Neil it is happening again. Fox on top of a mounting crises at home and abroad. Israel weighing its next move as the net from iran is escalating by the Way Threat signs blaring again in haifa if overnight, e continued exchanges between soldiers as the country is preparing to mark one year since those October 7th attacks by hamas. What israeli ambassador to the united nations, danny danon, is saying as fears of an allout war are growing. And what role is the u. S. Playing in former Defense Secretary William can cohen and democratic Pennsylvania GovernorJosh Shapiro here to weigh in. Then, the Death Toll from helene still rising. Search ask andless cue efforts now intensifying. Where the road to Recovery Stands in Hardthit NorthCarolina Hardhit North Carolina as Kamala Harris heads to the state a day after Donald Trumps visit. We are on top of it, all of it. Welcome, everybody, im neil can cavuto. First, to haifa, israel, with where we heard sirens going off again. I want to bring in trey yingst, hes got a great book on this, Black Saturday, i just finished it. Do want the talk about that, but first, trey, whats going on right now . Reporter yeah, neil. We are seeing more attacks by the iranbacked Group Hezbollah into Northern Israel. Earlier today there were more rockets soaring through the skies of this city. Some of them intercepted, others slamming into the sea off the my right. This is a Reoccurring Theme as the conflict continues. Its not just here in haifa, israels third largest city, but all across Northern Israel as israeli strikes are hammering positions in Southern Lebanon and also in the lebanese capital of beirut. The group is still firing back. They have an arsenal of thousands of rockets and missiles, and they are using them as we speak. Neil in. Neil trey, when this all started, you think about it with the Hamas Surprise Attack almost a year ago, did you have any idea what you were covering them, that wed be here now with a Widening Conflict that some point to being the next World War iii . Reporter we didnt know at that moment that this would expand to a broader regional war, but we did know hezbollah would get directly involved. Just about 24 hours after the massacre took place in Southern Israel, the iranbacked Group Firing Drones and rockets into Northern Israel. And i write about this in Black Saturday, the israeli cabinet actually was considering preemptive strikes against hezbollah. And with jets in the sky the wednesday after the October 7th massacre they called off the strikes. Israels prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with President Biden and ultimately a decision was made not to strike hezbollah positions in lebanon. Now, this has led to a War Of Attrition over the past year with an exchange of blows that only in recent are weeks has shifted to the a different level with Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, being taken out along with a number of top commanders from hezbollahs radwan forces. Neil you know, in reading the book and what you saw, and we were on the air together that day, you went into far more dangerous environment than i certainly was covering it there from New York here, but one of the things that Amaze Z Me amazes me and why hamas would to this and what it would unleer, and you recount a Story Of A Hamas Captive who was explaining the cruelty of what they did. You were very careful about relaying that on the air with all of your reports, but you said that in this man had acknowledged that in islams it is forbidden do forbidden to kill the women, children and the elderly, but commanders told them they could do whatever they wanted to do and they shouldnt plan on coming back. They were told to step on the heads of victims and behead them. We burned, slaughtered and beheaded people. We became animals, things that humans do not do. That that gave you an inkling of in this guys marching orders. Its bizarre. If. Reporter absolutely. And those words came from a member of hamas by brigades, the military wing of hamas, and he acknowledges that that those views and actions dont actually represent islam. But they were committed against a civilian population anyway. And when i posed these questions to the Hamas Leadership in the course of my reporting for our live shots on fox and and also for Black Saturday, hamas if officials lied about what happened. They wouldnt Act Knowledge the fact that civilians were slaughtered on October 7th despite the fact that We Saw the bodies in the communities along the border with gaza. The the horrific aftermath of this slaughter that took place. And that was part of the reason that this book needed to be written, to have a firsthand account of what took place on that morning and a true first draft of history so that years from now people dont forget what happened on October 7th, and they also dont forget about what happened Inside Gaza during the israeli response. Neil you know, but for you, youre still a young man, you are our chief foreign or correspondent, but the fact of the matter is youve been in War Zones all your adult life, afghanistan, iraq, ukraine and certainly here. But even here, and i know for your numerous Tv Appearances with me and so many others, you have a mission to relay stuff but not get overwhelmed by stuff. You write i guess after an appearance