Ray addison. Good afternoon. One minute past midday and we start with that breaking news youve been heanng that breaking news youve been hearing in the last few moments. The first migrants have now boarded the bibby stockholm in dorset. Its not yet known dorset. Its not yet known exactly how many Asylum Seekers have moved into the controversial barge facility as the migrants arrived at the entrance to Portland Port. Demonstrators were assembled to protest against its location. Now for those of you watching on tv, this is live footage of the bibby stockholm and the gangway which the men will have used to enter the vessel. Of course, there arrival follows delays caused by health and safety concerns, including the Firefighters Union warn that the barge is a potential death trap. Safeguarding minister sarah dines told us it is justified. Despite those concerns. Despite those concerns. Tons thing like this where a large groups of migrants are congregated is never popular , congregated is never popular, which is why we have to stop the crisis in the channel. But we cant do that by having the pull factors of having Wonderful Hotels being used for Illegal Migrants whove travelled through several safe countries to get here. Lets not forget that. Well Shadow International trade secretary Nick Thomas Symonds does not agree. Thomas symonds does not agree. He told us how labour would stop the small boat arrivals. Stop the small boat arrivals. What we will be doing is driving down that asylum backlog. Well do that firstly by using. The £140 million the by using. The £140 million the is currently spent on rwanda plan, which has sent more home secretaries to rwanda than people to actually have a cross border policing unit to try and bust the model of the people smuggling gangs so that fewer people end up in the English Channel on that dangerous crossing in the first place. Meanwhile, multiple reports suggest that the government is considering plans to house people who arrive in the uk by unauthorised means on Ascension Island and the british overseas territory is located over 4000 miles away in the atlantic ocean. It currently houses two military bases and has a population of around 800 non permanent residents. The non permanent residents. The proposals are seen as a possible plan b if the governments rwanda scheme fails. Well, from rwanda scheme fails. Well, from next year, fines will triple for businesses and landlords who knowingly support Illegal Migrants coming into the country under new government plans, bosses who employ Asylum Seekers could face fines of up to £60,000 per breach. The Prime Minister also saying hes increased raids by police raids by 50 to clamp down on illegal workers , as the home office workers, as the home office warns that illegal working and renting are significant pull factors for those Channel Crossings connected devices such as Baby Monitors and Smart Speakers are increasingly being used to survey, harass and control victims of Domestic Abuse. Control victims of Domestic Abuse. Thats according to mps abuse. Thats according to mps citing data from the Charity Refuge. They warn that its likely to become even more prevalent in the future. And prevalent in the future. And theyre now urging the government to make a commitment to tackle the issue of tech abuse. New government figures show that there are on average nine connected devices in every uk household. Home owners saw uk household. Home owners saw the average value of their property fall by nearly £1,000 between june and july of this yean between june and july of this year, according to halifax , year, according to halifax, values fell by 0. 3 for around £285,000. Now this marks the fourth monthly decline in a row. Meanwhile, annually, house pnces meanwhile, annually, house prices have dropped by 2. 4. Scientists have started developing new vaccines as an insurance against future pandemics. The work is being carried out at the governments high security porton down laboratory in wiltshire. Theyve laboratory in wiltshire. Theyve drawn up a list of animal viruses which are capable of infecting humans and could potentially spread around the world. Professor Dame Jenny Harries , chief exec of the uk harries, chief exec of the uk health and security agency, says theyve learned lessons from covid, the laboratories here its 2800m2 of investment through the vaccine taskforce through the vaccine taskforce through the vaccine taskforce through the uk government during covid. And so what were trying to do now is capture that really excellent work from covid and make sure were using that as we go forward for any new pandemic threats. Threats. The uk is set to have a brand new Transatlantic Airline which promises lower fares. Now, promises lower fares. Now, Global Airlines aims to start operating between gatwick and new york by the middle of next yean new york by the middle of next year, and it will launch flights to la. The chief exec says to la. And finally, the lionesses have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the womens world cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over nigeria. England scored four nigeria. England scored four goals, while nigeria netted only two following the 123 minute match. Chloe kelly scored the winning goal following other successful shots from beth england and rachel daly and alex greenwood. Theyll now face greenwood. Theyll now face either jamaica or colombia in eitherjamaica or colombia in the quarterfinals on saturday. This is gb news across the uk on tv in your car, on Digital Radio and on your Smart Speaker by saying play gb news. Now lets get back to emily and. Pip get back to emily and. Pip welcome back to the live desk. In the last few minutes, the government has confirmed the first Asylum Seekers have boarded the bibby stockholm barge in dorset. They arrived on buses within the last hour. More buses within the last hour. More are expected this week , though are expected this week, though its a little unclear as to whether the full 500 will be on board by the weekend. Yes, at the same time, theres talk of a rwanda back up plan. Migrants could reportedly be sent to the extremely remote Ascension Island, which is 4000 miles away from the uk and home to only around 800 people. Lets get some more reaction and get the latest on all of this by crossing live to portland in dorset, our Homeland Security editor mark white is there. Mark what can you tell us then about the Asylum Seekers that we understand are now on board this barge. 7 board this barge . Yeah, they arrived about an hour and a half ago, bus load , hour and a half ago, bus load, just a few of them so far theres a number of buses that will come throughout today. We believe that the Asylum Seekers have come from hotels in the bournemouth area and in total 50 will come today and then others will come today and then others will come today and then others will come over the weeks and months ahead. I can clear up one thing you were saying in the introduction there. Unclear if all 500 would be here by the weekend. Thats not going to happen. Weekend. Thats not going to happen. The Home Office Minister happen. The Home Office Minister sarah dines. I think , misspoke sarah dines. I think, misspoke or misheard when she was interviewed on this this morning talking about the final aspiration for 500. But not that they would be here by this weekend. This is always is was planned to be a process that would be over weeks and months to get up to that 500 incremental to ensure that they can get them housed and functioning within the barge safely. Remember of course, there is all of the concerns that have been raised about the fire safety guidelines within the barge and perhaps at 500 is just too much for this barge to cope with that. Previous numbers were about half that volume within the barge itself. So lets see what happens in the weeks ahead, whether the home Office Actually revise eases the number downwards. But at the moment, at least, they are still seeing that its their intention to get up to 500 people. On the bbcs stockholm, an interestingly clearly there is a drive by the government on the issue of illegal migration, those coming across in small boats and by other means. Those coming across in small boats and by other means. Weve boats and by other means. Weve had the Prime Minister, rishi sunak , putting out a tweet on sunak, putting out a tweet on social media this morning in which he was talking about five point plan to stop the boats. So remember , initially, of course, remember, initially, of course, there was the government five point pledge. Well, now there is point pledge. Well, now there is a five point pledge within a five point pledge. Lets have a listen to what he said in that social media post. First, im bringing in new laws that will mean if you come to the uk illegally, you cant stay no matter how hard you try i second, ive secured a deal with france that will help stop the boats at source before they cross the channel. Ive also negotiated a deal with albania which has already helped us bnng which has already helped us bring down crossings from there. By bring down crossings from there. By 90. Third, ive increased raids by 50 to clamp down on illegal workers. Fourth, im illegal workers. Fourth, im ending the farce of Illegal Migrants being put up in hotels by the taxpayer. The fifth. Im by the taxpayer. The fifth. Im ensuring that the only way to come to the uk for asylum will be through safe and legal routes when they get here. So dynamic video there from the Prime Minister. I think thats evidence. If evidence were needed , were pushing ever were needed, were pushing ever closer to that general election expected next year. Some time expected next year. Some time labour again also talking about this issue this morning, although now being somewhat opaque when it comes to whether they would actually still keep they would actually still keep the bibby stockholm barge and indeed the ministry of defence bases as locations to house these Asylum Seekers in large groups. Groups. Mark, i mean a lot of people watching and listening to you with your report, there will be scratching their heads and wondering how on earth it can be this difficult to get 500 males onto to a barge. I mean currently we some days we have 500 people crossing the channel in one day. How can it be this difficult . What are the obstacles is and how does this reflect on the government . Reflect on the government . Yeah, i mean , in terms of the yeah, i mean, in terms of the process that theyve been going through, clearly they purchased the bibby stockholm barge and it was taken to initially to falmouth to be refurbished. So thatis falmouth to be refurbished. So that is what was happening over a number of months to bring it up to spec to ensure that it was actually fit for accommodating twice the number of people that would normally accommodate that 500 odd and putting all of the facilities , houses, the facilities, houses, the amenities, the wrap around facilities within the barge as well. So the barge has a fully functioning restaurant in there that can house a couple of hundred people at a time. Um, theres a tv room with about eight comfy sofas. Theres a eight comfy sofas. Theres a gym, theres a computer room with a dozen desks. Theres with a dozen desks. Theres wi fi throughout the barge. Theres two recreation areas within the barge, sort of outside areas in the central portion of the barge where they can play sports or just sit about if they want. And theres about if they want. And theres another area just outside and the barge itself just on the quay side that was will be given over for recreation purposes as well. So theres plenty for the well. So theres plenty for the migrants to do when they arrive here. There was quite a bit for the home office and its contract to do in bringing it up to spec and refurbishing it to make it habitable for these Asylum Seekers and now theyre here. Of course we have the issue of what to do in terms of bringing it in up to the fire service regulations. There was the regulations. There was the concern about 500 being on the fact that the corridors are relatively narrow within the barge as well. So that is still an ongoing issue. But at least theyve got the first few on board. Just want to ask you, mark, because you did have this this full guided tour. And we know that the critics are saying its inhumane. Would you stay on the barge a few days . Barge for a few days . I mean, if i had to , it i mean, if i had to, it certainly wouldnt be an issue to do that. I think its just a nonsense to claim that the conditions are inhumane. They are clearly not the cabins. I would say , are similar to the would say, are similar to the kind of standard of cabin you would get in a sort of standard class cabin on a cruise ship. There theres two bunk beds in there. But theyre still reasonably roomy. They all have en suite bathrooms. And theres en suite bathrooms. And theres also facilities for storing their personal belongings and clothing. Theres a desk, clothing. Theres a desk, theres a television in thats in all of the cabins as well. In all of the cabins as well. Okay. That is not akin to prison accommodation in. Okay. Mark, youve sold it very well, though. Plenty of people would disagree. Thank you for that. Well come back to you for that. Well come back to you very soon. Again. Now lets go to our south west of england. Reporter jeff moody, whos also in portland. Jeff, just explain where you are and the reaction that you are getting so far from locals. Locals. Well, im out at the gates of Portland Port where about an hour ago, the first of the buses arrived. We werent sure that arrived. We werent sure that there was anybody actually on that bus at the time. We looked at the one the side that i could see. There wasnt a single soul, but were now hearing that there were some Asylum Seekers on it. Were some Asylum Seekers on it. Everybody is looking at it. I dont know whether sas can show you, but people are looking out of their windows, waving and watching whats going on there is everybody sort of looking out of their doors, observing whats happening up here. Weve got the stand up to racism group that are welcoming the Asylum Seekers. Theres a trolley there full of flowers. Theyre giving full of flowers. Theyre giving them flowers and all of the signs that say refugees welcome care for refugees and care for portland. To the other side in portland. To the other side in this debate, these are the ones that have been providing the welcome packs for people. The other side of the debate, the no to the barge brigade. Theyve chosen to stay away this morning. Theyve chosen, they believe that it wouldnt be appropriate for them to come down here and protest. Now theyre beef, they say is with dorset council. Their beef is with the home office. And their beef in office. And their beef in particular is with Portland Port that they opened without any form of consult nation. Theyre very clear that their beef is not with the Asylum Seekers themselves and they feel it would be inappropriate to have a big demonstration. Now theyre prepared to step aside if you wish to let the people that are welcoming them here have their say so at least that it gets off to a good note. So as i said, we had one lot about an hour ago, we are expecting another busload any second now. Theres all sorts of reports going around as to when that will arrive. Theres a news helicopter thats been circling overhead for quite some. Um, weve heard a some time. Um, weve heard a source that says that the that at the moment its in weymouth and weymouth is about five ten minutes away. So it should be imminent. You never know. Imminent. But you never know. Theres people from all sorts of windows looking out and reporting to each other on social media theyve seen a social media that theyve seen a bus here, there and bus from here, there and everywhere. Moment we everywhere. So at the moment we dont particularly which dont particularly know which one the on one will have the migrants on board, you know as board, but well let you know as soon we do. Soon as we do. Thank you very much indeed. Jeff moody who is in jeff moody there, who is in portland on local portland reporting on local opposition really to this barge. And interesting and its quite interesting because saying because youve had people saying that barge totally that this barge is totally inhumane and that its not fit for Asylum Seekers , that its a for Asylum Seekers, that its a prison on water, that it could be grenfell on sea and then of course, you have others who dont want it there for very different reasons. So its well see what happens and what were going to end. Is it. No. And what well also be talking about is plan b if this rwanda scheme doesnt work, the government loses in the Supreme Court, there are plans potentially to send people 4000 miles away to a Ascension Island , although the Prime Ministers official spokesman today says he will not comment on that speculation at the moment. Yes, i mean, it is completely remote, isnt it . Its in the middle of nowhere. Well, the ocean anyway, well be looking at that shortly. At that shortly. But thousands of scouts but now thousands of scouts at an International Event in south korea are being evacuated from campsite after being hit from a campsite after being hit with extreme heat. Temperatures reached 35 degrees at the world Scout Jamboree , where more than 40,000 jamboree, where more than 40,000 scouts from across the world have gathered for the 12 day event. Uk scouts were moved to hotels in the capital seoul on saturday, and south korean officials have now ordered all participants to leave as a typhoon threatens to sweep across the area. The organisations chief executive, matt hyde, says the uk scouts will face an impact on its activities for up to five years after spending 1 million on the evacuation. Heres what on the evacuation. Heres what he had to say. We were particularly concerned about sanitation in and the cleanliness of toilets that were causing severe concerns from us from a health and safety point of view. In addition to that , we were in addition to that, we were worried about food and those with dietary requirements in particular, and the amount of food that was available. We were concerned also about the heat. Its punishingly here in its punishingly hot here in korea. Its unprecedented korea. Its an unprecedented heatwave. But we were concerned heatwave. But we were concerned about the heat relief measures that being put place. That were being put in place. And finally, we were concerned about medical services and those four areas gave us concerns about whether young people and aduu about whether young people and Adult Volunteers were safe. And Adult Volunteers were safe. And thats why weve relocated. Did thats why weve relocated. Did the jamboree , our jamboree the jamboree, our jamboree journey to here in seoul, we are disappointed in the organisers and the organisation and we do feel let down. Oh dear , no, it is such oh dear, no, it is such a shame. Id never heard of a Scout Jamboree to be honest though. But there you go. Thats what the news is for. It was supposed to be lots of fun. It very clearly wasnt. It very clearly wasnt. Very clearly wasnt. But coming up, a council in south london has under fire by london has come under fire by introducing parking introducing higher Parking Charges who use cash. Charges for people who use cash. Thats why gb news very own thats why gb news is very own dont campaigners. Dont kill cash campaigners. More important tonight than even eve r. E e well be talking about