The green slopes by questioning the increasingly regulatory pressure petrol and diesel pressure on petrol and diesel cars, ill be encouraging the Prime Minister to let his inner jaguar roar. If we want to win the next election, oxfam, the scandal ridden charity, now thinks that measuring the success of countries through Gross Domestic Product gdp is an act of colonialism grown. Perhaps they would rather we measured economic success based on a countrys number of Green Smoothie bars and diversity consultants and how the former president donald j. Trump never out of news, is once again set to appear in court at the end of this hour, this time for as the special counsel sees it, prolific, lies about Election Fraud fuelling the january sixth riots. As ever, polly will be bringing you updates and live happenings as and when they happen. State of the nation starts now. Starts now. Ill also be joined by a perspicacious panel this evening, historian and broadcaster dr. Tessa dunlop and former ukip leader henry bolton. As ever, i want to hear from you. Its a crucial part of the programme. Email me. Mel mog at gb com. But now its gb news dot com. But now its time for the news of the day with middlehurst. With polly middlehurst. Jacob thank you. Well, good evening to you. The top story from the newsroom tonight is that the bank of england has raised its Interest Rate for the 14th time in a row. Its increasing from 5 to 5. 25. Thats the highest base rate since 2008. The bank saying that it expects inflation to be halved by the end of the year. And the chancellor jeremy hunt, telling gb news the governments plan is working. Well. The bank plan is working. Well. The bank of england forecast today say that we will avoid recession and in a years time well get inflation down to about 3, 2. 8, i think is the number. So although its very tough when Interest Rates go up for families or for businesses that have got loans , what those have got loans, what those forecasts are saying today is that if we stick to the plan, it is working and we will end up with a soft landing and we can avoid a recession. Avoid a recession. Well, the shadow chancellor rachel reeves, says the government needs to take action. A family thats looking to remortgage their property is going to be paying , remortgage their property is going to be paying, on remortgage their property is going to be paying , on average going to be paying, on average more than £200 extra every single month. And for some people its much more than that. The government needs to take responsibility for the fact that inflation in the uk is much higher than it is in comparable countries. Comparable countries. Well, donald trump has made his way to washington dc. Lets his way to washington dc. Lets show you the pictures from a short time ago. Donald trump arriving at ronald reagan, Washington National airport ahead of his court appearance. Hes about to head by car, we understand , roughly a five mile understand, roughly a five mile drive to the Barrett Prettyman us courthouse in washington, dc. The Court Building itself just steps from the capitol building, where, of course , those deadly where, of course, those deadly riots of january. 2021 happened. Riots of january. 2021 happened. And he is accused of attempting to overturn joe bidens election in 2020. We, as i say, hes due in 2020. We, as i say, hes due in court 9 pm. Uk time. Well keep you updated with the latest on that, of course, as information reaches us. Meanwhile, here at home, the high street retailer wilko has warned its on the brink of collapse , putting around 12,000 collapse, putting around 12,000 jobs at risk. The boss of the homeware chain says he expects the company to go into insolvency after failing to secure a takeover. Wilko has about 400 stores in the uk and its filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators as now five activists that scaled the Prime Ministers personal home in North Yorkshire have been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and a public nuisance. The protesters, draped rishi sunak home in black fabric in protest against the new north sea oil and gas licences that were recently granted by rishi sunak. Were recently granted by rishi sunak. Gb news asked the sunak. Gb news asked the greenpeace ceo if its justified to turn up at the Prime Ministers private home. We checked before going. We made sure there was nobody there. It was planned with utmost care. We delivered the utmost care. We delivered the message that what hes doing is unacceptable in a climate emergency. Hes the Prime Minister and this decision. Let me finish is on him. Well, you can see more of that interview on dan wootton tonight, just under an hours time, 9 00 here with gb news across the uk on your tv, in your car on Digital Radio and on your car on Digital Radio and on your Smart Speaker by saying play gb news right now though, time to go back to. Jacob de time to go back to. Jacob de dufing time to go back to. Jacob de during the pandemic, the bank of england created a total of £470 billion through quantitative easing. Easing. The bank bought government bonds as a means of securing demand keep cost of debt demand to keep the cost of debt down, government borrowed down, as the government borrowed over £400 billion to rescue the economy. As we locked down. But the later rounds of quantitative easing implemented by the bank were excessive and inflationary. The transmission mechanism between the money supply and inflation is not entirely clear, but the two are on questionably linked. But the two are on questionably unked. So but the two are on questionably linked. So when others realise there was a problem, the bank ignored them and was slow to raise rates. Despite repeated raise rates. Despite repeated warnings that inflation wasnt transitory like the famous ostrich, its head remains stuck in the sand and now the ostriches are flapping in a panic, increasing rates more than seems to be necessary. Than seems to be necessary. Today, the bank announced the Monetary Policy committee announced yet another rise in the base rate of 0. 25, 25 basis points, a quarter of a taking it to 5. 25 overall. This is the 14th consecutive rate rise , and 14th consecutive rate rise, and its come from such a low level thats come from 0. 