with howard kurtz, i often feel like i have a character to play on tv. Its really hard to see what we see. What the did you mean by that . Reporter this is incredibly challenging, this line of work, to go to the places that other people wont go and tell the stories that other people wont tell. But i do feel a massive responsibility not only to go and report on the front9 lines, but the get it right, to humanize this conflict, to tell the stories of israelis and palestinians, to tell the world what happened on the morning of October 7 Evident and during the war in gaza. October 7th. It does take a personal toll, seeing the aftermath. People died in front of us on the morning of October 7th. We went into gaza on Military Embeds and spoke with palestinian civilians who were experiencing the worst days of their lives. If through the all of that, you have to consume that information, process it, Combater Ifmentallize it and then focus on the mission of bringing these live reports to our audience. That can be challenging sometimes, but i think that we work with the most professional team in the business from our Security Team to our cameramen, our producers, our editors, and everyone in between. It allows us to bring these stories in a way that makes people care. And so im able to put all of that aside personally and focus professionally on what we are here to do. If. Neil well, you know, trey, i always joke with you that i feel like your dad when i worry about your safety and your crews safety, and then one of the features i love in your book is your dad, your actual dad your mom died two years ago, im sorry to the hear and he would always check in on you and say youve got to get rest, save your voice, some of the same kooky things that i say. And he still does that, doesnt he . Reporter absolutely. My fathers kind of like the father of an athlete who watches back tape. [laughter] he watches every single report that we do, and he looks for the things that maybe im missing in the process of this reporting. Says why dont you provide some extra context in the tag there to give the audience who hamas and who hezbollah really is, where do they get the support and funding, answer some of the questions that maybe arent Convention Aal and humanize this story. And i think thats the thing that i learned most there my parents and the thing that i write about extensively in Black Saturday, that its important to have empathy for israelis and palestinians. We take no sides in this profiting reporting. Im protruth, and i learned that from my parents. Neil yeah. Thats one of the things i love about you. One of the things that really struck me when i you talked about what you saw with this or or horrific event that changed human history, i think about that day a lot because we were so close to dying. We saw people who were killed, people who didnt have the Luck Cha that we had because it really was about that, its luck. Its the Ran Randomness of life, isnt it . Reporter absolutely. Its the randomness of timing. It really makes you reflect on everything that you do. We were in Southern Israel on the morning of October 7th just one intersection away from a hamas ambush. If there was No One that told us not to go. There was No One that told us we cant continue reporting with freedom of movement. It was a decision that i made and that the team made and, ultimately, a decision that saved our lives. And so many people that i chronicle in Black Saturday from israelis to the palestinians, one decision changed the entire course of their lives. And it makes you really think about our existence here and the stories that we cover, and i think its yet another reminder that things can change very quickly, especially in a battle environment, in the wars that we cover not just here in The Middle East, but around the world. Timing truly is everything, and often it can be the difference between life and death. Neil that is a remarkable story, it is a remarkable book. Trey yingst, i will be your father again knowing your father says the same thing. Be careful, my friend, be safe. Trey yingst. Reporter thank you, neil. Neil i urge you to to read this book. He writes as bluntly as he reports. We need a lot more of that. Danny danon with us right now. He also speaks very bluntly of the threat that faces not only israel, he says, but the world. The israeli ambassador to the united nations, kind to join us. Ambassador, very good to see you. You know that the incidents of nearly a year ago better than anyone, so i dont have to remind you of them, but the sheer graphic nature of them is lost on a lot of people for whom this has been whitewashed. And i, you know, we know war is horrific, but what triggered all of this was especially horrific. How do you feel almost a year later . Neil, good morning. So this coming monday we will all remember the atrocities, the victims and also the hostages still in the hands of hamas. But youre absolutely right, you know, i stand at the u. N. With all the leaders about why we are fighting in gaza, in lebanon. What sported that . Started that . This connection between what ignited the situation where we are, and we have to remind them, we have to remind them of October 7th, we have to remind them the barbaric behavior of our enemies. And it wasnt just another war, another conflict. You know, in israel, unfortunately, we have many wars. But what we experienced on october. 