that very first, though, very shortly. First, though, heres all important heres that all important weather , that warm Weather Forecast, that warm feeling inside from boxt boilers. Proud sponsors of weather on. Gb news alex deakin here with your latest weather update from the met office four gb news a few showers scattered about today, but most places will have a fine monday. The winds light but a sunshine at times coming through. We will see a bit of cloud and rain coming in across the south tonight and tomorrow from weather feature. But from this weather feature. But generally, a little ridge of High Pressure most of High Pressure bringing most of fine the main fine day today. The main exception well, fine day today. The main exc are on well, fine day today. The main exc are going well, fine day today. The main exc are going to well, fine day today. The main exc are going to see well, fine day today. The main exc are going to see scattering we are going to see a scattering of showers. Come and go of showers. Theyll come and go through could some through the day, could see some heavier ones the evening. Heavier ones during the evening. The odd shower over northern england. But most of england, wales, some wales, Northern Ireland dry some cloud, well see a bit cloud, yes, but well see a bit of lifting of sunshine at times, lifting the into the low the temperatures into the low 20s maybe 22, 23 across the south east. Places , though south east. Most places, though only high teens yet only in the high teens yet again. And the cloud will be thickening of thickening in the south west of england. That is going to push into wales as well. So turning quite cloudy here through the evening. Odd light evening. Again, the odd light shower really, and then some heavier showers northern heavier showers for Northern Ireland scotland , but they ireland and scotland, but they should quite should tend to fade quite quickly through evening. So quickly through this evening. So many places across north many places across the north having a clear night, actually turning quite temperatures turning quite cool. Temperatures down into single figures in rural cloud rural spots. But the cloud and the outbreaks rain making for the outbreaks of rain making for a drizzly start in a grey, damp, drizzly start in south wales and south west england. The coast a bit england. Most ireland, southern scotland. Most places bright with places here dry and bright with sunny just few showers sunny spells. Just a few showers across the far north. And again, temperatures mostly in the high teens that warm feeling inside from boxt boilers proud sponsors of weather on gb news. Welcome back to the live desk. So a council in south london has come under fire. Theyve introduced higher Parking Charges for people who use cash rather than their mobile app. The council in question is Sutton Council and they say its due to the rising cost of providing the machines with an increasing councils increasing number of councils looking fully to a looking to shift fully to a digital system. Digital system. Paul hawkins is in Sutton Forest this morning. Paul, let me get this straight then. I am going to pay more by using a few coins to park than if i use my phone. In coins to park than if i use my phone. In fact, 50 more. Thats absolutely crazy, isnt it . Absolutely crazy, isnt it . Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I dont know if its as much as 50. Its basically £3 an hour. If you park in this car park or any of the car parks in, in the london borough of sutton , its london borough of sutton, its for an hour. Its £3. Its £2. If you use the app. So about £6 for a day. £5, 20 is 50 if you use the app and so is that 50 more. Okay, youre better than me. All matters better than mine. Then fair enough. Then fair enough. And thats me saying that as well. I, i stand corrected. But i, i stand corrected. But look, its more its significantly more. And groups like the rac have called it discriminatory. The government say that it alludes to digital exclusion. Thats the phrase michael gove used the cabinet minister responsible , all for minister responsible, all for the policy thats put in place by local authorities back in april. So weve been speaking to people here and theyve been telling us what they think. Some of them, by the way, didnt even know about the difference in the charges. Is displayed. There charges. It is displayed. There are issues around that. Are some issues around that. Ill come to that in just a moment. But this is what people have been telling us this morning, people because none of them got phones and apps. Them have got phones and apps. Going the old people are going to pay the old people are going to pay the fashioned way, pay cash the Old Fashioned way, so theyre paying more people that afford like that cant afford it, like the apps. To park here, apps. If they want to park here, theyre going to pay more. Then if a young person could just pick their phone and go on pick up their phone and go on the if i come here, i just the app, if i come here, i just want do things very quickly. Want to do things very quickly. To a couple of yeah, go to a couple of shops, home. Dont want to shops, go home. I dont want to come to download come here, have to download the app. What about what about using the phone thats the phone line thats here. Here. So you can get here. So you can so you can get a discounted rate there if you phoneit a discounted rate there if you phone it up and use your card. Oh thats big writing oh thats thats big writing isnt it. Dont really carry cash. I dont really carry cash. I dont really carry cash. Yeah. So i cant and i dont want walk the station want to walk to the pay station with toddler. I like sounds with my toddler. I like sounds lazy, its just way more lazy, but its just way more convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To pay app convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To pay app. So there , pay via your app. So there, theres a good example of what were looking at, which that were looking at, which is that for groups, for more for older groups, for the more vulnerable, can be trickier vulnerable, it can be trickier to use, but there are still many people do find convenient i i i spoke to the london borough of sutton, to barry lewis , whos of sutton, to barry lewis, whos the cabinet member responsible for issues like parking. He told me that, look, it costs us a lot of money to maintain these machines and we have to send two people to come and pick up the cash. Costs incurred cash. There are costs incurred with we either absorb with that. We either absorb those costs and then pass on those costs and then pass on those maybe through local those costs, maybe through local taxes, of thing. Or we taxes, that kind of thing. Or we pass costs of carrying pass on the costs of carrying cash. Pass on the costs of carrying cash. And look, you use the cash. And look, when you use the app cash. And look, when you use the app, its convenient app, its more convenient and you notifications top of you get notifications on top of that. Can use a phone that. People can use a phone number and phone up with their card. Out to him card. Now i pointed out to him that have been pointing card. Now i pointed out to him thatissues have been pointing card. Now i pointed out to him thatissues withye been pointing card. Now i pointed out to him thatissues with the zen pointing card. Now i pointed out to him thatissues with the signage ting card. Now i pointed out to him thatissues with the signage this out issues with the signage this morning. Certainly the way the costs displayed isnt costs are displayed isnt entirely clear that theres a two system of pricing. And two tier system of pricing. And also that phone number i referred to, its in tiny font around the of the parking around the back of the parking metre he said, to be fair to metre and he said, to be fair to him, we understand him, look, we understand that were taking board. Were taking that on board. Weve doing this for weve only been doing this for two will away and two months. We will go away and we review the signage and we will review the signage and make, know, he agrees that make, you know, he agrees that there a case displaying there is a case for displaying there is a case for displaying the difference in the charges and number prominently. You much indeed, thank you very much indeed, paul thank you very much indeed, paul. Theyre bringing this highlighting this story. It really quite really does seem quite discriminatory, thats for sure. Thank paul thank you very much, paul hawkins there, national reporter. Yeah, im actually very glad weve because weve talked about this because ive remembered that ive just remembered that i havent paid for my parking today. No. Well, better today. Oh, no. Well, you better go that. Do you have an go and do that. Do you have an app go and do that. Do you have an app to do this bit . Well, will. I know because i was thinking that the apps people say theyre more convenient, theyre more easy but theyre really easy to use, but theyre really not to ive not that easy to use. Ive struggled before and theres a different for different different app for different parking places also. Can do what i have also, you can do what i have just done and actually park your car so much of rush that car being so much of a rush that you actually forget to use the app. Well, lets hope youre not cramped. I am now probably going to get fined, which is just typical and be the first and it wouldnt be the first time. Do see, its time. Well, if you do see, its much if you do see pips much better if you do see pips car being clamped, please tell them to hang on a few minutes so she the and she can download the app and sort quickly. Sort it out quickly. Have brain memory like i have a brain memory like a sieve. But remember all this talk and this story that weve just talked about with paul . It feeds into very own kill into our very own dont kill cash campaign. Are less than cash campaign. We are less than 5000 off reaching 5000 signatures off reaching the magical million magical quarter of a million sign up thats pretty sign up mark. Thats pretty impressive. We for impressive. It is. As we ask for the government to agree to preserving 2050. Preserving cash until 2050. Once we reach that Promised Land of 250,000 signatures, we want to push the government to make the pledge as soon as possible. Pledge as soon as possible. We do indeed. But coming up, labours their stance labours revealed their stance on new oil licences. Keir starmer has made clear on his position has he really . After controversial donations scandal . Well find out what exactly hes had to say. Yeah, but that is all still to come now, though, roundup to come now, though, a roundup of latest news of all your latest News Headlines. Heres. Demonstrators were assembled to protest against the barges location. Against the barges location. Now for those watching on tv should be able to see live footage now of the bibby stockholm and the gangway which the men must have used to enter the men must have used to enter the vessel. Arrival, of the vessel. Their arrival, of course , following delays caused course, following delays caused by health and safety concerns, including the Firefighters Union warns that the barge is a potential death trap. Well, potential death trap. Well, meanwhile, multiple reports suggest the government is considering plans to house people who arrive in the uk by unauthorised means. On Ascension Island in the british overseas territory is located over 4000 miles away in the atlantic ocean, currently houses two military bases and has a population of around 800 people. The proposals are a possible plan b if the governments rwanda scheme fails , as downing rwanda scheme fails, as downing street official said, its confident it will win the Upcoming Court case and the kigali deal remains the governments focus. Well, from governments focus. Well, from next year , fines will triple for next year, fines will triple for businesses and landlords who knowingly support Illegal Migrants coming into the country under new government plans. Under new government plans. Bosses who employ Asylum Seekers could face fines of up to £60,000 per breach. The pm also says hes increased police raids by 50 to help clamp down on illegal workers. And great news, illegal workers. And great news, the lionesses have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the womens world cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over nigeria. England scoring four goals, while nigeria netted only two following the 123 minute match. Chloe kelly scored the winner following other successful shots from beth england. Labour leader keir starmer has called Just Stop Oils demands as contained bazball as he attempts to distance himself from the eco group. Group. Yes, he said, labour would not tear up the 100 new drilling licences that the Prime Minister plans to grant. Adding to that, he said he would only ban the granting of new licences to explore oil and gas fields in the hes seeking to explore oil and gas fields in the businessesies seeking to explore oil and gas fields in the businesses certainty. 1g to give businesses certainty. Certainty criticised their demands to simply turn off the taps. Well, joining us now is our Political Correspondent olivia utley. Good afternoon, olivia. Utley. Good afternoon, olivia. I think you are at oh, yes, you are there you are at abingdon green at westminster. Good to see you in sunshine. Is this see you in the sunshine. Is this another u turn then, from sir keir starmer . Keir starmer . Well, he never actually said that he would cease all oil and gas drilling in the north sea, but it is a little bit of a sort of volte face compared to what his shadow ministers have been saying over the last couple of weeks. Weve had mixed messages from them over whether they would whether labour would would over whether labour would plan to cease all oil and gas drilling as Extinction Rebellion and just off oil have been asking for or simply to asking for or simply refuse to grant any new licences to oil and gas providers. Now keir starmer has said that he would not revoke the 100 new oil and gas licences that rishi sunak has offered , but he wouldnt has offered, but he wouldnt allow any more new oil and gas licences to be granted. It does feel over the last few weeks as though weve been seeing the leader of the opposition and the Prime Minister sort of fall over each in an attempt to look each other in an attempt to look less green than i think the uxbndge less green than i think the uxbridge by election was a bit of a wake up call to both main parties that although in focus groups and polling , people might groups and polling, people might say that they are Pro Environmental policies when push comes to shove and the money in their pocket is actually at risk. So, for example, with the ulez charge, then people are far less green than they would indicate that they are in focus groups and polls. So both the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition have been rowing back a little bit and it seems as though this one of those though this is one of those issues where rishi sunak is hoping some sort of hoping he can get some sort of clear blue water between himself and keir starmer. A bit of a wedge if he can be the one wedge issue if he can be the one whos standing for motorists, whos standing up for motorists, whos standing up for motorists, whos a sort of whos standing up for a sort of slow transition zero, slow transition to net zero, standing businesses who standing up for businesses who are on oil and gas . He are reliant on oil and gas . He thinks that be a vote thinks that will be a vote winner and starmer is winner and keir starmer is clearly trying to do clearly now trying to do everything that he can to show that he isnt sort of green that he isnt the sort of green lobbyist some people would lobbyist that some people would like to think that he is. And the fact that labour have accepted £1. 5 million in donation from dale vince, an entrepreneur who also backs Just Stop Oil is a bit of a problem for the leader of the opposition at the moment. Now olivia, im not sure if this is going to wash with our with our viewers and listeners. It does seem to me that keir starmer is just not being brave or bold enough to actually say what priority is when it what his priority is when it comes to north sea oil and gas. Okay well let the conservatives have these licences and then have these new licences and then we wont bother revoking them. So how passionately do you care about Carbon Emissions then . About Carbon Emissions then . Its all rather confusing. Its all rather confusing. It does feel a little bit as though keir starmer is sitting on the fence on this one. Hes trying to present labour as having a nuanced point of view that they are not the party of oil and gas, but nor do they subscribe to the just off oil line that all licences should be revoked immediately. In fact , he revoked immediately. In fact, he called that contemptible. But as called that contemptible. But as you say, emily, it might seem to viewers and listeners at home and to the general public on the whole that labour doesnt have a nuanced line. It has no line at nuanced line. It has no line at all on this issue. So this could end up being kind of low hanging fruit for the Prime Minister, particularly when keir starmer is really under pressure from both sides at the moment. Hes got the ordinary voting public, those potential swing voters in those potential swing voters in those all important seats in the south of england, former tory voters who he is hoping will turn to labour, they might be more persuaded to vote for a Prime Minister to vote for a for a politician who who isnt keen to rush the transition to net zero. But on the other hand, there are plenty of labour members who tend to be on the left of the party who will be very important to keir starmer when it comes to campaigning. He needs on the who needs boots on the ground who very much do subscribe to the Just Stop Oil line that licences should be revoked as soon as possible. So the labour leader is pressure from both is under pressure from both sides and is trying to tread a bit a tightrope here. Lets bit of a tightrope here. Lets see how he does over the next few weeks. Olivia there is also a warning though for rishi sunak from colleagues environment from his colleagues environment secretary therese coffey, no less , who has said that less, who has said that abandoning green policies could actually cost the conservatives the next general election. So maybe she wants the Prime Minister to row back a little. Minister to row back a little. Well, i think whats happening a bit at the moment is both parties cant quite work out how the public feel about green policies in general because , as i say, when we look because, as i say, when we look at the polling, it suggests that people are very, very pro transitioning to net zero over and over again. The vast majority of the general public say that they like net zero policies. But i think that politicians are now worrying that when actually comes to that when it actually comes to an theyll be less an election, theyll be less concerned about abstract Environmental Issues and more concern about the money in their pocket. So i think what were seeing at the moment is all politicians from both sides treading ground carefully, treading the ground carefully, putting new policies out putting some new policies out there to see how they land and generally