1. So the percentage increase is many times over. Percentage increase is many times over. And sweden has done something very similar. Its central bank been behaving in a similar way to ours with unneeded later rounds of post pandemic quantative easing as well as slowness to increase Interest Rates. And interestingly, our inflation rates have been closely correlated. So thats further correlated. So thats further evidence that the money supply is behind this inflation rise. Is behind this inflation rise. So when quantitative easing was first implemented in 2008, it didnt cause us cpi inflation because the money was essentially contained within the banking system. It was short bnng banking system. It was short bring up banks that they continue their operations actions. But the quantitative easing during the pandemic went straight peoples pockets. Straight into peoples pockets. It effectively just printing it was effectively just printing money, printing £5, £50 notes and stuffing them in peoples pockets through policies such as furlough. So why is the bank getting this wrong . Well its dominated by bureaucratic groupthink. Like what . The groupthink. Like what . The Monetary Policy committee needs is diversity of thought rather than uniformity of opinion. When the Committee First began its members had different opinions and perspectives , which made and perspectives, which made a success of Interest Rate setting. Weve talked about the effects of these increases on mortgage holders before, but its a very real problem for households and indeed for businesses, for households as 35,000 people every week are finding their fixed rate mortgages expire , which could be mortgages expire, which could be one 1. 5, and they move to variable rates, which could be about 6 to 6. 5. An enormous increase in their Monthly Payment because of these new higher rates for business. Well, there are real consequences to who it emerged that wilko has issued a notice of intention to appoint an administrator to homes and Household Goods retailer. Homes and Household Goods retailer. This is homes and Household Goods retailer. This is a homes and Household Goods retailer. This is a serious risk of collapse at this point if it cant find a buyer within the next two weeks. And any business thats taken out loans will be in this position. If the loans are floating, we saw some of this with thames water too, so the bank kept rates unrealistically low for too long. It pumped money out into the system and now the consequence losses have come through in inflation in. But having said that, much higher Interest Rates, it hasnt waited to see what the consequences will be. And this is important because inflation is a lagging indicator. Its one of the last indicators to move up and to manage to get inflation down without a recession is an incredibly difficult, Sensitive Task , which the slightly task, which the slightly clodhopping bank of england may not succeed in. Im very pleased to have Liam Halligan with me this evening. Liam, to have Liam Halligan with me this evening. Liam, i think youve been reporting on this since 7 00 this morning, so thank you for making your day so long, showing proper capitalist work ethic. Do you long, showing proper capitalist work ethic. Do you think the bank has gone from one extreme to the other . To the other . I do indeed. Jacob ive been writing this for many, many months in my telegraph column. I think the bank was far late think the bank was far too late to raising rates , and when to start raising rates, and when it did start raising rates finally late 2021, it was finally in late 2021, it was cautious with very small Interest Rate rises. As a result, rates are now going up further and will stay higher for longer than otherwise would need to be the case. So yes, i agree with you very much. The bank was too slow and it dismissed inflation consistently as transitory. It dismissed the pleadings of people like you and i who said quantitative easing was going to be very inflationary. This covid era qe that had escaped from the banking system, if you like. And thats why the bank of england, in a bid to regain its shattered credibility , is now compounding credibility, is now compounding its earlier errors by keeping rates too high for too long. And its adding a cost to everybody. So theres the Interest Rate cost, but also as it reduces quantitative easing, its taking a loss on the bond selling by not holding them to maturity. Isnt this an even more decision that would more bizarre decision that would cost taxpayers tens of billions of real for money of pounds of real for money losses that are in a sense , its losses that are in a sense, its a mirage. Were now deep into technical territory. Technical territory. The losses that the bank incurs on so called quantitative tightening. But youre right, it isnt cost free to create loads of money and then use that money to buy government bonds. That has a cost. If to buy government bonds. That has a cost. If this to buy government bonds. That has a cost. If this stuff has a cost. If this stuff worked, the roman empire wouldnt have ended. Zimbabwe wouldnt have ended. Zimbabwe would be in the g7 and so on. And it strikes me that the bank of england now has is in danger of england now has is in danger of driving the british economy into a recession that it neednt enter into that is two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Our economy, the men and growth. Our economy, the men and women out there working in it, particularly the Small Business leaders across our economy, they have shown tremendous resilience over the last year or so, a year , you know, less than six months ago, the bank of england was saying we were about to enter a year long recession and they were wrong. The bank of were proved wrong. The bank of england say said today we wouldnt recession wouldnt enter a recession despite their 14 rate rises. How come they were . I dont think theyre going to right now ehhen well, the power of it , 35,000 well, the power of it, 35,000 households every week finding that their Interest Rates have gone up fourfold. Thats gone up about fourfold. Thats a big chunk out of income. Youve big chunk out of income. Youve seen private credit declining very sharply in the latest money supply figures. There is a big supply figures. There is a big tightening in money supply beyond what i think the bank would have liked to have seen. Well, the Deputy Governor of the bank of england, ben broadbent, admitted today in the post Decision Press Conference earlier afternoon that he earlier this afternoon that he acknowledges that Monetary Policy , Interest Rate changes policy, Interest Rate changes take between 12 and 18 months, even two years, to work through fully into the system. Of fully into the system. Of course, the impact on Mortgage Rates is almost immediate. If youre coming off a fixed