Bret okay. Thank you. Good evening. Im bret baier. Breaking tonight, Hunter Biden pleads guilty to charges of avoiding tax payments, Jury Selection was scheduled to begin instead. Lawyers for the president s son requested to change hiS Plea, surprising prosecutors who urged the judge to reject the new course of action. The case follows his conviction in delaware on Gun Charges for which he is still awaiting sentencing. We head to the courthouse in downtown Los Angeles Jonathan Hunt reports on how this case developed through the day, changed. Good evening, jonathan. Good evening, bret. Just about 30 minutes ago. We wrapped up what has been an extraordinary day with Hunter Biden walking out of the courthouse here. Having pled guilty to all nine Tax Evasion and Tax Fraud related charges. As he walked out, he said nothing. He held hands with his wife, melissa, and he left it to his Lead Attorney Abbe lowell to splain why he changed hiS Plea to guilty. Listen here. Hunter decided to enter hiS Plea to protect those he loves from unnecessary hurt and cruel humiliation. ThiS Plea prevents that kind of Show Trial that would have not provided all the facts or served any real point in justice. It was local who earlier in the day dropped a bombshell in court that the plea was going to be changed. At that point it was a socalled Alford Plea in which biden would plead guilty while not while maintaining his innocence to some of the charges against him. The Department Of Justice objected to that. The judge then heard from both sides, and indicated he would be open to what is called an open plea agreement. In other words, an admission on all charges, an admission of guilt. So then the prosecution was allowed to read out the entire 56 Page Indictment including all the lurid details about strippers, fast cars, fast women, aS Prosecutors have put it. And then Judge Mark Scarsy put each of the nine charges individually to Hunter Biden asking him how he pled. He said guilty nine times and that wrapped up the court proceedings. He will now be sentenced, bret, on december 13th, December 16th on November 1389 be sentenced on Gun Charge in delaware. We will all wait to see if President Biden on his way out of the White House either pardons his son or commutes those sentences. Up until now. President biden himself and today his white House Press Secretary Karine Jeanpierre said no that will not happen. Well find out for sure around noon on january 20th. Bret . Lawyers representing both special Counsel Jack Smith and the former president appeared in court today. The case was supposed to go to trial in march and put on hold before the u. S. Supreme court ruled the president s actions, president ial official acts are immune. The judge has yet to set a new trial date. But it wont happen before the election day. To come in after the doj has spent months and spent millions of dollars getting this case to today, and without even notifying them in advance apparently saying oh, by the way, we want to work out a deal now. When were in the courtroom and we are about to start Jury Selections you heard what his attorney said he did this for his family that may be in part because just days ago judge scarsy in this case said all of this information they want to bring in the government and the prosecutors want to bring in about Sex Workers and porn and prostitutes and be memberships at sex clubs, he said this Court Order last week the government generally grease with the government the evidence of the precise nature of mr. Bidens expenditures is necessary of the assessment of mr. Bidens state of mind. If he was going to allegedly claim these are business expenses, the judge said all of that stuff was likely to show up in the courtroom. I have never ever heard of any Defense Team walking in and without first telling the prosecutors, and i think thats one of the reasons there was a very fast opposition to the Alford Plea from the prosecutors. And the other thing, shannon is, we heard Jonathan Hunt in his report talk about whether there would be a pardon or what the White House is saying here. Maybe that was the ulterior motive here with thiS Ploy. This effort that they made in court today. Heres what Karine Jeanpierre has said about that. It is still very much unknown to the guess i have gotten if the president is going to pardon. I dont have anything else to add. Can you comment whether a commutation is also on or off the table. Bret thats also no. Obviously that doesnt mean its not going to happen. They have maintained that position and even just yesterday, when she waS Pressed on this issue about hunter going to trial, Karine Jeanpierre said listen, is he a private citizen. The president is staying out of this and letting it go. So maybe the position is no to pardon, no to commute as long as these legal cases were still pending. But just about every parent across America Out There also, if the president decided, listen, is he done with hiS Public life. Is he leaving office. He decides to pardon or commute any sentence for his son on the way out the door. I think a lot of americans are going to say we get it. Bret finally, very quickly. Former president is not going to trial on this 2020 case before the election. Yeah. And listen, they had said to Judge Chutkan who has been on hold for almost a year while the Supreme Court ironed out that Immunity Issue you talked about. They said to her we have all kinds of motions. We are going to try to get Jack Smith kicked off the case like what happened Judge Cannon in florida. Very challenging, his appointment as special counsel. They have got a whole list of motions. They want to push this well into 2025. So people still feel that. Thats a real Uphill Battle economically as she lays out these plans, isnt it, roger . Yeah. I mean, without a doubt. Having inflation come down doesnt mean things are getting cheaper, it just means they have stopped getting more expensive. But i would contrast her policies with what Donald Trump would do, which is bring back inflation. His tariffs, his mass deportations will drive up the cost of housing. The cost of food, the cost of everything we buy. Right . Its about a 4,000 hit. So, i contrast the great progress she and the Biden Administration made bringing inflation down with the inflationary policies that trump has said he will put in place if he is elected. Bret even though he gave them 1. 4 when he left office . You know, i think he also destroyed more jobs than any president. Right . We ended at The End of a pandemic. And a deflationary period. So i would say if you look at what trump did for the economy, he was clearly the worst president since the hoover administration. So, that 1. 4 came with also record unemployment. Your reaction to what he just said . You know, good evening, bret. I think you have to look at the facts. Trumps economic program is much stronger than what either Biden Or Harris haS Proposed. Under the trump presidency, inflation was very low. It averaged only 1. 