Let me just ask you both quickly, would you volunteer to get on flight to space . Get on that flight to space . Yeah , i think it could be yeah, i think so. It could be fun. You. Fun. Would you. You . I would i had would you . I would if i had the money or if it was a competition, you could have entered competition. I wish. Entered a competition. I wish. I wish id seen the opportunity. No think i mean, no i think its. I mean, obviously will have to have obviously you will have to have the ultimately to be able obviously you will have to have th you were watching last night, you might remember that we had a conversation about social conversation nation about social media its scourge conversation nation about social me society, its scourge conversation nation about social me society, whether its scourge conversation nation about social me society, whether its a scourge conversation nation about social me society, whether its a force ge on society, whether its a force for what, and the thing for good or what, and the thing that sparked that conversation last fact that last night was the fact that there groups of people there were groups of people organising, were going organising, that they were going to join forces Oxford Street to join forces on Oxford Street here in london and basically ransack try and ransack the streets and try and loot whatever it was that they wanted to get their hands on. Im showing you some of the footage now. The absolute state of goings on. They were join of the goings on. They were join forces. There was apparently a bit of a dress code ballet and gloves, which to you and i is your balaclava. And your gloves. And the plan was just to go and help quite frankly, help yourself, quite frankly, to whatever that you felt whatever it was that you felt fit and i look at that and to me , it looks like groups of kind of feral animals , theyre of feral animals, theyre charging from one side of the street en masse, charging to the other side. I cannot imagine how other side. I cannot imagine how frightening it must have been for your average random worker or shopper or tourist or whatever it is to have been caught up in that anyway, today, Suella Braverman shes not having any of it. Shes taken to twitter. If i can just show you her tweet and she says basically, were not going to allow we cannot allow the kind of lawlessness seen in some American Cities to come to the streets of the uk. The police have my full backing to do whatever necessary to ensure pubuc whatever necessary to ensure public order. She goes on to say that those responsible must be hunted down and locked up and she says she expects nothing less from the met police, and she has requested a full incident report. And all the rest of it. By the way, i love when she says we cannot allow the streets to become like that. I would say that that ship is already sailed. When you see scenes like that, were already there. David caton yes, certainly happened certainly what happened yesterday was disturbing. Yesterday was very disturbing. It was it was chaos, it was essentially riot, i think essentially a riot, but i think there a difference between there is a difference between here happened in here and whats happened in america in terms what the america in terms of what the policy is. I mean, you have some cities in the usa that have actually completely given up and are saying, not going to are saying, were not going to arrest theyre going arrest people. Theyre going to give Carte Blanche give an absolute Carte Blanche to gangs to go into stores and loot and shoplift. Its still against the law here. And the riot police were still deployed. And this is where the riot police should be deployed. They should be going after people when is actual riot when there is an actual riot like this. Seen be like this. Ive seen them be deployed freedom. Deployed against freedom. Protesters which i was protesters which i think was absolutely terrible and wrong. Protesters which i think was abs here. Y terrible and wrong. Protesters which i think was abs here. Y ter|were and wrong. Protesters which i think was abs here. Y ter|were actually g. But here they were actually doing their job. Think they doing their job. I think they did control of it. It took did get control of it. It took a few hours. But, you know, this kind of thing needs to be stopped before it happens. But that to down a whole range that comes to down a whole range of societal factors. The prime one being Good Parenting and good family stability. Good family stability. Indeed. And im going to come im going to come on to the cause of it in a second. But joanna, your thoughts on what you can see unfolding there . I think its absolutely shameful and it should be a real and i think it should be a real wake call to everybody in wake up call to everybody in britain right now about the parlous state of Adult Authority. I mean, it seems to me these are children, me that these are children, teenagers who are completely out of it should give of control, and it should give us wake up call about the role us a wake up call about the role of the police clearly of policing the police clearly havent a grip on the havent got a grip on the situation for this to have developed. I think still the case i think its still the case that see too many police out that we see too many police out on marches or police. What on pride marches or police. What people to twitter people get up to on twitter rather than actually patrolling up and our streets. But but up and down our streets. But but i think davids absolutely right. It bigger right. It raises bigger questions about Adult Authority in all forms. Parents, teachers , teachers, social workers, even shopkeepers. I think we all in society, we all have a role to play society, we all have a role to play in telling these children this is not an appropriate way to behave. This is shameful, disgusting behaviour. See, i dont know if im a little bit Old Fashioned because i know youre not really supposed to have these views these days. Its not very pc, but i do think that youre supposed to fear the police a little bit. I think that if you do something wrong , you should do something wrong, you should be, oh, no, i hope the police dont get wind of this. And if you you hear the sirens, you see if you hear the sirens, you see if you hear the sirens, you see if you hear the sirens, you see the police. I think you should be, like panicked a little oh no. Whats going little bit. Oh no. Whats going to i dont think theres to happen . I dont think theres any all of the police. Any fear at all of the police. I dont think theres fear