kind of feeling their way. I think generally kind of feeling their way. I think in generally kind of feeling their way. I think in a generally kind of feeling their way. I think in a few generally kind of feeling their way. I think in a few weeks way. I think in a few weeks itll probably be a little bit clearer where the general public lies. And as a result, itll be clearer where our politicians lie. And olivia, just very quickly, just to finish, thank you for joining quickly, just to finish, thank you forjoining us quickly, just to finish, thank you for joining us there from westminster. Of course , suella westminster. Of course, Suella Braverman. I think it was. And also grant shapps , both members also grant shapps, both members of the conservative cabinet and they wrote these public letters calling on keir starmer to essentially sack anyone in his shadow cabinet who was supportive of Just Stop Oil, presumably. Is this maybe a presumably. Is this maybe a reaction to some of that pressure or do you think its more just hes looking at Public Opinion polling and thinking, i need to i need to be a bit careful on this one, not say too much. Much. I reckon its a its a little bit of a mixture. I think hes certainly looking at public polling at the moment and worrying that the green agenda might not be at the top of peoples priority in the peoples priority list in the middle cost living middle of a cost of living crisis. But i think keir starmer is also well aware that this link between Just Stop Oil who are unpopular with link between Just Stop Oil who are general unpopular with link between Just Stop Oil who are general publicypular with link between Just Stop Oil who are general public andir with link between Just Stop Oil who are general public and labour the general public and labour has become sort of low hanging fruit for the conservatives. If the secretary , he can write the home secretary, he can write a letter, an open letter criticising keir starmer for this, then she knows and he knows that there is sort of pubuc knows that there is sort of public traction involved in this. So hes got to be really careful what he does at the moment and i think well see a lot more of this treading the ground very lightly, throwing policies out there, briefing newspapers, briefing tv channels, where things channels, seeing where things land and making policies as land and making his policies as a result of those inquisitions, as it were. As it were. Its going to be a long, old slog for all the parties. And its all a bit of a mess, isnt it . Yes, but thank you very much, olivia, for all your analysis there. Thank you very much there. Thank you very much indeed. There. Thank you very much indeed. So moving on, a pub indeed. So moving on, a pub landlord has accused Animal Rights group peta of wokery after they demanded he change the name of his boozer. Mike newton, the owner of the old bulldog, revealed hed received a letter from the Animal Welfare charity urging him to change the name to the old mutt because the current name encourages people to buy sickness prone breeds and Midlands Reporter will hollis explains all a proper british boozer with a proper british name. Name. The old bulldog , a name the old bulldog, a name thats now been splashed across the National News. And all because of this bulldog atticus , mike and his wife laurie rescued him. If you look closely into his mouth. Come on, sweetie. You can mouth. Come on, sweetie. You can see that his teeth have been ground down with an angle gnnden ground down with an angle grinder, which is usually a sign that he was a bait dog in the dogfighting. When mike bought the sea lion, a humble corner pub in stoke on trent, he fancied a new name and thought atticus breed was perfect. But not everyone agrees. But not everyone agrees. Animal rights group peta reckon that it glorifies brachycephalic breeds of dog like bulldog dogs and pugs that develop breathing difficulties and other Health Issues because of their squashed snouts and skull shape. They sent mike a letter telling him to scrap the name. This letter on my phone and essentially it says what we want to do is to get rid of the name the old bulldog, replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old mutt. Well, i was really quite cross about it because i felt that it was is intrusive. It was patronising, and it was also an attack on a cherished national symbol, the bulldog, which we love in this country. It was an attack on Small Business. Peta, which stands for people for the ethical treatment of animals, says that promotes breeds with breathing impairment. Ice normalises their suffering and encourages others to get them. Them. The name of a pub is not going to influence anyone in in what dog they choose to buy. And that was pretty much their reasoning. Reasoning. They say theyd even pay to help rename the pub to the old mutt , which they help rename the pub to the old mutt, which they think will go down better with locals. Down better with locals. Why should i . Animal rights get involved in it . Its not nothing to do with them. What a name of a pub is. People are getting have the dog if they want the dog, if you love the breed of the dog, it was called the sea lion before. So did that encourage people keep sea lions . No, mike, whos keep sea lions . No, mike, whos a conservative parliamentary candidate , says the name is candidate, says the name is staying. Staying. Well, its obviously a woke agenda globally on many fronts, isnt but you know, here isnt there . But you know, here in the midlands, then theyve met because were not met the match because were not changing the name of the pub. Changing the name of the pub. You know, we love our bulldogs and backing down on and were not backing down on this. This. The m this. The pub was renamed the stoke pub was renamed once , doing it twice. Well, that once, doing it twice. Well, that would be barking mad now dog nice pub will hollis gb news in stoke on trent. Stoke on trent. I mean i think youve got to pick your battles, havent you . Because. Yes. Bulldog can be a very unhealthy breed and that is down to the breeding and the overbreeding. Im not sure people going to the pub are going to see the sign and its going to see the sign and its going to see the sign and its going to trigger conversation going to trigger a conversation about the overbreeding or the health no i think these Health Issues. No i think these animal need to Animal Rights activists need to stop small stuff stop sweating the small stuff personally, bad personally, although is it bad if say, its not the if i say, well, its not the name, its not small stuff, emily, because there is an inherently a problem with this breed. Okay, okay, okay. But i actually do prefer the name the okay, okay, okay. But i acthutt,io prefer the name the okay, okay, okay. But i acthutt, whicher the name the okay, okay, okay. But i acthutt, which isthe name the okay, okay, okay. But i acthutt, which is ae name the okay, okay, okay. But i acthutt, which is a bitame the old mutt, which is a bit awkward. Anyway, well come awkward. But anyway, well come back to it. Okay. Okay. Its that time of the year when members of parliament are returning their returning to their constituencies summer constituencies for summer recess, and its no different for our very own jacob rees mogg, conservative mp rees mogg, the conservative mp for somerset. Because the lionesses have beaten nigeria in their last 16 match today, taking them through to the quarterfinals, the match finish nil nil after extra time despite lauren james getting sent off before england won the penalty shootout. That was very dramatic indeed. So joining us now to dissect the match is former footballer jason cundy. Thank you very much jason cundy. Thank you very much indeed, jason , for joining me. Indeed, jason, for joining me. It looked i didnt get to watch the but it looked quite the match, but it looked quite dramatic was dramatic. Dramatic like it was dramatic. I mean, anything going to penalties is dramatic there. The red card , it pretty much had red card, it pretty much had everything. In all honesty, how red card, it pretty much had everythididnt all honesty, how red card, it pretty much had everythididnt win honesty, how red card, it pretty much had everythididnt win theesty, how red card, it pretty much had everythididnt win the game ow red card, it pretty much had everythididnt win the game over nigeria didnt win the game over the minutes. I dont quite the 90 minutes. I dont quite know they were the better side. I think it was one of englands poorest performances, but somehow wiegman managed somehow Sarina Wiegman managed to the result. Thats to get the result. Thats required, and thats what its like at tournaments. Its about getting the result, finding a way. When england went way. And even when england went down to ten men, i felt that nigeria lacked a little bit of guile, a little bit of knowhow , guile, a little bit of knowhow, a naivety. They couldnt a bit of naivety. They couldnt make man count. Make their extra man count. Sanna make their extra man count. Sarina wiegman changed the shape of team and actually of the team and actually nigeria, even though theyre more the ball, couldnt more of the ball, couldnt really england yeah really break england down. Yeah i mean, england would have been the favourites to win this easily , wouldnt they . Easily, wouldnt they . Why did they make such hard work of it . Work of it . Well, its partly to down the way tactically nigeria set up lauren james has been a massive star and she got a lot of attention off the pitch and on the pitch. I thought they dealt with her very well. I think possibly nigeria surprised us a little bit about how fit they were, how strong they were and how good they were. I mean, you know, not an aficionado on know, im not an aficionado on nigerian womens football, but ive you, they were ive got to tell you, they were the side. You they the better side. You know, they were away with one were england got away with one today. And Sarina Wiegman will know red card was a know it. The red card was a definite red card. Lauren will definite red card. Lauren will learn that. Shes still learn from that. Shes still very young, that will be very young, so that will be something shell look back very young, so that will be soratthing shell look back very young, so that will be sorat the; shell look back very young, so that will be sorat the end shell look back very young, so that will be sorat the end ofhell look back very young, so that will be sorat the end of herl look back very young, so that will be sorat the end of her careerback very young, so that will be sorat the end of her career and on at the end of her career and say, got to learn from say, ive got to learn from that. Remember David Beckham getting sent against getting sent off against argentina . Similar kind of scenario, think over the scenario, but i think over the 90 minutes, nigeria couldnt quite when went to quite believe it when it went to extra time, but they never made that extra woman count in that crucial minutes. Crucial 30 minutes. Jason, you just tell us jason, can you just tell us exactly happened there exactly what happened there with lauren james . Exactly what happened there with laure mean,3s . Exactly what happened there with laure mean, the exactly what happened there with lauremean, the pictures exactly what happened there with laure mean, the pictures show her i mean, the pictures show her stamping thing the back of stamping thing on the back of this nigerian player. What was what was the context there . What was the context there . Well, lucy, it was the young lady that she got trampled on, essentially had a really good game. She was one of the standout players for nigeria. Standout players for nigeria. And i the fact that lauren and i think the fact that lauren didnt have as much of the ball, the levels wasnt the performance levels wasnt what expected , not just of what she expected, not just of herself, collectively. And herself, but collectively. And i think was of think it was a bit of frustration. And she lost the ball as hes just made sure that she couldnt get past her. They both kind of tumbled to the ground. Lauren gets up, ground. And as lauren gets up, she she on her back she puts she stamps on her back and with vr now, you cant get away with that. You know, i knew straight away, as soon as shes done that, soon as i look at done that, as soon as i look at it, theres only to be one it, theres only going to be one decision. And that was the red card. And shes shes going to suffer that. Going to suffer for that. Shes going to miss quarterfinal, god miss the quarterfinal, god willing. The semis willing. We get to the semis and hopefully to play hopefully shell be able to play a further part in that. But yeah, it was a red card and you know, we a penalty know, we had a penalty disallowed, which i thought was know, we had a penalty dilittle ned, which i thought was know, we had a penalty dilittle soft which i thought was know, we had a penalty dilittle soft in1ich i thought was know, we had a penalty dilittle soft in the i thought was know, we had a penalty dilittle soft in the in hought was know, we had a penalty dilittle soft in the in theght was a little soft in the in the game, which i think the referee come the decision. Come to the right decision. Okay. Jason we might give one away okay. Jason we might give one awejason were running jason sorry, were running out time and i do want to us out of time and i do want to us look ahead to saturday, his game next game where next saturdays game where england will face colombia or jamaica. Have had a bit jamaica. Now they have had a bit of a scare today. How easily is it going to be to get over that and to be back to the lionesses, the strong lionesses that we know on saturday . Well, look, you go through this in tournament. You dont play this in tournament. You dont play your best football every single game. Its rare you get performances ten out of ten, nine out of ten every single game. So theyll learn from that. Go back. I think what they need wary of is looking at need to be wary of is looking at what nigeria do. Play what nigeria do. They play whoever they in that game. Whoever they play in that game. You look at way you should look at the way nigeria sets today, looking you should look at the way nigeriinets today, looking you should look at the way nigeriin behind oday, looking you should look at the way nigeriin behind oday, they ng you should look at the way nigeriin behind oday, they play to get in behind when they play the the back. So sarina the three at the back. So Sarina Wiegman is very well versed at going through tournaments. Were already champions, already european champions, of course. That course. So i mean, no doubt that she forward to that she will look forward to that game things right game and get the things right that perhaps didnt go so well this morning. Jason cundy, thank brilliant. Jason cundy, thank you so for reaction you so much for your reaction and thoughts they will and thoughts there. They will come with a roar on come back with a roar on saturday. Am saturday. Us plus, believe it or not, the Animal Rights campaigners urging Animal Rights campaigners urging a pub landlord to change the name of his boozer. This one might get you going. First, lets get your headlines with ray addison. Ray addison. Good afternoon. 1 01. Our top story this hour, the first group of migrants have now boarded the bibby stockholm in dorset. Its not yet known exactly how many Asylum Seekers have moved into the controversial barge facility. More people are expected later on today as the migrants arrived at the entrance to Portland Port. Demonstrators were assembled to protest against the barges location. For those watching on television, we can see live footage of the bibby stockholm right now and the gangway which the men use to enter the vessel. Of course, their arrival follows delays caused by health and safety concerns , including and safety concerns, including the Firefighters Union warns that the barge is a potential death trap. Death trap. Anything like this, where a large groups of migrants are congregated , is never popular, congregated, is never popular, which is why we have to stop the crisis in the channel. But we cant do that by having the pull factors of having Wonderful Hotels being used for Illegal Migrants whove travelled through several safe countries to get here. Lets not forget that that was sarah dines mp the safeguarding minister, Shadow International trade secretary Nick Thomas Symonds told us how labour would stop the small boat arrivals. Arrivals. What we will be doing is driving down that asylum backlog. Well do that firstly by using doing the £140 million the governments currently spent on rwanda plan, which has sent more home secretaries through wander than people to actually have a cross border policing unit to try and bust the model of the people smuggling gangs so that fewer people end up in the engush that fewer people end up in the English Channel on that dangerous crossing in the first place. Well , as place. Well, as the government continues its crackdown , continues its crackdown, multiple reports suggest that its considering plans to house people who arrive in the uk by unauthorised means. On Ascension Island, the british overseas territory is located over 4000 miles from the uk in the atlantic ocean. It currently houses two military bases and has a population of around 800 non permanent residents. The proposals are seen as a possible plan b if the governments rwanda scheme fails. However a downing street official has said its confident it will win the Upcoming Court case. The kigali deal remains the governments focus as from next year, fines will triple for businesses and landlords who knowingly support Illegal Migrants coming into the country. Under new government country. Under new government plans, bosses who employ Asylum Seekers could face fines of up to £60,000 per breach. The Prime Minister also saying hes increased police raids by 50 to help clamp down on illegal workers. The home Office Warning that illegal working and renting are significant pull factors for those Channel Crossings connected devices such as Baby Monitors and Smart Speakers are increasingly being used to survey , harass and control survey, harass and control victims of Domestic Abuse. Thats to according mps there, citing data from the Charity Refuge warning that its likely to become even more prevalent in the future. Theyre urging the government now to make a commitment to tackle the issues of tech abuse. The new government figures showing that there are on average nine connected devices in every uk household. Scientists have household. Scientists have started developing new vaccines as an insurance against future pandemics. The work is being pandemics. The work is being carried out at the governments high security porton down lab in wiltshire. Theyve drawn up a list of animal viruses which are capable of infecting humans and could potentially spread around the world. Professor Dame Jenny Harries, chief exec of the uk Health Security agency , says Health Security agency, says theyve learnt lessons from covid and the laboratories here. Its 2800m2 of investment through the Vaccine Task Force through the Vaccine Task Force through the Vaccine Task Force through the uk government during covid. And so what were trying to do now is capture that really excellent work from covid and make sure were using that as we go forward for any new pandemic threats. Threats. The uk is set to have a brand new