9 per year. Under biden it averaged under 5 per year so far. So, thats why costs so much today, so much more than it did when trump left office. Furthermore clear to me americans were better off under trump and be better off when trump is elected president. Bret here is Vice President harris talking about corporate Tax Cuts and what that means for the debt, big picture. He plans to give billionaires massive Tax Cuts and to cut corporate taxes by over a trillion dollars. HiS Plans will add more than 5 Trillion to the national debt. And that is on top of the 2 Trillion Tax Cut he gave them when he waS President. Bret so, neither party is running away with great plans to deal with the debt or deficit. But, to her specific charges, how do you respond . Well, i think its jibber irish. What trump haS Proposed is to extend and make permanent the Tax Policy that waS Passed in 2017, which haS Proven so beneficial for the economy. The big deficits are under biden. Last year it was at least 2 Trillion deficit. Trump has a plan to reduce that by first reducing wasteful spending. He mentioned today wants to eliminate green new deal which is expected to cost about a trillion dollars he wants to not give benefits to illegal immigrants reduce spending. Raise revenue from higher growth and tariffs. These things will reduce the deficit and lead to lower inflation. Goldman sachs cease biggest boost from u. S. Economy from harris win. U. S. We should caution that harris now enjoy as clear lead over trump. Recent elections not just individual polls but Poll Averages turned out to be misleading. These gaps have not been random. Most of them under estimated the share of the vote that Donald Trump eventually received often by wide margins. What do you think of brookings write up and that sense of where we are and where we have been . Yeah, its interesting, bret. Talking to democrats, about how they feel post democratic national convention, post chicago, i think there still is a bit of cautiousness. They do not want to necessarily say that this is Kamala Harris race to lose. They point out often that at thiS Point in the race, and 2020, for example, and in past elections, Kamala Harris the democrats come before Kamala Harris were actually leading by a wider margin and Kamala Harris obviously came in to this race as someone who, you know, was not as well prepared aS Past candidates. She was Vice President , got thrown in. To the top of the tickets. What july before election day. So, there definitely is that nervousness. And you also hear you hear Kamala Harris herself being cautious about not sounding too confident yesterday in new hampshire. She talked about how she is the under dog in this race. And we see her campaign really pushing that messaging as an underdog. Someone who, you know, is trying to be scrappy. Not hiding, ben, their want to go after republicans. Who may be jumping off the trump train. Whether they are Nikki Haley republicans or republicans who are never trumpers. One of those former congresswoman Liz Cheney came out and said this. The danger that Donald Trump poses not only am i not voting for Donald Trump but i 8 be voting for Kamala Harris say im voting for Kamala Harris. Interestingly criticS Pointed to this 2020 tweet that she put out, Kamala Harris is a radical liberal who would raise taxes, take away guns and Health Insurance and explode the Size And Power of the federal government. She wants to recreate america in the image of what is happening on the streets of portland and seattle. We wont give her the chance. Its august 11th, 2020, obviously things changed in her perspective. Ben . Yes, Liz Cheney unburdened by what has been apparently. I think one of the things that we have to understand about this whole dynamic is that the republican party is actually far more united than be i think that it has been in previous years. And the people who out there x republicans or even current republicans, with the scant kind of argument against Donald Trump really have really been under served by the promotion of Kamala Harris. She is actually got a record that is even more unacceptable to winnable independent voters in the centered than Joe Biden was. And i think that Thats Something that has really been a defect for their argument. But i also think that there is something else going on here which is this is such a short circuited campaign, bret, its so bizarre, you know, Donald Trump cant go out into the crowds in the same degree that he likes to and the rallies that he likes to, because of the concerns about security and the assassination attempt, Kamala Harris essentially is giving the same speech over and over again at her rallies which, you know, are if you have seen one have you seen them all except perhaps with a different accent. I think that really is giving this weirdness of a rush to the finish that it where only the debate is going to matter when it comes time for them to take the stage together. Bret yeah. To that point, leslie, that debate, september 10th, and well see it here on fox, well simulcast it and have complete conch around it, the rules are set there was a lot of back and forth about them. Essentially the cnn rules. No live studio audience. Only pen, Paper And Water on stage. No prewritten notes. Theres a lot of back and forth about how much that debate means, how much it could mean. Where do you see it, leslie . I think its very important, bret. Honestly i just dont think debates are that important because the data shows us historically that the debates dont move the needle much. Especially when you have a race this close. You have a candidate that has been a candidate for blink of an eye, i know its been more than a month, and this may only be the debate. This may be it. Right . There has only been one debate. He may say im done after this. And there is just a lot to get. Bret she may. Yeah. Well, in addition to that, Joe Biden was criticized even by people in my party, you know, and especially for not, you know, really pushing back on Donald Trump when he would not tell the truth. When he would lie. And, you know, the Vice President has to do that. She has to be more, you know, specific, she has to distance herself from Joe Biden on the things that are perceived as bad but align herself with President Biden on the things that are good. You know, so i think its going to be, you know, difficult for both candidates. I think she has to be the adult in the room. And i think Donald Trump has to appear president ial, which has been a complaint i have heard from some republicans who jumped ship and were Nikki Haley republicans. Bret aS Promised we said we were going to bring at least a clip from both the Walz And Vance Campaign Speeches that have wrapped up. Take a listen. Common sense is what unites the republican ticket in 2024. This whole idea these folks who want to tell us the red state, blue state, big city vs. Small Town Drying to tell us that we are different. There are two different americans. We work as hard for them and their family and the things that are right for them quickly julia, both trying to reach across the aisle. Any sense where the vp tickets make a difference . Look traditionally normally only the top of the ticket. We have seen both of these candidates make news.