rate as so many tens of thousands of people are, each week, Business Credit also jacob, by the way, 75 of that is on variable rates as well. So i think the bank of england should have been calling its boots holding fire, at least since march when we had 10 or 11 Interest Rate rises in the can to see the impact and were seeing the pain that this is incurring these Interest Rate rises not just on households as their Mortgage Rates go up by a huge factor, as youve just highlighted. Were also seeing it in business. Wilko is a major retailer in this country. It has 400 outlets. It has 12,000 employees. Wilkos tend to be in high streets in northern towns and midlands cities. Its not and midlands cities. Its not really the kind of place that worries a lot of our political and media class based around westminster with respect, but its a real high street perennial. They have issued this nofice perennial. They have issued this notice of intent to go into administration in hopefully in the next couple weeks. They the next couple of weeks. They can and a rescue can find a buyer and a rescue plan. Plan. But employees is but 12,000 employees is a really Serious Business and its the increase in Interest Rates and Business Rates that are having the effect on it. Its increased Cash Payments out of the business. Lets not overlook what Business Rates are. I know you have campaigned , youve have campaigned, youve mentioned this from the backbenches. Many times. Business rates are taxes that businesses pay on the rateable value of their premises. Whether those premises are rented or owned, you have to pay Business Rates even. If you dont make rates even. If you dont make any profit, even if you dont. Any profit, even if you dont. Take a single pound in revenue as a business, particularly as a shop, you still owe those Business Rates to the taxman and to the exchequer. They put high street retailers at a huge disadvantage to their online competitors. Of online competitors. Many of the online competitors, competitors. Many of the online compeoffshore or in other tax based offshore or in other tax jurisdictions. Thats why ive been for many years been saying for many, many years now tories should be now that the tories should be serious, Business Rates serious, lowering Business Rates that way to that would be a great way to level because you will help level up because you will help to save lot of those northern to save a lot of those northern towns the high are towns where the high streets are hollowed towns where the high streets are holthats a subject we will thats a subject we will have to to. But liam, thank to come back to. But liam, thank you much. Thank you for you very much. Thank you for your very long you. Only your very long day. You. Only get the best service on. Gb get the best service on. Gb news. Dont forget to let me know what you think. Male mortgage cbnnews. Com coming up, should prime let should the Prime Minister let his jaguar plus, his inner jaguar roar . Plus, welcome back. Im still Jacob Rees Mogg and this is state of the nation. Youve been getting in touch with your thoughts. Roy in touch with your thoughts. Roy says raising Interest Rates punishes the innocent with. Punishes the innocent with. Mortgage loans and not the wholesalers who. Are raising wholesalers who. Are raising prices, causing the. Inflation prices, causing the. Inflation ian and jill says this will put more people into poverty. They have brought the country to its knees areas as we cannot knees in all areas as we cannot take any enough is enough. Take any more enough is enough. If were one lesson the if there were one lesson for the conservative party from the recent that recent by elections, its that the not vote to the electorate will not vote to be poor against the be cold and poor against the odds the odds and the pundits, the conservatives odds and the pundits, the consenuxbridge primarily seat in uxbridge primarily because of the anti ulez campaigning took in campaigning that took place in the constituency. Since campaigning that took place in the c theituency. Since campaigning that took place in the c the prime. Since campaigning that took place in the c the Prime Ministerce campaigning that took place in the c the Prime Minister has then, the Prime Minister has been busy talking the talk on a more sensible Energy Policy with new north sea gas and oil licences. Issued along with licences. Issued along with robust talk. About not passing robust talk. About not passing exorbitant net zero costs on to working people. But as i asked the other day, can he also walk the other day, can he also walk the walk . Can he let his inner jaguar roar and firmly come down on of the motorist . On the side of the motorist . Well, a very clear well, theres a very clear policy if he policy that we can pursue if he wants we are wants to do that. We are currently on track to out eu. The eu and ban new the eu and ban all new petrol and by 2030. We must and diesel cars by 2030. We must obviously this date. Net obviously delay this date. Net zero of the defining zero will be one of the defining questions of the election questions of the next election and government grasp and the government must grasp this a seriousness this question with a seriousness it deserves. People will never vote. To be cold and poor, nor vote. To be cold and poor, nor should they. And the should they. And the conservatives must understand this. Im now joined by my brilliant panel, historian dr. Tessa dunlop and former ukip leader bolton. Tessa isnt leader henry bolton. Tessa isnt the uxbridge byelection result the uxbridge byelection result the dont the voters are saying we dont want a democracy want this. We want a democracy that responds needs that responds to our needs and allows improve allows us to improve our standard living. Allows us to improve our sta|iiard living. Allows us to improve our sta|i like living. Allows us to improve our sta|i like you, ring. Allows us to improve our sta|i like you, jacob, but i like you, jacob, but sometimes times it sometimes times i find it incredibly hard to keep my cool around you. And its not just because of global warming. We can turn the air cushion. I find it absolutely staggering. And so. Personally and and so. Personally and politically. Disappointing that politically. Disappointing that your government, of which youre a part of, cant see that occasionally in life when weve just had 27 of the hottest days ever record, there time ever on record, there is a time to and with the ulez case, and with the ulez case, i have never seen such embarrassing