Transatlantic Airline which is promising to offer lower fares. Global airlines aims to start operating between gatwick and new york by the middle of next year, before then launching flights to los angeles. The chief executive says people are sick and tired of the way that theyre being treated by existing companies. Hes pledging to be better with Higher Quality services. And Higher Quality services. And finally, the lionesses have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the womens world cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over nigeria. England scored four nigeria. England scored four goals, while nigeria netted only two following the 123 minute extended match. Chloe kelly scored the winning goal following another other rather successful shots from beth england , rachel daley and alex england, rachel daley and alex greenwood. Theyll now face greenwood. Theyll now face either jamaica or colombia in eitherjamaica or colombia in the quarterfinals on saturdays lioness. Fans said the game was lioness. Fans said the game was an emotional roller coaster. Really tough game, obviously. Keira walsh came back, put a shift in after being injured , shift in after being injured, going down to ten players. But we were always going to win the game. Always amazing. Honestly i cant believe it. It was hard. It was a tough game, but we got there in the end, you know, im really happy that we managed to get through, but im like, i think they could have played better though. Winning on penalties is this is gb news across the uk on tv, in your car, on Digital Radio and on your Smart Speaker by saying play gb now lets saying play gb news. Now lets get to emily and. Pip ray. Get back to emily and. Pip ray. Thank you very much. You are with the live desk. The first group of Asylum Seekers are on board the bibby stockholm barge in dorset and more are expected to embark later today. Human rights campaigners Amnesty International has condemned housing Asylum Seekers on the vessel and the decision has also caused controversy in the local area. Yes. Meanwhile with the rwanda plan caught up in the courts, the government could have a back up plan. Migrants could reportedly be sent to Ascension Island, which is 4000 miles away from the uk, and home to only 800 people. Well, lets get more on all of the latest with this. There is a lot to it. First of all, we will cross to portland in dorset and join our home. And security editor mark white. Good afternoon, mark. Lets start with this confusion. The government arent initially saying earlier this morning, the Home Office Minister, that there would be 500 people on board this barge by the weekend. Now they seems to have back pedalled just a bit on that. Just a little bit on that. Yeah, i just think that sarah dines , the Home Office Minister, dines, the Home Office Minister, in a radio interview which i was listening to this morning, just misspoke or or misheard is perfectly straightforward. She just didnt really hear the question , which was about the question, which was about the number of Asylum Seekers moving into the barge 500, the presenters spoke about by the end of the week. She didnt hear that aspect, but she was talking. I think, about the overall aspiration option, which is to house 500 Asylum Seekers on that barge. It was never the intention to do that in the space of a week it will be over many weeks, if not months , many weeks, if not months, before we get up to that 500 figure. And its by no means certain that well actually even get to 500 on this barge. Given the concerns that have been expressed out about fire safety and whether the barge initially designed to hold some 250 people is over capacity city in fire safety terms for now at 500. So we might get there. It depends how determined the government is to push through to 500, but it may well be that we are shy of that. Maybe half that number there, but certainly they wont be there by this weekend. We can confirm that mark. A lot of the local opposition to this barge has been around safety concerns, having 500 single men in one space, is that a risk to the local community . A lot of people have raised those concerns. Fair enough. But actually reading about this barge, it sounds like its to going be well, theres going to be a lot of security. Indeed. Weve got security guards on duty, 24 seven airport style baggage screening, metal detectors, id swipe cards whenever they enter or leave via a single main entrance. It a single main entrance. It sounds like its going to be a lot safer, a lot more secure than the Hotel Accommodation thats currently housing thousands of people. Thousands of people. Yeah , i mean, there will be a yeah, i mean, there will be a security detail that is on on the barge. They will take it in, the barge. They will take it in, shift some of the personnel that work on the barge will live on the barge as well. And yeah, the barge as well. And yeah, youre right. The barge as well. And yeah, youre right. They have to go youre right. They have to go through the security to get into the port. This is although its no longer officially a naval port, it does play host very regularly to naval vessels as there are four navy ships currently in the port. So of course, you would expect that security around the port is tight. So when they come into the port, they are bused out to another secure area which is where the barge is within the barge as well. They have to go through metal detectors , knife through metal detectors, knife arches and the like before they then can go to the accommodation part of the barge. And there is security personnel on shift throughout. But of course, that doesnt mean that there are these security key processes in place when the Asylum Seekers , place when the Asylum Seekers, like anyone else, can go out and into the local community and there will be regular bus trips that will take them from the port of portland out to weymouth and to other locations within portland. They are free to come and go as they please. Mark human rights campaigners are obviously, you know , hopping mad obviously, you know, hopping mad about this. About this. Amnesty international has described the barge as being reminiscent of the prison hulks from the victorian Victorian Era. An utterly shameful way to house people who have fled terror, conflict and persecution and putting them on a floating barge can actually be retraumatizing. Do they have retraumatizing. Do they have a point when they say that . I mean, youve been on the barge, youve had a good look around. Youve had a good look around. I think theres a point in terms of safety concerns, fire safety regulations , but safety regulations, but comparing it to a Victorian Era prison, hulk , i just dont think prison, hulk, i just dont think they do themselves any service at all in terms of their cause by claiming that now these are people i would imagine that none of these people have actually been on the barge. I was on the been on the barge. I was on the barge two weeks ago and its not a a Victorian Era prison hulk. Thatis a a Victorian Era prison hulk. That is not what this is. The cabins are perfectly pleasant and roomy enough. There are two people sharing in a cabin , but people sharing in a cabin, but thats not unlike what you would see on many sort of standard rooms in a cruise ship. They have en suite bathrooms. They have en suite bathrooms. They have other storage areas. Theres lots of wraparound amenities on this barge as well. Its just i think , inaccurate its just i think, inaccurate and does them a disservice service to suggest that this is akin to a prison hulk , thank you akin to a prison hulk, thank you very much indeed. Mark white there, our home and security editor. It does seem a bit hyperbolic to call it Something Like that. I mean, it Something Like that. I mean, it certainly beats the calais jungle. But let us know what you think at home. I think part of the problem is, is that putting them on a barge is not integrating into the integrating them into the community in any shape or form whatsoever. And it they havent been and it but they havent been granted asylum. It is, say some granted asylum. It is, say some you know demonise them and at the day, they are the end of the day, they are human beings as keep calling human beings as we keep calling them, and them, Asylum Seekers. And migrants. Are human migrants. But they are human beings well. Well i think we beings as well. Well i think we need them safe and need to keep them safe and secure, thats for sure. Need to keep them safe and sec anyway, s for sure. Need to keep them safe and sec anyway, lets sure. Need to keep them safe and sec anyway, lets go e. Need to keep them safe and sec anyway, lets go to our anyway, lets go to our south west of england. Reporter jeff moody, who is also in portland. Very portland. Jeff, thank you very much. Been speaking much. Now, youve been speaking to groups from to local opposition groups from both the aisle , some both sides of the aisle, some saying its inhumane, others saying its inhumane, others saying its inhumane, others saying it risks risks the safety of people already living in the. Community thats right. Its not just the safety of the people that the safety of the people that the concern is the concern is that the that the facilities down here, the Services Important and are so stretched at the best of times, people telling me they cant see gp telling me they cant see a gp for love money. They cant for love and money. They cant find dentist for love and find a dentist for love and money then hearing money and theyre then hearing that these facilities are that all of these facilities are available to Asylum Seekers available to the Asylum Seekers on so that has caused on the barge. So that has caused a great deal of consternation down here. But and then the whole concept of 500 young men let loose in an area they dont know in a country that isnt their own. And we dont know who these people are. So that has been the main crux of the argument from up to argument from the stand up to racism. Sorry the no to the racism. Sorry from the no to the barge campaign, stand up to barge campaign, the stand up to racism , a totally racism campaign, a totally separate campaign. Also dont want the barge here, but there. Want the barge here, but there. Our crux of their argument is that prison barge. Its that its a prison barge. Its not right for the dignity of the Asylum Seekers to be put into this position. Well the stand up to racism now, theres a big sign refugees welcome. Theres a trolley there with flowers in it. What that is a welcome pack. They all of the pack that has all sorts of things in it maps of the area, flowers to and apparently a pen and paper so they can practise their english. Now the note of the barge group has deliberately decided to stay these guys to take centre stage in welcoming them. But i managed to persuade lorraine from no to the barge to come down here to explain to us why youre staying away. Why why arent you guys here with your placards as normal . Hello. Good afternoon. So we decided today isnt the right day for us today isnt the right day for us to come down and protest. Today is about the Asylum Seekers board in the barge and they will be welcomed into the community. But today isnt our day for coming down here. Obviously the other group are here with their welcoming things, so thats fine. But we are now concerned and with many men and thats where were going to be pushing this and taking it forward because your your your beef really isnt with the people themselves, is it . Its with its with dorset council. Its with its with the home office , too. And its with home office, too. And its with Portland Port, but not with the people themselves. And thats people themselves. And thats quite an important distinction to make, isnt it . Thats definitely not asked to be put onto this barge or into any of the hotels. You know, they are being brought here today. And like i say, they will be welcomed into the community. But our beef is with the government and thats where were going to be taking it now with our steps. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you very much indeed. Well, protest continues. And as we heard on, we are we heard earlier on, we are expecting another busload fairly shortly. Thank you shortly. Back to you. Thank you very indeed. Very much indeed. Jeff there live in jeff moody there live in portland, speaking to some of those campaigners decided those campaigners whove decided to a bit. Yeah and to tone it down a bit. Yeah and apologies, because we did have a few difficulties few technical difficulties there, you did there, but hopefully you did hear had to right hear what they had to say. Right now, elsewhere the news, now, elsewhere in the news, theres lot of things about theres a lot of things about illegal immigration the illegal immigration today in the papers, talking about papers, well be talking about ministers. Apparently ministers. Theyre apparently considering a plan to send asylum ascension Asylum Seekers to Ascension Island. This is a very island. Now, this is a very Remote Island indeed. , it is. Some 4000 miles yes, it is. Some 4000 miles away, a remote volcanic island. And its only got about 800 People Living on there. So lets People Living on there. So lets get the reaction of the former head of the uk border force, tony smith. Tony, this sounds very much like from the government, a plan b, if their plan to send Asylum Seekers to rwanda doesnt come off, is it a good plan b, in your opinion . Good plan b, in your opinion . So the Ascension Island idea isnt a new one. It was something that was raised three years ago by the policy exchange when the government were looking to try and replicate something that australia did by removing Asylum Seekers to a third place. As you know, in australia they had nauru and island in the pacific where they did this. So there was quite a lot of investigations into whether Ascension Island was appropriate or as potential location. Or not as a potential location. As understand it, it was ruled as i understand it, it was ruled out at that time because as your report shows, theres very little habitation ascension little habitation on Ascension Island. It would be a Huge Investment to do what the australians did narrow on australians did in narrow on Ascension Island. And when you talk plan a and plan b , talk about plan a and plan b, actually rwanda a plan b, actually rwanda is a plan b, plan a was to come to an agreement with the European Union and france, which are of course, safe countries to return people instantly to france where they dont fear persecution. And they dont fear persecution. And of course, france is a signatory to the 1951 convention. I think most people would want to do that if that were feasible. But unfortunately, government unfortunately, this government hasnt able to negotiate an hasnt been able to negotiate an agreement with the eu on being able to do that. So all of these other options to remove people to third countries are really plan bs in themselves. But the government has to get removals going somehow because if we dont start removing people from the territory, then they keep coming. They, tony i coming. Arent they, tony i dont saw, but over dont know if you saw, but over the weekend Suella Braverman, dont know if you saw, but over the home nd Suella Braverman, dont know if you saw, but over the home secretary, braverman, dont know if you saw, but over the home secretary, sheerman, dont know if you saw, but over the home secretary, she accused keir of having a web of keir starmer of having a web of cronies , lawyers. Cronies, lawyers. Et cetera. Who are trying to sabotage her plans to stop the boats at the same time , it does boats at the same time, it does seem like the government is scrambling around for different deals. Apparently, theyre talking other african talking to five other african nafions talking to five other african nations to have some kind of rwanda style scheme. What rwanda style scheme. What happens next . So what were seeing is a patchwork of different measures , arent we . And i think you guys are going to be busy this week. Theres going to be several announcements about the small boats which are all coming together. I think, you know, youve story. Youve together. I think, you know, yourun story. Youve together. I think, you know, you run on story. Youve together. I think, you know, you run on the story. Youve together. I think, you know, yourun on the barge. ouve together. I think, you know, yourun on the barge. Theres just run on the barge. Theres going other sites theyre going to be other sites theyre looking to put people in. Looking at to put people in. There will be new enforcement measures making it harder measures making it much harder for who irregular for people who come by irregular routes employment or rent routes to get employment or rent accommodation and accommodation in the uk. And then got other then youve got these other options. Other options. Are there other countries rwanda that will countries like rwanda that will be to take people back, be prepared to take people back, as countries . Source and as well as countries . Source and transit that would transit countries that would take anyway like albania take them anyway like albania does, and as you know, albania has some successes. I mean, has had some successes. I mean, the numbers coming from that country a lot country have gone down a lot because negotiated because weve negotiated a returns with that returns agreement with that country me, it does country. But for me, it does come to the question come back to the question of returns. To get back returns. We do need to get back to removals. We were i was to removals. We were when i was there, removing significantly more people from the territory than now. And we than we are now. And i think we need to back into those need to get back into those realms of sending people back. And for you guys to send the message the smugglers and the message to the smugglers and the migrants that its not migrants in calais that its not worth here, because worth coming here, because if you here, you wont be you do come here, you wont be allowed stay. And ultimately allowed to stay. And ultimately you back either to you will be sent back either to your or some your own country or to some other third country where you can processed. And i think can be processed. And i think this what government is this is what the government is trying do. Theyre running this is what the government is tryinall do. Theyre running this is what the government is tryinall kindstheyre running this is what the government is tryinall kinds of yre running this is what the government is tryinall kinds of problems ng this is what the government is tryin all kinds of problems from into all kinds of problems from legal stations, legal represent stations, judicial and so on, judicial reviews and so on, which have been going on now for some and we some considerable time. And we still got approval still havent got approval even from courts send from our own courts to send people and thats the problem. Tony, really appreciate your thoughts. We could talk to you for much longer. But for so much longer. But unfortunately, always, weve for so much longer. But unforturofely, always, weve for so much longer. But unforturof time. Always, weve for so much longer. But unforturof time. Tony|ys, weve for so much longer. But unforturof time. Tony smith ve run out of time. Tony smith there, head uk there, former head of the uk border force. Thanks for talking to gb news. Plenty