at dont think theres any fear at all consequences. All of legal consequences. I would to when you look would like to see when you look at, dont know, countries like at, i dont know, countries like your france, spain, places your france, your spain, places like that, those coppers there, they mess about. They they do not mess about. They will be footed. They will will be front footed. They will be in. They will be be piling in. They will be sorting it out. They will get things Water Cannons things like Water Cannons involved mean , look, involved. They go. I mean, look, this is this is france. What im showing to you now on the streets. I mean, look at that, everybody. Yes, i do everybody. And yes, i do appreciate there will be people at home saying pack it in, michelle. Kind of michelle. Thats not kind of what on the streets. And what we want on the streets. And i know well that theres i know as well that theres been reports that so called reports that say that so called warrior leads to more warrior policing leads to more unrest on the streets as opposed to but surely theres to less. But surely then theres a yeah a balance. Yeah look, i dont think you have to worry about being not being politically correct because thats the problem. Police thats the problem. The police are correct are so politically correct in this theyre this country. Theyre more concerned policing what concerned with policing what people say on social media. I mean, there was a terrible other story that we saw yesterday of a police going and arresting an autistic child just for questioning if someone was a lesbian or not. Why put all that manpower into harassing and arresting a child whos done essentially nothing wrong but this kind of stuff happens and then the response is very , very then the response is very, very long. They take a long time to get a grip of the situation. And there isnt any preventative policing either. Theres no Neighbourhood Policing in place anymore. Its all reactive. What they need to be doing instead of like policing social media for hurty words and hurty tweets is actually going and building relations with the people in the communities. So there is more of a trust there where it can be built. But then as you say, they need to calm down hard. If there is a real riot and there is real crime. And what about things like Water Cannons and stuff . Would you support the use of that . Ive got ive got im in two minds about that because i know it is effective. And you do see it is effective. And you do see it deployed other places like it deployed in other places like france germany and the france and germany and the netherlands. Its not really netherlands. But its not really the here in the uk. The done thing here in the uk. We to have you know, the we like to have you know, the bobby the beat is the idea bobby on the beat is the idea that people have of the policeman and policeman in this country and the that theyd the relationship that theyd like to have between the community the police. Community and the police. So two ways to exchange, isnt yes, know, isnt it . So, yes, you know, i dont want to be water cannoned absolutely you very absolutely not. Thank you very much. Therefore , i will walk much. And therefore, i will walk around behaving myself. I wont around behaving myself. I wont try orchestrate mass unrest, try and orchestrate mass unrest, mass mass stealing and mass looting, mass stealing and all the rest of it. And actually, if some of those kids, joanna, if they did think to themselves, you know what might come face to face with scene come face to face with a scene that i really want, quite that i dont really want, quite frankly, its water frankly, whether its Water Cannons might cannons or whatever they might think they might think twice about it, they might not so kind not think theyre so kind of cocky and and filming cocky and hard and filming themselves for and clicks themselves for kudos and clicks on likes of twitter and on the likes of twitter and social media. I certainly think that well, i certainly think that in society , in a healthy, normal society, people should be wary of the police. Certainly, i dont want to ever do anything that would bnng to ever do anything that would bring me into contact with the Police Officer on suspicion of being on the wrong side of the law. But think when you come law. But i think when you come to police wielding batons like we france and talking we see in france and talking about the use of water cannon, then i think that to me says that weve lost control that weve already lost control of situation. I mean, for of the situation. I mean, for water cannon to be the kind of threat of last resort sort, you know, suggests that kids are already pretty out of control. Already pretty out of control. If youre having to think about using those kind of measures , using those kind of measures, you really you want again , a you really you want again, a sense of Adult Authority and respect for the law, respect for Police Officers. But that means gone. But thats thats the problem. That is the problem. Problem. That is the problem. And i mean, back in my day, at risk of sounding very old, you know, it wasnt fear about being water cannon that stopped me going rob a shop on my high going to rob a shop on my high street. It was of my street. It was fear of my mother, fear of the shopkeeper, fear of neighbours, fear of people, adults in the community. Seeing what i was up to and telling my mother, you know , telling my mother, you know, that would be the bottom line. Oh, i dont know. Sometimes i do feel like an old biddy sitting here saying about how life should be it was life should be and how it was when we were young. You speak of shopkeepers, way. Shopkeepers, by the way. Something eye in something caught my eye in california. Story , you california. This story, you might seen it. Gone might have seen it. Its gone quite viral. Has this is quite viral. So it has this is a shop called 711. You can see if youre watching some fella, it goes beyond the counter. This is about the second time or something. Hes gone to this shopin something. Hes gone to this shop in one day to create carnage in there. Apparently, the goes that hed tried carnage in there. Apparently, th shopkeepen surprise you to know that that shopkeeper, he is are now in trouble with the police in the us and he is facing investigations and all the rest of it when it comes to potential assaults. Cases there make of that what you will, but i want your thoughts. Do you think were too soft in this country when it comes to policing . Is there an argument for police to be tougher or does that go against what trying to against what were trying to achieve the whole policing against what were trying to aciconsent . The whole policing against what were trying to aciconsent . And whole policing against what were trying to aciconsent . And a hole policing against what were trying to aciconsent . And a nice, olicing against what were trying to aciconsent . And a nice, happy,i by consent . And a nice, happy, friendly your Friendly Society . Give me your thoughts. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Now if you work now sad news next. If you work at wilko, of course we know by now that it is going into administration. Why you tell me radio. Hello there. Im Michelle Dewberry with you till 7 00 tonight alongside me , ive got tonight alongside me, ive got Joanna Williams, the author and the academic, and david caton, the academic, and david caton, the leader of the Heritage Party. Im asking for your thoughts on the whole policing situation and whether or not the streets are out of control in this country. And you think this country. And if you think they what the they are, then what is the answer . Coming answer . Get your thoughts coming in and well have some of your responses in a few minutes. But for the high street chain for now, the high street chain will collapsed. Weve will kerr has collapsed. Weve been wondering, it . Wont been wondering, will it . Wont it . Been trying to it . Theyve been trying to turn things around. Unfortunately it . Theyve been trying to turn thingsthinknd. Unfortunately it . Theyve been trying to turn thingsthink its unfortunately it . Theyve been trying to turn thingsthink its very, infortunately it . Theyve been trying to turn thingsthink its very, very unately and i think its very, very unfortunate they have to unfortunate they have failed to do so administrators have do so. So administrators have been in. Now, the reason been called in. Now, the reason that this is such a big deal is about 12,000 odd jobs now will be at risk, 400 Stores Across the uk. And this is really made kind of lead news across this country today for a variety of reasons. Joanna, so some people are saying its just the latest example in a failed high street or the people saying perhaps there was something not quite right with the management of the organisation, etcetera. But whatever the cause , this will be whatever the cause, this will be deeply troubling in these kind of Economic Times. Uncertainty, of Economic Times. Uncertainty, inflation, the way it is, 12,000 people to potentially be losing their jobs. Thats a theirjobs. Thats a huge number of people to lose their jobs and it will be mainly women who work in wilkinsons and this is tragic. Itll thats itll have you know, thats a bit sad. It is. Its also bit sad. It is. But its also the reality. Know that the reality. We know that retailers dominated by women, i mean, this is statistical mean, this is a statistical reality. You know, is not reality. You know, this is not like the mining jobs or like losing the mining jobs or the Steel Industry jobs as we would have done the past, would have done in the past, which dominated men. You which were dominated by men. You know, of jobs know, this loss of jobs will have a impact upon peoples have a real impact upon peoples families, the capacity of families, upon the capacity of people put food their people to put food on their childrens table. Thats childrens table. And thats tragic. I also think its really sad for people who dont have cars, people who perhaps dont have wi fi at home, who are more dependent upon shops in the high street than who are more street than people who are more able to shop online or take a car to an out of town centre. Having said all of that, you know, just very personal experience, i was in wilkinsons a weeks ago , went in a couple of weeks ago, went in with a list of five things, came out without getting any them. Out without getting any of them. And i hate to say it as well, when i asked for help, being able the things i was able to find the things i was after, the Customer Service was also appalling. So i dont really see any point in keeping failing businesses on life support indefinitely. The only support indefinitely. The only thing thats sad is that if we were in a more thriving economy, perhaps there would be other shops waiting to take the place. I think we do need to have a bit of a view on what the high street is for nowadays as. David yeah, well, i think its a perfect storm, isnt it . Its a very sad day and of course for the people whove lost their jobs and so on, but lost theirjobs and so on, but i think that theres a lot of competition here because there are a lot of businesses and high street chains doing a similar thing. So where there is a lot of competition, one of them will go out of business when in Economic Times toughen up. And thats what we are in at the moment with Interest Rates going up. People are up. So people are being squeezed. Havent so squeezed. They havent got so much income, they much disposable income, they havent money havent got as much money to spend. Supply or demand for spend. So supply or demand for the products that theyre selling going so selling is going down. So theyre making profit. And theyre making less profit. And thats market. Mean, its thats the market. I mean, its a terrible thing, but its just whats happened in this store i found quite interesting is the gmb union. So theyve been very outspoken about this. I can show you one of their tweets on the screen in just a second. But what theyre basically saying is that the situation around wilko is in their minds, entirely avoidable. Theyre saying its entering administration. Is entering into administration. Is an avoidable disaster. They say the bargain Retail Sector is strong, but bosses never capitalised. They go on to say capitalised. They go on to say that these 12,000 jobs are now at risk because of mismanagement. Now i really quite agree with that sentiment because in a cost of living crisis, the one thing that people desperately need to get their hands on are bargains. People desperately need to get their hands on are bargains. You their hands on are bargains. You know, youre always to going need to have your essential items and to get them as cheaply as possible , as conveniently as as possible, as conveniently as possible. The opportune city for that now is here and when i think about my experience of wilko, are you going in . A lot of the shelves are bare, but i can think of quite a few stores now that i can apply that to a few stores that i go into. You cant really get the products