levels of conservative glee such conservative of glee over such a suther conservative of glee over such a slither thin, not a victory. I mean, it was a diminutive victory. One that you were expected to lose over other people being tax on there or forced to give up their. Forced to give up their. Polluting vehicles. And i talk about. Polluting vehicles. And i talk about. This very personally. About. This very personally. I live in the inner city. I dont live in the inner city. I dont live in the green glades of somerset, and my daughter has appalling respiratory problems that immediately when we that immediately go when we enter of scotland enter the highlands of scotland to mother. This to visit my mother. This has real real peoples real impact on real peoples lives indeed does. Real impact on real peoples live however, eed does. They are the people that they drive this economy. But furthermore. You talk about the furthermore. You talk about the quality of. Air. Thats what quality of. Air. Thats what youre effectively what youre talking about in london. But a lot of these areas are almost rural. But okay, i can take the argument that that whatever pollution beyond beyond pollution spreads beyond beyond just sort of the streets, if just the sort of the streets, if you point that just the sort of the streets, if yotquality point that just the sort of the streets, if yotquality in point that just the sort of the streets, if yotquality in london,t that just the sort of the streets, if yotquality in london, thereiat just the sort of the streets, if yotquality in london, there is air quality in london, there is no disputing improved, no disputing this has improved, moved will moved immeasurably and will continue as old continue to improve as as old cars in the natural cars get scrapped in the natural course events to male voices. Course of events to male voices. I refuse to allow you to drown me out. According to who . Its my opinion. Tessa. Im not trying to drown you out. My opinion. Drown you out. My opinion. Its. My opinion. Its. My opinion. Its. I have an opinion. I have an opinion. Who . 997 of the air over britain fails to measure up to international standards. Our limit for nitrogen dioxide, which you cant its which you cant see, but its not fashioned black which you cant see, but its not that fashioned black which you cant see, but its not that usedhioned black which you cant see, but its not that used toned black which you cant see, but its not that used to coat lack stuff that used to coat buildings called nitrogen buildings called soot. Nitrogen dioxide levels in this country that measure are four that we measure them on are four times higher than those. If my approach to all this if my approach to all of this is wouldnt breathe is if you wouldnt breathe it, dont air. If you dont put it in the air. If you wouldnt dont put it in wouldnt eat it, dont put it in your food. And if you wouldnt dnnk your food. And if you wouldnt drink it, dont put it in the water. However know water. However you know how i know think all of know because i think all of these rather net these things rather like net zero, jacobs just and zero, as jacobs just said. And were to extend were going to have to extend that the fact is that that date. The fact is that until we have technology in until we have the technology in place can we can we can place and we can we can we can allow across, we allow people to adapt across, we cant do this issue here that cant do this issue here is that the government told people to buy cars. Buy diesel cars. They what the government they did what the government said and now theyre being told for what the for having done what the government says youre going to for having done what the gorpenalised. Ays youre going to for having done what the gorpenalised. So youre going to for having done what the gorpenalised. So why re going to for having done what the gorpenalised. So why im oing to for having done what the gorpenalised. So why im against be penalised. So why im against ulez just allow it ulez i think you just allow it to naturally. People are to happen naturally. People are buying cars year in, buying cleaner cars year in, year and people you hit year out and the people you hit are Business People and the are the Business People and the least off society. Least well off in society. Actually people you but actually the people you hit the least well off in hit arent the least well off in society. You know, a quarter of people mainly people dont drive mainly because to. Because they cant afford to. Lots of the poorest people in the lower socioeconomic groups cant to leave their cant afford to leave their inner city areas. 40,000 people a year die because of polluted air in this country. One of the first ways to get into work and so on is as a delivery driver. So getting people to drive is really important. Getting people on the ladder to prosperity. Ladder to prosperity. The other problem is youre against the curve. Youre going on side of history on the wrong side of history here. Know the direction here. We know the direction is the great green revolution. All right. Weve got weve got a wonderful whig historian here today. But were going to carry on theme because on with the green theme because earlier today, some greenpeace protesters little protesters in a nasty little stunt scaled the home the stunt scaled the home of the Prime Minister and draped his Yorkshire Oil black yorkshire home with oil black fabric. So called activist. Fabric. The so called activist. Its justified their crimes by calling new fossil fuel drilling a frenzy. These pasty vegans dont make a worthy adversary to a mighty jaguar and ought not to be attacking peoples homes. I think attacking peoples homes is really beneath contempt. But is really beneath contempt. But thankfully, the trespassers have been arrested and unsurprisingly , we achieved nothing. So even , we achieved nothing. So even you are not going to defend these dreadful protesters attacking this essay. Attacking this essay. Its b grade gcse level that youve just enunciated down the television lens as they werent nasty. They actually served a wonderful security favour for, i would argue, to the Prime Minister and to other absentee mps to remind them that they need to shore up their security. They they knocked on the door and said, were doing a peaceful protest full rishi protest knowing full well rishi is his la fuel is already on his la fuel guzzling holiday. So i dont think we can. I think attacking somebody home is really beyond the pale. They didnt yes, they didnt attack. I