7th was a different paradigm. It was brutality that one can never if imagine, more brutal than isis. And thats why i think today israelis are standing together. Despite the pain, we are committed to go all the way to uproot evil, both hamas and gaza, hezbollah in the knot. And it will lead to also the regime in iran. Neil i know these attacks are continuing in Southern Israel, ambassador, as we speak. I am curious about what israels Purpose Response will be to these iran Missile Attacks. Youve gotten all sorts of advice and warnings from All Over The World including President Biden who says its not a good idea to go after nuclear facilities and then Donald Trump says its a very good idea to go after those nuclear facilities. How do you feel about that . First, you know, it was unprecedented attack against israel, almost 200 ballistic missiles. Think it was the largest attack in history that we are experience. And we will retaliate. On the 14th there was another attack. This time it was different. It was targeting population, civilians, and they will feel the price. It will be soon, it will be painful. Regarding the nuclear capabilities of iran, one how old can ask himself until when should we wait . If i say we, not only israel, western civilization. Today we know that they are very close to put together the capabilities of nuclear capabilities. The next stage so the put it on a ballistic bomb, and the third stage is to launch it either on israel or another muslim country, who knows . I dont think we should wait for that to happen. I think the respondent of the u. S. , israel to make sure it will not happen. Neil we have reports, ambassador, that iran has been moving, hiding a lot of its Oil Tankers. I dont know where you hide an oil tanker, frankly, but they are certainly repositioning them. Do you know where those Oil Tankers are . Excuse me. They are completely vulnerable. We know exactly what they are doing. We are watching them. They cannot hide. Weve got the leadership in beirut, weve got the leadership in gaza, and they should watch very carefully what they are doing, and they should think twice before acting as a well. Neil all right. Danny danon, thank you for joining us, the israeli ambassador to the united nations. Its been a busy week for him, to to put pit mildly. Also keeping you up on Rescue Efforts here in North Carolina as weve been reminding you, the Death List has gone up to 2322 the right now. About a third of those in North Carolina alone 232. Half A Million still without power in a 5state region. Well keep you posted and updated right after this. But st. Jude has gotten us through it. St. Jude is hope for every child diagnosed with cancer because the research is being shared All Over The World. [background sounds] neil all right, who would have guessed, right . A week ago when you had helene first hit florida, who would have thought that the real damage would be points much further north, all the way up to North Carolina . Many residents there still without power and a lot of them giving up hope because its hard for rescue to make it to them. Lucas tomlinson is in asheville, North Carolina, among the hard hardhit towns of all. Hows it looking there, lucas . Reporter thats right, neil. We saw the devastation firsthand this morning. In fact, there are Power Trucks on the road from as far as away as indiana and ontario, canada. Vice president harris is scheduled to arrive here in the asheville area sometime this afternoon. Now, yesterday outside augusta, georgia, i had a chance to ask former president Donald Trump what he thinks about the white Houses Relief efforts. Its been a terrible response if from the if White House. Theyre missing A Billion Dollars that was used for another purpose, and nobodys seen Anything Hike that. No, from that standpoint its been terrible. Reporter now here in North Carolina, neil, paratroopers in Chinook Heavylift helicopters if from fort liberty, formerly known as Fort Bragg, have been ramping up missions to deliver badlyneeded aid. Trump said he wants to change the name back to Fort Bragg with, the 8 2nd is under the 18th Airborne Corps under the command of lieutenant general chris donahue, The Last Man to the Leave Afghanistan during the withdrawal. Critics say the 82nd Airborne should have been ordered here to assist people much earlier, and North Carolina air national guard assets have completed, they say, 146 missions resulting in the rescue of over 530 people and 150 pets. Yesterday North CarolinaGovernor Roy Cooper and Bidens Fema Director provided an update about the latest relief efforts. This unprecedented, catastrophic storm requires an unprecedented response. And were in the middle of that right now. One, theres a lot of misinformation about the fact that we are not going to have enough money because its being redistricted elsewhere redirected elsewhere, just plain false. We have everything you need, governor, everybody here in North Carolina, and we are going to the continue to provide the assistance as long as you need it. Reporter so, neil, you can see some of the devastation behind me. Flood waters just ravaged asheville here in this art district, all the businesses have been crushed. People are waiting