that you need. The stores, the shelving. Theyre shelving. They look like theyre in the 80s still. And i want to get hold of them and shake them, say youre doing and on the say what youre doing and on the flip this bargain, you flip side, in this bargain, you know like the retail space of bargain discount retailer is bargain and discount retailer is i people like b m i can think of people like b m home. I was saying this home bargains. I was saying this the other day, im quite addicted to the like the middle aisles like and lidl. Aisles of like aldi and lidl. You always god only knows what you there and you end up you find in there and you end up coming away with a lot more stuff you even stuff than you perhaps even need. There need. But there is such a competitive space and i think things like Opening Times like the wilkos that i used to go to, they closed like, i dont know, say five, half five. Some of their will be open their competitors will be open till 8 00 night. At till 8 00 at night. 9 00 at night stuff like that. When night and stuff like that. When people finishing work. People are finishing work. And i just think have they evolved with . Yeah. Well just think have they evolved with it. . Yeah. Well thats it. I mean, they see the bargain retail strong and yes, retail space is strong and yes, it there are lot of shops it is. There are a lot of shops and there are a lot of chains in that sector. But as you say there, if wilko are not getting their together, if theyre their act together, if theyre not it right, theyre not getting it right, if theyre not getting it right, if theyre not providing the service that people is people want, then it yeah, it is a perhaps some a case of perhaps some incompetence the part of the incompetence on the part of the managers. But should the government do anything now . Youve got 12,000 people so youve got 12,000 people potentially to the potentially about to go on the dole if they cant find other opportunities, should the government in . Government step in . I dont think so in this case because i there will be because i think there will be other for in other opportunities for them. In other opportunities for them. In other people find other chains, people will find a new jobs relatively quickly in this very this because its a very flexible sector. Do you think they where do you think they should step in . I dont. And i agree. I no, i dont. And i agree. I think i think you have to let the work , in effect, or the market work, in effect, or were a capitalist were not living in a capitalist society. Were living in much society. Were living in a much more state managed economy. And more state managed economy. And thats the uk is thats not what the uk is supposed you know , i supposed to be. You know, i think the point is when Interest Rates were historic low , rates were at an historic low, you could get away perhaps with a certain amount of mismanagement. But now that the rents properties are rents on these properties are increasing and the markets becoming much more becoming that much more competitive, going to lose competitive, were going to lose some of these zombie economies and prediction is zombie and my prediction is zombie businesses that have been kind of teetering the edge for of teetering on the edge for many i mean, this is no many years. I mean, this is no big surprise wilkinsons. Big surprise about wilkinsons. Whats down coming down the pipeline, though, unfortunately, is there are lot more is that there are a lot more businesses in this precarious situation as well. So i think this is likely to be the first of many that we see going bust. And a certain extent, this is and to a certain extent, this is sad. Its sad for the people who are losing their jobs, but are losing theirjobs, but hopefully will lead to some hopefully it will lead to some reinvestment new reinvestment and some new businesses emerging. Interested. Do any of you im interested. Do any of you out work at wilko . How do out there work at wilko . How do you feel . Because ive worked in retail the past and it is retail in the past and it is like a little bit of a family, isnt it . And often, joanna isnt it . And often, as joanna says, these jobs, often they do fit whether your fit around, whether its your family, studies or whatever family, your studies or whatever else it is. So i wonder if youre by this. How do youre affected by this. How do youre affected by this. How do you pete we live in you feel . Pete says, we live in worksop, which is to the worksop, which is home to the wilko office and the wilko head office and the warehouse you say this is warehouse house. You say this is absolutely devastating news for this because youre saying this area because youre saying its one of the main employers in that small town. And thats in that small town. And thats what i mean. Therell so many what i mean. Therell be so many people kind of people in that kind of environment it is one of the environment. If it is one of the men employees, youre not just going to have retail staff, going to have your retail staff, like said there, youre like pete said there, youre going office going to have your head office staff, youre to have your staff, youre going to have your warehouse perhaps warehouse staff, perhaps multiple family multiple people in one family relying on that single employer. I think this is a real shame and i think this is a real shame and i feel very, very sad and i get very frustrated as a business person as well because i think management have got a responsibility. You have a responsibility. You have a responsibility to your workforce responsibility. You have a responsibiiand 0 your workforce responsibility. You have a responsibiiand do our workforce responsibility. You have a responsibiiand do the workforce responsibility. You have a responsibiiand do the veryforce responsibility. You have a responsibiiand do the very best and to try and do the very best things that you can do. Apparently theyve got ten around and all the rest around staffing and all the rest of just couldnt figure of it and just couldnt figure it just to give some it out. Just to give you some context, this store goes back to 1930. Had a single hardware 1930. They had a single Hardware Store in leicester and then they expanded and expanded. And we expanded and expanded. And we know the story from there, dont we get in touch and let me know if that story does affect you and not think the and whether or not you think the government be stepping in government should be stepping in and something about it, or and doing something about it, or is market and is that just free