think its unacceptable. Unacceptable because its unacceptable because its the wrong verb. Its entirely unacceptable for them to then to be trespassing and then scaling the Prime Ministers roof. It is. If they tried to do roof. It is. If they tried to do that to my place , as ill tell that to my place, as ill tell you what, if i there , theyd you what, if i was there, theyd get and. And get a hiding and. And absolutely. I think you do raise an interesting point, though, in terms security, because ive terms of security, because ive got concern. Its got a concern. I mean, its a slightly different to the slightly different topic to the one on. But that that one were on. But that that actually that can happen to the Prime Ministers home. But which is why they have shoved its in a funny way, a great thing about our society. If somebody tried that in america, theyd be shot at. Yeah, in this in this country we have politicians who can go about leading a normal life without needing security, without needing security, without needing security, without needing excessive measures at their homes. Without needing excessive measures at their homes. And measures at their homes. And this is a really strong point of our society that politicians are accessible to the people they serve. And if theyre attacked by lunatics of this kind and nasty people, then then that dynamic wont change. It is really nasty to do, but you need to dial down your language because theyre not lunatics. They are. They are. They are nasty, wicked people who do this to somebodys home taking a huge risk because they are terrified. Are terrified. Yeah, it was. Come on. We know at the moment. Tessa. No, look, a petition going around because the two people who protested that bridge are now protested on that bridge are now in of five in prison for a total of five years one long prison sentences. So they be. So they should be. So they should be. So. Theyre going to so. Okay, so theyre going to be. Hope they are, because of be. I hope they are, because of the they are because think this they are because i think this is really nasty thing to do. Is a really nasty thing to do. Appalling in which the appalling way in which our the public to our rights as the public to be able protest been able to protest have been rescinded and removed because they is fine. They have protest is fine. Attacking somebody home attacking somebody whose home is someones attacking somebody whose home is disrupting;omeones attacking somebody whose home is disrupting;omeclives home, disrupting their lives often and often getting in the way of livelihood goods. Way of their livelihood goods. Think its an assault, i think its an assault, isnt it . Its an assault on somebodys look at the street protests. The just stop oil. It risks changing or disrupting peoples lives. Thats an assault on politics. Politicians in this country arent behind security perimeters. And if people have perimeters. And if people have this happen to them, then we will end up going down the american route and well all be hidden. Oh, youre entirely youre entirely right, jacob, because, i mean, we can see sort of i mean, we can see it sort of going back to 60s 50s going back to the 60s and 50s and politicians, the and before politicians, the Prime Minister could walk from downing house of commons. Alec douglas home was Prime Minister, by a few minister, was kidnapped by a few students. But thats but arguably protesters are getting arguably protesters are getting a good sport. Theyre getting ever more desperate and the public order act has actually removed so many of our vital rights as libertarian englishmen or british men and women. And i would also like to point out that people a lot of the young in particular, feel disempowered , powered and panicked by what theyre seeing unfolding in europe at the moment. This inferno of heat, while weve got a little puppet Prime Minister jumping in scotland jumping up and down in scotland where belong, saying jumping up and down in scotland viwell, belong, saying jumping up and down in scotland viwell, going elong, saying jumping up and down in scotland viwell, going tong, saying jumping up and down in scotland viwell, going to maxaying jumping up and down in scotland viwell, going to max outig , well, were going to max out on out on oil. On all rights, max out on oil. So weve allowed you the last so if weve allowed you the last word very elegantly put. My panel coming thank you to my panel coming up, racist and sexist . So next time you hear a colleague or friend talk of how look forward to how they look forward to spending their family how they look forward to spen sure their family how they look forward to spen sure correct their family how they look forward to spen sure correct them. amily how they look forward to spen sure correct them. Itnily how they look forward to spen sure correct them. It isy , be sure to correct them. It is in unpaid child care. In fact, unpaid child care. Oxfam goes on to that oxfam goes on to claim that market relations are given precedence family and precedence over family and social relations. Individualism over solidarity and interdependence , rational choice interdependence, rational choice over well being. I mean, if that isnt the most awful bureaucratic garbage, i dont know is stalinist is, know what is stalinist is, i think, unfair. On stalin, who spoke in clearer soundbites. But spoke in clearer soundbites. But worst of all, the Charity Claims its work is ignored by official statistics. Six which isnt statistics. Six which isnt actually true. The government actually true. The government has said that traditional economic measures such as gdp has said that traditional economsome asures such as gdp has said that traditional economsome ofrres such as gdp has said that traditional econom some of the such as gdp has said that traditional econom some of the mostas gdp has said that traditional economsome of the most useful remain some of the most useful indicators of Economic Performance , but it recognises performance, but it recognises there limitations and said there are limitations and said it should not be seen as an all encompassing measure of welfare. Perhaps oxfam wanted perhaps if oxfam wanted help, the , it stop the economy, it should stop hiring write reports hiring people to write reports like them enter the like this and let them enter the real do some real job market and do some proper work and well, its interesting. I did actually read the report before coming on, and its actually called radical pathways beyond gdp. Why we have why there is