more to us on gb news. Plenty more still come. Include thing if still to come. Include thing if you use parking apps, it costs could cost you less than paying cash. Could cost you less than paying cash. That seems a little cash. That seems a little unfair. Well be talking about that very shortly. First, heres the all important weather. The all important weather. Looks like things are heating up. Boxed boilers, proud up. Boxed boilers, proud sponsors of weather on. Gb news sponsors of weather on. Gb news alex deakin here with your latest weather updates from the met office for gb news. A few showers scattered about today, but most places will have a fine monday. The winds light bit of sunshine at times coming through. We will see a bit of cloud and rain coming in across the south tonight and tomorrow from weather feature. But from this weather feature. But generally, little of generally, a little ridge of high most High Pressure bringing most a fine today. Main fine day today. The main exception, of scotland. Exception, of course, scotland. Well we are going to see a scattering theyll scattering of showers. Theyll come the day, come and go through the day, could see some heavier ones dunng could see some heavier ones during this evening. Odd during this evening. The odd shower over northern england, but england, wales, but most of england, wales, northern dry some cloud, Northern Ireland dry some cloud, yes, see a of yes, but well see a bit of sunshine at times, lifting the temperatures low 20, temperatures into the low 20, maybe across maybe 22, 23 across the south east. Places , though south east. Most places, though only high teens yet only in the high teens yet again. And the cloud will be thickening in the south west of england. Is going to push england. That is going to push into as so turning into wales as well. So turning quite through the quite cloudy here through the evening. Odd light evening. Again, the odd light shower really, and then some heavier showers for Northern Ireland scotland , but they ireland and scotland, but they should to fade quite should tend to fade quite quickly through evening. So quickly through this evening. So many across the north many places across the north having a clear night, actually turning quite cool. Temperatures down into single figures in rural but the cloud and rural spots. But the cloud and the outbreaks rain making for the outbreaks of rain making for a grey, damp, drizzly start in south wales and south west england. A bit england. The coast here a bit drab. First thing, thats drab. First thing, and thats a thicker cloud with some outbreaks of light rain and drizzle will push into the midlands and then eventually into south england into parts of south east england to england, northern to northern england, Northern Ireland, southern scotland. Most places with places here dry and bright with sunny just few showers sunny spells, just a few showers across far north. And again, across the far north. And again, temperatures high temperatures mostly in the high teens. Temperatures mostly in the high teens. Looks like temperatures mostly in the high teens. Looks like things are heating up. Heating up. Boxed boilers proud sponsors of weather on. Gb news. Welcome back to the live desk on gb news. Right. A question for you. Should you pay more for your parking . If you use cash rather parking . If you use cash rather than if you use your phone . Because that is what is happening to people who live in a certain part of south london. The council there has really been criticised for introducing higher Parking Charges for people who use cash rather than their app. Yes, the council in question is Sutton Council and they say its due to the rising cost of providing the machine with an increasing number of councils looking to shift to a fully digital system. So paul hawkins is in sutton for us this morning. Paul youve been speaking to lots of people down there who dont seem too impressed this. Impressed by this. Not at all. Lets just no, not at all. Lets just talk you through some of the Parking Charges. So here we have one hour, £3. Right. And thats if you pay by cash. But if you if you pay by cash. But if you use the app, its £2. So effectively we groups like the rac and indeed the government are saying its discriminatory. Are saying its discriminatory. Its not taking into account vulnerable groups. Its not taking into account the elderly. This is what people whove been using have been using this machine have been telling earlier today, the telling us earlier today, the old because none of them old people, because none of them have phones and apps. Have got phones and apps. Are going to the old people are going to pay the old people are going to pay cash. The Old Fashioned way. So theyre paying more people that cant afford it, like the apps, if they want to park it, theyre going to pay than theyre going to pay more than if young person could just if a young person could just pick and go on pick up their phone and go on the app. If i here, i just want if i come here, i just want to do things very quickly. Yeah, to do things very quickly. Yeah, go to a couple of go go to a couple of shops, go home. I want to come here, home. I dont want to come here, have the app. Have to download the app. So what about what about using phone thats here using the phone line thats here so you can so you can get a discounted rate there if you phone up use your card. Phone it up and use your card. Oh, thats thats big writing isnt dont really carry cash. Yeah. So i cant and i dont want to walk to the pay station with my toddler. Im like, sounds but just way sounds lazy, but its just way more isnt it . Yeah. More convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To pay via your app. To pay via your app. So thats what people have been this morning. Been telling us this morning. The london borough of sutton have been theyve put this policy into place for the last couple of months , so theyre couple of months, so theyre still trying to refine it. Earlier on, we caught up with the cabinet member whos responsible for parking in the borough, and he gave the borough, and he gave us the reasons as why why theyre reasons as to why why theyre charging those use charging more for those who use cash instead the app. We cash instead of the app. We collect cash from our car parks. We have two people we have to send two people around to pick up the money. Weve to maintain, continue weve got to maintain, continue to the parking to maintain the car parking machines council is machines and Sutton Council is actually at moment actually spending at the moment £36,000 maintaining £36,000 a year on maintaining our car parking machines. So it does say here, yeah. So it does say here, but thats immediately but thats not immediately obvious. Thing is obvious. And the other thing is the phone number that you can use to pay by card is only down here in very small writing. And i really, really i think thats really, really reasonable. Someone else has reasonable. And someone else has pointed that to me. And pointed that out to me. And i think going to take that think were going to take that back going to make back and were going to make sure its more prominent. Sure that its more prominent. So to be fair to the council there, have taken on board there, they have taken on board what told them. There, they have taken on board whtpeople told them. There, they have taken on board whtpeople have them. There, they have taken on board whtpeople have been. There, they have taken on board whtpeople have been telling us people have been telling us about about the about the signage, about the fact number, which you fact the phone number, which you can pay by card, needs to be made prominent. And also made more prominent. And also the in the charges, the difference in the charges, because a look again because if we have a look again at you know, all do it. At this, you know, we all do it. You bowl and see these you bowl up and you see these prices. You mean you think thats it . And then this bit discounted for discounted price available for cashless is the cashless payment. This is the bit bottom that many of bit at the bottom that many of us wouldnt read. So us probably wouldnt read. So theyre look at the theyre going to look at the signage. They do say that they are change that. Are going to change that. But the council look, it cost the council say, look, it cost them £36,000 a year to collect them £36,000 a year to collect the cash. Can absorb that the cash. Now we can absorb that cost, then obviously that cost, but then obviously that means well make cuts means well have to make cuts elsewhere or raise taxes elsewhere or borrow it. And ultimately taxpayer ultimately the taxpayer will have fund the bill. So have to fund the bill. So theyre this on those theyre passing this on to those that that to use that instead that want to use cash and, you know, they are looking changing the looking into changing the signage. Kind the signage. But thats kind of the number at the moment. Number of it at the moment. Thank you very indeed. Thank you very much indeed. Paul from a paul hawkins there live from a car in sutton, south car park in sutton, south london. Know, £36,000 on london. You know, £36,000 on upkeep of machines does sound a bit steep. It does sound a bit steep. I it does sound a bit steep. I mean, i just think it should be there should be parity. You know, the same parking know, its the same car parking space. Same location in. Also, i dont want to see people give people a fair choice. I dont want to be phoning up a random number to pay for my parking. So right. So right. Well, no, you can it on well, no, you can do it on the app, though. Yeah, you can do it in the app. But my problem is, is that i always forget to use the app as ihave always forget to use the app as i have done today. She hasnt been clamped though yet. Not yet. But all this feeds in dont kill in to our very own dont kill cash campaign. We are less than 5000 signatures off reaching the magical quarter of a million sign ask sign up mark. Woohoo as we ask for government agree to for the government to agree to preserving cash until 2050, and once reach the Promised Land once we reach the Promised Land of 250,000, we want to push the government to make the pledge. As soon as possible. Excellent. Keep those signatures coming in. 250,000. Thatis signatures coming in. 250,000. That is quite impressive , that is quite impressive, actually. So thank you very much indeed. To come, though, indeed. Still to come, though, on show, an animal on the show, why an Animal Rights is objecting Rights Organisation is objecting to a bit of bulldog spirit and the landlord, whos having absolutely none of but absolutely none of it. But first, get the. News first, lets get the. News 1 31. Im ray addison first, lets get the. News 1 31. Im ray addison in first, lets get the. News 1 31. Im ray addison in the 1 31. As labour leader sir keir starmer has called Just Stop Oils demands as contemptible as he attempts to distance himself from the eco group. Yes, he said, labour would not tear up the 100 new drilling licences that the Prime Minister plans to grant. He added he would only ban the granting of new licences to explore oil and gas fields in the north sea. Hes give businesses hes seeking to give businesses certainty, the certainty, criticising the demands of Just Stop Oil to simply turn off the taps. So joining us now is our Political Correspondent olivia utley. Olivia this has been framed as Keir Starmer Starmer clarifying his position, but to me it still seems a little bit confused. If seems a little bit confused. If youre not supportive of oil and gas drilling, why would you keep those licences intact that the government has put in place, has granted . Granted . Well, i think youre right to say it is a little bit confusing. He has given a bit of clarity in that in the last few days. Shadow ministers have seemingly contradict each other over their response to rishi sunaks plan to give 100 new oil and gas licences to two new providers in the north sea. Some of them seem to say they were on board with it and labour would do something similar. Some seem to say that they would revoke all oil and gas licences. It really wasnt clear so in saying that clear at all. So in saying that keir starmer, in saying that he would current gas would allow current oil and gas licences continue not licences to continue but not give any new ones. Keir starmer has given a clarification of sorts, but as you say , in terms sorts, but as you say, in terms of the sort of moral framework that hes working on or sort of ethical concerns, it is quite hard to see where he stands. It sounds as though rishi Sunak Keir Starmer is trying to show that hes balancing the concerns of oil and gas providers in the nonh of oil and gas providers in the north sea and all of the business is which are heavily dependent on oil and gas in the nonh dependent on oil and gas in the north sea and the concerns of climate activists in his own party and members of the labour party in particular, who tend to be on the left of the party. Remember, lots of them joined up in the days of jeremy corbyn. Those members, although there might of 100,000 or might only be sort of 100,000 or so them, very so of them, they are very important starmer when important to keir starmer when it comes to campaigning for a general election because hes going need on going to need boots on the ground. Be ground. They tend to be of a very eco friendly mindset and it sounds as though keir starmer is trying to keep everyone on side with what he would call a sort of nuanced meanwhile, of nuanced policy. Meanwhile, rishi sunak seems to be really going all in on on trying to row back a little bit on his green policies after winning that uxbndge policies after winning that uxbridge by election unexpectedly a few weeks ago on the grounds that people in uxbndge the grounds that people in uxbridge dont like the idea of the ulez charge expanding rishi sunak seems to have made the decision that he can create a sort of wedge issue between himself and labour on the environment. If he himself and labour on the environment. If he can himself and labour on the environment. If he can show that environment. If he can show that he is in no rush to reach net zero, that he is concerned about the money in peoples pockets, about businesses, about the oil the money in peoples pockets, aborgastinesses, about the oil the money in peoples pockets, aborgas industry, about the oil the money in peoples pockets, aborgas industry, and ut the oil the money in peoples pockets, aborgas industry, and is the oil and gas industry, and is prepared to put eco concerns a little bit on the back burner. He thinks he can win over some votes from that. So it feels at votes from that. So it feels at the moment as though labour and the moment as though labour and the conservatives are both trying of their trying to sort of feel their way, work out where voters stand on issue and create their on this issue and create their policies accordingly. Policies accordingly. Olivia lets also talk about what happened last week on rishi sunak roof of his home in North Yorkshire. He wasnt there, but yorkshire. He wasnt there, but we all saw the pictures of the greenpeace protesters on the roof. It sounds like downing street might now be dishing out their own punishment because they have been saying, or number 10 has been saying today that greenpeace should not get a seat at the table when it comes to talking about climate related issues. Thats in light of what happened last week. Well absolutely. The government has come down like a tonne of bricks on greenpeace , unsurprisingly. Greenpeace, unsurprisingly. Really, this was an attack on the Prime Ministers family home in his North Yorkshire constituency last week. Therese constituency last week. Therese coffey, the environment secretary, ordered defra, the department for the environment to cut all ties with greenpeace and to cease communication with the group. And today rishi sunak the group. And today rishi sunak seems to have doubled down on that and has, it seems, ordered all Government Departments to cease all contact with greenpeace, saying that a group like this shouldnt have a seat at the table. So its another opportunity for rishi sunak. I mean, in a way, greenpeace have have presented him with a with a golden opportunity, although it cant have been nice. Im having his family home attacked. He now has has a really good excuse to come down hard on groups like greenpeace and Just Stop Oil, which in the public eye are very, very unpopular. So its low hanging fruit for the conservatives. This okay. Political correspondent olivia utley, live from westminster. Thanks very much. Well, a popular landlord has accused Animal Rights group peta of wokery. They demanded he change the name of his boozer. Yes, mike newton, the owner of the old bulldog, revealed hed received a letter from the Animal Welfare charity urging him to change the name to wait for it. The old mutt, because the current name encourages people to buy sickness prone breeds. Our Midlands Reporter will hollis explains. Breeds. Our Midlands Reporter will hollis explains. All will hollis explains. All a proper british boozer with a proper british name. The old bulldog, a name thats now been splashed across the National News and all because of this bulldog , atticus. Mike and news and all because of this bulldog, atticus. Mike and his wife laurie rescued him , if you wife laurie rescued him, if you look closely into his mouth. Come on, sweetie. You can see that his teeth have been ground down with an angle grinder, which is usually a sign that he was a bait dog in the dog fighting. When mike bought the sea lion, a humble corner pub in stoke on trent, he fancied a new name and thought atticus breed was perfect. But not everyone agrees. And royal rights group peta reckons it glorifies brachycephalic breeds of dog like bulldogs and pugs that develop breathing difficulties and other Health Issues because of their squashed snouts and skull shape. They sent mike a letter telling him to scrap the name. This letter on my phone and essentially it says what we want to do is to get rid of the name the old bulldog, replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old mutt. Well, i was really quite cross about it because i felt that it was intrusive , it felt that it was intrusive, it was patronising and it was also an attack on a cherished national symbol. The bulldog , national symbol. The bulldog, which we love in this country. It was an attack on Small Business. Peta which stands for people for the ethical treatment of animals, says that promoting breeds with breathing impairments normalises their suffering and encourages others to get them. The name of the pub is not going to influence anyone in in in what dog they choose to buy. And that was pretty much their reasoning. Reasoning. They say theyd even pay to help rename the pub to the old mutt , which they help rename the pub to the old mutt, which they think will go down better with locals. Down better with locals. Why should Animal Rights get involved in it . Its got nothing to do with them. What a name of a pub is. People are getting of the dog if they want the dog. He loved the breed of the dog. It was called the sea lion before. So did that encourage people to keep sea lions . No mike, a conservative mike, whos a conservative parliamentary candidate, says the name is staying. Well, its obviously a woke agenda globally on many fronts , agenda globally on many fronts, isnt there . But, you know , here