for more aid a, and thats one of the reasons Vice President harris will be arriving here later today, to see it firsthand and receive briefings, neil. Neil thank you, my friend. I want to go to an asheville the or asheville, North Carolina, mayor. Mayor, thank you so much for joining us. It does look like a War Zone there. How are you holding up, whats the latest . Well, were a strong community, and were Hang Aing in there hanging in there, but this is going to be a long road to recovery, that is for sure. Neil you know, so many of the roads, and i was looking at some of these aerials, of course, a Twolane Highway for the most part, and often times there are large swaths of that, mayor, as you know far better than i that are inaccessible. And im just wondering, that alone makes it difficult to to get help. Hence, all the helicopter help. Whats the latest on that . So we do have a lot of helicopters in the air around here because there are places that are isolated with Road And Bridge washouts, where theres still only accessible by helicopter needed to bring resources in, and we do have fema here on the ground and a state effort. Theyre able to airlift those resources in to those communities. And here in the center of the city were able to stand up several sites throughout the city for people to receive those really just lifesustaining support that we need right now, food, water, those kinds of resources so that our folks that are here are able to continue to live in their homes if they have a home thats habitable. Neil yeah, thats a very good point, mayor, if they have a home. A lot of them, the ones who are finally able to reach and get help, you know, rescuers come or a lot of these soldiers and helicopters who Aa Rye dont find arrive dont find a home at all. Thats what that what makes this so unreal. As the governor said, it is an unprecedented, catastrophic event. Ive been the mayor here for over ten years, this is my city. Ive never seen it like this. And it is going to take a long time to dig out so that we are able to rebuild and continue to be the amazing city that we are with. This is a place where we have over 11 Million tourists a year normally. We would normally be entering into our beautiful Reefchanging Season leafchanging season, but right now were just devastated and doing everything we can to move through this crisis and prepare for that, that Rebuilding Effort to make us whole once again. Neil thank you, mayor, very much. Be strong. You have been and your people have been. The mayor of asheville, North Carolina. Its a beautiful neck of the woods. Right now a badly damaged neck of the woods. All right, meanwhile, we are following that Port Worker Strike that is now resolved after three days. It got a little scary, but its not entirely over with. The implications after this. Neil all right, that port if Strike Kind of settled, can and there were a good many ports closed along the East Coast and the gulf coast. Remember, the West Coast resolved their issues a year ago, and the sinker might have been the fact that the West Coast workers there were not going to allow ships that would be diverted to the West Coast and unload them there. They were working in unity with their East Coast brethren, and that is probably what got this settled, but its not entirely settled. Despite big wage hikes, they didnt resolve the issues of Pot Modernizations and all that port modernizations, not too keen on that. That could hopefully be settled right before the next president is inaugurateed in january. Inaugurate ad. Former walmart ceo. Always good to have you, bill. When you were head of that company, you know, a Worker Outage could be pending to make sure you had all the supply you needed, in this case, you know, for halloween and for christmas and all of that. So walmart if took a cue from that, did the same thing again and was ready for this. Its customers were not going to be overly impacted, but what do you think about how it worked out so far . Yeah, its good to be back with you, neil. You know, it was scary last week watching, i mean, that was serious. We avoided a catastrophe. You know, 15 of the products we use in this country are brought in through those ports of entry, and, you know, and our food products, produce, it approaches 4050 in some categories. We just couldnt take that kind of disruption right now, and i think the longshoremen knew it and took advantage of it. As far as walmart if goes, you know, any company that has, you know, such a large piece of their business thats coming across the Ocean Saw that, the Contract Deadline and the lack of activity that was happening and was prepared. So i think the ability to withstand few days or a week of a strike without anything bad happening, they were able to build that sort of insulation. But any longer than that, i think it would have been really impactful. Neil bill, have you been surprised by the resiliency of the consumer . I know there are patches where, you know, their Credit Lines are tapped and all of that and theres only so much more buying they can do, but it has not impacted, obviously, walmart sales, target sales, some of the others doing surprisingly well. And then, lo and behold, we get this very strong Employment Report out yesterday that shows 254,000 more jobs. That was about double