a need to pursue femininity and decolonial alternatives and so i read this my sort of headline on this is i read this as oxfam jumping on the back of recent International Labour organisation statistics to do some political activism here. And they the report is actually factually way off, accurate. For example, it talks accurate. For example, it talks about ghana and the gambia as being addicted to western imports because of colonialisation. Well, not only were they decolonised many, many years ago, but also the people that they import from are china and india. Its not us, although oxfam say particularly its a eurocentric problem in terms of the what it says about unpaid child care. Well you know, there are a lot of people who would say actually , we shouldnt be say actually, we shouldnt be paying say actually, we shouldnt be paying people to look after their own children. We have child benefit in this country. Child benefit in this country. Thats fine. But this oxfam report is global. But should governments be paying for families, parents to look after their children, which is almost what this is saying. Wheres the link to production . Link to production . Does this money come where does this money come from . Thing you from . Thats the thing that you can very well come up can all very well come up with new figures on and so new figures and so on and so forth. But gdp tells you how well is, how well off a country is, how standards rising or standards living are rising or falling coming up with new falling and coming up with new figures doesnt mean anybody is any better off. Its all pretty vacuous, isnt it . But its interesting. In a world where were now calling ourselves post industrial and whether you like it or not, were having to scale up and face up to this idea of a post carbon environment that we still use very Old Fashioned metrics that value us on a capitalist deliverance of product. How much stuff you make and sell and a failure to value so much of the invisible work that even when it is paid in western economic structures, its horribly undervalued in relation to other work, dare i say it predominantly still done by, i think tesla, you know, at the moment, economies around the world, not just western economies, but in the far east china even, theyre looking at gdp as the measurement. Its imperfect. There are very few systems are perfect. But i think there is. Thats the economy that is about how vibrant the economy is. There is a different point about whether or not the way the economy and a nafion or not the way the economy and a nation or region is governed delivers well being for the population. And ive said for many years that actually one of the objectives of politics should be to deliver a feeling of confidence, optimism, prosperity and security amongst the population. And thats about the population. And thats about well being. Its about how you feel. But the vibrancy of the feel. But the vibrancy of the economy contributes to that, particularly the prosperity party. But its not only about the figures , its about how the figures, its about how people feel. And i think that thatis people feel. And i think that that is partly what oxfam get to, but they go way over the top. They make the whole thing ridiculous by coming in with ridiculous by by coming in with factual inaccuracies. And its a crusade on decolonial colonialisation youre both myopically focusing in on the colonial. Colonial. Actually, as a woman, i immediately jumped on the 65 of the work that women do across the work that women do across the globe, not just Jacob Rees Moggs wife. 65 of the work that they do is unpaid paid. That is staggering. And it paid. That is staggering. And it means if youre judging society by this Old Fashioned economic metric, those women are unseen. But surely that makes us vulnerable. But surely this misses the point that gdp isnt there to say whether people are valuable human beings there is human beings or whether there is a spiritual background to a good spiritual background to the which they live, the country in which they live, it is this country richer it says. Is this country richer than country how do you than that country and how do you have wealth spread than that country and how do you have the wealth spread than that country and how do you have the whole] spread than that country and how do you have the whole population . And across the whole population . And this oxfam trying to get it this oxfam is trying to get it to measure something that its not to measure. Not aiming to measure. And its rather indeed. And its rather targeted and it says it at European Society as well. I would suggest that its not necessarily european societies in which we have the biggest problem with across the globe in terms of unpaid work for women, women working without money. I think there are other societies elsewhere where probably the problem is a great deal greater. So why dont oxfam direct their attention there . But actually its all about ways in which you value work because the poorer you are as a society, less able you are. Society, the less able you are. Then to give money and to free up and to engage able women in britain , even now, one of the britain, even now, one of the cnses britain, even now, one of the crises were having, and its the reason why. Jeremy hunt weve got to draw. Draw stumps on weve got to draw stumps on that. No, im we have that. Oh, no, im afraid we have very discussion. After very exciting discussion. After the well be turning the break, well be turning to the break, well be turning to the question the very important question of whether president of whether the former president of the states, john donald the United States, john donald j. Trump, has indeed been trumped. Has the final trumpet sounded now weve been following Donald Trumps journey, havent we, from newark to washington, dc , from newark to washington, dc, where hes due to face his arraignment hearing, we saw him land on his private plane at washington airport. Well, we know that trumps motorcade has arrived outside the courthouse in washington. The courthouse in washington. And Donald Trumps legal spokesperson , alina haba, gave spokesperson, alina haba, gave this statement right outside the court a short time ago. Court a short time ago. Biden political lawfare for that. We have seen time and time again it is a deflect action from everything that they have done. And if you dont believe me, look at the facts. On march me, look at the facts. On march 17th. Hunter accidental admits that it was his laptop from hell. The next day, depher