isnt there . But, you know, here in the midlands then theyve met the match because were not changing the name of the pub. You we love our bulldogs you know, we love our bulldogs and not backing down on this. The stoke pub was renamed once doing it twice. Well, that would be barking mad. Nice dog. Nice pub. Nice dog. Nice pub. Will hollis gb news in stoke on trent. On trent. Right. Well, joining us now right. Well, joining us now is kate verner , who is a senior is kate verner, who is a Senior Campaign manager at peta, itself. Kate, this must just be a pr campaign , surely . Surely. Peta campaign, surely . Surely. Peta the campaign group, cant actually be bothered about a pubs name. Talk about sweating the small stuff. The small stuff. Well, i mean, the bottom line here is that bulldogs are being born to suffer because theyve been deliberately bred to have exaggerated features like unnaturally flat faces and shortened airwaves. And, you know , and we know that these know, and we know that these dogs can barely breathe without gasping for air, let alone walk or chase a ball like every dog should be able to do. So, you should be able to do. So, you know, this is about people being influenced by what they see on social media and about what they see. You know, maybe at their local pub and, you know, when it comes to dogs, theres been a surge of interest in flat faced breeds, largely to their breeds, largely due to their popularity social media. And popularity on social media. And theyre it. Theyre suffering because of it. So, yeah , were asking pub so, yeah, were asking the pub to change its name to highlight these that these these issues that these dogs suffer and you know, suffer from and you know, theyre incredibly unwell dogs. So we shouldnt be promoting and glamorising these breeds. Kate i completely agree with you on what you say about the health of these dogs. And i think people would actually be shocked if they saw what a bulldog looked like, say, in the 1920s and what bulldog looks like today. I mean, the difference astonishing. Like today. I mean, the difference astonishing. Im difference is astonishing. Im just convinced of your just not quite convinced of your tactic, though, in terms of are people really going to see the sign on a pub and is it going to therefore then trigger a conversation about the overbreeding of these dogs . Is it better to use your time it not better to use your time and your money to target the breeders that are selling the dogs for this ridiculous money, not the pubs that have got these these names . These names . Yeah, i mean, we have many tactics to end, you know, dog breeding and to encourage people to adopt and not shop, but, you know , we know that the pub know, we know that the pub recently rebranded from the sea lion and we thought maybe they might opening switching it might be opening to switching it up again if it meant helping animals. And yeah, offered to animals. And yeah, we offered to contribute to the contribute some money to the cost new sign. And so on cost of the new sign. And so on and so that this, you know, Small Business wouldnt be out of this has, of of pocket. But this has, of course, started a huge conversation you know, conversation over you know, bulldogs cruel it is to bulldogs and how cruel it is to breed them for these features that them to suffer for that cause them to suffer for their whole lives. Absolutely. You when you leave you know, and when you leave them, you know, 20 even years ago, theyre so different and they suffer much. They suffer so much. And it is it is a good it is a great talking point. Absolutely but if we take this to its logical conclusion, are you there for going to write to every owner or licensee at a pub called the greyhound . Theres called the greyhound . Theres going to be many of those in the uk. Greyhounds are associated with greyhound racing, which many people say is cruel, so dont give them eye contact. Dont give them eye contact. Every of the every every licensee of the greyhound pub, well mean if it gets people talking, which you know, it inevitably does, this is, you know , a case in point is, you know, a case in point then then yeah that is something that might that we might do. You know, not just but you know, its not just peter about the health peter talking about the Health Issues bulldogs and other issues of bulldogs and other flat breeds. Royal flat faced breeds. The Royal Veterinary College also Veterinary College is also urging twice urging people to think twice before getting a bulldog or before ever getting a bulldog or other flat faced breeds. You other flat faced breeds. And you know, that theyre twice know, we know that theyre twice as dogs to as likely as other dogs to suffer Serious Health suffer from Serious Health conditions. You know, they cant even birth naturally , even give birth naturally, because heads are even give birth naturally, becasoe heads are even give birth naturally, beca so massive heads are even give birth naturally, becaso massive that heads are even give birth naturally, beca so massive that they s are even give birth naturally, beca so massive that they alle now so massive that they all like. Like. That is that is terrible. And that is that is terrible. And it is interesting to know more about that. Pip was educating me on this issue earlier in the in the break because i dont know anything breeds, anything about dog breeds, but most people reading this story are going to think its absolutely ludicrous to get involved with them. Mahyar tousi involved with them. Mahyar tousi of how people name their pubs also , i fear youre actually also, i fear youre actually erasing the identity of the bulldog by trying to rid the breed entirely from our public houses. They exist and therefore theyre getting representation. Theyre getting representation. I mean, i think most people might see this story and think, you know, actually i didnt know , just like you didnt know that these dogs suffer so when these dogs suffer so much when theyre bred vanity, theyre bred for vanity, essentially human vanity. Essentially for human vanity. And so we hope that it does promote of people think promote lots of people to think twice these these twice about buying these these dogs and yeah. To your to your point, you know, dont we dont think that these bulldogs are a good representation of britain anymore because we know that they are you calling are peter calling for the extinction of this breed of dog. Were calling this breed of dog. Were calling for the end of breeding dogs, you know,. But these bull breeds, they suffer more than than most because of the, like i say, the exaggerated features that people want them to have. That people want them to have. So were calling for this pub to change its name to the old mutt. And we encourage everybody to adopt mutts because they are the healthiest dogs. And have an healthiest dogs. And we have an overpopulation with overpopulation crisis with animals in with dogs in shelters. You know, thousands have given up every year, thousands of them who are these flat faced dogs because theyre so expensive to look after. So expensive to look after. When you go to the pub , when when you go to the pub, when you go to the pub , do you do you you go to the pub, do you do you not go to certain pubs . If you dont like the name the sign, dont like the name on the sign, if is called the bulldog or if it is called the bulldog or if its the greyhound or if its called the greyhound or the horse and jockey, well , i the horse and jockey, well, i think be impossible think it would be impossible to avoid all pubs because avoid all of those pubs because there are so many of them. Okay, so do go in them yourself. So you do go in them yourself. You want pubs to change their names, but you do in them yourself. Well, i mean dont go to the pub very often, but you know, i dont thats really the dont think thats really the issue. Think issue is the issue. I think the issue is the issue. I think the issue is the issue youre saying issue because youre saying to us the licensees should us that the licensees should change the name. Weve to but anyway, weve got to leave really, really leave it there. Really, really appreciate coming on gb news appreciate you coming on gb news to talk about this. It was really interesting. So thank you. And em mm saw em say, i do like the and i must say, i do like the name the old mutt better. Well there go. There you go. One will. Im sure im sure one will. First group of migrants have now boarded the bibby stockholm in dorset. Its not stockholm in dorset. Its not yet known exactly how many Asylum Seekers have moved into the controversial a barge facility, but more are expected later on. Supporters of the Asylum Seekers assembled outside of the entrance of the harbour with welcome packs and placards calling for a stop to the use of what they describe as a prison barge. Now for those watching on barge. Now for those watching on tv , this is live footage of the tv, this is live footage of the bibby stockholm home and the gangway which the men use to enter the vessel. There arrival, of course, following delays caused by health and safety concerns , including the concerns, including the Firefighters Union, warning that the barge is a potential death trap. Refugee charity care for calais says that several migrants did not board the barge today as their transfers were cancelled by lawyers safeguarding minister sarah dines told us its justified despite the concerns. Despite the concerns. Anything like this where a large groups of migrants are congregated is never popular, which is why we have to stop the crisis in the channel but we cant do that by having the pull factors of having Wonderful Hotels is being used for Illegal Migrants who have travelled through several safe countries to get here. Lets not forget that. Well, Shadow International trade secretary Nick Thomas Simmons told us that labour would stop the small boat arrivals. Arrivals. What we will be doing is driving down that asylum backlog. Well do that firstly by using. The £140 million the by using. The £140 million the governments currently spent on rwanda plan, which has sent more home secretaries to rwanda than people to actually have a cross border policing unit to try and bust the model of the people smuggling gangs so that fewer people end up in the English Channel on that dangerous crossing in the first place. Meanwhile , multiple reports meanwhile, multiple reports suggest that the government is considering plans to house people who arrive the uk by people who arrive in the uk by unauthorised means on a Distant Island in the atlantic ocean. Ascension island is a british overseas territory located over 4000 miles away. Currently houses two military bases and has a population of around 800 non permanent residents. The non permanent residents. The proposals are a possible plan b if the governments rwanda scheme fails. The downing streets official says that its confident, however , that it will confident, however, that it will win the Upcoming Court case and the kigali deal remains the governments focus from next year. Governments focus from next year. Fines governments focus from next year. Fines will triple for businesses and landlords who knowingly support Illegal Migrants coming into the country. Under new government plans, bosses who employ Asylum Seekers could face fines of up to £60,000 for each breach. The Prime Minister also saying that hes increased police raids by 50 to clamp down on illegal workers. The home Office Warning that illegal working and renting are significant pull factors for those Channel Crossings connected devices such as Baby Monitors and Smart Speakers are increasingly being used to survey, harass and control victims of Domestic Abuse. Thats according to mps there, citing data from the Charity Refuge, warning that its likely to become even more prevalent in the future. Now theyre urging the future. Now theyre urging the government to make a commitment to tackle the issue of so called tech abuse. New government figures showing that there are on average nine connected devices in every uk household. Scientists have household. Scientists have started developing new vaccines as an insurance against future pandemics. The work is being pandemics. The work is being carried out at the governments high security porton down lab in wiltshire. Theyve drawn up a list of animal viruses which are capable of infecting humans and could spread around the world. Professor Dame Jenny Harries, chief exec of the uk Health Security agency, saying that theyve learned lessons from covid, the laboratories here its 2800m2 of investors went through the Vaccine Task Force through the Vaccine Task Force through the Vaccine Task Force through the uk government during covid. And so what were trying to do now is capture that really excellent work from covid and make sure were using that as we go forward for any new pandemic threats. Threats. Some sport and the lionesses have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the womens world cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over nigeria. In the quarterfinals on saturday, fans described the game as a emotional roller coaster for a really tough game. Obviously, keira walsh came back but shifted after being injured and going down to ten players. But we were always going to win the game, always amazing. Honestly, i cant believe it. It was hard. Its a tough game, but we got there in the end, you know, im really happy that we managed to get through, but im like, i think they could have better they could have played better though. Though. This is gb news across the uk on tv, in your car, on Digital Radio and your Smart Speaker radio and on your Smart Speaker by saying play gb news now lets get back to emily and. Pip get back to emily and. Pip thanks, ray. You are with the live desk on gb news. The first group of Asylum Seekers are now on board the bibby stockholm barge in dorset and more are expected to embark later today. Expected to embark later today. But charity care for calais says that all of the Asylum Seekers they support did not board the vessel as their transfers were cancelled by lawyers. Cancelled by lawyers. Meanwhile, the government is scratching their heads over where else they can house people coming across the channel. There reportedly considering sending migrants to the incredibly remote Ascension Island, which is home to only around 800 people. Well, lets get some more on all of this from portland with our home and security editor mark white. Mark, lets just talk, first of all, about this news that several Asylum Seekers did not board the barge charity for calais, saying that to house any human being in a quasi floating prison like the bibby stockholm is inhumane. There could be more, more transfers cancelled by more lawyers , couldnt there . By more lawyers, couldnt there . This week . Yeah i mean, i think this week . Yeah i mean, i think it was inevitable that we would see some intervention by human Rights Groups and lawyers trying to ensure that people they represent are not put on board. The bibby stockholm. And as the bibby stockholm. And as we understand it, a number of those intervention actions have been successful on the grounds of disabilities and trauma suffered said previously that might reoccur if put on a barge surrounded by water. Thats just some of the sort of the letters and the avenues of appeal that the human Rights Groups and care for calais and the lawyers are exploring now with the home office. In the meantime , as office. In the meantime, as i say, a number of people that were due to go on the barge are not going on the barge while this is sorted. What we can say, this is sorted. What we can say, though , within the last few though, within the last few minutes is a second group of Asylum Seekers have now arrived here in Portland Harbour and have boarded the bibby stockholm. Our cameras got shots of them as they headed up the gangway and onto the bibby stockholm itself. If quite how many there itself. If quite how many there are, we dont know. All we know is that we were briefed that there would be about 50 in total throughout today. Arriving on the bibby stockholm. But if you the bibby stockholm. But if you take into account that some clearly are the subject of this last minute intervention , it last minute intervention, it might not be as high as 50, but we should hopefully get some indication later in the day. The Prime Minister has also been posting on social media today there is without a doubt a big drive on from the government at the moment to show that they are on top of the channel migrant situation, that they are getting tough this is what rishi sunak said in a post on social media when he outlined his five point plan to stop the boats. At first plan to stop the boats. At first im bringing in new laws that will mean if you come to the uk illegally, we. You cant stay no matter how hard you try. Second, ive secured a deal with france that will help stop the boats at source before they cross the channel. Ive also negotiated a deal with albania, which has already helped us bring down crossings from there by 90. Third, ive increase raids by 50 to clamp down on illegal workers. And fourth, im ending workers. And fourth, im ending the farce of Illegal Migrants being put up in hotels by the taxpayer. Fifth, being put up in hotels by the taxpayer. Fifth, im ensuring that the only way to come to the uk for asylum will be through safe and legal routes. Safe and legal routes. So thats proof. I think if any were needed that the we are heading towards that inevitable general election next year. Some time labour have also of course been speaking on this issue, been speaking on this issue, been some what opaque though i think in terms of what they will do with the bibby stockholm barge , with the likes of these barge, with the likes of these military bases that are being turned into for larger scale accommodation centres, not able really to say whether they would continue to with this policy or not. Mark now there are reports in a number of the papers about how ministers are considering essentially island as a back up plan to the rwanda scheme and looking at this, it seems pretty far fetched. If they cant get the rwanda scheme through the courts, all of these multiple legal challenges against the policy, how on earth are they going to be able to send . How on earth would they be able to send migrants all the way to this Remote Island in the south atlantic . Atlantic . It would be extremely difficult to the point of , i difficult to the point of, i think, being pretty unworkable. Think, being pretty unworkable. Its very much being briefed as a sort of a plan b, should rwanda to not come to fruition in terms of the Supreme Court finding in favour of the government . Youll remember, of government . Youll remember, of course, that the court of appeal just recently declared the rwanda deal unlawful, so the government is pinning all its hopes on an appeal to the Supreme Court probably in the next month or two. But if that goes against the government, they really are in deep trouble because they have pushed through the illegal immigration bill. And the way that that bill is designed to operate is it declares anyone who crosses the engush declares anyone who crosses the English Channel in a small boat by unconventional means, as an illegal immigrant, they are then for therefore ineligible to claim asylum in all but a tiny minority of cases and as such they would be detained prior to deportation. But they can only deportation. But they can only be deported to either