market and this, unfortunately, is whats happening. Different accent to you, paul. Lots of you getting in touch saying that this the failing of wilko is just reflective of what is going on in the high street right now. David says, basically, your guest has hit the nail on the head. Its the dying high street. Gone are the days that you could pull up outside in your car and load the compost in the boot. Youre wright. Youvefl ragm1youvegot absolutely right. Youve got things like the red and red lines and no Parking Zones and fins lines and no Parking Zones and ltns rest of it. Ltns and all the rest of it. That makes shopping harder on the high streets. Andrew is talking about lawlessness. He says happens, says this is what happens, michel, you have a michel, when you have a generation of children grow generation of children that grow up form of up without any form of discipline at all, they go out on the streets. They dont respect their teachers and the police all the rest of it. Police and all the rest of it. And actually agree with you and i do actually agree with you on that one. I have to say, the shelves have been bare for a long time, says helen. But shes long time, says helen. But shes very sad to see wilko go. She absolutely loves it there, she says. Absolutely loves it there, she says. And barbaras blaming some says. And barbaras blaming some of on things like of this on things like Self Checkout self serve. That has changed the shopping dynamic , bernard says. Why isnt it law that when companies are making profits, they have to put aside some of this in order to cover for their future losses . I think bernard , i think theyve got bernard, i think theyve got themselves in a bit of a pickle financially. I can tell you that. And leonard, leonard has beenin that. And leonard, leonard has been in touch saying michelle, will you get off your soapbox when it comes to pensioners . Give us a break and stop talking about taking our pensions. Give us a break and stop talking about taking our pensions. Well, about taking our pensions. Well, its not me, leonard. The question has been posed because of the amount of money we will soon be spending on the state pension and were going to come to that before the end of the programme. Just merely programme. Im just merely posing question. Im just posing the question. Im just asking should pensions means posing the question. Im just asking or ould pensions means posing the question. Im just asking or not . Pensions means posing the question. Im just asking or not . Iensions means posing the question. Im just asking or not . I canons means posing the question. Im just asking or not . I can tell means posing the question. Im just asking or not . I can tell yomeans tested or not . I can tell you now that is the conversation that has got you guys talking a lot tonight and as has the next one as well. Do you think we need to leave the European Convention on on human rights . Is that the answer the is that the answer to the crossings in the channel or is it just a distraction . Ill see radio. Hello there, i am, michel jubrey keeping you company till 7 00 tonight. Jutta williams , 7 00 tonight. Jutta williams, the author and the academic alongside me, as is david katz and the leader of the Heritage Party. And theres a dog i dont know where the dog is. I cant help you with that. But i can definitely hear a dog barking. So if you can hear it as well and youre sitting there thinking, ears going and youre sitting there thirfunny . Ears going and youre sitting there thirfunny . No ears going and youre sitting there thirfunny . No theyre going and youre sitting there thirfunny . No theyre notng and youre sitting there thirfunny . No theyre not going bit funny . No theyre not going funny. You is absolutely fine. I dont know going im dont know whats going on. Im sure soon find out. Sure we will soon find out. Lots of you furious about the of you are furious about the question. Question is not me question. The question is not me about the pensions. A lot of you are angry with about the are angry with me about the start of the show. I said that i want to ask you about pensions very soon. And about a couple of years time we will be spending more, than the police, more, get this, than the police, the education and the defence budget put together state budget put together on state pension. So merely asking pension. So im merely asking a question is indeed my job. Question which is indeed my job. Is it time for pensions to be means or for the triple means tested or for the triple lock be scrapped . If i had lock to be scrapped . If i had a pound of you pound for every one of you thats shouting at the telly, get my pension. Ive earned get off my pension. Ive earned it. Id be very rich woman but for lets about the for now, lets talk about the migrants the echr zahawi migrants and the echr zahawi because this people because get this 400 people cross today in about cross the channel today in about eight separate boats. And you eight separate boats. And you know where we go with this conversation. Now, the people that cross today pretty much there or thereabouts, give or take, would be enough people to fill the bibby stockholm just for arrivals. So people for todays arrivals. So people now open the ante about this conversation about. Right. Thats it. Immediately out of the echr. Where do you stand on it . Yeah, we should have done that a long time ago. I mean, thats my policy. And my party, the Heritage Party and other people have that other people have said that theres people in the theres even people in the conservative party who are saying now, there saying that. Now, i know there are voice, i think are minority voice, but i think its sensible because this is the that the human rights the thing that the human rights lawyers and time again lawyers use time and time again to government the to stop the government or the home deporting home office from deporting people come here people who have come here illegally. So any legal illegally. And so any legal block, is legal block block, and this is a legal block which they use, we need to come out of it and consequence because echr isnt purely because the echr isnt purely just migration. Just about migration. Just about , just about migration. Just about, you its not just about, you know, asylum claims. Theres a lot more to it than that. So, yes, i can to see some extent the argument about saying get it out, get it out, get us out of it now to stop those boat crossings. Great. But at what cost . Yeah the thing is, the echr was set up by british lawyers in 1950 to help the countries in europe that