alvin bragg indicts president trump. Bragg indicts president trump. June 8th, an fbi document is released showing that the ukrainians paid the Biden Crime Family million weapons and millions of dollars. The next millions of dollars. The next day , the mar a lago raid and the day, the mar a lago raid and the mar a lago indictment. Last week mar a lago indictment. Last week , Hunter Bidens sweetheart plea deal fell through when the judge realised it had blanket immunity. The following day, a super speeding indictment against donald trump, super speeding indictment against donald trump , july 31st, against donald trump, july 31st, dev van archer goes to testify in front of the house. That was only after they failed to put him in jail prior to the fact that what happens the next day, the january sixth indictment that were here for today , this that were here for today, this is not a coincidence. This is election interference at its finest against the leading candidate right now for president for either party. President trump is under siege in a way that we have never seen before. President trump and his before. President trump and his legal team and everyone on his team will continue to fight, not for him, but for the american people. Ill take some questions. Thank you. Questions. Thank you. I know the president has called this a witch hunt. You just laid out several examples of that in your other thoughts from that, the president. Well, the journalists are asking some questions there. But i think youve got the hang of that. That is alina haba. Shes trumps spokesperson detailing there some pretty strong allegations joe bidens allegations about joe bidens team. In a nutshell, really team. In a nutshell, really saying what trump was saying a short time ago, earlier on today. This is nothing more than the latest chapter in a politically motivated witch hunt. Of course, motivated witch hunt. Of course, despite these criminal cases , is despite these criminal cases, is trump is still the favourite republican candidate in the 2024 election. The latest polls say showing him about 37 Percentage Points ahead of his nearest rival, ron desantis. But he is rival, ron desantis. But he is facing those charges in court today. Facing those charges in court today. Conspiracy to defraud the today. Conspiracy to defraud the us , conspiracy to obstruct an us, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy against the rights of citizens. Its all about trying to overturn the 2020 Election Results in the United States. Joe bidens election victory , joe bidens election victory, and he is going to be in court for that arraignment hearing. And arraignment hearing. Of course, a legal procedure whereby the defendant hears the charges against them and enters a plea. We, of course, already know that donald trump is likely to be saying hes not guilty to all charges. Liz, well bring all charges. Liz, well bring you the latest on what he does say is in court. When we say when he is in court. When we come back. Come back. Thank you, paulie. Im now thank you, paulie. Im now joined by susan platt , the joined by susan platt, the former chief of staff to joe biden when he was in the senate. But, susan, thank you very much for joining. But, susan, thank you very much forjoining me this much for joining me this afternoon on whats really happening. Is this political or is it legal or is it a bit of both, in your view . Both, in your view . Well, when i just watched this statement, i, i guess i was shocked, but i shouldnt be all that the donald trump has tried to do for these years is deflect and shift blame away from his, which well find out illegal activities. This is something activities. This is something thatis activities. This is something that is certainly historic to have a former president indicted not once, but three times, of course, is unheard of. But what this really is about is ensuring our democracy, the basic tenets of our constitution. This is going to be the most important trial, certainly in my lifetime. And i would believe probably in the history of the United States. And to try to compare this with someone who this with with someone who clearly had some troubles with with the with the tax code is just so bad. And so off and so irrelevant. You know, we are here in court. Hes being arraigned today because his republican officials and appointees testify in front of the grand jury against him. And thats something we all have to remember. All right. But having trouble with the tax code can be quite serious as al capone found but to what al capone found out. But to what extent political . Because extent is it political . Because the justice is the department of justice is under the control of the democrats. The judge was appointed former president appointed by former president obama. Isnt it understandable that many republicans have come to the conclusion that this is a politically motivated prosecution, ones who prosecution, even ones who arent great admirers of donald trump . Trump . I dont do not understand the cult like mentality of the maga crowd on january 6th, 2021, lindsey graham, of all people, said, im done, im out. Ive had enough. But their tune gets had enough. But their tune gets changed a little bit. They all watched it. They watched it happen right in front of our eyes and i understand that there are several Capitol Hill Police officers attending the arraignment today to voice their concern, to see that help the justice gets done. And what theyre trying to say is essentially that donald trump behind he conspired to trump is behind he conspired to organise this to make it organise this riot to make it happen, to overturn a legitimate election result. Thats the nub of the matter from a legal standpoint. Standpoint. Well, hes charged with conspiracy to violate civil rights , which is basically rights, which is basically trying to overturn an election, take away peoples right to vote or defraud the government, obstruct an official proceeding. That was the elected count in the senate and conspiracy to carry that out. This is big stuff. When your Vice President , when Donald Trumps Vice President testifies against him, you know , the guys in trouble you know, the guys in trouble and you know hes going to throw up anything and anything to deflect what done deflect away from what hes done. Donald trump has skirted the law his entire career. We all know it now. Well see what happens. Do you think this is good for the United States . I ask this, thinking back to what happened to instead of a to nixon, that instead of a long, drawn out