what was estimated. And it appeared to be i across the board. What do you make of the recovery . Obviously, Wall Street loved it, the Dow Racing to yet another record. What do you think . I remain concerned about upward pressure if on prices, neil. I mean, just in the last 24 hours, right, We Saw, as you mentioned, a really terrific jobs report. So we have were at full employment, 4 is considered full employment. Neil right. And now we start fearing again about Wage Increases, you know . The longshoremen are going to get 6 62 over 6 years. I mean, thats a pretty hefty Wage Increase if thats the standard Wage Increase thats going to be built into our Product Pipeline for the next six years as other Labor Unions renegotiate their contract. Were going to continue to see price pressure. So full employment and rising wages delivers a really robust and resilient consumer. But it puts pressure on prices. And i remain concerned about inflationary pressures. Neil we have seen in the past, you know, when there are contract settlements like this and, again, not all the is are dotted and t crossed, but other unions will see that and say, hey, what about me in maybe you encountered that in your days in Walmart Ifing i dont know. But a lot of those tend to have to be passed along the in highs, higher prices for shoppers. Is that your big concern now . Oh, count on it. I mean, you know, particularly in food, Grocery Margins are very, very thin neil right. You know, mid single digits if youre lucky, if youre a good operator. So if the Wage Component goes up 6, 7, 8 a year, theres just no way the absorb that and still stay in business. So the prices, you know, prices will be going up. Its just, its just the laws of economics. Neil yeah. We shall see. Its got Wall Street rethinking whether the federal reserve aggressively cuts rates as much as thought. They seem to treat good news as good news. Well see how that goes. Bill simon, former walmart ceo. Meantime, the big Worry Knockout now or big wait is what israel does in response to those iranian Missile Attacks last week. Growing fears that this could escalate into a World War. There are certain things that are vulnerable and certain things that are not vulnerable. Were between to go to william cohen, the former u. S. Defense secretary, what he thinks is atta stake after this. [background sounds] we put our arm around the veterans. I think many of these challenges are as a result of Donald Trumps policies and things he set in motion. Vice president harris has made clear she stands with israel, also expressed some concerns that she has and the administration has with some of the Can Conduct of the government that is in charge now. And i think it is important to distinguish between the two. Neil Pennsylvania Governor shapiro who says its a very delicate kind of a moment here in military history, certainly in mideast history, how israel responds to these latest iranian Missile Attacks. Theres a raging debate as to how far they can push it, how far the White House wants them to push it. President biden making it clear he isnt too keen on the idea of going after nuclear facilities and a growing debate on the wisdom of going after iranian oil facilities. Nate foy following all of this in, i would imagine, an anxious tel aviv. Nate. Reporter hey a, neil. Is as that question lingers over this entire region with the possibility of a broader war on the horizon, israel is expanding its airstrikes into northern Lebanon Today into the city of tripoli. Two separate airstrikes took out two different hamas senior commanders as Hezbollah And Israel continue exchanging fire on israels northern front. Take a look at this video, Hezbollah Firing over 200 rockets every single day. The Sirens Blaring in the north at this hour. But as you mentioned, israel still hasnt responded to irans massive ballistic Missile Attack on tuesday, and president Joe Biden is cautioning israel against striking nuclear facilities and Oil Fields of iran. The israelis have not concluded how theyre what theyre going to do in terms of a strike. Thats under discussion. I think if i were in those shoes, id be thinking about other alternatives than striking Oil Fields. Reporter neil, irans supreme leader spoke before thousands yesterday. He called on all muslim nations to unite against israel, and he said iran would attack israel again if necessary. Meanwhile, israel continues targeting hezbollah positions in beirut. There are reports that israel killed the presumed successor to the Hassan Nasrallah in a thursday airstrike, but neither the Idf Nor Hezbollah have confirmed that. Israeli troops continue their Ground Offensive complemented by airstrikes, israel Hit A hezbollah Command Center located inside a mosque this morning according to the idf. Israels also giving Evacuation Orders in central gaza, an Overnight AirstrikeHit AHamas Command certain located inside a school. An interesting report from the New York times, neil, u. S. Officials according to this report believe that that a Hamas Leader is still alive and making critical decisions for hamas, and those u. S. Officials according to that report believe that sinwar with hoping for that broader regional a war that the united states is trying to avoid. Back to you. Neil thank you, nate. William cohen with us now, secretary, always