Gambling, medical cannabis, transgender care: Alabama House faces momentous votes
The conclusion of an Alabama legislative session is often dramatic. But the final three days of the 2021 session could be especially momentous.
The Alabama House of Representatives could take up legislation authorizing medical marijuana; banning puberty blockers and hormones for transgender youth, and setting up a 2022 vote on allowing a lottery and expanded gambling in the state.
All three measures could have profound impacts on Alabamians, and the bill targeting transgender youth could land the state in federal court.
The Legislature plans to meet on Tuesday and Thursday and has scheduled its final day for May 17. House Speaker Mac McCutcheon, R-Monrovia, said Thursday he expected the gaming and cannabis bills to come to a vote.