have been devastated by hitler and national socialism. We dont actually need it in this country because we have all the framework of law that the echr is actually based on. We have magna carta, we have the act of settlement, we have the bill of rights, we have the anti slavery acts. We abolished slavery acts. We abolished slavery. Thats one of the slavery. Thats one of the clauses of the echr. Me you think that we could exit the echr and there would be no Material Impact on any of our rights and all the rest of it in this country . No, no, we wouldnt. We have common law as well. So our fundamental freedoms and our human rights are already written the british written into the british law, whether scottish whether its english or scottish , centuries. So we , over the centuries. So we dont need it. We need to get out of it because we do have this problem now, which was never envisaged in 1950 when it was of this mass was written of this mass migration and people playing the system. Thats what we need system. And thats what we need to get out of because that is a massive problem for this nation at the moment. Well, i absolutely agree. I completely think we should be out of the echr for all the same reasons that supported brexit reasons that i supported brexit back in 2016. I think if you believe in National Sovereign 80, which i do, then the only people who should have a say in the laws that govern this country should be british people. We should be able to vote out of office the people who have the power to make the laws that govern our lives. So the idea that theres some International Body that is able to determine what happens in this country, i think is absolutely outrageous. But but having said all that, i dont think it will solve the problem of small boats and it wont solve the problem of illegal migration. So why are they saying it then . Well, because i think its being used as an excuse. I think there is no political will in this country from the people who actually in charge, whether actually are in charge, whether thats , government thats from lawyers, government officials , Civil Servants, officials, Civil Servants, people in the media. I think there is no political will to end migration at high levels of migration to this country. Suella braverman i think they they talk the talk, but actually no, because if you look at whats happened in this government in relation to migration, obviously we put most focus on people coming over in small boats because thats a very visible sign. But actually legal levels of migration have risen phenomenally and we see that all the time. Whenever theres some kind of demand from business, be that fruit picking or, you know, pounng that fruit picking or, you know, pouring cups of coffee, you know, the first call goes up, oh, we need higher levels of migration and more often than not, the government is bowing down to it and saying, yes, okay, you can you can let more people come here to fill that gap in the economy rather than training up people in britain to do those jobs. Do those jobs. A little bit of a sledgehammer crack sledgehammer to crack a knot, because if people wanted to surely we could do things like the turn back operation, what they did when they had operation sovereign borders over in australia. Surely are australia. So surely there are things that could actually do things that we could actually do to people entering into the to stop people entering into the british waters , entering into british waters, entering into this system this way in the this system in this way in the first place. I just dont know if it feels like a kind of like quite radical solution when quite a radical solution when all the other things havent all of the other things havent yet explored. But one of yet been explored. But one of the things that people will say about push back and turn back is theyll say, michel, when you start pushing back these boats or back or whatever, or towing them back or whatever, people risk drowning. People are at risk of drowning. Now, notion about drowning, now, this notion about drowning, i dont know if anyone saw the diane tweet. So just to diane abbott tweet. So just to catch up with the story , lee catch up with the story, lee anderson, was in hot water anderson, he was in hot water a couple of days ago because he was saying that if these people , asylum seekers, illegal , these asylum seekers, illegal asylum seekers, didnt want to go on bibby stockholm, they should. His words f off to should. His words f off back to france. He in loads france. Anyway, he got in loads of trouble for that. And you will be aware as well that 41 migrants died in italy. Diane abbott very quickly responded and said and in response to that that these migrants have indeed left off. But she used the right words. But im being er professional because its tea time to the bottom of the sea basically. And shes had a backlash for that as well. Backlash for that as well. Its unsafe to yeah. Look its unsafe to come across the English Channel. Of course people are taking a risk to do that, but theyre doing it because they get rewarded in the channel. Obviously. Obviously. No, obviously youre talking about italy. There about people in italy. There have died in have been people have died in the coming across the channel coming across occasionally. Its a very, occasionally. But its a very, very percentage of very small percentage of the people who to come across people who do try to come across the and they try to the channel and they do try to come when its calm and come across when its calm and its sunny and waters are its sunny and the waters are placid. Obviously so theyve got a higher getting here. A higher chance of getting here. But is still risky. But but it is still risky. But people do risk this because they get rewarded for it. They get Hotel Accommodation , they get Hotel Accommodation, they get free they get free health free cash, they get free health care. If they bring in children as well. Not that people come on the boats children, but the boats with children, but people other ways as people coming in other ways as their get free their children get Free Education as well, especially if they themselves they anchor themselves here and bnng they anchor themselves here and bring from elsewhere bring families in from elsewhere here. So yeah, the australian system , that was good. We need system, that was good. We need to that here well. Push to do that here as well. Push the back. The boats back. No, dont understand. And no, i dont understand. And okay, can say, oh michel, okay, you can say, oh michel, youre but if youre