nice of you to stop by. Thank you. Thank you, neil. Neil youve heard the debate over the wisdom of attacking iranian, you know, nuclear facilities, and its the extended now, i hear youre more attuned to this than i would be to oil facilities. A great risk in the price of oil skyrocketing, all of a sudden the whole world is paying for that. Where are you on this . Well, i think the israelis have other options, as President Biden has a said. They could use cyber technology to strike at that lot of the infrastructure a lot of the infrastructure in iran without going after their Oil Fields. Going after their nuclear sites, i know this is a prime objective at some point in time for the race israelis, but thats not something, in my opinion, they can carry out on their own. The sites are spread out across the country in iran. They are buried in mountainsides, very difficult to get missiles that that will penetrate or bombs that will penetrate deep enough to get at them. So i think they would only be able to do it successfully9 if the united states were involved. The united states, according to President Biden, we want no mart of part of that neil right. Because the present administration is worried about this spreading to the point you have a destabilization of the entire region impacting the global economy. Thats not something the united states wants to promote. Neil on that point though, secretary, and you know the history far better than i, israel did pull off such a strike on a nuclear facility in the case of iraq i believe in 1980. I dont think whether they did that all alone are, but they do have a history of doing this, and this is a moment where they could seize on that and seem to be justified doing that. What do you think . Well, that was 1980. Neil right. I think the iranians have learned lessons as well in terms of how they place, how deep theyve gone, what angle of attack would be necessary. And the fact is that the israelis want one of the finest Air Forces in the world, have a long distance to go. They have air to air refueling, to be sure, but they would have to have multiple attacks upon multiple sites. Im just in the convinced at this point they have that capability. It may be that they will try and send a signal to prepare to do that, but i think as far as success would be a concern, i dont put that in the high achievable category. Neil secretary, in the meantime, were learning that the friction continues to exist if between the white House And Marley benjamin netanyahu, President Biden more or less said that yesterday. Im just wondering, whatever plans israel has in response the iran, you get the idea that they wont be bouncing them off of us. If i could be wrong, but what do you make of that . Well, i have a problem with that. To the extent that the israelis consider the united states their best ally and at times perhaps their only ally going forward, i think they have to take care that they keep this relationship in repair. And that means confiding with the united states, confiding with our military, with our Joint Chiefs Of Staff so that we dont get caught by surprise because we have members of our military in the region by the thousands, and they are subject to attack. So wed like to know in advance if we have to take extra precautionary measure, where the attacks going to be launched what is the likelihood of response from iran or elsewhere. We have an obligation to protect our force forces as well. To the extent that were allies, we need to share that. I think because the prime minister, netanyahu, does not have any confidence with President Biden, hes not eager to share the information for fear we might disclose it in advance and undermine or sabotage the event. I think that is wrong thinking on his part, but there is such a strain in the relationship that i think it complicates it. And thats why this public rift really is, works to the disadvantage of the united states but also to to israel. Israel is enjoying popularity right now. Until things go wrong. And once things go wrong, then youre going to have the finger being pointed at the israelis saying you should have listened the what the biden administration was saying and urging caution. Now that you havent taken that advice, we have a wider war and guess whos going to be held responsible . Theyll go from being victim to villain, and Thats Something they should take into account. Neil secretary, thank you very much. Good seeing you again. Pleasure. Neil william cohen. By the way, to the secretarys point, the biden administration might have one view on attacking those nuclear facilities should israel go that route, Donald Trump has made it clear he does the not, that they should be attacking. Well have more after this. Neil you know, theres so much going on, but a lot of people dont know in this volatile month of october, a scary one for the Markets Anything but so far, by the way a lot of good things are going on. I think sometimes when we bring thing like Breast Cancer Awareness to the fore here and help a lot of Folks Deal with that, Gerri Willis who knows firsthand, takes a look at whats at stake. Reporter new research is showing that the financial burden of being treated for cancer is not only creating economic hardship, but resulting in worse outcomes for those in treatment. Listen.
