is it desperate distraction by a beleaguered incumbent . You know, you know, anytime he or they are accused of something, the only defence they can come up with is just to indict trump for Something Else i well, i think m well, i think we see that play well, i think we see that play out on both sides of the aisle where you know it. Washington has become a place where its not necessarily about getting anything done more so than it is about stopping the other side from actually getting something done. And so i think what youre seeing here now play out particularly is there is a group of republicans particularly who are in control of the house of representatives who have moved to this brand of politics, where its about attacking the bidens and also placing this moniker on the bidens in a in a way, i think, to muddy the waters or somehow show or highlight or underscore that the biden family is very similar to many of the same attacks that we saw on the trump family over those four years that President Trump was in office. I think the difference, however, is unlike the trumps , however, is unlike the trumps, joe biden does not have hunter biden, who many in america recognise as perhaps a wayward or black sheep of the family. He has not, and nor does he serve in this admin nation. No, no. Ive also got a guest in the studio with me, eric. A lot of were fascinated as a nation, as individuals, by what happensin nation, as individuals, by what happens in washington, what happens in washington, what happens with american politics. What do you make of the level to which the debate seems to have dropped between democrat and republican or whatever . Republican or whatever . Its terrible. A couple of things really strike me. I mean, first of all, congress subpoenaed meta. Thats facebook to provide files because the fbi had said that theyd only met facebook once about the hunter biden laptop story and that they hadnt biden laptop story and that they hadnt known that it was true. And this was patently untrue. The reams of communications , i the reams of communications, i mean, this is lying at the highest level to suppress a story that would have damaged biden in the election. Thats the first thing. The second thing is, what are they doing . Because isnt it obvious that all these indictments, what they do they they end up do is they they end up portraying trump as most portraying trump as the most fearsome candidates that the democrats up against. And his fundraising has swelled his popularity has soared. And i think, well, if i can work out, that would happen. What are they that would happen. What are they playing at . Thats a good question, eric. What are they playing out as laura it does. It just laura says, it does. It just does seem to be the democrats playing into republican hands in making trump , you know, more and making trump, you know, more and more someone they will feel motivated to vote for, to defend, to stand up with. Defend, to stand up with. You know, i think we have to be careful in terms of how. We be careful in terms of how. We engagein be careful in terms of how. We engage in this discussion , engage in this discussion, particularly as if what is happening to donald trump is actually coming from democrats. Actually coming from democrats. And its not its coming from the state itself. Now, people will say, well, joe biden is in control of that state, but in the United States, what we have seen particularly with the white house and the justice department, the white house for decades have tried to maintain a wall of independence between the white house and the justice department. So it doesnt appear as though there is a thumb being placed on the scale. And so, for placed on the scale. And so, for example, in the case of hunter biden, what what people may not be aware of is the us attorney who has been investigating and who has been investigating and who actually created this deal thatis who actually created this deal that is now blown up with hunter biden. That was actually a trump appointee at us attorney who joe biden kept on as the us attorney to continue to engage in that case. And now we see that he has been made a full special counsel, which gives him greater independence to pursue the matter. But what we have but, but what we have to be clear that at least what were seeing here is this administration has tried to maintain some distance between the personal of joe biden and, of course , the law biden and, of course, the law enforcement, which certainly has every right to go after hunter biden for both his tax dealings and criminal activities as it relates to this gun charge. And it can, trust me, ive got about another 20 questions that i wanted to ask you. I have simply been beaten by time, but author and political pundit, thank you so much for your insights this evening. Well speak again. I hope. No, have to interrupt that conversation because coming up, interrupt that conversation because coming up , waterfalls. Because coming up, waterfalls. Yes you heard it here. Waterfalls are being released at a secret location in cumbria. And well hear why the endangered species will hopefully make a comeback. Back in a couple of minutes welcome back to me, neil oliver, live conservation are helping waterfalls stage a comeback in cumbria once widespread all over the british archipelago. The critters have been all but dnven critters have been all but driven to extinction in recent decades. The number is down from 8 million to just over 100,000. The final guest tonight is ecologist derek gow , a key ecologist derek gow, a key player in the effort to reinforce state the species in the Lake District. Hello, derek the Lake District. Hello, derek. Delighted to have you , neil. Delighted to have you, neil. How are you . How are you . Good , thank you. Good, thank you. Good, thank you. Nice to be here. Nice to be here. What happened to cause the near disappearance of the waterfall in the United Kingdom i well, 5mm well, what happened . If you look back far enough, is that we drained all the wetlands that were in britain to the point where theres only 1 of them left. And then killed animals left. And then we killed animals like beaver , which create like the beaver, which create habitat waterfalls and frogs habitat for waterfalls and frogs and dragonflies and a whole host of species. And then we of other species. And then we pushed over centuries into pushed them over centuries into a very narrow along the a very narrow line along the edges of the rivers and streams and canals. And now, because of and canals. And now, because of intensive agriculture and because of a vastly changed landscape, its very difficult for these Little Creatures to hang on in environments like that. But in cumbria , whats that. But in cumbria, whats happenedis that. But in cumbria, whats happened is the rspb and partner have created significant pool mosaics in the uplands of valley systems like swindoll. And systems like swindoll. And thats why were reintroducing water waterfalls back into those 40 is the part that is played usefully in the ecosystem by water voles. Whats their job . Their role i okay. They have multiple okay. They have multiple roles. One is that theyre the britains largest of all species. So if youre a marsh harrier or a heron or whatever else is feeding in a wetland , else is feeding in a wetland, then this is the big mac of the vole world as far as youre concerned. So they provide a huge abundance of food or would do normally otherwise in circumstances that are appropriate. Also, the natures water gardeners, they live along the edges of rivers and streams. They make burrow systems that things like frogs and toads and newts used to overwinter in grass next use them as well. And they prune the sweet plants and allow other plants that otherwise wouldnt predominate in those environments to have a chance of growing and succeeding. So they provide those functions and in that theyre incredibly significant. When will you know if this project that youre embarking upon now is a success . Well , i upon now is a success . Well, i mean, its going to be a few years in the understanding, so therell be several years of monitoring. But weve run a number of projects like this before. I mean, one of the successful was in the the most successful was in the queen forest, forest Queen Elizabeth forest, forest park and the park in argyll. And the waterville population that we re established there, know, re established there, you know, in conjunction with the Forestry Commission and the National Park now area about now occupies an area of about 100mi2 and is expanding rapidly and doing very well. So were utterly confident from the background we have with regard to the species that we can put them back into environments. And if the circle instances are right and additionally , you use right and additionally, you use modern right and additionally, you use modem to control modern technology to control introduce north american mink and which predate them in a way that no native predator does, that no native predator does, that they will succeed and survive go to do very survive and go on to do very well. Well. Its lovely. Im always delighted to hear about some of the other Little Critter thats being reinstated and given a foothold once again in the in the in the wonderful ecosystem that ours in this that is ours in this archipelago. You much archipelago. Thank you very much for this evening. For joining me this evening. Thats its 7 00. This is thats it. Its 7 00. This is neil oliver live on tv online and on dab plus radio.