thick or whatever, but if someone in france and they someone was in france and they want to and they reckon theyve got a legit asylum claim and all the rest of it, why would they spend . I dont know what it is, 4 or 5 grand or whatever on this dinghy with these people smugglers. Why wont they just get whatever get on an easyjet or whatever for the country for come into the country legally on a plane and then present at an embassy or whatever right, im whatever and say, right, im being and im going being tortured and im not going to camp up on the to return and camp up on the doorstep asylum office. Doorstep of the asylum office. What am i missing . Well, you cant. I mean, this is why we now have border controls in other european countries. When european countries. So when you go holiday you want to go on holiday and you want to come into the uk after come back into the uk after youve been abroad, you have your checked in france your passport checked in france or is in the air, or wherever it is in the air, what im saying is if youre a legitimate asylum seeker, so i. E. Youre not just going to chuck your stuff on the chuck all your stuff on the board overboard and things board overboard and make things complicated and perhaps not exactly true. You are what you say so if you are what you say you youre being you are and youre being persecuted, tortured, whatever. So passport, so youve got your passport, youve why youve got your papers, why wouldnt just get on wouldnt you just get on a plane, pretend youre going on holiday . Well, because, of course, get on. Course, you can get on. No, cant. Not but no, no, you cant. Not from everywhere around the world. Visas in france. World. You need visas in france. If in france, you so if youre in france, you can get a flight to the uk. Not, not not without a french passport. Had a french passport. If you had a french passport, could. But if passport, you could. But if youve got passport from youve got a passport from sudan, cannot get on a plane sudan, you cannot get on a plane in france and fly to the uk because the british passport control based in france will be saying, no, you need a visa. Saying, no, you need a visa. Wheres your visa in order to be able to come here and you wouldnt be able get that wouldnt be able to get that visa you have. I mean, this is the problem the system. The problem with the system. So all these people then. So all these people that doing from albania, that were doing it from albania, they surely have got they can surely have got a flight to uk. This is what i flight to the uk. This is what i mean, they could. Im missing mean, if they could. Im missing and sure youre yelling and im sure youre all yelling at screens saying, michel, at your screens saying, michel, you stupid, you dont you are so stupid, you dont understand. But i just i dont get why. See, get why. See, u get why. See, i dont know you see, they. I dont know if there are any direct flights from tirana to london, but if they albanians they are, i think the albanians would from the uk to would need a visa from the uk to actually be let on the plane in albania. So and then i am obviously not but not encouraging criminality, but if you can get into this kind of underworld youre this underworld where youre in this world smugglers, then world of these smugglers, then im cannot be beyond the im sure it cannot be beyond the wit man to get a fake piece wit of man to get a fake piece of paper. You could bribe the staff of the airport. Im sure lots of them do kind of that. Anyway, you know of have that. Anyway, you know what . Shut up what . Im to going shut up before get myself into spot before i get myself into a spot of trouble me. But of trouble knowing me. But i dont know. You tell me. What am i missing . Get in touch. Vaiews gbnews. Com. Next up, the one that i know. Lots of you are getting angry about. With getting very angry about. With me the pension conversation i me is the pension conversation i want to ask you a very simple question. Spent question. We spent a small fortune pensions , state fortune on pensions, state pensions. Is it time that we stop the triple lock or and perhaps make them means tested . Your thoughts . See you in two. Hello there. Im Michelle Dewberry till 7 00 tonight. David kurten and Joanna Williams remain alongside me when what a goodidea remain alongside me when what a good idea this is. We were just talking about wilco, of course, going into administration, 12,000 jobs potentially up at risk. He says. Why dont people organise a tick tock mass shop to save wilco fortunes . I like it. I see what you did there. Go on then you could start it. And anyone that wants to save wilco can go along and shop at a time and place that you all agree. And place that you all agree. Some of you saying that this is all because of amazon and they are the victim of the amazon effect. I suspect if you go back in time, theres lots of Small Companies perhaps lost companies that perhaps lost their because bigger their business because of Bigger Stores wilco. That stores like wilco. So maybe that is hmm. I dont isjust capitalist. Hmm. I dont know. Lets get into the know. Right. Lets get into the topic you all topic thats got you all shouting at me, shall we . The state get this, state pension. Get this, everybody. Two time, everybody. In two years time, apparently on the apparently what we spend on the state will overtake state pension will overtake education, policing and defence spend put together. That has now spend put together. That has now started a conversation about whether or not the governments so called triple lock, which basically that pensions basically means that pensions rise by average earnings inflation or 2. 