their home country if their home country is willing to take them back or to a safe third country. Now that safe third country is rwanda , safe third country is rwanda, but we just dont know. Its up in the air as to whether rwanda will work. If rwanda doesnt work, they need a safe third country or this whole plan just crumbles. Crumbles. Mark, im sure you saw in the papers Suella Braverman remarks over the weekend that keir starmer is sabotage , dodging her starmer is sabotage, dodging her plans, blocking her plans, using a web of cronies , legal a web of cronies, legal activists. Et cetera. Et cetera. To put the block on her plans to stop the boats. Do you think theres some truth to that . Well , i theres some truth to that . Well, i mean, thats her narrative. You know, who are we narrative. You know, who are we to say whether there there is truth in that . At the end of the day, i think all i can say on thatis day, i think all i can say on that is that, yes, there is no doubt that there are many groupings who are coming forward at this time in opposing to a lot of the plans that the government is putting forward. But whether that is coordinated by the likes of keir starmer, who knows . I think theres who knows . I think theres certainly groups that would say that there are motivation in this is for the care and welfare of these Asylum Seekers coming across or the other groups who are opposed to the likes of the bibby stockholm barge or indeed the air base plans. They say theyre doing that because theyre doing that because theyre very concerned about their communities. Well, thank you very much indeed , mark, for bringing us up indeed, mark, for bringing us up to date on all of that. Our Homeland Security editor live from portland. So moving on, the from portland. So moving on, the culture, media and Sport Committee has called on the government to do more to tackle so called tech abuse. Thats the use of smart tech to coerce and control victims of Domestic Abuse. Evidence submitted to the committees inquiry suggested that the majority of Domestic Abuse cases now involve some form of cyber equipment, abuse cases now involve some form of cyber equipment , such abuse cases now involve some form of cyber equipment, such as spyware, to monitor the movements of abuse victims. Movements of abuse victims. Yes, the committees report also concluded that the criminal justice response to the threat posed by tech is lacking. Posed by tech is lacking. Well, lets speak to Senior Operations tech abuse manager at refuge. Thats Emma Pickering , refuge. Thats Emma Pickering, who gave evidence to the inquiry. And Dame Caroline dinenage mp who is chair of the Culture Media and Sport Committee. Emma, media and Sport Committee. Emma, lets start with you. First of all, one of the things that is understandable that people might forget about in how abusers are doing this is even say with your netflow fix password when you log on to your netflix account that can be a way of people tracking you. Tracking you. Yeah. So in that instance , yeah. So in that instance, your desktop when you log on to the desktop version of netflix , the desktop version of netflix, it will give an ip address and it will give an ip address and it will give an ip address and it will give a location. So its important if people are fleeing that we make sure that their accounts are secure, their devices are secure and Location Services are off. So it minimises the risk of the perpetrator being able to locate them. Is this worse than you expected to be when you looked into it . Because theres all sorts of different devices that are being used now, arent there . Smart speakers, Baby Monitors . Monitors . Yes. Yes. So the team has yes. Yes. So the team has been around for seven years now. So ive been doing this work for several years. And at the beginning, what we were seeing was harassment calls, was harassment via calls, messages, to share messages, threats to share intimate harassment on intimate images, harassment on social media and those very much still exist. But what were seeing now is an escalation. So were seeing complex forms were seeing more complex forms of Technology Facilitated of technology, facilitated abuse. The misuse of abuse. So the misuse of stalkerware Parental Monitoring apps, tracking applications , us apps, tracking applications, us the misuse of home devices, as you mentioned , their baby you mentioned, their baby monitoring apps and smart doorbells , Smart Speakers, doorbells, Smart Speakers, etcetera. So it is escalating and theres more devices on the market. So its increasing the risk. Risk. Okay. Well, lets talk to caroline dinenage. Caroline anne, what do you want to see happen there . What are you calling for in terms of how this can be can be fixed by by Tech Companies . What we can do about it . It . Well, were not talking about layering on more regulation for the government because theres you know, clearly theres a lot more we can do to build a bit more we can do to build a bit more of a coordinated response to this. This is a big issue. Every household now pretty much has Smart Speakers , virtual has Smart Speakers, virtual assistants, wearable fitness trackers, the government figures themselves say that on average , themselves say that on average, there are nine connected devices in every household in the uk. In every household in the uk. But what the what the inquiry found is that there needs to be a much better criminal justice response and understanding. And response and understanding. And weve seen with the refuge example all that youve just heard that too often police are not necessarily properly trained in the Digital Skills and also there needs to be a much more awareness amongst the justice and police around the Specialist Services that support Domestic Abuse victims. People like refuge that youve heard who have for many years worked on this and have a huge amount of expertise having said that, i do think the industry has a role to play think the industry has a role to play and government has a role to play in bringing manufacturers together. So were also asking for the office for product safety to form a kind of tech abuse working group, if you like. So theres a greater focus on security features and how to close those kind of security loopholes that allow Domestic Abuse to perpetuate. Caroline for the committee, the committee that you are chair of has, of course, published this report has given various recommendations. Recommendations. How widespread is this as a problem and have you heard some quite harrowing stories about how smart tech is being used too . Well, abuse people , yeah, too . Well, abuse people, yeah, its very widespread and thats why we were concerned about it and thats why weve put out this report to kind of draw peoples attention to it. The refuge, calculate that more than 50 of victims of abuse, some form of tech or digital abuse is included in it. And the Suzy Lamplugh trust have said that in 100 of stalking cases now , theres some form of cases now, theres some form of tech being used. So its widespread. And, you know, widespread. And, you know, government figures themselves say that there will be 24 billion interconnected devices worldwide wide by 2050. So this is only going to be a growing problem, which is why we need to do everything we can to get a grip of it and make sure we understand the risks. Clearly, these connected devices these these connected devices are also able to offer the solution. In many cases, you know, they can boost our safety and our security. They obviously make things lot easier around make things a lot easier around the household, but we need to make sure that theyre not being abused, and one of the abused, used. And one of the most worrying things we saw with some our evidence that we some of our evidence that we took is too often it seems that victims the ones are victims are the ones who are advised to change their behaviour rather than being protected. Yeah Emma Pickering from refuge. Lets just come back to you for the last question. Thats an interesting point. Dame interesting point. That Dame Caroline has just made, isnt it . That the onus should not be on victims to change their on the victims to change their behaviour . Behaviour . No, no, exactly. But what we do is we empower survivors to use technology safely because what we find quite often is survivors are at a disadvantage. So their perpetrators handed them the device. They have set up the device. They have very up the device. They have very limited access to the features. So we need to do a lot of work with empowering survivors to use tech safely. Also as caroline was mentioning, its about making sure that when products are designed , survivors have are designed, survivors have access the features so they access to the features so they can make changes to their accounts because right now theyre limited. So they dont always access the always have access to the features to be able to make any safety features within the account. Thats a problem as account. So thats a problem as well. Alongside agency well. But alongside agency awareness, really need awareness, what we really need to raise awareness to do is raise awareness publicly as well, because many people dont understand and the misuse technology and also as misuse of technology and also as a were also normalising technology, facilitated abuse by the sharing of passwords. The sharing of our location, the sharing of our location, the sharing of our online accounts thats normalising this type of abuse. Thats normalising this type of abuse. So we really need to kind abuse. So we really need to kind of push the push the message widespread as well as agencies. Absolutely. Well, you are pushing that message and you are raising to us this raising awareness to us this afternoon here on the live desk. Thank very much. Thank you very much. Emma pickering refuge and dame pickering from refuge and Dame Caroline dinenage mp whos chair of the Culture Media and Sport Committee. And its crazy how you can well technology will always be used for malicious , malicious used for malicious, malicious intent is there . Weve got to be safe anyway. Make sure you have your credit card or mobile with you. That warm feeling inside from boxt boilers proud sponsors of weather on gb news alex deakin here with your latest weather updates from the met office for gb news. A few showers scattered about today, most places will have today, but most places will have a fine monday. The winds light bit sunshine at times coming bit of sunshine at times coming through. A bit of through. We will see a bit of cloud and rain coming in across the south tonight and tomorrow from weather feature. But from this weather feature. But generally, little ridge generally, a little ridge of high bringing a High Pressure bringing most a fine the main fine day today. The main exception scotland. Exception across scotland. Well, we see scattering we are going to see a scattering of showers. Theyll come and go through the day, some through the day, could see some heavier the evening. Heavier ones during the evening. The odd shower over northern england. Most england, england. But most of england, wales, dry some wales, Northern Ireland dry some cloud, well see a bit cloud, yes, but well see a bit of sunshine times, lifting of sunshine at times, lifting the the low the temperatures into the low 20s, 20 to 23 across the 20s, maybe 20 to 23 across the south east. Most places, though only high teens again only in the high teens yet again. Will be. And the cloud will be thickening the south west of thickening in the south west of england. Is going push england. That is going to push into wales as well. So turning quite here through the quite cloudy here through the evening. Odd light evening. Again, the odd light shower really, and then some heavier showers for Northern Ireland and scotland, but they should tend fade should tend to fade quite quickly through evening. So quickly through this evening. So many north many places across the north having a clear night actually turning quite cool. Temperatures down single figures in down into single figures in rural spots. But the cloud and the of rain making for the outbreaks of rain making for a grey, damp, drizzly start in south wales and southwest england. Bit england. The coast here a bit drab first thing, and thats thicker cloud with some outbreaks of light rain and drizzle will push into the midlands and then eventually into parts of south east england to england, to northern england, Northern Ireland, scotland, ireland, southern scotland, most places with places here dry and bright with sunny spells, a few showers sunny spells, just a few showers across the north. Again, across the far north. And again, temperatures the high temperatures mostly in the high teens that warm feeling inside from boxt boilers proud sponsors of weather on gb news welcome back to the live desk on gb news. Now what do you think about this . Is it fair to have to pay more for your parking using coins than it is to use your mobile . Because that is what one council is doing in south london . Yes so paul hawkins is in sutton for us this morning in south london. Paul, thank you very much indeed forjoining us live from sutton. So tell us, how are residents taking this. Residents taking this. Its obviously not a scientific survey, but those that weve spoken to this morning, some have said that they love the convenience of using an app to pay for their parking. Others have said, look , it shouldnt be discriminatory, which is the word that the rac are using. And the government, when they talk about digital exclusion, the words of a cabinet minister, michael gove earlier this year when he was talking to councils who use some which are using exclusively apps to pay for their parking in the london borough of sutton , saying that, borough of sutton, saying that, look, were not were not doing that. Were not purely keeping it to app only, but it is one it is £2 to pay for an hours worth of parking in the borough. Its £3 if you use cash and that is where some of the controversy lies. Now were going to hear from the london borough of sutton in just a moment. But first of all, this is what people have been telling us about paying with cash versus using app when comes to using your app when it comes to paying using your app when it comes to paying in the paying for parking in the borough because borough people because none of them phones and apps. Them have got phones and apps. The old people are going to pay the old people are going to pay cash. The Old Fashioned way, so paying people so theyre paying more people that like the that cant afford it, like the apps. If want here, apps. If they want to park here, theyre to pay more than theyre going to pay more than if a young person could just pick up their phone and go on the come here, i just want if i come here, i just want to things fairly quickly. To do things fairly quickly. Yeah, go to a couple of shops, go home. I dont want to come to download the app. What about what about using the line thats here so the phone line thats here so you can so you can get a discounted rate there. If you phoneit discounted rate there. If you phone it up and use your card. Oh, thats thats big writing isnt oh, thats thats big writing isni dont really carry cash. I dont really carry cash. I dont really carry cash. I dont really carry cash. I cant and i dont yeah. So i cant and i dont want to to the pay station want to walk to the pay station with so like sounds with my toddler. So like sounds lazy, but its just way more convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To pay convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To pay your app. Convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To payso your app. Convenient, isnt it . Yeah. To payso your. About whether its so issues about whether its discriminatory or not. Also issues about the way the signs have been displayed. As you heard there , chatting earlier to heard there, chatting earlier to the good residents of the london borough of sutton. This is what the cabinet member, the councillor responsible for parking in the borough told us earlier about why theyre introducing these charges. Paul introducing these charges. Paul we must leave it because we need to take you straight to portland in dorset, where we understand more people are now about to board the bibby stockholm barge i a m a number boarded the morning and that is the bus arriving now to take them onto the barge. There could be 500 men on board over the next few months and were hearing reports that there are people, a lot of people there to welcome them, presenting them with gift packages of flowers and maps and even shampoo as they board that that vessel. Its a pretty controversial call. What is happening there at the moment . I mean, i wonder how i wonder how many people are actually on board that bus because its quite extraordinary that theyre not able to get 500 people onto there. T there. Could just be could just be a there. Could just be a couple there could just be a couple of dozen a handful. Of dozen or a handful. But that is partly because lawyers are already intervening. There are some Asylum Seekers who were due to board the barge today , but the lawyers have today, but the lawyers have stopped it. They are protesting at them having to move onto a barge from a hotel in the first place, describing it as a floating prison. But there you are seeing pictures of the bus arriving where a number of Asylum Seekers are about to board the Refugee Charity care for calais. They have stopped the transfer of several Asylum Seekers. They have described it as a quasi floating prison. They say its inhumane, but we were heanng say its inhumane, but we were hearing from our home and security editor mark white a short time ago , he actually went short time ago, he actually went on board. Hes had a look around and he says that it is basic but safe. Well, theres a restaurant, a gym well, theres a restaurant, a gym , a games room, so its not gym, a games room, so its not really quite right in my view, to depict it as something absolutely terrible and awful. But its quite interesting how this has been such a huge news story because it represents whats gone wrong with the governments immigration policy. It represents its what local opposition there is to these types of moves. But it opposition there is to these types of moves. But it is quite interesting that the government have said that it may not for be quite a while that this this is part of the governments plan to get people out of hotels because theyre saying its costing too much. Some £6 million a day. So a floating barge, they believe , is floating barge, they believe, is the answer. They they also believe former raf bases are the answer. And also you. Marquis. Marquis is now a destination for Asylum Seekers , potentially, but Asylum Seekers, potentially, but you are now looking at live pictures of portland in dorset. Thatis pictures of portland in dorset. That is the bibi, a pictures of portland in dorset. That is the bibi , a stockholm that is the bibi, a stockholm barge where a number of Asylum Seekers have already arrived earlier to today they and a bus has just arrived where more Asylum Seekers will be boarding 500 single men in total. Asylum seekers will be boarding 500 single men in total. We 500 single men in total. We understand over the next few months. We will stay with this breaking story. And that is the third bus that has arrived. So i dont know whether there will be more to come. Well keep you updated as and when it happens. As and when it happens. But first, lets get the latest News Headlines with ray addison. Addison. 