Indian gas firm GAIL has successfully completed the world's first ship-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) transfer to reduce shipping costs and emissions. GAIL has a contract to import 5.8 million tonnes per year of LNG from the US, typically transported by ship over a journey of 19,554 nautical miles. However, GAIL's innovative arrangement involved transferring the cargo mid-journey to another vessel, resulting in a reduction of 7,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and savings of over USD 1m.