impeachment, he resigned and was then pardoned. Do you think that it damages americas reputation around the world to have these legal political cases being fought out in this way with arraignments and grand juries . And so on . Well, i dont think we have any choice. Certainly, donald trump is not going to do what Richard Nixon did. He really could care less. Its all about donald trump. So were forced to do this. So i think ultimately, democracy thrives in the sunlight , democracy thrives in the sunlight, and thats what were about to see. Okay. And therefore , the okay. And therefore, the democrats position in all of this, with control of the department of justice, how strong is that political control 7 strong is that political control . Could the democrats stop this if they wanted to . If they wanted to . Its the law is the law. And we have to remember that donald trump was indicted by a group of 12 of his peers, not not anyone from the Justice Department. From the Justice Department. They were ordinary citizens who heard the facts and decided to indict. This was not the Justice Department that indicted these were ordinary citizens. And there will be ordinary citizens who will stand in in in listening to the trial as a trial procedure, which i hope is quickly and i hope is televised, because Everyone Needs it. Thank you for that. With me now is greg swensen, chairman of republicans overseas. Greg, thank you so much for coming in. Good here. Im really good to be here. Im really interested political interested in this political aspect because in the uk, aspect of it because in the uk, whatever we may have in whatever failings we may have in ourjudiciary, its not our judiciary, its not politically appointed and the ministry of justice cannot control prosecutions. But thats control prosecutions. But thats not quite the case in the us, is it . The judge was appointed by obama and the department of justice is under the control of a biden appointee. Yeah, its difficult and i think judge judges typically are appointed have lifetime tenure. Many are appointed by democrats. Many are appointed by democrats. Many republicans. Many are appointed by democrats. Many republicans. And the many republicans. And the problem is the department of justice, the attorney general is appointed by the president. But what they try to do and i think trump did this very well with bill barr , is appoint people who bill barr, is appoint people who have impeccable reputations. And that will agree to exercise their departure judgement or their departure judgement or their responsibilities without bias, without political bias. And i think bill barr did that very well. In fact, he quite deliberately did not bring any new cases against the opposition , even during an election year, which is which is tradition. Which is which is tradition. Biden and his appointee have have really been reckless in terms of trying to you know, to maintain fair fairness and equal and equal application of the law. It really it really hasnt been good. And merrick garland, i think he should be impeached before they impeach joe biden. Before they impeach joe biden. And this is having an effect on republicans who in on republicans who are in vast numbers now supporting donald trump , even if they didnt like trump, even if they didnt like him before hand that it has rallied the Republican Party like nothing else. Theres great sympathy. See, theres great sympathy. See, and i think, you know, trumps spokesperson who was who was on a little earlier talking about the odd timing of all this, you know, trump was only up nine points over desantis before the mar a lago raid last year. Last summer , and the next week he was summer, and the next week he was up 39. And then youve had , you up 39. And then youve had, you know, back to within 10 know, he got back to within 10 or 12 a few months ago. And then or 12 a few months ago. And then you you know, you had constant you know, executions of these either searches or indictments. And searches or indictments. And thats bumped up his numbers. So i think and i frankly, i think the democrats and the and the media in the us want trump to be the nominee. The nominee. So what effect is it having on that group in the middle who dont identify as democrats or republicans . Independence . Dont identify as democrats or republi feel independence . Dont identify as democrats or republi feel trumpsependence . Dont identify as democrats or republi feel trumps beingance . Dont identify as democrats or republi feel trumps being set . Do they feel trumps being set up or do they feel hes basically a rogue . Basically a rogue . Really the former they its really the former they think hes being set up. And i think hes being set up. And i think you can believe in two truths. Might truths. You might not you might not donald trump. And not like donald trump. And many of conservatives were very of us conservatives were very critical of him and his behaviour. Critical of him and his behaviour. We thought it was irresponsible after irresponsible what he did after the surely think it the election. We surely think it was irresponsible what he did on january but it wasnt january 6th, but it wasnt criminal. And to use the courts to prosecute your political opponent is not very american. Its surely not very english ehhen so theres quite a high risk that what the democrats are doing could be counterproductive and is actually making more and is actually making it more likely win the likely that trump will win the president ial a president ial election in a years time. Could backfire on them. I it could backfire on them. I mean, its a game theyre mean, its a chess game theyre playing. Its a dangerous one because elevating him in because theyre elevating him in the process. They the nomination process. They dont face ron desantis. Dont want to face ron desantis. Many conservatives really love ron desantis, but every time theres an indictment, trumps numbers go up. Its hard to fight that. It also takes attention away from the other candidates. Well, also takes attention away from hunter biden and all thats going on with the president s son. For another day. But thats for another day. Thank greg. Thats from but thats for another day. Tharup greg. Thats from but thats for another day. Tharup next,eg. Thats from but thats for another day. Tharup next, its thats from but thats for another day. Tharup next, its the ts from but thats for another day. Tharup next, its the great from me. Up next, its the great professor daniel whats professor daniel wootton. Whats up . Up in your show .