2 33. Im ray addison in the newsroom. And our top story, as weve been hearing, buses are starting to arrive to the bibby stockholm to deliver migrants to the controversial facility. The first bus arrived earlier today, which was met with protesters calling for a stop to the use of what they described as a prison barge. Another bus we just saw moments ago arriving there at the controversial facility. Of the controversial facility. Of course, its not yet known exactly how many Asylum Seekers have moved into the barge, but more are expected later. Have moved into the barge, but more are expected later. Now, for those of you watching on television an we can see live footage of the bibby stockholm and, of course, the gangway which the men will be using to enter the vessel today. Refugee charity care for calais saying that several migrants did not board the barge today as their transfers were cancelled by lawyers. Of course , this follows lawyers. Of course, this follows delays caused by health and safety concerns, including the Firefighters Union warning that the barge is a potential death trap. Safeguarding minister sarah dines did say earlier , of sarah dines did say earlier, of course, that those concerns were not justified. And well, not justified. And well, multiple reports suggest that the government is considering plans to house people who arrive in the uk by unauthorised means on an island in the atlantic ocean. Ascension island is a british overseas territory located over 4000 miles away, currently houses two military bases and has a population of around 800 non german residents. The proposals are a possible plan b if the governments rwanda scheme fails. But downing street officials saying that its confident it will win the Upcoming Court case well from next year, fines will triple for businesses and landlords who knowingly support Illegal Migrants coming into the country under new government plans. Bosses who employ Asylum Seekers could face fines of up to £60,000 for each breach. Dutch Prime Minister also saying that hes increased police raids by 50 to clamp down on illegal workers. And finally , the workers. And finally, the lionesses have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the womens world cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over nigeria. England scored four goals while nigeria netted only two following the 123 minute match. Chloe kelly scored the winning goal following other successful shots from beth england , rachel daley and alex england, rachel daley and alex greenwood. Prince and princess greenwood. Prince and princess of wales have congratulate the team while downing street said Prime Minister rishi sunak wished them the best of luck for the next round. Okay you can get more on all of those stories by visiting our website, gbnews. Com welcome back to the live desk on gb news. In the last few minutes, more Asylum Seekers have arrived in portland in dorset to board the bibby stockholm barge. This is the bus stockholm barge. This is the bus carrying them. Were not too sure how many were on the bus, but we do understand that over the next few months, months, up to 500 single men will be on the bibby stockholm floating barge. Bibby stockholm floating barge. This has angered a number of charities. In fact, lawyers have intervened in the last couple of hours, cancelling the transfer of some Asylum Seekers, saying that the barge is a quasi floating prison and is inhumane. Jane. Joining us now to react to this is political commentator suzanne evans. Thank you very much indeed, suzanne. Youve seen the images. Hi, suzanne. Youve seen the images there of that bus taking migrants to that site, that barge. It seems to be site, that barge. It seems to be very controversial. Well, weve very controversial. Well, weve also heard , as pip outlined also heard, as pip outlined there, that some lawyers have have unsurprisingly, got involved and have been successful in cancelling , at successful in cancelling, at least for now, some of these transfers. Do you think this barge is a quasi prison or do you think this is all a fuss over nothing . Over nothing . Well, its quite interesting, isnt it, that the very people who are complaining about the conditions on this barge are those lawyers who are trying to stop this happening. And the stop this happening. And the government is going to be absolutely delighted by these photographs, which are going to be beamed across the world, be beamed all across the world, because it thinks it will help dampen down the pull factor for the migrants coming across the channel small boats around channel in small boats around 1000 a day. Lets not forget that. 1000 a day. Lets not forget that. A thousand a day. So and that. A thousand a day. So and that. A thousand a day. So and that is, of course, what precisely what they want to stop. So these images will be very amte power , if you very good. Amte power, if you like, for migrants thinking about making that kind of journey. But i suppose a lot of journey. But i suppose a lot of people might be thinking its a bit rich for complaints about this , this barge being used as this, this barge being used as a floating oh, susanna , we seem to floating oh, susanna, we seem to have lost you. We will try and get suzanne back. Oh shes still there. Sorry, suzanne. We had a slight tech issue, but. But do carry. On do carry on. Suzanne, am back . Right. Right. You were mid flow. You were mid flow. You were mid flow. I was mid flow. So i think some people think its a bit rich for people to complain about the conditions of this barge, liking it to a floating prison. Lets not forget that every single one of these single male men have come across male men who have come across the have a sense the channel have in a sense committed of paying committed a crime of paying people traffickers to get themselves into this country illegally. So as i say, i think many people might think its a bit rich for people to be complaining on that basis and calling it a floating prison. Lets not also forget that this barge, this particular barge , in barge, this particular barge, in fact, has been used by several companies to house workers and legitimate workers who are here. I mean, it was used to house Asylum Seekers in the netherlands and germany as well. But its also been used by construction workers for oil and gas companies. So conditions are pretty good on the barge. I know theres been some reports earlier in week that the earlier in the week that the government want it to government doesnt want it to too be posh too exclusive. Too be posh and too exclusive. Again to try and reduce that pull factor. Again to try and reduce that pull factor. But i think for me, the bottom line here is that this is really a sticking plaster. As said, a thousand plaster. As i said, a thousand migrants a day are coming a week sorry, are coming across the channel. This barge is going to house, what, a few dozen of them. It really is a sticking plaster. Its up to 500. Its not its not going to actually. Well, thats it. Thats like, you know, just a few days. Migrants on it. What are we going to do with the rest the bottom line is that the governments got to get a handle on actually processing asylum, immigration claims much, much faster. Theres a immigration claims much, much faster. Theres a huge immigration claims much, much faster. Theres a huge backlog faster. Theres a huge backlog at the moment, around 160,000. I believe. And add housing these people because their claims havent been processed is costing around £2 billion a yeah costing around £2 billion a year. That surely has got to be the solution to the issue is actually making sure that people are processed much more quickly so that genuine Asylum Seekers can get to stay in this country. And those who are simply trying it on and dont really have a good case, cant the home office , as i understand now, needs to process 2800 claims every every day if they are going to meet the Prime Ministers target of tackling this, this this legacy of 92,000. I think the backlog is the governments never going to do that, is it . Not without a massive hiring programme. And of course, then theres always time to train, time taken to train people up anyway. So no, i dont think thats realistic at all. So i suppose in a sense, yes, tackling the backlog is one thing, but there is also weve got stop the boats coming got to stop the boats coming across. And until that can be done, the problems just going to keep on escalating. Now as i said, the government will be delighted with these pictures because send a message because it does send a message to anyone who wants to try and make journey. Dont well make this journey. Dont well put you on a bus. Youll be shipped to a prison ship, quote unquote. So theyll be very unquote. So theyll be very pleased for that. But whether or not is going be enough not that is going to be enough to people coming, well, to stop people coming, well, i very it will, very much doubt that it will, suzanne. Im sure if this is going im not sure if this is going to deter anyone who wants to make crossing, be make that crossing, to be honest. Think do look a bit honest. I think we do look a bit maybe a little bit of a joke or the hoo ha about this particular site, this particular barge. But there you go. Well see what happens. Well see if does happens. Well see if it does work as deterrent. Thank work as a deterrent. Thank you very indeed. Susan very much indeed. Susan evans there. Commentator, very much indeed. Susan evans there. Her commentator, very much indeed. Susan evans there. Her takecommentator, very much indeed. Susan evans there. Her take on1mentator, very much indeed. Susan evans there. Her take on the ntator, very much indeed. Susan evans there. Her take on the buses giving her take on the buses that are arriving full of migrants to this barge site in portland. Something completely different now, but it might also get you going because a pub landlord in stoke on trent has called the Animal Rights group peta. Absolutely ridiculous. After after put my teeth back in after they demanded a change to the name of his boozer. They demanded a change to the name of his boozer. Yes. Name of his boozer. Yes. Mike newton, the owner of the old bulldog, has said the charity wrote to him asking him to rename his pub from the old bulldog to the old the cheek of that because the current name apparently encourages people to buy sickness prone breeds. Buy these sickness prone breeds. Our Midlands Reporter will hollis for us now a hollis has more for us now a proper british boozer with a proper british boozer with a proper british boozer with a proper british name. The old bulldog , a name the old bulldog, a name thats now been splashed across the National News. And all because of this bulldog , because of this bulldog, atticus, mike and his wife laurie rescued him. Laurie rescued him. If you look closely into his mouth, come on, sweetie, you can see that his teeth have been ground down with an angle gnnden ground down with an angle grinder, which is usually a sign that he was a bait dog in the dog fighting when bought dog fighting when mike bought the sea lion, a humble corner pub in stoke on trent, he fancied new name and thought fancied a new name and thought atticus breed perfect. Atticus as breed was perfect. But not everyone agrees. Animal rights group peta reckons it glorifies brachycephalic breeds of dog like bulldogs and puqs breeds of dog like bulldogs and pugs that develop breathing difficulties and other Health Issues because of their squashed snouts and skull shape. They sent michael letter telling him to scrap the name from this letter on my phone and essentially it says what we want to do is to get rid of the name the old bulldog , replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old bulldog, replace it with the old mutt. The old mutt. Well, i was really quite cross about it because i felt that it was intrusive and it was patronising. And it was also an patronising. And it was also an attack on a cherished national symbol, the bulldog, which we love in this country. It was an attack on Small Business, peta, which stands for people for the ethical treatment of animals , ethical treatment of animals, says that promoting breeds with breathing impairments normalises their suffering and encourages others to get them. Others to get them. People getting out of the dog if they want the dog. If he loved the breed of the dog, it was called the sea lion before. So did that encourage people keep sea lions . I know mike, whos a conservative parliamentary candidate, says the name is staying. The name is staying. Well, its obviously a woke agenda globally on many fronts, isnt but you know, here isnt there . But you know, here in the midlands then theyve met the because were not the match because were not changing name of the pub you changing the name of the pub you know, our bulldogs and know, we love our bulldogs and were not backing down on this. Were not backing down on this. The stoke pub was renamed once , doing it twice. Well, that once, doing it twice. Well, that would be barking mad. Nice dog. Nice dog. Nice dog. Nice pub will hollis gb news in stoke on trent pretty contentious earlier we spoke to petas Senior Campaigns manager, kate werner. Well, she defended their calls to change the pubs name for the end of breeding dogs. You know,. But these bull you know,. But these bull breeds, they suffer more than than most because of the, like i say, the exaggerated features that people want them to have. That people want them to have. So were calling for this pub to change its name to the old mutt. And we encourage everybody to adopt mutts because they are the healthiest dogs. And we have an overpopulation crisis acas with animals in with dogs, in shelters, you know, thousands are given up every year, thousands of them. Are these thousands of them. Who are these flat dogs because theyre flat faced dogs because theyre so to look after . So expensive to look after . Not im not sure about a pub changing its name, but i do agree with the message of people adopting rescue dogs. I have three. And i promise you its one of the best things you can ever do. Watching their transformation is incredible. Yes, my family cockapoo probably is a bit of a designer breed. Yes. Yes. Should have gone for a is a designer breed. But it is also very lovely. But yeah. Rescue rescue all the way for me. Now. Finally, the duke duchess of finally, the duke and duchess of sussex the film sussex have bought the film rights to a romantic novel. The novel, set in canada, explores the childhood trauma of a character who, interestingly lost a parent in a car crash and also tackles mental Health Issues. Does that sound familiar . This announcement follows harry and meghans 20 million podcasting deal with spotify that ended in june. Will they be that ended in june. Will they be able to revive their career on hopes of romance . Joining us now is charles rea, former royal correspondent for the sun. So this is a steamy novel. Theyve got the rights to. Yeah well, its so, so the blurb says its also very , very similar to the also very, very similar to the harry and meghan story. Its got drugs, rock and roll, alcohol , the death of roll, alcohol, the death of a parent in a car crash. Uh, depression. And, you know , other depression. And, you know, other things that are likely similar similarity you just mentioned. Its part of it is based in toronto. Uh its interesting that theyve moved now away from in front of the camera to behind the camera with this, with this book. I mean, theres a lot of questions being asked in hollywood already as to why the publisher players have chosen harry and meghan instead of some more well known publisher as producers , you know, producers producers, you know, producers whove got some success. Its because at the moment harry and meghans track record isnt that great, but its certainly going to garner a lot of publicity and also, from what ive read about the author, she actually sounds a little bit of a sycophant to this canadian author, carly fortune, of course she does. Shes shes she just loves harry and meghan. I dont know whether thats why theyve decided to work with her. Oh, im sure that im sure the fact that its harry and meghan and the connection to the royal a big factor royal family is a big factor in choosing and choosing harry and meghan. I i dont doubt meghan. I dont. I dont doubt that one thing. But lets that for one thing. But lets not well, you know, not forget as well, you know, theyre producers, so theyre going have only have going to have to not only have they fund the so called they had to fund the so called £3 million, theyre going to they had to fund the so called £3 mto on, theyre going to they had to fund the so called £3 mto fund theyre going to they had to fund the so called £3 mto fund allheyre going to they had to fund the so called £3 mto fund all there going to they had to fund the so called £3 mto fund all the finance to they had to fund the so called £3 mto fund all the finance for have to fund all the finance for the film. You know , the payment the film. You know, the payment for the director and the staff, the actors and everything else. And lets not forget , and also, lets not forget, hollywood is on strike at the moment. Theres not to be moment. Theres not going to be any movement on this for any movement on this on this for job some time yet. Thats a very good point, charles. And this all sounds like a lot of hard work like rather a lot of hard work for the pair. For the pair. Yeah, thatll be a novel that thatll be novel for them to do to some do some hard work. So far theyve had theyve easy theyve had it quite easy. Lets, lets not forget theyve had a netflix uh, um, a uh, involvement they produced, they produced their six part slagging off the royal family. Theyve had the Oprah Winfrey interview. They havent done much else , you they havent done much else, you know, apart. I mean, people are very critical of harry and meghan and their ability, you know , to carry this through. But know, to carry this through. But is it is it not, you know, a potential early welcome departure for them . They might actually be quite good at this. And lets not forget, they do have to earn a living. Living. Absolutely. They may well be i mean, may be proved quite wrong and they may well be proved the best producers that that hollywood has ever literally produced. But itll be literally produced. But itll be interesting to see how far it goes and how the film comes out. At the end of the day. And if at the end of the day. And if this film is a success and it rakes in all their all the money that they want and everything else, best luck to them. Ive else, best of luck to them. Ive got problems at all with them got no problems at all with them making whatsoever. Uh, i making money whatsoever. Uh, i just some doubt that they just have some doubt that they have the ability to carry it have got the ability to carry it through. Just dont understand why i just dont understand why meghan wants to be behind the camera. Well, she might put herself in in the movie. I think she probably could be even elbows. Elbows to the front, i think. Anyway thank you very much indeed, charles rea, royal correspondent there. Correspondent there. So that is it for the live desk. Thank you very much for your company today, Patrick Christies is up next. And its somebody that emily knows rather well. And ive seen him before. And ive seen him before. And ive seen him before.
