John i remember the heady days of 1999 when the national debt was 5. 7 trillion in the White House was actually Coming Up with a plan to retire the debt. But we dont have to worry about that anymore. Some democrats, robert, are saying that the fed waited too long. Senators moran, hicken looper, and the White House are appealing to jerome powell to ss points. Here is what they said in a letter in part, given the feds confidence in inflation moving to a target of 2 and data indicating lower job growth, now is the time to move forward with Rate Cuts. In fact it may be too late coming your delays have threatened the economy and left the fed behind the curve. You seem to agree that the fed is behind the curve here. Did powell miss it . As i said, i think they are a little behind the eight ball because i thought their Target Rate should have changed in this postcovid environment, but normally come as steve says, i would never be higher than 25 Basis Points and i would have started an earlier process. John Donald Trump actually encourage the fed to wait until after the November 5th election, thinking that a Rate Cut now would be like the fed putting its thumb on the election scales. What do you think . You know, i think there is something to that. I just said i think could use a quarter Percentage Point Rate Cut, but why now . For the days from an election . It does look to me like the feds may be putting their thumb on the scale. And i dont like the optics of that appeared but i want to make another point appeared you know the rates that need to be cut, and i know robert is going to score when i say this but the rates that need to be cut of the Tax Rates, not the fed Interest Rates. We have a president ial candidate who wants to raise the Tax Rates through the roof. I think thats really negative for the economy. I think again, weve got to deal with this fiscal avalanche of debt and spending. Trump has at least a plan with Elon Musk to go through the budget and find all the waste and inefficiency, but i have not heard i havent heard 1 penny of Spending Reductions that Kamala Harris wants to put in place despite t the 2 Trillion deficit. John robert come i think i lost count of the number of president Ial Contenders who said they wanted to cut waste, fraudd abuse. None of them managed to do it so im not sure how much i would bank on Elon Musk going through though if anyone was going to be able to go through the economy or the government with a finetooth comb, waste, fraud, and abuse, it might be him. What do you think the overall effect on the Rate Cut will be Question Politico wrote, the economy has remade fairly resilient under higher rates, raising questions of how quickly it will respond as rates decline. John the dow seems to like it minimally, just up 24 points at this point. Maybe in the future, or if the Rate Cut is 50. Or maybe if they went to 75, which No One really think they will, go even higher. Final point to you, steve. Looked come every time we cut Tax Rates, Calvin Coolidge or john f. He said the Tax Cuts did not pay for themselves. It turns out in 2024 we got 500 Billion more revenue than we would have had without the tax cut.