5, whichever is highest. People are now saying highest. People are now saying its highest. People are now saying wsfime highest. People are now saying its time for that perhaps to scrap and or for pensions to be means tested. Lots of you are getting in touch with me quite angrily about this, peter says. Michelle well, if youre going to have this conversation, can you frame it properly as follows the state is not a state the state pension is not a state benefit. A very poor benefit. It is a very poor return for a working lifetime of contributions into a compulsory government mismanaged pension system,. I started work system, he says. I started work at 15 with nothing , worked all at 15 with nothing, worked all my way up, retired at 66, comfortably off because i grafted when i was young. I was busy supporting the then older population. What do you make to population. What do you make to it all . Yeah, absolutely. We should keep the triple lock because people whove paid into the system all their lives and have been promised that theyre going to get this amount of money and it isnt this amount of money, it isnt this amount of money, it isnt this amount of money, it isnt much money. They get on the state pension when they retire. Should get what retire. They should get what theyve promised absolute theyve been promised absolute money. Spend so money. We spend and waste so much money in this country. Tens, even hundreds of billions of things which of pounds on things which i think are completely unnecessary i like pensions change all the time, dont they . So for example, pension ages , as they example, pension ages, as they evolve, theres a lot ladies evolve, theres a lot of ladies they get often referred to as waspi women. They will feel very cheated and rightly so in my mind, in terms of some of the losses that theyve had. So things dont ever stay the same, do they . Theyre not. Pension no, theyre not. The pension age been up and up and age has been put up and up and up. Its coming up to 66 now. Its going up to 67, isnt it . And was 60 for women and 65 and it was 60 for women and 65 for men. So its increased thing and thats taking a bit of money for men. So its increased thing ancwhat s taking a bit of money for men. So its increased thing ancwhat the king a bit of money for men. So its increased thing ancwhat the government money for men. So its increased thing ancwhat the government needs for men. So its increased thing ancwhat the government needs to pay but so you think hands off the triple lock as it is . Joanna well , i think the triple lock as it is . Joanna well, i think certainly well, i think its certainly appropriate the question appropriate to ask the question and to review where were going with issues and to look with pension issues and to look at the affordability here. Yes, but your answer though . But whats your answer though . Think the real well, i think the real problem is weve got it problem is that weve got it very relates to what weve very much relates to what weve been relation been talking about in relation to got to wilkinsons. Weve got cripplingly unproductive live economy we actually need to economy and we actually need to look at how we can make the british economy more productive. Yeah, but whats your answer to a couple of to the question in a couple of years ive explained years time . Ive just explained the amount spending were the amount of spending were going doing. Its going to going to be doing. Its going to be absolutely comparison be absolutely vast in comparison to other areas. So to some of the other areas. So its a simple question. Do you think the triple lock should be scrapped . You dont. No, you dont. No, you dont. You would keep triple so you would keep the triple lock . About it being means tested . I think perhaps should alan sugan i think perhaps should alan sugar, example, my boss, sugar, for example, my old boss, be his pension . Be getting his state pension . I think perhaps there more think perhaps there is more of an argument looking at means an argument for looking at means testing. Saying we testing. Im not saying we should means should definitely do means testing, certainly looking testing, but certainly looking at i think there is a myth at that, i think there is a myth that all pensioners are wealthy and property. I and own their own property. I think the think thats absolutely not the case. Lots of pensioners are struggling financially still struggling financially and still living accommodation living in rented accommodation despite pensioners. Despite being pensioners. I think its also the case that this is something that that youve got a social contract act where people were told years where people were told 40 years ago you make these ago that if you make these payments will be looked payments you will be looked after in your old age and to then breach that social contract is a really big step to take. 1 in 5 pensioners. Apparently thats more than 2 Million People living in relative people are living in relative poverty in the uk. Thats according to pensioners in poverty data. What about means testing . Where do you stand on that . No, i dont think it should be means testing. I mean, you mentioned alan sugan i mean, you mentioned alan sugar. Paid billions or sugar. Hes paid in billions or hundreds millions, maybe in hundreds of millions, maybe in tax his life. A lot, a lot of tax in his life. A lot, a lot of money. I very much doubt he money. So i very much doubt he would to claim the would actually want to claim the state because its not state pension because its not very compared to hes very much compared to what hes got. Think it should got. But i dont think it should be means tested. If he paid in more, you should still be allowed to take the benefit out that for. That youve paid in for. I was alan i would if i was alan sugar i would definitely clear my state pension the reasons pension for all the reasons that weve just been discussing. If you you pay your dues you pay in, you pay your dues and rest of it, well, and all the rest of it, well, its your money. Youve earned it. With it, give it it. What you do with it, give it to charity or whatever, then its isnt it . Its your business, isnt it . One of my viewers here, and ive just lost name. I saw your just lost your name. I saw your comment. Thought must read comment. I thought i must read that out. Yeah, paula. That one out. Oh, yeah, paula. There paula. You said there you go. Paula. You said michelle, a country can michelle, if as a country we can afford to pay £6 million a day for migrants to be in four star hotels, afford at the hotels, if we can afford at the drop a hat to spend billions drop of a hat to spend billions for wars in ukraine, etcetera, then we can sure afford our pensions for our british people. We them, paula. We have earned them, says paula. Hean we have earned them, says paula. Hear, time hear, hear to that. Look time flies, doesnt it, when you are having i to say, having fun. I have to say, a lots of response to that pension, george, as well, saying ihave pension, george, as well, saying i have earned everything we deserve, we deserve, everything that we get. Sheila really hard sheila says its really hard to live pension before you live on the pension before you talk cutting it and means talk about cutting it and means testing it. You try and live on it and you get on. But it and see how you get on. But look, thats all weve got time for. David joanna, thank you. Thank for your company as thank you for your company as well.
